Abstract
Polyhalogenated biaryls are unique motifs offering untapped potential as versatile building blocks for the expedient synthesis of complex biaryl compounds. Overcoming the limitations of conventional syntheses, we introduce a novel, metal-free, operationally simple and one-pot approach to regioselectively (di)halogenate biaryl compounds under mild conditions using cyclic biaryl hypervalent bromine and chlorine substrates as masked arynes. Through chemoselective post-functionalizations, these valuable products can expand the toolbox for synthesizing biaryl-containing scaffolds, addressing a critical gap in the field.

Abstract
Here we unveil a chiral molecular redox switch derived from PDI-based twistacenes─chPDI[2] that has the remarkable attributes of high-intensity and a broadband chiral response. This material exhibits facile, stable, and reversible multistate chiroptical switching behavior over a broad active wavelength range close to 700 nm, encompassing ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared regions. Upon reduction, chPDI[2] exhibits a substantial increase in the amplitude of its circular dichroic response, with an outstanding |ΔΔε| > 300 M-1 cm-1 and a high dissymmetry factor of 3 × 10-2 at 960 nm. DFT calculations suggest that the long wavelength CD signal for doubly reduced chPDI[2] originates from excitation of the PDI backbone to the π* orbital of the bridging alkene. Importantly, the dimer's molecular contortion facilitates ionic diffusion, enabling chiral switching in solid state films. The high dissymmetry factors and near-infrared response establish chPDI[2] as a unique chiroptic switch.

Abstract
The UV-vis and ECD spectroelectrochemistry (SEC) of a chiral binaphthalenylamine derivative of the N-butyl naphthalenediimide (NDIB-NH2) enantiomers were applied to measure UV-vis and ECD spectra of NDIB-NH2 radicals and dianion formed in the reduction and oxidation processes observed in cyclic voltammetry (CV). The CV curves and EPR spectroelectrochemistry enabled us to establish conditions at which a radical-anion [NDIB-NH2]̇.-, a dianion [NDIB-NH2]2-, and a radical-cation [NDIB-NH2]̇.+ are formed. The DFT restricted open-shell CAM-B3LYP-D3/def2TZVP/PCM calculations demonstrated that in the radical-anion [NDIB-NH2]̇.-, spin is spread over the NDI system while in the radical-cation [NDIB-NH2]̇+ it is spread over the aminonaphthalene moiety. The UV-vis spectra of radical-anion and dianion show the most significant changes in the 400-800 nm range. In that range, the ECD spectra varied with the change of electrode potential more than the UV-vis did and enabled the identification of a new ECD band of [NDIB-NH2]̇.- at ca. 400 nm hidden in the background in the UV spectra at -1000 mV. A broad structured ECD pattern with a maximum at ca. 530 nm was observed for [NDIB-NH2]̇.- (-1000 mV), while a single smooth ECD band of [NDIB-NH2]2- was located at 520 nm (-1750 mV). For the first time, an isosbestic point (455 nm) was found in ECD spectroelectrochemical measurements for the radical-cation [NDIB-NH2]̇.+ in equilibrium with the NDIB-NH2 neutral form. The TD-DFT CAM-B3LYP-D3/6-31G** calculations combined with the hybrid (explicit combined with implicit) solvation model fairly well reproduced the UV-vis and ECD SEC of neutral and redox forms of NDIB-NH2 but the ECD spectrum of [NDIB-NH2]̇.+ above 390 nm.

Abstract
Flexible circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) switching devices have been long-awaited due to their promising potential application in wearable optoelectronic devices. However, on account of the few materials and complicated design of manufacturing systems, how to fabricate a flexible electric-field-driven CPL-switching device is still a serious challenge. Herein, a flexible device with multiple optical switching properties (CPL, circular dichroism (CD), fluorescence, color) is designed and prepared efficiently based on proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism by optimizing the chiral structure of switching molecule. More importantly, this device can maintain the switching performance even after 300 bending-unbending cycles. It has a remarkable comprehensive performance containing bistable property, low open voltage, and good cycling stability. Then, prototype devices with designed patterns have been fabricated, which opens a new application pattern of CPL-switching materials.

Abstract
The electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectroscopy is probably the most important chiraloptical method, and the role of chirality in contemporary chemistry, pharmacy, and material science constantly increases. On the other hand, the electrochemical methods are also very sensitive tools for studying multivarious redox processes. Nevertheless, the first ECD spectroelectrochemical (SEC) study was only published by Daub, Salbeck and Aurbach in 1988, and since then, the ECD SEC method has been mentioned in only thirty papers. By the summer of 2020, the ECD SEC studies were mainly focused around molecular systems for organic, and marginally, inorganic chiroptical switching studies of biochemical redox reactions. The review provides more details about the ECD SEC studies carried out so far. At the end, we suggest some future applications for the ECD spectroelectrochemistry.

Abstract
A new and simple strategy towards electric-field-driven multiple chirality switching device has been designed and fabricated by combining a newly synthesized base-responsive chiroptical polymer switch (R-FLMA) and p-benzoquinone (p-BQ) via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism. Clear and stable triple chirality states (silence, positive, negative) of this device in visible band can be regulated reversibly (>1000 cycles) by adjusting voltage programs. Furthermore, such chiral switching phenomena are also accompanied by apparent changes of color and fluorescence. More importantly, the potential application of this device for a spatial light modulator has also been demonstrated.

Abstract
A perfluorobiphenyl-2,2'-diyl dication and its corresponding dihydrophenanthrene-type electron donor are interconvertible upon two-electron transfer. Redox-triggered C-C bond-formation/cleavage caused a drastic change in the torsion angle of the biphenyl unit. Thus, π-delocalization ON/OFF switching was observed as a change in the UV absorption upon electrolysis of the linearly extended analogue with two phenylethynyl groups. A further extended π-system with a molecular length of ca. 3.5 nm, which has two switching units, was synthesized. Spectroelectrograms as well as voltammetric analyses showed that the two units act nearly simultaneously because of the very small inter-unit electrostatic repulsion in the tetracationic state. Thus, the present pair is a promising candidate as a switching unit for "molecular wires" with controllable π-delocalization, in which a higher ON/OFF ratio of delocalization could be realized by incorporating multiple switching units.

Abstract
Biphenyl-2,2'-diylbis(10-methyl-9-methyleneacridan)-type electron donor 1, which has two tethered cyclic disulfide units at the 6,6'-positions, was designed and synthesized as the first member of a dynamic redox (dyrex) system that can form molecular layers on a Au(111) electrode. Upon the two-electron (2 e) oxidation of 1, the persistent dicationic dye 22+ was generated with the formation of a new C-C bond, which is reversibly cleaved upon 2 e reduction to regenerate 1 (dyrex behavior). Similar dyrex interconversion occurs in the molecular layer of 1 on gold. The chemical identities of 1/Au and electrochemically generated 22+ /Au were unambiguously determined by in situ IR spectroscopy in the attenuated total reflection mode. In situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was conducted under electrochemical conditions to examine the surface structure of 1 adsorbed on a Au(111) electrode. Although no long-range-ordered morphology was found in the STM image of 1, an in situ STM study of the potential-induced dyrex reaction of 1 to 22+ showed that the grained spots in the image became slightly brighter.

Abstract
2,5-Bis(diarylethenyl)thiophenes (1) and their bithiophene (2) and terthiophene (3) homologues were designed as a new series of violene/cyanine-hybrid-type electrochromic materials. Alkoxyphenyl and dialkylaminophenyl groups are used as the aryl group in the cyanine parts of 1/2/3O and 1/2/3N, respectively, which emit fluorescence in the neutral state but not in the oxidized state. Voltammetric analyses of 18 newly prepared electron donors show that they all undergo two reversible one-electron oxidations. Redox potentials, UV–vis spectral features, and fluorescence quantum yields are important parameters for characterizing the present electrochromic behavior with a fluorescence response, and can be finely tuned by changing aryl groups in the cyanine part, the number of thiophene rings in the violene part, and the alkyl-chain length of the alkoxyphenyl or diaklylaminophenyl groups (R = CH3, C8H17, C16H33), which makes this a versatile platform for the design of novel electrochromic materials.
