Beryllium as a Base: Complexes of Be(CO)3 with HX (X=F, Cl, Br, CN, NC, CCH, OH)

Beryllium chemistry is typically governed by its electron deficient character, but in some compounds it can act as a base. In order to understand better the unusual basicity of Be, we have systematically explored the complexes of one such compound, Be(CO)3, towards several hydrogen bond donors HX (X=F, Cl, Br, CN, NC, CCH, OH). For all complexes we find three different minima, two hydrogen bonded minima (to the Be or O atoms), and one weak beryllium bonded minimum. Further characterization of the interactions using a topological analysis of the electron density and Symmetry Adapted Perturbation Theory (SAPT) provide insight into the nature of these interactions. Overall these results highlight the capability of certain beryllium compounds to act as either a weak Lewis acid or, unconventionally, a Lewis base whose basicity towards hydrogen bonding is comparable to that of π systems.

Beryllium Dimer Reactions with Acetonitrile: Formation of Strong Be-Be Bonds

Laser ablated Be atoms have been reacted with acetonitrile molecules in 4 K solid neon matrix. The diberyllium products BeBeNCCH3 and CNBeBeCH3 have been identified by D and 13C isotopic substitutions and quantum chemical calculations. The stabilization of the diberyllium species is rationalized from the formation of the real Be-Be single bonds with bond distances as 2.077 and 2.058 Å and binding energies as -27.1 and -77.2 kcal/mol calculated at CCSD (T)/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory for BeBeNCCH3 and CNBeBeCH3, respectively. EDA-NOCV analysis described the interaction between Be2 and NC···CH3 fragments as Lewis "acid-base" interactions. In the complexes, the Be2 moiety carries positive charges which transfer from antibonding orbital of Be2 to the bonding fragments significantly strengthen the Be-Be bonds that are corroborated by AIM, LOL and NBO analyses. In addition, mono beryllium products BeNCCH3, CNBeCH3, HBeCH2CN and HBeNCCH2 have also been observed in our experiments.

A Personal Account on Inorganic Reaction Mechanisms

The presented Review is focused on the latest research in the field of inorganic chemistry performed by the van Eldik group and his collaborators. The first part of the manuscript concentrates on the interaction of nitric oxide and its derivatives with biologically important compounds. We summarized mechanistic information on the interaction between model porphyrin systems (microperoxidase) and NO as well as the recent studies on the formation of nitrosylcobalamin (CblNO). The following sections cover the characterization of the Ru(II)/Ru(III) mixed-valence ion-pair complexes, including Ru(II)/Ru(III)(edta) complexes. The last part concerns the latest mechanistic information on the DFT techniques applications. Each section presents the most important results with the mechanistic interpretations.

Beryllium compounds for the carbon-halogen bond activation of phenyl halides: the role of non-innocent ligands

Beryllium is a metallomimetic main-group element, i.e., it behaves similarly to transition metals (TMs) in some bond activation processes. To investigate the ability of Be compounds to activate C-X bonds (X = F-I), we have computationally investigated, using DFT methods, the reaction of (CAAC)2Be (CAAC = 1-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidin-2-ylidene) and a series of five-membered heterocyclic beryllium bidentate ligands with phenyl halides. We have analysed all plausible reaction mechanisms and our results show that, after the initial C-X oxidative addition, migration of the phenyl group occurs towards the less electronegative heteroatom. Our theoretical study highlights the important role of bidentate non-innocent ligands in providing the required electrons for the initial Ph-X oxidative addition. In contrast, the monodentate ligand, CAAC, does not favour this oxidative addition.

Ligand exchange at tetra-coordinated beryllium centres

Mono and dinuclear phosphine complexes of beryllium halides [(PMe₃)₂BeX₂], [(PMe₃)BeX₂]₂ and [(PCy₃)BeX₂]₂ (X = Cl, Br, I) were synthesised and characterised via NMR and IR spectroscopy as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. Dissociation and ligand exchange processes at these complexes were investigated through variable temperature NMR experiments in combination with line shape analysis and complemented by quantum chemical calculations. The PMe₃ dissociation energy is smallest in [(PMe₃)₂BeCl₂], while PMe₃ exchange is similar in energy in all mononuclear [(PMe₃)₂BeX₂] complexes and follows an interchange mechanism. While [(PMe₃)BeX₂]₂ dissociates homolytically, [(PCy₃)BeX₂]₂ cleaves one phosphine ligand. These distinctive dissociation processes account for the different chemical behaviour of these complexes.

Dismantlement of ammonia upon interaction with Ben (n ≤ 10) clusters

The interaction of ammonia with Be_n (n < 1-10) clusters has been investigated by density functional theory and ab initio calculations. The main conclusion is that, regardless of the size of the Be cluster, neither the structure of ammonia nor that of the Be clusters are preserved due to a systematic dissociation of its NH bonds and a spontaneous H-shift toward the available Be atoms. This H migration not only leads to rather stable BeH bonds, but dramatically enhances the strength of the BeN bonds as well. Accordingly, the maximum stability is found for the interaction with the beryllium trimer, leading to a complex with three NBe and three BeH bonds. Another maximum in stability, although lower than that reached for n = 3, is found for the Be heptamer, since from n = 6, a new NBe bond is formed, so that complexes from n = 6 to n = 10 are characterized by the formation of a NBe₄ moiety, whose stability reaches a maximum at n = 7. The bonding characteristics of the different species formed are analyzed by means of AIM, NBO, ELF and AdNDP approaches.

The oxidation state in low-valent beryllium and magnesium compounds

Low-valent group 2 (E = Be and Mg) stabilized compounds have been long synthetically pursued. Here we discuss the electronic structure of a series of Lewis base-stabilized Be and Mg compounds. Despite the accepted zero(0) oxidation state nature of the group 2 elements of some recent experimentally accomplished species, the analysis of multireference wavefunctions provides compelling evidence for a strong diradical character with an oxidation state of +2. Thus, we elaborate on the distinction between a description as a donor-acceptor interaction L(0) ⇆ E(0) ⇄ L(0) and the internally oxidized situation, better interpreted as a diradical L(-1) → E(+2) ← L(-1) species. The experimentally accomplished examples rely on the strengthened bonds by increasing the π-acidity of the ligand; avoiding this interaction could lead to an unprecedented low-oxidation state.

π Back-Donation from a Beryllium Dibromide Fragment at the Expense of Its σ Strength

It is common knowledge that metal-to-ligand π back-donation requires filled atomic orbitals at the metal center. However, we show through a combined experimental and theoretical approach that Be(II)→N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) π back-donation is present in the two carbene adducts [(iPr)BeBr₂] (1) and [(iPr)₂BeBr₂] (2) (iPr = 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene). These complexes were characterized with NMR, IR, and Raman spectroscopy as well as with single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. The unusual bonding situation is understood from the results of energy decomposition analysis in combination with natural orbital for chemical valence and quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules analysis. The obtained findings shed light on the unusually high Be-C bond strength in carbene adducts to beryllium compounds and rationalize their geometry and reactivity.

The Valence Orbitals of the Alkaline-Earth Atoms

Quantum chemical calculations of the alkaline-earth oxides, imides and dihydrides of the alkaline-earth atoms (Ae=Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) and the calcium cluster Ca6 H9 [N(SiMe3 )2 ]3 (pmdta)3 (pmdta=N,N,N',N'',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine) have been carried out by using density functional theory. Analysis of the electronic structures by charge and energy partitioning methods suggests that the valence orbitals of the lighter atoms Be and Mg are the (n)s and (n)p orbitals. In contrast, the valence orbitals of the heavier atoms Ca, Sr and Ba comprise the (n)s and (n-1)d orbitals. The alkaline-earth metals Be and Mg build covalent bonds like typical main-group elements, whereas Ca, Sr and Ba covalently bind like transition metals. The results not only shed new light on the covalent bonds of the heavier alkaline-earth metals, but are also very important for understanding and designing experimental studies.

Bonding between electron-deficient atoms: strong Lewis-acid character preserved in X–Y–X (X = B, Al; Y = Be, Mg) bridges

Beryllium bis(diazaborolyl) derivatives and their Mg and Al-containing analogues are stable compounds stabilized through covalent bonds between electron-deficient atoms, and behave as good Lewis acids.

Hydrogen bonds and halogen bonds in complexes of carbones L→C←L as electron donors to HF and ClF, for L = CO, N2, HNC, PH3, and SH2

MP2 and EOM-CCSD calculations have been carried out to determine the structures, binding energies, and spin-spin coupling constants of carbone complexes L→C←L with the carbone the electron donor to HF or ClF, for L = CO, N₂, HNC, PH₃, and SH₂.

Intriguing structural, bonding and reactivity features in some beryllium containing complexes

We highlighted our contributions to Be chemistry which include bond-stretch isomerism in Be₃²⁻ species, Be complexes bound with noble gas, CO, and N₂, Be based nanorotors, and intriguing bonding situations in some Be complexes.

The shortest Th-Th distance from a new type of quadruple bond

Compounds featuring unsupported metal-metal bonds between actinide elements remain highly sought after yet confined experimentally to inert gas matrix studies. Notwithstanding this paucity, actinide-actinide bonding has been the subject of extensive computational research. In this contribution, high level quantum chemical calculations at both the scalar and spin-orbit levels are used to probe the Th-Th bonding in a range of zero valent systems of general formula LThThL. Several of these compounds have very short Th-Th bonds arising from a new type of Th-Th quadruple bond with a previously unreported electronic configuration featuring two unpaired electrons in 6d-based δ bonding orbitals. H₃AsThThAsH₃ is found to have the shortest Th-Th bond yet reported (2.590 Å). The Th₂ unit is a highly sensitive probe of ligand electron donor/acceptor ability; we can tune the Th-Th bond from quadruple to triple, double and single by judicious choice of the L group, up to 2.888 Å for singly-bonded ONThThNO.

Photoelectron Velocity Map Imaging Spectroscopy of the Beryllium Sulfide Anion, BeS. J Phys Chem A 2017;121:5645-5650. [PMID: 28691819 DOI: 10.1021/acs.jpca.7b04894]

Slow electron velocity map imaging (SEVI) spectroscopy was used to examine the BeS^- anion to neutral ground-state transition, X ²Σ⁺ → X ¹Σ⁺. Rotational constants, vibrational intervals, and the electron binding energy of BeS^- were determined. Partially resolved rotational contours were seen due to the relatively small moment of inertia of beryllium sulfide. Upon analysis of the rotational contours, it was found that changes in the molecular rotational angular momentum, ΔN = -1, -2, -3, and -4, facilitated photodetachment at near-threshold photon energies. The electron affinity of BeS was found to be 2.3346(2) eV. SEVI spectra recorded using photon energies near the threshold for Δv = -1 processes exhibited features that were associated with a dipole-bound state (DBS) of BeS^-. Autodetachment spectroscopy was used to probe this state, and rotationally resolved data were obtained for the DBS ²Σ⁺, v' = 0 - X ²Σ⁺, v″ = 0 transition. Analysis of this structure provided the rotational constants for BeS^- X, v″ = 0, and the electron binding energy of the DBS. Electronic structure calculations, performed at the RCCSD(T) and MRCI levels of theory, gave predictions that were in good agreement with the experimental observations.
