General, Highly Selective Synthesis of 1,3- and 1,4-Difunctionalized Building Blocks by Regiodivergent Epoxide Opening

Stereoconvergent Approach to the Enantioselective Construction of α-Quaternary Alcohols by Radical Epoxide Allylation

We describe a highly stereoconvergent radical epoxide allylation towards diastereomerically and enantiomerically enriched α-quaternary alcohols in two steps from olefins. Our approach combines the stereospecifity and enantioselectivity of the Shi epoxidation with the unprecedented Ti(III)-promoted intramolecular radical group transfer allylation of epoxides. A directional isomerization step via configurationally labile radical intermediates enables the selective preparation of all-carbon quaternary stereocenters in a unique fashion.

Iron(II) Phthalocyanine-Catalyzed Homodimerization and Tandem Diamination of Diazo Compounds with Primary Amines: Access to Construct Substituted 2,3-Diaminosuccinonitriles in One-Pot

We herein first report the homodimerization and tandem diamination of diazo compounds with primary amines catalyzed by the iron(II) phthalocyanine (PcFe(II)), which can construct one C-C bond and two C-N bonds within 20 min in one-pot. Compared to the traditional metal-catalyzed N-H insertion reaction between amines with diazo reagents, the developed reaction almost does not generate the N-H insertion product, but the homodimerization/tandem diamination product. The proposed mechanism studies indicate that primary amines play a crucial role in the homocoupling of diazo compounds via dimerization of iron(III)-acetonitrile radical generated from the reaction between diazoacetonitrile with PcFe(II) coordinated by bis(amines); the β-hydride elimination is involved, and then, the attack of primary amines toward the carbon atoms on the formed C-C bond is followed. Moreover, this novel reaction can be used to effectively prepare substituted 2,3-diaminosuccinonitriles with high yields and even up to >99:1 d.r., encouragingly these products contain both 1,2-diamines and succinonitrile motifs, which are two classes of important organic compounds with significant applications in many yields. This reaction is also suitable for the gram-scale preparation of 2,3-bis(phenylamino)succinonitrile (2a) with a yield of 84%. Therefore, the developed reaction represents a new type of transformation.

Dinuclear Titanium(III)-Catalyzed Radical-Type Kinetic Resolution of Epoxides for the Enantioselective Synthesis of cis-Glycidic Esters

Glycidic esters represent pivotal constituents in synthetic chemistry, offering enhanced versatility for tailoring toward a diverse array of molecular targets in comparison with simple epoxides. While considerable progress has been made in the asymmetric synthesis of trans- and trisubstituted glycidic esters, achieving enantioselective preparation of cis-glycidic esters has remained a long-standing challenge. Here, we demonstrate a selectivity-predictable modular platform for the asymmetric synthesis of cis-glycidic esters via a novel dinuclear (salen)titanium(III)-catalyzed radical-type kinetic resolution (KR) approach. This radical KR protocol operates under mild conditions and demonstrates a wide substrate scope, facilitating the synthesis of alkyl- and aryl-substituted cis-glycidic esters with high levels of regioselectivity and enantioselectivity, along with hydroxy ester byproducts representing synthetically valuable motifs as well. This study presents a unique exploration of radical-type KR applied to epoxides, effectively overcoming the steric challenges inherent in conventional nucleophilic-type methodologies typically employed in epoxide chemistry.

A Chiral Titanocene Complex as Regiodivergent Photoredox Catalyst: Synthetic Scope and Mechanism of Catalyst Generation

We describe a combined synthetic, spectroscopic, and computational study of a chiral titanocene complex as a regiodivergent photoredox catalyst (PRC). With Kagan's complex catCl2 either monoprotected 1,3-diols or 1,4-diols can be obtained in high selectivity from a common epoxide substrate in a regiodivergent epoxide opening depending on which enantiomer of the catalyst is employed. Due to the catalyst-controlled regioselectivity of ring opening and the broader substrate scope, the PRC with catCl2 is also a highly attractive branching point for diversity-oriented synthesis. The photochemical processes of cat(NCS)2, a suitable model for catCl2, were probed by time-correlated single-photon counting. The photoexcited complex displays a thermally activated delayed fluorescence as a result of a singlet-triplet equilibration, S1 ⇄ T1, via intersystem crossing and recrossing. Its triplet state is quenched by electron transfer to the T1 state. Computational and cyclic voltammetry studies highlight the importance of our sulfonamide additive. By bonding to sulfonamide additives, chloride abstraction from [catCl2]- is facilitated, and catalyst deactivation by coordination of the sulfonamide group is circumvented.

Iron(III)-based metalloradical catalysis for asymmetric cyclopropanation via a stepwise radical mechanism

Metalloradical catalysis (MRC) exploits the metal-centred radicals present in open-shell metal complexes as one-electron catalysts for the generation of metal-stabilized organic radicals-key intermediates that control subsequent one-electron homolytic reactions. Cobalt(II) complexes of porphyrins, as stable 15e-metalloradicals with a well-defined low-spin d7 configuration, have dominated the ongoing development of MRC. Here, to broaden MRC beyond the use of Co(II)-based metalloradical catalysts, we describe systematic studies that establish the operation of Fe(III)-based MRC and demonstrate an initial application for asymmetric radical transformations. Specifically, we report that five-coordinate iron(III) complexes of porphyrins with an axial ligand, which represent another family of stable 15e-metalloradicals with a d5 configuration, are potent metalloradical catalysts for olefin cyclopropanation with different classes of diazo compounds via a stepwise radical mechanism. This work lays a foundation and mechanistic blueprint for future exploration of Fe(III)-based MRC towards the discovery of diverse stereoselective radical reactions.

Formal Anti-Markovnikov Addition of Water to Olefins by Titanocene-Catalyzed Epoxide Hydrosilylation: From Stoichiometric to Sustainable Catalytic Reactions

Here, the evolution of the titanocene-catalyzed hydrosilylation of epoxides that yields the corresponding anti-Markovnikov alcohols is summarized. The study focuses on aspects of sustainability, efficient catalyst activation, and stereoselectivity. The latest variant of the reaction employs polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS), a waste product of the Müller-Rochow process as terminal reductant, features an efficient catalyst activation with benzylMgBr and the use of the bench stable Cp₂TiCl₂ as precatalyst. The combination of olefin epoxidation and epoxide hydrosilylation provides a uniquely efficient approach to the formal anti-Markovnikov addition of H₂O to olefins.

Asymmetric Radical Bicyclization for Stereoselective Construction of Tricyclic Chromanones and Chromanes with Fused Cyclopropanes

Asymmetric radical bicyclization processes have been developed via metalloradical catalysis (MRC) to stereoselectively construct chiral chromanones and chromanes bearing fused cyclopropanes. Through optimization of a versatile D2-symmetric chiral amidoporphyrin ligand platform, a Co(II)-metalloradical system can homolytically activate both diazomalonates and α-aryldiazomethanes containing different alkene functionalities under mild conditions for effective radical bicyclization, delivering cyclopropane-fused tricyclic chromanones and chromanes, respectively, in high yields with excellent control of both diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities. Combined computational and experimental studies, including the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detection and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO) trapping of key radical intermediates, shed light on the working details of the underlying stepwise radical mechanisms of the Co(II)-catalyzed bicyclization processes. The two catalytic radical processes provide effective synthetic tools for stereoselective construction of valuable cyclopropane-fused chromanones and chromanes with newly generated contiguous stereogenic centers. As a specific demonstration of synthetic application, the Co(II)-catalyzed radical bicyclization has been employed as a key step for the first asymmetric total synthesis of the natural product (+)-Radulanin J.

Stereostructural analysis of flexible oxidized fatty acids by VCD spectroscopy

Oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids produces various oxidized lipids whose absolute configuration (AC) and conformations are difficult to analyze due to their flexibility. Through studies on hydroxy fatty acids, lipid hydroperoxides, and lipid epoxides, this work demonstrates the effectiveness of VCD spectroscopy to elucidate their AC and conformational preferences.

Radical differentiation of two ester groups in unsymmetrical diazomalonates for highly asymmetric olefin cyclopropanation

Diazomalonates have been demonstrated as effective metalloradicophiles for asymmetric radical olefin cyclopropanation via Co(II)-metalloradical catalysis (MRC). Supported by D ₂-symmetric chiral amidoporphyrin ligand, Co(II)-based metalloradical system can efficiently activate unsymmetrical methyl phenyl diazomalonate (MPDM) with effective differentiation of the two ester groups for asymmetric cyclopropanation, enabling stereoselective construction of 1,1-cyclopropanediesters bearing two contiguous chiral centers, including all-carbon quaternary stereogenic center. The Co(II)-catalyzed asymmetric cyclopropanation, which operates at room temperature without slow addition of the diazo compound, is generally applicable to broad-ranging olefins and tolerates various functionalities, providing a streamlined synthesis of chiral 1,1-cyclopropanediesters in high yields with both high diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity. Combined computational and experimental studies support the underlying stepwise radical mechanism for Co(II)-catalyzed cyclopropanation. In addition to functioning as 1,3-dipoles for forming five-membered structures, enantioenriched (E)-1,1-cyclopropanediesters serve as useful building blocks for stereoselective synthesis of different cyclopropane derivatives. In addition, the enantioenriched (E)-1,1-cyclopropanediesters can be stereoselectively converted to (Z)-diastereomers.

Titanocene(III)-Catalyzed Precision Deuteration of Epoxides

We describe a titanocene(III)-catalyzed deuterosilylation of epoxides that provides β-deuterated anti-Markovnikov alcohols with excellent D-incorporation, in high yield, and often excellent diastereoselectivity after desilylation. The key to the success of the reaction is a novel activation method of Cp₂ TiCl₂ and (tBuC₅ H₄ )₂ TiCl₂ with BnMgBr and PhSiD₃ to provide [(RC₅ H₄ )₂ Ti(III)D] without isotope scrambling. It was developed after discovering an off-cycle scrambling with the previously described method. Our precision deuteration can be applied to the synthesis of drug precursors and highlights the power of combining radical chemistry with organometallic catalysis.

Controlling Enantioselectivity and Diastereoselectivity in Radical Cascade Cyclization for Construction of Bicyclic Structures

Radical cascade cyclization reactions are highly attractive synthetic tools for the construction of polycyclic molecules in organic synthesis. While it has been successfully implemented in diastereoselective synthesis of natural products and other complex compounds, radical cascade cyclization faces a major challenge of controlling enantioselectivity. As the first application of metalloradical catalysis (MRC) for controlling enantioselectivity as well as diastereoselectivity in radical cascade cyclization, we herein report the development of a Co(II)-based catalytic system for asymmetric radical bicyclization of 1,6-enynes with diazo compounds. Through the fine-tuning of D2-symmetric chiral amidoporphyrins as the supporting ligands, the Co(II)-catalyzed radical cascade process, which proceeds in a single operation under mild conditions, enables asymmetric construction of multisubstituted cyclopropane-fused tetrahydrofurans bearing three contiguous stereogenic centers, including two all-carbon quaternary centers, in high yields with excellent stereoselectivities. Combined computational and experimental studies have shed light on the underlying stepwise radical mechanism for this new Co(II)-based cascade bicyclization that involves the relay of several Co-supported C-centered radical intermediates, including α-, β-, γ-, and ε-metalloalkyl radicals. The resulting enantioenriched cyclopropane-fused tetrahydrofurans that contain a trisubstituted vinyl group at the bridgehead, as showcased in several stereospecific transformations, may serve as useful intermediates for stereoselective organic synthesis. The successful demonstration of this new asymmetric radical process via Co(II)-MRC points out a potentially general approach for controlling enantioselectivity as well as diastereoselectivity in synthetically attractive radical cascade reactions.

Asymmetric Radical Process for General Synthesis of Chiral Heteroaryl Cyclopropanes

A highly efficient catalytic method has been developed for asymmetric radical cyclopropanation of alkenes with in situ-generated α-heteroaryldiazomethanes via Co(II)-based metalloradical catalysis (MRC). Through fine-tuning the cavity-like environments of newly-synthesized D2-symmetric chiral amidoporphyrins as the supporting ligand, the optimized Co(II)-based metalloradical system is broadly applicable to α-pyridyl and other α-heteroaryldiazomethanes for asymmetric cyclopropanation of wide-ranging alkenes, including several types of challenging substrates. This new catalytic methodology provides a general access to valuable chiral heteroaryl cyclopropanes in high yields with excellent both diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities. Combined computational and experimental studies further support the underlying stepwise radical mechanism of the Co(II)-based olefin cyclopropanation involving α- and γ-metalloalkyl radicals as the key intermediates.

Titanocene-Catalyzed [2+2] Cycloaddition of Bisenones and Comparison with Photoredox Catalysis and Established Methods

Cp2 Ti(TFA) is a broadly applicable catalyst for the [2+2] cycloaddition of bisenones by inner-sphere electron transfer. The attractiveness of this mechanism is shown by comparison with outer-sphere ET methods. DFT calculations show that the reaction proceeds through a unique unfavorable 5-exo (the rate-determining step) and a favorable 4-exo cyclization.

Asymmetric Radical Cyclopropanation of Dehydroaminocarboxylates: Stereoselective Synthesis of Cyclopropyl α-Amino Acids

A catalytic radical process has been developed for asymmetric cyclopropanation of dehydroaminocarboxylates with in situ-generated α-aryldiazomethanes via Co(II)-based metalloradical catalysis (MRC). Through fine-tuning the environments of D ₂-symmetric chiral amidoporphyrin platform as the supporting ligands, the Co(II)-metalloradical system can effectively activate various α-aryldiazomethanes to cyclopropanate different dehydroaminocarboxylates under mild conditions, enabling the stereoselective synthesis of chiral cyclopropyl α-amino acid derivatives. In addition to high yields and excellent enantioselectivities, the Co(II)-catalyzed asymmetric radical cyclopropanation exhibits (Z)-diastereoselectivity, which is the opposite of uncatalyzed thermal reaction. Combined computational and experimental studies support a stepwise radical mechanism for the Co(II)-catalyzed cyclopropanation reaction. The resulting enantioenriched (Z)-α-amino-β-arylcyclopropanecarboxylates, as showcased for the efficient synthesis of dipeptides, may serve as unique non-proteinogenic amino acid building blocks for the design and preparation of novel peptides with restricted conformations.

Metalloradical activation of carbonyl azides for enantioselective radical aziridination

Organic azides have been increasingly employed as nitrogen sources for catalytic olefine aziridination due to their ease of preparation and generation of benign N₂ as the only byproduct. Among common organic azides, carbonyl azides have not been previously demonstrated as effective nitrogen sources for intermolecular olefin aziridination despite the synthetic utilities of N-carbonyl aziridines. As a new application of metalloradical catalysis, we have developed a catalytic system that can effectively employ the carbonyl azide TrocN₃ for highly asymmetric aziridination of alkenes at room temperature. The resulting enantioenriched N-Trocaziridines have been shown as valuable chiral synthons for stereoselective synthesis of other chiral aziridines and various chiral amines. The Co(II)-based metalloradical system, which proceeds with distinctive stepwise radical mechanism, may provide a general method for asymmetric synthesis of chiral aziridines from alkenes with organic azides.

Design Platform for Sustainable Catalysis with Radicals: Electrochemical Activation of Cp2 TiCl2 for Catalysis Unveiled

The combination of synthesis, rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements, and computational investigations with the aid of DFT methods shows how a thiourea, a squaramide, and a bissulfonamide as additives affect the Eq Cr equilibrium of Cp2 TiCl2 . We have, for the first time, provided quantitative data for the Eq Cr equilibrium and have determined the stoichiometry of adduct formation of [Cp2 Ti(III)Cl2 ]- , [Cp2 Ti(III)Cl] and [Cp2 Ti(IV)Cl2 ] and the additives. By studying the structures of the complexes formed by DFT methods, we have established the Gibbs energies and enthalpies of complex formation as well as the adduct structures. The results not only demonstrate the correctness of our use of the Eq Cr equilibrium as predictor for sustainable catalysis. They are also a design platform for the development of novel additives in particular for enantioselective catalysis.

Enantioconvergent Amination of Racemic Tertiary C-H Bonds

Racemization is considered to be an intrinsic stereochemical feature of free radical chemistry as can be seen in traditional radical halogenation reactions of optically active tertiary C-H bonds. If the facile process of radical racemization could be effectively combined with an ensuing step of bond formation in an enantioselective fashion, then it would give rise to deracemizative functionalization of racemic tertiary C-H bonds for stereoselective construction of chiral molecules bearing quaternary stereocenters. As a demonstration of this unique potential in radical chemistry, we herein report that metalloradical catalysis can be successfully applied to devise Co(II)-based catalytic system for enantioconvergent radical amination of racemic tertiary C(sp³)-H bonds. The key to the success of the radical process is the development of Co(II)-based metalloradical catalyst with fitting steric, electronic, and chiral environments of the D₂-symmetric chiral amidoporphyrin as the supporting ligand. The existence of optimal reaction temperature is recognized as an important factor in the realization of the enantioconvergent radical process. Supported by an optimized chiral ligand, the Co(II)-based metalloradical system can effectively catalyze the enantioconvergent 1,6-amination of racemic tertiary C(sp³)-H bonds at the optimal temperature, affording chiral α-tertiary amines in excellent yields with high enantiocontrol of the newly created quaternary stereocenters. Systematic studies, including experiments utilizing optically active deuterium-labeled C-H substrates as a model system, shed light on the underlying mechanistic details of this new catalytic process for enantioconvergent radical C-H amination. The remarkable power to create quaternary stereocenters bearing multiple functionalities from ubiquitous C-H bonds, as showcased with stereoselective construction of bicyclic N-heterocycles, opens the door for future synthetic applications of this new radical technology.

Titanocene-Catalyzed Regiodivergent Epoxide Opening – From Desymmetrizing meso-Epoxides to Regiodivergent Arylation of Epoxides

While SN2 based desymmetrization of meso-epoxides has been extensively researched, the more general regioselective opening of cis-1,2 substituted epoxides via SN2 mechanism remains elusive. This short review outlines, how this limitation could be overcome by parting with SN2 and moving towards a radical-based mechanism. The development and refinement of the titanocene(III)-catalyzed regiodivergent epoxide opening (REO) is described.

Nickel-Catalyzed Asymmetric Domino Ring Opening/Cross-Coupling Reaction of Cyclobutanones via a Reductive Strategy

Herein we demonstrate the successful application of reductive strategy in the asymmetric domino ring opening/cross-coupling reaction of prochiral cyclobutanones. Under the catalysis of a chiral nickel complex, various aryl iodide-tethered cyclobutanones were reacted with alkyl bromides as the electrophilic coupling partner, providing a variety of chiral indanones bearing a quaternary stereogenic center in highly enantioselective manner, which can be further converted to diverse benzene-fused cyclic compounds including indane, indene, dihydrocoumarin, and dihydroquinolinone. The preliminary mechanistic investigations support a mechanism involving Ni(I)-mediated enantiotopic C-C σ-bond activation of cyclobutanones as key elementary step in the catalytic cycle.

Sulfinyl-Mediated Stereoselective Functionalization of Acyclic Conjugated Dienes

The chemo- and stereocontrolled functionalization of conjugated sulfinyl dienes in a cascade process that involves a conjugate addition, diastereoselective protonation and a [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement is reported. Enantioenriched 1,4-diol and 1,4-aminoalcohol derivatives are obtained in a very straightforward manner. Further functionalization of these structures, including highly stereoselective epoxidation, dihydroxylation and the stereodivergent synthesis of several polyols in a controlled fashion is described.

Enantioselective Radical Construction of 5-Membered Cyclic Sulfonamides by Metalloradical C-H Amination

Both arylsulfonyl and alkylsulfonyl azides can be effectively activated by the cobalt(II) complexes of D₂-symmetric chiral amidoporphyrins for enantioselective radical 1,5-C-H amination to stereoselectively construct 5-membered cyclic sulfonamides. In addition to C-H bonds with varied electronic properties, the Co(II)-based metalloradical system features chemoselective amination of allylic C-H bonds and is compatible with heteroaryl groups, producing functionalized 5-membered chiral cyclic sulfonamides in high yields with high enantioselectivities. The unique profile of reactivity and selectivity of the Co(II)-catalyzed C-H amination is attributed to its underlying stepwise radical mechanism, which is supported by several lines of experimental evidence.

Recent Advances in Titanium Radical Redox Catalysis

New catalytic strategies that leverage single-electron redox events have provided chemists with useful tools for solving synthetic problems. In this context, Ti offers opportunities that are complementary to late transition metals for reaction discovery. Following foundational work on epoxide reductive functionalization, recent methodological advances have significantly expanded the repertoire of Ti radical chemistry. This Synopsis summarizes recent developments in the burgeoning area of Ti radical catalysis with a focus on innovative catalytic strategies such as radical redox-relay and dual catalysis.

Merging Regiodivergent Catalysis with Atom-Economical Radical Arylation

A titanocene-catalyzed regiodivergent radical arylation is described that allows access to either enantiomerically pure tetrahydroquinolines or indolines from a common starting material. The regioselectivity of epoxide opening that results in the high selectivity of heterocycle formation is controlled by two factors, the absolute configuration of the enantiopure ligands of the (C5 H4 R)2 TiX2 catalyst and the inorganic ligand X (X=Cl, OTs). The overall reaction is atom-economical and constitutes a radical Friedel-Crafts alkylation.

Asymmetric Induction and Enantiodivergence in Catalytic Radical C-H Amination via Enantiodifferentiative H-Atom Abstraction and Stereoretentive Radical Substitution

Control of enantioselectivity remains a major challenge in radical chemistry. The emergence of metalloradical catalysis (MRC) offers a conceptually new strategy for addressing this and other outstanding issues. Through the employment of D₂-symmetric chiral amidoporphyrins as the supporting ligands, Co(II)-based MRC has enabled the development of new catalytic systems for asymmetric radical transformations with a unique profile of reactivity and selectivity. With the support of new-generation HuPhyrin chiral ligands whose cavity environment can be fine-tuned, the Co-centered d-radicals enable to address challenging issues that require exquisite control of fundamental radical processes. As showcased with asymmetric 1,5-C-H amination of sulfamoyl azides, the enantiocontrol of which has proven difficult, the judicious use of HuPhyrin ligand by tuning the bridge length and other remote nonchiral elements allows for controlling both the degree and sense of asymmetric induction in a systematic manner. This effort leads to successful development of new Co(II)-based catalytic systems that are highly effective for enantiodivergent radical 1,5-C-H amination, producing both enantiomers of the strained five-membered cyclic sulfamides with excellent enantioselectivities. Detailed deuterium-labeling studies, together with DFT computation, have revealed an unprecedented mode of asymmetric induction that consists of enantiodifferentiative H-atom abstraction and stereoretentive radical substitution.

Next-Generation D2 -Symmetric Chiral Porphyrins for Cobalt(II)-Based Metalloradical Catalysis: Catalyst Engineering by Distal Bridging

Novel D2 -symmetric chiral amidoporphyrins with alkyl bridges across two chiral amide units on both sides of the porphyrin plane (designated "HuPhyrin") have been effectively constructed in a modular fashion to permit variation of the bridge length. The CoII complexes of HuPhyrin, [Co(HuPhyrin)], represent new-generation metalloradical catalysts where the metal-centered d-radical is situated inside a cavity-like ligand with a more rigid chiral environment and enhanced hydrogen-bonding capability. As demonstrated with cyclopropanation and aziridination as model reactions, the bridged [Co(HuPhyrin)] functions notably different from the open catalysts, exhibiting significant enhancement in both reactivity and stereoselectivity. Furthermore, the length of the distal alkyl bridge can have a remarkable influence on the catalytic properties.

Catalytic Radical Process for Enantioselective Amination of C(sp3 )-H Bonds

A new catalytic radical system involving CoII -based metalloradical catalysis is effective in activating sulfamoyl azides for enantioselective radical 1,6-amination of C(sp3 )-H bonds, affording six-membered chiral heterocyclic sulfamides in high yields with excellent enantioselectivities. The CoII -catalyzed C-H amination features an unusual degree of functional-group tolerance and chemoselectivity. The unique reactivity and stereoselectivity is attributed to the underlying stepwise radical pathway. The resulting optically active cyclic sulfamides can be readily converted into synthetically useful chiral 1,3-diamine derivatives without loss in enantiopurity.

Aziridines activated by N-acylation are opened to the higher substituted radical through electron transfer from titanocene(III) complexes in a novel catalytic reaction. This reaction is applicable in conjugate additions, reductions, and cyclizations and suited for the construction of quaternary carbon centers. The concerted mechanism of the ring opening is indicated by DFT calculations.

A green strategy for the synthesis of sulfone derivatives of p-methylaminophenol: Kinetic evaluation and antibacterial susceptibility

This is one of the few examples in which the diverse products have been synthesized just by changing the applied potential. The synthesis of sulfonyl derivatives of p-methylaminophenol were carried out by reaction of the electrogenerated p-methylquinoneimine with sulfinic acids. Various types of mono (MSP), bis (BSP) and tris (TSP) sulfonyl p-methyl aminophenols were obtained by changing the electrode potential, in one pot under green conditions. The mono sulfonyl-p-(methylamino)phenol derivatives (MSP) were assessed for their in vitro antibacterial activity against the gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram negative (Escherichia coli) strains. It was found that the tested compounds were more active against Staphylococcus aureus than Escherichia coli. We also found that the antimicrobial activity of MSP derivatives to vary in the order MSP₄ (R = CH₃) > MSP₁ (R = p-tolyl) ≈ MSP₂ (R = phenyl) > MSP₃ (R = p-ClC₆H₄). Moreover, the observed homogeneous rate constants (k_obs) of the reaction of p-methyl quinoneimine with sulfinic acids were estimated in various pH values, based on the EC and ECEC mechanisms, by comparing the simulated cyclic voltammograms with the experimental ones.

Metalloradical activation of α-formyldiazoacetates for the catalytic asymmetric radical cyclopropanation of alkenes

For the first time, α-formyldiazoacetates have been successfully applied for the asymmetric cyclopropanation of alkenes via Co(ii)-based metalloradical catalysis. The cobalt(ii) complex of the D₂-symmetric chiral amidoporphyrin [Co(3,5-Di ^t Bu-ChenPhyrin)] is an effective metalloradical catalyst that can activate α-formyldiazoacetates to cyclopropanate both aromatic and aliphatic olefins with varied electronic properties, affording the synthetically useful 1,1-cyclopropaneformylesters in high yields with both high diastereo- and enantioselectivity.
