Mitigating the Overheat of Stretchable Electronic Devices Via High-Enthalpy Thermal Dissipation of Hydrogel Encapsulation

The practical application of flexible and stretchable electronics is significantly influenced by their thermal and chemical stability. Elastomer substrates and encapsulation, due to their soft polymer chains and high surface-area-to-volume ratio, are particularly susceptible to high temperatures and flame. Excessive heat poses a severe threat of damage and decomposition to these elastomers. By leveraging water as a high enthalpy dissipating agent, here, a hydrogel encapsulation strategy is proposed to enhance the flame retardancy and thermal stability of stretchable electronics. The hydrogel-based encapsulation provides thermal protection against flames for more than 10 s through the evaporation of water. Further, the stretchability and functions automatically recover by absorbing air moisture. The incorporation of hydrogel encapsulation enables stretchable electronics to maintain their functions and perform complex tasks, such as fire saving in soft robotics and integrated electronics sensing. With high enthalpy heat dissipation, encapsulated soft electronic devices are effectively shielded and retain their full functionality. This strategy offers a universal method for flame retardant encapsulation of stretchable electronic devices.

Chaotropic Effect-Boosted Thermogalvanic Ionogel Thermocells for All-Weather Power Generation

Ionic thermocells convert heat into electricity and are promising power sources for electronic devices. However, discontinuous and small electricity output limits practical use under varying environmental conditions. Here, a thermogalvanic ionogel with a high Seebeck coefficient (32.4 mV K-1) is designed. Thermocells that combine thermogalvanic ionogel-based thermocells, which realize all-weather power generation via passive radiative cooling, are also developed. These thermocells generate electricity continuously under varying weather conditions and over a wide temperature range (-40 to 90 °C), with a normalized power density of 25.84 mW m-2 K-2. Advanced characterization shows that the chaotropic effect enhances the Seebeck coefficient, while the self-supplying temperature difference given the radiative cooling structure enables all-weather power generation. These results provide an effective strategy for developing practical thermocells suitable for diverse daily and seasonal variations.

High-Toughness CO2-Sourced Ionic Polyurea Adhesives

Polyurea (PUa) adhesives are renowned for their exceptional adhesion to diverse substrates even in harsh environments. However, the presence of quadruple bidentate intermolecular hydrogen bonds in the polymer chains creates a trade-off between cohesive energy and interfacial adhesive energy. To overcome this challenge, a series of CO2-sourced ionic PUa adhesives with ultratough adhesion to various substrates are developed. The incorporated ionic segments within the adhesive serve to partially mitigate the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions while conferring unique electrostatic interactions, leading to both high cohesive energy and interfacial adhesive energy. The maximum adhesive strength of 10.9 MPa can be attained by ionizing the CO2-sourced PUa using bromopropane and subsequently exchanging the anion with lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. Additionally, these ionic PUa adhesives demonstrate several desirable properties such as low-temperature stability (-80 °C), resistance to organic solvents and water, high flame retardancy, antibacterial activity, and UV-fluorescence, thereby expanding their potential applications. This study presents a general and effective approach for designing high-strength adhesives suitable for a wide array of uses.

Chlorella-Loaded Antibacterial Microneedles for Microacupuncture Oxygen Therapy of Diabetic Bacterial Infected Wounds

Hypoxia and infection are urgent clinical problems in chronic diabetic wounds. Herein, living Chlorella-loaded poly(ionic liquid)-based microneedles (PILMN-Chl) are constructed for microacupuncture oxygen and antibacterial therapy against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-infected chronic diabetic wounds. The PILMN-Chl can stably and continuously produce oxygen for more than 30 h due to the photosynthesis of the loaded self-supported Chlorella. By combining the barrier penetration capabilities of microneedles, the continuous and sufficient oxygen supply of Chlorella, and the sterilization activities of PIL, the PILMN-Chl can accelerate chronic diabetic wounds in vivo by topical targeted sterilization and hypoxia relief in deep parts of wounds. Thus, the self-oxygen produced microneedles modality may provide a promising and facile therapeutic strategy for treating chronic, hypoxic, and infected diabetic wounds.

Heterogeneous Nucleating Agent for High-Boiling-Point Nonhalogenated Solvent-Processed Organic Solar Cells and Modules

High-boiling-point nonhalogenated solvents are superior solvents to produce large-area organic solar cells (OSCs) in industry because of their wide processing window and low toxicity; while, these solvents with slow evaporation kinetics will lead excessive aggregation of state-of-the-art small molecule acceptors (e.g. L8-BO), delivering serious efficiency losses. Here, a heterogeneous nucleating agent strategy is developed by grafting oligo (ethylene glycol) side-chains on L8-BO (BTO-BO). The formation energy of the obtained BTO-BO; while, changing from liquid in a solvent to a crystalline phase, is lower than that of L8-BO irrespective of the solvent type. When BTO-BO is added as the third component into the active layer (e.g. PM6:L8-BO), it easily assembles to form numerous seed crystals, which serve as nucleation sites to trigger heterogeneous nucleation and increase nucleation density of L8-BO through strong hydrogen bonding interactions even in high-boiling-point nonhalogenated solvents. Therefore, it can effectively suppress excessive aggregation during growth, achieving ideal phase-separation active layer with small domain sizes and high crystallinity. The resultant toluene-processed OSCs exhibit a record power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.42% (certificated 19.12%) with excellent operational stability. The strategy also has superior advantages in large-scale devices, showing a 15.03-cm2 module with a record PCE of 16.35% (certificated 15.97%).

Framework Nucleic Acids Combined with 3D Hybridization Chain Reaction Amplifiers for Monitoring Multiple Human Tear Cytokines

Existing tear sensors are difficult to perform multiplexed assays due to the minute amounts of biomolecules in tears and the tiny volume of tears. Herein, the authors leverage DNA tetrahedral frameworks (DTFs) modified on the wireless portable electrodes to effectively capture 3D hybridization chain reaction (HCR) amplifiers for automatic and sensitive monitoring of multiple cytokines in human tears. The developed sensors allow the sensitive determination of various dry eye syndrome (DES)-associated cytokines in human tears with the limit of detection down to 0.1 pg mL-1, consuming as little as 3 mL of tear fluid. Double-blind testing of clinical DES samples using the developed sensor and commercial ELISA shows no significant difference between them. Compared with single-biomarker diagnosis, the diagnostic accuracy of this sensor based on multiple biomarkers has improved by ≈16%. The developed system offers the potential for tear sensors to enable personalized and accurate diagnosis of various ocular diseases.

Enhancing Light Outcoupling Efficiency via Anisotropic Low Refractive Index Electron Transporting Materials for Efficient Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

Thanks to the extensive efforts toward optimizing perovskite crystallization properties, high-quality perovskite films with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield are successfully achieved. However, the light outcoupling efficiency of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) is impeded by insufficient light extraction, which poses a challenge to the further advancement of PeLEDs. Here, an anisotropic multifunctional electron transporting material, 9,10-bis(4-(2-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-1-yl)phenyl) anthracene (BPBiPA), with a low extraordinary refractive index (ne ) and high electron mobility is developed for fabricating high-efficiency PeLEDs. The anisotropic molecular orientations of BPBiPA can result in a low ne of 1.59 along the z-axis direction. Optical simulations show that the low ne of BPBiPA can effectively mitigate the surface plasmon polariton loss and enhance the photon extraction efficiency in waveguide mode, thereby improving the light outcoupling efficiency of PeLEDs. In addition, the high electron mobility of BPBiPA can facilitate balanced carrier injection in PeLEDs. As a result, high-efficiency green PeLEDs with a record external quantum efficiency of 32.1% and a current efficiency of 111.7 cd A-1 are obtained, which provides new inspirations for the design of electron transporting materials for high-performance PeLEDs.

Molecular-Level Insight into Impact of Additives on Film Formation and Molecular Packing in Y6-based Organic Solar Cells

Additive engineering is widely utilized to optimize film morphology in active layers of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the role of additive in film formation and adjustment of film morphology remains unclear at the molecular level. Here, taking high-efficiency Y6-based OSC films as an example, this work thus employs all-atom molecular-dynamics simulations to investigate how introduction of additives with different π-conjugation degree thermodynamically and dynamically impacts nanoscale molecular packings. These results demonstrate that the van der Waals (vdW) interactions of the Y6 end groups with the studied additives are strongest. The larger the π-conjugation degree of the additive molecules, the stronger the vdW interactions between additive and Y6 molecules. Due to such vdW interactions, the π-conjugated additive molecules insert into the neighboring Y6 molecules, thus opening more space for relaxation of Y6 molecules to trigger more ordered packing. Increasing the interactions between the Y6 end groups and the additive molecules not only accelerates formation of the Y6 ordered packing, but also induces shorter Y6-intermolecular distances. This work reveals the fundamental molecular-level mechanism behind film formation and adjustment of film morphology via additive engineering, providing an insight into molecular design of additives toward optimizing morphologies of organic semiconductor films.

Tumor Microenvironment Modulating CaCO3 -Based Colloidosomal Microreactors Can Generally Reinforce Cancer Immunotherapy

Tumor hypoxia and acidity, two general features of solid tumors, are known to have negative effect on cancer immunotherapy by directly causing dysfunction of effector immune cells and promoting suppressive immune cells inside tumors. Herein, a multifunctional colloidosomal microreactor is constructed by encapsulating catalase within calcium carbonate (CaCO3 ) nanoparticle-assembled colloidosomes (abbreviated as CaP CSs) via the classic double emulsion method. The yielded CCaP CSs exhibit well-retained proton-scavenging and hydrogen peroxide decomposition performances and can thus neutralize tumor acidity, attenuate tumor hypoxia, and suppress lactate production upon intratumoral administration. Consequently, CCaP CSs treatment can activate potent antitumor immunity and thus significantly enhance the therapeutic potency of coloaded anti-programmed death-1 (anti-PD-1) antibodies in both murine subcutaneous CT26 and orthotopic 4T1 tumor xenografts. In addition, such CCaP CSs treatment also markedly reinforces the therapeutic potency of epidermal growth factor receptor expressing chimeric antigen receptor T (EGFR-CAR-T) cells toward a human triple-negative breast cancer xenograft by promoting their tumor infiltration and effector cytokine secretion. Therefore, this study highlights that chemical modulation of tumor acidity and hypoxia can collectively reverse tumor immunosuppression and thus significantly potentiate both immune checkpoint blockade and CAR-T cell immunotherapies toward solid tumors.

Recent Progress in Dopant-Free and Green Solvent-Processable Organic Hole Transport Materials for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Dopant-free hole transport layers (HTLs) are crucial in enhancing perovskite solar cells (pero-SCs). Nevertheless, conventional processing of these HTL materials involves using toxic solvents, which gives rise to substantial environmental concerns and renders them unsuitable for large-scale industrial production. Consequently, there is a pressing need to develop dopant-free HTL materials processed using green solvents to facilitate the production of high-performance pero-SCs. Recently, several strategies have been developed to simultaneously improve the solubility of these materials and regulate molecular stacking for high hole mobility. In this review, a comprehensive overview of the methodologies utilized in developing dopant-free HTL materials processed from green solvents is provided. First, the study provides a brief overview of fundamental information about green solvents and Hansen solubility parameters, which can serve as a guideline for the molecular design of optimal HTL materials. Second, the intrinsic relationships between molecular structure, solubility in green solvents, molecular stacking, and device performance are discussed. Finally, conclusions and perspectives are presented along with the rational design of highly efficient, stable, and green solvent-processable dopant-free HTL materials.

Emerging Co-Assembled and Sustained Released Natural Medicinal Nanoparticles for Multitarget Therapy of Choroidal Neovascularization

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) disease has become a worldwide senile disease, and frequent intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) is the mainstream treatment in the clinic, which is associated with sight-threatening complications. Herein, nintedanib, an inhibitor of angiogenesis, and lutein, a potent antioxidant, can co-assemble into nanoparticles through multiple noncovalent interactions. Interestingly, the co-assembled lutein/nintedanib nanoparticles (L/N NPs) exhibit significantly improved stability and achieve long-term sustained release of two drugs for at least two months in mice. Interestingly, in rabbit eyeball with a more complete barrier system, the L/N NPs still successfully distribute in the retina and choroid for a month. In the laser-induced mouse choroidal neovascularization model, the L/N NPs after a minimally invasive subconjunctival administration can successfully inhibit angiogenesis and achieve comparable and even better therapeutic results to that of standard intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF. Therefore, the subconjunctival injection of L/N NPs with long-term sustained drug release behavior represents a promising and innovative strategy for AMD treatment. Such minimally invasive administration together with the ability to effectively inhibit angiogenesis reduce inflammation and counteract oxidative stress and holds great potential for improving patient outcomes and quality of life in those suffering from this debilitating eye condition.

Inhaled immunoantimicrobials for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Effective therapeutic modalities and drug administration strategies for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations are lacking. Here, mucus and biofilm dual-penetrating immunoantimicrobials (IMAMs) are developed for bridging antibacterial therapy and pro-resolving immunotherapy of COPD. IMAMs are constructed from ceftazidime (CAZ)-encapsulated hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs) gated with a charge/conformation-transformable polypeptide. The polypeptide adopts a negatively charged, random-coiled conformation, masking the pores of HMSNs to prevent antibiotic leakage and allowing the nebulized IMAMs to efficiently penetrate the bronchial mucus and biofilm. Inside the acidic biofilm, the polypeptide transforms into a cationic and rigid α helix, enhancing biofilm retention and unmasking the pores to release CAZ. Meanwhile, the polypeptide is conditionally activated to disrupt bacterial membranes and scavenge bacterial DNA, functioning as an adjuvant of CAZ to eradicate lung-colonizing bacteria and inhibiting Toll-like receptor 9 activation to foster inflammation resolution. This immunoantibacterial strategy may shift the current paradigm of COPD management.

Core-Shell Design of Metastable Phase Catalyst Enables Highly-Performance Selective Hydrogenation

Highly selective semihydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is a highly important reaction for catalytic industry. Developing non-noble metal based catalysts with platinum group metal-like activity and selectivity is extremely crucial yet challenging. Metastable phase catalysts provide a potential candidate to realize high activity, yet the control of selectivity remains an open question. Here, this work first reports a metastable phase core-shell: face-centered cubic (fcc) phase Ag (10 at%) core-metastable hexagonal closest packed (hcp) phase Ni (90 at%) shell catalyst, which represents high conversion rate, high selectivity, and remarkable universality for the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene and its derivatives. More impressively, a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 8241.8 h-1 is achieved, much higher than those of stable phase catalysts and reported platinum group metal based catalysts. Mechanistic investigation reveals that the surface of hcp Ni becomes more oxidized due to electron transfer from hcp Ni shell to fcc Ag core, which decreases the adsorption capacity of styrene on the metastable phase Ni surface, thus preventing full hydrogenation. This work has gained crucial research significance for the design of high performance metastable phase catalysts.

Seed-Mediated Growth for High-Efficiency Perovskite Solar Cells: The Important Role of Seed Surface

Additive engineering has emerged as one of the most promising strategies to improve the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Among additives, perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have a similar chemical composition and matched lattice structure with the perovskite matrix, which can effectively enhance the efficiency and stability of PSCs. However, relevant studies remain limited, and most of them focus on bromide-involved perovskite NCs, which may undergo dissolution and ion exchange within the FAPbI3 host, potentially resulting in an enlarged band gap. In this work, we employ butylamine-capped CsPbI3 NCs (BPNCs) as additives in PSCs, which can be well maintained and serve as seeds for regulating the crystallization and growth of perovskite films. The resultant perovskite film exhibits larger domain sizes and fewer grain boundaries without compromising the band gap. Moreover, BPNCs can alleviate lattice strain and reduce defect densities within the active layer. The PSCs incorporating BPNCs show a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 25.41 %, well over both Control of 22.09 % and oleic acid/oleylamine capped CsPbI3 NC (PNC)-based devices of 23.11 %. This work illustrates the key role of nanosized seed surfaces in achieving high-performance photovoltaic devices.

Hydrophilic 1T-WS2 Nanosheet Arrays toward Conductive Textiles for High-Efficient and Continuous Hydroelectric Generation and Storage

Flexible hydroelectric generators (HEGs) are promising self-powered devices that spontaneously derive electrical power from moisture. However, achieving the desired compatibility between a continuous operating voltage and superior current density remains a significant challenge. Herein, a textile-based van der Waals heterostructure is rationally designed between conductive 1T phase tungsten disulfide@carbonized silk (1T-WS2 @CSilk) and carbon black@cotton (CB@Cotton) fabrics with an asymmetric distribution of oxygen-containing functional groups, which enhances the proton concentration gradients toward high-performance wearable HEGs. The vertically staggered 1T-WS2 nanosheet arrays on the CSilk fabric provide abundant hydrophilic nanochannels for rapid carrier transport. Furthermore, the moisture-induced primary battery formed between the active aluminum (Al) electrode and the conductive textiles introduces the desired electric field to facilitate charge separation and compensate for the decreased streaming potential. These devices exhibit a power density of 21.6 µW cm-2 , an open-circuit voltage (Voc ) of 0.65 V sustained for over 10 000 s, and a current density of 0.17 mA cm-2 . This performance makes them capable of supplying power to commercial electronics and human respiratory monitoring. This study presents a promising strategy for the refined design of wearable electronics.

An Injectable Puerarin Depot Can Potentiate Chimeric Antigen Receptor Natural Killer Cell Immunotherapy Against Targeted Solid Tumors by Reversing Tumor Immunosuppression

Chimeric antigen receptor natural killer (CAR-NK) cell therapy represents a potent approach to suppressing tumor growth because it has simultaneously inherited the specificity of CAR and the intrinsic generality of NK cells in recognizing cancer cells. However, its therapeutic potency against solid tumors is still restricted by insufficient tumor infiltration, immunosuppressive tumor microenvironments, and many other biological barriers. Motivated by the high potency of puerarin, a traditional Chinese medicine extract, in dilating tumor blood vessels, an injectable puerarin depot based on a hydrogen peroxide-responsive hydrogel comprising poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate and ferrous chloride is concisely developed. Upon intratumoral fixation, the as-prepared puerarin depot (abbreviated as puerarin@PEGel) can activate nitrogen oxide production inside endothelial cells and thus dilate tumor blood vessels to relieve tumor hypoxia and reverse tumor immunosuppression. Such treatment can thus promote tumor infiltration, survival, and effector functions of customized epidermal growth factor receptor (HER1)-targeted HER1-CAR-NK cells after intravenous administration. Consequently, such puerarin@PEGel-assisted HER1-CAR-NK cell treatment exhibits superior tumor suppression efficacy toward both HER1-overexpressing MDA-MB-468 and NCI-H23 human tumor xenografts in mice without inducing obvious side effects. This study highlights a potent strategy to activate CAR-NK cells for augmented treatment of targeted solid tumors through reprogramming tumor immunosuppression.

Design of Boron and Transition Metal Embedded Two-Dimensional Porous Carbon Nitride for Electrocatalytic Synthesis of Urea

Electrocatalytic coupling of CO and N2 to synthesize urea under ambient conditions is considered a promising strategy to replace traditional industrial technology. It is crucial to find efficient electrocatalysts that can adsorb and activate N2 and promote the C-N coupling reaction. Herein, a new two-dimensional porous carbon nitride material with multiactive sites is designed, in which boron and transition metal are embedded. Through a series of screening, B2Cr2, B2Mn2, and B2Os2 are predicted to be potential electrocatalysts for urea synthesis. Mechanistic studies are performed on bidentate metal-metal and metal-boron sites, and both NCON and CO mechanisms are explored. The electronic structure analysis shows that there is a strong N2 chemical adsorption within the bidentate site and that the N≡N bond is significantly activated. A new mechanism where free CO is inserted for C-N coupling within the two-dimensional porous structure is proposed.

Self-fueling ferroptosis-inducing microreactors based on pH-responsive Lipiodol Pickering emulsions enable transarterial ferro-embolization therapy

Lipiodol chemotherapeutic emulsions remain one of the main choices for the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) via transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). However, the limited stability of Lipiodol chemotherapeutic emulsions would lead to rapid drug diffusion, which would reduce the therapeutic benefit and cause systemic toxicity of administrated chemotherapeutics. Therefore, the development of enhanced Lipiodol-based formulations is of great significance to enable effective and safe TACE treatment. Herein, a stable water-in-oil Lipiodol Pickering emulsion (LPE) stabilized by pH-dissociable calcium carbonate nanoparticles and hemin is prepared and utilized for efficient encapsulation of lipoxygenase (LOX). The obtained LOX-loaded CaCO3&hemin-stabilized LPE (LHCa-LPE) showing greatly improved emulsion stability could work as a pH-responsive and self-fueling microreactor to convert polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), a main component of Lipiodol, to cytotoxic lipid radicals through the cascading catalytic reaction driven by LOX and hemin, thus inducing ferroptosis of cancer cells. As a result, such LHCa-LPE upon transcatheter embolization can effectively suppress the progression of orthotopic N1S1 HCC in rats. This study highlights a concise strategy to prepare pH-responsive and stable LPE-based self-fueling microreactors, which could serve as bifunctional embolic and ferroptosis-inducing agents to enable proof-of-concept transarterial ferro-embolization therapy of HCC.

Role of Lipocalin-2 in N1/N2 Neutrophil Polarization After Stroke

BACKGROUND

Neutrophils and Lipocalin-2 (LCN2) play pivotal roles in cerebral ischemiareperfusion (I/R) injury. However, their contribution is not fully clarified.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to explore the role of LCN2 and its association with neutrophil polarization in I/R injury.

METHODS

A mouse model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was used to induce cerebral ischemia. LCN2mAb was administered 1 h and Anti-Ly6G was administered for 3d before MCAO. The role of LCN2 in the polarity transition of neutrophils was explored using an in vitro HL-60 cell model.

RESULTS

LCN2mAb pretreatment had neuroprotective effects in mice. The expression of Ly6G was not significantly different, but the expression of N2 neutrophils was increased. In the in vitro study, LCN2mAb-treated N1-HL-60 cells induced N2-HL-60 polarization.

CONCLUSION

LCN2 may affect the prognosis of ischemic stroke by mediating neutrophil polarization.

Ciprofloxacin-Loaded, pH-Responsive PAMAM-Megamers Functionalized with S-Nitrosylated Hyaluronic Acid Support Infected Wound Healing in Mice without Inducing Antibiotic Resistance

Antimicrobial-resistant bacterial infections threaten to become the number one cause of death by the year 2050. Since the speed at which antimicrobial-resistance develops is exceeding the pace at which new antimicrobials come to the market, this threat cannot be countered by making more, new and stronger antimicrobials. Promising new antimicrobials should not only kill antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, but also prevent development of new bacterial resistance mechanisms in strains still susceptible. Here, PAMAM-dendrimers are clustered using glutaraldehyde to form megamers that are core-loaded with ciprofloxacin and functionalized with HA-SNO. Megamers are enzymatically disintegrated in an acidic pH, as in infectious biofilms, yielding release of ciprofloxacin and NO-generation by HA-SNO. NO-generation does not contribute to the killing of planktonic Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but in a biofilm-mode of growth short-lived NO-assisted killing of both ciprofloxacin-susceptible and ciprofloxacin-resistant bacterial strains by the ciprofloxacin released. Repeated sub-culturing of ciprofloxacin-susceptible bacteria in presence of ciprofloxacin-loaded and HA-SNO functionalized PAMAM-megamers does not result in ciprofloxacin-resistant variants as does repeated culturing in presence of ciprofloxacin. Advances in white light-emitting organic crystals

In past decades, organic crystals have presented considerable potential in the field of optoelectronics due to their rich tunable physical and chemical properties and excellent optoelectronic characteristics. White-light emission, as a special application, has received widespread attention and has been applied in various fields, generating significant interest in the scientific community. By preparing white light-emitting organic crystals, a series of applications for future white-light sources can be realized. This article reviews the research progress on the molecular design and synthesis, preparation, and application of white light-emitting organic crystals in recent years. We hope that this review will help to understand and facilitate the development of white light-emitting organic crystals.

Iodonium Initiators: Paving the Air-free Oxidation of Spiro-OMeTAD for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

To date, perovskite solar cells (pero-SCs) with doped 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD) hole transporting layers (HTLs) have shown the highest recorded power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). However, their commercialization is still impeded by poor device stability owing to the hygroscopic lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide and volatile 4-tert-butylpyridine dopants as well as time-consuming oxidation in air. In this study, we explored a series of single-component iodonium initiators with strong oxidability and different electron delocalization properties to precisely manipulate the oxidation states of Spiro-OMeTAD without air assistance, and the oxidation mechanism was clearly understood. Iodine (III) in the diphenyliodonium cation (IP+ ) can accept a single electron from Spiro-OMeTAD and forms Spiro-OMeTAD⋅+ owing to its strong oxidability. Moreover, because of the coordination of the strongly delocalized TFSI- with Spiro-OMeTAD⋅+ in a stable radical complex, the resulting hole mobility was 30 times higher than that of pristine Spiro-OMeTAD. In addition, the IP-TFSI initiator facilitated the growth of a homogeneous and pinhole-free Spiro-OMeTAD film. The pero-SCs based on this oxidizing HTL showed excellent efficiencies of 25.16 % (certified: 24.85 % for 0.062-cm2 ) and 20.71 % for a 15.03-cm2 module as well as remarkable overall stability.

3D π-d Conjugated Coordination Polymer Enabling Ultralong Life Magnesium-Ion Storage

There has been increasing interests in π-d conjugated coordination polymers (CCPs) for energy storage because of their rapid charge transfer through long-range planar π-d conjugation between ligands and metal centers. Nevertheless, currently reported CCPs for energy storage are mostly based on 1D or 2D structures. There are few 3D CCPs reported to date because of the great challenge in constructing nonplanar coordination geometries, let alone their applications in multivalent ions storage. Herein, a triphenylene-catecholate-based 3D CCP (Mn-HHTP) is successfully synthesized assembled from the multidentate chelating groups of hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) ligands and their isotropic coordination with Mn2+ ions. The 3D conjugated structure of Mn-HHTP enables an exceptional cycle life of >4000 cycles at 0.5 A g-1 for multivalent Mg2+ ion storage, which is far superior to most organic and inorganic electrode materials. Experimental characterizations combined with theoretical calculations indicate that the semiquinone radicals at the HHTP ligands are the electroactive centers for Mg2+ ions storage. The excellent performance of Mn-HHTP opens a new avenue towards the design of 3D CCPs for long-life rechargeable magnesium-ion batteries.

Green Solvent Processable, Asymmetric Dopant-Free Hole Transport Layer Material for Efficient and Stable n-i-p Perovskite Solar Cells and Modules

The use of dopant-free hole transport layers (HTLs) is critical in stabilizing n-i-p perovskite solar cells (pero-SCs). However, these HTL materials are often processed with toxic solvents, which is not ideal for industrial production. Upon substituting them with green solvents, a trade-off emerges between maintaining the high crystallinity of the HTL materials and ensuring high solubility in the new solvents. In this paper, we designed a novel, linear, organic small molecule, BDT-C8-3O, by introducing an asymmetric polar oligo(ethylene glycol) side chain. This method not only overcomes the solubility limitations in green solvents but also enables stacking the conjugated main chains in two patterns, which further enhances crystallinity and hole mobility. As a result, the n-i-p pero-SCs based on chlorobenzene- or green (natural compound) solvent 3-methylcyclohexanone-processed BDT-C8-3O HTL that without any dopant delivered world-recorded power conversion efficiencies of 24.11 % (certified of 23.82 %) and 23.53 %, respectively. The devices also demonstrated remarkable operational and high-temperature stabilities, maintaining over 84 % and 79.5 % of their initial efficiency for 2000 h, respectively. Encouragingly, dopant-free BDT-C8-3O HTL exhibits significant advantages in large-area fabrication, achieving state-of-the-art PCEs exceeding 20 % for 5×5 cm2 modules (active area: 15.64 cm2 ), even when processed using green solvents.

An immunotherapeutic artificial vitreous body hydrogel to control choroidal melanoma and preserve vision after vitrectomy

Choroidal melanoma, a common intraocular malignant tumor, relies on local radiotherapy and enucleation for treatment. However, cancer recurrence and visual impairment remain important challenges. Here, a therapeutic artificial vitreous body (AVB) hydrogel based on tetra-armed poly(ethylene glycol) was developed to control the recurrence of choroidal melanoma and preserve vision after vitrectomy. AVB loaded with melphalan (Mel) and anti-programmed cell death ligand-1 (αPDL1), was injected after surgical resection in the choroidal melanoma mouse model. Afterwards, the sequentially released Mel and αPDL1 from AVB could achieve a synergistic antitumor effect to inhibit tumor recurrence. AVB with similar physical properties to native vitreous body could maintain the normal structure and visual function of eye after vitrectomy, which has been evidenced by standard examinations of ophthalmology in the mouse model. Thus, the immunotherapeutic AVB may be a promising candidate as an infill biomaterial to assist surgical treatment of intraocular malignant tumors.

Achieving High Fill Factor in Efficient P-i-N Perovskite Solar Cells

Lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have made unprecedented progress, exhibiting great potential for commercialization. Among them, inverted p-i-n PSCs provide outstanding compatibility with flexible substrates, more importantly, with silicon (Si) bottom devices for higher efficiency perovskite-Si tandem solar cells. However, even with recently obtained efficiency over 25%, the investigation of inverted p-i-n PSCs is still behind the n-i-p counterpart so far. Recent progress has demonstrated that the fill factor (FF) in inverted PSCs currently still underperforms relative to open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current density, which requires an in-depth understanding of the mechanism and further research. In this review article, the recent advancements in high FF inverted PSCs by adopting the approaches of interfacial optimization, precursor engineering as well as fabrication techniques to minimize undesirable recombination are summarized. Insufficient carrier extraction and transport efficiency are found to be the main factors that hinder the current FF of inverted PSCs. In addition, insights into the main factors limiting FF and strategies for minimizing series resistance in inverted PSCs are presented. The continuous efforts dedicated to the FF of high-performance inverted devices may pave the way toward commercial applications of PSCs in the near future.

Antibacterial Fusobacterium nucleatum-Mimicking Nanomedicine to Selectively Eliminate Tumor-Colonized Bacteria and Enhance Immunotherapy Against Colorectal Cancer

Clinical evidence indicates that tumor-colonizing bacteria can be closely related to the tumor development and therapeutic responses. Selectively eliminating bacteria within tumors may be an attractive approach to enhance cancer treatment without additional side effects. Herein, it is found that, owing to the high affinity between the membrane protein Fap-2 on Fusobacterium nucleatum and d-galactose-β (1-3)-N-acetyl-d-galactosamine (Gal-GalNAc) overexpressed on colorectal tumor cells, F. nucleatum can colonize in colorectal tumors, as evidenced by both clinical samples and animal tumor models. Notably, F. nucleatum colonized in colorectal tumors can lead to an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, greatly reducing their responses to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy. Inspired by this finding, an F. nucleatum-mimetic nanomedicine is designed by fusing F. nucleatum cytoplasmic membrane (FM) with Colistin-loaded liposomes to achieve selective killing of tumor-colonizing F. nucleatum without affecting gut microbes. As a result, the therapeutic responses of F. nucleatum-colonized tumors to ICB therapies can be successfully restored, as demonstrated in an F. nucleatum-infected subcutaneous CT-26 tumor model, chemically induced spontaneous colorectal cancer models, and MC-38 tumor model. In summary, this work presents an F. nucleatum-mimicking nanomedicine that can selectively eliminate tumor-colonized bacteria, which is promising for enhancing the responses of cancer immunotherapy against F. nucleatum-colonized colorectal cancer.

Nonferrous Ferroptosis Inducer Manganese Molybdate Nanoparticles to Enhance Tumor Immunotherapy

Tumor immunotherapy is an important tool in oncology treatment. However, only a small percentage of patients have an effective immune response to tumor immunotherapy due to the poor infiltration of pro-inflammatory immune cells in immune "cold" tumors and an immunosuppressive network in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Ferroptosis has been widely used as a novel strategy to enhance tumor immunotherapy. Herein, manganese molybdate nanoparticles (MnMoOx NPs) depleted the highly expressed glutathione (GSH) in tumors and inhibited glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) expression, thus triggering ferroptosis, inducing immune cell death (ICD), further releasing damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), and enhancing tumor immunotherapy. Furthermore, MnMoOx NPs can efficiently suppress tumors, promote the maturation of dendritic cells (DCs), infiltrate T cells, and reverse the immunosuppressive microenvironment, making the tumor an immune "hot" tumor. Combination with an immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) (α-PD-L1) further enhanced the anti-tumor effect and inhibited metastases as well. The work provides a new idea for the development of nonferrous inducers of ferroptosis to enhance cancer immunotherapy.

Fluorocarbon Modified Chitosan to Enable Transdermal Immunotherapy for Melanoma Treatment

Despite the rapid development of the immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) in melanoma treatment, the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) still hinders the efficacy of immunotherapy. Recently, using agonists to modulate the TME have presented promising clinical responses in combination with ICB therapies. However, local intratumoral injection as the commonly used administration route for immune agonists would lead to low patient compliance. Herein, it is demonstrated that fluorocarbon modified chitosan (FCS) can self-assemble with immune adjuvant polyriboinosinic:polyribocytidylic acid (poly(I:C)), forming nanoparticles that can penetrate through cutaneous barriers to enable transdermal delivery. FCS/poly(I:C) can efficiently activate various types of cells presented on the transdermal route (through the skin into the TME), leading to IRF3-mediated IFN-β induction in the activated cells for tumor repression. Furthermore, transdermal FCS/poly(I:C) treatment can significantly magnify the efficacy of the programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) blockade in melanoma treatment through activating the immunosuppressive TME. This study approach offered an attractive transdermal approach in combined with ICB therapy for combined immunotherapy, particularly suitable for melanoma treatment.

Two Dimensional Ir-Based Catalysts for Acidic OER

Electrochemical water splitting in acidic media is one of the most promising hydrogen production technologies, yet its practical applications in proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers are limited by the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Iridium (Ir)-based materials are considered as the state-of-the-art catalysts for acidic OER due to their good stability under harsh acidic conditions. However, their activities still have much room for improvement. Two-dimensional (2D) materials are full of the advantages of high-surface area, unique electrical properties, facile surface modification, and good stability, making the development of 2D Ir-based catalysts more attractive for achieving high catalytic performance. In this review, first, the unique advantages of 2D catalysts for electrocatalysis are reviewed. Thereafter, the classification, synthesis methods, and recent OER achievements of 2D Ir-based materials, including pure metals, alloys, oxides, and perovskites are introduced. Finally, the prospects and challenges of developing 2D Ir-based catalysts for future acidic OER are discussed.

Phase Transition-Promoted Rapid Photomechanical Motions of Single Crystals of a Triene Coordination Polymer

Molecular crystals with the ability to transform light energy into macroscopic mechanical motions are a promising class of materials with potential applications in actuating and photonic devices. In regard to such materials, coordination polymers that exhibit dynamic photomechanical motion, associated with a phase transition, are unknown. Herein, we report an intriguing photoactive, one-dimensional ZnII coordination polymer, 1, derived from 1,3,5-tri-4-pyridyl-1,2-ethenylbenzene and 3,5-difluorobenzoate. Single crystals of 1 under UV light irradiation exhibit rapid shrinking and bending, violent bursting-jumping, splitting, and cracking behavior. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and 1 H NMR spectroscopy reveal an unusual photoinduced phase transition involving a single-crystal-to-single-crystal [2+2] cycloaddition reaction that results in photomechanical responses. Interestingly, crystals of 1, which are triclinic with space groupP 1 ‾ ${P\bar{1}}$ , are transformed into a higher symmetry, monoclinic cell with space group C2/c. This process represents a rare example of symmetry enhancement upon photoirradiation. The photomechanical activity is likely due to the sudden release of stress associated with strained molecular geometries and significant solid-state molecular movement arising from cleavage and formation of chemical bonds. A composite membrane fabricated from 1 and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) also displays interesting photomechanical behavior under UV light illumination, indicating the material's potential as a photoactuator.

Rapid Bacterial Detection and Gram-Identification Using Bacterially Activated, Macrophage-Membrane-Coated Nanowired-Si Surfaces in a Microfluidic Device

Bacterially induced sepsis requires rapid bacterial detection and identification. Hours count for critically ill septic patients, while current culture-based detection requires at least 10 h up to several days. Here, we apply a microfluidic device equipped with a bacterially activated, macrophage-membrane-coating on nanowired-Si adsorbent surfaces for rapid, bacterial detection and Gram-identification in bacterially contaminated blood. Perfusion of suspensions of Gram-negative or Gram-positive bacteria through a microfluidic device equipped with membrane-coated adsorbent surfaces detected low (<10 CFU/mL) bacterial levels. Subsequent, in situ fluorescence-staining yielded Gram-identification for guiding antibiotic selection. In mixed Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus suspensions, Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria were detected in the same ratios as those fixed in suspension. Results were validated with a 100% correct score by blinded evaluation (two observers) of 15 human blood samples, spiked with widely different bacterial strains or combinations of strains, demonstrating the potential of the platform for rapid (1.5 h in total) diagnosis of bacterial sepsis.

Perovskite-Derived Bismuth with I- and Cs+ Dual Modification for High-Efficiency CO2 -to-Formate Electrosynthesis and Al-CO2 Batteries

Bi-based materials are one of the most promising candidates for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) to formate; however, the majority of them still suffer from low current density and stability that essentially constrain their potential applications at the industrial scale. Surface modification represents an effective approach to modulate the electrode microenvironment and the relative binding strength of key intermediates. Herein, it is demonstrated that the surface comodification with halides and alkali metal ions from the conversion of Bi-based halide perovskite nanocrystals is a viable strategy to boost the CO2 RR performance of Bi for formate electrosynthesis. Cs3 Bi2 I9 nanocrystals are prepared by a hot-injection method. The as-prepared products feature well-defined hexagonal shape and uniform size distribution. When used as the precatalyst, Cs3 Bi2 I9 nanocrystals are converted to Cs+ and I- comodified Bi. The resultant catalyst exhibits high formate Faradaic efficiency close to 100%, and remarkable partial current density up to 44 mA cm-2 in an H-cell and up to 276 mA cm-2 in a flow cell. Moreover, Cs3 Bi2 I9 is used as the cathode catalyst and paired with an Al anode in an Al-CO2 battery for simultaneous CO2 valorization and power generation.

Functional DNA as a Molecular Tool in Regulating Immunoreceptor-Ligand Interactions

During immune responses, activating ligands would trigger dynamic spatiotemporal organization of immunoreceptors at the cell interface, governing the fate and effector functions of immune cells. To understand the biophysical mechanisms of immunoreceptor signaling, diverse tools, including DNA technologies, have been developed to manipulate receptor-ligand interactions during the immune activation process. With great capability in the controllable assembly of biomolecules, functional DNA-based precise arrangement of immune molecules at cell interfaces has provided a powerful means in revealing the principles of immunoreceptor triggering, even at the single-molecule level. In addition, precisely regulating immunoreceptor-ligand interactions with functional DNA has been applied in immunotherapies of major diseases. This Perspective will focus on the recent advances in exploring immunoreceptor signaling with functional DNA as the molecular tool as well as the applications of functional DNA mediated regulation of immunoreceptor activation. We also outline the challenges and opportunities of applying functional DNA in immune modulation and immunotherapy.

siRNA Delivery against Myocardial Ischemia Reperfusion Injury Mediated by Reversibly Camouflaged Biomimetic Nanocomplexes

siRNA-mediated management of myocardial ischemia reperfusion (IR) injury is greatly hampered by the inefficient myocardial enrichment and cardiomyocyte transfection. Herein, nanocomplexes (NCs) reversibly camouflaged with a platelet-macrophage hybrid membrane (HM) are developed to efficiently deliver Sav1 siRNA (siSav1) into cardiomyocytes, suppressing the Hippo pathway and inducing cardiomyocyte regeneration. The biomimetic BSPC@HM NCs consist of a cationic nanocore assembled from a membrane-penetrating helical polypeptide (P-Ben) and siSav1, a charge-reversal intermediate layer of poly(l-lysine)-cis-aconitic acid (PC), and an outer shell of HM. Due to HM-mediated inflammation homing and microthrombus targeting, intravenously injected BSPC@HM NCs can efficiently accumulate in the IR-injured myocardium, where the acidic inflammatory microenvironment triggers charge reversal of PC to shed off both HM and PC layers and allow the penetration of the exposed P-Ben/siSav1 NCs into cardiomyocytes. In rats and pigs, BSPC@HM NCs remarkably downregulates Sav1 in IR-injured myocardium, promotes myocardium regeneration, suppresses myocardial apoptosis, and recovers cardiac functions. This study reports a bioinspired strategy to overcome the multiple systemic barriers against myocardial siRNA delivery, and holds profound potential for gene therapy against cardiac injuries.

Tandem organic solar cells with 20.6% efficiency enabled by reduced voltage losses

Large voltage losses are the main obstacle for achieving high efficiency in organic solar cells (OSCs). Here we construct ternary OSCs by introducing an asymmetric small molecule acceptor AITC into PBDB-TCl : BTP-eC9 system and demonstrate the effectiveness in simultaneously decreasing energy disorder and non-radiative voltage losses. It is found that the introduction of AITC can modify domain size and increase the degree of crystallinity, which enhances open-circuit voltage and power conversion efficiency (19.1%, certified as 18.9%). Inspiringly, an output efficiency of 20.6% of the constructed tandem OSCs based on PBDB-TCl : AITC : BTP-eC9 ternary active layer output a recorded efficiency of 20.6% (certified as 20.3%), which is the highest value in OSCs field to date. This work demonstrates that decreasing the voltage losses by ternary strategy and constructing of tandem architecture are effective approaches towards improving photovoltaic performance.

Integrated Moist-Thermoelectric Generator for Efficient Waste Steam Energy Utilization

Industrial waste steam is one of the major sources of global energy losses. Therefore, the collection and conversion of waste steam energy into electricity have aroused great interest. Here, a "two-in-one" strategy is reported that combines thermoelectric and moist-electric generation mechanisms for a highly efficient flexible moist-thermoelectric generator (MTEG). The spontaneous adsorption of water molecules and heat in the polyelectrolyte membrane induces the fast dissociation and diffusion of Na⁺ and H⁺ , resulting in the high electricity generation. Thus, the assembled flexible MTEG generates power with a high open-circuit voltage (V_oc ) of 1.81 V (effective area = 1cm² ) and a power density of up to 4.75±0.4 µW cm^-2 . With efficient integration, a 12-unit MTEG can produce a V_oc of 15.97 V, which is superior to most known TEGs and MEGs. The integrated and flexible MTEGs reported herein provide new insights for harvesting energy from industrial waste steam.

Photoelectron Spectroscopy Reveals the Impact of Solvent Additives on Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) Thin Film Formation

The conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is used in a manifold of electronic applications, and controlling its conductivity is often the key to attain a superior device performance. To that end, solvent additives like Triton, ethylene glycol (EG), or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) are regularly incorporated. In our comprehensive study, we prepare PEDOT:PSS thin films with seven different additive combinations and with thicknesses ranging from 6 to 300 nm on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) substrates. We utilize X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to access the PSS-to-PEDOT ratio and the PSS^--to-PSSH ratio in the near-surface region and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) to get the work function (WF). In addition, the morphology and conductivity of these samples are obtained. We found that the WF of the prepared thin films for each combination becomes saturated at a thickness of around 50 nm and thinner films show a lower WF due to the inferior coverage on the ITO. Furthermore, the WF shows a better correlation with the PSS^--to-PSSH ratio than the commonly used PSS-to-PEDOT ratio as PSS^- can directly affect the surface dipole. By adding solvent additives, a dramatic increase in the conductivity is observed for all PEDOT:PSS films, especially when DMSO is involved. Moreover, adding the additive Triton (surfactant) helps to suppress the WF fluctuation for most films of each additive combination and contributes to weaken the surface dipole, eventually leading to a lower and thickness-independent WF.

Accelerating the Discovery of Metastable IrO2 for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction by the Self-Learning-Input Graph Neural Network

The discovery of active and stable catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is vital to improve water electrolysis. To date, rutile iridium dioxide IrO₂ is the only known OER catalyst in the acidic solution, while its poor activity restricts its practical viability. Herein, we propose a universal graph neural network, namely, CrystalGNN, and introduce a dynamic embedding layer to self-update atomic inputs during the training process. Based on this framework, we train a model to accurately predict the formation energies of 10,500 IrO₂ configurations and discover 8 unreported metastable phases, among which C2/m-IrO₂ and P62-IrO₂ are identified as excellent electrocatalysts to reach the theoretical OER overpotential limit at their most stable surfaces. Our self-learning-input CrystalGNN framework exhibits reliable accuracy, generalization, and transferring ability and successfully accelerates the bottom-up catalyst design of novel metastable IrO₂ to boost the OER activity.

A Heterocatalytic Metal-Organic Framework to Stimulate Dispersal and Macrophage Combat with Infectious Biofilms

Eradication of infectious biofilms is becoming increasingly difficult due to the growing number of antibiotic-resistant strains. This necessitates development of nonantibiotic-based, antimicrobial approaches. To this end, we designed a heterocatalytic metal-organic framework composed of zirconium 1,4-dicarboxybenzene (UiO-66) with immobilized Pt nanoparticles (Pt-NP/UiO-66). Pt-NP/UiO-66 enhanced singlet-oxygen generation compared with Pt nanoparticles or UiO-66, particularly in an acidic environment. Singlet-oxygen generation degraded phosphodiester bonds present in eDNA gluing biofilms together and therewith dispersed biofilms. Remaining biofilms possessed a more open structure. Concurrently, Pt-NP/UiO-66 stimulated macrophages to adapt a more M1-like, "fighting" phenotype, moving faster toward their target bacteria and showing increased bacterial killing. As a combined effect of biofilm dispersal and macrophage polarization, a subcutaneous Staphylococcus aureus biofilm in mice was more readily eradicated by Pt-NP/UiO-66 than by Pt nanoparticles or UiO-66. Therewith, heterocatalytic Pt-NP/UiO-66 metal-organic frameworks constitute a nonantibiotic-based strategy to weaken protective matrices and disperse infectious biofilms, while strengthening macrophages in bacterial killing.

Oxygen-supplied mesoporous carbon nanoparticles for enhanced photothermal/photodynamic synergetic therapy against antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections

Pandemic and epidemic spread of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections would result in a huge number of fatalities globally. To combat antibiotic-resistant pathogens, new antimicrobial strategies should be explored and developed to confront bacteria without acquiring or increasing drug-resistance. Here, oxygen saturated perfluorohexane (PFH)-loaded mesoporous carbon nanoparticles (CIL@ICG/PFH@O2) with photothermal therapy (PTT) and enhanced photodynamic therapy (PDT) utility are developed for antibacterial applications. Ionic liquid groups are grafted onto the surface of mesoporous carbon nanoparticles, followed by anion-exchange with the anionic photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG) and loading oxygen saturated PFH to prepare CIL@ICG/PFH@O2. These CIL@ICG/PFH@O2 nanoparticles exhibit effective PTT and enhanced PDT properties simultaneously upon 808 nm light irradiation. In vitro assays demonstrate that CIL@ICG/PFH@O2 shows a synergistic antibacterial action against antibiotic-resistant pathogens (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and kanamycin-resistant Escherichia coli). Moreover, CIL@ICG/PFH@O2 could effectively kill drug-resistant bacteria in vivo to relieve inflammation and eliminate methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus-wound infection under NIR irradiation, and the released oxygen can increase collagen deposition, epithelial tissue formation and blood vessel formation to promote wound healing while enhancing the PDT effect. This study proposes a platform with enhanced PTT/PDT effects for effective, controlled, and precise treatment of topical drug-resistant bacterial infections.

Effective Design Strategy of Small Bipolar Molecules through Fused Conjugation toward 2.5 V Based Redox Flow Batteries

Using bipolar redox-active molecules (BRMs) as active materials is a practical way to address electrolyte crossover and resultant unpredictable side reactions in redox-flow batteries. However, the development of BRMs is greatly hindered by difficulties in finding new molecules from limited redox-active moieties and in achieving high cell voltage to compete with existing flow battery chemistries. This study proposes a strategy for design of high-voltage BRMs using fused conjugation that regulates the redox potential of integrated redox-active moieties. As a demonstration, quaternary N and ketone redox moieties are used to construct a new BRM that shows a prominent voltage gap with good electrochemical stability. A symmetrical redox-flow cell based on this molecule exhibits a high voltage of 2.5 V and decent cycling stability. This study provides a general strategy for designing new BRMs that may enrich the cell chemistries of organic redox-flow batteries.

Termination-Accelerated Electrochemical Nitrogen Fixation on Single-Atom Catalysts Supported by MXenes

The synthesis of ammonia (NH₃) from nitrogen (N₂) under ambient conditions is of great significance but hindered by the lack of highly efficient catalysts. By performing first-principles calculations, we have investigated the feasibility for employing a transition metal (TM) atom, supported on Ti₃C₂T₂ MXene with O/OH terminations, as a single-atom catalyst (SAC) for electrochemical nitrogen reduction. The potential catalytic performance of TM single atoms is evaluated by their adsorption behavior on the MXene, together with their ability to bind N₂ and to desorb NH₃ molecules. Of importance, the OH terminations on Ti₃C₂T₂ MXene can effectively enhance the N₂ adsorption and decrease the NH₃ adsorption for single atoms. Based on proposed criteria for promising SACs, our calculations further demonstrate that the Ni/Ti₃C₂O_0.19(OH)_1.81 exhibits reasonable thermodynamics and kinetics toward electrochemical nitrogen reduction.

Recent advances in upconversion nanoparticle-based nanocomposites for gas therapy

Gas therapy has attracted wide attention for the treatment of various diseases. However, a controlled gas release is highly important for biomedical applications. Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) can precisely convert the long wavelength of light to ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) light in gas therapy for the controlled gas release owing to their unique upconversion luminescence (UCL) ability. In this review, we mainly summarized the recent progress of UCNP-based nanocomposites in gas therapy. The gases NO, O2, H2, H2S, SO2, and CO play an essential role in the physiological and pathological processes. The UCNP-based gas therapy holds great promise in cancer therapy, bacterial therapy, anti-inflammation, neuromodulation, and so on. Furthermore, the limitations and prospects of UCNP-based nanocomposites for gas therapy are also discussed.

Wafer-Scale Fabrication of Silicon Nanocones via Controlling Catalyst Evolution in All-Wet Metal-Assisted Chemical Etching

All-wet metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) is a simple and low-cost method to fabricate one-dimensional Si nanostructures. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate Si nanocones (SiNCs) with this method. Here, we achieved wafer-scale fabrication of SiNC arrays through an all-wet MACE process. The key to fabricate SiNCs is to control the catalyst evolution from deposition to etching stages. Different from conventional MACE processes, large-size Ag particles by solution deposition are obtained through increasing AgNO₃ concentration or extending the reaction time in the seed solution. Then, the large-size Ag particles are simultaneously etched during the Si etching process in an etching solution with a high H₂O₂ concentration due to the accelerated cathode process and inhibited anode process in Ag/Si microscopic galvanic cells. The successive decrease of Ag particle sizes causes the proportionate increase of diameters of the etched Si nanostructures, forming SiNC arrays. The SiNC arrays exhibit a stronger light-trapping ability and better photoelectrochemical performance compared with Si nanowire arrays. SiNCs were fabricated by using n-type 1-10 Ω cm Si(100) wafers in this work. Though the specific experimental conditions for preparing SiNCs may differ when using different Si wafers, the summarized diagram will still provide valuable guidance for morphology control of Si nanostructures in MACE processes.

Recent progress in thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters for nondoped organic light-emitting diodes

Nondoped organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have drawn immense attention due to their merits of process simplicity, reduced fabrication cost, etc. To realize high-performance nondoped OLEDs, all electrogenerated excitons should be fully utilized. The thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) mechanism can theoretically realize 100% internal quantum efficiency (IQE) through an effective upconversion process from nonradiative triplet excitons to radiative singlet ones. Nevertheless, exciton quenching, especially related to triplet excitons, is generally very serious in TADF-based nondoped OLEDs, significantly hindering the pace of development. Enormous efforts have been devoted to alleviating the annoying exciton quenching process, and a number of TADF materials for highly efficient nondoped devices have been reported. In this review, we mainly discuss the mechanism, exciton leaking channels, and reported molecular design strategies of TADF emitters for nondoped devices. We further classify their molecular structures depending on the functional A groups and offer an outlook on their future prospects. It is anticipated that this review can entice researchers to recognize the importance of TADF-based nondoped OLEDs and provide a possible guide for their future development.

Highly stable and bright blue light-emitting diodes based on carbon dots with a chemically inert surface

The manufacture of blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) has always been a tough problem to solve in the display and illumination fields. Inorganic/organic semiconductors and carbon dots (CDs) with a wide band gap still face obstacles such as a low external quantum efficiency (EQE) and poor stability. Herein, we synthesized highly stable and blue emission CDs with a chemically inert surface, and the photoluminescence (PL) peak (in ultra-pure water) of which is located at 446 nm with an absolute PL quantum yield (PLQY) of 26.4%. The LEDs based blue emission CDs exhibit an electroluminescence (EL) peak located at 456 nm and a high brightness of 223 cd m^-2 with an EQE of 0.856%. The Commission Internationale del'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates are located at (0.21, 0.23) and the device lifetime with 65% brightness (T ₆₅) reaches over 217 h because of the chemically inert surface of the CDs. The results mean the devices are the most stable CDs-LEDs reported to date. This work represents a novel route for the preparation of low cost, highly stable and very bright CDs-LEDs with a short wavelength emission.

Perovskite indoor photovoltaics: opportunity and challenges

With the rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoTs), photovoltaics (PVs) has a vast market supply gap of billion dollars. Moreover, it also puts forward new requirements for the development of indoor photovoltaic devices (IPVs). In recent years, PVs represented by organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs), silicon solar cells, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), etc. considered for use in IoTs mechanisms have also been extensively investigated. However, there are few reports on the indoor applications of perovskite devices, even though it has the advantages of better performance. In fact, perovskite has the advantages of better bandgap adjustability, lower cost, and easier preparation of large-area on flexible substrates, compared with other types of IPVs. This review starts from the development status of IoTs and investigates the cost, technology, and future trends of IPVs. We believe that perovskite photovoltaics is more suitable for indoor applications and review some strategies for fabricating high-performance perovskite indoor photovoltaic devices (IPVs). Finally, we also put forward a perspective for the long-term development of perovskite IPVs.

Rejuvenation of Senescent Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stromal Cells by Pulsed Triboelectric Stimulation

Stem cell senescence contributes to stem cell exhaustion and drives various aging-associated disorders. However, strategies to rejuvenate senescent stem cells are limited. The present study proposes an approach based on triboelectric stimulation to rejuvenate senescent bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSCs) by fabricating a pulsed triboelectric nanogenerator (P-TENG) that can produce stable pulsed current output unaffected by the triggered frequency. The senescence phenotypes of aged BMSCs are reversed by triboelectric stimulation at 30 µA at 1.5 Hz. Triboelectric stimulation enhances the proliferation of aged BMSCs and increases their pluripotency and differentiation capacity. Additionally, mechanistic investigations reveal that pulsed triboelectric stimulation by P-TENG rejuvenates senescent BMSCs by enhancing MDM2-dependent p53 degradation, which is demonstrated by loss-of-function studies of MDM2 and p53. Overall, this study identifies a new approach for the rejuvenation of senescent BMSCs and describes a promising therapeutic intervention for many diseases associated with aged BMSCs.

Microfluidic synthesis of high-valence programmable atom-like nanoparticles for reliable sensing

Synthesis of programmable atom-like nanoparticles (PANs) with high valences and high yields remains a grand challenge. Here, a novel synthetic strategy of microfluidic galvanic displacement (μ-GD) coupled with microfluidic DNA nanoassembly is advanced for synthesis of single-stranded DNA encoder (SSE)-encoded PANs for reliable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing. Notably, PANs with high valences (e.g., n-valence, n = 12) are synthesized with high yields (e.g., >80%) owing to the effective control of interfacial reactions sequentially occurring in the microfluidic system. On the basis of this, we present the first demonstration of a PAN-based automatic analytical platform, in which sensor construction, sample loading and on-line monitoring are carried out in the microfluidic system, thus guaranteeing reliable quantitative measurement. In the proof-of-concept demonstration, accurate determination of tetracycline (TET) in serum and milk samples with a high recovery close to 100% and a low relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 5.0% is achieved by using this integrated analytical platform.
