Solvent-Assisted Control of Metal-Organic Nanotube Size and Morphology

While intensive studies have focused on the synthesis and characterization of new metal-organic nanotube (MONT) structures, the lack of size and morphology control remains an obstacle in broadening applications for this class of materials. Herein, we demonstrate control of MONT crystallite size and morphology by tuning polarity and the protic/aprotic nature of solvents, including dimethylformamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, ethanol, and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, for the isostructural syntheses of two MONTs. Through a combination of transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and selected area electron diffraction, we find that MONT crystallite sizes can be tuned while maintaining control over the relative dispersity without significantly altering the underlying crystal structure.

A Three-Dimensionally Extended Metal-Organic Ladder Compound Exhibiting Proton Conduction

Ladder systems situated in the dimensional crossover region have attracted much attention because their electronic states and physical properties depend strongly on the electronic correlations among the constituent legs. Generally, two-/three-legged transition metal-oxide ladder compounds are studied as representative ladder systems, but two-/three-dimensional (2D/3D) extensions based on such ladder systems with a few numbers of legs are difficult because of the extreme synthesis conditions. Here, for the first time, we report the successful creation of a 3D extended two-legged ladder compound, [Pt(en)(dpye)I]2(NO3)4 ⋅ 2H2O (en=ethylenediamine; dpye=1,2-Di(4-pyridyl)ethane), which is obtained by simple oxidative polymerization of a small Pt macrocyclic complex using elemental I2. The unique 3D extended lattice consists of 1D mixed-valence halogen-bridged metal chains (⋅⋅⋅Pt-I-Pt-I⋅⋅⋅) and helically arranged macrocyclic units as the constituent legs and rungs, as confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Diffuse X-ray scattering analyses and optical measurements revealed that the out-of-phase mixed-valence Pt2+/Pt4+ arrangement arises from the weak interchain correlation among adjacent legs. In addition, this compound shows an increase in proton conductivity by a factor of up to 1000, depending on humidity.

Dual-quenching mechanisms in electrochemiluminescence immunoassay based on zinc-based MOFs of ruthenium hybrid for D-dimer detection

The successful application of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) in immunoassay for clinical diagnosis requires improving sensitivity and accuracy. Herein was reported an ECL analytical model based zinc-based metal-organic frameworks of ruthenium hybrid (RuZn MOFs) as the signal emitter. To enlarge the output difference, the quenching effect of three different noble metal nanoparticles included palladium seeds (Pd_seeds), palladium octahedrons (Pd_oct), and Pt-based palladium (Pd@Pt_oct) core-shell were researched. Among them, Pd@Pt_oct core-shell possessed higher activity and improved durability than Pd-only (NPs), they could load more protein macromolecules amicably and stabilized in the analysis system. Furthermore, since the charge redistribution owing to the hybridization of the Pt and Pd atoms in Pd@Pt_oct, it could generate the electron flow maximumly from the emitter RuZn MOFs to Pd@Pt_oct and result in the enhancement of quenching ECL. And the UV absorption of noble metal nanoparticles overlapped with the ECL emission of RuZn MOFs to varying degrees, which caused the behavior of resonance energy transfer (RET) reaction at the same time. This would greatly promote the sensitivity of this ECL system compared with the traditional single quenching mechanism. Based on this, a signal-off immunsensor was constructed to sensitive detection of D-dimer with linearity range from 0.001 to 200 ng mL^-1, limit of detection (LOD) was 0.20 pg mL^-1 and provide a further theoretical basis for the clinical application of ECL technology.

Self-Assembled Crystalline Bundles in Soluble Metal-Organic Nanotubes

The use of nanotubes in the solution state is crucial not only for the exploration of physical and chemical behaviors at the molecular level but also for application such as thin-film fabrication. Surface modification is generally used to solubilize carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and various synthetic nanotubes; however, this method may affect the surface properties of the original nanotubes, and the detailed crystal structure obtained after modification is unclear. Here, we report the synthesis of a crystalline and soluble metal-organic nanotube consisting of a cationic tubular framework and an anion with a long alkyl chain. The nanotubular structures are formed not only in the solid state but also in the solution state, as confirmed by an X-ray structural analysis, optical measurements, and electron microscopy studies. This nanotube system is realized in different states without any surface modification, which is quite different from typical CNTs and synthetic nanotubes. In addition, self-assembled crystalline bundles are directly observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for the first time in a metal-organic nanotube system. The bundle structures are also confirmed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations of thin nanotube films. We envisage a systematic design of such soluble metal-organic nanotubes that will enable direct observation of mass transport behavior in channels of bundles or a single nanotube, as well as a wide range of thin-film applications.

f-block MOFs: A Pathway to Heterometallic Transuranics

A novel series of heterometallic f-block-frameworks including the first examples of transuranic heterometallic ²³⁸ U/²³⁹ Pu-metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and a novel monometallic ²³⁹ Pu-analog are reported. In combination with theoretical calculations, we probed the kinetics and thermodynamics of heterometallic actinide(An)-MOF formation and reported the first value of a U-to-Th transmetallation rate. We concluded that formation of uranyl species could be a driving force for solid-state metathesis. Density of states near the Fermi edge, enthalpy of formation, band gap, proton affinity, and thermal/chemical stability were probed as a function of metal ratios. Furthermore, we achieved 97 % of the theoretical maximum capacity for An-integration. These studies shed light on fundamental aspects of actinide chemistry and also foreshadow avenues for the development of emerging classes of An-containing materials, including radioisotope thermoelectric generators or metalloradiopharmaceuticals.

Statistical copolymer metal organic nanotubes

Metal-organic nanotubes (MONTs) are 1-dimensional crystalline porous materials that are formed from ligands and metals in a manner identical to more typical 3-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). MONTs form anisotropically in one dimension making them excellent candidates for linker engineering for control of chemical composition and spacing. A novel series of MONTs was synthesized utilizing a mixture of 1,2,4-ditriazole ligands containing both a fully protonated aryl moiety and its tetrafluorinated analog in ratios of, 0 : 1, 1 : 4, 1 : 1, 4 : 1, and 1 : 0, respectively. All MONTs were characterized by both bulk and nanoscale measurements, including SCXRD, PXRD, ssNMR and TEM, to determine the resulting co-polymer architecture (alternating, block, or statistical) and the ligand ratios in the solid materials. All characterization methods point towards statistical copolymerization of the materials in a manner analogous to 3D MOFs, all of which notably could be achieved without destructive analytical methods.

Ultrastable Polyoxometalate-Encapsulated Supramolecular Metal-Organic Nanotubes for Single-Crystal Proton Conduction

Two unique polyoxometalate (POM)-encapsulated tubular materials with the formula K(H₂O)₆[M₆(btp)₆(H₂O)₂₂](P₂W₁₈O₆₂)₃(Hbtp)₅(btp)₃·52H₂O [M = Mn (1) and Co (2); btp = 2,6-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)pyridine] were designed and synthesized based on the Dawson POM and V-type btp ligand, as confirmed by IR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and element analysis. Single-crystal XRD analyses of compound 1 show that two kinds of remarkable metal-organic supramolecular nanotubes, including trigonal and hexagonal nanotubes, are constructed along the c-axis direction via π···π-packing interactions between {Mn₃(btp)₃} rings and the btp ligands, of which [α-P₂W₁₈O₆₂]^6- anions are confined in channels, making the entire structure extraordinarily stable. Meanwhile, the coordinated [α-P₂W₁₈O₆₂]^6- anion within the hexagonal channel makes the channel highly hydrophilic and attracts a number of guest water molecules to fill in the free space, conducive to proton transport. Therefore, the single-crystal sample of 1 exhibits a high proton conductivity of 6.39 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 along one-dimensional channels, 30 times higher than that of a pellet sample at 358 K and 98% relative humidity.

Interdigitated Pt-Br chains with π-stacking: an approach toward Robin-Day class I mixed valency in MX-chain complexes

The first interdigitated MX-type chain complex with infinite π-stacked arrays was synthesized. The synchronization between a Pt-Br⋯ chain and π-stacking periodicities led to the longest M-X-M distance (6.6978(15) Å) and nil or negligible intervalence charge transfer, which is essential to realize the Robin-Day class I mixed valence state in MX chains.

Anhydrous Proton Conduction in Crystalline Porous Materials with a Wide Working Temperature Range

Crystalline porous materials (CPMs), exhibiting high surface areas, versatile structural topologies, and tunable functionality, have attracted much attention in the field of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) for their great potential in solid electrolytes. However, most hydrated CPM proton conductors suffer from the narrow working temperature and the high water/humidity dependence. Considering the practical application in different working environments, CPMs with high anhydrous conductivity from subzero to moderate temperature (>100 °C) are desirable, but it is still a huge challenge. Herein we summarized our recent research work in the anhydrous CPM proton conductors, including to rationally tune the structures of CPMs by using the strategies of pore engineering and protonic species control to achieve wide working temperature conduction, as well as to clarify the conducting mechanism. This spotlight will provide clues to flexibly design and fabricate wide-working-temperature CPM conductors with high protonic conductivity.

Control of Proton-Conductive Behavior with Nanoenvironment within Metal-Organic Materials

Solid-state proton-conductive materials have been of great interest for several decades due to their promising application as electrolytes in fuel cells and electrochemical devices. Metal-organic materials (MOMs) have recently been intensively investigated as a new type of proton-conductive materials. The highly crystalline nature and structural designability of MOMs make them advantageous over conventional noncrystalline proton-conductive materials-the detailed investigation of the structure-property relationship is feasible on MOM-based proton conductors. This review aims to summarize and examine the fundamental principles and various design strategies on proton-conductive MOMs, and shed light on the nanoconfinement effects as well as the importance of hydrophobicity on specific occasions, which have been often disregarded. Besides, challenges and future prospects on this field are presented.

A square-shaped complex with an electron-acceptor ligand: unique cubic crystal symmetry and similarity to the inorganic mineral katoite

We successfully obtained a Pt square complex having an electron-accepting ligand, which shows a strong similarity to the high-pressure phase of the natural mineral katoite in the solid state.

A mixed-valent metal-organic ladder linked by pyrazine

We report the synthesis, characterization, and electronic state of a novel mixed-valent metal-organic ladder (MOL) linked by pyrazine (pz). Single-crystal x-ray studies revealed that the MOL has a two-legged ladder-shaped framework, which is composed of a pz-connected Pt dimer with bridging Br ions. The electronic state of the MOL was investigated using x-ray and spectroscopic techniques; the MOL was found to have an electronic state that corresponds to the mixed-valence state of Pt^IIand Pt^IV. Furthermore, the intervalence charge transfer energy of the MOL has lower than that expected from the tendency of a similar halogen-bridged mixed-valence MOL owing to its unique 'zig-zag'-shaped legs. These results provide a new insight into the physical and electronic properties of MOL systems.

Metal-organic tube or layered assembly: reversible sheet-to-tube transformation and adaptive recognition

Rational preparation of an adaptive cavity-like enzyme is a great challenge for chemists. Herein, a new self-assembly strategy for the rational preparation of metal-organic tubes with nano-channels has been developed; both 1D metal-organic tube and corresponding 2D layered assemblies can be selectively synthesized driven by different templates; reversible sheet-to-tube transformation can be realized and the key intermediate has been identified. Furthermore, the newly formed nano-channel displays excellent polarity-selectivity for encapsulation of guest molecules, and can be further expanded or contracted through guest-driven adaptive deformation; even induced by very similar guest molecules, the adaptive deformations can also be obviously distinguished. Finally, the key chemicals benzene/hexane with a similar size can also be effectively separated by such nano-channels in the liquid phase. Our work not only provides a new synthetic strategy for the rational synthesis of metal-organic tubes with a reversible sheet-to-tube transformation character, but also gives a potential method for the construction of adaptive host-like enzymes and an in-depth understanding of the nature of adaptive host and guest molecules.

Semiconducting crystalline inorganic-organic hybrid metal halide nanochains

One-dimensional (1D) inorganic-organic metal halide hybrids at the molecular level, which can be considered as arrays of nanochains isolated by organic components, have shown remarkable optical and electric properties. This review summarizes their reported structural types and shows how to modify their band gaps and optical and electric properties.

Confined water-mediated high proton conduction in hydrophobic channel of a synthetic nanotube

Water confined within one-dimensional (1D) hydrophobic nanochannels has attracted significant interest due to its unusual structure and dynamic properties. As a representative system, water-filled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are generally studied, but direct observation of the crystal structure and proton transport is difficult for CNTs due to their poor crystallinity and high electron conduction. Here, we report the direct observation of a unique water-cluster structure and high proton conduction realized in a metal-organic nanotube, [Pt(dach)(bpy)Br]₄(SO₄)₄·32H₂O (dach: (1R, 2R)-(–)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane; bpy: 4,4’-bipyridine). In the crystalline state, a hydrogen-bonded ice nanotube composed of water tetramers and octamers is found within the hydrophobic nanochannel. Single-crystal impedance measurements along the channel direction reveal a high proton conduction of 10⁻² Scm⁻¹. Moreover, fast proton diffusion and continuous liquid-to-solid transition are confirmed using solid-state ¹H-NMR measurements. Our study provides valuable insight into the structural and dynamical properties of confined water within 1D hydrophobic nanochannels.

Water confined in natural or synthetic hydrophobic nano-spaces behaves differently than in the bulk. Here the authors investigate water in hydrophobic synthetic 1D nanochannels revealing water clustering in tetramers and octamers and high proton conductivity, along with a continuous liquid to solid transition.

Conductive zigzag Pd(iii)–Br chain complex realized by a multiple-hydrogen-bond approach

Coexistence of zigzag structure and the uncommon Pd(iii) oxidation state in quasi-1D halogen-bridged metal complexes was realized in a conductive Br-bridged Pd chain complex, [Pd(dabdOH)₂Br]SO₄·3H₂O (2), for the first time.

MX-type single chain complexes with an aromatic in-plane ligand: incorporation of aromatic interactions for stabilizing the chain structure

MX-type one-dimensional complexes [Pt^IV(amp)₂Br₂][Pt^II/IV(amp)₂Br]₂(HSO₄)₂(SO₄)₂·13H₂O (3) and [Pt^IV(amp)₂Br₂][Pt^II/IV(amp)₂Br]₂(H₂PO₄)₆·8H₂O (4) were synthesized as the first analogue containing only an aromatic in-plane ligand. The Pt-Br chain structures of 3 and 4 are stabilized by both the hydrogen-bond network along the chain and the π-stacking via intercalated Pt(iv) complexes. Structural and spectroscopic studies indicated that both 3 and 4 form the Pt(ii/iv) mixed valence state.

Homochiral iron(ii)-based metal-organic nanotubes: metamagnetism and selective nitric oxide adsorption in a confined channel

Homochiral iron(ii)-based nanotubular metal phosphonates (R)- and (S)-[Fe(pemp)(H2O)2] [pemp2- = (R)- or (S)-(1-phenylethylamino)methylphosphonate] are reported showing metamagnetism at low temperature. The dehydrated product features coordinatively unsaturated and redox-active metal ion sites that enable it to strongly bind nitric oxide at room temperature.

Modular Cavities: Induced Fit of Polar and Apolar Guests into Halogen-Based Receptors

Neutral triangular macrocyclic compounds, [PdX₂(4,7-phen)]₃·(DMF)₃·Et₂O (X = Cl, Br; 4,7-phen = 4,7-phenanthroline; DMF = N, N'-dimethylformamide; Et₂O = diethyl ether), were synthesized, and their molecular structures were characterized. Solution-state ¹H NMR results suggested the formation of metal-ligand bonds, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography revealed clear triangular structures. A detailed examination of the structures indicated the formation of two kinds of cavities in the solid state, where a triangular unit works as a halogen-based receptor for polar and apolar solvents through weak hydrogen-bonding and dipole-dipole interaction.

Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Cyanometallates: Luminescent Blocks for Coordination Self-Assembly

A family of cyanide-bridged heterometallic aggregates has been constructed of the chromophoric cycloplatinated metalloligands and coordinatively unsaturated d¹⁰ fragments {M(PPh₃)_n}. The tetranuclear complexes of general composition [Pt(C^N)(CN)₂M(PPh₃)₂]₂ [C^N = ppy, M = Cu (1), Ag (2); C^N = tolpy (Htolpy = 2-(4-tolyl)-pyridine), M = Cu (4), Ag (5); C^N = F₂ppy (HF₂ppy = 2-(4, 6-difluorophenyl)-pyridine), M = Cu (7), Ag (8)] demonstrate a squarelike arrangement of the molecular frameworks, which is achieved due to favorable coordination geometries of the bridging ligands and the metal ions. Variation of the amount of the ancillary phosphine (for M = Ag) afforded compounds [Pt(C^N)(CN)₂Ag(PPh₃)]₂ (C^N = ppy, 3; C^N = tolpy, 6); for the latter one an alternative cluster topology, stabilized by the Pt-Ag metallophilic and η¹-C_ipso(C^N)-Ag bonding, was observed. The solid-state structures of all of the title species 1-8 were determined crystallographically. The complexes exhibit moderately strong room-temperature phosphorescence as crystalline powders (Φ_em = 16-34%, λ_em = 470-511 nm). The luminescence studies and time-dependent density functional theory computational analysis indicate that the photophysical behavior is dominated by the ³π-π* electronic transitions localized on the cyclometalated fragment and mixed with M_PtLCT contribution, while the d¹⁰-phosphine motifs have a negligible contribution into the frontier orbitals and therefore show a little influence on the emission performance of the described compounds.

Mixed-Valence Nickel Bis(azamacrocycle) Compounds with Ghost-Leg-type Sheets

The fabrication of so-called ghost-leg sheets and their electronic properties is reported. This unique sheet structure is composed of one-dimensional mixed-valence nickel chains, which are linked with one another by bis(azamacrocycle) ligands. They are also topologically unique Ni^II /Ni^III mixed-valence complexes, as confirmed by X-ray and optical measurements. Moreover, their magnetic susceptibilities indicated two-dimensional antiferromagnetic behavior following the Fisher 1D chain model with interchain interactions, where spins on Ni^III sites mutually interact antiferromagnetically in the sheets.

Guest-Induced Two-Way Structural Transformation in a Layered Metal-Organic Framework Thin Film

Fabrication of thin films made of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been intensively pursued for practical applications that use the structural response of MOFs. However, to date, only physisorption-induced structural response has been studied in these films. Chemisorption can be expected to provide a remarkable structural response because of the formation of bonds between guest molecules and reactive metal sites in host MOFs. Here, we report that chemisorption-induced two-way structural transformation in a nanometer-sized MOF thin film. We prepared a two-dimensional layered-type MOF Fe[Pt(CN)₄] thin film using a step-by-step approach. Although the as-synthesized film showed poor crystallinity, the dehydrated form of this thin film had a highly oriented crystalline nature (Film-D) as confirmed by synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD). Surprisingly, under water and pyridine vapors, Film-D showed chemisorption-induced dynamic structural transformations to Fe(L)₂[Pt(CN)₄] thin films [L = H₂O (Film-H), pyridine (Film-P)], where water and pyridine coordinated to the open Fe²⁺ site. Dynamic structural transformations were also confirmed by in situ XRD, sorption measurement, and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. This is the first report of chemisorption-induced dynamic structural response in a MOF thin film, and it provides useful insights, which would lead to future practical applications of MOFs utilizing chemisorption-induced structural responses.
