Abstract
Six-membered heterocycles containing one phosphorus and one nitrogen atom, known as azaphosphinines, have existed in the shadows of their single heteroatom-containing analogues for almost 150 years. Despite this, recent chemistry has seen a rapid increase in publications concerning this uncommon scaffold. Azaphosphinines exist in one of six isomers-there are three possible orientations of the pnictogen atoms and in each of these, the phosphorus is in one of two valences (PIIIvs. PV). This review aims to outline and inform on the synthesis and applications of all six isomers. PV-oxo azaphosphinines are of particular interest to this review as many of the discussed heterocycles either form as the pentavalent species directly or oxidize to this over time. In very recent years the published applications of azaphosphinines have blossomed into subjects spanning several fields of chemistry such as asymmetric catalysis, supramolecular association, cellular imaging, and medicinal chemistry.

Abstract
Several phosphaquinolinone derivatives have been synthesized and characterized to explore their usefulness in the realm of cell imaging. Solution-state photophysical properties in both aqueous and organic solutions were collected for these derivatives. Additionally, CCK-8 cell viability assays and fluorescent imaging in HeLa cells incubated with the new heterocyclic derivatives show evidence of favorable cell permeability, cell viability, and moderate intracellular localization when appended with the well-known morpholine targeting motif.

Abstract
Rigidly planar polycyclic phosphacycles featuring an internal dioxaphosphorane are promising photofunctional materials. However, the lack of efficient synthetic methods resulted in limited structural diversities which significantly hampered extensive study. Herein, we report a straightforward three-component synthesis of novel dioxaphosphorane-fused diphosphacycles with distinctive photophysical properties. Control experiments and theory calculations were performed to account for a plausible reaction mechanism. We also systematically investigated the structure-property relationships of these unprecedented platforms by combining experiments (X-ray analysis, optical and redox properties) and theoretical computations. Based on their unique structure and properties, a novel fluorescent switch for pH sensing was revealed by a dynamic ring-opening/ring-closing process.

Abstract
Enantioenriched phosphorus compounds play crucial roles in many fields ranging from catalyst to materials science to drug development. Despite advances in the construction of phosphacycles, incorporation of a P-chirogenic center into heterocycles remains challenging. Here, we report an effective method for the preparation of phosphacycles through nickel-catalyzed [4+2] heteroannulation of internal alkynes with aminophosphanes derived from o-haloanilines. Notably, chiral 2-λ5-phosphaquinolines can be prepared from P-stereogenic substrates via NH/PH tautomeric equilibrium without loss of stereochemical integrity. The strategy is found to exhibit a broad scope in terms of both reaction components, enabling modular construction of libraries of 2-λ5-phosphaquinolines with different steric and electronic properties for fine-tuning photophysical properties, where some of these compounds showed distinct fluorescence with high quantum yields. A series of mechanistic studies further shed light on the pathway of the heteroannulation and reasons for stereospecificity.

Abstract
The phosphaquinolinone scaffold has been previously studied as a modular core for a variety of fluorescent species where use of substituent effects has focused on increasing or decreasing electron density in the core rings. We now report the synthesis and analysis of several pyridine-containing phosphaquinolinone species exhibiting notable linear conjugation from the aryl-substituent to electron-withdrawing pyridyl nitrogen. Varying the nature of the aryl substituent from electron-withdrawing to electron-donating leads to the generation of an internal charge-transfer (ICT) band in the absorbance spectrum, which becomes the dominant absorbance in terms of intensity in the most electron-rich -NMe2 example. This heterocycle exhibits improved photophysical properties compared to others in the set including high quantum yield and considerably red-shifted emission. The enhanced ICT can be observed in the X-ray data where a rare example of molecule co-planarity is observed. Computational data show increased localization of negative charge on the pyridyl nitrogen as the electron-donating character of the aryl-substituent increases.

Abstract
We report the straightforward one-pot synthesis of novel 5- or 6-membered P-heterocycles featuring an internal ylidic bond: P-containing acenaphthylenes and phenanthrenes. The stability of the compounds tolerates post-functionalization through direct arylation to introduce electron-rich/poor substituents and the synthetic strategy is also compatible with the preparation of more elaborate polyaromatic scaffolds such as acenes and helicenes. Using a joint experimental (X-ray analysis, optical and redox properties) and theoretical approach, we perform a full structure-property relationships study on these new platforms. In particular, we show that molecular engineering allows not only tuning their absorption/emission across the entire visible range but also endowing them with chiroptical or non-linear optical properties, making them valuable dyes for a large panel of photonic or opto-electronic applications.

Abstract
Compared to BN heterocycles, few studies on PN heterocycles have been reported to date. Herein, we developed an efficient synthetic strategy analogous to BN-annulation to simultaneously incorporate a PN bond and a halogen group into the naphthalene core. Subsequently, we prepared PN-containing tetraphenylnaphthalene using this method, followed by palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling and reduction reactions. The prepared molecule was characterized via X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract
The Haley and Johnson labs at the University of Oregon have been collaborating since 2006, combining skillsets in synthetic organic, physical organic, and supramolecular chemistries. This joint project has produced many examples of host molecules that bind anionic guests and give chemical, photophysical, and/or electrical responses. Many of these receptors utilize two-armed arylethynyl backbones that have a variety of hydrogen- or halogen-bonding functional groups appended. However, in attempts to produce a bisamide-containing host using a peptide-coupling protocol with P(OPh)3 present, we isolated something unexpected – a heterocycle containing neighboring P and N atoms. This ‘failed’ reaction turned into a surprisingly robust synthesis of phosphaquinolinones, an unusual class of PN-heterocycles. This Account article tells the rollercoaster story of these heterocycles in our lab. It will highlight our key works to this field, including a suite of fundamental studies of both the original PN-naphthalene moiety, as well as a variety of structural modifications to the arene backbone. It will also discuss the major step forward the project took when we developed a phosphaquinolinone-containing receptor molecule capable of binding HSO4
– selectively, reversibly, and with recyclability. With these findings, the project has gone from hospice care to making a full, robust recovery.1 Introduction2 Initial Discovery3 Setbacks Breathe New Life4 A New Dynamic Duo Develops Dozens of Derivatives5 Physicochemical Characterization5.1 Fluorescence5.2 Molecular Structures5.3 Solution Dimerization Studies6 Applying What We Have Learned6.1 Development of Supramolecular Host6.2 Use of PN Moiety as an Impressive Fluorophore7 Conclusions and Outlook

Abstract
Despite the excellent chemical properties of N-heterocycles, pyrido[1,2-α]azepine remains elusive due to its potential antiaromaticity and lability. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis and characterization of the first bicyclic pyrido[1,2-α]azepine that leverages the coordination to the ruthenium center to promote the stability of N-bridged bicycle.

Abstract
A new, highly adaptable type of phosphinamide‐based hydrogen bonding is representatively demonstrated in π‐conjugated phosphole materials. The rotational flexibility of these intermolecular P=O−H−N hydrogen bonds is demonstrated by X‐ray crystallography and variable‐concentration NMR spectroscopy. In addition to crystalline compounds, phosphinamide hydrogen bonding was successfully introduced into the self‐assembly of soft crystals, liquid crystals, and organogels, thus highlighting the high general value of this type of interaction for the formation of organic soft materials.
