Abstract
MeNHC substituted germaborenium cation 2 was synthesized directly in reaction of bromo-substituted germaborene 1b with MeNHC. The adamantyl isonitrile substituted germaborenium cation 4 was obtained stepwise: substitution of the chloride atom against adamantyl isonitrile at the B-Cl unit in 1a, simultaneous migration of the chloride to the germanium atom followed by chloride abstraction using Na[BArF 4] gives the germaborenium cation 4. Substitution of the bromide atom in 1b against carbon monoxide followed by bromide abstraction using Ag[Al(OtBuF)4] leads to compound 6 exhibiting a B[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond substituted at the boron atom by a germylium cation. Treating the germaborene [Ge[double bond, length as m-dash]B-Ph] (1c) with selenium, a cycloaddition product 7 was characterised featuring a GeBSe heterocycle. Carbon dioxide reacts with 1b to give a four membered ring molecule 8 as the product of a B-C and Ge-O bond formation. In reaction of 1b with dimethylbutadiene, a product 9 of a [2 + 4] cycloaddition was isolated. Transition metal fragments [Fe(CO)4 (10), CuBr (11), AuCl (12)] show coordination at the germaborene double bond. Molecular structures of the germaborene coordination compounds 10-12 are presented and the ligand properties are discussed. After treating the germaborene [Ge[double bond, length as m-dash]B-Br] (1b) with [Cp*Al]4, insertion of a Cp*Al moiety into the B-Br bond was found (13).

Abstract
Diverse reactivity of the bulky tris(trimethylsilyl)silyl substituent [Si(SiMe3)3], also known as the hypersilyl group, was observed for amidinate-supported dichloro- and phenylchloroborane complexes. Treatment of the dichloroborane with potassium tris(trimethylsilyl)silyl led to the activation of the backbone β-carbon center and formation of saturated four-membered heterocyclic chloroboranes R'{Si(SiMe3)3}C(NR)2BCl [R' = Ph, R = Cy (3); R' = Ph, R = iPr (6); R' = tBu, R = Cy (8)], whereas the four-membered amidinate hypersilyl-substituted phenyl borane 4 {PhC(NCy)2B(Ph)[Si(SiMe3)3]} was observed for the case of an amidinate-supported phenylchloroborane. The highly deshielded 11B NMR spectroscopic resonance and the distinct difference in the 29Si NMR spectrum confirmed the presence of a σ-donating hypersilyl effect on compounds 3, 6, and 8. Reaction of 3 with the Lewis acid AlCl3 led to the formation of complex 11 in which an unusual cleavage of one of the C-N bonds of the amidinate backbone is observed. Nucleophilic substitution at the boron center of saturated chloroborane 3 with phenyllithium generated the phenylborane derivative 12, whereas the secondary monomeric boron hydride 13 was observed after treatment with alane (AlH3). All compounds (2-13) have been fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray structure determination studies.

Abstract
Herein, we reported the isolation of 2π-aromatic disiladiboretenes (L2Si2B2Ph2) [L = ArC(NtBu)2, Ar = Ph (1), Mes (2)], which have been synthesized from the straightforward reduction of silylene-borane adducts (LSiX → BX2Ph) [X = Cl, Br] with potassium graphite (KC8). X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 and 2 revealed that the Si2B2 units are completely planar, and DFT calculations suggested delocalization of 2π-electrons over the Si2B2 rings. Moreover, their photophysical properties and reactivity toward sulfur were also investigated in detail.

Abstract
Low valent group 14 compounds exhibit diverse structures and reactivities. The employment of diazaborolyl anions (NHB anions), isoelectronic analogues to N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), in group 14 chemistry leads to the exceptional structures and reactivity. The unique combination of σ-electron donation and pronounced steric hindrance impart distinct structural characteristics to the NHB-substituted low valent group 14 compounds. Notably, the modulation of the HOMO-LUMO gap in these compounds with the diazaborolyl substituents results in novel reaction patterns in the activation of small molecules and inert chemical bonds. This review mainly summarizes the recent advances in NHB-substituted low-valent heavy Group 14 compounds, emphasizing their synthesis, structural characteristics and application to small molecule activation.

Abstract
Molecular species containing multiple bonds to aluminium have long been challenging synthetic targets. Despite recent landmark discoveries in this area, heterodinuclear Al-E multiple bonds (where E is a group-14 element) have remained rare and limited to highly polarized π-interactions (Al=E ↔ +Al-E-). Here we report the isolation of three alumanyl silanide anions that feature an Al-Si core stabilized by bulky substituents and a Si-Na interaction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, spectroscopic analysis and density functional theory calculations show that the Al-Si interaction possesses partial double bond character. Preliminary reactivity studies support this description of the compounds through two resonance structures: one that displays a predominant nucleophilic character of the sodium-coordinated silicon centre in the Al-Si core, as shown by silanide-like reactivity towards halosilane electrophiles and the CH-insertion of phenylacetylene. Moreover, we report an alumanyl silanide with a sequestered sodium cation. Cleavage of the Si-Na bond by [2.2.2]cryptand increases the double bond character of the Al-Si core to produce an anion with high aluminata-silene (-Al=Si) character.

Abstract
A successful selective reduction of X2B-Tip (Tip = 1,3,5-iPr3-C6H2, X = I, Br) with KC8 and Mg metal, respectively, in the presence of a hybrid ligand (C6H4(PPh2)LSi) leads to a stable low-valent five-membered ring as a boryl radical [C6H4(PPh2)LSiBTip][Br] (1) and neutral borylene [C6H4(PPh2)LSiBTip] (2). Compound 2 reacts with 1,4-cyclohexadiene, resulting in hydrogen abstraction to afford the radical [C6H4(PPh2)LSiB(H)Tip] (3). Quantum chemical studies reveal that compound 1 is a B-centered radical, and compound 2 is a phosphane and silylene stabilized neutral borylene in a trigonal planar environment, whereas compound 3 is an amidinate-centered radical. Although compounds 1 and 2 are stabilized by hyperconjugation and π-conjugation, they display high H-abstraction energy and basicity, respectively.

Abstract
Stabilizing the exotic chemical species possessing multiple bonds is often extremely challenging due to insufficient orbital overlap, especially involving one heavier element. Bulky aryl groups and/or carbene as ligand have previously stabilized the SiSi, GeGe, and BB triple bonds. Herein, theoretical calculations have been carried out to shed light on the stability and bonding of elusive silaboryne/germaboryne (Si/GeB triple bond) stabilized by donor base ligands ((cAAC)BE(Me)(L); E = Si, L = cAACMe , NHCMe , PMe3 ; E = Ge, L = cAACMe ). The heavier analogues (Sn, Pb) have been further studied for comparison. Additionally, the effects of bulky substituents at the Si and N atoms on the structural parameters and stability of those species have been investigated. Energy decomposition analysis coupled with natural orbital for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV; for Si) showed that cAAC/NHC ligands could stabilize the exotic BSi-Me species more efficiently than PMe3 ligands. The BSi partial triple bond of the corresponding species possesses a mixture of one covalent electron sharing BSi σ-bond and two dative π-bonds (B ← Si, B → Si).

Abstract
The B-nucleophilic 9H-9-borafluorene dianion reacts with 9-chloro-9-silafluorene to afford air- and moisture-stable silylborate salts M[Ar2 (H)B-Si(H)Ar2 ] (M[HBSiH], M=Li, Na). Li[HBSiH] and Me3 SiCl give the B-pyridine adduct Ar2 (py)B-Si(H)Ar2 ((py)BSiH) or the chlorosilane Li[Ar2 (H)B-Si(Cl)Ar2 ] (Li[HBSiCl]) in C6 H6 -pyridine or THF. In both cases, the first step is H- abstraction at the B center. The resulting free borane subsequently binds a py or thf ligand. While the py adduct is stable at room temperature, the thf adduct undergoes a 1,2-H shift via the cyclic B(μ-H)Si intermediate BHSi, which is afterwards attacked at the Si atom by a Cl- ion to give Li[HBSiCl]. DFT calculations were employed to support the proposed reaction mechanism and to characterize the electronic structure of BHSi. Treatment of Li[HBSiCl] with the N-heterocyclic carbene IMe introduces the neutral donor at the Si atom and leads to Ar2 (H)B-Si(IMe)Ar2 (HBSi(IMe)), a donor-acceptor-stabilized silylene.

Abstract
Phosphinimides are long known as useful ligands in transition metal chemistry, but examples of these in low-valent silicon chemistry are rather rare. Hence, in this work, we report on the implementation of a triphenylphosphinimide moiety as a ligand of a novel silylene that is trapped as a silirane with cyclohexene. By performing activation reactions with B(p-Tol)3, HSiEt3, N2O, and NH3, we demonstrate that the silirane exhibits a silylene-like behavior, making it a "masked" silylene. Furthermore, we treated the silirane with ethylene, propylene, and trans-butene, which led to an olefin exchange. In the case of ethylene and propylene, an additional insertion of the olefin into the silicon-silicon bonds of the respective siliranes could be achieved. As the insertion of trans-butene was not feasible, we surmise that the scope of this reactivity is restricted by the steric demand of the olefin.

Abstract
Arylmethyl anions allow alkali‐metals to bind in a σ‐fashion to the lateral carbanionic centre or a π‐fashion to the aryl ring or in between these extremities, with the trend towards π bonding increasing on descending group 1. Here we review known alkali metal structures of diphenylmethane, fluorene, 2‐benzylpyridine and 4‐benzylpyridine. Next, we synthesise Li, Na, K monomers of these diarylmethyls using polydentate donors PMDETA or Me6TREN to remove competing oligomerizing interactions, studying the effect that two aromatic rings has on negative charge (de)localisation via NMR, X‐ray crystallographic and DFT studies. Diphenylmethyl and fluorenyl anions maintain C(H)−M interactions regardless of alkali‐metal, although the adjacent arene carbons engage in interactions with larger alkali‐metals. Introducing a nitrogen atom into the ring (at the 2‐ or 4‐position) encourages relocalisation of negative charge away from the deprotonated carbon and onto nitrogen. Phenyl(2‐pyridyl)methyl moves from an enamide formation at one extremity (lithium) to an aza‐allyl formation at the other extremity (potassium), while C‐ or N‐coordination modes become energetically viable for Na and K phenyl(4‐pyridyl)methyl complexes.

The amidinatoamidosilylene [LSiNMe2] [1; L = PhC(NtBu)2] was reacted with B2Br4(SMe2)2 in toluene at room temperature to form the bis(silylene)tetrabromodiborane [L{Me2N}Si]2B2Br4 (2). It was then reacted with excess KC8 in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature to afford the bis(silylene)dibromodiborene [L{Me2N}Si]2B2Br2 (3).

Abstract
The topic of heavier main group compounds possessing multiple bonds is the subject of momentous interest in modern organometallic chemistry. Importantly, there is an excitement involving the discovery of unprecedented compounds with unique bonding modes. The research in this area is still expanding, particularly the reactivity aspects of these compounds. This article aims to describe the overall developments reported on the stable derivatives of silicon and germanium involved in multiple bond formation with other group 13, and heavier groups 14, 15, and 16 elements. The synthetic strategies, structural features, and their reactivity towards different nucleophiles, unsaturated organic substrates, and in small molecule activation are discussed. Further, their physical and chemical properties are described based on their spectroscopic and theoretical studies.

Abstract
Boragermene 3 featuring a double bond between the Ge and dicoordinate B atoms has been synthesized for the first time by reacting the cyclic (alkyl)(boryl)germylene-PMe3 adduct 1 with Cl2 BN(SiMe3 )2 followed by reductive dehalogenation with KC8 . Addition of a Lewis base (Me NHC) to 3 leads to the formation of the corresponding adduct 4, which shows double bond character between the Ge and tricoordinate B atoms. Compound 3 undergoes hydrogenation with H2 concomitant with a complete scission of the Ge=B bond.

Abstract
Phosphine-stabilized germaborenes featuring an unprecedented Ge=B double bond with short B⋅⋅⋅Ge contacts of 1.886(2) (4) and 1.895(3) Å (5) were synthesized starting from an intramolecular germylene-phosphine Lewis pair (1). After oxidative addition of boron trihalides BX3 (X=Cl, Br), the addition products were reduced with magnesium and catalytic amounts of anthracene to give the borylene derivatives in yields of 78 % (4) and 57 % (5). These halide-substituted germaborenes were characterized by single-crystal structure analysis, and the electronic structures were studied by quantum-chemical calculations. According to an NBO NRT analysis, the dominating Lewis structure contains a Ge=B double bond. The germaborenes undergo a reversible, photochemically initiated [2+2] cycloaddition with the phenyl moiety of a terphenyl substituent at room temperature, forming a complex heterocyclic structure with GeIV in a strongly distorted coordination environment.

Abstract
Activation of H2 by compounds of main-group elements has received considerable attention. Herein, we report synthesis of novel monoboryl- and monoamino-substituted disilenes and their characterization by a combination of NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The monoboryldisilene reacts with two molecules of H2 to provide the corresponding trihydridodisilane and hydroborane, whereas the aminodisilene does not react with H2 under the same conditions. The present results together with our previous results indicate that the presence of the boryl-substituent on the Si=Si double bond is essential to activate the H2 molecule. The low lying empty 2p orbital on the boron atom that interacts effectively with the π*(Si=Si) orbital could be responsible for the activation of H2 .

Abstract
The push-pull effect has been widely used to effectively tune π-electron systems. Herein, we report the synthesis and properties of 1-amino-2-boryldisilene 1 as the first push-pull disilene. Its spectroscopic and structural features show substantial interactions between the Si═Si double bond and the amino and boryl substituents. The π → π* absorption band of 1 is remarkably red-shifted compared to that of the corresponding alkyl-substituted disilene 2. Treatment of 1 with H2 resulted in the cleavage of two molecules of H2 under concomitant formation of the corresponding trihydridodisilane and hydroborane.

Abstract
Electropositive boron-based substituent (phosphonium bora-ylide) with an exceptionally strong π- and σ-electron donating character dramatically increases the stability of a new type of N-heterocyclic silylene 2 featuring amino- and bora-ylide-substituents. Moreover, the related silylium ion 4 and transition-metal-silylene complexes, with trigonal-planar geometries around the silicon center, are also well stabilized. Therefore, the N,B-heterocyclic silylene 2 can be used as a strongly electron-donating innocent ligand in coordination chemistry similarly to N-heterocyclic carbenes.
