[Am(C5 Me4 H)3 ]: An Organometallic Americium Complex

N-Heterocyclic Carbene to Actinide d-Based π-bonding Correlates with Observed Metal-Carbene Bond Length Shortening Versus Lanthanide Congeners

Comparison of bonding and electronic structural features between trivalent lanthanide (Ln) and actinide (An) complexes across homologous series' of molecules can provide insights into subtle and overt periodic trends. Of keen interest and debate is the extent to which the valence f- and d-orbitals of trivalent Ln/An ions engage in covalent interactions with different ligand donor functionalities and, crucially, how bonding differences change as both the Ln and An series are traversed. Synthesis and characterization (SC-XRD, NMR, UV-vis-NIR, and computational modeling) of the homologous lanthanide and actinide N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes [M(C5Me5)2(X)(IMe4)] {X = I, M = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, U, Np, Pu; X = Cl, M = Nd; X = I/Cl, M = Nd, Am; and IMe4 = [C(NMeCMe)2]} reveals consistently shorter An-C vs Ln-C distances that do not substantially converge upon reaching Am3+/Nd3+ comparison. Specifically, the difference of 0.064(6) Å observed in the La/U pair is comparable to the 0.062(4) Å difference observed in the Nd/Am pair. Computational analyses suggest that the cause of this unusual observation is rooted in the presence of π-bonding with the valence d-orbital manifold in actinide complexes that is not present in the lanthanide congeners. This is in contrast to other documented cases of shorter An-ligand vs Ln-ligand distances, which are often attributed to increased 5f vs 4f radial diffusivity leading to differences in 4f and 5f orbital bonding involvement. Moreover, in these traditional observations, as the 5f series is traversed, the 5f manifold contracts such that by americium structural studies often find no statistically significant Am3+vs Nd3+ metal-ligand bond length differences.

Realization of Organocerium-Based Fullerene Molecular Materials Showing Mott Insulator-Type Behavior

Electron-rich organocerium complexes (C5Me4H)3Ce and [(C5Me5)2Ce(ortho-oxa)], with redox potentials E1/2 = -0.82 V and E1/2 = -0.86 V versus Fc/Fc+, respectively, were reacted with fullerene (C60) in different stoichiometries to obtain molecular materials. Structurally characterized cocrystals: [(C5Me4H)3Ce]2·C60 (1) and [(C5Me5)2Ce(ortho-oxa)]3·C60 (2) of C60 with cerium-based, molecular rare earth precursors are reported for the first time. The extent of charge transfer in 1 and 2 was evaluated using a series of physical measurements: FT-IR, Raman, solid-state UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The physical measurements indicate that 1 and 2 comprise the cerium(III) oxidation state, with formally neutral C60 as a cocrystal in both cases. Pressure-dependent periodic density functional theory calculations were performed to study the electronic structure of 1. Inclusion of a Hubbard-U parameter removes Ce f states from the Fermi level, opens up a band gap, and stabilizes FM/AFM magnetic solutions that are isoenergetic because of the large distances between the Ce(III) cations. The electronic structure of this strongly correlated Mott insulator-type system is reminiscent of the well-studied Ce2O3.

Expanding the Transuranic Metal-Organic Framework Portfolio: The Optical Properties of Americium(III) MOF-76

Reported is the synthesis, crystal structure, and solid-state characterization of a new americium containing metal-organic framework (MOF), [Am(C9H3O6)(H2O)], MOF-76(Am). This material is constructed from Am3+ metal centers and 1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (BTC) ligands, forming a porous three-dimensional framework that is isostructural with several known trivalent lanthanide (Ln) analogs (e.g., Ce, Nd, and Sm-Lu). The Am3+ ions have seven coordinates and assume a distorted, capped trigonal prismatic geometry with C1 symmetry. The Am3+-O bonds were studied via infrared spectroscopy and compared to several MOF-76(Ln) analogs, where Ln = Nd3+, Eu3+, Tb3+, and Ho3+. The results show that the strength of the ligand carboxylate stretching and bending modes increase with Nd3+ < Eu3+ < Am3+ < Tb3+ < Ho3+, suggesting the metal-oxygen bonds are predominantly ionic. Optical absorbance spectroscopy measurements reveal strong f-f transitions; some exhibit pronounced crystal field splitting. The photoluminescence spectrum contains weak Am3+-based emission that is achieved through direct and indirect metal center excitation. The weak emissive behavior is somewhat surprising given that ligand-to-metal resonance energy transfer is efficient in the isoelectronic Eu3+ (4f6) and related Tb3+ (4f8) analogs. The optical properties were explored further within a series of heterometallic MOF-76(Tb1-xAmx) (x = 0.8, 0.2, and 0.1) samples, and the results reveal enhanced Am3+ photoluminescence.

Insight into the Structural and Emissive Behavior of a Three-Dimensional Americium(III) Formate Coordination Polymer

We report the structural, vibrational, and optical properties of americium formate (Am(CHO2 )3 ) crystals synthesized via the in situ hydrolysis of dimethylformamide (DMF). The coordination polymer features Am3+ ions linked by formate ligands into a three-dimensional network that is isomorphous to several lanthanide analogs, (e. g., Eu3+ , Nd3+ , Tb3+ ). Structure determination revealed a nine-coordinate Am3+ metal center that features a unique local C3v symmetry. The metal-ligand bonding interactions were investigated by vibrational spectroscopy, natural localized molecular orbital calculations, and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules. The results paint a predominantly ionic bond picture and suggest the metal-oxygen bonds increase in strength from Nd-O Collapse

Ligand Control of Oxidation and Crystallographic Disorder in the Isolation of Hexavalent Uranium Mono-Oxo Complexes

The development of high-valent transuranic chemistry requires robust methodologies to access and fully characterize reactive species. We have recently demonstrated that the reducing nature of imidophosphorane ligands supports the two-electron oxidation of U⁴⁺ to U⁶⁺ and established the use of this ligand to evaluate the inverse-trans-influence (ITI) in actinide metal-ligand multiple bond (MLMB) complexes. To extend this methodology and analysis to transuranic complexes, new small-scale synthetic strategies and lower-symmetry ligand derivatives are necessary to improve crystallinity and reduce crystallographic disorder. To this end, the synthesis of two new imidophosphorane ligands, [N═P^tBu(pip)₂]^- (NPC¹) and [N═P^tBu(pyrr)₂]^- (NPC²) (pip = piperidinyl; pyrr = pyrrolidinyl), is presented, which break pseudo-C₃ axes in the tetravalent complexes, U[NPC¹]₄ and U[NPC²]₄. The reaction of these complexes with two-electron oxygen-atom-transfer reagents (N₂O, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) and 2,3:5,6-dibenzo-7-azabicyclo[2.2.1]hepta-2,5-diene (dbabhNO)) yields the U⁶⁺ mono-oxo complexes U(O)[NPC¹]₄ and U(O)[NPC²]₄. This methodology is optimized for direct translation to transuranic elements. Of the two ligands, the NPC² framework is most suitable for facilitating detailed bonding analysis and assessment of the ITI. Theoretical evaluation of the U-(NPC) bonding confirms a substantial difference between axially and equatorially bonded N atoms, revealing markedly more covalent U-N_ax interactions. The U 6d + 5f combined contribution for U-N_ax is nearly double that of U-N_eq, accounting for ITI shortening and increased bond order of the axial bond. Two distinct N-atom hybridizations in the pyrrolidine/piperidine rings are noted across the complexes, with approximate sp² and sp³ configurations describing the slightly shorter P-N_"planar" and slightly longer P-N_"pyramidal" bonds, respectively. In all complexes, the NPC² ligands feature more planar N atoms than NPC¹, in accordance with a higher electron-donating capacity of the former.

Contrasting Trivalent Lanthanide and Actinide Complexation by Polyoxometalates via Solution-State NMR

Deciphering the solution chemistry and speciation of actinides is inherently difficult due to radioactivity, rarity, and cost constraints, especially for transplutonium elements. In this context, the development of new chelating platforms for actinides and associated spectroscopic techniques is particularly important. In this study, we investigate a relatively overlooked class of chelators for actinide binding, namely, polyoxometalates (POMs). We provide the first NMR measurements on americium-POM and curium-POM complexes, using one-dimensional (1D) ³¹P NMR, variable-temperature NMR, and spin-lattice relaxation time (T₁) experiments. The proposed POM-NMR approach allows for the study of trivalent f-elements even when only microgram amounts are available and in phosphate-containing solutions where f-elements are typically insoluble. The solution-state speciation of trivalent americium, curium, plus multiple lanthanide ions (La³⁺, Nd³⁺, Sm³⁺, Eu³⁺, Yb³⁺, and Lu³⁺), in the presence of the model POM ligand PW₁₁O₃₉^7- was elucidated and revealed the concurrent formation of two stable complexes, [M^III(PW₁₁O₃₉)(H₂O)_x]^4- and [M^III(PW₁₁O₃₉)₂]^11-. Interconversion reaction constants, reaction enthalpies, and reaction entropies were derived from the NMR data. The NMR results also provide experimental evidence of the weakly paramagnetic nature of the Am³⁺ and Cm³⁺ ions in solution. Furthermore, the study reveals a previously unnoticed periodicity break along the f-element series with the reversal of T₁ relaxation times of the 1:1 and 1:2 complexes and the preferential formation of the long T₁ species for the early lanthanides versus the short T₁ species for the late lanthanides, americium, and curium. Given the broad variety of POM ligands that exist, with many of them containing NMR-active nuclei, the combined POM-NMR approach reported here opens a new avenue to investigate difficult-to-study elements such as heavy actinides and other radionuclides.

Rare Earth Starting Materials and Methodologies for Synthetic Chemistry

The number of rare earth (RE) starting materials used in synthesis is staggering, ranging from simple binary metal-halide salts to borohydrides and "designer reagents" such as alkyl and organoaluminate complexes. This review collates the most important starting materials used in RE synthetic chemistry, including essential information on their preparations and uses in modern synthetic methodologies. The review is divided by starting material category and supporting ligands (i.e., metals as synthetic precursors, halides, borohydrides, nitrogen donors, oxygen donors, triflates, and organometallic reagents), and in each section relevant synthetic methodologies and applications are discussed.

Cyclopentadienyl coordination induces unexpected ionic Am-N bonding in an americium bipyridyl complex

Variations in bonding between trivalent lanthanides and actinides is critical for reprocessing spent nuclear fuel. The ability to tune bonding and the coordination environment in these trivalent systems is a key factor in identifying a solution for separating lanthanides and actinides. Coordination of 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy) and trimethylsilylcyclopentadienide (Cp') to americium introduces unexpectedly ionic Am-N bonding character and unique spectroscopic properties. Here we report the structural characterization of (Cp'₃Am)₂(μ - 4,4'-bpy) and its lanthanide analogue, (Cp'₃Nd)₂(μ - 4,4'-bpy), by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Spectroscopic techniques in both solid and solution phase are performed in conjunction with theoretical calculations to probe the effects the unique coordination environment has on the electronic structure.

[AnI3(THF)4] (An = Np, Pu) Preparation Bypassing An0 Metal Precursors: Access to Np3+/Pu3+ Nonaqueous and Organometallic Complexes

Direct comparison of homologous molecules provides a foundation from which to elucidate both subtle and patent changes in reactivity patterns, redox processes, and bonding properties across a series of elements. While trivalent molecular U chemistry is richly developed, analogous Np or Pu research has long been hindered by synthetic routes often requiring scarcely available metallic-phase source material, high-temperature solid-state reactions producing poorly soluble binary halides, or the use of pyrophoric reagents. The development of routes to nonaqueous Np³⁺/Pu³⁺ from widely available precursors can potentially transform the scope and pace of research into actinide periodicity. Here, aqueous stocks of An⁴⁺ (An = Np, Pu) are dehydrated to well-defined [AnCl₄(DME)₂] (DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane), and then a single-step halide exchange/reduction employing Me₃SiI produces [AnI₃(THF)₄] (THF = tetrahydrofuran) in a high to nearly quantitative crystalline yield (with I₂ and Me₃SiCl as easily removed byproducts). We demonstrate the synthetic utility of these An-iodide molecules, prepared by metal⁰-free routes, through characterization of archetypal complexes including the tris-silylamide, [Np{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃], and bent metallocenes, [An(C₅Me₅)₂(I)(THF)] (An = Np, Pu)─chosen because both motifs are ubiquitous in Th, U, and lanthanide research. The synthesis of [Np{N(Se═PPh₂)₂}₃] is also reported, completing an isomorphous series that now extends from U to Am and is the first characterized Np³⁺-Se bond.

Isolation and characterization of a californium metallocene

Californium (Cf) is currently the heaviest element accessible above microgram quantities. Cf isotopes impose severe experimental challenges due to their scarcity and radiological hazards. Consequently, chemical secrets ranging from the accessibility of 5f/6d valence orbitals to engage in bonding, the role of spin-orbit coupling in electronic structure, and reactivity patterns compared to other f elements, remain locked. Organometallic molecules were foundational in elucidating periodicity and bonding trends across the periodic table^1-3, with a twenty-first-century renaissance of organometallic thorium (Th) through plutonium (Pu) chemistry^4-12, and to a smaller extent americium (Am)¹³, transforming chemical understanding. Yet, analogous curium (Cm) to Cf chemistry has lain dormant since the 1970s. Here, we revive air-/moisture-sensitive Cf chemistry through the synthesis and characterization of [Cf(C₅Me₄H)₂Cl₂K(OEt₂)]_n from two milligrams of ²⁴⁹Cf. This bent metallocene motif, not previously structurally authenticated beyond uranium (U)^14,15, contains the first crystallographically characterized Cf-C bond. Analysis suggests the Cf-C bond is largely ionic with a small covalent contribution. Lowered Cf 5f orbital energy versus dysprosium (Dy) 4f in the colourless, isoelectronic and isostructural [Dy(C₅Me₄H)₂Cl₂K(OEt₂)]_n results in an orange Cf compound, contrasting with the light-green colour typically associated with Cf compounds^16-22.

Complexation and redox chemistry of neptunium, plutonium and americium with a hydroxylaminato ligand

There is significant interest in ligands that can stabilize actinide ions in oxidation states that can be exploited to chemically differentiate 5f and 4f elements. Applications range from developing large-scale actinide separation strategies for nuclear industry processing to carrying out analytical studies that support environmental monitoring and remediation efforts. Here, we report syntheses and characterization of Np(iv), Pu(iv) and Am(iii) complexes with N-tert-butyl-N-(pyridin-2-yl)hydroxylaminato, [2-(^tBuNO)py]⁻(interchangeable hereafter with [(^tBuNO)py]⁻), a ligand which was previously found to impart remarkable stability to cerium in the +4 oxidation state. An[(^tBuNO)py]₄ (An = Pu, 1; Np, 2) have been synthesized, characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption, ¹H NMR and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopies, and cyclic voltammetry, along with computational modeling and analysis. In the case of Pu, oxidation of Pu(iii) to Pu(iv) was observed upon complexation with the [(^tBuNO)py]⁻ ligand. The Pu complex 1 and Np complex 2 were also isolated directly from Pu(iv) and Np(iv) precursors. Electrochemical measurements indicate that a Pu(iii) species can be accessed upon one-electron reduction of 1 with a large negative reduction potential (E_1/2 = −2.26 V vs. Fc^+/0). Applying oxidation potentials to 1 and 2 resulted in ligand-centered electron transfer reactions, which is different from the previously reported redox chemistry of U^IV[(^tBuNO)py]₄ that revealed a stable U(v) product. Treatment of an anhydrous Am(iii) precursor with the [(^tBuNO)py]⁻ ligand did not result in oxidation to Am(iv). Instead, the dimeric complex [Am^III(μ₂-(^tBuNO)py)((^tBuNO)py)₂]₂ (3) was isolated. Complex 3 is a rare example of a structurally characterized non-aqueous Am-containing molecular complex prepared using inert atmosphere techniques. Predicted redox potentials from density functional theory calculations show a trivalent accessibility trend of U(iii) < Np(iii) < Pu(iii) and that the higher oxidation states of actinides (i.e., +5 for Np and Pu and +4 for Am) are not stabilized by [2-(^tBuNO)py]⁻, in good agreement with experimental observations.

The coordination modes and electronic properties of a strongly coordinating hydroxylaminato ligand with Np, Pu and Am were investigated.Complexes were characterized by a range of experimental and computational techniques.

Structural and Spectroscopic Comparison of Soft-Se vs. Hard-O Donor Bonding in Trivalent Americium/Neodymium Molecules

Covalency is often considered to be an influential factor in driving An³⁺ vs. Ln³⁺ selectivity invoked by soft donor ligands. This is intensely debated, particularly the extent to which An³⁺ /Ln³⁺ covalency differences prevail and manifest as the f-block is traversed, and the effects of periodic breaks beyond Pu. Herein, two Am complexes, [Am{N(E=PPh₂ )₂ }₃ ] (1-Am, E=Se; 2-Am, E=O) are compared to isoradial [Nd{N(E=PPh₂ )₂ }₃ ] (1-Nd, 2-Nd) complexes. Covalent contributions are assessed and compared to U/La and Pu/Ce analogues. Through ab initio calculations grounded in UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray structures, we observe differences in f orbital involvement between Am-Se and Nd-Se bonds, which are not present in O-donor congeners.

f-Block Phospholyl and Arsolyl Chemistry

The f-block chemistry of phospholyl and arsolyl ligands, heavier p-block analogues of substituted cyclopentadienyls (CpR , C5 R5 ) where one or more CR groups are replaced by P or As atoms, is less developed than for lighter isoelectronic C5 R5 rings. Heterocyclopentadienyl complexes can exhibit properties that complement and contrast with CpR chemistry. Given that there has been renewed interest in phospholyl and arsolyl f-block chemistry in the last two decades, coinciding with a renaissance in f-block solution chemistry, a review of this field is timely. Here, the syntheses of all structurally characterised examples of lanthanide and actinide phospholyl and arsolyl complexes to date are covered, including benzannulated derivatives, and together with group 3 complexes for completeness. The physicochemical properties of these complexes are reviewed, with the intention of motivating further research in this field.

A Single Small-Scale Plutonium Redox Reaction System Yields Three Crystallographically-Characterizable Organoplutonium Complexes

An approach to obtaining substantial amounts of data from a hazardous starting material that can only be obtained and handled in small quantities is demonstrated by the investigation of a single small-scale reaction of cyclooctatetraene, C₈H₈, with a solution obtained from the reduction of Cp'₃Pu (Cp' = C₅H₄SiMe₃) with potassium graphite. This one reaction coupled with oxidation of a product has provided single-crystal X-ray structural data on three organoplutonium compounds as well as information on redox chemistry thereby demonstrating an efficient route to new reactivity and structural information on this highly radioactive element. The crystal structures were obtained from the reduction of C₈H₈ by a putative Pu(II) complex, (Cp'₃Pu^II)^1-, generated in situ, to form the Pu(III) cyclooctatetraenide complex, [K(crypt)][(C₈H₈)₂Pu^III], 1-Pu, and the tetra(cyclopentadienyl) Pu(III) complex, [K(crypt)][Cp'₄Pu^III], 2-Pu. Oxidation of the sample of 1-Pu with Ag(I) afforded a third organoplutonium complex that has been structurally characterized for the first time, (C₈H₈)₂Pu^IV, 3-Pu. Complexes 1-Pu and 3-Pu contain Pu sandwiched between parallel (C₈H₈)^2- rings. The (Cp'₄Pu^III)^- anion in 2-Pu features three η⁵-Cp' rings and one η¹-Cp' ring, which is a rare example of a formal Pu-C η¹-bond. In addition, this study addresses the challenge of small-scale synthesis imparted by radiological and material availability of transuranium isotopes, in particular that of pure metal samples. A route to an anhydrous Pu(III) starting material from the more readily available Pu^IVO₂ was developed to facilitate reproducible syntheses and allow complete spectroscopic analysis of 1-Pu and 2-Pu. Pu^IVO₂ was converted to Pu^IIIBr₃(DME)₂ (DME = CH₃OCH₂CH₂OCH₃) and subsequently Pu^IIIBr₃(THF)_x, which was used to independently synthesize 1-Pu, 2-Pu, and 3-Pu.

Tris-{hydridotris(1-pyrazolyl)borato}actinide Complexes: Synthesis, Spectroscopy, Crystal Structure, Bonding Properties and Magnetic Behaviour

The isostructural compounds of the trivalent actinides uranium, neptunium, plutonium, americium, and curium with the hydridotris(1-pyrazolyl)borato (Tp) ligand An[η3 -HB(N2 C3 H3 )3 ]3 (AnTp3 ) have been obtained through several synthetic routes. Structural, spectroscopic (absorption, infrared, laser fluorescence) and magnetic characterisation of the compounds were performed in combination with crystal field, density functional theory (DFT) and relativistic multiconfigurational calculations. The covalent bonding interactions were analysed in terms of the natural bond orbital (NBO) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) models.

δ and φ back-donation in AnIV metallacycles

In all known examples of metal-ligand (M-L) δ and φ bonds, the metal orbitals are aligned to the ligand orbitals in a "head-to-head" or "side-to-head" fashion. Here, we report two fundamentally new types of M-L δ and φ interactions; "head-to-side" δ and "side-to-side" φ back-bonding, found in complexes of metallacyclopropenes and metallacyclocumulenes of actinides (Pa-Pu) that makes them distinct from their corresponding Group 4 analogues. In addition to the known Th and U complexes, our calculations include complexes of Pa, Np, and Pu. In contrast with conventional An-C bond decreasing, due to the actinide contraction, the An-C distance increases from Pa to Pu. We demonstrate that the direct L-An σ and π donations combined with the An-L δ or φ back-donations are crucial in explaining this non-classical trend of the An-L bond lengths in both series, underscoring the significance of these δ/φ back-donation interactions, and their importance for complexes of Pa and U in particular.

Probing a variation of the inverse-trans-influence in americium and lanthanide tribromide tris(tricyclohexylphosphine oxide) complexes

The synthesis, characterization, and theoretical analysis of meridional americium tribromide tris(tricyclohexylphosphine oxide), mer-AmBr3(OPcy3)3, has been achieved and is compared with its early lanthanide (La to Nd) analogs. The data show that homo trans ligands display significantly shorter bonds than the cis or hetero trans ligands. This is particularly pronounced in the americium compound. DFT along with multiconfigurational CASSCF calculations show that the contraction of the bonds relates qualitatively with overall covalency, i.e. americium shows the most covalent interactions compared to lanthanides. However, the involvement of the 5p and 6p shells in bonding follows a different order, namely cerium > neodymium ∼ americium. This study provides further insight into the mechanisms by which ITI operates in low-valent f-block complexes.

The importance of the counter-cation in reductive rare-earth metal chemistry: 18-crown-6 instead of 2,2,2-cryptand allows isolation of [YII(NR2)3]1- and ynediolate and enediolate complexes from CO reactions

The use of 18-crown-6 (18-c-6) in place of 2.2.2-cryptand (crypt) in rare earth amide reduction reactions involving potassium has proven to be crucial in the synthesis of Ln(ii) complexes and isolation of their CO reduction products. The faster speed of crystallization with 18-c-6 appears to be important. Previous studies have shown that reduction of the trivalent amide complexes Ln(NR2)3 (R = SiMe3) with potassium in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand (crypt) forms the divalent [K(crypt)][LnII(NR2)3] complexes for Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Tm. However, for Ho and Er, the [Ln(NR2)3]1- anions were only isolable with [Rb(crypt)]1+ counter-cations and isolation of the [YII(NR2)3]1- anion was not possible under any of these conditions. We now report that by changing the potassium chelator from crypt to 18-crown-6 (18-c-6), the [Ln(NR2)3]1- anions can be isolated not only for Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, and Tm, but also for Ho, Er, and Y. Specifically, these anions are isolated as salts of a 1 : 2 potassium : crown sandwich cation, [K(18-c-6)2]1+, i.e. [K(18-c-6)2][Ln(NR2)3]. The [K(18-c-6)2]1+ counter-cation was superior not only in the synthesis, but it also allowed the isolation of crystallographically-characterizable products from reactions of CO with the [Ln(NR2)3]1- anions that were not obtainable from the [K(crypt)]1+ analogs. Reaction of CO with [K(18-c-6)2][Ln(NR2)3], generated in situ, yielded crystals of the ynediolate products, {[(R2N)3Ln]2(μ-OC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CO)}2-, which crystallized with counter-cations possessing 2 : 3 potassium : crown ratios, i.e.{[K2(18-c-6)3]}2+, for Gd, Dy, Ho. In contrast, reaction of CO with a solution of isolated [K(18-c-6)2][Gd(NR2)3], produced crystals of an enediolate complex isolated with a counter-cation with a 2 : 2 potassium : crown ratio namely [K(18-c-6)]2 2+ in the complex [K(18-c-6)]2{[(R2N)2Gd2(μ-OCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHO)2]}.

Synthesis and Utility of Neptunium(III) Hydrocarbyl Complex

To extend organoactinide chemistry beyond uranium, reported here is the first structurally characterized transuranic hydrocarbyl complex, Np[η⁴ -Me₂ NC(H)C₆ H₅ ]₃ (1), from reaction of NpCl₄ (DME)₂ with four equivalents of K[Me₂ NC(H)C₆ H₅ ]. Unlike the U^III species, the neptunium analogue can be used to access other Np^III complexes. The reaction of 1 with three equivalents of HE₂ C(2,6-Mes₂ -C₆ H₃ ) (E=O, S) yields [(2,6-Mes₂ -C₆ H₃ )CE₂ ]₃ Np(THF)₂ , maintaining the trivalent oxidation state.
