Abstract
Over the past few years, there has been a surge of interest in the chemistry of bicyclobutanes (BCBs). Although BCBs have been used to synthesize bicyclo[2.1.1]hexanes and bicyclo[3.1.1]heptanes, the synthesis of bicyclo[4.1.1]octanes has remained elusive. Herein, we report the first Lewis acid-catalyzed unexpected (4+3) annulation of para-quinonemethides (p-QMs) with BCBs allowing the synthesis of oxabicyclo[4.1.1]octanes proceeding under mild conditions. With 5 mol % of Bi(OTf)3, the reaction afforded the (4+3) annulated product in high regioselectivity and good functional group compatibility via a simultaneous Lewis acid activation of BCBs and p-QMs. The reaction is likely initiated by the 1,6-addition of Lewis acid activated BCBs to p-QMs followed by the C2-selective intramolecular addition of the phenol moiety to the generated cyclobutyl cation intermediate. Moreover, detailed mechanistic studies provided insight into the mechanism of the reaction.

Abstract
Under mild and metal-free reaction conditions, a facile one-pot synthesis of oxygen- and nitrogen-containing benzoheterocycles has been achieved through [4 + 1] annulation of para-quinone methides, followed by an oxidation/elimination sequence, efficiently synthesizing functionalized 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran, benzofuran-2(3H)-one, and indole derivatives in moderate to good yields (up to 72%). A novel functional group tolerant oxidative Nef reaction utilizes DDQ without a base.

Abstract
Demonstrated here is an asymmetric nucleophilic addition via primary activation of para-quinone methides (p-QMs) based on a chiral phosphoric acid catalytic system. In sharp contrast to previous CPA-based bifunctional activation processes that all required the nucleophiles to have an effective hydrogen bond donor unit (e.g., OH, NH), here no such unit is required in the nucleophile. N-protected indole nucleophiles were successfully utilized for the synthesis of chiral tetraarylmethanes with high efficiency and enantioselectivity under mild conditions. Therefore, this protocol significantly expanded the scope of asymmetric transformations of p-QMs.

Abstract
Organocatalytic methodologies for the derivatization of o-QM, p-QM and the analogous aza-QM have been recently developed and involve different catalytic systems such as phosphoric acids, thioureas, squaramides, NHC carbenes or chiral ammonium salts. Besides, phosphines, commonly used as ligands in metal-catalysed reactions, can be also used as organocatalysts. In this case, they are mainly involved as nucleophilic catalysts in reactions such as the Rauhut-Currier (RC) reaction. In this review, an analysis of the recent developments in racemic and enantioselective phosphine-catalysed transformations of o-QM, p-QM and aza-o-QM has been carried out.

Abstract
We herein report a two-step protocol for the asymmetric synthesis of novel chiral benzofused ϵ-lactones starting from O-protected hydroxymethyl-para-quinone methides and activated aryl esters. By using chiral isothiourea Lewis base catalysts a broad variety of differently substituted products could be obtained in yields of around 50 % over both steps with high levels of enantioselectivities, albeit low diastereoselectivities only.

Abstract
An unprecedented N-alkylation of 3-nitroindoles with para-quinone methides was developed for the first time. Using potassium carbonate as the base, a wide range of structurally diverse N-diarylmethylindole derivatives were obtained with moderated to good yields via the protection group migration/aza-1,6-Michael addition sequences. The reaction process was also demonstrated by control experiments. Different from the previous advances where 3-nitrodoles served as electrophiles trapping by various nucleophiles, the reaction herein is featured that 3-nitrodoles is defined with latent N-centered nucleophiles to react with ortho-hydrophenyl p-QMs for construction of various N-diarylmethylindoles.

Abstract
Herein, we have disclosed a rare example of an intramolecular doubly vinylogous Michael addition (DVMA). The reaction design exploits the innate reactivity of ortho-heteroatom substituted para-quinone methide (p-QM) derivatives. The sequential reaction of p-QMs and activated allyl halides proceeds through heteroatom-allylation, DVMA and oxidation to furnish a diverse range of 2-alkenyl benzofuran and 2-alkenyl indole derivatives in high yields.

Abstract
KOtBu mediated addition of sulfonylphthalides to p-quinone methides led to the selective synthesis of isochroman-1,4-diones and addition products. Interestingly, isochroman-1,4-diones were obtained via an unprecedented oxidative annulation pathway. The present work highlights a wide variety of substrates, good yields, shorter reaction time and ambient reaction conditions. Furthermore, a few addition products were transformed into functionalized heterocyclic molecules. Additionally, the scale-up experiment suggests the practical feasibility of preparing isochroman-1,4-diones in higher-scale reactions.

Abstract
ortho-Quinone methides (o-QMs) underwent formal [4 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions with arylallenes regioselectively at the styrenyl olefin to furnish the corresponding 3-methylene-2-arylchromans in moderate to good yields (up to 88%). When R ≠ H, the reactions also proceeded with moderate stereoselectivity (up to 5:1) which was governed by the nature of the R group. The 3-methylene-2-arylchromans could serve as common intermediates for further functionalization including epoxidation, oxidative cleavage/Baeyer-Villiger oxidation, Riley oxidation, acid-catalyzed rearrangement, and Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions to furnish the corresponding derivatives in moderate to good yields.

Abstract
The synthesis of aniline derivatives, common building blocks in many pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, dyes or polymers, has been limited to reactions based on benzene-toluene-xylene derivatives (BTX) due to their ample availability. Despite the large number of existing methodologies, the synthesis of chiral 4-(sec-alkyl)anilines has not been accomplished so far. In this work, a tandem strategy based on the generation of a reactive aza-p-quinone methide (aza-p-QM) intermediate followed by Cu(I)-catalyzed addition of Grignard reagents has been developed.

Abstract
A series of chiral enantiomerically pure aziridines containing a phosphine moiety were synthesized and successfully applied as organocatalysts in asymmetric intramolecular Rauhut–Currier reactions of p-quinone derivatives. The desired chiral phenols were achieved in high chemical yields and with satisfactory values of enantiomeric excess (up to 98% ee, in some cases). The stereochemical course of the title reaction may be controlled by the use of an appropriate enantiomer of the catalyst. The individual enantiomers of the organocatalyst led to the formation of specific enantiomers of the chiral product.

Abstract
The electrophilic halogenation of arenes is perhaps the simplest method to prepare aryl halides, which are important structural motifs in agrochemicals, materials, and pharmaceuticals. However, the nucleophilicity of arenes is weakened by the electron-withdrawing substituents, whose electrophilic halogenation reactions usually require harsh conditions and lead to limited substrate scopes and applications. Therefore, the halogenation of arenes containing electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) and complex bioactive compounds under mild conditions has been a long-standing challenge. Herein, we describe Brønsted acid-catalyzed halogenation of arenes with electron-withdrawing substituents under mild conditions, providing an efficient protocol for aryl halides. The hydrogen bonding of Brønsted acid with the protic solvent 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) enables this transformation and thus solves this long-standing problem.

Abstract
Due to the importance of chroman frameworks in medicinal chemistry, the development of novel synthetic methods for these structures is gaining increasing interest of chemists. Reported here is a new (4 + 2) radical annulation approach for the construction of these functional six-membered frameworks via photocatalysis. Featuring mild reaction conditions, the protocol allows readily available N-hydroxyphthalimide esters and electron-deficient olefins to be converted into a wide range of valuable chromans in a highly selective manner. Moreover, the present strategy can be used in the late-stage functionalization of natural product derivatives and biologically active compounds, which demonstrated the potential application. This method is complementary to the traditional Diels–Alder [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of ortho-quinone methides and electron-rich dienophiles, since electron-deficient dienophiles were smoothly transformed into the desired chromans. We have developed a (4 + 2) radical annulation approach for the synthesis of diverse chromans. This method is complementary to the traditional Diels–Alder [4 + 2] annulation of ortho-quinone methides and electron-rich dienophiles.![]()

Abstract
As a privileged structural motif, tetrahydroquinoline skeletons widely exist in biologically active natural products and pharmaceuticals. In this protocol, a highly diastereoselective [4 + 2] annulation of ortho-tosylaminophenyl-substituted p-QMs and cyanoalkenes to construct tetrahydroquinoline derivatives has been successfully achieved. This strategy proceeds efficiently under mild condition, offering straightforward route to a variety of 4-aryl-substituted tetrahydroquinolines with high yields, excellent diastereoselectivities, broad functional group tolerance as well as gram-scale capacity. Moreover, a one-pot reaction sequence utilizing in situ generated p-QMs under the similar condition to build tetrahydroquinoline framework is smoothly conducted with good reaction performance as well as step and atom economy.

Abstract
Dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation (DYKAT) reactions of racemic diastereomer mixtures that afford the products as essentially single diastereomers with high enantioselectivities are described. We demonstrated the DYKAT in the diastereo- and enantioselective synthesis of spirooxindoles bearing furan-fused rings. The starting materials of the DYKAT, dihydrobenzofuranone derivatives, were synthesized in racemic diastereomer mixtures, and these were transformed to the spirooxindole derivatives in high yields with high diastereo- and enantioselectivities through Michael-Henry cascade reactions with nitrostyrenes under organocatalytic conditions. In the reactions, regardless the stereochemistry of the starting materials, all the four isomers were transformed to single diastereomers with high enantioselectivities, and four new chiral centers were created.

Abstract
An asymmetric 1,6-conjugate addition to presynthesized δ-aryl-δ-cyano-disubstituted para-quinone methides through bifunctional phosphonium-amide-promoted ion-pair catalysis for acyclic all-carbon quaternary stereocenter construction has been described. Both acyclic and cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyls participate in the asymmetric alkylation reaction, furnishing a wide array of diarylmethanes bearing a single acyclic quaternary carbon stereocenter or vicinal cyclic and acyclic quaternary carbon stereocenters with high efficiency and excellent stereoselectivity. Computational studies elucidate the origin of the enantioselectivity.

Abstract
In the last few years, there has been an explosive growth in the area of para-quinone methide (p-QM) chemistry. This boom is actually due to the unique reactivity pattern of p-QMs, and also their remarkable synthetic applications. In fact, p-QMs serve as synthons for unsymmetrical diaryl- and triarylmethanes, and also for the construction of diverse range of carbocycles and heterocycles. In the last few years, a wide range of structurally complex heterocyclic frameworks could be accessed through the synthetic transformations of structurally modified stable p-QMs. Therefore, the main focus of this review article is to cover the recent advancements in the transition-metal, Lewis acid and base-catalyzed/mediated synthetic transformations of the stable p-quinone methides (p-QMs) to oxygen- and nitrogen-containing heterocycles.

Abstract
We have developed a methodology for the greatly efficient construction of significant 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran scaffolds bearing a quaternary carbon center at the C2 position by means of [4 + 1] annulation reactions between p-quinone methides and α-aryl diazoacetates as C1 synthons through organocatalysis by readily accessible TfOH catalyst under mild and transition metal-free conditions. This metal-free protocol furnishes an operationally simple and swift process for the free assembly of diverse highly functionalized 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans and also features broad substrate scope, excellent functional group compatibility, and environmental friendliness. Mechanistic investigation suggested that the reaction undergoes a rapid cascade protonation/intermolecular Michael addition/intramolecular substitution process.
