Abstract
Recyclization of the ring-opening species of alkyl cyclopropyl ketones to cyclopentanones, which proceeds through an unfavored 5-endo-trig cyclization predicted by Baldwin's rules, is elusive. Herein, as assisted by a strong aryl donor and the Thorpe-Ingold strain on a quaternary cyclopropyl center, stereoconvergent direct ring expansion of cyclopropyl ketones to cyclopentanones promoted by TfOH or BF3·Et2O is described, providing a modular construction of polysubstituted cyclopentanones from aldehydes, alkyl methyl ketones, and α-keto esters within three steps.

Abstract
Theoretical studies predicted the planar cyclopenten-4-yl cation to be a classical carbocation, and the highest-energy isomer of C5 H7 + . Hence, its existence has not been verified experimentally so far. We were now able to isolate two stable derivatives of the cyclopenten-4-yl cation by reaction of bulky alanes CpR AlBr2 with AlBr3 . Elucidation of their (electronic) structures by X-ray diffraction and quantum chemistry studies revealed planar geometries and strong hyperconjugation interactions primarily from the C-Al σ bonds to the empty p orbital of the cationic sp2 carbon center. A close inspection of the molecular orbitals (MOs) and of the anisotropy of current (induced) density (ACID), as well as the evaluation of various aromaticity descriptors indicated distinct aromaticity for these cyclopenten-4-yl derivatives, which strongly contrasts the classical description of this system. Here, strong delocalization of π electrons spanning the whole carbocycle has been verified, thus providing rare examples of π aromaticity involving saturated sp3 carbon atoms.

Abstract
Rocaglates are a family of natural products isolated from the genus Aglaia which possess a highly substituted cyclopenta[b]benzofuran skeleton and inhibit cap-dependent protein synthesis. Rocaglates are attractive compounds due to their potential for inhibiting tumor cell maintenance in vivo by specifically targeting eukaryotic initiation factor 4A (eIF4A) and interfering with recruitment of ribosomes to mRNA. In this paper, we describe an intercepted retro-Nazarov reaction utilizing intramolecular tosyl migration to generate a reactive oxyallyl cation on the rocaglate skeleton. Trapping of the oxyallyl cation with a diverse range of nucleophiles has been used to generate over 50 novel amidino-rocaglate (ADR) and amino-rocaglate derivatives. Subsequently, these derivatives were evaluated for their ability to inhibit cap-dependent protein synthesis where they were found to outperform previous lead compounds including the rocaglate hydroxamate CR-1-31-B.

Abstract
Readily accessible 3-aryl-2-carboxypropenones (by Knoevenagel condensation) undergo acid promoted cyclodehydration with nucleophile incorporation to form highly substituted indenes. For stronger nucleophiles, nucleophile incorporation precedes cyclodehydration in a nucleophilic-addition-cyclodehydration (NAC) sequence. For weaker nucleophiles, cyclodehydration precedes nucleophile incorporation in a cyclodehydrative-nucleophilic-trapping (CNT) sequence, involving a reactive allyl cation intermediate. The substrate scope and preferred cyclization pathway (NAC or CNT) has been studied with respect to 3-aryl-2-carboxypropenone and the nature of the nucleophile. Also, for 1,3-diaryl-2-carboxypropenones, which can also undergo Nazarov cyclization, delineation between competing Nazarov and CNT pathways is controlled by the nature of the acid catalyst.

Abstract
Carbometalation of oxazolidinone (Ox)-substituted ynamides is used to generate highly substituted Ox-divinyl (and aryl vinyl) ketones for use in Nazarov cyclizations. The Ox-group serves as a remarkably effective chiral activating group, enabling the torquoselective Nazarov cyclization of these sterically congested substrates to be performed under mild conditions. It also serves as a charge-stabilizing group in the intermediate oxyallyl cation, suppressing undesired [1,2]-sigmatropic shifts of neighboring substituents and facilitating the regio- and stereoselective incorporation of nucleophiles to yield cyclopentanoids containing up to three contiguous all-carbon quaternary (4°) stereocentres.

Abstract
Organoaluminum-mediated double interrupted Nazarov cyclization to access bicyclo[3.1.0]hexanols via nucleophilic methyl attack followed by Simmons-Smith-type electrophilic cyclopropanation is reported. These alcohols can undergo ring opening to afford cyclohexanones or cyclohexenones, broadening the range of scaffolds available via interrupted Nazarov reaction beyond the usual cyclopentanoid products. Throughout the sequence, a total of four new C-C bonds are formed, along with four new stereogenic centers.

Abstract
Achieving ready-enantioselective access to multistereocenter-containing cyclopentyl rings is an area of great significance to organic synthesis. In this work, we describe a general protocol for accessing multistereocenter-containing cyclopentanoids from simple N-alkynyloxazolidinones (Ox-ynamides). This protocol involves conversion of Ox-ynamides into Ox-activated divinyl and aryl vinyl ketones that undergo facile Nazarov cyclization with excellent chemo-, regio-, and stereocontrol. The Ox auxiliary directs all aspects of reactivity and selectivity, both in the electrocyclization and in the subsequent transformations of the resulting oxyallyl intermediate. Stereoinduction in the electrocyclization results from a "coupled-torque" mechanism in which rotation of the Ox group, driven by increasing orbital overlap of the nitrogen lone pair with the incipient oxyallyl cation, is coupled with the rotation of the termini of the pentadienyl cation, favoring a particular direction of conrotatory ring closure (torquoselectivity). The associated lone-pair stabilization of the transition state by Ox promotes cyclization of traditionally resistant substrates, broadening the scope of this asymmetric Nazarov cyclization. The Ox group also facilitates the stereo- and regioselective incorporation of nucleophiles (Nu) and dienes, giving more complex, multistereocenter containing cyclopentanoids. Finally, the Ox group is readily removed and recovered or can be converted into other amine functionalities.

Abstract
The generation of dibrominated cyclopentenones via an interrupted Nazarov cyclization is reported. The installation of two bromine atoms occurs at the α and α' positions of the cyclopentenyl scaffold via successive nucleophilic and electrophilic bromination of the 2-oxidocyclopentenyl cation and its resulting enolate. Notably, the reaction proceeds with good diastereoselectivity, favoring the symmetrical product.

Abstract
We describe a novel reactivity of benzylic-stabilized oxyallyl cations towards regioselective construction of carbon quaternary centers. These synthetically useful intermediates were readily generated upon ionization of aryl substituted α-hydroxy methylenol ethers with catalytic, mild Brønsted acid. The emerging unsymmetrical oxyallyl cations were then directly captured by indoles and other nucleophiles with exquisite control of regioselectivity, predictably at the electrophilic carbon bearing the alkyl substituent to produce highly functionalized, value-added enol ethers.

Abstract
The first intermolecular interrupted imino-Nazarov reaction with silylated pyrimidine derivatives as nucleophile has been developed, furnishing carbocyclic nucleoside analogues in a one-pot operation.
The analogous imino-variant of the Nazarov reaction suffers from unfavorable energetics associated with the ring closure process, thereby limiting the utility of this class of reactions. In this report, the realization of the first intermolecular interrupted imino-Nazarov reaction utilizing silylated pyrimidine derivatives as nucleophilic trapping partners culminated in an expedient synthetic route to carbocyclic nucleoside analogues. The potential application of silylated nucleobases to intercept the oxyallyl cation in other variants of the Nazarov reaction provides vast opportunities to develop new strategies for the formation of carbocyclic nucleoside analogues.

Abstract
Easily accessible cyclooctadienyl vinyl ketones can generate fused bicyclic 8-5 (bicyclo[6.3.0]undecadienone) ring systems via the Nazarov cyclization when treated with Lewis acid. The resultant products contain three new stereocenters as well as olefins suitably situated to allow further structural elaboration. This concise sequence allows for the rapid preparation of intermediates that should be applicable to a variety of natural product targets containing this bicyclic core.
