Fabrication of Photoactuators: Macroscopic Photomechanical Responses of Metal-Organic Frameworks to Irradiation by UV Light

Photoresponsive metal-organic framework materials for advance applications

The interaction between light and materials produces a range of phenomena within molecular systems, leading to advanced applications in the field of materials science. In this regard, metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have become superior candidates to others because of their easy tailor-made synthetic methods via incorporation of photoactive moieties into their structural assembly. Photoresponsive MOFs exhibit a massive variety of exciting properties, including photochromism, photomagnetism, photoluminescence, photon up or down conversion, photoconductivity, nonlinear optical properties, photosalient effects and photoinduced switching of conformations. These photoresponsive properties of MOFs regulate different potential applications, such as on-demand gas sorption and separation, optical sensing, fabrication of photoactuators and photosensing electronic devices, dye degradation, catalysis, cargo delivery, ink-free erasable printing, bio-imaging and drug delivery in biological systems. Therefore, judicious crystal engineering along with an understanding of their structure-property relationship will lead to the fabrication of desired photosensitive MOFs. Herein, we attempted to incorporate categorical descriptions based on advanced applications of photoresponsive MOFs considering a wide range of recent publications.

Polymorph driven diversification of photosalient responses in a zinc(II) coordination complex

A novel crystallographic form of a Zn(II) coordination complex [Zn(4-ohbz)2(4-nvp)2] (1-Form-III) (H4-ohbz = 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and 4-nvp = (E)-4-(1-naphthylvinyl)pyridine), undergoes a solid-state photochemical [2+2] cycloaddition reaction accompanied by a moderate photosalient effect, whereby single-crystals show cracking and splitting. This UV-induced cycloaddition accompanies a single-crystal to single-crystal transformation, allowing for continuous monitoring of the unit cell parameters. The new polymorph represents an intermediate form of the two previously reported crystallographic forms of [Zn(4-ohbz)2(4-nvp)2], and provides novel insight into moderating the magnitude of photosalient responses across polymorphic materials.

Photomechanical properties in metal-organic crystals

The emergence of materials that can effectively convert photon energy (light) into motion (mechanical work) and change their shapes on command is of great interest for their potential in the fabrication of devices (powered by light) that will revolutionize the technologies of optical actuators, smart medical devices, soft robotics, artificial muscles and flexible electronics. Recently, metal-organic crystals have emerged as desirable smart hybrid materials that can hop, split and jump. Thus, their incorporation into polymer host objects can control movement from molecules to millimetres, opening up a new world of light-switching smart materials. This feature article briefly summarizes the recent part of the fast-growing literature on photomechanical properties in metal-organic crystals, such as coordination compounds, coordination polymers (CPs), and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The article highlights the contributions of our group along with others in this area and aims to provide a consolidated idea of the engineering strategies and structure-property relationships of these hybrid materials for such rare phenomena with diverse potential applications.

Photo- and Stress-Induced Bending of (E)-1,2-Bis(pyridinium-4-yl)ethene Dinitrate Crystals

We report on the elastic and photodynamic properties of (E)-1,2-bis(pyridinium-4-yl)ethene dinitrate [H2Ebpe](NO3)2, whose needle-like crystals can be reversibly deformed by applying external mechanical stress. The macro-scale mechanical properties of [H2Ebpe](NO3)2 crystals were quantified by a three-point bending test, which gave a stress-strain curve with an elastic modulus of 1.18 GPa, and its values are lower than those of other flexible elastic organic crystals. It can also be reversibly bent through the [2+2] cycloaddition reaction of the olefin moiety, depending on the direction of UV irradiation.

Photocycloaddition of Zero-Dimensional Metal Halide Hybrids with Reversible Photochromism

In this work, two zero-dimensional (0D) metal halide hybrids L2ZnBr4 [1, L = (E)-4-(2-(1H-pyrrol-3-yl)vinyl)-1-methylpyridin-1-ium] and L6Pb3Br12 (2) were prepared, which demonstrated photochromism and photoinduced cracking. Upon irradiation at 450 nm, a single crystal-to-single crystal transformation occurred as a result of the [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of L. Interestingly, compared to the complete photocycloaddition of L in 1, only two-thirds of L monomers could be photodimerized in 2 because of the difference in L orientation. 1 shows reversible photochromic behavior including rapid response time, few cracks, high conversion rate, and good reaction reversibility, while 2 exhibits no significant color change but distinct photoinduced cracking because of the large local lattice strain induced by inhomogeneous and anisotropic deformation. Moreover, the photocycloaddition of L results in the distinct shift of photoluminescence of 1 and 2, attributed to the variation in conjugation of π electrons and distortion of metal halide clusters. As a proof-of-concept, reversible optical writing is demonstrated for 1. These findings provide new insights into the design of stimuli-responsive multifunctional materials.

The Use of Photocycloaddition Reactions to Drive Mechanical Motions Resembling Humanoid Movements

With the aim of producing a photomechanical material for incorporation in soft microrobots, a one-dimensional diene coordination polymer (CP) [Cd(F-bpeb)(3-CBA)2]n (CP1, F-bpeb=4,4'-((1E,1'E)-(2,5-difluoro-1,4-phenylene)bis(ethene-2,1-diyl))dipyridine, 3-HCBA=3-chlorobenzoic acid) was synthesized and characterized. Irradiation of CP1 with ultraviolet (UV) or visible light causes [2+2] photocycloaddition reactions resulting in the introduction of crystal strain which triggers various types of crystal movements. Composite films of CP1-PVA (SC) fabricated by dispersing CP1 crystals into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution allow amplification of the crystal movement so that the film strips exhibit fast and flexible curling upon photoirradiation. The composite films may be cut into long rectangular strips and folded to simulate soft microrobots which exhibit a variety of fast, flexible and continuous photomechanical movements resembling a human performing various gymnastic exercises.

Construction of olefinic coordination polymer single crystal platforms: precise organic synthesis, in situ exploration of reaction mechanisms and beyond

Olefin [2+2] photocycloaddition reactions based on coordination-bond templates provide numerous advantages for the selective synthesis of cyclobutane compounds. This review outlines the recent advances in the design and construction of single crystal platforms of olefinic coordination polymers for precise organic synthesis, in situ exploration of reaction mechanisms, and possible developments as comprehensively as possible. Numerous examples are presented to illustrate how the arrangements of the olefin pairs influence the solid-state photoreactivity and examine the types of cyclobutane products. Furthermore, the photocycloaddition reaction mechanisms are investigated by combining advanced techniques such as single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, laser scanning confocal microscopy and theoretical calculations. Finally, potential applications resulting from promising physicochemical properties before and after photoreactions are discussed, and existing challenges and possible solutions are also proposed.

Diverse Co(II) Coordination Polymers with the Same Mixed Ligands: Evaluation of Chemical Stability and Structural Transformation

Reactions of Co(OAc)2·4H2O, N'N'-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)oxalamide (L) and 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid (H2SDA) afforded four coordination polymers with the same mixed ligands, {[Co(L)(SDA)(H2O)2]·H2O·CH3OH}n, 1, {[Co(L)0.5(SDA)]·2H2O·0.5L}n, 2, {[Co(L)1.5(SDA)(H2O)]·H2O}n, 3, and {[Co2(L)1.5(SDA)2(H2O)2]·4H2O}n, 4, which have been structurally characterized using single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Complexes 1-4 are 2D layers, revealing topologies of sql, 2,6L1, (4,4)Ia, and 6L12, respectively, and demonstrating that the metal-to-ligand ratio, solvent system, and reaction temperature are important in determining the structural diversity. The immersion of these complexes into various solvents shows that the structural types govern the chemical stabilities of 1-4. Reversible structural transformation is shown for complexes 1 and 2 upon solvent removal and adsorption, while those of 3 and 4 are irreversible.

Photoinduced Puffing with Large Volume Expansion and Photomechanical Motions induced by Topochemical [4+4] Reactions in Molecular Crystal Solvates

In this work, we report the first example of two crystal solvates of an anthracene-benzhydrazide based molecule (Ant) that display very distinct photo-responsive behaviour when 365 or 405 nm or visible light is illuminated. For the first time, the crystal hydrate that has water molecule in the lattice (hereafter named as Ant-H2O) display fascinating puffing behavior with large volume expansion upto 50 % accompanied with surface modulation when illuminated with 405 nm light, a phenomenon very much similar to the rice or popcorn puffing by thermal treatment. Utilizing the properties of photoconverted Ant-H2O crystals, we have demonstrated their application in photoinduced enhanced liquid absorption using various liquids/solutions. The other crystal solvate having DMF in the crystal lattice (hereafter named as Ant-DMF) responds to 405 nm light by bending, twisting, chopping, jumping or splitting etc. The chopping of Ant-DMF crystal was also observed under ambient/white light but at a slower rate compared to 405 nm light. Single crystal X-ray diffraction study reveals that the photoinduced puffing and photomechanical effects of these materials are rooted to the topochemical [4+4] cycloaddition reaction between the anthracene moieties that facilitate molecular packing change assisted by the reconfiguration of intermolecular non-covalent interactions involving lattice trapped solvent molecules.

[2 + 2] cycloaddition and its photomechanical effects on 1D coordination polymers with reversible amide bonds and coordination site regulation

Photo-responsive materials can convert light energy into mechanical energy, with great application potential in biomedicine, flexible electronic devices, and bionic systems. We combined reversible amide bonds, coordination site regulation, and coordination polymer (CP) self-assembly to synthesize two 1D photo-responsive CPs. Obvious photomechanical behavior was observed under UV irradiation. By combining the CPs with PVA, the mechanical stresses were amplified and macroscopic driving behavior was realized. In addition, two cyclobutane amide derivatives and a pair of cyclobutane carboxyl isomers were isolated through coordination bond destruction and amide bond hydrolysis. Therefore, photo-actuators and supramolecular synthesis in smart materials may serve as important clues.

Cu(II) Coordination Polymers Containing Mixed Ligands with Different Flexibilities: Structural Diversity and Iodine Adsorption

Reactions of N,N'-bis(3-methylpyridyl)oxalamide (L1), N,N'-bis(3-methylpyridyl)adipoamide (L2) and N,N'-bis(3-methylpyridyl)sebacoamide (L3) with tricarboxylic acids and Cu(II) salts afforded {[Cu(L1)(1,3,5-HBTC)]·H2O}n (1,3,5-H3BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid), 1, {[Cu1.5(L2)1.5(1,3,5-BTC)(H2O)2]·6.5H2O}n, 2, [Cu(L2)0.5(1,3,5-HBTB)]n (1,3,5-H3BTB = 1,3,5-tri(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene), 3, [Cu4(L3)(OH)2(1,3,5-BTC)2]n, 4, {[Cu3(L3)2(1,3,5-BTB)2]·2.5MeOH·2H2O}n, 5, and {[Cu3(L3)2(1,3,5-BTB)2 ]·DMF·2H2O}n, 6, which have been structurally characterized by using single crystal X-ray crystallography. Complexes 1-4 form a 2D layer with the {44.62}-sql topology, a 2D layer with the (4.62)2(42.62.82)-bex topology, a three-fold interpenetrated 3D net with the (412·63)-pcu topology and a 3D framework with the (410·632·83)(42·6)2(43·63) topology, respectively, whereas 5 and 6 are 3D frameworks with the (63)2(64·82)(68·85·102) topology. Complex 5 shows a better iodine adsorption factor of 290.0 mg g-1 at 60 °C for 360 min than the other ones, revealing that the flexibility of the spacer ligand governs the structural diversity and the adsorption capacity.

Pyridyl-Isonicotinoyl Hydrazone-Bridged Zn(II) Coordination Framework with Thiophenedicarboxylato Link: Structure, Biological Activity, and Electrical Conductivity

Multidimensional applicability of functional materials is one of the focal attractions in today's scientific research. Highly stable and crystalline coordination polymers served as one of the active members in the club of multifunctional materials. Toward this concept, a 3-dimensional (3D) coordination framework, {[Zn2(tdc)2(pcih)2]n} (1) (tdc2-, 2,5-thiophene dicarboxylate; pcih, pyridine-4-carboxaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazine), is designed and has been structurally well characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. One of the carboxylate groups of tdc2- chelates to Zn(II), while the other carboxylato group (-COO) acts as bridging-O to neighboring Zn(II); the pcih serves as pyridyl-N bridging motif to two Zn(II) centers. The optical band gap, 3.83 eV (Tauc's plot), implies probable semiconducting ability of the material. Interestingly, the device fabricated using compound 1 measures the electrical conductivity, 2.21 × 10-5 S cm-1, and series resistance (Rs), 807 Ω, at the dark phase, which are improved significantly to 6.36 × 10-5 S cm-1 and 460 Ω, respectively, under illumination conditions. Isoniazid, used to synthesize pcih and hence the Zn(II) compound 1, is a medicine; so, the medicinal efficiency of 1 is checked by measuring the anticancer activity against MDA-MB-231, HeLa, HCT-116, and HepG2 cells. It is observed that drug efficacy is highest on MDA-MB-231 cells (IC50: 19.43 ± 1.36 μM) than other cancer cells [IC50: 24.43 ± 2.02 μM (HeLa), 26.06 ± 3.48 μM (HCT-116), and 44.28 ± 3.04 μM (HepG2)]. Therefore, the material has significant contribution in the area of energy and health toward the sustainable development goals.

A dual-functional 2D coordination polymer exhibiting photomechanical and electrically conductive behaviours

A photoactive two-dimensional coordination polymer (2D CP) [Zn2(4-spy)2(bdc)2]n (1) [4-spy = 4-styrylpyridine and H2bdc = 1,4-benzendicarboxylic acid] undergoes a photochemical [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction upon UV irradiation. Interestingly, the crystals of 1 show different photomechanical effects, such as jumping, swelling, and splitting, during UV irradiation. In addition, the CP was employed for conductivity measurements before and after UV irradiation via current density-voltage characteristics and impedance spectroscopy, which suggest that they are semiconducting in nature and can be used as Schottky diodes. Thus, this work demonstrates the potential dual applications of a 2D CP based on photosalient and conductivity properties.

Regulation of Crystal Structures and Solid-State Photoreactivity of Diolefin Coordination Polymers by Carboxylate Ligands

Olefinic coordination polymers (CPs) have recently drawn more attention, owing to the many possibilities in conformational conversions and photochemical reactivity that olefin molecules offer. In the presence of different carboxylic acids, we utilize one diolefin ligand 4,4'-((1E,1'E)-(2,5-dimethoxyl-1,4-phenylene)bis(ethene-2,1-diyl))dipyridine (OCH3-bpeb) and Cd(II) to assemble six different crystalline CPs (1-6). By fine-tuning the substituent size, carboxyl group number, and geometrical configuration of carboxylate ligands, these diolefin CPs show quite different crystal architecture models, from one-dimensional intersecting stacking to one-dimensional parallel stacking to three-dimensional interpenetrated structure. Of these, four kinds of CPs (1, 2, 5, and 6) are demonstrated to be photoreactive for [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions, as confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both 2 and 5 can be dimerized into different cyclobutane products in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal manner under visible light, and remarkably, the photocycloaddition reaction of 5 involves a rare phase transition with structural symmetry enhancement from P1̅ to P2/n. This work demonstrates the power of carboxylate ligands in tuning single crystal structures and photocycloaddition reactions of CPs, which provides important references for the further exploration of other physicochemical properties of functionalized olefin-containing complexes.

Phase Transition-Promoted Rapid Photomechanical Motions of Single Crystals of a Triene Coordination Polymer

Molecular crystals with the ability to transform light energy into macroscopic mechanical motions are a promising class of materials with potential applications in actuating and photonic devices. In regard to such materials, coordination polymers that exhibit dynamic photomechanical motion, associated with a phase transition, are unknown. Herein, we report an intriguing photoactive, one-dimensional ZnII coordination polymer, 1, derived from 1,3,5-tri-4-pyridyl-1,2-ethenylbenzene and 3,5-difluorobenzoate. Single crystals of 1 under UV light irradiation exhibit rapid shrinking and bending, violent bursting-jumping, splitting, and cracking behavior. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and 1 H NMR spectroscopy reveal an unusual photoinduced phase transition involving a single-crystal-to-single-crystal [2+2] cycloaddition reaction that results in photomechanical responses. Interestingly, crystals of 1, which are triclinic with space groupP 1 ‾ ${P\bar{1}}$ , are transformed into a higher symmetry, monoclinic cell with space group C2/c. This process represents a rare example of symmetry enhancement upon photoirradiation. The photomechanical activity is likely due to the sudden release of stress associated with strained molecular geometries and significant solid-state molecular movement arising from cleavage and formation of chemical bonds. A composite membrane fabricated from 1 and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) also displays interesting photomechanical behavior under UV light illumination, indicating the material's potential as a photoactuator.

Photomechanical effects based on a one-dimensional Zn coordination polymer crystal driven by [4 + 4] cycloaddition

Photomechanical crystals are promising candidates for photo actuators due to their ability to convert light energy into mechanical energy. We synthesized a coordination polymer crystal that can undergo [4 + 4] cycloaddition reactions with mechanical motion. The inclusion of {[ZnL2(4,4'-bipy)(CH3OH)2]}∞ in a polymer membrane significantly magnified the actuation behavior.

Solid-State Structural Transformation in Zn(II) Metal-Organic Frameworks in a Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Fashion

Solid-state structural transformation is an interesting methodology used to prepare various metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that are challenging to prepare in direct synthetic procedures. On the other hand, solid-state [2 + 2] photoreactions are distinctive methodologies used for light-driven solid-state transformations. Meanwhile, most of these photoreactions explored are quantitative in nature, in addition to them being stereo-selective and regio-specific in manner. In this work, we successfully synthesized two photoreactive novel binuclear Zn(II) MOFs, [Zn2(spy)2(tdc)2] (1) and [Zn2(spy)4(tdc)2] (2) (where spy = 4-styrylpyridine and tdc = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate) with different secondary building units. Both MOFs are interdigitated in nature and are 2D and 1D frameworks, respectively. Both the compounds showed 100% and 50% photoreaction upon UV irradiation, as estimated from the structural analysis for 1 and 2, respectively. This light-driven transformation resulted in the formation of 3D, [Zn2(rctt-ppcb)(tdc)2] (3), and 2D, [Zn2(spy)2(rctt-ppcb)(tdc)2] (4) (where rctt = regio, cis, trans, trans; ppcb = 1,3-bis(4'-pyridyl)-2,4-bis(phenyl)cyclobutane), respectively. These solid-state structural transformations were observed as an interesting post-synthetic modification. Overall, we successfully transformed novel lower-dimensional frameworks into higher-dimensional materials using a solid-state [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reaction.

Regulating photosalient behavior in dynamic metal-organic crystals

Dynamic photoactuating crystals have become a sensation due to their potential applications in developing smart medical devices, molecular machines, artificial muscles, flexible electronics actuators, probes and microrobots. Here we report the synthesis of two iso-structural metal-organic crystals, [Zn(4-ohbz)₂(4-nvp)₂] (1) and [Cd(4-ohbz)₂(4-nvp)₂] (2) {H4-ohbz = 4-hydroxy benzoic acid; 4-nvp = 4-(1-naphthylvinyl)pyridine} which undergo topochemical [2 + 2] cycloaddition under UV irradiation as well as sunlight to generate a dimerized product of discrete metal-complex [Zn(4-ohbz)₂(rctt-4-pncb)] {rctt-4-pncb = 1,3-bis(4'-pyridyl)-2,4-bis(naphthyl)cyclobutane} (1') and one-dimensional coordination polymer (1D CP) [Cd(4-ohbz)₂(rctt-4-pncb)] (2') respectively, in a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) process. The Zn-based compound demonstrates photosalient behaviour, wherein crystals show jumping, splitting, rolling, and swelling upon UV irradiation. However, the Cd-based crystals do not show such behaviour maintaining the initial supramolecular packing and space group. Thus the photomechanical behaviour can be induced by choosing a suitable metal ion. The above findings are thoroughly validated by quantitative density functional theory (DFT) calculations which show that the Zn-based crystal shifts towards an orthorhombic structure to resolve the anisotropic UV-induced mechanical strain. Furthermore, the mechano-structure-property relationship has been established by complimentary nanoindentation measurements, which are in-line with the DFT-predicted single crystal values.

Low-Voltage Driven Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite Actuators: Structures, Materials, and Applications

With the characteristics of low driving voltage, light weight, and flexibility, ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMCs) have attracted much attention as excellent candidates for artificial muscle materials in the fields of biomedical devices, flexible robots, and microelectromechanical systems. Under small voltage excitation, ions inside the IPMC proton exchange membrane migrate directionally, leading to differences in the expansion rate of the cathode and the anode, which in turn deform. This behavior is caused by the synergistic action of a three-layer structure consisting of an external electrode layer and an internal proton exchange membrane, but the electrode layer is more dominant in this process due to the migration and storage of ions. The exploration of modifications and alternatives for proton exchange membranes and recent advances in the fabrication and characterization of conductive materials, especially carbon-based materials and conductive polymers, have contributed significantly to the development of IPMCs. This paper reviews the progress in the application of proton exchange membranes and electrode materials for IPMCs, discusses various processes currently applied to IPMCs preparation, and introduces various promising applications of cutting-edge IPMCs with high performance to provide new ideas and approaches for the research of  new generation of low-voltage ionic soft actuators.

Light-driven flagella-like motion of coordination compound single crystals

Single crystals of coordination complexes that show mechanical motion under the influence of external stimuli are of great interest due to their applications in photoactuators, sensors and probes. The solid-state [2+2] cycloaddition reaction has been one of the most prominent chemical reactions for photoresponsive materials in recent years. However, a relatively limited number of compounds have been reported, and most of these compounds have only shown destructive photosalient effects. Here, we report two photoreactive Zn(II) metal complexes with a thiophene-based photoreactive linker, 2tpy (4-(2-(thiophen-2-yl)vinyl)pyridine). In addition, under photoirradiation these complexes showed flagella-like bending, first towards and subsequently away from the excitation light source. This is the first report of metal-complexes and the solid-state [2+2] cycloaddition reaction that presents flagella-like motion in single crystals.

Locking Effect in Metal@MOF with Superior Stability for Highly Chemoselective Catalysis

Ultrasmall metal nanoparticles (NPs) show high catalytic activity in heterogeneous catalysis but are prone to reunion and loss during the catalytic process, resulting in low chemoselectivity and poor efficiency. Herein, a locking effect strategy is proposed to synthesize high-loading and ultrafine metal NPs in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for efficient chemoselective catalysis with high stability. Briefly, the MOF ZIF-90 with aldehyde groups cooperating with diamine chains via aldimine condensation was interlocked, which was employed to confine in situ formation of Au NPs, denoted as Au@L-ZIF-90. The optimized Au@L_a-ZIF-90 has highly dispersed Au NPs (2.60 ± 0.81 nm) with a loading amount around 22 wt % and shows a great performance toward 3-aminophenylacetylene (3-APA) from the selective hydrogenation of 3-nitrophenylacetylene (3-NPA) with a high yield (99%) and excellent durability (over 20 cycles), far superior to contrast catalysts without chains locking and other reported catalysts. In addition, experimental characterization and systematic density functional theory calculations further demonstrate that the locked MOF modulates the charge of Au nanoparticles, making them highly specific for nitro group hydrogenation to obtain 3-APA with high selectivity (99%). Furthermore, this locking effect strategy is also applicable to other metal nanoparticles confined in a variety of MOFs, and all of these catalysts locked with chains show great selectivity (≥90%) of 3-APA. The proposed strategy in this work provides a novel and universal method for precise control of the inherent activity of accessible metal nanoparticles with a programmable MOF microenvironment toward highly specific catalysis.

Photo-controllable heterostructured crystals of metal-organic frameworks via reversible photocycloaddition

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based heterostructures are attractive because they can provide versatile platforms for various applications but are limited by complex liquid epitaxial growth methods. Here, we employ photolithography to fabricate and control MOF-based heterostructured crystals via [4 + 4] photocycloaddition. A layered dysprosium-dianthracene framework, [Dy(NO3)3(depma2)1.5]·(depma2)0.5 (2) [depma2 = pre-photodimerized 9-diethylphosphonomethylanthracene (depma)] underwent a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transition at 140 °C to form [Dy(NO3)3(depma)(depma2)]·(depma2)0.5 (3). The dissociated anthracene moieties are face-to-face π-π interacted allowing a reversible photocycloaddition between 2 and 3. This structural transformation causes a luminescence switch between blue and yellow-green and thus can be used to fabricate erasable 2 + 3 heterostructured crystals for rewritable photonic barcodes. The internal strain at the heterostructure interface leads to photobending and straightening of the crystal, a photomechanical response that is fast, reversible and durable, even operating at 140 °C, making it promising for photoactuation. This work may inspire the development of intelligent MOF-based heterostructures for photonic applications.

Identification of folic acid and sulfaquinoxaline using a heterometallic Zn-Eu MOF as a sensor

A d-f heterometallic MOF using the 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid ligand (H₂LZ) was obtained by solvothermal synthesis, namely [EuZn(LZ)₂(HCOO)(H₂O)₃]_n (1). The structure analysis shows that compound 1 comprises heterometallic Zn²⁺ and Eu³⁺ ions, which are connected by LZ^2- and HCOO^- anions to form a three-dimensional framework. MOF 1 exhibited high stability of fluorescence intensity in the scope of pH 2-11 in an aqueous solution. Furthermore, MOF 1 served as an excellent selective sensing material for the detection of folic acid in the presence of some imitating materials of the human body and discerned sulfaquinoxaline in sulfonamide drugs with high sensitivity, selectivity, and reusability. Moreover, we designed and manufactured a sensor paper based on MOF 1 as a portable device for the visual detection of folic acid and sulfaquinoxaline. More crucially, this is the first example in which luminescent MOF is used to identify sulfaquinoxaline molecules in an aqueous solution. In addition, the luminescence sensing mechanisms of MOF 1 for the detection of the above analytes were explored in detail.

Photomechanical Motions in Organoboron-Based Phosphorescent Molecular Crystals Driven by a Crystal-State [2 + 2] Cycloaddition Reaction

Photoluminescent molecular crystals integrated with the ability to transform light energy into macroscopic mechanical motions are a promising choice of materials for both actuating and photonic devices. However, such dynamic photomechanical effects, based on molecular organoboron compounds as well as phosphorescent crystalline materials, are not yet known. Here we present an intriguing example of photomechanical molecular single crystals of a newly synthesized organoboron containing Lewis acid-base molecular adduct (BN1, substituted triphenylboroxine and 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene) having a capsule shape molecular geometry. The single crystals of BN1 under UV light exhibit controllable rapid bending-shape recovery, delamination, violent splitting-jumping, and expanding features. The detailed structural investigation by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and ¹H NMR spectroscopy reveals that the photosalient behavior of the BN1 single crystals is driven by a crystal-to-crystal [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction, supported by four donor-acceptor type B←N bonds. The instant photomechanical reaction in the BN1 crystals occurs under UV on account of sudden release of stress associated with the strained molecular geometry, significant solid-state molecular movements (supramolecular change), and cleavage of half intermolecular B←N linkages to result in a complete photodimerized single-crystalline product via the existence of two other intermediate photoproducts. In addition, the BN1 crystals display short-lived room temperature phosphorescence, and the photodynamic events are accompanied by the enhancement of their phosphorescence intensity to yield the photoproduct. Interestingly, the molecular crystals of the final photoproduct polymerize at ambient conditions when recrystallized from the solution forming a 2D supramolecular crystalline polymer stabilized by the retention of all B←N coordination modes.

Design of five two-dimensional Co-metal-organic frameworks for oxygen evolution reaction and dye degradation properties

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively investigated as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) materials because of their numerous advantages such as large specific surface areas, ultrathin thicknesses, well-defined active metal centers, and adjustable pore structures. Five Co-metal-organic frameworks, namely, [Co(L) (4.4′-bbidpe)H2O]n [YMUN 1 (YMUN for Youjiang Medical University for Nationalities)], {[Co2(L)2 (4.4′-bbibp)2]·[Co3(L) (4.4′-bbibp)]·DMAC}n (YMUN 2), [Co(L) (3,5-bip)]n (YMUN 3), [Co(L) (1,4-bimb)]n (YMUN 4), and [Co(L) (4.4′-bidpe)H2O]n (YMUN 5), were designed and fabricated from flexible dicarboxylic acid 1,3-bis(4′-carboxylphenoxy)benzene (H2L) and rigid/flexible imidazole ligands. Their frameworks consist of two-dimensional lamellar networks with a number of differences in their details. Their frameworks are discussed and compared, and their oxygen evolution reaction electrochemical activities and photocatalysis dye degradation properties are investigated.

Role of an Ice Surface in the Photoreaction of Coumarins

Ice affects many chemical reactions in nature, which greatly influences the atmosphere, climate, and life. However, the exact mechanism of ice in these chemical reactions remains elusive. For example, it is still an open question as to whether ice can act as a catalyst to greatly enhance the reactivity and selectivity, which is essential for the production of some natural compounds in our planet. Here, we discover that ice can lead to high efficiency and stereoselectivity of the [2 + 2] photodimerization of coumarin and its derivatives. The conversion of the [2 + 2] photodimerization of coumarins enhanced by ice is dozens of times higher than that in the unfrozen saturated solution, and the reaction displays a high syn-head-head stereoselectivity (>95%) in comparison with those in the absence of the ice. Note that almost no reaction occurs in the crystal powder and melt of the coumarins, indicating that the role of ice in the photodimerization reaction is not simply due to the usual mechanisms found in the freezing concentration. We further reveal that the reaction rate is found to be proportional to the total area of the ice surface and follows Michaelis-Menten-like kinetics, indicating that the ice surface catalyzes the reaction. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that ice surfaces can induce reactants to form a two-dimensional liquid-crystal-ordered layer with a suitable intermolecular distance and unique side-by-side packing, facilitating stereoselective photodimerization for syn-head-head dimers. These findings give evidence that ice-surface-induced molecular assembly may play an important role in atmospheric heterogeneous photoreaction processes.

A Dual Functional 2D MOF Exhibiting Rare Photosalient Effect as well as Selective Pd(II) Sensing in Aqueous Medium

A Zn(II) based two-dimensional metal-organic framework (2D MOF) [Zn₂(suc)₂(4-nvp)₂] (1) [H₂suc = succinic acid and 4-nvp = 4-(1-naphthylvinyl)pyridine] exhibits a "photosalient effect" under UV light as well as sunlight along with the release of a stereoselective cyclobutane ligand, 1,3-bis(4'-pyridyl)-2,4-bis(naphthyl)cyclobutane (rctt-4-pncb). Photolysis of in situ generated MOF in solution also leads to the formation of rctt-4-pncb crystals. Interestingly, compound 1 shows a high selectivity for Pd(II) sensing in aqueous medium.

Sustainable Coordination Polymer-Based Catalyst and Its Application in the Nitroaromatic Hydrogenation under Mild Conditions

Nitroarene reduction has played a crucial role in the environment remediation and public health. However, few research studies have been undertaken regarding the use of infinite coordination polymer-based catalysts in this process. Herein, we are looking for a way to catalyze the reduction of nitroarenes using a new and well-designed coordination polymer-based palladium catalyst. The Co-BDC-NH₂ coordination polymer was prepared through a co-precipitation reaction between 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid as a linker and the cobalt cation as a node. Functionalization of the prepared Co-BDC-NH₂ with 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde and subsequent metallation with a Pd cation led to the formation of the final catalyst, i.e., Co-BDC-NH₂-py-Pd. It has been specified that palladium species substantially contribute to the reduction of nitroarenes in the presence of hydrazine hydrate (N₂H₄·H₂O). The highest conversion (100%) of nitroarenes to the corresponding amines was achieved under relatively mild conditions. This heterogeneous catalyst was able to catalyze the reduction of nitroarenes to desired products without changing other substituents. The reusability and stability of the catalyst were confirmed through four consecutive reduction tests without a major decrease in catalytic activity.

Sunlight-Induced In Situ Isomerization of Both Ligands in a Mixed-Ligand Coordination Polymer: From Photosalient to Photoinert Crystals

Reaction of Zn(NO₃ )₂  ⋅ 6H₂ O, maleic acid (H₂ mal) and trans-4-(1-naphthylvinyl)pyridine (trans-nvp) in the dark results in the formation of a one-dimensional coordination polymer (1D CP) [Zn(mal)(trans-nvp)] (1), which is photosalient in nature. The crystals of 1 pop violently under UV light and moderately in sunlight, and generate cyclobutane ligands. However, the same reaction mixture kept in visible light exhibits the rare example of in situ isomerization of both ligands: cis-trans transformation of maleate and trans-cis isomerization of the nvp ligands, and subsequent formation of another 1D CP [Zn(fum)(cis-nvp)₂ (H₂ O)₂ ] (2, H₂ fum=fumaric acid), which is found to be photoinert. Thus, altering the reaction condition from dark to visible light gives rise to photosalient to photoinert crystals.

Photomechanical behavior triggered by [2 + 2] cycloaddition and photochromism of a pyridinium-functionalized coordination complex

Photoinduced bending behavior triggered by [2 + 2] cycloaddition of a photoactive complex has been successfully achieved, accompanied by photochromic and fluorescence changes that provide convenience for long-distance observation of photomechanical motion. The key design feature is based on the introduction of flexible methylene groups and cation-π interactions. Moreover, the potential application in photomechanical devices was reflected by bending and supporting force experiments on the complex composite film, which is of increasing importance especially in soft actuators and robots.

Controllable photomechanical bending of metal-organic rotaxane crystals facilitated by regioselective confined-space photodimerization

Molecular machines based on mechanically-interlocked molecules (MIMs) such as (pseudo) rotaxanes or catenates are known for their molecular-level dynamics, but promoting macro-mechanical response of these molecular machines or related materials is still challenging. Herein, by employing macrocyclic cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8])-based pseudorotaxane with a pair of styrene-derived photoactive guest molecules as linking structs of uranyl node, we describe a metal-organic rotaxane compound, U-CB[8]-MPyVB, that is capable of delivering controllable macroscopic mechanical responses. Under light irradiation, the ladder-shape structural unit of metal-organic rotaxane chain in U-CB[8]-MPyVB undergoes a regioselective solid-state [2 + 2] photodimerization, and facilitates a photo-triggered single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation, which even induces macroscopic photomechanical bending of individual rod-like bulk crystals. The fabrication of rotaxane-based crystalline materials with both photoresponsive microscopic and macroscopic dynamic behaviors in solid state can be promising photoactuator devices, and will have implications in emerging fields such as optomechanical microdevices and smart microrobotics.

Tunable photosalient behaviours within coordination polymers via functional molecular prearrangements

Four Cd(II)/diene coordination polymers (CPs) with similar 1D chain motifs exhibit different photosalient (PS) behaviours in response to UV light. The [2+2] photoreaction between the CC groups within these CPs results in diverse PS behaviours of their crystals with different CC pair arrangements. The interesting PS behaviours of these CPs can be applied in design and fabrication of advanced photoactuating materials.

Topochemical [2 + 2] Cycloaddition in a Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework via SCSC Transformation Impacts HalogenHalogen Interactions

A photoactive two-dimensional metal-organic framework (2D MOF) [Zn(4-spy)(DCTP)]_n (1) [where 4-spy = 4-styrylpyridine and H₂DCTP = 2,5-dichloroterephthalic acid] undergoes photochemical [2 + 2] cycloaddition on UV irradiation to obtain three-dimensional (3D) MOF [Zn(rctt-4-ppcb)(DCTP)]_n (2) [rctt-4-ppcb = 1,3-bis(4'-pyridyl)-2,4-bis(phenyl)cyclobutane] in a single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) manner.
