Abstract
Five-membered carbocycles are ubiquitously found in natural products, pharmaceuticals, and other classes of organic compounds. Within this category, cyclopentenes deserve special attention due to their prevalence as targets and as well as key intermediates for synthesizing more complex molecules. Herein, we offer an overview summarizing some significant recent advances in the catalytic assembly of this structural motif. A great variety of synthetic methodologies and strategies are covered, including transition metal-catalyzed or organocatalyzed processes. Both inter- and intramolecular transformations are documented. On this ground, our expertise in the application of C-H functionalization reactions oriented towards the formation of this ring and its subsequent selective functionalization is embedded.

Abstract
The trapping of the elusive vinylogous position of a vinyl carbene with an aliphatic C(sp3 )-H bond has been achieved for the first time during a silver-catalyzed carbene/alkyne metathesis (CAM) process. A Tpx -containing silver complex first promotes the generation of a donor-acceptor silver carbene which triggers CAM, generating a subsequent donor-donor vinyl silver carbene species, which then undergoes a selective vinylogous C(sp3 )-H bond insertion, leading to the synthesis of a new family of benzoazepines. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations unveil the reaction mechanism, which allows proposing that the C-H bond insertion reaction takes place in a stepwise manner, with the hydrogen shift being the rate determining step.

Abstract
We herein report the first example of an iminyl-radical-mediated formal 1,3-HAT/radical coupling cascade of vinyl azides leading to the synthesis of tetrasubstituted gem-disulfonyl enamines. It is possible to employ a variety of vinyl azides and sulfinate salt coupling elements without sacrificing effectiveness and scalability. The combination of experimental studies and DFT calculations showed that this reaction proceeds via a radical addition/formal 1,3-HAT/radical coupling mechanism.

Abstract
An oxocarbenium-olefin cross metathesis occurs during Brønsted acid catalyzed reactions of 1H-isochromene acetals with vinyl diazo compounds. Formally a carbonyl-alkene [2 + 2]-cyclization between isobenzopyrylium ions and the vinyl group of vinyl diazoesters, the retro-[2 + 2] cycloaddition produces a tethered alkene and a vinyl diazonium ion that, upon loss of dinitrogen, undergoes a highly selective carbocationic cascade rearrangements to diverse products whose formation is controlled by reactant substituents. Polysubstituted benzobicyclo[3.3.1]oxocines, benzobicyclo[3.2.2]oxepines, benzobicyclopropane, and naphthalenes are obtained in good to excellent yields and selectivities. Furthermore, isotopic tracer and control experiments shed light on the oxocarbenium-olefin metathesis/rearrangement process as well as on the origin of the interesting substituent-dependent selectivity.

Abstract
Vinyldiazo reagents were developed as the radical acceptors in a visible-light-promoted sequential radical cyclization reaction, providing a mechanistically distinct pathway to achieve (3 + 3) cyclization. Using N-aryl chlorodifluoromethyl alkynyl ketoimines as the radical precursors, the reaction allows the introduction of a fluorine atom to the acridine skeleton during the construction of both the pyridine and benzene motifs from acyclic building blocks. The resulting 4-fluoroacridines exhibited pronounced fluorescent properties in the solid state.

Abstract
The direct Friedel-Crafts-type coupling and dedinitrogenation reactions of vinyldiazo compounds with aromatic compounds using a metal-free strategy are described. This Brønsted acid catalyzed method is efficient for the formation of α-diazo β-carbocations (vinyldiazonium ions), vinyl carbocations, and allylic or homoallylic carbocation species via vinyldiazo compounds. By choosing suitable nucleophilic reagents to selectively capture these intermediates, both trisubstituted α,β-unsaturated esters, β-indole-substituted diazo esters, and dienes are obtained with good to high yields and selectivity. Experimental insights implicate a reaction mechanism involving the selective protonation of vinyldiazo compounds and the subsequent release of dinitrogen to form vinyl cations that undergo intramolecular 1,3- and 1,4- hydride transfer processes as well as fragmentation.

Abstract
Gold-catalysis has enabled new synthetic opportunities in the chemistry of vinyldiazo compounds. Herein, we report the gold-catalyzed reaction of stabilized vinyldiazo compounds with pinacol alkenylboronates to provide boryl-functionalized cyclopentene derivatives through a formal [3+2] carbocycloaddition reaction, a very unusual pathway in alkenylboronate chemistry. This reaction proceeds with high regio- and stereoselectivity. The synthetic usefulness of the resulting borylated cyclopentene derivatives toward the synthesis of densely functionalized cyclopentanoids is also demonstrated.

Abstract
Indium trichloride catalyzes the reaction of vinyl azides with unfunctionalized indoles to give vinyl indoles. This is the first example of displacement of the azide group by a carbon nucleophile while preserving the vinyl function. The protocol employs very mild reaction conditions and offers excellent yields of diverse 3-vinyl indoles. It is amenable to gram scale. Access to a library of 3,3'-bis(indolyl)methanes through condensation of vinyl azides with 2 equiv of an indole is demonstrated.

Abstract
Vinyl azides, bearing conjugated azide and alkene functional groups, have been recognized as versatile building blocks in organic synthesis. In general vinyl azides act as 3-atom (CCN) synthons through the fast release of molecular nitrogen and have been extensively utilized in the construction of structurally diverse N-heterocycles. Keeping the azide moiety intact in organic transformations to synthesis chiral azides is an important but challenging task. Herein, we report an enantioselective copper(II)/BOX-catalyzed cycloaddition of vinyl azides, generating diverse chiral cyclic azides. α-Aryl substituted vinyl azides react with unsaturated keto esters through an inverse-electron-demand hetero-Diels-Alder reaction to afford chiral azido dihydropyrans with excellent enatioselectivities. In contrast, cyclohexenyl azides undergo a diastereo- and enantio-selective Diels-Alder reaction giving important azido octahydronaphthalenes with three continuous stereogenic centers. Notable features of these reactions include a very broad scope, mild reaction conditions and 100% atom economy. Vinyl azides generally act as 3-atom synthon through the fast release of molecular nitrogen, whereas keeping the azide group intact is more challenging. Here, the authors show a copper-catalyzed enantioselective cycloaddition of two types of vinyl azides generating a diverse pool of valuable chiral cyclic azides.

Abstract
Organic azides are useful synthetic intermediates, which demonstrate broad reactivity. Unlike most organic azides, allylic azides can spontaneously rearrange to form a mixture of isomers. This rearrangement has been named the Winstein rearrangement. Using allylic azides can result in low yields and azide racemization in some synthetic contexts due to the Winstein rearrangement. Effort has been made to understand the mechanism of the Winstein rearrangement and to take advantage of this process. Several guiding principles can be used to identify which azides will produce a mixture of isomers and which will resist rearrangement. Selective reaction conditions can be used to differentiate the azide isomers in a dynamic manner. This review covers all aspects of allylic azides including their synthesis, their reactivity, the mechanism of the Winstein rearrangement, and reactions that can selectively elaborate an azide isomer. This review covers the literature from Winstein's initial report to early 2019.

Abstract
A novel and efficient synthesis of diversely functionalized cyclopentene derivatives through the multicomponent reactions of 1,2-allenic ketones with 4-chloroacetoacetate and malononitrile/cyanoacetate under mild and metal-free conditions is presented. Mechanistically, the formation of title compounds involves a cascade process including nucleophilic substitution, Michael addition and intramolecular aldol type reaction. Interestingly, when 1-phenyl allenic ketones bearing electron-donating groups on the phenyl ring were reacted with 4-chloroacetoacetate and cyanoacetate, methylenecyclo-pentanes, the regioisomer of cyclopentenes, were formed with good selectivity and high efficiency.

Abstract
A direct (3+2) cycloaddition between alkenes and vinyl diazo reagents using either Cr or Ru photocatalysis is described. The intermediacy of a radical cation species enables a nucleophilic interception by vinyl diazo compounds, a departure from their traditional electrophilic behavior. A variety of cyclopentenes are synthesized using this method, and experimental insights implicate a direct cycloaddition instead of a cyclopropanation/rearrangement process.
