Platinum-based phosphorescent double-decker tweezers: a strategy for extended heterologous metal-metal interactions

Heavy-Metal Ions Removal and Iodine Capture by Terpyridine Covalent Organic Frameworks

Porous materials are excellent candidates for water remediation in environmental issues. However, it is still a key challenge to design efficient adsorbents for rapid water purification from various heavy metal ions-contaminated wastewater in one step. Here, two robust nitrogen-rich covalent organic frameworks (COFs) bearing terpyridine units on the pore walls by a "bottom-up" strategy are reported. Benefitting from the strong chelation interaction between the terpyridine units and various heavy metal ions, these two terpyridine COFs show excellent removal efficiency and capability for Pb2+, Hg2+, Cu2+, Ag+, Cd2+, Ni2+, and Cr3+ from water. These COFs are shown to remove such heavy metal ions with >90% of contents at one time after the aqueous metal ions mixture is passed through the COF filter. The nitrogen-rich features of the COFs also endow them with the capability of capturing iodine vapors, offering the terpyridine COFs the potential for environmental remediation applications.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Resistive Memory Behaviors of Highly Strained Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Nanohoops

Strained carbon nanohoops exhibit attractive photophysical properties due to their unique π-conjugated structure. However, incorporation of such nanohoops into the pincer ligand of metal complexes has rarely been explored. Herein, a new family of highly strained cyclometalated platinum(II) nanohoops has been synthesized and characterized. Strain-promoted C-H bond activation has been observed during the metal coordination process, and Hückel-Möbius topology and random-columnar packing in the solid state are found. Transient absorption spectroscopy revealed the size-dependent excited state properties of the nanohoops. Moreover, the nanohoops have been successfully employed as active materials in the fabrication of solution-processable resistive memory devices, including the use of the smallest platinum(II) nanohoop for the fabrication of a binary memory, with low switching threshold voltages of ca. 1.5 V, high ON/OFF current ratios, and good stability. These results demonstrate that strain incorporation into the structure can be an effective strategy to fundamentally fine-tune the reactivity, optoelectronic, and resistive memory properties.

Luminescent Platinum(II) Complexes with Terdentate N∧C∧C Ligands

The synthesis, structure, and luminescence of Pt(II) complexes of the type [Pt(N∧C∧C)(L)] are reported, where N∧C∧C is a terdentate ligand resulting from the cycloplatination of 2-(3,5-diphenoxyphenyl)pyridine or 2-(4,4″-dimethyl-[1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-5'-yl)pyridine, and L represents a monodentate ancillary ligand, which can be γ-picoline, 4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, PPh3, n-butyl or 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide, CO, or the N-heterocyclic carbenes 1-butyl-3-methylimidazol-2-ylidene or 4-butyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene. Derivatives bearing CO, isocyanides, or carbenes showed the highest stabilities in solution, whereas the pyridine and PPh3 derivatives establish ligand-exchange equilibria in acetonitrile. Different supramolecular structures are observed in the solid state, which largely depend on the nature of the ancillary ligand. Isocyanides and CO favor π interactions between the aromatic rings, metallophilic Pt···Pt contacts, or a combination of both. In contrast, pyridine ligands may lead to bimolecular assemblies driven by C-H···O, C-H···Pt, or C-H/π hydrogen bonds. Luminescence was examined in fluid solution, poly(methyl methacrylate) matrices, and the solid state at 298 K, and in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran glasses at 77 K. The majority of derivatives show highly efficient emissions from 3ILCT/MLCT or 3ILCT/MLCT/LLCT excited states of monomeric species. The formation of excimers and different types of emissive aggregates are demonstrated, which lead to red-shifted emissions of different origins and characteristics depending on the involved noncovalent interactions.

Assembling Molecular Clips To Build π-Stacks

Nature utilizes an intimate stacking of aromatic motifs to construct functional structures, as demonstrated in protein folding and polynucleotide assembly. However, organized π-stacks of artificial molecules are difficult to build, primarily due to the weak, non-directional, and context-sensitive nature of van der Waals forces. To overcome these challenges, chemists have invented ingenious architectural designs to construct π-stacked supramolecular assemblies using clip-like molecules. This Concept article focuses on molecular clips that enable precise spatial control over assembly patterns, beyond the scope of simple host-guest chemistry. Different design strategies are analyzed and compared that leverage non-covalent interactions to create multi-layer π-stacks. Particular emphasis is placed on the choice of spine units as they play a crucial role in controlling the (i) spacing, (ii) orientation, and (iii) conformational pre-organization of linked aromatics to achieve long-range spatial ordering.

π-Electronic ion pairs: building blocks for supramolecular nanoarchitectonics viaiπ-iπ interactions

The pairing of charged π-electronic systems and their ordered arrangement have been achieved by iπ-iπ interactions that are derived from synergetically worked electrostatic and dispersion forces. Charged π-electronic systems that provide ion pairs as building blocks for assemblies have been prepared by diverse strategies for introducing charge in the core π-electronic systems. One method to prepare charged π-electronic systems is the use of covalent bonding that makes π-electronic ions and valence-mismatched metal complexes as well as protonated and deprotonated states. Noncovalent ion complexation is another method used to create π-electronic ions, particularly for anion binding, producing negatively charged π-electronic systems. Charged π-electronic systems afford various ion pairs, consisting of both cationic and anionic π-systems, depending on their combinations. Geometries and electronic states of the constituents in π-electronic ion pairs affect the photophysical properties and assembling modes. Recent progress in π-electronic ion pairs has revealed intriguing characteristics, including the transformation into radical pairs through electron transfer and the magnetic properties influenced by the countercations. Furthermore, the assembly states exhibit diversity as observed in crystals and soft materials including liquid-crystal mesophases. While the chemistry of ion pairs (salts) is well-established, the field of π-electronic ion pairs is relatively new; however, it holds great promise for future applications in novel materials and devices.

"Lock and Key" and "Induced-Fit" Host-Guest Models in Two Digold(I)-Based Metallotweezers

Two different metallotweezers, each with two pyrene-imidazolylidene-gold(I) arms, were used as hosts for a series of planar aromatic guests. The metallotweezer with a dibenzoacridinebis(alkynyl) spacer (1) orients the two pyrene-imidazolylidene-gold(I) arms in a parallel disposition, with an interpanel distance of about 7 Å. The second metallotweezer (2) contains a carbazolylbis(alkynyl) spacer that directs the two pyrene panels in a diverging orientation. Determination of the association constants via ¹H NMR titrations demonstrates that the binding strength shown by 1 is significantly larger than that found by 2, with binding affinities as large as 10⁴ M^-1 (in CDCl₃), for the encapsulation of N,N'-dimethylnaphthalenetetracarboxydiimide with 1. The differences in the binding affinities are due to binding models associated with formation of the related host-guest complexes. While 1 operates via a "lock and key" model, in which the host does not suffer distortions upon formation of the inclusion complex, 2 operates via a guest-induced fit model. The large association constants shown by 1 with two planar guests were used for promotion of the template-directed synthesis of 1, which in the absence of an external template is produced in an equimolecular mixture with its self-aggregated congener, clippane [1₂]. This observation strongly suggests that the mechanically interlocked clippane is formed through a self-template-directed mechanism, while bonds are broken/formed during the synthetic protocol.

The New Di-Gold Metallotweezer Based on an Alkynylpyridine System

We developed a simple method to prepare one gold-based metallotweezer with two planar Au-pyrene-NHC arms bound by a 2,6-bis(3-ethynyl-5-tert-butylphenyl)pyridine unit. This metallotweezer is able to bind a series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons through the π-stacking interactions between the polyaromatic guests and the pyrene moieties of the NHC ligands. The metallotweezer was also used as a host for the encapsulation of planar metal complexes, such as the Au(III) complex [Au(C^N^C)(C≡CC₆H₄-OCH₃-p)], for which there is a large binding constant of 946 M⁻¹.

Phosphorescent Host-Guest Complexes on the Basis of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane-Functionalized Metallotweezers

Phosphorescent host-guest systems have attracted considerable attention because of their intriguing properties and diverse applications. In this study, a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-functionalized gold(III) tweezer receptor has been designed and synthesized. It is capable of sandwiching platinum(II) terpyridine compounds into its cavity with a high noncovalent binding affinity (association constants: ∼10⁵ M^-1 in chloroform). The resulting heterometallic host-guest complexes exhibit enhanced phosphorescent emission compared with those of the individual species in chloroform, thanks to the prevention of vibration and rotation upon noncovalent complexation. They can further assemble into nanospheres in chloroform/diethyl ether (1:9, v/v) owing to phase segregation between the metallotweezer/guest motif and the peripheral polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane unit. When terpyridine platinum(II) chloride serves as the complementary guest, the resulting noncovalent system displays an intraligand emission at the individual host-guest complexed state yet excimeric emission at the supramolecular assembled state, yielding the phosphorescent solvatochromic behaviors. Overall, the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-functionalized metallotweezer combines guest encapsulation and supramolecular assembly capabilities, which provides new avenues for color-tunable phosphorescent materials.

Molecular Alignment of Alkynylplatinum(II) 2,6-Bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine Double Complex Salts and the Formation of Well-Ordered Nanostructures Directed by Pt···Pt and Donor-Acceptor Interactions

A new class of alkynylplatinum(II) bzimpy (bzimpy = bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine) double complex salts (DCSs) containing dialkoxynaphthalene or pyromellitic diimide moieties on the alkynyl ligand has been reported to display distinct morphological properties compared to their precursor alkynylplatinum(II) complexes, with the capability of being aligned by the directional Pt···Pt and/or π-π stacking interactions. The incorporation of donor and acceptor units on the alkynyl ligands has been found to significantly perturb the alignment of the oppositely charged complex ions in the DCSs to stack in a twisted head-to-head manner, attributed to the additional driving forces of electrostatic and donor-acceptor interactions. The modulation of the Pt···Pt distances and the extent of aggregate formation have been demonstrated by altering the charge matching between the platinum(II) bzimpy moieties and the donor or acceptor moieties on the alkynyl ligand.

Clippane: A Mechanically Interlocked Molecule (MIM) Based on Molecular Tweezers

In this study we report the preparation of a new mechanically interlocked molecule formed by the self-aggregation of two metallotweezers composed by two pyrene-imidazolylidene gold(I) arms and a pyridine-centered pentacyclic bis-alkynyl linker. The mechanically interlocked nature of this molecule arises from the presence of the bulky tert-butyl groups attached to the sides of the pyrene moieties of the arms of the tweezer, which act as stoppers avoiding the dissociation of the self-aggregated metallotweezer dimer once it is formed. By combining experimental techniques, we were able to confirm the mechanically interlocked nature of this molecule in solution, in the gas phase and in the solid state. The behavior of the tert-butyl substituted tweezer differs greatly form that shown by the tweezer lacking of these bulky groups, whose dimeric structure is in equilibrium with the monomeric structure, therefore not showing any mechanical coercion that avoids the disassembly of the self-aggregated structure.

Shape-Adaptability and Redox-Switching Properties of a Di-Gold Metallotweezer

The use of a carbazolyl-connected di-gold(I) metallotweezer for the encapsulation of several electron-poor organic substrates, and a planar Au(III) complex containing a CNC pincer ligand, is described. The binding affinity of the receptor depends on the electron-deficient character of the planar guest, with larger association constants found for the more electron-poor guests. The X-ray diffraction molecular structures of two host:guest adducts show that the host approaches its arms in order to facilitate the optimum interaction with the surface of the planar guests, in a clear example of an guest-induced fit conformational arrangement. The electrochemical studies of the encapsulation of N,N'-dimethyl-naphthalenetetracarboxy diimide (NTCDI) show that the redox active guest is released from the receptor upon one electron reduction, thus constituting an example of redox-switchable binding.

Adaptive molecular quaternary clips made with pyrene functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane

Evolving synthetic molecules toward complex structures is a major goal in supramolecular chemistry. Increasing the number of clips in a unimolecular multi-clip (UMC), although vital to elevate the complexity of supramolecular architectures, often prevents the UMC from forming host-guest complexes in the bulk phase. To overcome this difficulty, adaptive chemistry was applied to develop a novel adaptive unimolecular quaternary clip (Q-clip). The Q-clip is intrinsically amorphous, but self-organizes with exclusively 4 eq. of allosteric activators (NDI) to form the Q-clip : NDI₄ complexes and a supramolecular lamellar structure in the bulk. The adaptive assembly is fast and allows us to locate the adaptive assembly area of Q-clip : NDI₄ complexes in the amorphous Q-clip film. Our results provide new insights into the design of adaptive UMCs for the evolution toward complex structures and supramolecular functional materials.

Organoplatinum(II)-Based Self-Complementary Molecular Tweezers with Guest-Induced Fluorochromic Behaviors

Cyclometalated organoplatinum(II) complexes have aroused tremendous interests due to their square-planar geometry and intriguing photophysics. To access multiplatinum systems with more than three cyclometalated organoplatinum(II) units, the traditional covalent synthetic approach suffers from tedious multistep reactions with low overall yield. In comparison, supramolecular assembly can be regarded as an effective strategy toward multiplatinum(II) architectures. Despite the progresses achieved, it is still challenging to fabricate well-ordered supramolecular assemblies with precise numbers of organoplatinum(II) units. Herein, self-complementary dimerized molecular tweezers with four cyclometalated platinum(II) units have been successfully constructed by taking advantage of dual roles of the incorporated 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine unit (serving as the rigid spacer and encapsulated guest). Furthermore, addition of electron-rich carbazoles leads to conversion of the self-complementary structure to molecular tweezer/guest complexes. Such a structural transformation gives rise to the concomitant luminescent color change. The unique guest-induced fluorochromic phenomena, which are seldom reported in the previous host-guest systems, would be promising as tunable luminescent and ratiometric sensing materials.

N-Heterocyclic Carbenes: A Door Open to Supramolecular Organometallic Chemistry

The field of metallosupramolecular chemistry is clearly dominated by the use of O-, N-, and P-donor Werner-type polydentate ligands. These molecular architectures are of high interest because of their wide range of applications, which include molecular encapsulation, stabilization of reactive species, supramolecular catalysis, and drug delivery, among others. Only recently, organometallic ligands have allowed the preparation of a variety of supramolecular coordination complexes, and the term supramolecular organometallic complexes (SOCs) is gaining space within the field of metallosupramolecular chemistry. While the early examples of SOCs referred to supramolecular architectures mostly containing bisalkenyl, diphenyl, or bisalkynyl linkers, the development of SOCs during the past decade has been boosted by the parallel development of multidentate N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands. The first examples of NHC-based SOCs referred to supramolecular assemblies based on polydentate NHC ligands bound to group 11 metals. However, during the last 10 years, several planar poly-NHC ligands containing extended π-conjugated systems have facilitated the formation of a large variety of architectures in which the supramolecular assemblies can contain metals other than Cu, Ag, and Au. Such ligands are Janus di-NHCs and trigonal-planar tris-NHCs-most of them prepared by our research group-which have allowed the preparation of a vast range of NHC-based metallosupramolecular compounds with interesting host-guest chemistry properties. Although the number of SOCs has increased in the past few years, their use for host-guest chemistry purposes is still in its earliest infancy. In this Account, we describe the achievements that we have made during the last 4 years toward broadening the applications of planar extended π-conjugated NHC ligands for the preparation of organometallic-based supramolecular structures, including their use as hosts for some selected organic and inorganic guests, together with the catalytic properties displayed by some selected host-guest inclusion complexes. Our contribution describes the design of several Ni-, Pd-, and Au-based metallorectangles and metalloprisms, which we used for the encapsulation of several organic substrates, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and fullerenes. The large binding affinities found are ascribed to the incorporation of two cofacial panels with large π-conjugated systems, which provide the optimum conditions for guest recognition by π-π-stacking interactions. We also describe a series of digold(I) metallotweezers for the recognition of organic and inorganic substrates. These metallotweezers were used for the recognition of "naked" metal cations and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The recognition properties of these metallotweezers are highly dependent on the nature of the rigid connector and of the ancillary ligands that constitute the arms of the tweezer. A peculiar balance between the self-aggregation properties of the tweezer and its ability to encapsulate organic guests is observed.

Platinum(ii) non-covalent crosslinkers for supramolecular DNA hydrogels

Manipulation of non-covalent metal–metal interactions allows the fabrication of functional metallosupramolecular structures with diverse supramolecular behaviors. The majority of reported studies are mostly designed and governed by thermodynamics, with very few examples of metallosupramolecular systems exhibiting intriguing kinetics. Here we report a serendipitous finding of platinum(ii) complexes serving as non-covalent crosslinkers for the fabrication of supramolecular DNA hydrogels. Upon mixing the alkynylplatinum(ii) terpyridine complex with double-stranded DNA in aqueous solution, the platinum(ii) complex molecules are found to first stack into columnar phases by metal–metal and π–π interactions, and then the columnar phases that carry multiple positive charges crosslink the negatively charged DNA strands to form supramolecular hydrogels with luminescence properties and excellent processability. Subsequent platinum(ii) intercalation into DNA competes with the metal–metal and π–π interactions at the crosslinking points, switching on the spontaneous gel-to-sol transition. In the case of a chloro (2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2′-yl)pyridine)platinum(ii) complex, with [Pt(bzimpy)Cl]⁺ serving as a non-covalent crosslinker where the metal–metal and π–π interactions outcompete platinum(ii) intercalation, the intercalation-driven gel-to-sol transition pathway is blocked since the gel state is energetically more favorable than the sol state. Interestingly, the ligand exchange reaction of the chloro ligand in [Pt(bzimpy)Cl]⁺ with glutathione (GSH) has endowed the complexes with enhanced hydrophilicity, decreasing the planarity of the complexes, and turning off the metal–metal and π–π interactions at the crosslinking points, leading to GSH-triggered hydrogel dissociation.

We report a serendipitous finding of platinum(ii) complexes serving as non-covalent crosslinkers for the fabrication of supramolecular DNA hydrogels.

Platinum(II) Probes for Sensing Polyelectrolyte Lengths and Architectures

Platinum(II) polypyridine complexes of a square-planar geometry have been used as spectroscopic reporters for quantification of various charged species through non-covalent metal-metal interactions. The characterization of molecular weights and architectures of polyelectrolytes represents a challenging task in polymer science. Here, we report the utilization of platinum(II) complex probes and non-covalent metal-metal interactions for sensing polyelectrolyte lengths and architectures. It is found that the platinum(II) probes can bind to linear polyelectrolytes via electrostatic attractions and give rise to significant spectroscopic changes associated with the formation of metal-metal interactions, and the extent of the spectroscopic changes is found to increase with the lengths of the linear polyelectrolytes. Besides, the platinum(II) probes have been found to co-assemble with the linear polyelectrolytes to form well-defined nanofibers, and the lengths of the linear polyelectrolytes can be directly estimated from the diameter of the nanofibers under transmission electron microscopy observation. Interestingly, upon mixing with the platinum(II) probes, polyelectrolytes with bottlebrush architectures have been found to exhibit larger spectroscopic changes than linear polyelectrolytes with the same chemical composition. Combined with the reported theoretical studies on counterion condensation of polyelectrolytes, the platinum(II) complexes are found to function as spectroscopic probes for sensing the charge densities of the polyelectrolytes with different lengths and diverse architectures. Moreover, platinum(II) probes pre-organized in nanostructured aggregates have been found to intercalate into double-stranded DNA, which are naturally occurring biological polyelectrolytes with helical architectures and intercalation sites, to give significant enhancement of spectroscopic changes when compared to the intercalation of monomeric platinum(II) probes into double-stranded DNA.

Precise Modulation of Molecular Building Blocks from Tweezers to Rectangles for Recognition and Stimuli-Responsive Processes

Alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes have been increasingly explored since the previous decades, mainly arising from their intriguing photophysical properties and aggregation affinities associated with their extensive Pt(II)···Pt(II) and π-π stacking interactions. Through molecular engineering, one can modulate their fundamental properties and assembly behavior by introduction of various functional groups and structural features. They can therefore serve as ideal candidates to construct metal complex-based molecular architectures to provide an alternative to organic compounds. The metal-based framework can be simultaneously built from predetermined building blocks, giving rise to their well-defined, unique, and discrete natures for molecular recognition. The individual constituents can contribute to molecular architectures with their integrated properties, allowing the manipulation of the various noncovalent intermolecular forces and interactions for selective guest capture. In this Account, our recent progress in the development of these metallomolecular frameworks based on the alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine system and their recognition properties toward different guest molecules will be presented. Phosphorescent molecular tweezers have been constructed from the alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine moiety to demonstrate host-guest interactions with cationic, charge-neutral and anionic platinum(II), palladium(II), gold(I), and gold(III) complexes and their binding affinities were found to be perturbed by different metal···metal, π-π and electrostatic interactions. The host-guest assembly process has also resulted in dramatic color changes, together with the turning on of near-IR (NIR) emissions as a result of extensive Pt(II)···Pt(II) interactions. Further work has also been performed to demonstrate that the tweezers can selectively recognize π-surfaces of different planar π-conjugated organic guests. The framework of molecular tweezers has been extended to a double-decker tweezers structure, or a triple-decker structure, which can bind two equivalents of square-planar platinum(II) guests cooperatively to induce a significant color change in solution, representing rare examples of discrete Magnus' green-like salts. By the approaches of structural modifications, we have further modulated the host architecture from molecular tweezers to molecular rectangles. The rectangles have been found to show selective encapsulation of different transition metal complex guests based on the size and steric environment of the host cavity. The molecular rectangles also exhibit reversible host-guest association, in which guest capture and ejection processes can be manipulated by the pH environment, illustrating a potential approach for precise and smart delivery of therapeutic reagents to the slightly more acidic cancer cells.

Multicomponent Assembled Systems Based on Platinum(II) Terpyridine Complexes

Platinum(II) terpyridine complexes have received tremendous attention in recent years because of their square-planar geometry and fascinating photophysics. Bottom-up self-assembly represents an intriguing approach to construct well-ordered supramolecular architectures with tunable optical and electronic properties. Until now, much effort has been devoted to the fabrication of monocomponent platinum(II) terpyridine-based assemblies. The next step is to develop multicomponent coassembled systems via the combination of platinum(II) terpyridine complexes with other π-organic and -organometallic molecules. The implementation of electron/energy transfer processes renders advanced functionality to the resulting coassemblies. For the fabrication of discrete multicomponent architectures, a feasible protocol is to construct preorganized molecular tweezers and macrocycles with the involvement of platinum(II) terpyridine complexes as the panel units. In view of their planar surface and positively charged character, such supramolecular receptors are capable of encapsulating electron-rich polyaromatic hydrocarbons and organometallic guests via donor-acceptor charge-transfer and/or metal-metal interactions. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds can be further incorporated between the molecular tweezers receptor and the polyaromatic hydrocarbon guests, giving rise to the strengthened binding affinity and sensitive stimuli-responsiveness. On this basis, multilayer donor-acceptor stacks have been obtained via the precise control over the number of pincers, which feature enhanced complexation strength and superior functionality. Moreover, platinum(II) terpyridine-based macrocycles are more suitable for guest accommodation than the corresponding molecular tweezers receptors in light of their definite size and constrained environment. Stimuli-responsive elements can be conveniently implemented into the rigid spacers of the molecular tweezers and macrocyclic receptors, facilitating the capture and release of the sandwiched guests in a highly controlled manner. On the other hand, long-range-ordered supramolecular polymers have been successfully fabricated with linear, hyperbranched, and cross-linked topologies by employing platinum(II) terpyridine-based molecular tweezers/guest recognition motifs as the non-covalent connecting unit. The degree of polymerization of the resulting donor-acceptor-type supramolecular polymers can be efficiently modulated by incorporating intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the molecular tweezers receptor and the complementary guest unit. An alternative approach toward extended multicomponent donor-acceptor assemblies is to mimic the structure of Magnus' green salt. A delicate balance of non-covalent driving forces between homo- and heterocomplexation processes and a deeper understanding of thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors play the decisive roles in the final arrangement of the coassembled structures. Overall, multicomponent coassembly of platinum(II) terpyridine complexes into well-ordered nanostructures would open up a new avenue toward functional supramolecular materials that are especially promising for sensing, optoelectronics, and catalytic applications.

Amphiphilic Carbazole-Containing Compounds with Lower Critical Solution Temperature Behavior for Supramolecular Self-Assembly and Solution-Processable Resistive Memories

The self-organization and resistive memory performances of a series of newly synthesized water-soluble amphiphilic carbazole derivatives have been explored. Temperature-dependent UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy has been conducted to study the isodesmic self-assembly mechanism of the carbazole-containing compounds. This class of compounds also exhibits interesting lower critical solution temperature properties, which are sensitive to concentration and ionic additives. One of the compounds has been solution-processed and utilized as an active material in the engineering of resistive memory devices, exhibiting a switching voltage of about 3.9 V, a constant ON/OFF current ratio of 10⁶ , and a long retention time of 10⁴  s. The present work demonstrates the versatile potential applications of water-soluble amphiphilic carbazole-containing compounds in supramolecular chemistry and resistive memory devices.

Supramolecular alternate donor-acceptor copolymers mediated by PtPt metal-metal interactions and their photocatalytic applications

Precise arrangement of the aromatic donor-acceptor units is of paramount importance to dictate the performance of multi-component π-functional materials. Herein a novel strategy has been developed toward alternate donor-acceptor copolymers, by incorporating Pt(ii)Pt(ii) metal-metal interactions for the hetero-complexation process. The proximity of Pt atoms endows the resulting supramolecular copolymers with metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transitions in the visible/NIR region. The signals have been further applied for low-energy visible-light photo-catalysis that is unattainable for the individual species. More interestingly, "on-demand" photo-catalytic efficiency can be achieved by manipulating the reversibility of the supramolecular copolymerization process. Hence, the current work demonstrates the efficiency of fabricating multi-component π-functional materials via the elaborate manipulation of non-covalent driving forces.

Energy Landscape in Supramolecular Coassembly of Platinum(II) Complexes and Polymers: Morphological Diversity, Transformation, and Dilution Stability of Nanostructures

Establishment of energy landscape has emerged as an efficient pathway for improved understanding and manipulation of both thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors of complicated supramolecular systems. Herein, we report the establishment of energy landscapes of supramolecular coassembly of platinum(II) complexes and polymers, as well as the fabrication of nanostructures with enhanced complexity and intriguing properties from the coassembly systems. In the energy landscape, coassembly at room temperature has been found to only allow the longitudinal growth of platinum(II) complexes and block copolymers into core-shell nanofibers that are the kinetically trapped products. Thermal annealing can switch on the transverse growth of platinum(II) complexes and block copolymers to produce core-shell nanobelts that are the thermodynamically stable nanostructures. The extents of the transverse growth are found to increase with thermal annealing temperatures, leading to nanobelts with larger widths. Besides, rapid quenching of a hot coassembly mixture to room temperature can capture intermediate nanobelt- block-nanofiber nanostructures that are metastable and capable of converting to nanobelts upon further incubation at room temperature. Moreover, sonication treatment has been found to couple with the energy landscape of the coassembly system and open a unique energy-driven pathway to activate the kinetically forbidden nanofiber-to-nanobelt morphological transformation. Furthermore, based on the established energy landscapes, nanosphere- block-nanobelt nanostructures with distinct segmented architectures have been fabricated by thermal annealing of the ternary mixture of platinum(II) complexes, block copolymers, and polymer brushes in a one-pot and single-step procedure. Finally, the nanobelts and nanosphere- block-nanobelt nanostructures are found to possess intriguing morphological stability against acid and dilution, exhibiting characteristics that are important for promising biomedical applications.

Synthesis and Guest Recognition of Switchable Pt-Salphen Based Molecular Tweezers

Molecular tweezers are artificial receptors that have an open cavity generated by two recognition units pre-organized by a spacer. Switchable molecular tweezers, using a stimuli-responsive spacer, are particularly appealing as prototypes of the molecular machines that combine mechanical motion and allosteric recognition properties. In this present study, the synthesis of switchable molecular tweezers composed of a central terpyridine unit substituted in 4,4″ positions by two Pt(II)-salphen complexes is reported. The terpyridine ligand can be reversibly converted upon Zn(II) coordination from a free ‘U’-shaped closed form to a coordinated ‘W’ open form. This new substitution pattern enables a reverse control of the mechanical motion compared to the previously reported 6,6″ substituted terpyridine-based tweezers. Guest binding studies with aromatic guests showed an intercalation of coronene in the cavity created by the Pt-salphen moieties in the closed conformation. The formation of 1:1 host-guest complex was investigated by a combination of NMR studies and DFT calculations.

Multi-modulation for self-assemblies of amphiphilic rigid-soft compounds through alteration of solution polarity and temperature

A new class of small molecule-based amphiphilic carbazole-containing compounds has been designed and synthesized. Detailed analysis of the temperature- and solvent-dependent UV-vis absorption spectra has provided insights into the cooperative self-assembly mechanism of the carbazole-containing compounds. Interestingly, the prepared amphiphilic rigid-soft compounds were also found to display a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior in aqueous solution, which is relatively less explored in small molecule-based materials, leading to promising candidates for the design of a new class of thermo-responsive materials.

Living supramolecular polymerization achieved by collaborative assembly of platinum(II) complexes and block copolymers

An important feature of biological systems to achieve complexity and precision is the involvement of multiple components where each component plays its own role and collaborates with other components. Mimicking this, we report living supramolecular polymerization achieved by collaborative assembly of two structurally dissimilar components, that is, platinum(II) complexes and poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PEG-b-PAA). The PAA blocks neutralize the charges of the platinum(II) complexes, with the noncovalent metal-metal and π-π interactions directing the longitudinal growth of the platinum(II) complexes into 1D crystalline nanostructures, and the PEG blocks inhibiting the transverse growth of the platinum(II) complexes and providing the whole system with excellent solubility. The ends of the 1D crystalline nanostructures have been found to be active during the assembly and remain active after the assembly. One-dimensional segmented nanostructures with heterojunctions have been produced by sequential growth of two types of platinum(II) complexes. The PAA blocks act as adapters at the heterojunctions for lattice matching between chemically and crystallographically different platinum(II) complexes, achieving heterojunctions with a lattice mismatch as large as 21%.

Supramolecular assembly of a phosphole-based moiety into nanostructures dictated by alkynylplatinum(ii) terpyridine complexes through non-covalent Pt···Pt and π-π stacking interactions: synthesis, characterization, photophysics and self-assembly behaviors

A new class of platinum(ii) terpyridine complexes with a phosphole-derived bridging alkynyl ligand have been prepared. The X-ray crystal structure of complex 2 has been determined, and reveals a polymeric zig-zag chain structure with the existence of π-π stacking interactions. The photophysical properties have also been studied, with 3MLCT/3LLCT phosphorescence exhibited in degassed CH2Cl2; the energy of which is varied by the π-conjugation of the terpyridine ligands. The solvent-induced assembly of complex 1 has been studied. The incorporation of hydrophobic hydrocarbon chains has been shown to play an important role in assisting the formation of self-assembled nanostructures via Pt···Pt, π-π stacking and hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions. It has been established that an isodesmic growth mechanism operates in polar media to give nanospheres, while fibrous networks originate from the self-assembly of the complexes in non-polar media, predominantly driven by π-π stacking interactions.
