Influences of Ligand Backbone Substituents on Phosphinecarbonylpalladium and -nickel Catalysts for Ethylene Polymerization and Copolymerization with Polar Monomers

A series of phosphinecarbonylpalladium and -nickel catalysts bearing various substituents on the ligand backbone were prepared, characterized, and used in ethylene polymerization and copolymerization with polar monomers. The Pd and Ni catalysts can achieve high activities as well as high polymer molecular weights in both ethylene polymerization and copolymerization with polar monomers. The electron-donating group from the carbonyl side can effectively increase the polymer molecular weights. Utilization of a cyclic backbone structure can increase the catalytic activities at the expense of the polymer molecular weights. Moreover, installation of a pyridyl moiety in the ligand backbone can enable Lewis acid responsiveness and can enhance the polymerization activities. These results suggest the importance of the ligand backbone for the properties of catalysts in ethylene polymerization and copolymerization reactions.

Compounded Sequence Control in Polymerization of One-Pot Mixtures of Highly Reactive Acrylates by Differentiating Lewis Pairs

The ability to synthesize well-defined block copolymers (BCPs) from one-pot comonomer mixtures has powerful chemical and practical implications. However, controlling sequences between highly reactive, homologous comonomers such as acrylates during polymerization is challenging. Here we present a Lewis pair polymerization strategy that uniquely utilizes preferential Lewis acid coordination to differentiate between comonomers, distinctive kinetics, and compounded thermodynamic and kinetic differentiation to precisely control sequences and suppress tapering and misincorporation errors, thus achieving well-defined and resolved di- or tri-BCPs of acrylates.

Chain Transfer to Toluene in Styrene Coordination Polymerization

The chain-transfer reaction is rather important in coordination polymerization regarding catalytic efficiency, adjustment of molecular weight, and control of chain structure. To date, chain transfer to H₂ and Al, Mg, and Zn alkyl compounds and β-H elimination are the commonly encountered modes. Now a novel chain transfer to toluene is reported. By introducing fluorine atoms into the β-diketimine ligands, an inert catalytic system for styrene (St) coordination polymerization was transferred into the highly active one. The activity increased with an increase in the number of fluorines in the ligands. Surprisingly, the molecular weights of resultant polystyrenes are very low (M_n =2000-6600 Da) despite of St loadings, corresponding up to 121 chains per active species. The mechanisms were investigated by DFT simulation, MALDI-TOF MS, isotope tracing experiment and 2D NMR spectrum analyses, which revealed that the fluorine activated the polymerization and directed chain transfer to toluene.

Biased Lewis Pairs: A General Catalytic Approach to Ether-Ester Block Copolymers with Unlimited Ordering of Sequences

Polymerizing epoxides after cyclic esters remains a major challenge, though their block copolymers have been extensively studied and used for decades. Reported here is a simple catalytic approach based on a metal-free Lewis pair that addresses the challenge. When the Lewis acid is used in excess of a base, selective (transesterification-free) polymerization of epoxides occurs in the presence of esters, while selectivity toward cyclic esters is achieved by an oppositely biased catalyst. Hence, one-pot block copolymerization can be performed in both ester-first and ether-first orders with selectivity being switchable at any stage, yielding ether-ester-type block copolymers with unlimited ordering of sequences as well as widely variable compositions and architectures. The selectivity can also be switched back and forth several times to generate a multiblock copolymer. Experimental and calculational results indicate that the selectivity originates mainly from the state of catalyst-activated hydroxy species.

Unprecedentedly High Activity and/or High Regio-/Stereoselectivity of Fluorenyl-Based CGC Allyl-Type η3:η1-tert-Butyl(dimethylfluorenylsilyl)amido Ligated Rare Earth Metal Monoalkyl Complexes in Olefin Polymerization

A series of fluorenyl-based constrained-geometry-configuration (CGC) allyl-type rare earth metal monoalkyl complexes bearing the divalent anionic η3:η1-tert-butyl(dimethylfluorenylsilyl)amido (η3:η1-FluSiMe2NtBu) ligand (η3:η1-FluSiMe2NtBu)Ln(CH2SiMe3)(THF)2 (1-3) have been synthesized via the alkane elimination reaction between the FluHSiMe2NHtBu ligand and rare earth metal tri(trimethylsilylmethyl) complexes Ln(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)n. Their structures are characterized by means of NMR spectrum, elemental analyses, and X-ray diffraction. These complexes 1-3 are isostructural and isomorphous, and each of them adopts a distorted-trigonal-bipyramidal configuration containing one η3:η1-FluSiMe2NtBu ligand, one CH2SiMe3 ligand, and two THF molecules. Unlike traditional CGC allyl-type rare earth metal complexes showing no or low activity and regio-/stereoselectivity in styrene or MMA polymerization, these complexes 1-3 exhibit high catalytic activities and/or high regio-/stereoselectivities in the cis-1,4-polymerization of isoprene and myrcene or in the syndiotactic polymerization of styrene under the aid of different activators (borate or borane) and AlR3. The in situ 1H NMR spectra suggest that the exchanges of chelating ligands such as alkyl groups and divalent anionic η3:η1-FluSiMe2NtBu ligands between rare earth metal centers and Al centers result in the formation of a heterobimetallic tetraalkylaluminate complex R2Al(μ-R)2Ln(R)(μ-R)2AlR2, which is activated by activators to form a divalent cationic species [Ln(μ-R)2AlR2]2+ as a catalytically active species in the coordination-insertion polymerization of olefins.

Coordination-Responsive Longitudinal Relaxation Tuning as a Versatile MRI Sensing Protocol for Malignancy Targets

Biomarkers (e.g., acidity, H2O2, hypoxia, and specific molecules) as one primary component of tumor microenvironments are closely associated with occurrence, invasion, and metastasis of malignancy, thus can act as biological targets. However, their monitoring remains a challenging task. Herein, a coordination-dependent longitudinal relaxation tuning (CLRT) that occurs between a Mn2+ "donor" and a Mn2+ "acceptor" is established to enable biological target sensing. Relying on the differences of coordination ability and spatial structure between donors and acceptors, the biological targets as Mn2+ acceptor can take Mn2+ away from the donors (i.e., modified ligands) in nanoscale probes, which consequently varies T1-weighted (T1W) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal. The coordination ability and spatial structure of the modified Mn2+ "donor" and the pore diameter of donor carrier are demonstrated to determine the feasibility, specificity, and generality of CLRT. With CLRT, this MRI-based ruler is demonstrated for the successful specific detection of biological targets (i.e., hyaluronic acid and glutathione) of malignancy, and its potential in quantitative measurement of hyaluronic acid is further demonstrated. CLRT can serve as a novel and general sensing principle to augment the exploration of a wide range of biological systems.

Synthesis of polymers with on-demand sequence structures via dually switchable and interconvertible polymerizations

The synthesis of polymers with on-demand sequence structures is very important not only for academic researchers but also for industry. However, despite the existing polymerization techniques, it is still difficult to achieve copolymer chains with on-demand sequence structures. Here we report a dually switchable and controlled interconvertible polymerization system; in this system, two distinct orthogonal polymerizations can be selectively switched ON/OFF independent of each other and they can be interconverted promptly and quantitatively according to external stimuli. Thus, the external stimuli can manipulate the insertion of distinct monomers into the resulting copolymer chains temporally, spatially, and orthogonally, allowing the on-demand precise arrangement of sequence structures in the resulting polymers. This dually switchable and interconvertible polymerization system provides a powerful tool for synthesizing materials that are not accessible by other polymerization methods.
