Unexpected self-sorting self-assembly formation of a [4:4] sulfate:ligand cage from a preorganized tripodal urea ligand

Ligand Chirality Transfer from Solution State to the Crystalline Self-Assemblies in Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL) Active Lanthanide Systems

The synthesis of a family of chiral and enantiomerically pure pyridyl-diamide (pda) ligands that upon complexation with europium [Eu(CF3SO3)3] result in chiral complexes with metal centered luminescence is reported; the sets of enantiomers giving rise to both circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signatures. The solid-state structures of these chiral metallosupramolecular systems are determined using X-ray diffraction showing that the ligand chirality is transferred from solution to the solid state. This optically favorable helical packing arrangement is confirmed by recording the CPL spectra from the crystalline assembly by using steady state and enantioselective differential chiral contrast (EDCC) CPL Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy (CPL-LSCM) where the two enantiomers can be clearly distinguished.

Molecular Geometry-Directed Self-Recognition in the Self-Assembly of Giant Amphiphiles

Three sets of polyoxometalate (POM)-based amphiphilic hybrid macromolecules with different rigidity in their organic tails are used as models to understand the effect of molecular rigidity on their possible self-recognition feature during self-assembly processes. Self-recognition is achieved in the mixed solution of two structurally similar, sphere-rigid T-shape-linked oligofluorene(TOF₄ ) rod amphiphiles, with the hydrophilic clusters being Anderson (Anderson-TOF₄ ) and Dawson (Dawson-TOF₄ ), respectively. Anderson-TOF₄ is observed to self-assemble into onion-like multilayer structures and Dawson-TOF₄ forms multilayer vesicles. The self-assembly is controlled by the interdigitation of hydrophobic rods and the counterion-mediated attraction among charged hydrophilic inorganic clusters. When the hydrophobic blocks are less rigid, e.g., partially rigid polystyrene and fully flexible alkyl chains, self-recognition is not observed, attributing to the flexible conformation of hydrophobic molecules in the solvophobic domain. This study reveals that the self-recognition among amphiphiles can be achieved by the geometrical limitation of the supramolecular structure due to the rigidity of solvophobic domains.

A Crosslinked Ionic Organic Framework for Efficient Iodine and Iodide Remediation in Water

Iodine is widely used as an antimicrobial reagent for water disinfection in the wilderness and outer space, but residual iodine and iodide need to be removed for health reasons. Currently, it is challenging to remove low concentrations of iodine and iodide in water (≈5 ppm). Furthermore, the remediation of iodine and iodide across a broad temperature range (up to 90 °C) has not previously been investigated. In this work, we report a nitrate dimer-directed synthesis of a single-crystalline ionic hydrogen-bonded crosslinked organic framework (H_C OF-7). H_C OF-7 removes iodine and iodide species in water efficiently through halogen bonding and anion exchange, reducing the total iodine concentration to 0.22 ppm at room temperature. Packed H_C OF-7 columns were employed for iodine/iodide breakthrough experiments between 23 and 90 °C, and large breakthrough volumes were recorded (≥18.3 L g^-1 ). The high iodine/iodide removal benchmarks recorded under practical conditions make H_C OF-7 a promising adsorbent for water treatment.

Anion-Coordination-Driven Assembly: From Discrete Supramolecular Self-Assemblies to Functional Soft Materials

Anion templated assembly of supramolecular systems has been extensively explored in previous reports, whereas anions serve only as an auxiliary and spectator role. With the development of anion coordination chemistry in recent years, anion coordination-driven assembly (ACDA) has emerged as a new strategy for the construction of supramolecular self-assemblies. Anions are proved to exist as the main actors in the construction of supramolecular architectures, i. e., serve as the coordination center. This Review will focus on the recent progress in anion-coordination-driven assembly of discrete supramolecular architectures, such as helicates, polyhedrons and polygons, and the various applications of 'aniono'-systems. At the end of this Review, we highlight current challenges and opportunities for future research of anion-coordination-driven self-assembly.

Acid-Tolerant Sulfate Tetrahedral Cages from Anion-Coordination-Driven Assembly

Supramolecular cages have been constructed by anion-coordination-driven assembly (ACDA) in recent years and have shown unique host-guest interactions. However, most of the reported cages are made of the phosphate ion (PO₄ ^3- ); other anions have rarely been explored. Here we show for the first time that the sulfate ion (SO₄ ^2- ) is also able to form the A₄ L₄ tetrahedral motif with tris-bis(urea) ligands, but this is dependent on the stoichiometry of the sulfate ion (in solution). Notably, the sulfate cages display enhanced resistance for both Brønsted (pH as low as 4.3 in acetone containing 15 % water) and Lewis acids (metal complexes) compared to the corresponding phosphate cages, and thus could find applications where an acidic (proton or metals) environment is required.

Spectroscopic and Colorimetric Studies for Anions with a New Urea-Based Molecular Cleft

A new simple urea-based dipodal molecular cleft (L) has been synthesized and studied for its binding affinity for a variety of anions by 1H-NMR, UV-Vis and colorimetric techniques in DMSO-d6 and DMSO, respectively. The results from titration studies suggest that the receptor forms a 1:2 complex with each of the anions used via hydrogen bonding interactions and exhibits strong selectivity for fluoride among halides, showing the binding affinity in the order of fluoride > chloride > bromide > iodide; meanwhile, it displays moderate selectivity for acetate among oxoanions, showing the binding affinity in the order of acetate > dihydrogen phosphate > bicarbonate > hydrogen sulfate > nitrate. Colorimetric studies of L for anions in DMSO reveal that the receptor is capable of detecting fluoride, acetate, bicarbonate and dihydrogen phosphate, displaying a visible color change in the presence of the respective anions.

Squaramide-Based Self-Associating Amphiphiles for Anion Recognition

The synthesis and characterisation of two novel self-assembled amphiphiles (SSAs) SQS-1 and SQS-2 are reported. Both compounds, based on the squaramide motif, were fully soluble in a range of solvents and were shown to undergo self-assembly through a range of physical techniques. Self-assembly was shown to favour the formation of crystalline domains on the nanoscale but also fibrillar film formation, as suggested by SEM analysis. Moreover, both SQS-1 and SQS-2 were capable of anion recognition in DMSO solution as demonstrated using 1 H NMR and UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy, but displayed lower binding affinities for various anions when compared against other squaramide based receptors. In more competitive solvent mixtures SQS-1 gave rise to a colourimetric response in the presence of HPO42- that was clearly visible to the naked eye. We anticipate that the observed response is due to the basic nature of the HPO42- anion when compared against other biologically relevant anions.

A curved host and second guest cooperatively inhibit the dynamic motion of corannulene

Biomolecular systems show how host-guest binding can induce changes in molecular behavior, which in turn impact the functions of the system. Here we report an artificial host-guest system where dynamic adaptation during guest binding alters both host conformation and guest dynamics. The self-assembled cage host employed here possesses concave walls and a chirotopic cavity. Complementarity between the curved surfaces of fullerenes and the inner surface of the host cavity leads the host to reconfigure stereochemically in order to bind these guests optimally. The curved molecule corannulene undergoes rapid bowl-to-bowl inversion at room temperature. Its inversion barrier is increased upon binding, however, and increased further upon formation of a ternary complex, where corannulene and a cycloalkane are both bound together. The chiral nature of the host also leads to clear differences in the NMR spectra of ternary complexes involving corannulene and one or the other enantiomer of a chiral guest, which enables the determination of enantiomeric excess by NMR.

Narcissistic self-sorting in anion-coordination-driven assemblies

Three tris-bis(urea) ligands with triphenylamine-based C₃-symmetric spacers were synthesized, which assembled with sulfate or phosphate to form anionic A₃L₂ pinwheel helices (A = anion and L = ligand) and A₄L₄ tetrahedra, respectively. Interestingly, narcissistic self-sorting was observed in both structures from the mixture of the ligands, wherein each assembly contains only one type of ligand with no detectable mixed-ligand product as confirmed by the NMR and MS studies.

Highly Efficient, Tripodal Ion-Pair Receptors for Switching Selectivity between Acetates and Sulfates Using Solid-Liquid and Liquid-Liquid Extractions

A tripodal, squaramide-based ion-pair receptor 1 was synthesized in a modular fashion, and ¹H NMR and UV-vis studies revealed its ability to interact more efficiently with anions with the assistance of cations. The reference tripodal anion receptor 2, lacking a crown ether unit, was found to lose the enhancement in anion binding induced by presence of cations. Besides the ability to bind anions in enhanced manner by the “single armed” ion-pair receptor 3, the lack of multiple and prearranged binding sites resulted in its much lower affinity towards anions than in the case of tripodal receptors. Unlike with receptors 2 or 3, the high affinity of 1 towards salts opens up the possibility of extracting extremely hydrophilic sulfate anions from aqueous to organic phase. The disparity in receptor 1 binding modes towards monovalent anions and divalent sulfates assures its selectivity towards sulfates over other lipophilic salts upon liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) and enables the Hofmeister bias to be overcome. By changing the extraction conditions from LLE to SLE (solid–liquid extraction), a switch of selectivity from sulfates to acetates was achieved. X-ray measurements support the ability of anion binding by cooperation of the arms of receptor 1 together with simultaneous binding of cations.

Intramolecular N–H⋯OC hydrogen bonding between the inner amide groups dictates the receptor–anion complementarity in a tripodal receptor towards selective encapsulation of hydrogenphosphate in the outer urea cavity by multiple hydrogen bonds.

Regulating Higher-Order Organization through the Synergy of Two Self-Sorted Assemblies

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is the natural fibrous scaffold that regulates cell behavior in a hierarchical manner. By mimicking the dynamic and reciprocal interactions between ECM and cells, higher-order molecular self-assembly (SA), mediated through the dynamic growth of scaffold-like nanostructures assembled by different molecular components, was developed. Designed and synthesized were two self-sorted coumarin-based gelators, a peptide molecule and a benzoate molecule, which self-assemble into nanofibers and nanobelts, respectively, with different dynamic profiles. Upon the dynamic growth of the fibrous scaffold assembled from peptide gelators, nanobelts assembled from benzoate gelators transform into a layer-by-layer nanosheet, reaching ninefold increase in height. By using light and an enzyme, the spatial-temporal growth of the scaffold can be modified, leading to in situ height regulation of the higher-order architecture.

Binding of Hydrophobic Guests in a Coordination Cage Cavity is Driven by Liberation of "High-Energy" Water

The cavity of an M8 L12 cubic coordination cage can accommodate a cluster of ten water molecules in which the average number of hydrogen bonds per water molecule is 0.5 H-bonds less than it would be in the bulk solution. The presence of these "hydrogen-bond frustrated" or "high-energy" water molecules in the cavity results in the hydrophobic effect associated with guest binding being predominantly enthalpy-based, as these water molecules can improve their hydrogen-bonding environment on release. This contrasts with the classical form of the hydrophobic effect in which the favourable entropy change associated with release of ordered molecules from hydrophobic surfaces dominates. For several guests Van't Hoff plots showed that the free energy of binding in water is primarily enthalpy driven. For five homologous pairs of guests related by the presence or absence of a CH2 group, the incremental changes to ΔH and TΔS for guest binding-that is, ΔΔH and TΔΔS, the difference in contributions arising from the CH2 group-are consistently 5(±1) kJ mol-1 for ΔΔH and 0(±1) kJ mol-1 for TΔΔS. This systematic dominance of ΔH in the binding of hydrophobic guests is consistent with the view that guest binding is dominated by release of "high energy" water molecules into a more favourable solvation environment, as has been demonstrated recently for some members of the cucurbituril family.

Supramolecular Chemistry of Anionic Dimers, Trimers, Tetramers and Clusters

Two or more anions constrained in close proximity within a single pocket are found in a number of natural systems but a less common motif in artificial systems. This review summarizes work on anion receptors capable of stabilizing anionic dimers, trimers, tetramers and clusters in a well-defined fashion. These systems may provide insights into the fundamental chemistry of anion-anion interactions and provide a guide for understanding in greater detail a number of biological and environmental processes, as well as key tenants of relevance to supramolecular chemistry, extraction, transport, crystal engineering, and the like. The primary goal of this review is to provide a general introduction into multi-anion recognition chemistry for the benefit of supramolecular and non-supramolecular chemists alike.

Efficient stabilisation of a dihydrogenphosphate tetramer and a dihydrogenpyrophosphate dimer by a cyclic pseudopeptide containing 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole moieties

A cyclic pseudooctapeptide 2 is described containing 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole moieties. This compound features eight converging hydrogen bond donors along the ring, namely four amide NH and four triazole CH groups, which enable 2 to engage in interactions with anions. While fully deprotonated sulfate anions exhibit only moderate affinity for 2, protonated anions such as dihydrogenpyrophosphate and dihydrogenphosphate anions are strongly bound. Complexation of the phosphate-derived anions involves sandwiching of a dihydrogenpyrophosphate dimer or a dihydrogenphosphate tetramer between two pseudopeptide rings. X-ray crystallography provided structural information, while 1H NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and isothermal titration calorimetry demonstrated that these complexes are stable in solution (2.5 vol% water/DMSO) and can even be transferred without decomposition into the gas phase. The observed high thermodynamic stabilities are attributed to the mutual reinforcement of the interactions between the individual complex components, namely, hydrogen-bonding between the anions, multiple hydrogen bonding interactions between the anion aggregates and the triazole CH and NH hydrogen bond donors of 2, and potential dispersive interactions between the closely arranged pseudopeptide rings. Pseudopeptide 2 thus represents a promising lead for the construction of phosphate receptors, whose binding selectivity makes use of the unique ability of certain anions to assemble into higher aggregates.

A Bis-calix[4]pyrrole Enzyme Mimic That Constrains Two Oxoanions in Close Proximity

Herein we describe a large capsule-like bis-calix[4]pyrrole 1, which is able to host concurrently two dihydrogen phosphate anions within a relatively large internal cavity. Evidence for the concurrent, dual recognition of the encapsulated anions came from ¹H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies and ITC titrations carried out in CD₂Cl₂/CD₃OD (9/1, v/v) or dichloroethane (DCE), as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Receptor 1 was also found to bind two dianionic sulfate anions bridged by two water molecules in the solid state. The resulting sulfate dimer was retained in DCE solution, as evidenced by spectroscopic analyses. Finally, receptor 1 was found capable of accommodating two trianionic pyrophosphate anions in the cavity. The present experimental findings are supported by DFT calculations along with ¹H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies, ITC studies, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

A folded [2 × 2] metallo-supramolecular grid from a bis-tridentate (1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-picolinamide (tzpa) ligand

A flexible ditopic ligand 1 containing two N,N,O-tridentate (1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-picolinamide chelating pockets is reported and the formation of multimetallic architectures is explored in the solid and the solution phase. The self-assembled Zn^II complex [Zn₄(1)₄](ClO₄)₈ exhibited a folded [2 × 2] square grid supramolecular architecture that selectively assembled in MeCN solution as shown using various spectroscopic techniques. The closely related Fe^II complex shows equivalent behaviour in the solid state, while a discrete dinuclear species [Cu₂(NO₃)₄1]·5MeCN was the sole product observed in the solid state from the reaction between 1 and Cu^II under similar conditions.

Selective C70 encapsulation by a robust octameric nanospheroid held together by 48 cooperative hydrogen bonds

Self-assembly of multiple building blocks via hydrogen bonds into well-defined nanoconstructs with selective binding function remains one of the foremost challenges in supramolecular chemistry. Here, we report the discovery of a enantiopure nanocapsule that is formed through the self-assembly of eight amino acid functionalised molecules in nonpolar solvents through 48 hydrogen bonds. The nanocapsule is remarkably robust, being stable at low and high temperatures, and in the presence of base, presumably due to the co-operative geometry of the hydrogen bonding motif. Thanks to small pore sizes, large internal cavity and sufficient dynamicity, the nanocapsule is able to recognize and encapsulate large aromatic guests such as fullerenes C₆₀ and C₇₀. The structural and electronic complementary between the host and C₇₀ leads to its preferential and selective binding from a mixture of C₆₀ and C₇₀.

Individual hydrogen bonds are weak, so self-assembling multiple components via hydrogen bonding is a significant challenge. Here the authors report a robust, enantiopure nanocapsule held together by 48 cooperative hydrogen bonds, and use it for the selective binding of C₇₀.

Supramolecular anion recognition in water: synthesis of hydrogen-bonded supramolecular frameworks

The interaction of tetratopic amidinium-containing receptors with terephthalate anions leads to porous framework materials assembled through charge-assisted hydrogen bonds. The frameworks form in good yield within minutes in water at room temperature, but no framework material is obtained if other anions (Cl^-, Br^-, NO₃^-, SO₄^2- or isophthalate^2-) are used in place of terephthalate. Two forms of the framework can be prepared: one with a connected pore network, and a more dense phase with discrete voids. We demonstrate that these are the kinetic and thermodynamic products, respectively. Either framework can be prepared independently and can be converted to the other form in response to stimuli. Furthermore, the frameworks can be controllably disassembled and reassembled in response to acid/base triggers suggesting that this new class of materials may have applications in the selective encapsulation and release of guests.

Synthesis of tetrasubstituted 1H-indazolo[1,2-b]phthalazinedione derivatives bearing three-dimensional turbine-type structures via domino reaction of phthalhydrazide and vinylketones

A domino reaction of phthalhydrazide and vinylketone in the presence of phosphotungstic acid was established, and 3D turbine-type tetrasubstituted 1H-indazolo[1,2-b]phthalazinedione derivatives were conveniently obtained with up to 95% yield.

Anion coordinated capsules and pseudocapsules of tripodal amide, urea and thiourea scaffolds

This review provides a detailed and comparative account of the solid- and solution-states anion (halides and oxyanions) binding affinities of hydrogen bonding tripodal scaffolds.
