Loading Photochromic Molecules into a Luminescent Metal-Organic Framework for Information Anticounterfeiting

A novel viologen-based hybrid crystalline material for photochromic glass films, information storage and anti-counterfeiting

Information storage and anti-counterfeiting are two very important applications of photochromic materials. Photochromic materials with both information storage and anti-counterfeiting should meet the requirements including fast coloration, good stability and reversibility, low storage cost, and practical application value. Herein, a novel viologen-based coordination polymer, Cd[(pbpy)0.5(HBTC)Cl]·2H2O (1) (pbpy = 1,1'-[1,4-phenylenebis-(methylene)]bis(4,4'-bipyridinium); HBTC2- = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid), has been constructed. Compound 1 not only exhibits selective amine sensing properties, but also shows excellent photochromic properties, and the anti-counterfeiting of a two-dimensional code can be also realized through the color-changing behavior. Meanwhile, photochromic glass films of compound 1 were prepared, and compared to traditional optical information storage technology, these photochromic glass films have better water resistance and stability, improving their practical application stability. This work has further enriched the application of photochromic materials in the field of sensing, anti-counterfeiting and information storage.

Switching from Molecules to Functional Materials: Breakthroughs in Photochromism With MOFs

Photochromic materials with properties that can be dynamically tailored as a function of external stimuli are a rapidly expanding field driven by applications in areas ranging from molecular computing, nanotechnology, or photopharmacology to programable heterogeneous catalysis. Challenges arise, however, when translating the rapid, solution-like response of stimuli-responsive moieties to solid-state materials due to the intermolecular interactions imposed through close molecular packing in bulk solids. As a result, the integration of photochromic compounds into synthetically programable porous matrices, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), has come to the forefront as an emerging strategy for photochromic material development. This review highlights how the core principles of reticular chemistry (on the example of MOFs) play a critical role in the photochromic material performance, surpassing the limitations previously observed in solution or solid state. The symbiotic relationship between photoresponsive compounds and porous frameworks with a focus on how reticular synthesis creates avenues toward tailorable photoisomerization kinetics, directional energy and charge transfer, switchable gas sorption, and synergistic chromophore communication is discussed. This review not only focuses on the recent cutting-edge advancements in photochromic material development, but also highlights novel, vital-to-pursue pathways for multifaceted functional materials in the realms of energy, technology, and biomedicine.

Low-dose electron microscopy imaging for beam-sensitive metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered significant attention in recent years owing to their exceptional properties. Understanding the intricate relationship between the structure of a material and its properties is crucial for guiding the synthesis and application of these materials. (Scanning) Transmission electron microscopy (S)TEM imaging stands out as a powerful tool for structural characterization at the nanoscale, capable of detailing both periodic and aperiodic local structures. However, the high electron-beam sensitivity of MOFs presents substantial challenges in their structural characterization using (S)TEM. This paper summarizes the latest advancements in low-dose high-resolution (S)TEM imaging technology and its application in MOF material characterization. It covers aspects such as framework structure, defects, and surface and interface analysis, along with the distribution of guest molecules within MOFs. This review also discusses emerging technologies like electron ptychography and outlines several prospective research directions in this field.

Positively Photo-Responsive Adsorption Over Binary Copper Porphyrin Framework and Graphene Film Sorbents

Photo-responsive adsorption has emerged as a vibrant area because it provides a promising route to reduce the energy consumption of the traditional adsorption separation. However, the current methodology to fabricate photo-responsive sorbents is still subject to the photo-deforming molecular units. In this study, a new initiative of photo-dissociated electron-hole pairs is proposed to generate amazing adsorption activity, and prove its feasibility. Employing CuPP [PP = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin] framework nanosheets compounded with graphene, binary film (BF) sorbents are successfully fabricated. The paradigmatic BF nanostructure brings about efficiently photo-excited electron-hole pairs with durable enough lifetime to meet the needs of microscopic adsorption equilibrium, which ultimately alters the electron density distribution of adsorption surface, and thus markedly modulates the adsorption activity. Therefore, an amazing photo-enhanced adsorption capability for the index gas CO can be gotten. Once exposed to the visible-light at 420 nm, the CO adsorption capacity (0 °C, 1 bar) is risen from 0.23 mmol g-1 in the darkness to 1.66 mmol g-1, changed by + 622%. This is essentially different from majority of current photo-responsive sorbents based on photo-deforming molecular units, of which adsorption capability is only decreased with photo-induction, and the maximum rate of change reported is just -54%.

Ultrafast mechanosynthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks with UV and NIR photoswitching of photochromic/photothermal behavior

We present a facile and ultrafast mechanosynthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks |C10N2H10‖HC2O4|2 with UV and NIR bidirectional photoswitching of photochromic/photothermal behavior. The reaction time is reduced to mere seconds, and the method is both high-yield and scalable.

"On-the-Fly" Nonadiabatic Dynamics Simulation on the Ultrafast Photoisomerization of a Molecular Photoswitch Iminothioindoxyl: An RMS-CASPT2 Investigation

Iminothioindoxyl (ITI) is a new class of photoswitch that exhibits many excellent properties including well-separated absorption bands in the visible region for both conformers, ultrafast Z to E photoisomerization as well as the millisecond reisomerization at room temperature for the E isomer, and switchable ability in both solids and various solvents. However, the underlying ultrafast photoisomerization mechanism at the atomic level remains unclear. In this work, we have employed a combination of high-level RMS-CASPT2-based static electronic structure calculations and nonadiabatic dynamics simulations to investigate the ultrafast photoisomerization dynamics of ITI. Based on the minimum-energy structures, minimum-energy conical intersections, linear interpolation internal coordinate paths, and nonadiabatic dynamics simulations, the overall photoisomerization scenario of ITI upon excitation is established. Upon excitation around 416 nm, the molecule will be excited to the S2 state considering its close energy to the experimentally measured absorption maximum and larger oscillator strength, from which ultrafast decay of S2 to S1 state can take place efficiently with a time constant of 62 fs. However, the photoisomerization is not likely to complete in the S2 state since the dihedral associated with the Z to E isomerization changes little during the relaxation. Upon relaxing to the S1 state, the molecule will decay to the S0 state ultrafast with a time constant of 232 fs. In contrast, the decay of the S1 state is important for the isomerization considering that the dihedral related to the isomerization of the hopping structures is close to 90°. Therefore, the S1/S0 intersection region should be important for the isomerization of ITI. Arriving at the S0 state, the molecule can either go back to the original Z reactant or isomerize to the E products. At the end of the 500 fs simulation time, the E configuration accounts for nearly 37% of the final structures. Moreover, the photoisomerization mechanism is different from the isomerization mechanism in the ground state; i.e., instead of the inversion mechanism in the ground state, the photoisomerization prefers the rotation mechanism. Our results not only agree well with previous experimental studies but also provide some novel insights that could be helpful for future improvements in the performance of the ITI photoswitches.

Photochromic Ln-MOFs: A Platform for Metal-Photoswitch Cooperativity

Optoelectronic devices based on lanthanide-containing materials are an emergent area of research due to imminent interest in a new generation of diode materials, optical and magnetic sensors, and ratiometric thermometers. Tailoring material properties through the employment of photo- or thermochromic moieties is a powerful approach that requires a deep fundamental understanding of possible cooperativity between lanthanide-based metal centers and integrated switchable units. In this work, we probe this concept through the synthesis, structural analysis, and spectroscopic characterization of novel photochromic lanthanide-based metal-organic materials containing noncoordinatively integrated photoresponsive 4,4'-azopyridine between lanthanide-based metal centers. As a result, a photophysical material response tailored on demand through the incorporation of photochromic compounds within a rigid matrix was investigated. The comprehensive analysis of photoresponsive metal-organic materials includes single-crystal X-ray diffraction and diffuse reflectance spectroscopic studies that provide guiding principles necessary for understanding photochromic unit-lanthanide-based metal-organic framework (MOF) cooperativity. Furthermore, steady-state and time-resolved diffuse reflectance spectroscopic studies revealed a rapid rate of photoresponsive moiety attenuation upon its integration within the rigid matrix of lanthanide-based MOFs in comparison with that in solution, highlighting a unique role and synergy that occurred between stimuli-responsive moieties and the lanthanide-based MOF platform, allowing for tunability and control of material photoisomerization kinetics.

Conformation-Driven Responsive 1D and 2D Lanthanide-Metal-Organic Framework Heterostructures for High-Security Photonic Barcodes

Development of luminescent segmented heterostructures featuring multiple spatial-responsive blocks is important to achieve miniaturized photonic barcodes toward anti-counterfeit applications. Unfortunately, dynamic manipulation of the spatial color at micro/nanoscale still remains a formidable challenge. Here, a straightforward strategy is proposed to construct spatially varied heterostructures through amplifying the conformation-driven response in flexible lanthanide-metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs), where the thermally induced minor conformational changes in organic donors dramatically modulate the photoluminescence of Ln acceptors. Notably, compositionally and structurally distinct heterostructures (1D and 2D) are further constructed through epitaxial growth of multiple responsive MOF blocks benefiting from the isomorphous Ln-MOF structures. The thermally controlled emissive colors with distinguishable spectra carry the fingerprint information of a specific heterostructure, thus allowing for the effective construction of smart photonic barcodes with spatially responsive characteristics. The results will deepen the understanding of the conformation-driven responsive mechanism and also provide guidance to fabricate complex stimuli-responsive hierarchical microstructures for advanced optical recording and high-security labels.

Carbon Dots: A Bright Future as Anticounterfeiting Encoding Agents

Counterfeit products and data vulnerability present significant challenges in contemporary society. Hence, various methods and technologies are explored for anticounterfeiting encoding, with luminescent tracers, particularly luminescent carbon dots (CDs), emerging as a notable solution. CDs offer promising contributions to product security, environmental sustainability, and the circular economy. This critical review aims to highlight the luminescence responsiveness of CDs to physical and chemical stimuli, achieved through nanoengineering their chemical structure. The discussion will delve into the various tunable luminescence mechanisms and decay times of CDs, investigating preferential excitations such as up-conversion, delayed fluorescence, fluorescence, room temperature phosphorescence, persistent luminescence, energy and charge transfer, as well as photo-chemical interactions. These insights are crucial for advancing anticounterfeiting solutions. Following this exploration, a systematic review will focus on the research of luminescent CDs' smart encoding applications, encompassing anticounterfeiting, product tracing, quality certification, and information encryption. Finally, the review will address key challenges in implementing CDs-based technology, providing specific insights into strategies aimed at maximizing their stability and efficacy in anticounterfeiting encoding applications.

Radical-Induced Photochromic Silver(I) Metal-Organic Frameworks: Alternative Topology, Dynamic Photoluminescence and Efficient Photothermal Conversion Modulated by Anionic Guests

Photogenerated radicals are an indispensable member of the state-of-the-art photochromic material family, as they can effectively modulate the photoluminescence and photothermal conversion performance of radical-induced photochromic complexes. Herein, two novel radical-induced photochromic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Ag(TEPE)](AC) ⋅ 7/4H2O ⋅ 5/4EtOH (1) and [Ag(TEPE)](NC) ⋅ 3H2O ⋅ EtOH (2), are reported. Distinctly different topological networks can be obtained by judiciously introducing alternative π-conjugated anionic guests, including a new topological structure (named as sfm) first reported in this work, describing as 4,4,4,4-c net. EPR data and UV-Vis spectra prove the radical-induced photochromic mechanism. Dynamic photochromism exhibits tunability in a wide CIE color space, with a linear segment from yellow to red for 1, while a curved coordinate line for 2, resulting in colorful emission from blue to orange. Moreover, photogenerated TEPE* radicals effectively activate the near-infrared (NIR) photothermal conversion effect of MOFs. Under 1 W cm-2 808 nm laser irradiation, the surface temperatures of photoproducts 1* and 2* can reach ~160 °C and ~120 °C, respectively, with competitive NIR photothermal conversion efficiencies η=51.8 % (1*) and 36.2 % (2*). This work develops a feasible electrostatic compensation strategy to accurately introduce photoactive anionic guests into MOFs to construct multifunctional radical-induced photothermal conversion materials with tunable photoluminescence behavior.

Water-sensitive fluorescent microgel inks to produce verifiable information for highly secured anti-counterfeiting

The decryption and verification of encrypted information via a simple and efficient method is always difficult and challenging in the field of information security. Herein, a series of water-sensitive fluorescent microgels are fabricated for highly secured anti-counterfeiting with authenticity identification. The initial negatively charged microgels (MG) are made up of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), acrylic acid (AAc) and anthracen-9-yl acrylate (9-ANA, blue fluorescent monomer). The prepared MGs can bind cationic fluorescent dyes such as 5-aminofluorescein (FITC, green fluorescent dye) and rhodamine B (Rh B, red fluorescent dye) via electrostatic interaction, emitting multi-fluorescent colors based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process. Furthermore, the fluorescence colors of MG-derived systems can be rapidly changed by swelling in water, which can block the FRET process and change the aggregation state of dyes. With the assistance of inkjet printing, multi-color security patterns can be designed and encoded, which can be revealed by UV irradiation and further verified by water stimulation. This study has pioneered a novel strategy to verify the authenticity of decrypted information, which greatly improves the security level of information.

Visible-Light-Responsive Photoreversible Multi-Color Switching for Rewritable Light-Printing and Information Display

Photoreversible color switching systems (PCSSs) exhibiting multi-color responses to visible light are favored for sustainable societal development over those relying on ultraviolet light due to safer operation and better penetration depth. Here, a PCSS capable of multi-color switching responsive to visible light based on highly photoreductive rutile-phase Sn-doped TiO2-x nanoparticles is reported. The Sn-doping significantly red-shifts the absorption band of the nanoparticles to the visible region, improving charge separation and transfer efficiencies and introducing Ti3+ species and oxygen vacancies as internal sacrificial electron donors for scavenging photogenerated holes. The resulting Sn-doped TiO2-x nanoparticles feature exceptional photoreduction ability and activity, thereby enabling photoreversible color switching of various redox dyes operational under visible light illumination. Furthermore, multi-color switching can be achieved via the color overlay effect by combining different redox dyes in one system, opening the door to many advanced applications, as demonstrated in their successful uses for developing visible-light-driven rewritable multi-color light-printing systems and visual information displays.

Cephalopod-Inspired Chemical-Gated Hydrogel Actuation Systems for Information 3D-Encoding Display

Cephalopods evolve the acetylcholine-gated actuation control function of their skin muscles, which enables their dynamic/static multimode display capacities for achieving perfectly spatial control over the colors/patterns on every inch of skin. Reproduction of artificial analogs that exhibit similar multimodal display is essential to reach advanced information three-dimensional (3D) encoding with higher security than the classic 2D-encoding strategy, but remains underdeveloped. The core difficulty is how to replicate such chemical-gated actuation control function into artificial soft actuating systems. Herein, this work proposes to develop azobenzene-functionalized poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) hydrogel systems, whose upper critical solution temperature (UCST) type actuation responsiveness can be intelligently programmed or even gated by the addition of hydrophilic α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) molecules for reversible association with pendant azobenzene moieties via supramolecular host-guest interactions. By employing such α-CD-gated hydrogel actuator as an analogue of cephalopods' skin muscle, biomimetic mechanically modulated multicolor fluorescent display systems are designed, which demonstrate a conceptually new α-CD-gated "thermal stimulation-hydrogel actuation-fluorescence output" display mechanism. Consequently, high-security 3D-encoding information carriers with an unprecedented combination of single-input multiple-output, dynamic/static dual-mode and spatially controlled display capacities are achieved. This bioinspired strategy brings functional-integrated features for artificial display systems and opens previously unidentified avenues for information security.

Hydro-Photo-Thermo-Responsive Multicolor Luminescence Switching of a Ternary MOF Hybrid for Advanced Information Anticounterfeiting

Developing smart materials capable of solid-state multicolor photoluminescence (PL) switching in response to multistimuli is highly desirable for advanced anticounterfeiting. Here, a ternary MOF hybrid showing hydro-photo-thermo-responsive multicolor PL switching in the solid state is presented. This hybrid is constructed by co-immobilizing Eu3+ and methyl viologen (MV) cations within an anionic MOF via the cation-exchange approach. The confined guest cations are well arranged in the framework channels, facilitating the synergistic realization of stimuli-responsive multiple PL color-switching through intermolecular coupling. The hybrid undergoes a rapid and reversible PL color-switching from red to blue upon water simulation, which is achieved by activating the blue emission of the framework linker while simultaneously quenching the Eu3+ emission. Furthermore, the hybrid displays photo-thermo-responsive PL switching from red to dark. UV-light irradiation or heating triggers the chromic conversion of MV to its colored radical form, which exhibits perfect spectral overlap with Eu3+, thus activating Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from Eu3+ to MV radicals and quenching the Eu3+ emission. Inspired by these results, PL morse patterns are designed and fabricated using a novel triple-level encryption strategy, showcasing the exciting potential of this hybrid in advanced anticounterfeiting applications.

Efficient Multi-stimulus-Responsive Luminescent Eu(III)-Modified HOFs Materials: Detecting Thiram and Caffeic Acid and Constructing a Flexible Substrate Anti-counterfeiting Platform

The powerful capability of multi-stimulus-responsive luminescent hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) to respond to external chemical or physical stimuli in various manners makes them appealing in the luminescence anti-counterfeiting field. Herein, a novel Eu3+-functionalized HOF (Eu@GC-2) that combines the emission of HOFs with the characteristic emission of Eu3+ ions has been successfully synthesized, which can generate various fluorescence at different excitation wavelengths. Eu@GC-2 has enormous potential as a raw material for a paper-based sensor that is designed for detecting the pesticides thiram and caffeic acid in crops with favorable selectivity, anti-interference, and high efficiency. Based on the above excellent properties, Ln3+-functionalized HOFs (Ln@GC-2) were then employed to produce four luminescent anti-counterfeiting inks. With the incorporation of back-propagation neural network and Gray code conversion functions, a multi-stimulus-responsive luminescent anti-counterfeiting platform, coregulated by the excitation light and the chemical reagent, has been constructed. This approach can not only achieve multiple encryptions and fast information identification but also enhance the code-breaking complexity, making it an efficient strategy for information encryption and decryption.

Chelating Coordination Regulated Photochromic Electrospun Nanofibers for Waterproof and Long-Color-Retention Rewritable Wearables

Photochromic materials with rapid color-switching, long color retention times, and rewritability are crucial for meeting the requirements of future rewritable ink-free media. However, these requirements are challenging to satisfy simultaneously due to the inherent constraints among these features. Herein, a novel photochromic nanofiber nonwoven fabric was designed and constructed based on a conjugated organic-inorganic hybrid structure through electrospinning and hot-pressing techniques. The as-prepared fabric can change color in merely 5 s under UV irradiation and can reach saturation within 2 min. In addition, upon the introduction of a potent metal chelator, its color retention time exceeds 14 days under ambient conditions, significantly longer than that of most rewritable materials recently reported (several hours to 5 days). Moreover, the fabric exhibits high writing resolution and can be photoprinted and heat-erased for over 100 cycles while still retaining 96% of its initial reflectivity. Hydrophobic thermoplastic polyurethane provides the fabric with excellent waterproof and antifouling properties, thus preventing the composite from swelling or collecting graffiti due to moisture or dust. This work exploits a competitive approach for designing flexible, rewritable, and superior functional wearables with practical applications.

Temperature-controlled tunable emission of Bi3+-doped Rb2SnCl6 all-inorganic vacancy ordered lead-free perovskite for advanced anticounterfeiting

At present, tuning the luminescence characteristics of phosphors by external physical stimuli such as temperature and pressure has attracted the interest of researchers. However, the emission-tunable luminescence processes by temperature or pressure in lead-free perovskite with ordered vacancy materials have not been systematically studied. In this study, Bi3+-doped Rb2SnCl6 crystals were successfully synthesized using a simple precipitation method, and these crystals demonstrated a remarkable enhancement of luminescence intensity compared with the unannealed ones at 140-200 °C, and with a red-shift in the emission peak from 450 to 500 nm. It was found that the annealing treatment increased the Bi-Cl bond length leading to emission red-shift and achieved the change in the emission intensity due to the band gap modulation of the material. Furthermore, a candidate material for the color-changing optical security strategies was obtained by combining the Bi3+-doped Rb2SnCl6 phosphor and printing ink. This work is a valuable reference for the rational design of luminescent perovskites with promising new functionalities and stimulates the great potential of luminescent perovskites in developing promising phosphors for advanced anticounterfeiting.

Metal Clusters Confined in Chiral Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework for Circularly Polarized-Luminescence Inks

Chiroptical activities arising in nanoclusters (NCs) are emerging as one of the most dynamic areas of modern science. However, devising an overarching strategy that is capable of concurrently enhancing the photoluminescence (PL) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of metal NCs remains a formidable challenge. Herein, gold and silver nanoclusters (AuNCs, AgNCs) are endowed with CPL, for the first time, through a universal host-guest approach─centered around perturbing a chiral microenvironment within chiral hosts, simultaneously enhancing emissions. Remarkably, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of AuNCs has undergone an increase of over 200 times upon confinement, escalating from 0.05% to 12%, and demonstrates a CPL response. Moreover, a three-dimensional (3D) model termed "NCs@CMOF" featuring CPL activity is created using metal cluster-based assembly inks through the process of 3D printing. This work introduces a potentially straightforward and versatile approach for achieving both PL enhancement and CPL activities in metal clusters.

Lanthanide-Polyoxometalate-Based Film with Reversible Photochromism and Luminescent Switching Properties for Erasable Inkless Security Printing

Security printing is of the utmost importance in the information era. However, the excessive use of inks and paper still faces many economic and environmental issues. Thus, developing erasable inkless security printing materials is a remarkable strategy to save resources, protect the environment, and improve information security. To this endeavor, a photoresponsive lanthanide-polyoxometalate-doped gelatin film with high transparency was developed through the solution casting method. Attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the electrostatic and hydrogen bond interactions between gelatin and lanthanide-polyoxometalate. Absorption spectra, luminescent spectra, and digital images indicated that the film displayed reversible photochromism behavior and was accompanied by luminescent switching property upon exposure to UV irradiation and oxygen (in the dark) alternately, which allowed its potential application as a reprintable medium for inkless security printing. The printed information can be erased upon exposure to oxygen in the dark, and the film can be reused for printing again. The film exhibited excellent erasability, reprintability, renewability, and low toxicity. In addition, multiple encryption strategies were designed to improve information security. This work offers an attractive alternative strategy for constructing a reprintable film for inkless security printing in terms of simplifying the preparation process, saving resources, and protecting the environment.

Photoswitchable Radical State in Nanoporous Metal-Organic Framework Films with Embedded Hexaarylbiimidazole

Photoresponsive materials enable dynamic remote control of their fundamental properties. The incorporation of photochromic molecules in nanoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provides a unique opportunity to tailor the material properties, including the interaction between the MOF host and guest molecules in the pores. Here, a MOF film of type HKUST-1 with embedded hexaarylbiimidazole (HABI), undergoing reversible light-induced reactions between the stable dimer state and the metastable radical state, is presented. The switching between the dimer and radical form is shown by infrared, UV-vis, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. By transient uptake experiments with ethanol and methanol as probe molecules, we show that the dimer-radical switching impacts the host-guest interaction and, in particular, modifies the uptake amount and diffusion coefficient of the guest molecules. For ethanol, the diffusion slows down by 75%. This research presents the first MOF material with photoswitchable (meta)stable dimer and radical molecules, and it contributes to the advancement of photoresponsive nanoporous materials.

Recent Advances in Functional Materials for Optical Data Storage

In the current data age, the fundamental research related to optical applications has been rapidly developed. Countless new-born materials equipped with distinct optical properties have been widely explored, exhibiting tremendous values in practical applications. The optical data storage technique is one of the most significant topics of the optical applications, which is considered as the prominent solution for conquering the challenge of the explosive increase in mass data, to achieve the long-life, low-energy, and super high-capacity data storage. On this basis, our review outlines the representative reports for mainly introducing the functional systems based on the newly established materials applied in the optical storage field. According to the material categories, the representative functional systems are divided into rare-earth doped nanoparticles, graphene, and diarylethene. In terms of the difference of structural features and delicate properties among the three materials, the application in optical storage is comprehensively illustrated in the review. Meanwhile, the potential opportunities and critical challenges of optical storage are also discussed in detail.

N, S/P co-doped hemicellulose-based carbon dots with tunable fluorescence for anti-counterfeiting

Based on the status quo of high energy consumption and low utilization of nonfibrous components in traditional pulp and paper industry, a sustainable and facile approach was proceeded to realize the high-value utilization of hemicelluloses from papermaking waste liquor. The hemicellulose waste produced by ethanol precipitation in pre-hydrolysis liquor (PHL), was directly used to fabricate carbon dots (CDs) via a hydrothermal method. The hydrothermal carbonization and heteroatoms doping contributed to the sp2 conjugated domains and surface defect states of CDs, thus creating the bright blue (N-CDs), deep cyan (N/S-CDs), and light cyan (N/P-CDs) fluorescence under UV radiation. The XPS analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the large sp2 conjugated system and the synergistic effect of CO, N-(C)3, CS, and PO groups promoted the narrow of band gap and the red-shift of fluorescence emission. Importantly, the prepared CDs grew in situ on cotton fibers, showed excellent fluorescent performance. The obtained CDs could be also utilized to prepare anti-counterfeiting film and ink due to their excellent optical features, verifying the great potential application as security material. The feasible strategy of the high-value conversion of biomass waste opens a window of opportunity for the practical anti-counterfeiting utilizations.

Assembly of an iron-based complex into a metal-organic framework: a space confinement strategy for isolation of mono-iron complexes to protect from dimerization

Non-heme mononuclear iron complexes, especially when supported by tripodal tetradentate ligands, show promising C-H bond activation efficiency in catalytic reactions. Nevertheless, they intrinsically decay readily to their dinuclear form, and the dimerization process is inevitable in homogenous solution, which dramatically hinders their further application. Hence, we demonstrate that the mononuclear iron complex [(TPA)FeII-2L]2+ (L = labile ligands, mainly solvent molecules) was successfully encapsulated in a highly robust metal-organic framework UiO-66 via a two-step "ship-in-a-bottle" strategy. The nearly perfect size matching of the octahedral cages of the host UiO-66 provides ideal space confinement for the guest complex to protect from dimerization and dramatically increases the mono-nuclear complex stability compared to its un-confined state. The successful encapsulation of [(TPA)FeII-2L]2+ in UiO-66 was verified thoroughly by spectroscopy, microscopy, N2 adsorption, and electrochemistry characterization techniques. This work shows that encapsulating an unstable molecular complex in MOFs via a two-step "ship-in-a-bottle" strategy highlights opportunities for extending the heterogenization of homogeneous complexes.

Lanthanide 3D Supramolecular Framework Boosts Stable Perovskite Solar Cells with High UV Utilization

In this work, the ligand-to-metal charge transition and Förster resonance energy transfer process is exploited to derive lanthanide-organic framework (Tb-cpon) modified perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with enhanced performance under UV irradiation. Tb-cpon-modified PSCs exhibit rapid response and reduced degradation due to energy downconversion facilitated by effective coupling of UV-sensitive chromophores to lanthanide luminescent centers, enhancing the spectral response range of the composite films. Furthermore, the characteristic changes of precursor particle sizes suggest formation of Tb-cpon adducts as intermediate products, leading to enhanced crystallinity and reduced defect concentrations in the Tb-cpon-perovskite hybrid film. Accordingly, the Tb-cpon-modified PSC devices obtain a champion efficiency up to 23.72% as well as a sensitive photovoltaic conversion even under pure UV irradiation. Moreover, the unencapsulated devices maintain more than 80% of the initial efficiency after continuous irradiation under a 310 nm UV lamp for 24 h (from the Au electrode side), compared to 21% for the control devices.

Photo-Responsive Carbon Capture over Metalloporphyrin-C60 Metal-Organic Frameworks via Charge-Transfer

Great efforts have been devoted to the study of photo-responsive adsorption, but its current methodology largely depends on the well-defined photochromic units and their photo-driven molecular deformation. Here, a methodology to fabricate nondeforming photo-responsive sorbents is successfully exploited. With C60-fullerene doping in metalloporphyrin metal-organic frameworks (PCN-M, M = Fe, Co, or Ni) and intensively interacting with the metalloporphyrin sites, effective charge-transfer can be achieved over the metalloporphyrin-C60 architectures once excited by the light at 350 to 780 nm. The electron density distribution and the resultant adsorption activity are thus changed by excited states, which are also stable enough to meet the timescale of microscopic adsorption equilibrium. The charge-transfer over Co(II)-porphyrin-C60 is proved to be more efficient than the Fe(II)- and Ni(II)-porphyrin-C60 sites, as well as than all the metalloporphyrin sites, so the CO2 adsorption capacity (CAC; at 0 °C and 1 bar) over the C60-doped PCN-Co can be largely improved from 2.05 mmol g-1 in the darkness to 2.69 mmol g-1 with light, increased by 31%, in contrast to photo-irresponsive CAC over all C60-undoped PCN-M sorbents and only the photo-loss CAC over C60.

Conventional Non-Fluorescent Polymers: Unconventional Security Inks for Data Storage and Multidimensional Photonic Cryptography

Traditional security inks relying on fluorescent/phosphorescent molecules are facing increasing risks of forgery or tampering due to their simple readout scheme (i.e., UV-light irradiation) and the advancement of counterfeiting technologies. In this work, a multidimensional data-encryption method based on non-fluorescent polymers via a "lock-key" mechanism is developed. The non-fluorescent invisible polymer inks serve as the "lock" for data-encryption, while the anti-rigidochromic fluorophores that can distinctively light up the polymer inks with programed emissions are "keys" for decryption. The emission of decrypted data is prescribed by polymer chemical structure, molecular weight, topology, copolymer sequence, and phase structure, and shows distinct intensity, wavelength, and chirality compared with the intrinsic emission of fluorophores. Therefore, the data is triply encrypted and naturally gains a high-security level, e.g., only one out of 20 000 keys can access the only correct readout from 40 000 000 possible outputs in a three-polymers-based data-encryption matrix. Note that fluorophores lacking anti-rigidochrimism cannot selectively light up the inks and fail in data-decryption. Further, the diverse topologies, less well-defined structures, and random-coiled shapes of polymers make it impossible for them to be imitated. This work offers a new design for security inks and boosts data security levels beyond the reach of conventional fluorescent inks.

Research Progress on Metal-Organic Frameworks by Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), composed of metal nodes and inorganic linkers, are promising for a wide range of applications due to their unique periodic frameworks. Understanding structure-activity relationships can facilitate the development of new MOFs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a powerful technique to characterize the microstructures of MOFs at the atomic scale. In addition, it is possible to directly visualize the microstructural evolution of MOFs in real time under working conditions via in situ TEM setups. Although MOFs are sensitive to high-energy electron beams, much progress has been made due to the development of advanced TEM. In this review, we first introduce the main damage mechanisms for MOFs under electron-beam irradiation and two strategies to minimize these damages: low-dose TEM and cryo-TEM. Then we discuss three typical techniques to analyze the microstructure of MOFs, including three-dimensional electron diffraction, imaging using direct-detection electron-counting cameras, and iDPC-STEM. Groundbreaking milestones and research advances of MOFs structures obtained with these techniques are highlighted. In situ TEM studies are reviewed to provide insights into the dynamics of MOFs induced by various stimuli. Additionally, perspectives are analyzed for promising TEM techniques in the research of MOFs' structures.

Engineering of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for thermometry

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs ) are excellent candidates for use in chemistry, material sciences and engineering thanks to their interesting qualitative features and potential applications. Quite interestingly, the luminescence of MOFs can be engineered by regulation of the ligand design, metal ion selection and encapsulation of guest molecules within the MOF cavity. Temperature is a very crucial physical parameter and the market share of temperature sensors is rapidly expanding with technology and medicinal advancement. Among the wide variety of available temperature sensors, recently MOFs have emerged as potential temperature sensors with the capacity to precisely measure the temperature. Lanthanide-based thermometry has advantages because of its ratiometric response ability, high quantum yield and photostability, and therefore lanthanide-based MOFs were initially focused on to construct MOF thermometers. As science and technology have gradually changed, it has been observed that with the inclusion of dye, quantum dots, etc. within the MOF cavity, it is possible to develop MOF-based thermometry. This review consolidates the recent advances of MOF-based ratiometric thermometers and their mechanism of energy transfer for determining the temperature (thermal sensitivity and temperature uncertainty). In addition, some fundamental points are also discussed, such as concepts for guiding the design of MOF ratiometric thermometers, thermometric performance and tuning the properties of MOF thermometers.

Photochromic Tungsten Oxide Quantum Dots-based Fluorescent Photoswitches towards Dual-mode Anti-counterfeiting Application

Development of new anti-counterfeiting technology to increase the difficulty of imitation and decoding is becoming increasingly important, but still remains challenging yet. In this work, we report the design of new fluorescence photoswitches based on photochromic tungsten oxide quantum dots (WO₃ QDs) for dual-mode anti-counterfeiting applications. Complexing photochromic WO₃ QDs with fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) enables the construction of a photoswitchable fluorescence system (WO₃-AuNCs) based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Detailed spectral and photophysical characterization showed that WO₃ QDs well-retain the photochromic properties within the WO₃-AuNCs composite. Importantly, photoresponsive and highly reversible switching of both color and fluorescence signals was successfully achieved by simply alternating the irradiation with UV and visible light. Potential utility of photoswitchable WO₃-AuNCs composite as novel dual-mode anti-counterfeiting materials has been successfully demonstrated, including photoswitchable ink, rewritable paper and number encryption. Compared with other anti-counterfeiting materials, the present photochromic WO₃ QDs-based fluorescent switches are easily synthesized and handled, and they can provide dual security mode (color and fluorescence). This work provides a generable WO₃ QDs-assisted strategy of fabricating advanced fluorescence photoswitches for versatile optical counterfeiting applications.

Tuning the Photochromism of Spiropyran in Functionalized Nanoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Dynamic Anticounterfeiting Applications

Here, we report a novel invisible ink with different decay times based on thin films with different molar ratios of spiropyran (SP)/Si, which allows the encryption of messages over time. Nanoporous silica has been found to be an excellent substrate to improve the solid photochromism of spiropyran, but the hydroxyl groups of silica have a serious effect on fade speeds. The density of silanol groups in silica has an influence on the switching behavior of spiropyran molecules, as they stabilize the amphiphilic merocyanine isomers and thus slow down the fading process from the open to the closed form. Here, we investigate the solid photochromic behavior of spiropyran by sol-gel modification of the silanol groups and explore its potential application in UV printing and dynamic anticounterfeiting. To extend its applications, spiropyran is embedded in organically modified thin films prepared by the sol-gel method. Notably, by using the different decay times of thin films with different SP/Si molar ratios, time-dependent information encryption can be realized. It provides an initial "false" code, which does not display the required information, and only after a given time will the encrypted data appear.

Recent Progress in Photoresponsive Biomaterials

Photoresponsive biomaterials have garnered increasing attention recently due to their ability to dynamically regulate biological interactions and cellular behaviors in response to light. This review provides an overview of recent advances in the design, synthesis, and applications of photoresponsive biomaterials, including photochromic molecules, photocleavable linkers, and photoreactive polymers. We highlight the various approaches used to control the photoresponsive behavior of these materials, including modulation of light intensity, wavelength, and duration. Additionally, we discuss the applications of photoresponsive biomaterials in various fields, including drug delivery, tissue engineering, biosensing, and optical storage. A selection of significant cutting-edge articles collected in recent years has been discussed based on the structural pattern and light-responsive performance, focusing mainly on the photoactivity of azobenzene, hydrazone, diarylethenes, and spiropyrans, and the design of smart materials as the most targeted and desirable application. Overall, this review highlights the potential of photoresponsive biomaterials to enable spatiotemporal control of biological processes and opens up exciting opportunities for developing advanced biomaterials with enhanced functionality.

Stacking Lanthanide-MOF Thin Films to Yield Highly Sensitive Optical Thermometers

Easy-to-integrate, remote read-out thermometers with fast response are of huge interest in numerous application fields. In the context of optical read-out devices, sensors based on the emission of lanthanides (Eu(III), Tb(III)) are particularly promising. Here, by using a layer-by-layer (LbL) approach in the liquid-phase epitaxy process, a series of continuous, low-thickness lanthanide-MIL-103 SURMOFs were fabricated to yield highly sensitive thermometers with optical readout. These Ln-SURMOFs exhibit remarkable temperature-sensing photoluminescence behavior, which can be read out using the naked eye. High transmittance is realized as well by precisely controlling the film thickness and the quality of these Ln-SURMOF thermometers. Moreover, we demonstrate that the thermal sensitivity can be improved in the temperature regime above 120 K, by controlling the energy transfer between Tb(III) and Eu(III). This performance is achieved by employing a sophisticated supramolecular architecture, namely MOF-on-MOF heteroepitaxy.

A 3D multistage information encryption platform with self-erasure function based on a synergistically shape-deformable and AIE fluorescence-tunable hydrogel

The traditional stored information is statically shown on single 2D planes, which leads to low information storage capacity and secondary information leakage without the proper handling of decrypted information. Developing a 3D multistage information encryption platform with self-erasure function is highly desirable. Here, a novel bilayer hydrogel with synergistic deformation and fluorescence color (SDFC) change is designed for 3D multistage information encryption. The bilayer hydrogel consisting of a shape-deformable hydrogel layer and a fluorescence hydrogel layer with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties can exhibit pH-responsive SDFC change. Fluorescence information can be ionoprinted on the fluorescent hydrogel layer based on electrostatic interactions and dynamic covalent bonds. The 2D bilayer hydrogel encoded with information can synergistically produce predesigned 3D shape configuration and enhanced background fluorescence to wrap information, which is only readable after sequential shape recovery with the disappearance of background fluorescence. Furthermore, multistage information can be further obtained by stepwise decryption due to information with differential fluorescence fading rates. The displayed information is automatically self-erased in the end, avoiding the information secondary leakage. This study paves an avenue for broadening conventional 2D single-level information encryption platforms to 3D multistage counterparts with self-erasure and multi-decryption capabilities based on SDFC change of the bilayer hydrogel.

Molecular Cage with Dual Outputs of Photochromism and Luminescence Both in Solution and the Solid State

The rational design of stimuli-responsive materials requires a deep understanding of the structure-activity relationship. Herein, we proposed an intramolecular conformation-locking strategy─incorporating flexible tetraphenylethylene (TPE) luminogens into the rigid scaffold of a molecular cage─to produce a molecular photoswitch with dual outputs of luminescence and photochromism in solution and in the solid states at once. The molecular cage scaffold, which restricts the intramolecular rotations of the TPE moiety, not only helps to preserve the luminescence of TPE in a dilute solution but facilitates the reversible photochromism on account of the intramolecular cyclization/cycloreversion reactions. Furthermore, we demonstrate assorted applications of this multiresponsive molecular cage, e.g., photo-switchable patterning, anticounterfeiting, and selective vapochromism sensing.

A rapid self-healing glassy polymer/metal-organic-framework hybrid membrane at room temperature

The development of repairable MOF-polymer hybrid materials will greatly extend their service life by repairing fractured parts on the spot; however, it is difficult for robust glassy polymers to self-heal below the glass transition temperature (T_g) as the polymer network is frozen. We herein report glassy polyMOF-RHP hybrid membranes by integrating lanthanide polyMOF (polyLnMOF) with randomly hyperbranched polymers (RHP) bearing a high density of hydrogen bonds. Since crystalline lanthanide MOFs act as multiconnected cross-linking agents and cross-link the interpenetrating polymer network, the obtained polyLnMOF-polymer membrane shows enhanced mechanical strength with a storage modulus of 3.09 GPa and a T_g up to 49 °C. Meanwhile, the high intersegment migration ability of the polyLnMOF-polymer network facilitates the exchange of hydrogen-bonded pairs even in the glassy state, leading to an instantaneous room-temperature self-healing ability. The polyLnMOF-polymer membranes inherit the ratiometric temperature-sensing behavior of pristine lanthanide MOFs, resulting in more processable temperature-sensing membranes. This work provides an appealing strategy for the design of mechanically robust, yet self-healing, MOF-polymer functional materials.

Tunable Photochromism of Spirooxazine in the Solid State: A New Design Strategy Based on the Hypochromic Effect

As an important organic photofunctional material, spirooxazine (SO) usually does not exhibit photochromism in the solid state since the intermolecular π-π stacking impedes photoisomerization. Developing photochromic SO in the solid state is crucial for practical applications but is still full of challenges. Here, a series of spirooxazine derivatives (SO1-SO4) with bulky aromatic substituents at the 4- and 7-positions of the skeleton, which provide them with a large volume with which to undergo solid-state photochromism under mild conditions, is designed and synthesized. All the compounds SO1-SO4 exhibit tunable solid photochromism without ground colors, excellent fatigue resistance, and high thermal stability. Notably, it takes only 15 s for SO4 to reach the saturation of absorption intensity, thought to represent the fastest solid-state photoresponse of spirooxazines. X-ray crystal structures of the intermediate compound SO0 and the products SO1-SO2 as well as computational studies suggest that the bulky aromatic groups can lead to a hypochromic effect, allowing for the photochromism of SO in the solid state. The ideal photochromic properties of these spirooxazines open a new avenue for their applications in UV printing, quick response code, and related fields.

Orthogonal luminescence lifetime encoding by intermetallic energy transfer in heterometallic rare-earth MOFs

Lifetime-encoded materials are particularly attractive as optical tags, however examples are rare and hindered in practical application by complex interrogation methods. Here, we demonstrate a design strategy towards multiplexed, lifetime-encoded tags via engineering intermetallic energy transfer in a family of heterometallic rare-earth metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The MOFs are derived from a combination of a high-energy donor (Eu), a low-energy acceptor (Yb) and an optically inactive ion (Gd) with the 1,2,4,5 tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) benzene (TCPB) organic linker. Precise manipulation of the luminescence decay dynamics over a wide microsecond regime is achieved via control over metal distribution in these systems. Demonstration of this platform's relevance as a tag is attained via a dynamic double encoding method that uses the braille alphabet, and by incorporation into photocurable inks patterned on glass and interrogated via digital high-speed imaging. This study reveals true orthogonality in encoding using independently variable lifetime and composition, and highlights the utility of this design strategy, combining facile synthesis and interrogation with complex optical properties.

Mechanical tough and multicolor aggregation-induced emissive polymeric hydrogels for fluorescent patterning

Aggregation-induced emissive fluorogens (AIEgens) are promising building blocks for fluorescent polymeric hydrogels (FPHs) because intense fluorescence intensities are usually guaranteed by spontaneous aggregates of hydrophobic AIEgens in a hydrophilic polymer network. However, most AIE-active FPHs are single-color fluorescent and cannot display tunable emission colors. Additionally, efforts to produce mechanically strong AIE-active hydrogels have been largely ignored, restricting their potential uses. Herein, we present the synthesis of an AIE-active methyl picolinate-substituted 1,8-naphthalimide monomer (MP-NI) for fabricating mechanical tough and multicolor FPHs. Owing to the introduction of bulky and coordinative methyl picolinate group, these specially designed MP-NI molecules were forced to adopt propeller-shaped conformation that renders them with intense aggregation-induced blue emission. Moreover, the MP-NI moieties grafted in a hydrogel matrix can sensitize red and green fluorescence of Eu³⁺and Tb³⁺ via antenna effect. Consequently, multicolor fluorescent hydrogels that sustain a high stress of 1 MPa were obtained by chemically introducing MP-NI moieties into dually cross-linked alginate polymer networks with high-density metal (Ca²⁺/Tb³⁺/Eu³⁺) coordination and hydrogen bonding crosslinks. Their capacity to enable the writing of arbitrary multicolor fluorescent patterns using Eu³⁺/Tb³⁺ as inks were finally demonstrated, suggesting their potential uses for smart display and information encryption.

Metal-Photoswitch Friendship: From Photochromic Complexes to Functional Materials

Cooperative metal-photoswitch interfaces comprise an application-driven field which is based on strategic coupling of metal cations and organic photochromic molecules to advance the behavior of both components, resulting in dynamic molecular and material properties controlled through external stimuli. In this Perspective, we highlight the ways in which metal-photoswitch interplay can be utilized as a tool to modulate a system's physicochemical properties and performance in a variety of structural motifs, including discrete molecular complexes or cages, as well as periodic structures such as metal-organic frameworks. This Perspective starts with photochromic molecular complexes as the smallest subunit in which metal-photoswitch interactions can occur, and progresses toward functional materials. In particular, we explore the role of the metal-photoswitch relationship for gaining fundamental knowledge of switchable electronic and magnetic properties, as well as in the design of stimuli-responsive sensors, optically gated memory devices, catalysts, and photodynamic therapeutic agents. The abundance of stimuli-responsive systems in the natural world only foreshadows the creative directions that will uncover the full potential of metal-photoswitch interactions in the coming years.

A sensitive ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on carbon dots and CdTe quantum dots for visual detection of biogenic amines in food samples

A novel dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent sensor for biogenic amines (BAs) was prepared by simple mixing blue fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) and yellow fluorescent CdTe quantum dots (CdTe QDs). Based on different sensitive properties of pH, CdTe QDs and CDs were used as the response signal and internal reference signal, respectively. The developed ratiometric fluorescent sensor achieved quantitative analysis of eight kinds of BAs with rapid response (30 s) and low limits of detection (1.259-5.428 μM). Furthermore, color-tunable fluorescent test strips were constructed by easily assembling CDs and CdTe QDs onto filter paper. The obtained smart label showed a distinguishable fluorescent color variation from blue to green during the corruption of shrimp samples. The smart label with advantages of convenience and rapidness provided a method for visually monitoring the freshness of food samples.

Electrical bistability based on metal-organic frameworks

Electrical bistability existing in biochemical networks is critical for the proper functionalization of living systems. The development of artificial materials with electrical bistability begun to attract much interest due to their broad application prospects, especially in the field of memristors. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have advantages in regular pores, crystallinity, structural designability and easy functionalization, which can promote the construction of novel MOF-based memristors and facilitate a better understanding of switching mechanisms. Here, we highlight recent advances in electrically bistable MOFs as memristors, and discuss their switching mechanisms, including interfacial reaction, proton-transfer mechanism, metal ion migration, charge trapping/detrapping and other mechanisms. Challenges and future perspectives are also presented.
