Abstract
In the current study, the coordination chemistry of nine-coordinate Ac(III) complexes with 35 monodentate and bidentate ligands was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) in terms of their geometries, charges, reaction energies, and bonding interactions. The energy decomposition analysis with naturals orbitals for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) were employed as analysis methods. Trivalent Ac exhibits the highest affinities toward hard acids (such as charged oxophilic donors, fluoride), so its classification as a hard acid is justified. Natural population analysis quantified the involvement of 5f orbitals on Ac to be about 30% of total valence electron natural configuration indicating that Ac is a member of the actinide series. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to study the pairwise correlations among the bond lengths, ΔG reaction energies, charges on Ac and donor atoms, and data from EDA-NOCV and QTAIM. Strong correlations and anticorrelations were found between Voronoi charges on donor atoms with ΔG, EDA-NOCV interaction energies and QTAIM bond critical point densities.

Abstract
Lewis base-free lanthanoid (Ln) and actinoid (An) iodides are difficult to obtain, as standard protocols describe syntheses in solutions of donor solvents which are ultimately hard to remove. We have now established a mechanochemical approach towards the synthesis of Lewis base-free f-block metal iodides with excellent yields. In particular, we describe herein the synthesis of EuI2 as an example of a divalent lanthanoid iodide, of CeI3 as an example of a trivalent lanthanoid iodide, and of UI3 as the most important actinoid iodide. Each can be obtained in high yield with minimal work-up, presenting the most efficient and simple synthetic route to access these materials to date.

Abstract
We have constructed an unprecedented MOF platform that accommodates a range of 5f-block metal ions (Th4+, U4+, Np4+, Pu4+) as the primary building block. The isoreticular actinide metal-organic frameworks (An-MOFs) exhibit periodic trends in the 12-coordinate metal environment, ligand configuration, and resulting ultramicroporosity. It holds potential in distinguishing neighboring tetravalent actinides. The metal ionic radius, carboxylate bite angle, anthracene plane twisting, interligand interactions, and countercation templating collectively determine an interplay between solvation, modulation, and complexation, resulting in a coordination saturation of the central actinide, while lanthanide counterparts are stabilized by the formation of a dimer-based motif. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that this large coordination number is only feasible in the high-symmetry environment provided by the An-MOFs. This category of MOFs not only demonstrates autoluminescence (4.16 × 104 counts per second per gram) but also portends a wide-bandgap (2.84 eV) semiconducting property with implications for a multitude of applications such as hard radiation detection.

Abstract
The exploration of metal-doped boron clusters has a great significance in the design of high coordination number (CN) compounds. Actinide-doped boron clusters are probable candidates for achieving high CNs. In this work, we systematically explored a series of actinide metal atom (U, Np, and Pu) doped B20 boron clusters An@B20 (An = U, Np, and Pu) by global minimum structural searches and density functional theory (DFT). Each An@B20 cluster is confirmed to be a twenty-coordinate complex, which is the highest CN obtained in the chemistry of actinide-doped boron clusters so far. The predicted global minima of An@B20 are tubular structures with actinide atoms as centers, which can be considered as boron molecular drums. In An@B20, U@B20 has a relatively high symmetry of C2, while both Np@B20 and Pu@B20 exhibit C1 symmetry. Extensive bonding analysis demonstrates that An@B20 has σ and π delocalized bonding, and the U-B bonds possess a relatively higher covalency than the Np-B and Pu-B bonds, resulting in the higher formation energy of U@B20. Therefore, the covalent character of An-B bonding may be crucial for the formation of these high CN actinide-centered boron clusters. These results deepen our understanding of actinide metal doped boron clusters and provide new clues for developing stable high CN boron-based nanomaterials.

Abstract
The geometries, electronic structures and bonding of early actinide-noble gas complexes are studied computationally by density functional and wavefunction theory methods, and by ab initio molecular dynamics. AcHe183+ is confirmed as being an 18-coordinate system, with all of the He atoms accommodated in the primary coordination shell, and this record coordination number is reported for the first time for Th4+ and Th3+. For Pa and U in their group valences of 5 and 6 respectively, the largest number of coordinated He atoms is 17. For AnHe17q+ (An = Ac, q = 3; An = Th, q = 4; An = Pa, q = 5; An = U, q = 6), the average An-He binding energy increases significantly across the series, and correlates linearly with the extent of He → Anq+ charge transfer. The interatomic exchange-correlation term Vxc obtained from the interacting quantum atoms approach correlates linearly with the An-He quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules delocalization index, both indicating that covalency increases from AcHe173+ to UHe176+. The correlation energy in AnHe163+ obtained from MP2 calculations decreases in the order Pa > Th > U > Ac, the same trend found in Vxc. The most stable complexes of Ac3+ with the heavier noble gases Ar-Xe are 12 coordinate, best described as Ng12 cages encapsulating an Ac3+ ion. There is enhanced Ng → Ac3+ charge transfer as the Ng gets heavier, and Ac-Ng covalency increases.

Abstract
A cyclic dinuclear ruthenium(bda) (bda: 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxylate) complex equipped with oligo(ethylene glycol)-functionalized axial calix[4]arene ligands has been synthesized for homogenous catalytic water oxidation. This novel Ru(bda) macrocycle showed significantly increased catalytic activity in chemical and photocatalytic water oxidation compared to the archetype mononuclear reference [Ru(bda)(pic)2 ]. Kinetic investigations, including kinetic isotope effect studies, disclosed a unimolecular water nucleophilic attack mechanism of this novel dinuclear water oxidation catalyst (WOC) under the involvement of the second coordination sphere. Photocatalytic water oxidation with this cyclic dinuclear Ru complex using [Ru(bpy)3 ]Cl2 as a standard photosensitizer revealed a turnover frequency of 15.5 s-1 and a turnover number of 460. This so far highest photocatalytic performance reported for a Ru(bda) complex underlines the potential of this water-soluble WOC for artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract
The coordination number of a given element affects its behavior, and consequently, there is great interest in understanding the related chemistry, which could greatly promote the extension and development of new materials, but remains challenging. Herein, we report a new record high coordination number (CN) for actinides established in the cage-like An(BH)24 (An = Th to Cm) via using relativistic quantum chemistry methods. Analysis of U(BH)n (n = 1 to 24) confirmed these series of systems as being geometric minima, with the BH acting as a ligand located in the first shell around the uranium. In contrast, global searches revealed a low CN half-cage structure for UB24, which could be extended to the series of AnB24 materials and which prevails over the competing structural isomers, such as cages. The intrinsic geometric difference for AnB24 and An(BH)24 mainly arise from the B sp3 hybridization in borane inducing strong interactions between An 5f6d7s hybrid orbitals and B 2pz orbitals in An(BH)24 compared to that of AnB24. This fundamental trend presents a valuable insight for future experimental endeavors searching for isolable complexes with high-coordination actinide and provides details of a new structural motif of boron clusters and nanostructures.

Abstract
Herein, we have shown that La(iii), Ac(iii), Th(iii), Th(iv), Pa(iv) and U(iv) can directly bind with a maximum of 24 hydrogen atoms in M(H2)12 in the first sphere of coordination, which would be a new record in any metal-hydrogen complex investigated at the molecular level, where all the hydrogen atoms are directly connected to the central metal ion through M-η2(H2) bonds. Moreover, Ac(H2)n3+ (n = 9-12) systems satisfy the 18-electron rule.

Abstract
The stability of numerous unexpected actinium hydrides was predicted via the evolutionary algorithm USPEX. The electron-phonon interaction was investigated for the hydrogen-richest and most symmetric phases: R3̅ m-AcH10, I4/ mmm-AcH12, and P6̅ m2-AcH16. Predicted structures of actinium hydrides are consistent with all previously studied Ac-H phases and demonstrate phonon-mediated high-temperature superconductivity with TC in the range of 204-251 K for R3̅ m-AcH10 at 200 GPa and 199-241 K for P6̅ m2-AcH16 at 150 GPa, which was estimated by directly solving the Eliashberg equation. Actinium belongs to the series of d1 elements (Sc-Y-La-Ac) that form high- TC superconducting (HTSC) hydrides. Combining this observation with previous predictions of p0-HTSC hydrides (MgH6 and CaH6), we propose that p0 and d1 metals with low-lying empty orbitals tend to form phonon-mediated HTSC metal polyhydrides.

Abstract
A relation M_{SHS→LJ} between the set of nonisomorphic sticky-hard-sphere clusters M_{SHS} and the sets of local energy minima M_{LJ} of the (m,n)-Lennard-Jones potential V_{mn}^{LJ}(r)=ɛ/n-m[mr^{-n}-nr^{-m}] is established. The number of nonisomorphic stable clusters depends strongly and nontrivially on both m and n and increases exponentially with increasing cluster size N for N≳10. While the map from M_{SHS}→M_{SHS→LJ} is noninjective and nonsurjective, the number of Lennard-Jones structures missing from the map is relatively small for cluster sizes up to N=13, and most of the missing structures correspond to energetically unfavorable minima even for fairly low (m,n). Furthermore, even the softest Lennard-Jones potential predicts that the coordination of 13 spheres around a central sphere is problematic (the Gregory-Newton problem). A more realistic extended Lennard-Jones potential chosen from coupled-cluster calculations for a rare gas dimer leads to a substantial increase in the number of nonisomorphic clusters, even though the potential curve is very similar to a (6,12)-Lennard-Jones potential.
