Abstract
Many amines with high toxicity always cause a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health; thus, their detection is important. Herein, a dual-mode colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on cellulose for detecting amines has been constructed by a new strategy. This sensor is made of a "negative response" indicator (Lum-MDI-CA) and a "positive response" indicator (perylene tetracarboxylic acid, PTCA). Lum-MDI-CA was obtained by attaching luminol onto cellulose chains, which emitted blue fluorescence and was quenched upon contact with amines. A possible mechanism of fluorescence quenching phenomenon is proposed by the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of Lum-MDI-CA. Subsequently, by simply mixing Lum-MDI-CA with PTCA, a dual-mode fluorescence sensor was designed for visual detection and classification of amines. When adding ammonia (NH3), morpholine (MOR), benzylamine (BNZ), diethylamine (DEA), and triethylamine (TEA), respectively, the dual-mode sensor showed visible different color changes under both UV light and daylight. In addition, owing to the excellent processibility and formability of cellulose acetate backbone, the prepared sensor can be easily processed into different material forms, including inks, coatings, films, and fibers, which still exhibit excellent fluorescence emission. Such sensors based on cellulose fluorescent materials are of great value in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Abstract
To meet the needs of food safety for simple, rapid, and low-cost analytical methods, a portable device based on a point discharge microplasma optical emission spectrometer (μPD-OES) was combined with machine learning to enable on-site food freshness evaluation and detection of adulteration. The device was integrated with two modular injection units (i.e., headspace solid-phase microextraction and headspace purge) for the examination of various samples. Aromas from meat and coffee were first introduced to the portable device. The aroma molecules were excited to specific atomic and molecular fragments at excited states by room temperature and atmospheric pressure microplasma due to their different atoms and molecular structures. Subsequently, different aromatic molecules obtained their own specific molecular and atomic emission spectra. With the help of machine learning, the portable device was successfully applied to the assessment of meat freshness with accuracies of 96.0, 98.7, and 94.7% for beef, pork, and chicken meat, respectively, through optical emission patterns of the aroma at different storage times. Furthermore, the developed procedures can identify beef samples containing different amounts of duck meat with an accuracy of 99.5% and classify two coffee species without errors, demonstrating the great potential of their application in the discrimination of food adulteration. The combination of machine learning and μPD-OES provides a simple, portable, and cost-effective strategy for food aroma analysis, potentially addressing field monitoring of food safety.

Abstract
Amine derivatives are signature organic compounds generated from rotten protein food. Thus, sensitive detection of the presence of amines in protein foods can be a critical technique for monitoring their quality. In this study, we develop an organic chemosensor probe, 4-(2-(3-(dicyanomethylene)- 5,5-dimethylcyclohex-1-en-1-yl)vinyl)-N,N-diethylbenzenaminium chloride (DEAH), to effectively detect amines through discernible bimodal (colorimetric and fluorometric) changes. By exploiting the amine-triggered intramolecular charge transfer behavior, DEAH exhibits rapid color changes (<1 s) with an excellent detection limit (36.9 nM) and also fluorescence turn-on in response to amine gas. Moreover, it possesses detection capabilities in versatile conditions, including solutions, solids, and coated films, suggesting its practical applicability. In particular, DEAH shows dramatic color change from yellow to violet with exceptional color difference (△Eab) over 98, repeatable usability, and excellent selectivity to amines. Based on these compelling advantages, we successfully demonstrate real-time monitoring of amine gas generated from spoiled protein foods using DEAH-coated films.

Abstract
The freshnessof the food is a major issue because spoiled food lacks critical nutrients for growth and could be harmful to human health if consumed directly. Nanomaterials are captivating due to their unique properties like large surface area, high selectivity, small dimension, great biocompatibility and conductivity, real-time onsite analysis, etc. which give them an advantage over conventional evaluation techniques. Despite these advantages of nanomaterials used in food safety and their preservation, food products can still get affected by various environmental factors (like pH, temperature, etc.), making the use of time-temperature indicators more condescending. This review is a comprehensive study on food safety, its causes, the responsible analytes, their remedies by various nanomaterials, the development of various nanosensors, and the various challenges faced in maintaining food safety standards to reduce the risk of contaminants.

Abstract
Elevated levels of ammonia in breath can be linked to medical complications, such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), that disturb the urea balance in the body. However, early stage CKD is usually asymptomatic, and mass screening is hindered by high instrumentation and operation requirements and accessible and reliable detection methods for CKD biomarkers, such as trace ammonia in breath. Enabling methods would have significance in population screening for early stage CKD patients. We herein report a method to effectively immobilize transition metal selectors in close proximity to a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) surface using pentiptycene polymers containing metal-chelating backbone structures. The robust and modular nature of the pentiptycene metallopolymer/SWCNT complexes creates a platform that accelerates sensor discovery and optimization. Using these methods, we have identified sensitive, selective, and robust copper-based chemiresistive ammonia sensors that display low parts per billion detection limits. We have added these hybrid materials to the resonant radio frequency circuits of commercial near-field communication (NFC) tags to achieve robust wireless detection of ammonia at physiologically relevant levels. The integrated devices offer a noninvasive and cost-effective approach for early detection and monitoring of CKD.

Abstract
Triethylamine (TEA) poses a significant threat to our health and is extremely difficult to detect at the parts-per-billion (ppb) level at room temperature. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are versatile materials used in chemiresistive vapor sensing. However, achieving high sensitivity and selectivity with a low detection limit remains a challenge for pristine CNTs, hindering their widespread commercial application. To address these issues, we propose functionalized multiwalled CNTs (MWCNTs) with carboxylic acid (COOH)-based sensing channels for ultrasensitive TEA detection under ambient conditions. Advanced structural analyses confirmed the necessary modification of MWCNTs after functionalization. The sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity to TEA in air, with a superior noise-free signal (10 ppb), an extremely low limit of detection (LOD ≈ 0.8 ppb), excellent repeatability, and long-term stability under ambient conditions. Moreover, the response values became more stable, demonstrating excellent humidity resistance (40-80% RH). Notably, the functionalized MWCNT sensor exhibited improved response and recovery kinetics (200 and 400 s) to 10 ppm of TEA compared to the pristine MWCNT sensor (400 and 1300 s), and the selectivity coefficient for TEA gas was improved by approximately three times against various interferants, including ammonia, formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide. The remarkable improvements in TEA detection were mainly associated with the large specific surface area, abundant active sites, adsorbed oxygen, and other defects. The sensing mechanism was thoroughly explained by using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This study provides a new platform for CNT-based chemiresistive sensors with high selectivity, low detection limits, and enhanced precision with universal potential for applications in food safety and environmental monitoring.

Abstract
Food safety is a burning global issue in this present era. The prevalence of harmful food additives and contaminants in everyday food is a significant cause for concern as they can adversely affect human health. More particularly, among the different food contaminants, the use of excessive pesticides in agricultural products is severely hazardous. So, the optical detection of residual pesticides is an effective strategy to counter the hazardous effect and ensure food safety. In this perspective, nanomaterials have played a leading role in defending the open threat against food safety instigated by the reckless use of pesticides. Now, nanomaterial-based optical detection of pesticides has reached full pace and needs an inclusive discussion. This Review covers the advancement of photoprocess-based optical detection of pesticides categorically using nanomaterials. Here, we have thoroughly dissected the photoprocesses (aggregation and aggregation-induced emission (AIE), charge transfer and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), electron transfer and photoinduced electron transfer (PET), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), hydrogen bonding, and inner filter effect) and categorically demarcated their significant role in the optical detection of pesticides by luminescent nanomaterials over the last few years.

Abstract
Luminescent metal-organic framework composites with multiple luminescence emissions have been efficient sensing platforms. Herein, a fluorescent sensor (RhB@1-0.4) with dual-emission fluorescence properties was prepared by introducing rhodamine B (RhB) into the framework of complex 1, [Mn2.5(HCPCP)(H2O)4]·(CH3CN)0.5 [HCPCP = hexa-(4-carboxyl-phenoxy)-cyclotriphosphazene and CH3CN = acetonitrile), which is a novel crystalline two-dimensional (2D) coordinated organic framework material. It is a highly desirable material, realizing a ratiometric fluorescence response to putrescine with a high signal-to-noise ratio, and the detection limit can be as low as 6.8 μM. In addition, RhB@1-0.4 exhibited a better fluorescent sensing performance for aromatic diamines and nitrophenols compared with that of complex 1. It is a potential functionalized MOF material for the application of multichannel fluorescence sensing.

Abstract
A luminescent trimethylamine (TMA) sensor, PTMA-Ir, has been designed and synthesized through immobilizing a phosphorescent iridium(III) complex on a TMA-imprinted polymer. Detailed study shows that the quenching of phosphorescence of PTMA-Ir can serve as a reporter for the binding of TMA on the imprinting sites, thus providing a sensitive, selective, and rapid detection of TMA in both aqueous solutions and gaseous states. Loading PTMA-Ir on filter paper produced a deposition T-Ir, the phosphorescence of which is quenched within 5 s upon exposure to TMA vapor with detection limits of 9.0 ± 0.1 ppm under argon and 15.0 ± 0.1 ppm in an air atmosphere. This work provided an effective method for establishing an imprinting polymer-immobilized luminescent amine sensor.

Abstract
The freshness of fish and shrimp is closely associated with food safety, hence it is a wide concern to develop a facile and effective method for fast, non-destructive and visual screening the freshness of fish and shrimp. Herein, we developed a chromogenic and fluorogenic sensor (RFCC) based on resorufin for sensing of biogenic amines including cadaverine and putrescine. RFCC underwent aminolysis with cadaverine or putrescine, displaying a remarkable fluorescence turn on response at 593 nm along with obvious color change from colorless to pink. RFCC was fabricated into test strips to sense cadaverine vapor, and the RGB value of test strips showed a good linear relationship with the concentration of cadaverine (0.5 - 8.2 × 103 ppm). The RFCC tag was used to in situ screen the freshness of fish and shrimp according to obvious fluorescence change, and satisfactory results were achieved. Furthermore, this test strip was validated by total volatile base nitrogen (TVBN), providing a simple, low cost and portable tool to screen the freshness of fish and shrimp for consumers and suppliers without expensive instrumentation.

Abstract
Sensor arrays are currently attracting the interest of researchers due to their potential of overcoming the limitations of single sensors regarding selectivity, required by specific applications. Among the materials used to develop sensor arrays, graphene has not been so far extensively exploited, despite its remarkable sensing capability. Here we present the development of a graphene-based sensor array prepared by dropcasting nanostructure and nanocomposite graphene solution on interdigitated substrates, with the aim to investigate the capability of the array to discriminate several gases related to specific applications, including environmental monitoring, food quality tracking, and breathomics. This goal is achieved in two steps: at first the sensing properties of the array have been assessed through ammonia exposures, drawing the calibration curves, estimating the limit of detection, which has been found in the ppb range for all sensors, and investigating stability and sensitivity; then, after performing exposures to acetone, ethanol, 2-propanol, sodium hypochlorite, and water vapour, chemometric tools have been exploited to investigate the discrimination capability of the array, including principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and Mahalanobis distance. PCA shows that the array was able to discriminate all the tested gases with an explained variance around 95%, while with an LDA approach the array can be trained to accurately recognize unknown gas contribution, with an accuracy higher than 94%.

Abstract
Biogenic amines (BAs), nitrogenous molecules usually present in different foods, can be considered an indicator of freshness and food quality since their amount increases during food spoilage. Their detection, possibly in real time via the use of smart packaging, is therefore of crucial importance to ensure food safety and to fulfill consumers' demand. To this end, colorimetric sensors are considered one of the most feasible solutions. Here, we report a user-friendly colorimetric sensing paper able to detect BAs via the naked eye. The sensing molecule is the aglycone genipin, a natural cross-linking agent extracted from gardenia fruit, able to bind BAs producing water-soluble blue pigments. The paper sensor was applied to chicken meat quality monitoring and a quantitative analysis was performed with image acquisition via a smartphone camera, achieving a limit of detection equivalent to 0.1 mM of putrescine. The suitability of the BA sensing paper was assessed by integrating the sensor into smart packaging and analyzing commercial chicken meat samples stored at different temperatures; the results of the sensor paralleled the "best before date" indicated on the label, confirming the potential applicability of the sensor as a smart label.

Abstract
The increasing demand for food production has necessitated the development of sensitive and reliable methods of analysis, which allow for the optimization of storage and distribution while ensuring food safety. Methods to quantify and monitor volatile and biogenic amines are key to minimizing the waste of high-protein foods and to enable the safe consumption of fresh products. Novel materials and device designs have allowed the development of portable and reliable sensors that make use of different transduction methods for amine detection and food quality monitoring. Herein, we review the past decade's advances in volatile amine sensors for food quality monitoring. First, the role of volatile and biogenic amines as a food-quality index is presented. Moreover, a comprehensive overview of the distinct amine gas sensors is provided according to the transduction method, operation strategies, and distinct materials (e.g., metal oxide semiconductors, conjugated polymers, carbon nanotubes, graphene and its derivatives, transition metal dichalcogenides, metal organic frameworks, MXenes, quantum dots, and dyes, among others) employed in each case. These include chemoresistive, fluorometric, colorimetric, and microgravimetric sensors. Emphasis is also given to sensor arrays that record the food quality fingerprints and wireless devices that operate as radiofrequency identification (RFID) tags. Finally, challenges and future opportunities on the development of new amine sensors are presented aiming to encourage further research and technological development of reliable, integrated, and remotely accessible devices for food-quality monitoring.

Abstract
Ionic covalent organic frameworks (iCOFs) are new examples of porous materials and have shown great potential for various applications. When functionalized with suitable emission sites, guest uptake via the ionic moieties of iCOFs can cause a significant change in luminescence, making them excellent candidates for chemosensors. In here, we present a luminescence sensor in the form of an ionic covalent organic framework (TGH+•PD) composed of guanidinium and phenanthroline moieties for the detection of ammonia and primary aliphatic amines. TGH+•PD exhibits strong emission enhancement in the presence of selective primary amines due to the suppression of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) with an ultra-low detection limit of 1.2 × 10‒7 M for ammonia. The presence of ionic moieties makes TGH+•PD highly dispersible in water, while deprotonation of the guanidinium moiety by amines restricts its ICT process and signals their presence by enhanced fluorescence emission. The presence of ordered pore walls introduces size selectivity among analyte molecules, and the iCOF has been successfully used to monitor meat products that release biogenic amine vapors upon decomposition due to improper storage. Ionic covalent organic frameworks (iCOFs) are new examples of porous materials and show great potential for various applications. Here, the authors demonstrate functionalization of an iCOFs with suitable emission sites and application as chemosensor for amine detection with high sensitivity which can be used to monitor meat spoilage.

Abstract
With the rapid advances in terahertz (THz) spectroscopy, metamaterial-free THz sensors have been of importance due to efficient cost, high sensitivity and overcoming the limited tunability of the optical constants of metals. Here, a metamaterial-free and flexible THz sensor based on nitrogen-doping carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) coupled with signal-enhancing Au NPs was proposed for detecting nereistoxin-related insecticides (NRIs). Sensitivity and selectivity for NRIs detection have been realized over the range of 3.3-100 μg/L with good linear fitting (R2 ≥ 0.9003) and LOD was 1.33 μg/L. Accuracy was validated by the recovery rates of 105.87-109.75% of NRI in spiked food-matrix sample. These results indicated the developed signal-enhancing THz method, validated by LC-MS/MS, exhibited high sensitivity and simplicity detection, which has noteworthy potential for applications in food safety and environment monitoring.

Abstract
In this work, we report the fabrication of a two-member fluorescence sensor array that enables the assessment of three stages (fresh, slightly spoiled, and moderately or severely spoiled) of meat spoilage. The first member of the array, which has strong chalcogen bonding and sulfur-π interactions with organic sulfides, exhibits very high sensitivity, while the second member of the array, which has weak chalcogen bonding and sulfur-π interactions with organic sulfides, exhibits lower sensitivity. On the basis of the combined fluorescence responses of the two members, three stages of meat spoilage, including fresh, slightly spoiled, and moderately or severely spoiled, can be monitored. Notably, using the volatiles collected from 5 g of meat products over a short period of time (1 min), this two-member sensor array achieves sensitive responses to the organic sulfides emitted from the meats. The capacity of this method to rapidly assess meat freshness facilitates its practical application, as illustrated by the monitoring of the freshness of chicken and pork products in the real world.

Abstract
Monitoring food quality throughout the food supply chain is critical to ensuring global food safety and minimizing food losses. Here we find that simply by mixing an aqueous solution of sugar-stabilized Ag+ and amines in an open vessel leads to the generation of Ag NPs and an intelligent evaluation system based on a colorimetric Ag+ probe is developed for real-time visual monitoring of food freshness. The self-assembly reaction between methylamine (MA) generated during meat storage and the colorimetric Ag+ probe produces different color changes that indicate changes in the quality of the meat. The colorimetric Ag+ probe was integrated into food packaging systems for real-time monitoring of chilled broiler meat freshness. The proposed evaluation system provides a versatile approach for detecting biogenic amines and monitoring chilled broiler meat freshness and it has the advantages of high selectivity, real-time and on-site measurements, sensitivity, economy, and safety and holds great public health significance.

Abstract
Fish-based food products play important roles in our daily diet. The related food safety is vitally essential for human health, thus it is very necessary to screen the freshness of fish-based foods. In this work, we presented a ratiometric fluorescent probe PTCN for the determination of cadaverine, a metabolic biomarker of the spoilage of fish. PTCN displayed a ratiometric fluorescence response towards cadaverine with good specificity, high sensitivity (LOD = 46 nM) and ultra-fast response (<15 s), and thus has been successfully utilized to determine cadaverine from the spoilage of fish. PTCN was fabricated into cheap and portable sensing tags, which can visually detect gaseous cadaverine with obvious fluorescence color transformation from red to green and a low detection limit (8.65 ppm). Moreover, the PTCN tags were used as smart fluorescent tags for non-contact and visual monitoring of cadaverine in fish. Furthermore, the ratiometric fluorescence signals were utilized to create a smartphone-adaptable digital sensing profile for indicating cadaverine in fish products.

Abstract
Monitoring food spoilage is one of the most effective methods for preventing food poisoning caused by biogenic amines or microbes. Therefore, various analytical techniques have been introduced to detect low concentrations of cadaverine (CV) and putrescine (PT), which are representative biogenic polyamines involved in food spoilage (5-8 ppm at the stage of initial decomposition after storage for 5 days at 5 °C and 17-186 ppm at the stage of advanced decomposition after storage for 7 days at 5 °C). Although previous methods showed selective CV and PT detection even at low concentrations, the use of these methods remains challenging in research areas that require in-situ, real-time, on-site monitoring. In this study, we demonstrated for the first time an in-situ high-performance chemical receptor-conjugated graphene electronic nose (CRGE-nose) whose limits of detection (LODs), 27.04 and 7.29 ppb, for CV and PT are up to 102 times more sensitive than those of conventional biogenic amine sensors. Specifically, the novel chemical receptors 2,7-bis(3-morpholinopropyl)benzo[lmn][3,8] phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone (NaPhdiMor (NPM)) and 2,7-bis(2-((3-morpholinopropyl)amino)ethyl)benzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone (NaPhdiEtAmMor (NPEAM)) were designed on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and their interaction mechanism was characterized by a DFT 3D simulation. Interestingly, the CRGE-nose was connected on a micro sim chip substrate via wire bonding and then integrated into wireless portable devices, resulting in a cost-effective, high-performance prototype CRGE-nose device capable of on-site detection. The portable CRGE-nose can be used for in-situ monitoring of CV and PT concentration changes as low as 27.04 and 7.29 ppb in real meats such as pork, beef, lamb and chicken.

Abstract
Gas sensors based on organic molecules are attractive for their tailored molecular structures and controllable functions, but weak interfacial adhesion between sensing materials and supporting substrates has severely hampered their practical applications, particularly in harsh environments. Here, inspired by the combined anchoring-recognizing feature of natural olfactory systems, an adhesive-integrated-agent strategy to integrate the adhesive unit (poly(dimethylsiloxane)) with the sensing unit (organoplatinum(II)) into one chemistry entity, creating robust and sensitive nanobelt array gas sensors is demonstrated. Systematic theoretical and experimental studies reveal that incorporating adhesive units significantly enhances the interfacial adhesion of the array sensors and gas-bridged super-exchange electronic couplings of sensing units ensure their efficient gas-sensing performance. The high shear strength of ≈7.05 × 106 N m-2 allows these arrays to resist aggressive ultrasonication, tape peeling, or repeated bending without compromising their sensing performance. This molecular engineering strategy opens a new guideline to develop robust gas sensors.

Abstract
Polymeric nanocomposites have received significant attention in both scientific and industrial research in recent years. The demand for new methods of food preservation to ensure high-quality, healthy foods with an extended shelf life has increased. Packaging, a crucial feature of the food industry, plays a vital role in satisfying this demand. Polymeric nanocomposites exhibit remarkably improved packaging properties, including barrier properties, oxygen impermeability, solvent resistance, moisture permeability, thermal stability, and antimicrobial characteristics. Bio-based polymers have drawn considerable interest to mitigate the influence and application of petroleum-derived polymeric materials and related environmental concerns. The integration of nanotechnology in food packaging systems has shown promise for enhancing the quality and shelf life of food. This article provides a general overview of bio-based polymeric nanocomposites comprising polymer matrices and inorganic nanoparticles, and describes their classification, fabrication, properties, and applications for active food packaging systems with future perspectives.

Abstract
Quality control in the production and processing of raw meat is currently one of the biggest concerns for food industry and would benefit from portable and wireless sensors capable of detecting the onset of spoilage. Raw meat is a natural source of biogenic and volatile amines as byproducts of decarboxylation reactions, and the levels of these compounds can be utilized as quality control parameters. We report herein a hybrid chemiresistor sensor based on inorganic nanofibers of SiO2:ZnO (an n-type material) and single-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized with 3,5-dinitrophenyls (a p-type material) with dosimetric sensitivity ∼40 times higher for amines than for other volatile organic compounds, which also provides excellent selectivity. The hybrid nanomaterial-based chemiresistor sensory material was used to convert radio-frequency identification tags into chemically actuated resonant devices, which constitute wireless sensors that can be potentially employed in packaging to report on the quality of meat. Specifically, the as-developed wireless tags report on cumulative amine exposure inside the meat package, showing a decrease in radio-frequency signals to the point wherein the sensor ceased to be smartphone-readable. These hybrid material-modified wireless tags offer a path to scalable, affordable, portable, and wireless chemical sensor technology for food quality monitoring without the need to open the packaging.

Abstract
Autonomous electronic microsystems smaller than the diameter of a human hair (<100 μm) are promising for sensing in confined spaces such as microfluidic channels or the human body. However, they are difficult to implement due to fabrication challenges and limited power budget. Here we present a 60 × 60 μm electronic microsystem platform, or SynCell, that overcomes these issues by leveraging the integration capabilities of two-dimensional material circuits and the low power consumption of passive germanium timers, memory-like chemical sensors, and magnetic pads. In a proof-of-concept experiment, we magnetically positioned SynCells in a microfluidic channel to detect putrescine. After we extracted them from the channel, we successfully read out the timer and sensor signal, the latter of which can be amplified by an onboard transistor circuit. The concepts developed here will be applicable to microsystems targeting a variety of applications from microfluidic sensing to biomedical research.

Abstract
Modern solid-state gas sensors approaching ppb-level limit of detection open new perspectives for process control, environmental monitoring and exhaled breath analysis. Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are especially promising for gas sensing due to their outstanding sensitivities, low cost and small power consumption. However, they suffer of poor selectivity, requiring development of cross-selective arrays to distinguish analytes, and environmental instability, especially in humid air. Here we present the first fully integrated OFET-based electronic nose with the whole sensor array located on a single substrate. It features down to 30 ppb limit of detection provided by monolayer thick active layers and operates in air with up to 95% relative humidity. By means of principal component analysis, it is able to discriminate toxic air pollutants and monitor meat product freshness. The approach presented paves the way for developing affordable air sensing networks for the Internet of Things.

Abstract
Putrescine and cadaverine are biogenic amines that serve as potential biomarkers for several types of cancers and monitoring food quality. Electrochemical sensing of putrescine and cadaverine by non-enzymatic routes remains a challenge because of their inertness at unmodified electrode surfaces and hence a liquid-liquid interface strategy has been employed for their detection. In the present study, electrochemical sensing of cadaverine and putrescine has been demonstrated by simple and facilitated ion-transfer processes using a liquid-liquid microinterface supported by a microcapillary. A microinterface was constructed in different configurations by varying the aqueous phase composition in the absence and presence of dibenzo-18-crown-6, and the ion-transfer ability of putrescine and cadaverine was studied in these configurations. A peak shaped voltammogram was observed in the backward scan, due to the linear diffusion of putrescine and cadaverine from the organic to the aqueous phase. The detection ability in the presence of dibenzo-18-crown-6 was observed in the concentration ranges of 0.25-25 μM and 0.25-40 μM for putrescine and cadaverine with detection limits of 0.11 and 0.17 μM respectively. In the presence of dibenzo-18-crown-6, the electrochemical sensing of putrescine and cadaverine was more pronounced compared to the simple ion-transfer process.

Abstract
The freshness of meat has always been the focus of attention from consumers and suppliers for health and economic reasons. Usually, amine vapors, as one of the main components of the gas produced in the process of meat spoilage, can be used to monitor meat spoilage. Here, a new ratiometric cataluminescence (CTL) sensor based on energy transfer was developed to identify amine vapors and monitor meat freshness. After Tb doping, amine vapors exhibit a dual-wavelength (490 and 555 nm) property of CTL signals when reacted on the surface of Tb-doped La2O2CO3, and the ratio of I555 to I490 (R555/490) is a unique value for a given analyte within a wide range of concentrations. To illustrate the new sensor, 15 amine vapors were successfully identified using R555/490, including homologues and isomers. Besides, this sensor was used to monitor four meats, and the freshness of meats can be distinguished by cluster analysis successfully. Moreover, further discussion of energy-transfer phenomena and influence factors has facilitating effects on exploring the mechanism of energy transfer at the gas-solid interface.

Abstract
Recent advances in nanomaterial design and synthesis has resulted in robust sensing systems that display superior analytical performance. The use of nanomaterials within sensors has accelerated new routes and opportunities for the detection of analytes or target molecules. Among others, carbon-based sensors have reported biocompatibility, better sensitivity, better selectivity and lower limits of detection to reveal a wide range of organic and inorganic molecules. Carbon nanomaterials are among the most extensively studied materials because of their unique properties spanning from the high specific surface area, high carrier mobility, high electrical conductivity, flexibility, and optical transparency fostering their use in sensing applications. In this paper, a comprehensive review has been made to cover recent developments in the field of carbon-based nanomaterials for sensing applications. The review describes nanomaterials like fullerenes, carbon onions, carbon quantum dots, nanodiamonds, carbon nanotubes, and graphene. Synthesis of these nanostructures has been discussed along with their functionalization methods. The recent application of all these nanomaterials in sensing applications has been highlighted for the principal applicative field and the future prospects and possibilities have been outlined.

Abstract
Optical waveguide gas sensor with bromocresol purple (BCP) nano-film (70-80 nm) composited with silicone deposited on surface of K+-ion exchanged glass slide was fabricated and applied to detect amine gases released during mutton spoilage to test mutton freshness with the help of laser light (632 m). Gas sensing measurements (output light intensity vs. time) proved its high selectivity and good sensitivity (0.01 ppm) toward amines among volatile organic compounds. The optimal fabricating condition (2600 rpm, 0.10% BCP, 5.17% silicone) was selected experimentally, displaying 1 s and 12 s response-recovery time toward gases released from mutton samples stored at 5 °C and 25 °C respectively. The sensing mechanism was explained by combination and competition of diffusion-reaction, considering deprotonating reaction of bromocresol purple molecules and molecular size of analyte gases in diffusion process. UV-vis spectroscopy was used to select the specific wavelength of laser light source in optical waveguide performance and to detect the total volatile basic nitrogen contents in mutton sample to confirm the practicability of as-prepared optical waveguide sensor in detecting mutton freshness. The fabricated sensor is able to detect 7.2 mg/100 g gases released from mutton decomposition, providing a simple, fast, and cheap method to detect meat freshness.

Abstract
Perylene imide (PI) molecules and materials have been extensively studied for optical chemical sensors, particularly those based on fluorescence and colorimetric mode, taking advantage of the unique features of PIs such as structure tunability, good thermal, optical and chemical stability, strong electron affinity, strong visible light absorption and high fluorescence quantum yield. PI-based optical chemosensors have now found broad applications in gas phase detection of chemicals, including explosives, biomarkers of some food and diseases (such as organic amines (alkylamines and aromatic amines)), benzene homologs, organic peroxides, phenols and nitroaromatics, etc. In this review, the recent research on PI-based fluorometric and colorimetric sensors, as well as array technology incorporating multiple sensors, is reviewed along with the discussion of potential applications in environment, health and public safety areas. Specifically, we discuss the molecular design and aggregate architecture of PIs in correlation with the corresponding sensor performances (including sensitivity, selectivity, response time, recovery time, reversibility, etc.). We also provide a perspective summary highlighting the great potential for future development of PIs optical chemosensors, especially in the sensor array format that will largely enhance the detection specificity in complexed environments.

Abstract
Food industry is always looking for more innovative and accurate ways to monitor the food safety and quality control of final products. Current detection techniques of analytes are costly and time-consuming, and occasionally require professional experts and specialized tools. The usage of nanomaterials in sensory systems has eliminated not only these drawbacks but also has advantages such as higher sensitivity and selectivity. This article first presents a general overview of the current studies conducted on the detection of spoilage and adulteration in foods from 2015 to 2020. Then, the sensory properties of nanomaterials including metal and magnetic nanoparticles, carbon nanostructures (nanotubes, graphene and its derivatives, and nanofibers), nanowires, and electrospun nanofibers are presented. The latest investigations and advancements in the application of nanomaterial-based sensors in detecting spoilage (food spoilage pathogens, toxins, pH changes, and gases) and adulterants (food additives, glucose, melamine, and urea) have also been discussed in the following sections. To conclude, these sensors can be applied in the smart packaging of food products to meet the demand of consumers in the new era.

Abstract
Two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with vertically aligned (VA) layers exhibits significantly enriched surface-exposed edge sites with an abundance of dangling bonds owing to its intrinsic crystallographic anisotropy. Such structural variation renders the material with exceptionally high chemical reactivity and chemisorption ability, making it particularly attractive for high-performance electrochemical sensing. This superior property can be further promoted as far as it is integrated on mechanically stretchable substrates well retaining its surface-exposed defective edges, projecting opportunities for a wide range of applications utilizing its structural uniqueness and mechanical flexibility. In this work, we explored VA-2D MoS2 layers configured in laterally stretchable forms for multifunctional nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensors. Large-area (>cm2) VA-2D MoS2 layers grown by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method were directly integrated onto a variety of flexible substrates with serpentine patterns judiciously designed to accommodate a large degree of tensile strain. These uniquely structured VA-2D MoS2 layers were demonstrated to be highly sensitive to NO2 gas of controlled concentration preserving their intrinsic structural and chemical integrity, e.g., significant current response ratios of ∼160-380% upon the introduction of NO2 at a level of 5-30 ppm. Remarkably, they exhibited such a high sensitivity even under lateral stretching up to 40% strain, significantly outperforming previously reported 2D MoS2 layer-based NO2 gas sensors of any structural forms. Underlying principles for the experimentally observed superiority were theoretically unveiled by density functional theory (DFT) calculation and finite element method (FEM) analysis. The intrinsic high sensitivity and large stretchability of VA-2D MoS2 layers confirmed in this study are believed to be applicable in sensing diverse gas species, greatly broadening their versatility in stretchable and wearable technologies.

Abstract
With the rapid advances in functional optoelectronics, the research on carbon-based materials and devices has become increasingly important at the terahertz frequency range owing to their advantages in terms of weight, cost, and freely bendable flexibility. Here, we report an effective material and device design for a terahertz plasmonic metasurface sensor (PMS) based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs). CNT metasurfaces based on silicon wafers have been prepared and obvious resonant transmission peaks are observed experimentally. The enhanced resonant peaks of transmission spectra are attributed to the surface plasmon polariton resonance, and the transmission peaks are further well explained by the Fano model. Furthermore, the different concentration gradients of pesticides (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic and chlorpyrifos solutions) have been detected by the designed PMSs, showing the lowest detection mass of 10 ng and the sensitivities of 1.38 × 10-2/ppm and 2.0 × 10-3/ppm, respectively. Good linear relationships between transmission amplitude and pesticide concentration and acceptable reliability and stability have been obtained. These materials and device strategies provide opportunities for novel terahertz functional devices such as sensors, detectors, and wearable terahertz imagers.

Abstract
Artificial scent screening systems (known as electronic noses, E-noses) have been researched extensively. A portable, automatic, and accurate, real-time E-nose requires both robust cross-reactive sensing and fingerprint pattern recognition. Few E-noses have been commercialized because they suffer from either sensing or pattern-recognition issues. Here, cross-reactive colorimetric barcode combinatorics and deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) are combined to form a system for monitoring meat freshness that concurrently provides scent fingerprint and fingerprint recognition. The barcodes-comprising 20 different types of porous nanocomposites of chitosan, dye, and cellulose acetate-form scent fingerprints that are identifiable by DCNN. A fully supervised DCNN trained using 3475 labeled barcode images predicts meat freshness with an overall accuracy of 98.5%. Incorporating DCNN into a smartphone application forms a simple platform for rapid barcode scanning and identification of food freshness in real time. The system is fast, accurate, and non-destructive, enabling consumers and all stakeholders in the food supply chain to monitor food freshness.

Abstract
We report the dispersion of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) using pentiptycene polymers and their use in chemiresistance-based and QCM-D sensors. Poly(p-phenylene ethynylene)s (PPEs) incorporating pentiptycene moieties present a concave surface that promotes π-π interactions and van der Waals interactions with SWCNTs. In contrast to more common polymer-dispersing mechanisms that involve the wrapping of polymers around the SWCNTs, we conclude that the H-shape of pentiptycene groups and the linear rigid-rod structure creates a slot for nanotube binding. UV-vis-NIR, Raman, and fluorescence spectra and TEM images of polymer/SWCNTs support this dispersion model, which shows size selectivity to SWCNTs with diameters of 0.8-0.9 nm. Steric bulk on the channels is problematic, and tert-butylated pentiptycenes do not form stable dispersions with SWCNTs. This result, along with the diameter preference, supports the model in which the SWCNTs are bound to the concave clefts of the pentiptycenes. The binding model suggests that the polymer/SWCNTs complex creates galleries, and we have demonstrated the binding of benzene, toluene, and o-xylene (BTX) vapors as the basis for a robust, sensitive, and selective sensing platform for BTX detection. The utility of our sensors is demonstrated by the detection of benzene at the OSHA short-term exposure limit of 5 ppm in air.

Abstract
Fish products are one of the preferred products in modern healthy diets, because they contain unqualified proteins, polyunsaturated fatty acids and a variety of vitamins and minerals. However, because of their vulnerability to deterioration, methods to maintain their freshness have attracted wide attention. Intelligent packaging can effectively monitor the quality and safety of fish products, provide warning, and has a great market and development potential. Therefore, this paper reviews the research progress of intelligent packaging technology used to monitor the freshness of fish products. The quality attributes of freshness of fish products are summarized. The classification, principle and latest application progress of three advanced technologies, indicator, sensor and radio frequency identification (RFID), are summarized. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of the intelligent packaging technology for monitoring the freshness of products are discussed, and the current research results are summarized and prospected.

Abstract
Because of the involvement of the gas-solid diffusion, device fabrication, and the relatively complex photophysical process, the lanthanide complexes are rarely exploited as fluorescence sensors for volatile compound (VC) detection. Herein, we report the first example of a discrete 3D Ln-based architecture as a sensor for VCs. The designed Eu4L4 tetrahedral cage shows highly selective, rapidly reversible, and turn-on emissive responses toward volatile amines/NH3 in a spin-coated film. Through the comprehensive spectral characteristic and density functional theory calculation, an intermolecular weak nucleophilic interaction is proposed for this response mechanism. Combining this weak interactions with the permeability of the cage, the film presents subsecond to second timescales rapid response; combining the fitting electrophilic capability of the β-diketonate units to amine nitrogen with the tunable intramolecular charge-transfer feature, the cage shows excellent selectivity and turn-on emissive response. This work provides a new clue to develop the lanthanide complexes as luminescence probes for VCs.

Abstract
We demonstrated in this work the use of affinity ionic liquids, AIL 1 and AIL 2, for chemoselective detection of amine and alcohol gases on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). These detections of gaseous amines and alcohols were achieved by nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions with the electrophilic 1,3,5-triazine-based AIL 1 thin-coated on quartz chips. Starting with inexpensive reagents, bicyclic imidazolium ionic liquids AIL 1 and AIL 2 were readily synthesized in six and four synthetic steps with high isolated yields: 51% and 63%, respectively. The QCM platform developed in this work is readily applicable and highly sensitive to low molecular weight amine gases: for isobutylamine gas (a bacterial volatile) at 10 Hz decrease in resonance frequency (i.e., ΔF = -10 Hz), the detectability using AIL 1 was 6.3 ppb. Our preliminary investigation on detection of the much less nucleophilic alcohol gas by AIL 1 was also promising. To our knowledge, no example to date of reports based on nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions demonstrating sensitive gas detection in these triazine ionic liquids on a QCM has been reported.

Abstract
Successful identification of complex odors by sensor arrays remains a challenging problem. Herein, we report robust, category-specific multiclass-time series classification using an array of 20 carbon nanotube-based chemical sensors. We differentiate between samples of cheese, liquor, and edible oil based on their odor. In a two-stage machine-learning approach, we first obtain an optimal subset of sensors specific to each category and then validate this subset using an independent and expanded data set. We determined the optimal selectors via independent selector classification accuracy, as well as a combinatorial scan of all 4845 possible four selector combinations. We performed sample classification using two models-a k-nearest neighbors model and a random forest model trained on extracted features. This protocol led to high classification accuracy in the independent test sets for five cheese and five liquor samples (accuracies of 91% and 78%, respectively) and only a slightly lower (73%) accuracy on a five edible oil data set.

Abstract
Amine compounds are considered highly important in environmental pollution, industrial, and medicinal fields. The objective of this work was to develop a disposable, highly accurate, highly selective, and low-cost paper-based probe through the combination of color change of seven pH indicators for the detection of amine compounds in the gaseous state. The probe was designed with seven rings which were printed using the wax-printing technique and colored with different pH indicators. The colors of the probe were analyzed using red, green, and blue (RGB) values extracted from the images obtained with a homemade smartphone application. The chemometric tools, principal component analysis, and hierarchical cluster analysis methods were adapted to further classify amine gases. The colorimetric probe showed an excellent capability for detecting the amines with high accuracy, prompt response, and high selectivity. These dye arrays have been proven to detect ethanolamine (NH2CH2CH2OH), dimethylamine ((CH3)2NH), and trimethylamine ((CH3)3N) gases at parts per million scale.
