Toward Stable Superbenzoquinone Diradicaloids

Open-shell Poly(3,4-dioxythiophene) Radical for Highly Efficient Photothermal Conversion

Open-shell organic radical semiconductor materials have received increasing attention in recent years due to their distinctive properties compared to the traditional materials with closed-shell singlet ground state. However, their poor chemical and photothermal stability in ambient conditions remains a significant challenge, primarily owing to their high reactivity with oxygen. Herein, a novel open-shell poly(3,4-dioxythiophene) radical PTTO2 is designed and readily synthesized for the first time using low-cost raw material via a straightforward BBr3-demethylation of the copolymer PTTOMe2 precursor. The open-shell character of PTTO2 is carefully studied and confirmed via the signal-silent 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum, highly enhanced electron spin resonance signal compared with PTTOMe2, as well as the ultra-wide ultraviolet-visible-near nfraredUV-vis-NIR absorption and other technologies. Interestingly, the powder of PTTO2 exhibits an extraordinary absorption range spanning from 300 to 2500 nm and can reach 274 °C under the irradiation of 1.2 W cm-2, substantially higher than the 108 °C achieved by PTTOMe2. The low-cost PTTO2 stands as one of the best photothermal conversion materials among the pure organic photothermal materials and provides a new scaffold for the design of stable non-doped open-shell polymers.

Dual Role of a Novel Heteroleptic Cu(I) Complex in Visible-Light-Driven CO2 Reduction

A novel mononuclear Cu(I) complex was synthesized via coordination with a benzoquinoxalin-2'-one-1,2,3-triazole chelating diimine and the bis[(2-diphenylphosphino)phenyl] ether (DPEPhos), to target a new and efficient photosensitizer for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The Cu(I) complex absorbs in the blue-green region of the visible spectrum, with a broad band having a maximum at 475 nm (ϵ =4500 M-1 cm-1), which is assigned to the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition from the Cu(I) to the benzoquinoxalin-2'-one moiety of the diimine. Surprisingly, photo-driven experiments for the CO2 reduction showed that this complex can undergo a photoinduced electron transfer with a sacrificial electron donor and accumulate electrons on the diimine backbone. Photo-driven experiments in a CO2 atmosphere revealed that this complex can not only act as a photosensitizer, when combined with an Fe(III)-porphyrin, but can also selectively produce CO from CO2. Thus, owing to its charge-accumulation properties, the non-innocent benzoquinoxalin-2-one based ligand enabled the development of the first copper(I)-based photocatalyst for CO2 reduction.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Analogues of Wittig Hydrocarbon

N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) analogues of Wittig hydrocarbon, [(NHC)(Stil)(NHC)] (3a-c) (NHC = SIPr (1a) = C[N(Dipp)CH2]2, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3; IPr (1b) = C[N(Dipp)CH]2; Me-IPr (1c) = C[N(Dipp)CMe]2 and Stil = C6H4CHCHC6H4) have been reported as crystalline solids. 3a-c are prepared by two-electron reductions of the corresponding bis-1,3-imidazoli(ni)um bromides [(NHC)(Stil)NHC)](Br)2 (2a-c) with KC8 in >94 % yields. 2a-c are accessible by the nickel catalyzed direct C-C coupling of NHCs (1a-c) with (E)-4,4'-dibromostilbene. One-electron oxidation of 3a,b yields the corresponding radical cations [(NHC)(Stil)NHC)]B(C6F5)4 4a,b. All compounds have been characterized by UV-Vis/NMR/EPR spectroscopy as well as 2a, 3a, and 3b by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The electronic structures of representative systems have been analyzed by quantum chemical calculations.

Graphite-like Charge Storage Mechanism in a 2D π-d Conjugated Metal-Organic Framework Revealed by Stepwise Magnetic Monitoring

Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) fully π-d conjugated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely employed as active materials of secondary batteries; however, the origin of their high charge storage capacity is still unknown. Some reports have proposed a mechanism by assuming the formation of multiple radicals on one organic ligand, although there is no firm evidence for such a mechanism, which would run counter to the resonance theory. In this work, we utilized various magnetometric techniques to monitor the formation and concentration of paramagnetic species during the electrochemical process of 2D π-d conjugated Cu-THQ MOF (THQ = tetrahydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone). The spin concentration of the fully reduced (discharged 1.5 V) electrode was estimated to be around only 0.1 spin-1/2 per CuO₄ unit, which is much lower than that of the expected "diradical" form. More interestingly, a significant elevation of the temperature-independent paramagnetic term was simultaneously observed, which indicates the presence of delocalized π electrons in this discharged state. Such results were corroborated by first-principles density functional theory calculations and the electrochemically active density of states, which reveal the microscopic mechanism of the charge storage in the Cu-THQ MOF. Hence, a graphite-like charge storage mechanism, where the π-electron band accepts/donates electrons during the charge/discharge process, was suggested to explain the excessive charge storage of Cu-THQ. This graphite-like charge storage mechanism revealed by magnetic studies can be readily generalized to other π-d conjugated MOFs.

Diamidocarbene-Based Thiele and Tschitschibabin Hydrocarbons: Carbonyl Functionalized Kekulé Diradicaloids

Herein, we report diamidocarbene (DAC)-based Thiele and Tschitschibabin hydrocarbons, diradicaloids that contain four carbonyl/amido functional groups. The impact of two different π-conjugated spacers, p-phenylene vs p,p'-biphenylene, has been realized. The quantum chemical calculations suggest diamidocarbene (DAC)-based Thiele hydrocarbon (p-phenylene bridged) closed-shell singlet is the ground state, whereas for the diamidocarbene (DAC)-based Tschitschibabin hydrocarbon (p,p'-biphenylene bridged), open-shell singlet is the ground state. The influence of two different π-conjugated spacers also has been reflected in their UV-vis spectra. To gain more information on the diamidocarbene (DAC)-based Thiele and Tschitschibabin hydrocarbons, we have also carried out cyclic voltammetry investigations along with UV-vis-NIR-spectroelectrochemical studies of their corresponding 2-e oxidized product.

Dicyclopentaannelated Hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes with a Singlet Biradical Ground State

Synthesis of two dicyclopentaannelated hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (PHBC) regioisomers was carried out, using nonplanar oligoaryl precursors with fluorenyl groups: mPHBC 8 with two pentagons in the "meta"-configuration was obtained as a stable molecule, while its structural isomer with the "para"-configuration, pPHBC 16, could be generated and characterized only in situ due to its high chemical reactivity. Both PHBCs exhibit low energy gaps, as reflected by UV-vis-NIR absorption and electrochemical measurements. They also show open-shell singlet ground states according to electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The use of fully benzenoid HBC as a bridging moiety leads to significant singlet biradical characters (y₀ ) of 0.72 and 0.96 for mPHBC 8 and pPHBC 16, respectively, due to the strong rearomatization tendency of the HBC π-system; these values are among the highest for planar carbon-centered biradical molecules. The incorporation of fully unsaturated pentagons strongly perturbs the aromaticity of the parent HBC and makes the constituted benzene rings less aromatic or antiaromatic. These results illustrate the high impact of cyclopentaannelation on the electronic structures of fully benzenoid polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and open up a new avenue towards open-shell PAHs with prominent singlet biradical characters.

Quinoidal Azaacenes: 99 % Diradical Character

Quinoidal azaacenes with almost pure diradical character (y=0.95 to y=0.99) were synthesized. All compounds exhibit paramagnetic behavior investigated by EPR and NMR spectroscopy, and SQUID measurements, revealing thermally populated triplet states with an extremely low-energy gap ΔEST' of 0.58 to 1.0 kcal mol-1 . The species are persistent in solution (half-life≈14-21 h) and in the solid state they are stable for weeks.

CAAC-Based Thiele and Schlenk Hydrocarbons

Diradicals have been of tremendous interest for over a century ever since the first reports of p- and m-phenylene-bridged diphenylmethylradicals in 1904 by Thiele and 1915 by Schlenk. Reported here are the first examples of cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) analogues of Thiele's hydrocarbon, a Kekulé diradical, and Schlenk's hydrocarbon, a non-Kekulé diradical, without using CAAC as a precursor. The CAAC analogue of Thiele's hydrocarbon has a singlet ground state, whereas the CAAC analogue of Schlenk's hydrocarbon contains two unpaired electrons. The latter forms a dimer, by an intermolecular double head-to-tail dimerization. This straightforward synthetic methodology is modular and can be extended for the generation of redox-active organic compounds.

Luminescent Tetranuclear Gold(I) Dibenzo[g,p]chrysene Derivatives: Effect of the Environment on Photophysical Properties

A new 2,7,10,15-tetraethynyldibenzo[g,p]chrysene ligand (1) and two tetranuclear gold(I) derivatives containing PPh₃ (3) and PMe₃ (4) phosphines were synthesized and characterized by ¹H and ³¹P NMR, IR spectroscopy, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The compounds were studied in order to analyze the effect of the introduction of gold(I) on the supramolecular aggregation and photophysical properties. Absorption and emission spectra displayed broad bands due to the establishment of π π interactions as an indication of intermolecular contacts and the formation of aggregates. A decrease of the recorded quantum yield (QY) of the gold(I) derivatives was observed compared to the uncomplexed ligand. The introduction of the complexes into poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) and Zeonex 480R matrixes was analyzed, and an increase of the measured QY of 4 in Zeonex was observed. No phosphorescent emission was detected.

Functionalized Contorted Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by a One-Step Cyclopentannulation and Regioselective Triflyloxylation

The oxidative cyclodehydrogenation (often named the Scholl reaction) is still a powerful synthetic tool to construct even larger polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by multiple biaryl bond formations without the necessity of prior installation of reacting functional groups. Scholl-type reactions are usually very selective although the resulting products bear sometimes some surprises, such as the formation of five-membered instead of six-membered rings or the unexpected migration of aryl moieties. There are a few examples, where chlorinated byproducts were found when FeCl₃ was used as reagent. To our knowledge, the direct functionalization of PAHs during Scholl-type cyclization by triflyloxylation has not been observed. Herein we describe the synthesis of functionalized PAHs by the formation of five-membered rings and a regioselective triflyloxylation in one step. The triflyloxylated PAHs can be used as reactants for further transformation to even larger contorted PAHs.

A BODIPY-Bridged Bisphenoxyl Diradicaloid: Solvent-Dependent Diradical Character and Physical Properties

We report a new boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-bridged bisphenoxyl diradicaloid (2), which showed closed-shell diamagnetic character in less polar solvents such as dichloromethane but open-shell diradical character with paramagnetic activity in the very polar solvent N,N-dimethylformamide. X-ray crystallographic analysis of 2 revealed an anti-parallel stacked dimer structure via intermolecular dipole-dipole interaction, and the observed solvent-dependent diradical character can be explained by the different dihedral angles between the phenoxyl units and the BODIPY bridge, and structural flexibility of the molecule in different solvents. Compound 2 also exhibited solvent-dependent optical and electrochemical properties.

Regioselective Bromination and Functionalization of Dibenzo[hi,st]ovalene as Highly Luminescent Nanographene with Zigzag Edges

Dibenzo[hi,st]ovalene (DBOV) is a nanographene with a combination of zigzag and armchair edges, consisting of 38 sp² carbons. Excellent optical properties with strong red emission have been demonstrated. Here we report the regioselective bromination of DBOV bearing two mesityl groups (DBOV-Mes) by treatment with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) under mild conditions. The dibrominated DBOV was further subjected to transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, that is, Suzuki and Sonogashira coupling, demonstrating the edge-decoration of DBOV with different functional groups. Notably, DBOVs arylated at the bay regions showed intense red emission and enhanced fluorescence quantum yields of up to 0.97. Amphoteric reduction and oxidation behavior were observed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. Chemical oxidation to stable radical cation species was also demonstrated, followed by reduction back to their neutral species.

Dimethylcethrene: A Chiroptical Diradicaloid Photoswitch

We describe the synthesis and properties of 13,14-dimethylcethrene, a prototype of a chiral diradicaloid photochemical switch that can be transformed reversibly via conrotatory electrocyclization to its more stable closed form by light (630 nm) or heat and back to its open form by light (365 nm). This system illustrates how the chemical reactivity of a diradicaloid molecule can be translated into a switching function, which alters substantially all electronic parameters, namely, the HOMO-LUMO and the singlet-triplet (ST) energy gaps, and the degree of helical twist. As a result, distinct changes in the optical and chiroptical properties of this system were observed, which allowed us to monitor the switching process by a variety of spectroscopic techniques, including NMR, UV-vis, and CD. In comparison to the previously reported parent molecule cethrene, this system benefits from two methyl substituents installed in the fjord region, which account for the stability of the closed form against oxidation and racemization. The methyl substituents increase the ST energy gap of 13,14-dimethylcethrene by ∼4 kcal mol-1 in comparison to cethrene. Our DFT calculations reveal that the larger ST gap is a result of electronic and geometric effects of the methyl substituents and show the potential of related systems to act as magnetic switches at room temperature.

Kekulé diradicaloids derived from a classical N-heterocyclic carbene

The direct double carbenylation of 1,4-diiodobenzene and 4,4'-dibromobiphenyl with a classical N-heterocyclic carbene, SIPr (1) (SIPr = :C{N(2,6-iPr2C6H3)}2CH2CH2), by means of nickel catalysis gives rise to 1,3-imidazolinium salts [(SIPr)(C6H4)(SIPr)](I)2 (2) and [(SIPr)(C6H4)2(SIPr)](Br)2 (3) as off-white solids. Two-electron reduction of 2 and 3 with KC8 cleanly yields Kekulé diradicaloid compounds [(SIPr)(C6H4)(SIPr)] (4) and [(SIPr)(C6H4)2(SIPr)] (5), respectively, as crystalline solids. Structural parameters and DFT as well as CASSCF calculations suggest the closed-shell singlet ground state for 4 and 5. Calculations reveal a very low singlet-triplet energy gap ΔES-T for 5 (10.7 kcal mol-1), while ΔES-T for 4 (29.1 kcal mol-1) is rather large.

Stable Nitrogen-Centered Bis(imino)rylene Diradicaloids

The synthesis of stable open-shell singlet diradicaloids is critical for their practical material application. So far, most reported examples are based on carbon-centered radicals, which are intrinsically reactive, and there are very few examples of stable nitrogen-centered diradicaloids. In this full paper, a series of soluble and stable bis(imino)rylenes up to octarylene were synthesized on the basis of newly developed dibromorylene intermediates. It was found that from hexarylene onward, these quinoidal rylenes showed open-shell singlet ground states and could be thermally populated to paramagnetic triplet aminyl diradicals. They are stable due to efficient spin delocalization onto the rylene backbone as well as kinetic blocking of the aminyl sites by the bulky and electron-deficient 2,4,6-trichlorophenyl groups. They exhibited very different electronic structures, diradical character, excited-state dynamics, one-photon absorption, two-photon absorption, and electrochemical properties from their respective aromatic rylene counterparts. These bis(imino)rylenes represent a rare class of stable, neutral, nitrogen-centered aminyl diradicaloids.

From open-shell singlet diradicaloids to polyradicaloids

In this Feature Article, we highlight our recent efforts toward stable open-shell singlet diradicaloids and polyradicaloids. A brief review on the historical works in the area is introduced first, followed by discussion on the fundamental electronic and physical properties of open-shell singlet diradicaloids. Then, the structure-diradical character relationships based on our recently developed diradicaloids are presented. Next, the challenges and solutions toward stable polyradicaloids and 3D π-conjugated diradicaloids are discussed. Finally, their preliminary material applications are introduced and a perspective view of the area is given.
