Abstract
Asymmetric gold catalysis has been rapidly developed in the past ten years. Breakthroughs have been made by rational design and meticulous selection of chiral ligands. This review summarizes newly developed gold-catalyzed enantioselective organic transformations and recent progress in ligand design (since 2016), organized according to different types of chiral ligands, including bisphosphine ligands, monophosphine ligands, phosphite-derived ligands, and N-heterocyclic carbene ligands for asymmetric gold(I) catalysis as well as heterocyclic carbene ligands and oxazoline ligands for asymmetric gold(III) catalysis.

Abstract
Four carbon ring systems are frequently present in natural products with remarkable biological activities such as terpenoids, alkaloids, and steroids. The development of new strategies for the assembly of these structures in a rapid and efficient manner has attracted the interest of synthetic chemists for a long time. The current research is focused mainly on the development of synthetic methods that can be performed under mild reaction conditions with a high tolerance to functional groups. In recent years, gold complexes have turned into excellent candidates for this aim, owing to their high reactivity, and are thus capable of promoting a wide range of transformations under mild conditions. Their remarkable efficiency has been thoroughly demonstrated in the synthesis of complex organic molecules from simple starting materials. This review summarizes the main synthetic strategies described for gold-catalyzed four-carbon ring formation, as well as their application in the synthesis of natural products.

Abstract
A nanoring-rotaxane supramolecular assembly with a Cy7 cyanine dye (hexamethylindotricarbocyanine) threaded along the axis of the nanoring was synthesized as a model for the energy transfer between the light-harvesting complex LH1 and the reaction center in purple bacteria photosynthesis. The complex displays efficient energy transfer from the central cyanine dye to the surrounding zinc porphyrin nanoring. We present a theoretical model that reproduces the absorption spectrum of the nanoring and quantifies the excitonic coupling between the nanoring and the central dye, thereby explaining the efficient energy transfer and demonstrating similarity with structurally related natural light-harvesting systems.

Abstract
A novel gold‐catalyzed cycloisomerization of 1,6‐diynes was achieved, providing an atom‐economic approach to a diverse set of bicyclo[2.2.1]hept‐5‐en‐2‐ones in moderate to good yields. With unsymmetrical starting materials with two different internal alkynyl substituents, to some extent, the regioselectivity could be controlled by both electronic and steric factors. This unprecedented reactivity pattern may inspire new and unconventional strategies for the preparation of bridged ring systems.

Abstract
A diastereoselective, gold-catalyzed cascading cycloisomerization of alkylidene cyclopropane bearing 1,5-enynes that terminates in a cyclo-addition of aldehydes has been developed. This diastereoselective reaction provides convergent access to novel polycyclic molecular structures (18 examples), and tolerates a diverse scope of aldehydes. Mechanistic studies reveal that the catalytic cycle rests at a digold off-cycle intermediate, one of which was isolated.

Abstract
The smallest and most strained member of a family of π-conjugated cyclic porphyrin oligomers was synthesized by using pentapyridyl templates based on ferrocene and corannulene. Both templates are effective for directing the synthesis of the butadiyne-linked cyclic pentamer, despite the fact that the radii of their N5 donor sets are too small by 0.5 Å and 0.9 Å, respectively (from DFT calculations). The five-porphyrin nanoring exhibits a structured absorption spectrum and its fluorescence extends to 1200 nm, reflecting strong π conjugation and Herzberg-Teller vibronic coupling.

Abstract
In this critical review the reactivity patterns observed with different types of diyne substrates in gold catalysis are discussed. Apart from the many examples from homogeneous catalysis, the few examples from heterogeneous gold catalysis are also included. With a proper arrangement of the two alkynes unique and exciting reactivity patterns like 1,3-carbonyl transpositions, carbene transfer reactions, cascade annulations, macrocyclisations or the formation of gold vinylidene intermediates are observed. These reactions are of interest for organic synthesis, for pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry and for material science.

Abstract
Gold catalyzed cycloisomerization of aromatic ring tethered vinylidenecyclopropane-enes provides a divergent synthetic protocol for the construction of O-containing fused heterocycles through controllable carbene or non-carbene related processes. The carbene induced process features a new amphiphilic strategy to generate a gold carbene via a rearrangement of vinylidenecyclopropane. Whereas, the electronic effect of the ortho-substituents switches the reaction mode onto the non-carbene related process, from which five- or six-membered rings are selectively produced through allyl-migration.

Abstract
Small alterations to the structure of a star-shaped template totally change its mode of operation. The hexapyridyl template directs the conversion of a porphyrin dimer to the cyclic hexamer, but deleting one pyridine site changes the product to the cyclic decamer, while deleting two binding sites changes the product to the cyclic octamer. This surprising switch in selectivity is explained by the formation of 2:1 caterpillar track complexes, in which two template wheels bind inside the nanoring. Caterpillar track complexes can also be prepared by binding the hexapyridyl template inside the 8- and 10-porphyrin nanorings. NMR exchange spectroscopy (EXSY) experiments show that these complexes exhibit correlated motion, in which the conrotatory rotation of the two template wheels is coupled to rotation of the nanoring track. In the case of the 10-porphyrin system, the correlated motion can be locked by binding palladium(II) dichloride between the two templates.

Abstract
A silver(i)-catalyzed three-component reaction of 2-alkylenecyclobutanone, N′-(2-alkynylbenzylidene)hydrazide with water gives rise to 3-(pyrazolo[5,1-a]isoquinolin-1-yl)propanoic acids in good yields through 6-endo cyclization, [3 + 2] cycloaddition, and rearrangement.
