Boosting circularly polarized luminescence by optimizing off-centering octahedral distortion in zero-dimensional hybrid indium-antimony halides

Chiral zero-dimensional hybrid metal halides (0D HMHs) are being extensively studied as they can directly generate circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs), yet improving their luminescence dissymmetry factor (g lum) remains a challenge. This study proposes a general strategy to boost the g lum value of chiral 0D HMHs by optimizing the off-centering distortion of inorganic octahedra. Accordingly, (R/S-MBA)2(2MA)In0.95Sb0.05Cl6 (MBA = α-methylbenzylammonium, 2MA = dimethylamine) and (R/S-MBA)2(3MA)In0.95Sb0.05Cl6 (3MA = trimethylamine) with near-unity PLQYs are accordingly synthesized. With increasing the from 0.012 to 0.020, the |g lum| is accordingly increased from 7.8 × 10-3 to 2.0 × 10-2. Notably, the |g lum| can be further boosted to an impressive value of 3.8 × 10-2 while maintaining near-unity PLQYs by continuously increasing the . Experimental results reveal that the choice of achiral ligands and varied Sb3+ dopant concentrations can modulate the distribution and strength of hydrogen bonds around indium-antimony halogen octahedra, respectively, thus regulating the parameter of octahedra in 0D hybrid metal halides. Additionally, light-emitting diodes with a polarization of 1.6% are fabricated. This work sheds light on the relationship between the distortion of inorganic octahedra and the g lum value.

Rigid Phase Formation and Sb3+ Doping of Tin (IV) Halide Hybrids toward Photoluminescence Enhancement and Tuning for Anti-Counterfeiting and Information Encryption

Multi-excitonic emitting materials in luminescent metal halides are emerging candidates for anti-counterfeiting and information encryption applications. Herein, ATPP2SnCl6 (ATPP=acetonyltriphenylphosphonium) phase was designed and synthesized by rationally choosing emissive organic reagent of ATPPCl and non-toxic stable metal ions of Sn4+, and Sb3+ was further doped into ATPP2SnCl6 to tune the photoluminescence with external self-trapped excitons emission. The derived non-toxic ATPP2SnCl6 shows multi-excitonic luminescent centers verified by optical study and differential charge-density from density functional theory calculations. Incorporation of Sb3+ dopants and the increasing concentrations induce the efficient energy transfer therein, thus enhancing photoluminescence quantum yield from 5.1 % to 73.8 %. The multi-excitonic emission inspires the creation of information encryption and decryption by leveraging the photoluminescence from ATPPCl to ATPP2SnCl6 host and ATPP2SnCl6 : Sb3+. This study facilitates the anti-counterfeiting application by employing solution-processable luminescent metal halides materials with excitation-dependent PL properties.

Recent strategies for triplet-state emission regulation toward non-lead organic-inorganic metal halides

Organic-inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) have strengthened the development of triplet-state emission materials due to their excellent luminescence performance. Due to the inherent toxicity of lead (Pb) significantly limiting its further advancement, numerous studies have been conducted to regulate triplet-state emission of non-Pb OIMHs, and several feasible strategies have been proposed. However, most of the non-Pb OIMHs reported have a relatively short lifetime or a low luminescence efficiency, not in favor of their application. In this review, we provide a summary of recent reports on the regulation of triplet-state emissions in non-Pb OIMHs to provide benefits for the design of innovative luminescent materials. Our focus is primarily on exploring the internal and external factors that influence the triplet-state emission. Starting from the luminescence mechanism, the current strategies for regulating triplet-state emissions are summarized. Moreover, by manipulating these strategies, it becomes feasible to achieve triplet-state emissions that span a range of colors from blue to red, and even extend into the near-infrared spectrum with high luminescence efficiency, while also increasing their lifetimes. This review not only provides fresh insights into the advancement of triplet-state emissions in OIMHs but also integrates experimental and theoretical perspectives to illuminate the trajectory of future research endeavors.

High External Quantum Efficiency and Dual-Band Emission of (C7H18N)3Sb2Cl9 for Sensitivity Temperature Sensing

Organic-inorganic hybrid halides have gained attention for their ease of processing and remarkable optoelectronic properties. However, the relationship between the structure and optical properties requires further exploration. In this study, the butyltrimethylammonium cation (C7H18N+) was chosen, and seven compounds were synthesized: (C7H18N)3Sb2X9 (X = Cl, Br), (C7H18N)3Bi2X9 (X = Cl, Br, I), and (C7H18N)(C2H8N)MBr5 (M = Sb, Bi). Crystals with a single organic cation exhibit a zero-dimensional structure, while the introduction of dimethylamine ions increases the crystal dimensionality from zero-dimensional (C7H18N)3Sb2Br9 to one-dimensional (C7H18N)(C2H8N)SbBr5. Under 372 nm excitation, (C7H18N)3Sb2Cl9 showed broad orange-red single-band emission with a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 88.4% and an external quantum efficiency of up to 56.9%. A white light-emitting diode based on (C7H18N)3Sb2Cl9 achieved a high color rendering index of 96.3. Moreover, dual-band emission was observed in (C7H18N)3Sb2Cl9 under 308 nm excitation, which exhibits an absolute temperature sensitivity of 1.96 × 10-3 K-1 (320 K), and a flexible film was prepared by incorporating polydimethylsiloxane. This shows the promise of hybrid metal halides as photoluminescent materials and their possibilities for temperature sensing.

Glass Disorder Modulated Luminescence in Zero-Dimensional Antimony-Chloride Coplanar Dimers for Optical Anti-counterfeiting

Zero-dimensional metal halides have received wide attention due to their structural diversity, strong quantum confinement, and associated excellent photoluminescence properties. A reversible and tunable luminescence would be desirable for applications such as anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, and artificial intelligence. Yet, these materials are underexplored, with little known about their luminescence tuning mechanisms. Here we report a pyramidal coplanar dimer, (TBA)Sb2Cl7 (TBA = tetrabutylammonium), showing broadband emission wavelength tuning (585-650 nm) by simple thermal treatment. We attribute the broad color change to structural disorder induced by varying the heat treatment temperatures. Increasing the heating temperature transitions the material from long-range ordered crystalline phase to highly disordered glassy phase. The latter exhibits stronger electron-phonon coupling, enhancing the self-trapped exciton emission efficiency. The work provides a new material platform for manifold optical anti-counterfeiting applications and sheds light on the emission color tuning mechanisms for further design of stimuli-responsive materials.

Self-Trapped Exciton Emission in Highly Polar 0D Hybrid Ammonium/Hydronium-Based Perovskites Triggered by Antimony Doping

Various monovalent cations are employed to construct metal halide perovskites with various structures and functionalities. However, perovskites based on highly polar A-site cations have seldom been reported. Here, a novel hybrid 0D (NH4)x(OH3)3-xInCl6 perovskite with highly polar hydronium OH3+ cations is introduced in this study. Upon doping with Sb3+, hybrid 0D (NH4)x(OH3)3-xInCl6 single crystals exhibited highly efficient broadband yellowish-green (550 nm) and red (630 nm) dual emissions with a PLQY of 86%. The dual emission arises due to Sb3+ occupying two sites within the crystal lattice that possess different polarization environments, leading to distinct Stokes shift energies. The study revealed that lattice polarity plays a significant role in the self-trapped exciton emission of Sb3+-doped perovskites, contributing up to 25% of the Stokes shift energy for hybrid 0D (NH4)x(OH3)3-xInCl6:Sb3+ as a secondary source, in addition to the Jahn-Teller deformation. These findings highlight the potential of Sb3+-doped perovskites for achieving tunable broadband emission and underscore the importance of lattice polarity in determining the emission properties of perovskite materials.

Multisite Fine-Tuning in Hybrid Cadmium Halides Enables Wide Range Emissions for Anti-Counterfeiting

Achieving tunable emissions spanning the spectrum, from blue to near-infrared (NIR) light, within a single component is a formidable challenge with significant implication, particularly in tailoring multicolor luminescence for anti-counterfeiting purposes. In this study, we demonstrate a broad spectrum of emissions, covering blue to red and extending into NIR light in [BPy]2CdX4 : xSb3+ (BPy=Butylpyridinium; X=Cl, Br; x=0 to 0.08) through precise multisite structural fine-tuning. Notably, the multicolor emissions from [BPy]2CdBr4 : Sb3+ manifest a distinctive pattern, transitioning from blue to yellow in tandem with the host [BPy]2CdBr4 and further extending from yellow to NIR with its homologous [BPy]2CdCl4 : Sb3+, resulting in the simultaneous presence of intersecting and independent emission colors. Detailed modulation of chemical composition enables partial luminescence switching, facilitating the creation of diverse patterns with multicolor luminescence by employing [BPy]2CdX4 : xSb3+ as phosphors. This study for the first time successfully implements several groups of tunable emission colors in a single matrix via multisite fine-tuning. Such an effective strategy not only develops the specific relationships between tunable emissions and adjustable compositions, but also introduces a cost-effective and straightforward approach to achieving unique, high-level, plentiful-color and multiple-information-storage labels for advanced anti-counterfeiting applications.

Bright Circularly Polarized Mechanoluminescence from 0D Hybrid Manganese Halides

Hybrid metal halides (HMHs) with efficient circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have application prospects in many fields, due to their abundant host-guest structures and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). However, CPLs in HMHs are predominantly excited by light or electricity, limiting their use in multivariate environments. It is necessary to explore a novel excitation method to extend the application of chiral HMHs as smart stimuli-responsive optical materials. In this work, an enantiomeric pair of 0D hybrid manganese bromides, [H2(2R,4R)-(+)/(2S,4S)-(-)-2,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)pentane]MnBr4 [(R/S)-1] is presented, which exhibits efficient CPL emissions with near-unity PLQYs and high dissymmetry factors of ± 2.0 × 10-3. Notably, (R/S)-1 compounds exhibit unprecedented and bright circularly polarized mechanoluminescence (CPML) emissions under mechanical stimulation. Moreover, (R/S)-1 possess high mechanical force sensitivities with mechanoluminescence (ML) emissions detectable under 0.1 N force stimulation. Furthermore, this ML emission exhibits an extraordinary antithermal quenching effect in the temperature range of 300-380 K, which is revealed to originate from a thermal activation energy compensation mechanism from trap levels to Mn(II) 4T1 level. Based on their intriguing optical properties, these compounds as chiral force-responsive materials are demonstrated in multilevel confidential information encryption.

Excitation-Selective and Double-Emissive Lead-Free Binary Hybrid Metal Halides for White Light-Emitting Diode and X-Ray Scintillation

Zero-dimensional (0D) organic metal halides comprising heterogeneous metal cations in single phase can achieve multiple luminous emissions enabling them toward multifunctional light-emitting applications. Herein, A novel single crystal of (C8H20N)4SbMnCl9 containing two luminescent centers of [SbCl5]2- pentahedrons and [MnCl4]2- tetrahedrons is reported. The large distance between Sb-Sb, Mn-Mn, and Sb-Mn as well as theory calculation indicate negligible interaction between individual centers, thus endowing (C8H20N)4SbMnCl9 with excitation-dependable and efficient luminescence. Under near-UV excitation, only orange emission originates from self-trapped excitons recombination in [SbCl5]2- pentahedron occurs with photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 91.5%. Under blue-light excitation, only green emission originating from 4T1-6A1 transition of Mn2+ in [MnCl4]2- tetrahedrons occurs with PLQY of 66.8%. Interestingly, upon X-ray illumination, both emissions can be fully achieved due to the high-energy photon absorption. Consequently, (C8H20N)4SbMnCl9 is employed as phosphors to fabricate white light-emitting diodes optically pumped by n-UV chip and blue-chip thanks to its excitation-dependable property. Moreover, it also shows promising performance as X-ray scintillator with low detection limit of 60.79 nGyair S-1, steady-state light yield ≈54% of commerical scintillaotr LuAG:Ce, high resolution of 13.5 lp mm-1 for X-ray imaging. This work presents a new structural design to fabricate 0D hybrids with multicolor emissions.

Revealing the Structure-Luminescence Relationship in Robust Sn(IV)-Based Metal Halides by Sb3+ Doping

Low-dimensional hybrid metal halides are an emerging class of materials with highly efficient photoluminescence (PL), but the problems of poor stability remain challenging. Sn(IV)-based metal halides show robust structure but exhibit poor PL properties, and the structure-luminescence relationship is elusive. Herein, two Sn(IV)-based metal halides (compounds 1 and 2) with the same constituent ((C6H16N2)SnCl6) but different crystal structures have been prepared, which however show poor PL properties at room temperature due to the absence of active ns2 electrons. To improve materials' PL properties, Sb3+ with active 5s2 electrons was embedded into the lattice of Sn4+-based hosts. As a result, efficient emissions were achieved for Sb3+-doped compounds 1 and 2 with a maximum PL efficiency of 14.28 and 62%, respectively. Experimental and calculation results reveal that the smaller distorted lattice structure of the host could result in the blueshift of the emission from Sb3+. Thus, a tunable color from red to orange was realized. Benefiting from the broadband efficient emission from Sb3+-doped compound 2, an efficient white light-emitting diode with a high color rendering index of up to 92.3 was fabricated to demonstrate its lighting application potential. This work promotes the understanding of the influence of robust Sn(IV)-based host lattice on the PL properties of Sb3+, advancing the development of environmentally friendly, low-cost, and high-efficiency Sn(IV)-based metal halides.

Unusual Thermal Quenching of Photoluminescence from an Organic-Inorganic Hybrid [MnBr4 ]2- -based Halide Mediated by Crystalline-Crystalline Phase Transition

The ability to generate and manipulate photoluminescence (PL) behavior has been of primary importance for applications in information security. Excavating novel optical effects to create more possibilities for information encoding has become a continuous challenge. Herein, we present an unprecedented PL temporary quenching that highly couples with thermodynamic phase transition in a hybrid crystal (DMML)2 MnBr4 (DMML=N,N-dimethylmorpholinium). Such unusual PL behavior originates from the anomalous variation of [MnBr4 ]2- tetrahedrons that leads to non-radiation recombination near the phase transition temperature of 340 K. Remarkably, the suitable detectable temperature, narrow response window, high sensitivity, and good cyclability of this PL temporary quenching will endow encryption applications with high concealment, operational flexibility, durability, and commercial popularization. Profited from these attributes, a fire-new optical encryption model is devised to demonstrate high confidential information security. This unprecedented optical effect would provide new insights and paradigms for the development of luminescent materials to enlighten future information encryption.

Antimony-Triggered Tunable White Light Emission in Lead-Free Zero-Dimensional Indium Halide with Ultrastable CCT of White Light Emitting Diodes

A highly efficient and easily tunable luminescence is significant for solid-state luminescent (SSL) materials. However, achieving a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) close to unity and tuning the emission remain challenging tasks. Metal doping strategies enable resolution of these issues. Herein, we report the preparation of a novel organic-inorganic lead-free indium-based metal halide hybrid (MP)3InCl6•EtOH (MP = C4H10ON) with a typical zero-dimension structure. When excited at 320 nm, (MP)3InCl6•EtOH exhibits a dual emission band at 420 and 600 nm, which originates from the organic cation [MP] and the [InCl6]3- octahedral unit. The photoluminescence can be significantly enhanced through Sb3+ doping, resulting in an increase in PLQY from 0.78% to near unity. Multiple emission color tunings have been achieved by regulating the Sb doping level and the radiation wavelength, resulting in a change in emission color from blue → white → orange. Optical characterizations reveal that the significantly enhanced emission centered at 600 nm can be attributed to more efficient absorption, closely associated with an additional 1S0 → 3P1 transition in the inorganic octahedron [In(Sb)Cl6]3- due to Sb3+ doping. With its excellent optical performance, a white light emitting diode (WLED) has been successfully fabricated by coating the mixture of (MP)3InCl6•EtOH:15%Sb3+ with blue phosphor BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ onto a UV LED chip. The WLED device exhibits perfect white light emission with regard to the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) coordinates of (0.36, 0.34). Significantly, the WLED device maintains a stable correlated color temperature (CCT) range of 4119-4393 K and CIE coordinates (x: 0.37-0.34, y: 0.35-0.33) as the driven current varies from 20 to 200 mA, demonstrating outstanding stability across different power levels. This work not only presents a novel system for achieving remarkably enhanced luminescent performance and tuning emission bands in 0D metal halides but also represents a significant step toward achieving resistance to color drifting for stable WLEDs.

Zero-Dimensional Hybrid Antimony Chloride with Near-Unity Broad-Band Orange-Red Emission toward Solid-State Lighting

Zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid metal halides are attractive owing to their distinctive structure as well as photoluminescence (PL) characteristics. To discover 0D hybrid metal halides with high photoluminescence quantum yield and good stability is of great significance for white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Herein, a novel hybrid antimony chloride (CTP)2SbCl5 is synthesized, which shows a bright broad-band orange-red emission peaking at 620 nm under the low energy excitation (365 nm), achieving an excellent photoluminescence quantum yield of 96.8%. In addition, (CTP)2SbCl5 shows an additional emission peaking at 470 nm when excited at high energy (323 nm). PL spectra and density functional theory results demonstrate that the observed dual-band emission originates from the singlet and triplet self-trapped excitons confined in isolated [SbCl5]2- square pyramids. Moreover, (CTP)2SbCl5 presents relatively superior air stability, and the PL intensity still maintains 78% of the initial PL intensity when exposed to the air for above 2 weeks. Benefiting from high-efficiency PL emission and good stability of (CTP)2SbCl5, a stable warm white LED device with a 92.3% color rendering index was prepared by coating blue phosphor BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+, green (Sr,Ba)2SiO4:Eu2+, and orange-red (CTP)2SbCl5 on a 365 nm LED chip. This work provides an efficient luminescent material and also demonstrates the potential application of 0D hybrid antimony chloride in solid-state lighting.

0D hybrid indium halide as a highly efficient X-ray scintillation and ultra-sensitive fluorescent probe

Halide perovskite nanocrystal (PNC) of 3D CsPbX3 as a scintillator has aroused intensive attention with advanced applications in radiation detection and X-ray imaging. However, the low light yield and serious toxicity of Pb2+ severely hinder advanced optoelectronic applications. To reduce these fatal shortcomings, a family of new environmentally friendly 0D hybrid lead-free indium halides of [DADPA]InX6·H2O (DADPA = 3,3'-diaminodipropylamine; X = Cl and Br) was prepared. Upon UV excitation, these halides display strong broadband yellow-orange light emissions, and the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) can be optimized up to near unity through the Sb3+-doping strategy. Significantly, high PLQY, negligible self-absorption and low attenuation ability toward X-ray render extraordinary scintillation performance with a high light yield of 51 875 photons MeV-1 and ultralow detection limit of 98.3 nGyair s-1, which is far superior to typical 3D PNC scintillators. Additionally, the ultra-high spatial resolution of 25.15 lp mm-1, negligible afterglow time (2.75 ms) and robust radiant stability demonstrates excellent X-ray imaging performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on X-ray scintillation based on 0D indium halide materials.

Second-Harmonic Generation in Homochiral Antimony Halides Directed by l-Histidine

Three homochiral organic-inorganic hybrid antimony halides, namely, (L-Hhis)2Sb2Cl8 (1), L-H2his·SbBr5·H2O (2), and (L-H2his)2·Sb3I13·4H2O (3), were prepared to investigate the structure-directing roles of l-histidine (l-his). These compounds feature dimeric, chainlike, and trimeric structures with different optical bandgaps. They display second-harmonic-generation (SHG) responses of 0.1, 2.6, and 0.05 times that of KH2PO4, respectively. Theoretical calculations for compound 2 were carried out to get insights into its structure-property relationship.

High Emission Efficiency and Thermal Stability in Zero-Dimensional Hybrid Zinc Halide as a Blue Light Emitter

Exploring highly efficient blue-emissive lead-free halide materials is a significant and challenging objective in the study of luminescent materials. This study reports the synthesis of a new zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid zinc halide of [CYP]ZnBr4 (CYP = 1-cyclohexylpiperazine) containing an isolated [ZnBr4]2- tetrahedron. [CYP]ZnBr4 exhibits strong blue light emission with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 79.22%, surpassing all previously reported 0D zinc halide counterparts. According to the theoretical and experimental studies, the blue light emission is attributed to intrinsic self-trapped excitons resulting from strong electron-phonon coupling and structural deformation. Importantly, [CYP]ZnBr4 demonstrates excellent structural and luminescence stability toward high temperatures (180 °C) over at least half a month. High luminescence efficiency and stability enable [CYP]ZnBr4 to be an efficient blue phosphor to fabricate white light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which produces high-quality white light with a color rendering index (CRI) of 93.1 and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5304 K, closely resembling natural sunlight. This white LED also exhibits consistent performance and stability across different drive currents, suggesting the potential for high-power optoelectronic applications. Overall, this study paves the way for the utilization of 0D hybrid halides in advanced solid-state lighting applications.

Multi-Mode Photoluminescence Regulation in a Zero-Dimensional Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Metal Halide Perovskite─[(CH3)4N]2SnCl6

Metal ion-doped zero-dimensional halide perovskites provide good platforms to generate broadband emission and explore the fundamental dynamics of emission regulations. Recently, Sb3+-doped zero-dimensional halide perovskites have attracted considerable attention for the high quantum yield of yellow emission; however, the triplet state recombination is activated and the singlet state emission is usually absent. Herein, we fabricate an Sb3+-doped zero-dimensional [(CH3)4N]2SnCl6 perovskite that can induce singlet and triplet emission. Density functional theory calculation shows that there are some overlaps between the highest occupied molecular orbitals and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, which may induce a large energy separation between the lowest excited triplet states (T1) and the lowest excited singlet states (S1) [ΔE(S1 - T1)], impeding all the carriers' transfer from the singlet state to the triplet state. As a result, the reserved singlet emission together with the triplet emission can be regulated by excitation wavelength in situ. In addition, different Bi3+ ratios are co-doped into Sb3+@[(CH3)4N]2SnCl6, resulting in a photoluminescence ex situ regulation. Single-phase white light LED and optical anti-counterfeiting are developed further.

An all-in-one nanoprinting approach for the synthesis of a nanofilm library for unclonable anti-counterfeiting applications

In addition to causing trillion-dollar economic losses every year, counterfeiting threatens human health, social equity and national security. Current materials for anti-counterfeiting labelling typically contain toxic inorganic quantum dots and the techniques to produce unclonable patterns require tedious fabrication or complex readout methods. Here we present a nanoprinting-assisted flash synthesis approach that generates fluorescent nanofilms with physical unclonable function micropatterns in milliseconds. This all-in-one approach yields quenching-resistant carbon dots in solid films, directly from simple monosaccharides. Moreover, we establish a nanofilm library comprising 1,920 experiments, offering conditions for various optical properties and microstructures. We produce 100 individual physical unclonable function patterns exhibiting near-ideal bit uniformity (0.492 ± 0.018), high uniqueness (0.498 ± 0.021) and excellent reliability (>93%). These unclonable patterns can be quickly and independently read out by fluorescence and topography scanning, greatly improving their security. An open-source deep-learning model guarantees precise authentication, even if patterns are challenged with different resolutions or devices.

High-Temperature, Reversible, and Robust Thermochromic Fluorescence Based on Rb2 MnBr4 (H2 O)2 for Anti-Counterfeiting

Thermochromic fluorescent materials (TFMs) characterized by noticeable emission color variation with temperature have attracted pervasive attention for their frontier application in stimulus-response and optical encryption technologies. However, existing TFMs typically suffer from weak PL reversibility as well as limited mild operating temperature and severe temperature PL quenching. PL switching under extreme conditions such as high temperature will undoubtedly improve encryption security, while it is still challenging for present TFMs. In this work, high-temperature thermochromic fluorescence up to 473 K and robust structural and optical reversibility of 80 cycles are observed in Rb2 MnBr4 (H2 O)2 and related crystals, which is seldom reported for PL changes at such a high temperature. Temperature-driven nonluminous, red and green light emission states can be achieved at specific temperatures and the modulation mechanism is verified by in situ optical and structural measurements and single particle transition. By virtue of this unique feature, a multicolor anti-counterfeiting label based on a broad temperature gradient and multidimensional information encryption applications are demonstrated. This work opens a window for the design of inorganic materials with multi-PL change and the development of advanced encryption strategies with extreme stimuli source.

Chemical Storage of Ammonia through Dynamic Structural Transformation of a Hybrid Perovskite Compound

Toward renewable energy for global leveling, compounds that can store ammonia (NH3), a carbon-free energy carrier of hydrogen, will be of great value. Here, we report an organic-inorganic halide perovskite compound that can chemically store NH3 through dynamic structural transformation. Upon NH3 uptake, a chemical structure change occurs from a one-dimensional columnar structure to a two-dimensional layered structure by addition reaction. NH3 uptake is estimated to be 10.2 mmol g-1 at 1 bar and 25 °C. In addition, NH3 extraction can be performed by a condensation reaction at 50 °C under vacuum. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that reversible NH3 uptake/extraction originates from a cation/anion exchange reaction. This structural transformation shows the potential to integrate efficient uptake and extraction in a hybrid perovskite compound through chemical reaction. These findings will pave the way for further exploration of dynamic, reversible, and functionally useful compounds for chemical storage of NH3.

Hydrochromic Perovskite System with Reversible Blue-Green Color for Advanced Anti-Counterfeiting

The intrinsic instability of halide perovskites toward to external stimulus, has created a competitive advantage for designing stimuli-responsive materials. However, the external environment tuning reversibly fluorescence emission of perovskite system is still limited. In this work, humidity is verified to act as a new option to modulate the emission properties of mixed-halide perovskite. The perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) photoirradiated in dichloromethane are easily and stably redispersed in water, and emit bright fluorescence which is quite different from the original. Moreover, the perovskites confined on glass slide can reversibly switch their fluorescence between blue and green colors under moisture. It is demonstrated that the factors of different solubilities of CsCl and CsBr in water, the structural transformation of perovskites and the confine of glass matrix play key roles in the reversible transformation. Finally, the combination of hydrochromic CsPb(Brx Cly )3 and water-resistant CsPb(Brx Cly )3 -polymethyl methacrylate have been applied in advanced anti-counterfeiting, which greatly improves the information security. This work not only give an insight into the effects of humidity on fluorescence and structures of PNCs, but also offer a new class of hydrochromic PNCs materials based on reversible emission transformation for potential application in sensors, anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Metal-Ion-Doped Manganese Halide Hybrids with Tunable Emission for Advanced Anti-Counterfeiting

Stimuli-responsive luminescent materials have received great attention for their potential application in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption. Manganese halide hybrids have been considered an efficient stimuli-responsive luminescent material due to their low price and adjustable photoluminescence (PL). However, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of PEA₂MnBr₄ is relatively low. Herein, Zn²⁺- and Pb²⁺-doped PEA₂MnBr₄ samples are synthesized, and show an intense green emission and orange emission, respectively. After doping with Zn²⁺, the PLQY of PEA₂MnBr₄ is elevated from 9% to 40%. We have found that green emitting Zn²⁺-doped PEA₂MnBr₄ could transform to a pink color after being exposed to air for several seconds and the reversible transformation from pink to green was achieved by using heating treatment. Benefiting from this property, an anti-counterfeiting label is fabricated, which exhibits excellent "pink-green-pink" cycle capability. Pb²⁺-doped PEA₂Mn_0.88Zn_0.12Br₄ is acquired by cation exchange reaction, which shows intense orange emission with a high QY of 85%. The PL of Pb²⁺-doped PEA₂Mn_0.88Zn_0.12Br₄ decreases with increasing temperature. Hence, the encrypted multilayer composite film is fabricated relying on the different thermal responses of Zn²⁺- and Pb²⁺-doped PEA₂MnBr₄, whereby the encrypted information can be read out by thermal treatment.

Moisture-Tailored 2D Dion-Jacobson Perovskites for Reconfigurable Optoelectronics

Humidity- and moisture-induced degradation has been a longstanding problem in perovskite materials, affecting their long-term stability during applications. Counterintuitively, the moisture is leveraged to tailor the reversible hydrochromic behaviors of a new series of 2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskites for reconfigurable optoelectronics. In particular, the hydrogen bonds between organic cations and water molecules can be dynamically modulated via moisture removal/exposure. Remarkably, such modulation confines the movement of the organic cations close to the original position, preventing their escape from crystal lattices. Furthermore, this mechanism is elucidated by theoretical analysis using first-principles calculations and confirmed with the experimental characterizations. The reversible fluorescent transition 2D DJ perovskites show excellent cyclical properties, presenting untapped opportunities for reconfigurable optoelectronic applications. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, an anti-counterfeiting display is shown based on patterned reversible 2D DJ perovskites. The results represent a new avenue of reconfigurable optoelectronic application with 2D DJ perovskites for humidity detection, anti-counterfeiting, sensing, and other emerging photoelectric intelligent technologies.

Bio-Inspired Electro-Thermal-Hygro Responsive Rewritable Systems with Temporal/Spatial Control for Environment-Interactive Information Display

Utilization of rewritable luminescent materials for secure information storage and delivery has long been envisaged to reduce the cost and environmental wastes. However, it remains challenging to realize a temporally/spatially controlled display of the written information, which is crucial for secure information encryption. Here, inspired by bioelectricity-triggered skin pattern switching in cephalopods, an ideal rewritable system consisting of conductive graphene film and carbon dots (CDs) gel with blue-to-red fluorescence-color changes via water-triggered CDs aggregation and re-dispersion is presented. Its rewritability is guaranteed by using water ink to write on the CDs-gel and employing Joule heat of graphene film to evaporate water. Due to the highly controlled electrical stimulus, temporally/spatially controlled display is achieved, enabling on-demand delivery and duration time regulation of the written information. Furthermore, new-concept environment-interactive rewritable system is obtained by integrating sensitive acoustic/optical sensors and multichannel electronic time-delay devices. This work opens unprecedented avenues of rewritable systems and expands potential uses for information encryption/delivery.

Water-stable, biocompatible, and highly luminescent perovskite nanocrystals-embedded fiber-based paper for anti-counterfeiting applications

In this study, we present a promising and facile approach toward the fabrication of non-toxic, water-stable, and eco-friendly luminescent fiber paper composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) polymer and CsPbBr₃@SiO₂ core-shell perovskite nanocrystals. PCL-perovskite fiber paper was fabricated using a conventional electrospinning process. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) clearly revealed incorporation of CsPbBr₃@SiO₂ nanocrystals in the fibers, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that incorporation of CsPbBr₃@SiO₂ nanocrystals did not affect the surface and diameter of the PCL-perovskite fibers. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and contact angle measurements have demonstrated that the PCL-perovskite fibers exhibit excellent thermal and water stability. The fabricated PCL-perovskite fiber paper exhibited a bright green emission centered at 520 nm upon excitation by ultra-violet (UV) light (374 nm). We have demonstrated that fluorescent PCL-perovskite fiber paper is a promising candidate for anti-counterfeiting applications because various patterns can be printed on the paper, which only become visible after exposure to UV light at 365 nm. Cell proliferation tests revealed that the PCL-perovskite fibers are cytocompatibility. Consequently, they may be suitable for biocompatible anti-counterfeiting. The present study reveals that PCL-perovskite fibers may pave way toward next generation biomedical probe and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Zero-Dimensional Antimony Halides: Structural Distortion Controlled Luminescence Thermometer

Materials emitting circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have been intensively studied for their promising applications in various fields. However, developing tunable and responsive CPL materials in a wide wavelength range remains a great challenge. Here, a pair of chiral (R,R/S,S-DCDA)₃Sb₂Cl₁₂ (DCDA = dimethyl-1,2-cyclohexanediamine divalent cation) shows efficient broadband yellow emission with a photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 27.6% with a CPL asymmetry factor of 3 × 10^-3. The associated chiroptical activity is attributed to the efficient chiral transfer as well as the self-trapped exciton emission originating from the large distortion of the inorganic blocks. Notably, (R,R/S,S-DCDA)₃Sb₂Cl₁₂ exhibits a large red-shift emission exceeding 100 nm upon lowering temperature. An excellent linear correlation of the PL wavelength on temperature indicates that the compounds can be used as PL thermometers, which originates from a temperature-dependent linear structural distortion of the [SbCl₆] emitter. This work inspires the potential utilization of CPL-emitting materials as responsive light sources.

Reversible Luminescent Switching Induced by Heat/Water Treatment in a Zero-Dimensional Hybrid Antimony(Ⅲ) Chloride

Recently zero-dimensional (0-D) inorganic-organic metal halides (IOMHs) have become a promising class of optoelectronic materials. Herein, we report a new photoluminescent (PL) 0-D antimony(III)-based IOMH single crystal, namely [H2BPZ][SbCl5]·H2O (BPZ = benzylpiperazine). Photophysical characterizations indicate that [H2BPZ][SbCl5]·H2O exhibits singlet/triplet dual-band emission. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that [H2BPZ][SbCl5]·H2O has the large energy difference between singlet and triplet states, which might induce the dual emission in this compound. Temperature-dependent PL spectra analyses suggest the soft lattice and strong electron-phonon coupling in this compound. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that the water molecules in the lattice of the title crystal could be removed by thermal treatment, giving rise to a dehydrated phase of [H2BPZ][SbCl5]. Interestingly, such structural transformation is accompanied by a reversible PL emission transition between red light (630 nm, dehydrated phase) and yellow light (595 nm, water-containing phase). When being exposed to an environment with 77% relative humidity, the emission color of the dehydrated phase was able to change from red to yellow within 20 s, and the red emission could be restored after reheating. The red to yellow emission switching could be achieved in acetone with water concentration as low as 0.2 vol%. The reversible PL transition phenomenon makes [H2BPZ][SbCl5]·H2O a potential material for luminescent water-sensing.

Effect of the Host Lattice Environment on the Expression of 5s2 Lone-Pair Electrons in a 0D Bismuth-Based Metal Halide

ns²-Metal halide perovskites have attracted wide attention due to their fascinating photophysical properties. However, achieving high photoluminescence (PL) properties is still an enormous challenge, and the relationship between the lattice environment and ns²-electron expression is still elusive. Herein, an organic-inorganic Bi³⁺-based halide (C₅H₁₄N₂)₂BiCl₆·Cl·2H₂O (C₅H₁₄N₂²⁺ = doubly protonated 1-methylpiperazine) with a six-coordinated structure has been successfully prepared, which, however, exhibits inferior PL properties due to the chemically inert expression of Bi³⁺-6s² lone-pair electrons. After reasonably embedding Sb³⁺ with 5s² electrons into the lattice of (C₅H₁₄N₂)₂BiCl₆·Cl·2H₂O, the host lattice environment induces the Sb-Cl moiety to change from the original five-coordinated to six-coordinated structure, thereby resulting in a broad-band yellow emission with a PL efficiency up to 50.75%. By utilizing the host lattice of (C₅H₁₄N₂)₂BiCl₆·Cl·2H₂O, the expression of Sb³⁺-5s² lone-pair electrons is improved and thus promotes the radiative recombination from the Sb³⁺-³P₁ state, resulting in the enhanced PL efficiency. This work will provide an in-depth insight into the effect of the local structure on the expression of Sb³⁺-5s² lone-pair electrons.

Thermal-Response Proton Conduction in Schiff Base-Incorporated Metal-Organic Framework Hybrid Membranes under Low Humidity Based on the Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer Mechanism

Stimulus-responsive proton conduction materials have attracted enormous interest as a new kind of "smart material". It is desirable to develop the appropriate stimulus signal and high proton-conducting materials with an excellent proton-conducting switch ratio (γ), but it remains a great challenge. Here, it can be found for the first time that 4-((2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)benzenesulfonic acid (HBABSA) has obvious thermal isomerization when porous solids act as matrixes at the ambient temperatures, which is different from that in the crystalline state at 77 K. Therefore, we proposed a host-guest metal-organic framework (MOF) composite, namely, MOF-808 incorporated with HBABSA (HBABSA@MOF-808), which has a proton-conducting switch ratio (γ) of 16 between 338 and 343 K due to the thermally induced isomerization of HBABSA molecules in the MOF pores. The strong binding between the keto-type HBABSA and MOF at the relatively low temperatures can efficiently suppress the proton conduction, while the enol-type one provides more mobile protons for conduction at the high temperatures due to the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer mechanism. Further, the HBABSA@MOF-808 as a filler is blended into polyvinyl alcohol and poly(2-acrylamide-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid) to form hybrid membranes. The hybrid membrane with the highest content of the MOF composite displays a high proton conductivity of 5.57 × 10-3 S·cm-1 under 353 K and 57% RH along with a good switch ratio of 5.4. The development of thermal-response proton-conducting MOF materials is opening up a unique pathway for remote control, thermal sensing, intelligent batteries, and other fields.

Multiple Light Source-Excited Organic Manganese Halides for Water-Jet Rewritable Luminescent Paper and Anti-Counterfeiting

Rewritable luminescent paper is particularly crucial, considering the ultrahigh paper consumption and confidential information security, but a highly desirable stimuli-responsive smart luminescent material with excellent water solubility has rarely been studied. Herein, a new type of rewritable paper made by highly efficient green light emissive zero-dimensional (0D) organic manganese halides is rationally designed by virtue of the reversible photoluminescence (PL) off-on switching. Specifically, the green emission can be linearly quenched by water vapor in a wide humidity range and again recovered in a dry atmosphere, which make it a smart hydrochromic PL off-on switching and humidity sensor. Benefiting from the reversible luminescence off-on switch and excellent water solubility, rewritable luminescent paper is realized through water-jet security printing technology on 0D halide-coated commercial paper with high resolution. The printed/written information can be easily cleaned by slight heating with outstanding "write-erase-write" cycle capabilities. In addition, multiple light source-induced coincident green light emissions further provide convenience to realize anti-counterfeiting, encryption and decryption of confidential information, and so forth. This work highlights the superiority of dynamic ionic-bonded 0D organic manganese halides as reversible PL switching materials in rewritable luminescent paper, high-security-level information printing, storage and protection technologies, and so forth.

Emission Mechanism of Self-Trapped Excitons in Sb3+-Doped All-Inorganic Metal-Halide Perovskites

Sb³⁺ doping confers highly efficient and color-diverse broadband light emission to all-inorganic metal-halide perovskites. However, the emission mechanism is still under debate. Herein, a trace amount of Sb³⁺ ions (<0.1% atomic percentage) doping in the typical all-inorganic perovskites Cs₂NaInCl₆, Rb₃InCl₆, and Cs₂InCl₅·H₂O allows universal observation of the fine structure in the photoluminescence excitation spectrum of the ns² electron. A lifetime mapping method was utilized to reveal the origin of broadband emission triggered by Sb³⁺ doping, by which various fluorescence components can be differentiated. In particular, free-exciton emission was identified at the high-energy end of the broadband emission for all three doped systems. The excitation-energy- and temperature-dependent fluorescence decay further indicates the existence and origin of self-trapped states. The observed structural and vibrational symmetry-dependent emission behaviors suggest dipole interactions can dramatically alter Stokes-shift energy and modulate the light-emitting wavelength.

Zero-Dimensional Zn-Based Halides with Ultra-Long Room-Temperature Phosphorescence for Time-Resolved Anti-Counterfeiting

Though fluorescence-tag-based anti-counterfeiting technology has distinguished itself with cost-effective features and huge information loading capacity, the clonable decryption process of spatial-resolved anti-counterfeiting cannot meet the requirements for high-security-level anti-counterfeiting. Herein, we demonstrate a spatial-time-dual-resolved anti-counterfeiting system based on new organic-inorganic hybrid halides BAPPZn₂ (Cl_y Br_1-y )₈ (BAPP=1,4-bis(3-ammoniopropyl)piperazinium, y=0-1) with ultra-long room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). Remarkably, the afterglow lifetime can be facilely tuned by regulating the halide-induced heavy-atom effect and can be identified by the naked eyes or with the help of a simple machine vision system. Therefore, the short-lived unicolor fluorescence and lasting-time-tunable RTP provide the prerequisites for unicolor-time-resolved anti-counterfeiting, which lowers the decryption-device requirements and further provides the design strategy of advanced portable anti-counterfeiting technology.

Highly Distorted Antimony(III) Chloride [Sb2 Cl8 ]2- Dimers for Near-Infrared Luminescence up to 1070 nm

Zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid metal halides with unique compositional and structural tunability appear as an emerging class of luminescent materials, but near-infrared (NIR) emitters therein are largely unexplored to date. This study presents three novel 0D hybrid antimony chlorines with edge-sharing [Sb₂ Cl₈ ]^2- dimers, showing unusual room-temperature broadband NIR emission with the maximum emission wavelength up to 1070 nm. Photoluminescence studies and density functional theory calculation demonstrate that the emissions originate from the highly localized excitons, and that the confined [Sb₂ Cl₈ ]^2- dimers in these structures show low symmetry and a large degree of structural freedom. These hybrid antimony chlorines with [Sb₂ Cl₈ ]^2- dimers expand the range of new NIR materials in 0D metal halides.

Luminescent Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Metal Halides: An Emerging Class of Stimuli-Responsive Materials

Luminescent organic-inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) are well known as a new materials family in recent years. Novel materials and applications of luminescent OIMHs have been explored by changing either the organic component or the metal halide species. Thereinto, the stimuli-responsive (SR) phenomena in OIMHs have drawn much attention recently, for not only their attractive application potential but also the helpfulness in understanding the stability of OIMHs to the external environment. Herein, the luminescent OIMHs that are sensitive to external stimuli including contact, pressure, mechanical grinding, light, heat, and gas molecules, are reviewed, with an emphasis on analyses of the structural change during the SR process. The applications of SR luminescent OIMHs in widespread fields, including gas sensing, information encryption, and rewritable luminescent paper are summarized. Finally, the challenges that deserve to be further explored in this research field are discussed, which provides certain guidance for the future study of SR luminescent OIMHs.

Zero-dimensional hybrid binuclear manganese chloride with thermally stable yellow emission

Photoluminescence (PL) thermal quenching of hybrid metal halides blocks their applications. Herein, a novel type of 0D hybrid metal halide, [Pb(C₁₂H₂₄O₆)Cl]₂[Mn₂Cl₆], with broad yellow emission and near-unity PL quantum yield is reported. Importantly, it preserves outstanding thermal stability up to 450 K.

Solely 3-Coordinated Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Copper(I) Halide: Hexagonal Channel Structure, Turn-On Response to Mechanical Force, Moisture, and Amine

Herein, we report a novel organic-inorganic hybrid Cu^I halide PyCs₃Cu₂Br₆ (Py: pyridinium), where pyridinium and cesium ions coexist. We successfully develop a novel strategy for fabricating turn-on responsive materials. PyCs₃Cu₂Br₆ has a higher single-crystal symmetry (no. 191) than its all-inorganic counterpart Cs₃Cu₂Br₅ (no. 62), and the incorporation of organic pyridinium varied the coordination environment of Cu^I. PyCs₃Cu₂Br₆ formed a triangle planar structure with solely 3-coordinated Cu^I ions, which quenched its luminescence. However, PyCs₃Cu₂Br₆ presented a hexagonal channel structure, which enabled it with turn-on response upon mechanical force, heat, moisture, and amine vapor. Such structure offered channels for active molecules to diffuse and interact with pyridiniums, leading to the stimuli-triggered phase change to highly emissive Cs₃Cu₂Br₅. To our best knowledge, for the first time, we discover a novel 3-coordinated organic-inorganic hybrid Cu^I halide with turn-on response to external stimuli. We believe that our study will contribute to expanding the landscape of smart stimulus-responsive materials and lay the foundation for their wide applications.

Integrated Afterglow and Self-Trapped Exciton Emissions in Hybrid Metal Halides for Anti-Counterfeiting Applications

0D hybrid metal halides (0D HMHs) are considered to be promising luminescent emitters. 0D HMHs commonly exhibit self-trapped exciton (STE) emissions originating from the inorganic metal halide anion units. Exploring and utilizing the emission features of the organic cation units in 0D HMHs is highly desired to enrich their optical properties as multifunctional luminescent materials. Here, tunable emissions from organic and inorganic units are successfully achieved in triphenylsulfonium (Ph₃ S⁺ )-based 0D HMHs. Notably, integrated afterglow and STE emissions with adjustable intensities are obtained in (Ph₃ S)₂ Sn_{1- x} Te_x Cl₆ (x = 0-1) via the delicate combination of [SnCl₆ ]^2- and [TeCl₆ ]^2- . Moreover, such a strategy can be readily extended to develop other HMH materials with intriguing optical properties. As a demonstration, 0D (Ph₃ S)₂ Zn_{1- x} Mn_x Cl₄ (x = 0-1) are constructed to achieve integrated afterglow and Mn²⁺ d-d emissions with high efficiency. Consequently, these novel 0D HMHs with colorful afterglow and STE emissions are applied in multiple anti-counterfeiting applications.

Application of "smart" multifunctional nanoprobes in tumor diagnosis and treatment

Cancer is one of the major diseases that pose a threat to human health and life, especially because it is difficult to diagnose and cure, and recurs easily. In recent years, the development of nanotechnology has provided researchers with new tools for cancer treatment. In particular, nanoprobes that facilitate integrated diagnosis and treatment, high-resolution imaging, and accurate tumor targeting provide new avenues for the early detection and treatment of cancer. This review focuses on the preparations and applications of two kinds of "smart" multifunctional nanoprobes: "Off-On" nanoprobes and "Charge-Reversal" nanoprobes. This review also briefly discusses their mechanisms of action, as they could provide new ideas for the further development of this field.

Nearly one-fold enhancement in photoluminescence quantum yield for isostructural zero-dimensional hybrid antimony(III) bromides by supramolecular interaction adjustments

Zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) hold promise in photoluminescence properties and related applications. Thus far, the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of the reported 0D hybrid antimony(III) bromides (HABs) are not as high as those of the chloride analogs; therefore, the improvement of PLQY is an important issue for luminescent HABs. Herein, a supramolecular interaction adjustment strategy to improve the PLQYs of HABs is proposed. Two isostructural 0D HABs that crystallize with different lattice solvent molecules, namely [EtPPh₃]₂[SbBr₅]·EtOH (1·EtOH-Br; EtPPh₃ = ethyltriphenylphosphonium; EtOH = ethanol) and [EtPPh₃]₂[SbBr₅]·MeCN (1·MeCN-Br; MeCN = acetonitrile), have been synthesized. Both of them exhibit typical self-trapped exciton (STE) photoluminescence (PL) with broad emission, a large Stokes shift and a long lifetime. They show deviation in deep-red emission peaks (655 nm vs. 661 nm) owing to the difference in the distortion level of [SbBr₅]^2- anions. Most importantly, 1·EtOH-Br exhibits a nearly one-fold enhancement in PLQY compared to 1·MeCN-Br (18.26% vs. 9.29%). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, hydrogen bonding analysis and Hirshfeld surface analysis suggest that the PLQY enhancement is due to the structural rigidity improvement brought by hydrogen bonding adjustments between the inorganic [SbBr₅]^2- anions and solvent molecules. This work provides a new insight into the structure-property relationship study and PLQY improvement for 0D OIMHs.
