Dynamic Gas-Bridged Bond: An Opportunity of Fabricating Dynamic Assembled Materials with Gas

Gas molecules, as a family of unique polyatomic building blocks, have long been considered hard to involve in molecular assembly or construct assembled materials due to their structural simplicity yet paucity of defined interacting sites. To solve this non-trivial challenge, a core idea is to break the limit of current ways of bonding gas molecules, endowing them with new modes of interactions that match the basic requirements of molecular assembly. In recent years, a new concept, named the dynamic gas-bridged bond (DGB), has emerged, which allows for gas molecules to constitute a dynamic bridging structure between other building blocks with the aid of frustrated Lewis pairs. This makes it possible to harness gas in a supramolecular or dynamic manner. Herein, this perspective discusses distinct dynamic natures of DGBs and manifests their particular functions in various fields, including the control of molecular/polymeric self-assembly nanostructures, creation of multidimensional assembled materials, and recyclable catalysts. The future research direction and challenges of dynamic gas-bridged chemistry toward gas-programmed self-assembly and gas-constructed adaptive materials are highlighted.

On the Reactivity of Phosphaalumenes towards C-C Multiple Bonds

Heterocycles containing group 13 and 15 elements such as borazines are an integral part of organic, biomedical and materials chemistry. Surprisingly, heterocycles containing P and Al are rare. We have now utilized phosphaalumenes in reactions with alkynes, alkenes and conjugated double bond systems. With sterically demanding alkynes 1,2-phosphaalumetes were afforded, whereas the reaction with HCCH or HCCSiMe₃ gave 1,4-phosphaaluminabarrelenes. Using styrene saturated 1,2-phosphaalumates were formed, which reacted further with additional styrene to give different regio-isomers of 1,4-aluminaphosphorinanes. Using ethylene, a 1,4-aluminaphosphorinane is obtained, while with 1,3-butadiene a bicyclic system containing an aluminacyclopentane and a phosphirane unit was synthesized. The experimental work is supported by theoretical studies to shed light on the mechanism governing the formation of these heterocycles.

Three-Component Reaction to 1,4,2-Diazaborole-Type Heteroarene Systems

The borane FmesBH₂ reacts in a three-component reaction with an isonitrile and a small series of organonitriles to give rare examples of the class of dihydro-1,4,2-diazaborole derivatives. In a related way, annulated BN-indolizine derivatives became conveniently available, as were dihydro-1,4,2-oxaza- or thiazaborole derivatives. The nucleophilic framework of a dihydro-1,4,2-diazaborole example allowed for an uncatalyzed acylation reaction. It also served as a 1,3-dipolar reagent and underwent a [3+2] cycloaddition/[4+2] cycloreversion sequence when treated with methyl propiolate to give the respective pyrrole product. The [3+2] cycloaddition product of a dihydro-1,4,2-diazaborole derivative with N-phenylmaleimide was isolated and its heterobicyclo[2.2.1]heptane derived structure characterized by X-ray diffraction.

Carbon Monoxide Coupling Reactions via a Frustrated Lewis Pair-Derived η2-Formyl Borane

The η²-formyl borane system 3 is readily available by carbonylation of the vicinal P/BH frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) 1. It serves as a frustrated C/B Lewis pair toward carbon dioxide or phenylisocyanate. In the presence of B(C₆F₅)₃, it forms the coupling product between two CO-derived units. The resulting compound 13 rearranged to a doubly O-borylated endiolate, with both of the central carbon atoms originating from carbon monoxide. The subsequent treatment with a silane gave a rare macrocyclic silicon endiolate.

Electrochromic Polycationic Organoboronium Macrocycles with Multiple Redox States

Polycationic macrocycles are attractive as they display unique molecular switching capabilities arising from their redox properties. Although diverse polycationic macrocycles have been developed, those based on cationic boron systems remain very limited. We present herein the development of novel polycationic macrocycles by introducing organoboronium moieties into a conjugated organoboron macrocyclic framework. These macrocycles consist of four bipyridylboronium units that are connected by fluorene and either electron-deficient arylborane or electron-rich arylamine moieties. Electrochemical studies reveal that the macrocycles undergo reversible multi-step redox processes with transfer of up to 10 electrons. Switchable electrochromic behavior is demonstrated via spectroelectrochemical studies and the observed color changes are rationalized by correlation with computed electronic transitions using DFT methods.

Reaction of carbon oxides with an ethylene-bridged PH/B Lewis pair

The reaction of 2,4,6-tri(tert-butyl)phenyl vinyl phosphane with Piers' borane [HB(C6F5)2] gave the ethylene-bridged PH/B frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) system. It is a monomer at high temperature (>323 K), but exists as an associated 12-membered macrocyclic trimer below 273 K. The PH/B FLP splits dihydrogen and serves as a metal-free hydrogenation catalyst. It adds carbon dioxide. It serves as a PH/B template for the reduction of carbon monoxide by the HB(C6F5)2 borane to the formyl stage. The resulting six membered P/B/O containing heterocycle is opened upon treatment with pyridine and it reacts with benzaldehyde in a boron mediated Claisen-Tishchenko reaction.

Tri-insertion with dearomatization of terminal arylalkynes using a carborane based frustrated Lewis pair template

Intramolecular vicinal Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLPs) have played a significant role in the activation of small molecules, and their stabilities and reactivities are found to strongly depend on the nature of the bridging units. This work reports a new carborane based FLP, 1-PPh2-2-BPh2-1,2-C2B10H10 (2), which reacts with an equimolar amount of p-R2NC6H4C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH (R = Me, Et, Ph) at room temperature to give C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C triple bond addition products 1,2-[PPh2C(R2NC6H4)[double bond, length as m-dash]CHBPh2]-1,2-C2B10H10 (3) in high yields. Compounds 3 react further with two equiv. of p-R2NC6H4C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH (R = Me, Et) at 60-70 °C to give unprecedented stereoselective tri-insertion products, 3,3a,6,6a-tetrahydronaphtho[1,8a-b]borole tricycles (4), in which one of the aryl rings from arylacetylene moieties has been dearomatized with the formation of four stereocenters including one quaternary carbon center. It is noted that the phosphine unit functions as a catalyst during the reactions. After trapping and structural characterization of a key intermediate, a reaction mechanism is proposed, involving sequential alkyne insertion and 1,2-boryl migration.

Using the Secondary PH/BH Functional Groups of an Active Geminal Frustrated Lewis Pair for Carbon Monoxide Reduction and Reactions with Nitriles and Isonitriles

Reaction of the secondary alkynyl(Mes*)PH phosphane 2 with (Fmes)BH₂ ⋅SMe₂ gives the geminal PH/BH frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) 3. The PH and the BH functions are jointly used in the reduction of carbon monoxide under mild reaction conditions to give the [P]-CH₂ -O-[B] product. A subsequent cycloaddition sequence results in the liberation of formaldehyde. The FLP 3 reacts with benzonitrile to give a P-benzamidine, and it couples two isonitriles at the FLP framework.

Rapid and Scalable Access to Sequence-Controlled DHDM Multiblock Copolymers by FLP Polymerization

An immortal N-(diphenylphosphanyl)-1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazol-2-imine/diisobutyl (2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxy) aluminum (P(NIⁱ Pr)Ph₂ /(BHT)Alⁱ Bu₂ )-based frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) polymerization strategy is presented for rapid and scalable synthesis of the sequence-controlled multiblock copolymers at room temperature. Without addition of extra initiator or catalyst and complex synthetic procedure, this method enabled a tripentacontablock copolymer (n=53, k=4, dp_n =50) to be achieved with the highest reported block number (n=53) and molecular weight (M_n =310 kg mol^-1 ) within 30 min. More importantly, this FLP polymerization strategy provided access to the multiblock copolymers with tailored properties by precisely adjusting the monomer sequence and block numbers.

Solid-State NMR Techniques for the Structural Characterization of Cyclic Aggregates Based on Borane-Phosphane Frustrated Lewis Pairs

Modern solid-state NMR techniques offer a wide range of opportunities for the structural characterization of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs), their aggregates, and the products of cooperative addition reactions at their two Lewis centers. This information is extremely valuable for materials that elude structural characterization by X-ray diffraction because of their nanocrystalline or amorphous character, (pseudo-)polymorphism, or other types of disordering phenomena inherent in the solid state. Aside from simple chemical shift measurements using single-pulse or cross-polarization/magic-angle spinning NMR detection techniques, the availability of advanced multidimensional and double-resonance NMR methods greatly deepened the informational content of these experiments. In particular, methods quantifying the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction strengths and indirect spin-spin interactions prove useful for the measurement of intermolecular association, connectivity, assessment of FLP-ligand distributions, and the stereochemistry of adducts. The present review illustrates several important solid-state NMR methods with some insightful applications to open questions in FLP chemistry, with a particular focus on supramolecular associates.

Formation of Active Cyclic Five-membered Frustrated Phosphane/Borane Lewis Pairs and their Cycloaddition Reactions

The cyclic five-membered frustrated phosphane/borane Lewis pairs 11 a, b featuring the bulky octaethylhydrindacenyl- (Eind) substituent or its mono-bromo derivative (^Br Eind) at phosphorus are monomeric at room temperature. The reactive frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) cleave dihydrogen. The cyclic FLP 11 b (^Br Eind) undergoes 1,2-P/B addition to ethylene to give the zwitterionic heteronorbornane derivative 14 b. It reacts similarly with the carbon-carbon double bond of norbornene. With a variety of organic π-reagents, the cyclic FLP 11 b often undergoes reaction sequences reminiscent of the Alder-Rickert reaction: the cycloaddition reaction is followed by rapid cycloreversion to form new five-membered heterocyclic FLP products with extrusion of ethene. Reactions of 11 b with benzaldehyde or with acetylenes follow this reaction pattern.
