Selective Boryl-Anion Migration in a Vinyl sp2 -sp3 Diborane Induced by Soft Borane Lewis Acids

Vinylidene rearrangements of internal borylalkynes via 1,2-boryl migration

Vinylidene rearrangement of alkynes is a well-established and powerful method for alkyne transformations, while use of borylalkynes has remained largely unexplored. This paper describes vinylidene rearrangements of internal borylalkynes using a cationic ruthenium complex. This rearrangement is applicable to alkynes with both tri-(B(pin), B(dan)) and tetracoordinate (B(mida)) boryl groups, and the reaction rate is dramatically affected by the Lewis acidity of the boryl group. Mechanistic study revealed that the rearrangement proceeds via 1,2-boryl migration regardless of the coordination number of the boron center. The migration mode was elucidated by theoretical calculations to indicate that the migration of the tricoordinate boryl groups is an electrophilic process in contrast to the previous vinylidene rearrangements of internal alkynes with two carbon substituents.

Controllable Regiodivergent Alkynylation of 1,3-Bis(Boronic) Esters Activated by Distinct Organometallic Reagents

1,3-Bis(boronic) esters can be readily synthesized from alkylBpin precursors. Selective transformations of these compounds hold the potential for late-stage functionalization of the remaining C-B bond, leading to a diverse array of molecules. Currently, there are no strategies available to address the reactivity and, more importantly, the controllable regiodivergent functionalization of 1,3-bis(boronic) esters. In this study, we have achieved controllable regiodivergent alkynylation of these molecules. The regioselectivity has been clarified based on the unique chelation patterns observed with different organometallic reagents. Remarkably, this methodology effectively addresses the low reactivity of 1,3-bis(boronic) esters and bridges the gap in radical chemistry, which typically yields only the classical products formed via stable radical intermediates. Furthermore, the compounds synthesized through this approach serve as potent building blocks for creating molecular diversity.

Reaction of 4-Bpin-o-Carborane with Ketones: Sequential Carbon Vertex Alkylation and B-B Bond Activation

Diboron compounds are important reagents in a series of transition metal catalyzed or metal-free borylation reactions. We describe herein a unique reactivity of 4-Bpin-o-carborane with ketones under basic conditions, leading to sequential cage carbon alkylation, B-B bond activation and unexpected O-migration. The reaction was compatible with a good substrate scope including dialkyl or alkyl aryl ketones. The reaction mechanism is also proposed, involving cage CH deprotonation, nucleophilic attack of ketone, and O-migration along with B-B bond cleavage.

Decarboxylation of β-boryl NHPI esters enables radical 1,2-boron shift for the assembly of versatile organoborons

In recent years, numerous 1,2-R shift (R = aliphatic or aryl) based on tetracoordinate boron species have been well investigated. In the contrary, the corresponding radical migrations, especially 1,2-boryl radical shift for the construction of organoborons is still in its infancy. Given the paucity and significance of such strategies in boron chemistry, it is urgent to develop other efficient and alternative synthetic protocols to enrich these underdeveloped radical 1,2-boron migrations, before their fundamental potential applications could be fully explored at will. Herein, we have demonstrated a visible-light-induced photoredox neutral decarboxylative radical cross-coupling reaction, which undergoes a radical 1,2-boron shift to give a translocated C-radical for further capture of versatile radical acceptors. The mild reaction conditions, good functional-group tolerance, and broad β-boryl NHPI esters scope as well as versatile radical acceptors make this protocol applicable in modification of bioactive molecules. It can be expected that this methodology will be a very useful tool and an alternative strategy for the construction of primary organoborons via a novel radical 1,2-boron shift mode.

A 1,3-boron shift reaction of homoallenylboronates to synthesise 2-boryl-1,3-dienes

We describe a 1,3-boron shift-type reaction of homoallenylboronates at the center (sp) carbon in allenes to afford 2-boryl-1,3-dienes with a variety of substituents. Notably, this reaction occurs in situ with allenylboronates in the presence of carbamate and a small excess of sec-BuLi, and it is not necessary to isolate the unstable homoallenylboronates.

Palladium-catalyzed Lewis acid-regulated cascade annulation of alkynes with unactivated alkenes to access diverse α-methylene-γ-lactones

A palladium-catalyzed Lewis acid-regulated cascade annulation of alkynes with unactivated alkenes for the preparation of alkyl substituted α-methylene-γ-lactones with excellent Z/E selectivities was accomplished.

Transborylation of alkenylboranes with diboranes

Exchange of boryl moieties between alkenylboranes and diboron reagents has been postulated as a stereospecific cross-metathesis pathway with concomitant formation of mixed diboron reagents. DFT calculations propose a mechanism for the stereocontrolled C(sp²)-B/B'-B' cross-metathesis with both symmetric and non-symmetric diboron reagents.

1,2-Aryl Migration Induced by Amide C-N Bond-Formation: Reaction of Alkyl Aryl Ketones with Primary Amines Towards α,α-Diaryl β,γ-Unsaturated γ-Lactams

Rearrangement reactions incorporated into cascade reactions play an important role in rapidly increasing molecular complexity from readily available starting materials. Reported here is a Cu-catalyzed cascade reaction of α-(hetero)aryl-substituted alkyl (hetero)aryl ketones with primary amines that incorporates an unusual 1,2-aryl migration induced by amide C-N bond formation to produce a class of structurally novel α,α-diaryl β,γ-unsaturated γ-lactams in generally good-to-excellent yields. This cascade reaction has a broad substrate scope with respect to primary amines, allows a wide spectrum of (hetero)aryl groups to smoothly undergo 1,2-migration, and tolerates electronically diverse α-substituents on the (hetero)aryl ring of the ketones. Mechanistically, this 1,2-aryl migration may stem from the intramolecular amide C-N bond formation which induces nucleophilic migration of the aryl group from the acyl carbon center to the electrophilic carbon center that is conjugated with the resulting iminium moiety.

Reactions of B2 (o-tolyl)4 with Boranes: Assembly of the Pentaborane(9), HB[B(o-tolyl)(μ-H)]4

Reactions of the diborane(4) B2 (o-tolyl)4 and monohydridoboranes are shown to give B(o-tolyl)3 and (o-tolyl)BR2 (R2 =(C8 H14 ) 3, cat 4, pin 5, (C6 F5 )2 6) as the major products. The corresponding reaction with BH3 -sources gives complex mixtures, resulting from hydride/aryl exchange, dimerization and borane elimination. This led to the isolation of the first tetra-substituted pentaborane(9) HB[B(o-tolyl)(μ-H)]4 8. The reaction pathways are probed experimentally and by computations.

Synthesis of 1,3-Bis-(boryl)alkanes through Boronic Ester Induced Consecutive Double 1,2-Migration

A general and efficient approach for the preparation of 1,3-bis-(boryl)alkanes is introduced. It is shown that readily generated vinylboron ate complexes react with commercially available ICH2 Bpin to valuable 1,3-bis-(boryl)alkanes. The introduced transformation, which is experimentally easy to conduct, shows broad substrate scope and high functional-group tolerance. Mechanistic studies reveal that the reaction does not proceed via radical intermediates. Instead, an unprecedented boronic ester induced sequential bis-1,2-migration cascade is suggested.

Neutral cyclic sp2-sp3 and sp3-sp3 diboranes from N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide insertion into 1,2-dichlorodiboranes(4)

We report the synthesis and structural characterization of new neutral cyclic sp2-sp3 and sp3-sp3 diboranes from the reaction of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide with 1,2-dichlorodiboranes(4) at room temperature. The present study is the first example of an insertion reaction of carbodiimide into diborane(4).

Electrophilic fluoroalkylthiolation induced diastereoselective and stereospecific 1,2-metalate migration of alkenylboronate complexes

A transition metal free process for conjunctive functionalization of alkenylboron ate-complexes with electrophilic fluoroalkylthiolating reagents is described, affording β-trifluoroalkylthiolated and difluoroalkylthiolated boronic esters in good yield and excellent diastereoselectivity. The potential applicability of the method was demonstrated by the preparation of a difluoromethylthiolated mimic 12 of a potential drug molecule PF-4191834 for the treatment of asthma.

Visible-light-mediated borylation of aryl and alkyl halides with a palladium complex

Palladium catalyzed visible-light-mediated borylation of inactivated aryl and alkyl halides is reported; the method provided high yields and excellent functional group compatibility. Furthermore, arylsilicates were synthesized selectively using dimethylphenylsilyl boronic ester via changing the reaction conditions. Finally, the possible reaction mechanism is determined through fluorescence quenching and turn on/off experiments.

An Olefinic 1,2-Boryl-Migration Enabled by Radical Addition: Construction of gem-Bis(boryl)alkanes

A series of in situ formed alkenyl diboronate complexes from alkenyl Grignard reagents (commercially available or prepared from alkenyl bromides and Mg) with B₂ Pin₂ (bis(pinacolato)diboron) react with diverse alkyl halides by a Ru photocatalyst to give various gem-bis(boryl)alkanes. Alkyl radicals add efficiently to the alkenyl diboronate complexes, and the adduct radical anions undergo radical-polar crossover, specifically, a 1,2-boryl-anion shift from boron to the α-carbon sp² center. This transformation shows good functional-group compatibility and can serve as a powerful synthetic tool for late-stage functionalization in complex compounds. Measurements of the quantum yield reveal that a radical-chain mechanism is operative in which the alkenyl diboronates acts as reductive quencher for the excited state of the photocatalyst.

Selective Boryl-Anion Migration in a Vinyl sp2 -sp3 Diborane Induced by Soft Borane Lewis Acids

An intramolecular 1,2‐boryl‐anion migration from boron to carbon has been achieved by selective activation of the π system in [(vinyl)B₂Pin₂)]⁻ using “soft” BR₃ electrophiles (BR₃=BPh₃ or 9‐aryl‐BBN). The soft character is key to ensure 1,2‐migration proceeds instead of oxygen coordination/B−O activation. The BR₃‐induced 1,2‐boryl‐anion migration represents a triple borylation of a vinyl Grignard reagent using only B₂Pin₂ and BR₃ and forms differentially protected 1,1,2‐triborylated alkanes. Notably, by increasing the steric bulk at the β position of the vinyl Grignard reagent used to activate B₂Pin₂, 1,2‐boryl‐anion migration can be suppressed in favor of intermolecular {BPin}⁻ transfer to BPh₃, thus enabling simple access to unsymmetrical sp²−sp³ diboranes.
