Tailoring the d-band center on Ru 1Cu single-atom alloy nanotubes for boosting electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensing. Anal Bioanal Chem 2024; 416:6103-6111. Abstract
The development of cost-effective and highly efficient electrocatalysts is critical to help electrochemical non-enzymatic sensors achieve high performance. Here, a new class of catalyst, Ru single atoms confined on Cu nanotubes as a single-atom alloy (Ru1Cu NTs), with a unique electronic structure and property, was developed to construct a novel electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensor for the first time. The Ru1Cu NTs with a diameter of about 24.0 nm showed a much lower oxidation potential (0.38 V) and 9.0-fold higher response (66.5 μA) current than Cu nanowires (Cu NWs, oxidation potential 0.47 V and current 7.4 μA) for glucose electrocatalysis. Moreover, as an electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensor, Ru1Cu NTs not only exhibited twofold higher sensitivity (54.9 μA mM-1 cm-2) and wider linear range (0.5-8 mM) than Cu NWs, but also showed a low detection limit (5.0 μM), excellent selectivity, and great stability. According to theoretical calculation results, the outstanding catalytic and sensing performance of Ru1Cu NTs could be ascribed to the upshift of the d-band center that helped promote glucose adsorption. This work presents a new avenue for developing highly active catalysts for electrochemical non-enzymatic sensors.

Abstract
Fe(II) complexes with pentadentate ligands, including N-heterocyclic carbene moieties, were prepared and electrostatically attached onto the perfluorinated surface of a mesoporous aluminosilicate. The heterogeneous catalysts were applied to the catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane and cyclohexene using H2O2 as an oxidant in CH3CN, demonstrating high performance and selectivity in alkane hydroxylation and cyclohexene epoxidation.

Abstract
High-valence metal-oxo (M-O, M = Fe, Mn, etc.) species are well-known reaction intermediates that are responsible for a wide range of pivotal oxygenation reactions and water oxidation reactions in metalloenzymes. Although extensive efforts have been devoted to synthesizing and identifying such complexes in biomimetic studies, the structure-function relationship and related reaction mechanisms of these reaction intermediates remain elusive, especially for the cobalt-oxygen species. In the present manuscript, the calculated results demonstrate that the tetraamido macrocycle ligated cobalt complex, Co(O)(TAML) (1), behaves like a chameleon: the electronic structure varies from a cobalt(III)-oxyl species to a cobalt(IV)-oxo species when a Lewis acid Sc3+ salt coordinates or an acidic hydrocarbon attacks 1. The dichotomous correlation between the reaction rates of C-H bond activation by 1 and the bond dissociation energy (BDE) vs. the acidity (pKa) was rationalized for the first time by different reaction mechanisms: for normal C-H bond activation, the Co(III)-oxyl species directly activates the C-H bond via a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) mechanism, whereas for acidic C-H bond activation, the Co(III)-oxyl species evolves to a Co(IV)-oxo species to increase the basicity of the oxygen to activate the acidic C-H bond, via a novel PCET(PT) mechanism (proton-coupled electron transfer with a PT(proton-transfer)-like transition state). These theoretical findings will enrich the knowledge of biomimetic metal-oxygen chemistry.

Abstract
The storage of solar energy in chemical bonds will depend on pH-universal catalysts that are not only impervious to acid, but actually thrive in it. Whereas other homogeneous water oxidation catalysts are less active in acid, we report a catalyst that maintained high electrocatalytic turnover frequency at pH values as low as 1.1 and 0.43 (kcat =1501±608 s-1 and 831±254 s-1 , respectively). Moreover, current densities, related to catalytic reaction rates, ranged from 15 to 50 mA cm-2 mM-1 comparable to those reported for state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts and 30 to 100 times greater than those measured for two prominent literature homogeneous catalysts at pH 1.1 and 0.43. The catalyst also exhibited excellent durability when a chemical oxidant was used (CeIV , 7400 turnovers, TOF 0.88 s-1 ). Preliminary computational studies suggest that the unusual active-site sulfonate group acts a proton relay even in strong acid, as intended.

Abstract
Isolation of the atomic O radical anion bound to a metal ion (metal-oxyl) on solid surfaces is highly desirable for an understanding of how we should design the surface structure for using oxyl as the reactive site. Owing to the analytical difficulty of oxyl, however, even identification of oxyl remains scarce. Herein, we report isovalent ZnII-oxyl and GaIII-oxyl bonds isolated in the zeolite matrix. Close similarities in reactivity, spectroscopic property, and bonding nature were observed between them, but their site requirements were entirely different; the former is generated at the monovalent ion-exchangeable site, whereas the latter at the divalent ion-exchangeable site. This study strongly suggests that tuning the polarization of the metal-oxygen bond using the charge-controlled lattice oxygens is a useful way to constrain surface metal-oxyl bonds.

Abstract
An FeII complex, 1, having a pentadentate ligand with an NHC moiety catalyzes substrate oxidation to afford 2e--oxidized products with high selectivity by suppression of overoxidation in water. A Bell-Evance-Polanyi plot for the substrate oxidation catalyzed by 1 exhibited an inflection point around 86 kcal mol-1, indicating strong C-H abstraction ability of the reactive species derived from 1.

Abstract
A mononuclear nonheme manganese(IV)-oxo complex binding the Ce4+ ion, [(dpaq)MnIV (O)]+ -Ce4+ (1-Ce4+ ), was synthesized by reacting [(dpaq)MnIII (OH)]+ (2) with cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN). 1-Ce4+ was characterized using various spectroscopic techniques, such as UV/Vis, EPR, CSI-MS, resonance Raman, XANES, and EXAFS, showing an Mn-O bond distance of 1.69 Å with a resonance Raman band at 675 cm-1 . Electron-transfer and oxygen atom transfer reactivities of 1-Ce4+ were found to be greater than those of MnIV (O) intermediates binding redox-inactive metal ions (1-Mn+ ). This study reports the first example of a redox-active Ce4+ ion-bound MnIV -oxo complex and its spectroscopic characterization and chemical properties.

Abstract
A combined experimental and theoretical investigation on the cerium(IV) oxo complex [(LOEt )2 Ce(=O)(H2 O)]⋅MeC(O)NH2 (1; LOEt - =[Co(η5 -C5 H5 ){P(O)(OEt)2 }3 ]- ) demonstrates that the intermediate spin-state nature of the ground state of the cerium complex is responsible for the versatility of its reactivity towards small molecules such as CO, CO2 , SO2 , and NO. CASSCF calculations together with magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that the ground state of the cerium complex is of multiconfigurational character and comprised of 74 % of CeIV and 26 % of CeIII . The latter is found to be responsible for its reductive addition behavior towards CO, SO2 , and NO. This is the first report to date on the influence of the multiconfigurational ground state on the reactivity of a metal-oxo complex.

Abstract
Metal-oxyl (Mn+-O•) complexes having an oxyl radical ligand, which are electronically equivalent to well-known metal-oxo (M(n+1)+═O) complexes, are surveyed as a new category of metal-based oxidants. Detection and characterization of Mn+-O• species have been made in some cases, although proposals and characterization of the species are mostly done on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The reactivity of Mn+-O• complexes will provide a way to achieve potentially difficult oxidative conversion of substrates. This Viewpoint will provide state-of-the-art knowledge on the Mn+-O• species in terms of the formation, characterization, and DFT-based proposals to shed light on the characteristics of the intriguing oxidatively active species.

Abstract
Although a terminal oxyl species bound to certain metal ions is believed to be the intermediate for various oxidation reactions, such as O-O bond generation in photosystem II (PSII), such systems have not been characterized. Herein, we report a stable ZnII -oxyl species induced by an MFI-type zeolite lattice and its reversible reactivity with O2 at room temperature. Its intriguing characteristics were confirmed by in situ spectroscopic studies in combination with quantum-chemical calculations, namely analyses of the vibronic Franck-Condon progressions and the ESR signal features of both ZnII -oxyl and ZnII -ozonide species formed during this reversible process. Molecular orbital analyses revealed that the reversible reaction between a ZnII -oxyl species and an O2 molecule proceeds via a radical O-O coupling-decoupling mechanism; the unpaired electron of the oxyl species plays a pivotal role in the O-O bond generation process.

Abstract
A dicopper(II) complex, stabilized by the bis(tpa) ligand 1,2-bis[2-[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-6-pyridyl]ethane (6-hpa), [Cu2 (μ-OH)(6-hpa)]3+ , was synthesized and structurally characterized. This complex catalyzed selective hydroxylation of benzene to phenol using H2 O2 , thus attaining large turnover numbers (TONs) and high H2 O2 efficiency. The TON after 40 hours for the phenol production exceeded 12000 in MeCN at 50 °C under N2 , the highest value reported for benzene hydroxylation with H2 O2 catalyzed by homogeneous complexes. At 22 % benzene conversion, phenol (95.2 %) and p-benzoquinone (4.8 %) were produced. The mechanism of H2 O2 activation and benzene hydroxylation is proposed.
