Atomic Layer Deposition of Iron Sulfide and Its Application as a Catalyst in the Hydrogenation of Azobenzenes

2D FeSx Nanosheets by Atomic Layer Deposition: Electrocatalytic Properties for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

2-dimensional FeS_x nanosheets of different sizes are synthesized by applying different numbers of atomic layer deposition (ALD) cycles on TiO₂ nanotube layers and graphite sheets as supporting materials and used as an electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The electrochemical results confirm electrocatalytic activity in alkaline media with outstanding long-term stability (>65 h) and enhanced catalytic activity, reflected by a notable drop in the initial HER overpotential value (up to 26 %). By using a range of characterization techniques, the origin of the enhanced catalytic activity was found to be caused by the synergistic interplay between in situ morphological and compositional changes in the 2D FeS_x nanosheets during HER. Under the application of a cathodic potential in alkaline media, the as-synthesized 2D FeS_x nanosheets transformed into iron oxyhydroxide-iron oxysulfide core-shell nanoparticles, which exhibited a higher active catalytic surface and newly created Fe-based HER catalytic sites.

Sulfidated microscale zero-valent iron/reduced graphene oxide composite (S-mZVI/rGO) for enhanced degradation of trichloroethylene: The role of hydrogen spillover

Atomic hydrogen (H*) has long been thought to play an important role in the dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) by carbon-supported zero-valent iron (ZVI), which offers an alternative pathway for TCE dechlorination. Herein, we demonstrate that the reductive dechlorination of TCE by sulfidated microscale ZVI (S-mZVI) can be further enhanced by promoting the formation of H* through the introduction of reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The completely degradation of 10 mg/L TCE can be achieved by S-mZVI/rGO within 24 h, which was 3.3 times faster than that of S-mZVI. The change in the distribution of TCE degradation products over time suggests that the introduction of rGO leads to a change in the dechlorination pathway. The percentage of ethane in the final products of TCE degradation by S-mZVI/rGO was 34.3 %, while that of S-mZVI was only 21.9 %. The electrochemical tests confirmed the occurrence of hydrogen spillover in the S-mZVI/rGO composite, which promoted the reductive dechlorination of TCE by H*. Although the S-mZVI/rGO composite had stronger hydrogen evolution propensity than S-mZVI, the S-mZVI/rGO composite still exhibited higher electron utilization efficiency than S-mZVI thanks to the increased utilization of hydrogen.

Atomic-Layer-Deposition-Based 2D Transition Metal Chalcogenides: Synthesis, Modulation, and Applications

Transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) are a large family of 2D materials with different properties, and are promising candidates for a wide range of applications such as nanoelectronics, sensors, energy conversion, and energy storage. In the research of new materials, the development and investigation of industry-compatible synthesis techniques is of key importance. In this respect, it is important to study 2D TMC materials synthesized by the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique, which is widely applied in industries. In addition to the synthesis of 2D TMCs, ALD is used to modulate the characteristic of 2D TMCs such as their carrier density and morphology. So far, the improvement of thin film uniformity without oxidation and the synthesis of low-dimensional nanomaterials on 2D TMCs have been the research focus. Herein, the synthesis and modulation of 2D TMCs by ALD is described, and the characteristics of ALD-based TMCs used in nanoelectronics, sensors, and energy applications are discussed.

Fe/S-Catalyzed synthesis of 2-benzoylbenzoxazoles and 2-quinolylbenzoxazoles via redox condensation of o-nitrophenols with acetophenones and methylquinolines

An Fe/S catalyst generated in situ from FeCl₂·4H₂O and elemental sulfur S₈ in the presence of a tertiary amine as a base was found to catalyze efficiently a 6e^- redox condensation of o-nitrophenols with acetophenones and methylquinolines. The condensed products 2-benzoylbenzoxazoles and 2-quinolylbenzoxazoles were obtained in reasonable yields with water as the only byproduct at a temperature as low as 80 °C.

Self-Assembly of Large Magnetic Nanoparticles in Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Linear Diblock Copolymer Films

The development of diblock copolymer (DBC) nanocomposite films containing magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) with diameters (D) over 20 nm is a challenging task. To host large iron oxide NPs (Fe₃O₄, D = 27 ± 0.6 nm), an ultrahigh molecular weight (UHMW) linear DBC polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) is used as a template in the present work. Due to hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic acid ligands of the NPs and the ester groups in PMMA, the NPs show an affinity to the PMMA block. The localization of the NPs inside the DBC is investigated as a function of the NP concentration. At low NP concentrations, NPs are located preferentially at the interface between PS and PMMA domains to minimize the interfacial tension caused by the strong segregation strength of the UHMW DBC. At high NP concentrations (≥10 wt %), chain-like NP aggregates (a head-to-tail orientation) are observed in the PMMA domains, resulting in a change of the morphology from sphere to ellipsoid for part of the PMMA domains. Magnetic properties of the hybrid films are probed via superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. All hybrid films show ferrimagnetism and are promising for potential applications in magnetic data storage.

Self-Assembly in ultrahigh molecular weight sphere-forming diblock copolymer thin films under strong confinement

Ultrahigh molecular weight (UHMW) diblock copolymers (DBCs) have emerged as a promising template for fabricating large-sized nanostructures. Therefore, it is of high significance to systematically study the influence of film thickness and solvent vapor annealing (SVA) on the structure evolution of UHMW DBC thin films. In this work, spin coating of an asymmetric linear UHMW polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) DBC is used to fabricate thin films, which are spherically structured with an inter-domain distance larger than 150 nm. To enhance the polymer chain mobility and facilitate approaching equilibrium nanostructures, SVA is utilized as a post-treatment of the spin coated films. With increasing film thickness, a local hexagonal packing of PMMA half-spheres on the surface can be obtained, and the order is improved at larger thickness, as determined by grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). Additionally, the films with locally hexagonal packed half-spherical morphology show a poor order-order-poor order transition upon SVA, indicating the realization of ordered structure using suitable SVA parameters.

Hydrogenation of Functionalized Nitroarenes Catalyzed by Single-Phase Pyrite FeS2 Nanoparticles on N,S-Codoped Porous Carbon

Catalytic hydrogenation of nitroarenes is an industrially very important and environmentally friendly process for the production of anilines; however, highly chemoselective reduction of nitroarenes decorated with one or more reducible groups in a nitroarene molecule remains a challenge. Herein, a novel hybrid non-noble iron-based nanocatalyst (named as FeS₂ /NSC) was developed, which was prepared from biomass as C and N source together with inexpensive Fe(NO₃ )₃ as Fe source through high-temperature pyrolysis in a straightforward and cost-effective procedure. Comprehensive characterization revealed that single-phase pyrite FeS₂ nanoparticles with precisely defined composition and uniform size were homogeneously dispersed on N,S-codoped porous carbon with large specific surface area, hierarchical porous channels, and high pore volume. The resultant catalyst FeS₂ /NSC demonstrated good catalytic activity for hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarenes with good tolerance of various functional groups in water as a sustainable and green solvent. Compared with bulk pyrite FeS₂ and other non-noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts reported in the literature, a remarkably enhanced activity was observed under mild reaction conditions. More importantly, FeS₂ /NSC displayed exclusive chemoselectivity for the reduction of nitro groups for nitroarenes bearing varying readily reducible groups.

The first atomic layer deposition process for FexN films

An efficient process for ALD FexN films was reported in this study for the first time. Bis(N,N'-di-tert-butylacetamidinato)iron(ii) (Fe(tBu-amd)2) and anhydrous hydrazine (N2H4) were used as reactants. Ideal self-limiting growth behavior was confirmed through the effect of the reactant dose and deposition cycle number on the growth rate (film thickness). Besides, these pure FexN films were able to grow into trench substrates with an aspect ratio of 2.5 : 1 conformally and uniformly, highlighting the potential of this ALD process for complex 3D or porous structures. The possible mechanism was proposed by investigating the reaction between Fe(tBu-amd)2 and N2H4 in toluene, and performing first-principles calculations. Our ALD process is expected to promote the development of FexN-based nanoengineering for its broad applications.

Synthesis of Thin-Film Metal Pyrites by an Atomic Layer Deposition Approach

Late 3d transition metal disulfides (MS₂ , M=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) can crystallize in an interesting cubic-pyrite structure, in which all the metal cations are in a low-spin electronic configuration with progressive increase of the e_g electrons for M=Fe-Zn. These metal pyrite compounds exhibit very diverse and intriguing electrical and magnetic properties, which have stimulated considerable attention for various applications, especially in cutting-edge energy conversion and storage technologies. The synthesis of the metal pyrites is certainly very important, because highly controllable, reproducible, and reliable synthesis methods are virtually essential for both fundamental materials research and practical engineering. In this Concept, a new approach of (plasma-assisted) atomic layer deposition (ALD) to synthesize the thin-film metal pyrites (FeS₂ , CoS₂ , NiS₂ ) is introduced. The ALD synthesis approach allows for atomic-precision control over film composition and thickness, excellent film uniformity and conformality, and superior process reproducibility, and therefore it is of high promise for uniformly conformal metal pyrite thin-film coatings on complex 3D structures in general. Details and implications of this ALD approach are discussed in this Concept, mainly from a conceptual perspective, and it is envisioned that, with this new ALD synthesis approach, a significant amount of new studies will be enabled on both the fundamentals, and novel applications of the metal pyrite materials.

A Novel Method for the Metallization of 3D Silicon Induced by Metastable Copper Nanoparticles

The development of efficient copper deposition processes in high-aspect-ratio silicon structures is still a key technological issue for the microelectronic industry. We describe here a new process for the deposition of copper thin films in three-dimensional (3D) structures induced by the decomposition of a copper amidinate precursor in solution under a moderate H₂ pressure. The reduction of a metal precursor under soft conditions (3 bar, 110 °C) affords the preparation of a high-purity, conformal metallic layer. We unveil a novel deposition mechanism driven by colloidal copper nanoparticles (NPs) in solution that behave as a reservoir of metastable metallic NPs that eventually condense as a solid film on all immersed surfaces. The film growth process is characterized by time-resolved analyses of the NPs in the colloidal state (nuclear magnetic resonance NMR and UV-vis spectra) and of the NPs and metallic layer on substrates (transmission electron microscopy TEM, and scanning electron microscopy SEM). Major deposition stages of this process are proposed and the conformal metallization of 3D silicon substrates is successfully achieved. This method is transposable to other metallic layers such as silver or nickel.

Inorganic Surface Coating with Fast Wetting-Dewetting Transitions for Liquid Manipulations

Liquid manipulation is a fundamental issue for microfluidics and miniaturized sensors. Fast wetting-state transitions by optical methods have proven being efficient for liquid manipulations by organic surface coatings, however rarely been achieved by using inorganic coatings. Here, we report a fast optical-induced wetting-state transition surface achieved by inorganic coating, enabling tens of second transitions for a wetting-dewetting cycle, shortened from an hour, as typically reported. Here, we demonstrate a gravity-driven microfluidic reactor and switch it to a mixer after a second-step exposure in a minimum of within 80 s of UV exposure. The fast wetting-dewetting transition surfaces enable the fast switchable or erasable smart surfaces for water collection, miniature chemical reaction, or sensing systems by using inorganic surface coatings.

Atomic Layer Deposition of Nickel Carbide from a Nickel Amidinate Precursor and Hydrogen Plasma

A new atomic layer deposition (ALD) process for depositing nickel carbide (Ni₃C _x) thin films is reported, using bis( N, N'-di- tert-butylacetamidinato)nickel(II) and H₂ plasma. The process shows a good layer-by-layer film growth behavior with a saturated film growth rate of 0.039 nm/cycle for a fairly wide process temperature window from 75 to 250 °C. Comprehensive material characterizations are performed on the Ni₃C _x films deposited at 95 °C with various H₂ plasma pulse lengths from 5 to 12 s, and no appreciable difference is found with the change of the plasma pulse length. The deposited Ni₃C _x films are fairly pure, smooth, and conductive, and the x in the nominal formula of Ni₃C _x is approximately 0.7. The ALD Ni₃C _x films are polycrystalline with a rhombohedral Ni₃C crystal structure, and the films are free of nanocrystalline graphite or amorphous carbon. Last, we demonstrate that, by using this ALD process, highly uniform Ni₃C _x films can be conformally deposited into deep narrow trenches with an aspect ratio as high as 20:1, which thereby highlights the broad and promising applicability of this process for conformal Ni₃C _x film coatings on complex high-aspect-ratio 3D architectures in general.

Vx3-Functionalized Alumina Nanoparticles Assisted Enrichment of Ubiquitinated Proteins from Cancer Cells for Enhanced Cancer Immunotherapy

A simple and effective strategy was developed to enrich ubiquitinated proteins (UPs) from cancer cell lysate using the α-Al₂O₃ nanoparticles covalently linked with ubiquitin binding protein (Vx3) (denoted as α-Al₂O₃-Vx3) via a chemical linker. The functionalized α-Al₂O₃-Vx3 showed long-term stability and high efficiency for the enrichment of UPs from cancer cell lysates. Flow cytometry analysis results indicated dendritic cells (DCs) could more effectively phagocytize the covalently linked α-Al₂O₃-Vx3-UPs than the physical mixture of α-Al₂O₃ and Vx3-UPs (α-Al₂O₃/Vx3-UPs). Laser confocal microscopy images revealed that α-Al₂O₃-Vx3-UPs localized within the autophagosome of DCs, which then cross-presented α-Al₂O₃-Vx3-UPs to CD8⁺ T cells in an autophagosome-related cross-presentation pathway. Furthermore, α-Al₂O₃-Vx3-UPs enhanced more potent antitumor immune response and antitumor efficacy than α-Al₂O₃/cell lysate or α-Al₂O₃/Vx3-UPs. This work highlights the potential of using the Vx3 covalently linked α-Al₂O₃ as a simple and effective platform to enrich UPs from cancer cells for the development of highly efficient therapeutic cancer vaccines.
