Fifty Shades of Phenanthroline: Synthesis Strategies to Functionalize 1,10-Phenanthroline in All Positions

1,10-Phenanthroline (phen) is one of the most popular ligands ever used in coordination chemistry due to its strong affinity for a wide range of metals with various oxidation states. Its polyaromatic structure provides robustness and rigidity, leading to intriguing features in numerous fields (luminescent coordination scaffolds, catalysis, supramolecular chemistry, sensors, theranostics, etc.). Importantly, phen offers eight distinct positions for functional groups to be attached, showcasing remarkable versatility for such a simple ligand. As a result, phen has become a landmark molecule for coordination chemists, serving as a must-use ligand and a versatile platform for designing polyfunctional arrays. The extensive use of substituted phenanthroline ligands with different metal ions has resulted in a diverse array of complexes tailored for numerous applications. For instance, these complexes have been utilized as sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells, as luminescent probes modified with antibodies for biomaterials, and in the creation of elegant supramolecular architectures like rotaxanes and catenanes, exemplified by Sauvage's Nobel Prize-winning work in 2016. In summary, phen has found applications in almost every facet of chemistry. An intriguing aspect of phen is the specific reactivity of each pair of carbon atoms ([2,9], [3,8], [4,7], and [5,6]), enabling the functionalization of each pair with different groups and leading to polyfunctional arrays. Furthermore, it is possible to differentiate each position in these pairs, resulting in non-symmetrical systems with tremendous versatility. In this Review, the authors aim to compile and categorize existing synthetic strategies for the stepwise polyfunctionalization of phen in various positions. This comprehensive toolbox will aid coordination chemists in designing virtually any polyfunctional ligand. The survey will encompass seminal work from the 1950s to the present day. The scope of the Review will be limited to 1,10-phenanthroline, excluding ligands with more intracyclic heteroatoms or fused aromatic cycles. Overall, the primary goal of this Review is to highlight both old and recent synthetic strategies that find applicability in the mentioned applications. By doing so, the authors hope to establish a first reference for phenanthroline synthesis, covering all possible positions on the backbone, and hope to inspire all concerned chemists to devise new strategies that have not yet been explored.

Structure-activity strategies for mechanically responsive fluorescent materials: a molecular perspective

Mechanical response luminescence (MRL) describes the photophysical properties triggered by mechanical stimulation. Usually, MRL can be regulated by intermolecular interactions, molecular conformation or molecular packing, to achieve the desirable optical properties. Herein, at the molecular level, this review covers the factors that influence mechanically responsive fluorescent materials, involving the single- or multifactorial modulation of aliphatic chains, donor-receptor switch, substituent adjustment, and position isomerism. According to these factors, the structure-activity strategies can be summarized as: (i) the self-recovery of optical properties, from the final to initial state, can be regulated by introducing long alkyl chains to a fluorophore. (ii) The sensitivity of MRL materials can be controlled by modifying the donor-acceptor structure via the changed ICT (intramolecular charge transfer) and intramolecular interaction. (iii) The electronic and steric effects of substituents can affect ICT and intermolecular interactions, thereby resulting in high quantum yield and high-contrast MRL materials via changing the molecular stacking of crystalline states. (iv) Intermolecular interaction is modulated by the position isomerism of the substituents, which results in switched molecular packing for the extended response toward a wide range of stimuli. It is anticipated that the molecular mechanisms of these structure-activity relationships will serve as a significant reference for developing novel, high contrast, recyclable mechanical response luminous materials.

Benzopyrano-Fused Phenanthridine-Based Columnar Mesogens: Synthesis, Self-organization and Charge-Transport Properties

Columnar mesogens constitute a fascinating class of supramolecular nano-architectures owing to the exceptional properties induced by their self-assembling behavior. Extending the π-conjugated core in such systems by incorporating heteroatoms extensively influences their mesomorphic, photophysical properties, etc., presenting them as potential candidates for optoelectronic applications. In the present work, a series of novel nitrogen and oxygen-incorporated chromenonaphthophenanthridine-based elliptical dimers have been synthesized through tandem Pictet-Spengler cyclization followed by ipso-aromatic substitution in one-pot. Mesophase characterization has been carried out by employing POM, DSC, and X-ray diffraction studies. Photophysical properties were investigated using UV-vis and emission spectroscopy. Furthermore, the charge transport properties were analyzed by time-of-flight measurements, and the observed ambipolar mobilities were found to be of the order of 10^-3  cm²  V^-1  s^-1 . The high solubility, excellent thermal stability, self-organizing properties, and ambipolar charge transport characteristics make them promising candidates for applications in organic electronics.

Angularly fused diaza-dinaphthopyrenes: regio-selective synthesis, crystal structures and isomer-dependent mechanochromic fluorescent properties

We report a one-pot synthesis of a series of unprecedented angular-fused diaza-dinaphthopyrene isomers (1,8-DNPy and 1,6-DNPy) in high yields, which are enabled by regio-selective Bischler-Napieralski cyclization to fuse two quinolone rings either on the same or opposite faces of a pyrene core. Benefiting from the high reactivity of the 1- and 8-positions of the pyrene ring, steric effect from substitution and remarkably different dipole moments, high ring closure selectivity for the 1,8-form vs. the 1,6-form up to 6 : 1 is achieved with ease of separation. With differentiated molecular symmetry, conformation, intermolecular interactions and aromaticity, the two kinds of regio-isomers exhibit distinct single-crystal structures and optoelectronic properties. Impressively, isomer-dependent mechanochromic fluorescent properties of these 2D-azaacenes are identified, which are unique in their turn-on fluorescence feature and contrasting spectral shifts. These findings allow facile and modular access to regio-specific 2D-N-heteroarenes, which provide a way to create innovative optical sensors with improved sensitivity and fruitful fluorescent properties.

Synthesis of Nitrogen-Doped Aza-Helicenes with Chiral Optical Properties

Aza-helicenes are one of the most important series of heterohelicenes; herein, a series of novel aza-helicenes (5H, 6H, 6S, and 8S) were prepared via Bischler-Napieralski cyclization, and the interconversion dynamic process of these aza-helicenes was revealed using density functional theory calculations. The novel nitrogen-doped [6]helicene (6H) possesses a very high interconversion energy barrier of 36.0 kcal/mol. Two enantiomers of 6H were successfully resolved by high-performance liquid chromatography and showed desired chiral optical properties. 6H with chiral optical activity and lone electrons can be a potential candidate for chiral switches, which was demonstrated using the UV and circular dichroism spectra obtained upon titration with an acid and a base.

Structure-property relationships of quinoxaline-based liquid crystals

Quinoxaline derivatives with different molecular structures stabilizing liquid crystalline self-assembly are discussed in this review. This class of molecules can be systematically modified with careful molecular engineering to achieve different molecular shapes, directing them to self-assemble into various types of mesophases. The structure-property relationships of such molecules and the resultant self-assembled functional structures are of utmost importance in organic electronic devices and related applications.

Amphiphilic Diazapyrenes with Multiple Stimuli-Responsive Properties

A series of amphiphilic diazapyrenes exhibiting switchable fluorescence under the stimulus of mechanical force or water vapor are reported for the first time. Comprehensive studies of their photophysical properties in different states based on UV-Vis absorption, FL emission, FT-IR spectroscopy, and XRD analysis have revealed a stimuli-induced excimer-based sensing mechanism. The relationship between molecular structures and optical responsive properties of these diazapyrene derivatives is illustrated. Moreover, the unique fluorescent, stimuli-responsive behaviors of these diazapyrene compounds in the solid state are used to fabricate sensory films for successively and orthogonally sensing mechanical force and water vapor. In contrast to the well-established knowledge on the transformation between the pyrene monomer and excimer, our study offers valuable information about the unknown diazapyrene excimers and demonstrates their potential applications in biocompatible force sensors, data storage, and humidity sensors.

Mechanically induced single-molecule white-light emission of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) materials

Described herein is the first example of mechanically induced single-molecule white-light emission based on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) materials. The mechanism of mechanochromism is clearly disclosed by powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, infrared spectroscopy, and fluorescence up-conversion measurement, etc. 2-(2'-Hydroxyphenyl)oxazole (6b) with a herringbone packing motif exhibits a predominant keto-form emission, giving off yellowish-green fluorescence. Mechanical grinding transforms the herringbone packing motif into a brickwork packing motif, decreases the intermolecular distances, which results in an enhanced intermolecular charge-transfer interaction, and therefore changes the ESIPT dynamics, leading to an enhanced enol-form emission and white fluorescence. Herringbone-packing 6b is thermodynamically more stable than brickwork-packing 6b. Thus, the latter can convert to the former by solvent fuming or thermal annealing.

Harnessing molecular rotations in plastic crystals: a holistic view for crystal engineering of adaptive soft materials

Plastic crystals (PCs), formed by certain types of molecules or ions with reorientational freedom, offer both exceptional mechanical plasticity and long range order, hence they are attractive for many mechano-adaptable technologies. While most classic PCs belong to simple globular molecular systems, a vast number of examples in the literature with diverse geometrical (cylindrical, bent, disk, etc.) and chemical (neutral, ionic, etc.) natures have proven their wide scope and opportunities. All the recent reviews on PCs aim to provide insights into a particular application, for instance, organic plastic crystal electrolytes or ferroelectrics. This tutorial review presents a holistic view of PCs by unifying the recent excellent progress in fundamental concepts from diverse areas as well as comparing them with liquid crystals, amphidynamic crystals, ordered crystals, etc. We cover the molecular and structural origins of the unique characteristics of PCs, such as exceptional plasticity, facile reversible switching of order-to-disorder states and associated colossal heat changes, and diffusion of ions/molecules, and their attractive applications in solid electrolytes, opto-electronics, ferroeletrics, piezoelectrics, pyroelectrics, barocalorics, magnetics, nonlinear optics, and so on. The recent progress not only demonstrates the diversity of scientific areas in which PCs are gaining attention but also the opportunities one can exploit using a crystal engineering approach, for example, the design of novel dynamic functional soft materials for future use in flexible devices or soft-robotic machines.

Dual-responding circularly polarized luminescence based on mechanically and thermally induced assemblies of cyano-distyrylbenzene hydrogen bonding liquid crystals

Circularly polarized luminescence controlled by both mechanics and temperature was observed for the first time. The cyano-distyrylbenzene-cholesterol liquid crystals exhibited not only mechanochromism and thermochromism but also mechanically induced and thermally induced circularly polarized.

Thiophene-fused polyaromatics: synthesis, columnar liquid crystal, fluorescence and electrochemical properties

Efficient syntheses that incorporate thiophene units into different extended conjugation systems are of interest as a result of the prevalence of sulfur-rich aromatics in organic electronics. Self-organization by using liquid crystal properties is also desirable for optimal processing of organic electronics and optical devices. In this article, we describe a two-step process to access extended regioisomers of polyaromatics with different shapes. This method involves an efficient single or double benzannulation from an alkyne precursor followed by Scholl cyclization. In spite of their unconventional nondiscoid shape, these materials display stable columnar liquid crystal phases. We examine the photophysical and electrochemical properties and find that structurally very similar thiophene-fused polyaromatics display significant differences in their properties.

5,6,12,13-Tetraazaperopyrenes as Unique Photonic and Mechanochromic Fluorophores

5,6,12,13-Tetraazaperopyrenes with different number of tert-butyl groups (c-TAPP-T, c-TAPP-H) were synthesized, via four-fold Bischler-Napieralski cyclization as the key step. As deduced from the single-crystal structures and optical properties, N-doping and substitution type allow for a precise control of intermolecular interactions. Compared to the reported 1,3,8,10-tetraazaperopyrenes, significantly different packing modes were found in 5,6,12,13-tetraazaperopyrenes. Going from c-TAPP-T to c-TAPP-H, two additional tert-butyl groups lead to different preferential growth directions, affording 1D and 2D microcrystals, respectively. Most importantly, both microcrystals exhibit excellent optical waveguide properties with extraordinarily low loss coefficients and unique polarization features. Although c-TAPP-H possesses a rigid and planar core, its crystals display an exceptional mechanochromic fluorescence, which, again, depends on the mode of molecular packing.

Visible responses under high pressure in crystals: phenolphthalein and its analogues with adjustable ring-opening threshold pressures

The ring-opening reaction of phenolphthalein (PP) crystals under hydrostatic pressure provided by using a diamond anvil cell (DAC) is described in this paper for the first time. The color of the crystals changed into red from colorless visibly. The ring-opening threshold pressures could be adjusted by changing the substituent groups. Mechanochromic responses under hydrostatic pressure could also be achieved in polymer blends, which contributes to their practical applications.
