Carbon-Nitrogen Bond Cleavage by a Thorium-NHC-bpy Complex

Synthesis and Structure of [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2Th(bipy) and Its Reactivity toward Small Molecules

Halide exchange of (Cp3tms)2ThCl2 (1; Cp3tms = η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2) with Me3SiI furnishes (Cp3tms)2ThI2 (2), which is then reduced with potassium graphite (KC8) in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine to give the thorium bipyridyl metallocene (Cp3tms)2Th(bipy) (3) in good yield. Complex 3 was fully characterized and readily reacted with various small molecules. For example, 3 may serve as a synthetic equivalent for the (Cp3tms)2Th(II) fragment when exposed to CuI, Ph2S2, organic azides, and CS2. Moreover, upon the addition of thiobenzophenone Ph2CS, p-methylbenzaldehyde (p-MeC6H4)CHO, benzophenone Ph2CO, amidate PhCONH(p-tolyl), seleno-ketone (p,p'-dimethoxy), selenobenzophenone (p-MeOPh)2CSe, di(p-tolyl)methanimine (p-tolyl)2C═NH, 1,2-di(benzylidene)hydrazine (PhCH═N)2, and nitriles PhCN, PhCH2CN, and Ph2CHCN C-C coupling results to give (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CS)] (8), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (9), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (10), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolylNH)(Ph)CO}] (11), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-MeOPh)2CSe}] (12), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolyl)2CNH}] (13), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (14), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCN)] (16), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCH2CN)] (17), and (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CHCN)] (18), respectively. However, when thiazole is added to 3, the dimeric sulfido complex [(Cp3tms)2Th]2[μ-(bipy)CH2NCHCHS]2 (15) can be isolated. Moreover, the addition of isonitriles such as Me3CNC and PhCH2NC to 3 results in C-N bond cleavage and C-C coupling processes to form the thorium isocyanido amido complexes (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(Me3C)bipy](NC) (19) and (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(PhCH2)bipy](NC) (20), respectively. Nevertheless, upon exposure of 3 to (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane Me3SiCHN2, the bis-amido complex (Cp3tms)2Th[5,6-(Me3SiCH)bipy] (21), concomitant with N2 release, is isolated.

Unusual Actinyl Complexes with a Redox-Active N,S-Donor Ligand

Understanding the fundamental chemistry of soft N,S-donor ligands with actinides across the series is critical for separation science toward sustainable nuclear energy. This task is particularly challenging when the ligands are redox active. We herein report a series of actinyl complexes with a N,S-donor redox-active ligand that stabilizes different oxidation states across the actinide series. These complexes are isolated and characterized in the gas phase, along with high-level electronic structure studies. The redox-active N,S-donor ligand in the products, C₅H₄NS, acts as a monoanion in [U^VIO₂(C₅H₄NS^-)]⁺ but as a neutral radical with unpaired electrons localized on the sulfur atom in [Np^VO₂(C₅H₄NS^•)]⁺ and [Pu^VO₂(C₅H₄NS^•)]⁺, resulting in different oxidation states for uranium and transuranic elements. This is rationalized by considering the relative energy levels of actinyl(VI) 5f orbitals and S 3p lone pair orbitals of the C₅H₄NS^- ligand and the cooperativity between An-N and An-S bonds that provides additional stability for the transuranic elements.

A rare isocyanide derived from an unprecedented neutral yttrium(ii) bis(amide) complex

A room temperature stable complex formulated as Y(NHAr*)₂ has been prepared, where Ar* = 2,6-(2,4,6-(ⁱPr)₃C₆H₂)C₆H₃, by KC₈ reduction of ClY(NHAr*)₂. Based on EPR evidence, Y(NHAr*)₂ is an example of a d¹ Y(ii) complex with significant delocalization of the unpaired electron density from the metal to the ligand. The isolation of molecular divalent metal complexes is challenging for rare earth elements such as yttrium. In fact, stabilization of the divalent state requires judicious ligand design that allows the metal center to be coordinatively saturated. Divalent rare earth elements tend to be reactive towards various substrates. Interestingly, Y(NHAr*)₂ reacts as a radical donor towards ^t BuNC to generate an unusual yttrium isocyanide complex, CNY(NHAr*)₂, based on spectroscopic evidence and single-crystal X-ray diffraction data.

Mesoionic Carbene Complexes of Uranium(IV) and Thorium(IV)

We report the synthesis and characterization of uranium(IV) and thorium(IV) mesoionic carbene complexes [An{N(SiMe₃)₂}₂(CH₂SiMe₂NSiMe₃){MIC}] (An = U, 4U and Th, 4Th; MIC = {CN(Me)C(Me)N(Me)CH}), which represent rare examples of actinide mesoionic carbene linkages and the first example of a thorium mesoionic carbene complex. Complexes 4U and 4Th were prepared via a C–H activation intramolecular cyclometallation reaction of actinide halides, with concomitant formal 1,4-proton migration of an N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO). Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the An–carbene bond comprises only a σ-component, in contrast to the uranium(III) analogue [U{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃(MIC)] (1) where computational studies suggested that the 5f³ uranium(III) ion engages in a weak one-electron π-backbond to the MIC. This highlights the varying nature of actinide-MIC bonding as a function of actinide oxidation state. In solution, 4Th exists in equilibrium with the Th(IV) metallacycle [Th{N(SiMe₃)₂}₂(CH₂SiMe₂NSiMe₃)] (6Th) and free NHO (3). The thermodynamic parameters of this equilibrium were probed using variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy yielding an entropically favored but enthalpically endothermic process with an overall reaction free energy of ΔG_298.15K = 0.89 kcal mol^–1. Energy decomposition analysis (EDA-NOCV) of the actinide–carbon bonds in 4U and 4Th reveals that the former is enthalpically stronger and more covalent than the latter, which accounts for the respective stabilities of these two complexes.

Small-Molecule Activation Mediated by [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(bipy)

The uranium bipyridyl metallocene, [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(bipy) (2), is readily accessible in good yield by adding potassium graphite (KC₈) to a mixture of [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂UCl₂ (1) and 2,2'-bipyridine. Compound 2 was fully characterized and employed for small-molecule activation. It has been demonstrated that 2 may serve as a synthon for [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(II) fragment in the presence of Ph₂E₂ (E = S, Se), alkynes, and a variety of hetero-unsaturated molecules such as diazabutadienes, azine (Ph₂C═N)₂, o-benzoquinone, pyridine N-oxide, CS₂, isothiocyanates, and organic azides. However, upon exposure of 2 to thio-ketone Ph₂CS, aldehyde p-MePhCHO, ketone Ph₂CO, imine PhCH═NPh, azine (PhCH═N)₂, and nitrile PhCN, it may also promote C-C coupling reactions forming [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(Ph₂CS)] (16), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (17), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(Ph₂CO)] (18), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(PhCHNPh)] (19), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (20), and [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(N₂C₁₀H₇C(Ph)NH)] (22), respectively, in quantitative conversion. Furthermore, in the presence of CuI, a single-electron transfer (SET) process is observed to yield the uranium(III) iodide complex [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(I)(bipy) (15).

Mesoionic Carbenes in Low- to High-Valent Vanadium Chemistry

We report the synthesis of vanadium(V) oxo complex 1 with a pincer-type dianionic mesoionic carbene (MIC) ligand L1 and the general formula [VOCl(L1)]. A comparison of the structural (SC-XRD), electronic (UV-vis), and electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry) properties of 1 with the benzimidazolinylidene congener 2 (general formula [VOCl(L2)]) shows that the MIC is a stronger donor also for early transition metals with low d-electron population. Since electrochemical studies revealed both complexes to be reversibly reduced, the stronger donor character of MICs was not only demonstrated for the vanadium(V) but also for the vanadium(IV) oxidation state by isolating the reduced vanadium(IV) complexes [Co(Cp*)2][1] and [Co(Cp*)2][2] ([Co(Cp*)2] = decamethylcobaltocenium). The electronic structures of the compounds were investigated by computational methods. Complex 1 was found to be a moderate precursor for salt metathesis reactions, showing selective reactivity toward phenolates or secondary amides, but not toward primary amides and phosphides, thiophenols, or aryls/alkyls donors. Deoxygenation with electron-rich phosphines failed to give the desired vanadium(III) complex. However, treatment of the deprotonated ligand precursor with vanadium(III) trichloride resulted in the clean formation of the corresponding MIC vanadium(III) complex 6, which undergoes a clean two-electron oxidation with organic azides yielding the corresponding imido complexes. The reaction with TMS-N3 did not afford a nitrido complex, but instead the imido complex 10. This study reveals that, contrary to popular belief, MICs are capable of supporting early transition-metal complexes in a variety of oxidation states, thus making them promising candidates for the activation of small molecules and redox catalysis.

Systematic reductive oligomerization of isocyanides with a vanadium(ii) complex

Using a V(ii) complex as a reducing reagent, we demonstrate controlled reduction of isocyanides, resulting in decyanation of alkyl isocyanides to form a V(iii) cyanide complex or oligomerization of aryl isocyanides to form trimers and a tetramer. The pathways leading to the trimers involve a divanadium ynediamido intermediate, which further reacts with the third isocyanide molecule to selectively produce a tri(imino)deltate or an indolenine complex, by altering the temperature and stoichiometry.

Structure and magnetism of a tetrahedral uranium(iii) β-diketiminate complex

We describe the functionalisation of the previously reported uranium(iii) β-diketiminate complex (BDI)UI₂(THF)₂ (1) with one and two equivalents of a sterically demanding 2,6-diisopropylphenolate ligand (ODipp) leading to the formation of two heteroleptic complexes: [(BDI)UI(ODipp)]₂ (2) and (BDI)U(ODipp)₂ (3). The latter is a rare example of a tetrahedral uranium(iii) complex, and it shows single-molecule magnet behaviour.

Magnesium Cyanide or Isocyanide?

Preference for the binding mode of the CN- ligand to Mg (Mg-CN vs. Mg-NC) is investigated. A monomeric Mg complex with a terminal CN ligand was prepared using the dipyrromethene ligand Mes DPM which successfully blocks dimerization. While reaction of (Mes DPM)MgN(SiMe3 )2 with Me3 SiCN gave the coordination complex (Mes DPM)MgN(SiMe3 )2 ⋅NCSiMe3 , reaction with (Mes DPM)Mg(nBu) led to (Mes DPM)MgNC⋅(THF)2 . A Mg-NC/Mg-CN ratio of ≈95:5 was established by crystal-structure determination and DFT calculations. IR studies show absorbances for CN stretching at 2085 cm-1 (Mg-NC) and 2162 cm-1 (Mg-CN) as confirmed by 13 C labeling. In solution and in the solid state, the CN ligand rotates within the pocket. The calculated isomerization barrier is only 12.0 kcal mol-1 and the 13 C NMR signal for CN decoalesces at -85 °C (Mg-NC: 175.9 ppm, Mg-CN: 144.3 ppm). Experiment and theory both indicate that Mg complexes with the CN- ligand should not be named cyanides but are more properly defined as isocyanides.

Isolation of a TMTAA-Based Radical in Uranium bis-TMTAA Complexes

We report the synthesis, characterization, and electronic structure studies of a series of thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) bis-tetramethyltetraazaannulene complexes. These sandwich complexes show remarkable stability towards air and moisture, even at elevated temperatures. Electrochemical studies show the uranium complex to be stable in three different oxidation states; isolation of the oxidized species reveals a rare case of a non-innocent tetramethyltetraazaannulene (TMTAA) ligand.

New supporting ligands in actinide chemistry: tetramethyltetraazaannulene complexes with thorium and uranium

We report the synthesis, characterization, and preliminary reactivity of new heteroleptic thorium and uranium complexes supported by the macrocyclic TMTAA ligand (TMTAA = Tetramethyl-tetra-aza-annulene). The dihalide complexes Th(TMTAA)Cl₂(THF)₂ (1), [UCl₂(TMTAA)]₂ (2) and U(TMTAA)I₂ (3) are further functionalized to the Cp* derivatives ThCp*(TMTAA)Cl (4), UCp*(TMTAA)Cl (5) and UCp*(TMTAA)I (6) (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienide). Compounds 4-6 are also obtained through a one-pot reaction from standard thorium(iv) and uranium(iv) starting materials, Li2TMTAA and KCp*. Complexes 1-6 function as valuable starting materials for salt metathesis chemistry. Treatment of precursors 4 or 5 with trimethylsilylmethyllithium (LiCH₂TMS) results in the new actinide TMTAA alkyl complexes ThCp*(TMTAA)(CH₂TMS) (7) and UCp*(TMTAA)(CH₂TMTS) (8), respectively. The TMTAA-derived alkyl complexes (7 and 8) show unexpected stability and are stable for several weeks at room temperature in solution and in the solid-state. Additionally, double substitution of the halide ligands in 1-3 shows a strong dependence on the nucleophile used. While weaker nucleophiles, such as amides, and more sterically demanding nucleophiles, such as Cp (Cp = cyclopenadienide), favour the formation of bis-TMTAA "sandwich" complexes [An(TMTAA)₂] (An = Th (9) and An = U (10)), the use of oxygen-functionalized ligands like the ODipp anion (Dipp = diisopropylphenyl) results in the formation of the doubly substituted species Th(ODipp)₂TMTAA (11) and U(ODipp)₂TMTAA (12). We also describe the divergent reactivity of the TMTAA ligand towards uranium(iii). Unlike the syntheses of actinide(iv) TMTAA complexes, the synthesis of a uranium(iii) TMTAA was not successful and only uranium(iv) species could be obtained.

Thorium Metallacycle Facilitates Catalytic Alkyne Hydrophosphination

The bis(NHC)borate-supported thorium-bis(mesitylphosphido) complex (1) undergoes reversible intramolecular C-H bond activation enabling the catalytic hydrophosphination of unactivated internal alkynes. Catalytic and stoichiometric experiments support a mechanism involving reactive Th-NHC metallacycle intermediates (Int and 2).

Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of the Sterically Crowded Th3+ Complex (C5Me5)3Th Including Formation of the Thorium Carbonyl, [(C5Me5)3Th(CO)][BPh4]

The Th³⁺ complex, (C₅Me₅)₃Th, has been isolated despite the fact that tris(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) complexes are highly reactive due to steric crowding and few crystallographically characterizable Th³⁺ complexes are known due to their highly reducing nature. Reaction of (C₅Me₅)₂ThMe₂ with [Et₃NH][BPh₄] produces the cationic thorium complex [(C₅Me₅)₂ThMe][BPh₄] that can be treated with KC₅Me₅ to generate (C₅Me₅)₃ThMe, 1. The methyl group on (C₅Me₅)₃ThMe can be removed with [Et₃NH][BPh₄] to form [(C₅Me₅)₃Th][BPh₄], 2, the first cationic tris(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) metal complex, which can be reduced with KC₈ to yield (C₅Me₅)₃Th, 3. Complexes 1-3 have metrical parameters consistent with the extreme steric crowding that previously has given unusual (C₅Me₅)^- reactivity to (C₅Me₅)₃M complexes in reactions that form less crowded (C₅Me₅)₂M-containing products. However, neither sterically induced reduction nor (η¹-C₅Me₅)^- reactivity is observed for these complexes. (C₅Me₅)₃Th, which has a characteristic EPR spectrum consistent with a d¹ ground state, has the capacity for two-electron reduction via Th³⁺ and sterically induced reduction. However, it reacts with MeI to make two sterically more crowded complexes, (C₅Me₅)₃ThI, 4, and (C₅Me₅)₃ThMe, 1, rather than (C₅Me₅)₂Th(Me)I. Complex 3 also forms more crowded complexes in reactions with I₂, PhCl, and Al₂Me₆, which generate (C₅Me₅)₃ThI, (C₅Me₅)₃ThCl, and (C₅Me₅)₃ThMe, 1, respectively. The reaction of (C₅Me₅)₃Th, 3, with H₂ forms the known (C₅Me₅)₃ThH as the sole thorium-containing product. Surprisingly, (C₅Me₅)₃ThH is also observed when (C₅Me₅)₃Th is combined with 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene. [(C₅Me₅)₃Th][BPh₄] reacts with tetrahydrofuran (THF) to make [(C₅Me₅)₃Th(THF)][BPh₄], 2-THF, which is the first (C₅Me₅)₃M of any kind that does not have a trigonal planar arrangement of the (C₅Me₅)^- rings. It is also the first (C₅Me₅)₃M complex that does not ring-open THF. [(C₅Me₅)₃Th][BPh₄], 2, reacts with CO to generate a product characterized as [(C₅Me₅)₃Th(CO)][BPh₄], 5, the first example of a molecular thorium carbonyl isolable at room temperature. These results have been analyzed using density functional theory calculations.
