The Case of Formic Acid on Anatase TiO2 (101): Where is the Acid Proton?

Mechanical properties of TiO2/carboxylic-acid interfaces from first-principles calculations

Nature forms structurally complex materials with a large variation of mechanical and physical properties from only very few organic compounds and minerals. Nanocomposites made from TiO2 and carboxylic-acids, two substances that are available to nature as well as materials engineers, can be seen as representative of a huge class of natural and bio-inspired materials. The hybrid interfaces between the two components are thought to determine the overall properties of the composite. Yet, little is known about the atomistic processes at those interfaces under load and their failure mechanisms. The present work models the stress-strain curves of TiO2/carboxylic-acid interfaces in the slow deformation limit for different facets and binding modes, employing density functional theory calculations. Contrary to former hypotheses, the interface rarely fails through a de-bonding of the molecule, but rather through a surface failure mechanism. Furthermore, a stress-release mechanism is discovered for the bi-dentate binding mode on the {101} facet. Deriving mechanical properties, such as the interface strength, strain at interface failure, and the elastic modulus, allows a comparison with experimental results. The calculated strengths and elastic moduli already agree qualitatively with properties of nanocomposites, despite the simplifications in the model consisting of periodic sandwich structures. The results presented here will help to improve these materials and can be directly integrated in multi-scale simulations, in order to reach a more accurate quantitative description.

Strong Metal-Support Interaction Facilitated Multicomponent Alloy Formation on Metal Oxide Support

Multicomponent alloy (MA) contains a nearly infinite number of unprecedented active sites through entropy stabilization, which is a desired platform for exploring high-performance catalysts. However, MA catalysts are usually synthesized under severe conditions, which induce support structure collapse and further deteriorate the synergy between MA and support. We propose that a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) could facilitate the formation of MA by establishing a tunnel of oxygen vacancy for metal atom transport under low reduction temperature (400-600 °C), which exemplifies the holistic design of MA catalysts without deactivating supports. PtPdCoFe MA is readily synthesized on anatase TiO2 with the help of SMSI, which exhibits good catalytic activity and stability for methane combustion. This strategy demonstrates excellent universality on various supports and multicomponent alloy compositions. Our work not only reports a holistic synthesis strategy for MA synthesis by synergizing unique properties of reducible oxides and the mixing entropy of alloy but also offers a new insight that SMSI plays a vigorous role in the formation of alloy NPs on reducible oxides.

Phase-dependent selectivity control over TiO2 in the photocatalytic oxidation of bio-polyols

Photocatalytic oxidation shows great potential in the valorization of biomass under mild conditions, while the selectivity control is particularly challenging for the complex and reactive bio-polyols. Herein, we report a selective photocatalytic process to convert bio-polyols into formic acid (FA) or carbon monoxide (CO) by controlling the phase of TiO2. The bio-polyols are facially oxidized to formic acid (FA) which is stable over rutile and could be dehydrated to CO over anatase TiO2. Through controlling the phase, FA or CO could be obtained from a wide range of bio-polyols with selectivity up to 63% or 52%. Our studies elucidate that the phase-dependent selectivity is essentially derived from the difference in the adsorption configuration of FA. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and density functional (DFT) calculations were used to study the FA decomposition process on the surface of TiO2. The phase-dependent FA decomposition is mainly derived from the different surface geometry, which affects the configuration of FA adsorption. Molecular adsorbed FA on anatase favors the dehydration of FA to CO while bidentate dissociated adsorption of FA on the rutile phase is inert to be further converted. This work provides a new horizon to the design of photocatalytic systems for biomass conversion.

The impact of aromatic π-spacers and internal acceptors in triphenylamine dyes for DSSCs: A DFT approach

In present work, the influence of internal acceptors and π-spacers on optoelectronic properties for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is investigated. The dyes consist of various internal acceptors (A), a triphenylamine donor and π-spacers combined with cyanoacrylic acid acceptor. Density functional theory (DFT) was employed to inspect the dye geometries, charge transport characteristics and electronic excitations. The frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), highest occupied molecular orbital, lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and HOMO-LUMO energy gap are assisted in the determination of suitable energy levels for electron transfer, electron injection and regeneration of dye. The required photovoltaic parameters like J_SC, ΔG_reg, ΔG_inj, LHE and other associated parameters are presented. The results demonstrate that altering the π-bridge and adding an internal acceptor to the D-π-A scaffold changes the photovoltaic properties and absorption energies. Therefore, the key objective of the current effort is to launch a theoretical groundwork for suitable operational alterations and scheme in creating successful DSSCs.

Adsorption-Controlled Wettability and Self-Cleaning of TiO2

Molecular adsorption on solids is inevitable and has significant influences on the wettability of materials, while the tuning mechanism of the wettability from molecular adsorption is yet to be understood. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we comprehensively studied the relation between the wettability of the TiO₂ surface and the adsorption of water and carboxylic acid molecules. Our results reveal that the increasing amount of surface hydroxyl groups from the decomposition adsorption of H₂O increases the hydrophilicity of TiO₂, providing molecular-level evidence for the previously proposed mechanism of photo-induced hydrophilicity. By contrast, the surface wettability becomes tunable with water contact angles changing from 0 to ∼130° through length adjustment of the adsorbed carboxylic acids. The TiO₂ surface is hydrophilic with the adsorption of short-alkyl-chain carboxylic acids (e.g., HCOOH) and becomes hydrophobic when longer-alkyl-chain carboxylic acids (H(CH₂)_nCOOH, n > 2) are present. Furthermore, long-alkyl-chain acids also increase surface oleophilicity, while the adsorption of HCOOH and CH₃COOH significantly enhances the oleophobicity of TiO₂. Water molecules can also more easily penetrate the space between oily contaminants and adsorbed short acid molecules, thereby further increasing its self-cleaning capacity. The present simulations not only reveal the mechanism of wettability caused by molecular adsorption but also provide a promising method to create materials with controllable wettability and high self-cleaning efficiency.

Importance of Nuclear Quantum Effects on Aqueous Electrolyte Transport under Confinement in Ti3C2 MXenes

Protons display a high chemical activity and strongly affect the charge storage capability in confined interlayer spaces of two-dimensional (2D) materials. As such, an accurate representation of proton dynamics under confinement is important for understanding and predicting charge storage dynamics in these materials. While often ignored in atomistic-scale simulations, nuclear quantum effects (NQEs), e.g., tunneling, can be significant under confinement even at room temperature. Using the thermostatted ring polymer molecular dynamics implementation of path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) in conjunction with the ReaxFF force field, density functional tight binding (DFTB), and NequIP neural network potential simulations, we investigate the role of NQEs on proton and water transport in bulk water and aqueous electrolytes under confinement in Ti₃C₂ MXenes. Although overall NQEs are relatively small, especially in bulk, we find that they can alter both quantitative values and qualitative trends on both proton transport and water self-diffusion under confinement relative to classical MD predictions. Therefore, our results suggest the need for NQEs to be considered to simulate aqueous systems under confinement for both qualitative and quantitative accuracy.

Modeling the Solvation and Acidity of Carboxylic Acids Using an Ab Initio Deep Neural Network Potential

Formic and acetic acid constitute the simplest of carboxylic acids, yet they exhibit fascinating chemistry in the condensed phase such as proton transfer and dimerization. The go-to method of choice for modeling these rare events have been accurate but expensive ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. In this study, we present a deep neural network potential trained using accurate ab initio data that can be used in tandem with enhanced-sampling methods to perform an efficient exploration of the free-energy surface of aqueous solutions of weak carboxylic acids. In particular, we show that our model captures proton dissociation and provides a good estimate of the pK_a, as well as the dimerization of formic and acetic acid. This provides a suitable starting point for applications in different research areas where computational efficiency coupled with the accuracy of ab initio methods is required.

Effect of Formic Acid on the Outdiffusion of Ti Interstitials at TiO2 Surfaces: A DFT+U Investigation

Ti interstitials play a key role in the surface chemistry of TiO₂. However, because of their elusive behavior, proof of their participation in catalytic processes is difficult to obtain. Here, we used DFT+U calculations to investigate the interaction between formic acid (FA) and excess Ti atoms on the rutile-TiO₂(110) and anatase-TiO₂(101) surfaces. The excess Ti atoms favor FA dissociation, while decreasing the relative stability of the bidentate bridging coordination over the monodentate one. FA species interact significantly with the Ti interstitials, favoring their outdiffusion. Eventually, Ti atoms can emerge at the surface forming chelate species, which are more stable than monodentate FA species in the case of rutile, and are even energetically favored in the case of anatase. The presence of Ti adatoms that can directly participate to surface processes should then be considered when formic acid and possibly carboxylate-bearing species are adsorbed onto TiO₂ particles.

Ordering Transitions of Liquid Crystals Triggered by Metal Oxide-catalyzed Reactions of Sulfur Oxide Species

Liquid crystals (LCs), when supported on reactive surfaces, undergo changes in ordering that can propagate over distances of micrometers, thus providing a general and facile mechanism to amplify atomic-scale transformations on surfaces into the optical scale. While reactions on organic and metal substrates have been coupled to LC-ordering transitions, metal oxide substrates, which offer unique catalytic activities for reactions involving atmospherically important chemical species such as oxidized sulfur species, have not been explored. Here, we investigate this opportunity by designing LCs that contain 4'-cyanobiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (CBCA) and respond to surface reactions triggered by parts-per-billion concentrations of SO₂ gas on anatase (101) substrates. We used electronic structure calculations to predict that the carboxylic acid group of CBCA binds strongly to anatase (101) in a perpendicular orientation, a prediction that we validated in experiments in which CBCA (0.005 mol %) was doped into an LC (4'-n-pentyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile). Both experiment and computational modeling further demonstrated that SO₃-like species, produced by a surface-catalyzed reaction of SO₂ with H₂O on anatase (101), displace CBCA from the anatase surface, resulting in an orientational transition of the LC. Experiments also reveal the LC response to be highly selective to SO₂ over other atmospheric chemical species (including H₂O, NH₃, H₂S, and NO₂), in agreement with our computational predictions for anatase (101) surfaces. Overall, we establish that the catalytic activities of metal oxide surfaces offer the basis of a new class of substrates that trigger LCs to undergo ordering transitions in response to chemical species of relevance to atmospheric chemistry.

Redox-Mediated Ambient Electrolytic Nitrogen Reduction for Hydrazine and Ammonia Generation

This work presents a redox-mediated electrolytic nitrogen reduction reaction (RM-eNRR) using polyoxometalate (POM) as the electron and proton carrier which frees the TiO₂ -based catalyst from the electrode and shifts the reduction of nitrogen to a reactor tank. The RM-eNRR process has achieved an ammonium production yield of 25.1 μg h^-1 or 5.0 μg h^-1  cm^-2 at an ammonium concentration of 6.7 ppm. With high catalyst loading, 61.0 ppm ammonium was accumulated in the electrolyte upon continuous operation, which is the highest concentration detected for ambient eNRR so far. The mechanism underlying the RM-eNRR was scrutinized both experimentally and computationally to delineate the POM-mediated charge transfer and hydrogenation process of nitrogen molecule on the catalyst. RM-eNRR is expected to provide an implementable solution to overcome the limitations in the conventional eNRR process.

Hydrogen Bonds and H3O+ Formation at the Water Interface with Formic Acid Covered Anatase TiO2

Carboxylic acid-modified TiO₂ surfaces in aqueous environment are of widespread interest, yet atomic-scale understanding of their structure is limited. We here investigate formic acid (FA) on anatase TiO₂ (101) (A-101) in contact with water using density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). Isolated FA molecules adsorbed in a deprotonated bridging bidentate (BD) form on A-101 are found to remain stable at the interface with water, with the acid proton transferred to a surface oxygen to form a surface bridging hydroxyl (O_brH). With increasing FA coverage, adsorbed monolayers of only BD and successively of alternating monodentate (MD) and BD species give rise to a higher concentration of surface O_brH's. Simulations of these adsorbed monolayers in water environment show that some protons are released from the surface O_brH's to water resulting in a negatively charged surface with nearby solvated H₃O⁺ ions. These results provide insight into the complex acid-base equilibrium between an oxide surface, adsorbates and water and can also help obtain a better understanding of the wetting properties of chemically modified TiO₂ surfaces.

Chemical Modification of Polaronic States in Anatase TiO2(101)

Two polymorphs of TiO₂, anatase and rutile, are employed in photocatalytic applications. It is broadly accepted that anatase is the more catalytically active and subsequently finds wider commercial use. In this work, we focus on the Ti³⁺ polaronic states of anatase TiO₂(101), which lie at ∼1.0 eV binding energy and are known to increase catalytic performance. Using UV-photoemission and two-photon photoemission spectroscopies, we demonstrate the capability to tune the excited state resonance of polarons by controlling the chemical environment. Anatase TiO₂(101) contains subsurface polarons which undergo sub-band-gap photoexcitation to states ∼2.0 eV above the Fermi level. Formic acid adsorption dramatically influences the polaronic states, increasing the binding energy by ∼0.3 eV. Moreover, the photoexcitation oscillator strength changes significantly, resonating with states ∼3.0 eV above the Fermi level. We show that this behavior is likely due to the surface migration of subsurface oxygen vacancies.

The Early Steps of Molecule-to-Material Conversion in Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD): A Case Study

Transition metal complexes with β-diketonate and diamine ligands are valuable precursors for chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of metal oxide nanomaterials, but the metal-ligand bond dissociation mechanism on the growth surface is not yet clarified in detail. We address this question by density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) in combination with the Blue Moon (BM) statistical sampling approach. AIMD simulations of the Zn β-diketonate-diamine complex Zn(hfa)₂TMEDA (hfa = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedionate; TMEDA = N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine), an amenable precursor for the CVD of ZnO nanosystems, show that rolling diffusion of this precursor at 500 K on a hydroxylated silica slab leads to an octahedral-to-square pyramidal rearrangement of its molecular geometry. The free energy profile of the octahedral-to-square pyramidal conversion indicates that the process barrier (5.8 kcal/mol) is of the order of magnitude of the thermal energy at the operating temperature. The formation of hydrogen bonds with surface hydroxyl groups plays a key role in aiding the dissociation of a Zn-O bond. In the square-pyramidal complex, the Zn center has a free coordination position, which might promote the interaction with incoming reagents on the deposition surface. These results provide a valuable atomistic insight on the molecule-to-material conversion process which, in perspective, might help to tailor by design the first nucleation stages of the target ZnO-based nanostructures.

Precision Molecular Threading/Dethreading

The general principles guiding the design of molecular machines based on interlocked structures are well known. Nonetheless, the identification of suitable molecular components for a precise tuning of the energetic parameters that determine the mechanical link is still challenging. Indeed, what are the reasons of the "all-or-nothing" effect, which turns a molecular "speed-bump" into a stopper in pseudorotaxane-based architectures? Here we investigate the threading and dethreading processes for a representative class of molecular components, based on symmetric dibenzylammonium axles and dibenzo[24]crown-8 ether, with a joint experimental-computational strategy. From the analysis of quantitative data and an atomistic insight, we derive simple rules correlating the kinetic behaviour with the substitution pattern, and provide rational guidelines for the design of modules to be integrated in molecular switches and motors with sophisticated dynamic features.

Recent Results on Computational Molecular Modeling of The Origins of Life

In the last decade of research in the origins of life, there has been an increase in the interest on theoretical molecular modeling methods aimed to improve the accuracy and speed of the algorithms that solve the molecular mechanics and chemical reactions of the matter. Research on the scenarios of prebiotic chemistry has also advanced. The presented work attempts to discuss the latest computational techniques and trends implemented so far. Although it is difficult to cover the full extent of the current publications, we tried to orient the reader into the modern tendencies and challenges faced by those who are in the origins of life field.

Anharmonic calculations of vibrational spectra for molecular adsorbates: A divide-and-conquer semiclassical molecular dynamics approach

The vibrational spectroscopy of adsorbates is becoming an important investigation tool for catalysis and material science. This paper presents a semiclassical molecular dynamics method able to reproduce the vibrational energy levels of systems composed by molecules adsorbed on solid surfaces. Specifically, we extend our divide-and-conquer semiclassical method for power spectra calculations to gas-surface systems and interface it with plane-wave electronic structure codes. The Born-Oppenheimer classical dynamics underlying the semiclassical calculation is full dimensional, and our method includes not only the motion of the adsorbate but also those of the surface and the bulk. The vibrational spectroscopic peaks related to the adsorbate are accounted together with the most coupled phonon modes to obtain spectra amenable to physical interpretations. We apply the method to the adsorption of CO, NO, and H₂O on the anatase-TiO₂ (101) surface. We compare our semiclassical results with the single-point harmonic estimates and the classical power spectra obtained from the same trajectory employed in the semiclassical calculation. We find that CO and NO anharmonic effects of fundamental vibrations are similarly reproduced by the classical and semiclassical dynamics and that H₂O adsorption is fully and properly described in its overtone and combination band relevant components only by the semiclassical approach.
