Abstract
A synthetic approach for the construction of functionalized diverse 1-pyrrolines incorporating β-quaternary carbon centers under mild reaction conditions has been reported, in which α-allyl α-(alkylideneamino)nitriles generated from a Lewis base-catalyzed allylic alkylation reaction engaged in a Lewis base-mediated tandem intramolecular cyclization to deliver the targeted molecules in a catalytically atom-economic fashion.

Abstract
![]()
An
iridium-catalyzed reductive generation of both stabilized and
unstabilized azomethine ylides and their application to functionalized
pyrrolidine synthesis via [3 + 2] dipolar cycloaddition reactions
is described. Proceeding under mild reaction conditions from both
amide and lactam precursors possessing a suitably positioned electron-withdrawing
or a trimethylsilyl group, using 1 mol% Vaska’s complex [IrCl(CO)(PPh3)2] and tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDS) as a terminal
reductant, a broad range of (un)stabilized azomethine ylides were
accessible. Subsequent regio- and diastereoselective, inter- and intramolecular
dipolar cycloaddition reactions with variously substituted electron-deficient
alkenes enabled ready and efficient access to structurally complex
pyrrolidine architectures. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations
of the dipolar cycloaddition reactions uncovered an intimate balance
between asynchronicity and interaction energies of transition structures,
which ultimately control the unusual selectivities observed in certain
cases.

Abstract
The α-metallated ylides [Ph3P-C-Z]-M+ (with Z=SO2Tol or CN and M=Na or K) were used as versatile nucleophiles for the facile access to ylide-substituted compounds. Halogenations, alkylations, carbonylations and functionalization reactions with main group element halides were easily accomplished by simple trapping reactions with the appropriate electrophiles. X-ray crystallographic studies of all compounds - including the first structures of α-fluorinated P-ylides - showed remarkable differences in the ylide backbone depending on the substituents. In the fluorinated compounds, a change from a fully planar to a pyramidalized ylidic carbon centre was observed despite the strongly anion-stabilizing ability of the yldiide substituent. π-Donation from the ylide substituent also resulted in geometric restrictions depending on the steric and electronic properties of the introduced substituents.

Abstract
Saturated heterocycles are important structural motifs in a range of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. As a result of their importance, syntheses of these molecules have been extensively investigated. Despite the progress in this area, the most adopted strategies are still often characterized with inefficiency or relying on functionalizations with specialized precursors and pre-existing cores. This review highlights a dynamic synthetic strategy for the direct synthesis of saturated heterocycles from intermolecular alkene difunctionalizations. These coupling processes are highly modular, and therefore, offer perhaps the most convenient means to prepare diverse heterocyclic structures in compound libraries for bioactivity evoluations.

Abstract
In contrast to the plethora of catalytic systems that enable access to any enantiomers of the chiral products by simply choosing between a pair of enantiomeric or pseudoenantiomeric chiral catalysts, few analogously effective protocols exist for the synthesis of compounds bearing multiple stereogenic centers with full control of the absolute and relative stereochemical configurations. Here, we report the application of our previously developed modular phosphoramidite-thioether ligands for the copper-catalyzed diastereodivergent asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides and nitroalkenes. Our catalytic system enables wide substrate scope, great stereochemical control, and high reaction efficiency.

Abstract
The one-pot reductive 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of secondary aromatic N-(trimethylsilylmethyl)amides with reactive dipolarophiles is reported. The method relies on the in situ generation of nonstabilized NH azomethine ylide dipoles via amide activation with triflic anhydride, partial reduction with 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (TMDS), and desilylation with cesium fluoride (CsF). Running under mild conditions, the reaction tolerated several sensitive functional groups and provided cycloadducts in 71-93% yields. The use of less reactive dipolarophile methyl acrylate led to the cycloadduct in only 40% yield. A (Z) geometric intermediate of NH-azomethine 1,3-dipole was postulated to account for the observed higher yields and higher cis diastereoselectivity for the substrates bearing an electron-withdrawing group. This model features an unconventional cyclic transition state via carbanion-aryl ring interaction. Because the starting secondary amides can be prepared from common primary amides, the current method also constitutes a two-step transformation of primary amides.

Abstract
Visible light induced photoredox catalysis is an efficient method for radical activation. Herein, we report the photoredox catalysis involving an intramolecular radical-radical coupling reaction that proceeds through a biradical intermediate. This protocol represents a new synthetic route to construct multi-substituted N-heterocycles. Four, five and six-membered N-heterocyclic structures with a quaternary carbon center are accessible under mild conditions.
