Sandwich-Kernelled AgCu Nanoclusters with Golden Ratio Geometry and Promising Photothermal Efficiency

Metal nanoclusters have recently attracted extensive interest from the scientific community. However, unlike carbon-based materials and metal nanocrystals, they rarely exhibit a sheet kernel structure, probably owing to the instability caused by the high exposure of metal atoms (particularly in the relatively less noble Ag or Cu nanoclusters) in such a structure. Herein, we synthesized a novel AgCu nanocluster with a sandwich-like kernel (diameter≈0.9 nm and length≈0.25 nm) by introducing the furfuryl mercaptan ligand (FUR) and the alloying strategy. Interestingly, the kernel consists of a centered silver atom and two planar Ag10 pentacle units with completely mirrored symmetry after a rotation of 36 degrees. The two Ag10 pentacles and some extended structures show an unreported golden ratio geometry, and the two inner five-membered rings and the centered Ag atom form an unanticipated full-metal ferrocene-like structure. The featured kernel structure causes the dominant radial direction transition of excitation electrons, as determined via time-dependent density functional theory calculations, which affords the protruding absorption at 612 nm and contributes to the promising photothermal conversion efficiency of 67.6 % of the as-obtained nanocluster, having important implications for structure-property correlation and the development of nanocluser-based photothermal materials.

Electrospun nanofibers modified with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 for electrochemiluminescent determination of terbutaline

For the first time it is demonstrated that zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 electrospun nanofibers (ZIF-8 NF) could serve as electrochemiluminescence (ECL) accelerator for the facile detection of terbutaline residual. A novel ECL sensor for the determination of terbutaline was fabricated based on ZIF-8 NF. The ZIF-8 NF were successfully prepared according to electrospinning and in-situ growth method. First, chitosan was modified on the surface of the electrode, and then the ZIF-8 NF was modified onto the upper layer of the chitosan. Taking advantages of chitosan and ZIF-8 NF in conductivity and electrocatalysis, the modified electrode presents obvious ECL phenomenon in 0.2 M PBS solution (pH 10.0) containing 0.025 M luminol. After the addition of terbutaline, ECL intensity decreased significantly, and the decreasing value showed a linear relationship with the logarithm of terbutaline concentration. The linear range was from 2.0 × 10^-10 to 2.0 × 10^-5 M, and the detection limit was 1.41 × 10^-11 M (3σ/m). The method had high sensitivity, good stability, and good applicability to actual pork samples.

Effect of Heterometal-Functionalization and Template Exchange on the Redox Chemistry of Molecular Vanadium Oxides

Polyoxometalates (POMs) have emerged as material of interest in many applications such as energy storage and conversion due to their redox activity and molecularly defined structure. However, especially for polyoxovanadates a lack of understanding between structural modifications and physicochemical properties remains. The present study leverages a lacunary dodecavanadate to systematically investigate the electronic effect of heterometal functionalization. While structural distortion affects the stability of the cluster, the redox potentials correlate with the overall cluster charge. Furthermore, we report the first bromide-templated analogue of this cluster family. While the halide anion is crucial for the formation of the cluster, no major effect on the electrochemical properties is observed. By improving the understanding of structure-property relationship in this work, we hope to enable a more predictable tuning of redox-properties of polyoxovandates.

Characterizing Polyoxovanadate-Alkoxide Clusters Using Vanadium K-Edge X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy

A number of technologies would benefit from developing inorganic compounds and materials with specific electronic and magnetic exchange properties. Unfortunately, designing compounds with these properties is difficult because metal⋅⋅⋅metal coupling schemes are hard to predict and control. Fully characterizing communication between metals in existing compounds that exhibit interesting properties could provide valuable insight and advance those predictive capabilities. One such class of molecules are the series of Lindqvist iron-functionalized and hexavanadium polyoxovanadate-alkoxide clusters, which we characterized here using V K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Substantial changes in the pre-edge peak intensities were observed that tracked with the V 3d-electron count. The data also suggested substantial delocalization between the vanadium cations. Meanwhile, the Fe^III cations were electronically isolated from the polyoxovanadate core.
