Effect of Temperature on the Nucleation and Growth of Precious Metal Nanocrystals

A review on green approaches utilizing phytochemicals in the synthesis of vanadium nano particles and their applications

In the modern era, inorganic nanoparticles have received profound attention as they possess boundless applications in various fields. Among these, vanadium-based nanoparticles (VNPs) are highly remarkable due to their inherent physiological and biological properties with many therapeutic and other applications, such as drug delivery systems for diseases like cancer, environmental remediation, energy storage, energy conversion, and photocatalysis. Moreover, physically, and chemically synthesized VNPs are very versatile, however, these synthesis routes cause concern to health and the environment due to the highly savage reaction conditions, using highly toxic and harsh chemicals, which compel the researchers to develop an eco-friendly, greener, and sustainable route for synthesis. In this outlook, to avoid the innumerable limitations, a bio approach is used over chemical and physical methods. This present review emphasis on the role of various biological components in the synthesis, especially Phyto-molecules that acts as capping and reducing agent, and solvent system for the nanoparticles synthesis. Furthermore, the influence of various factors on the biogenic synthesized nanoparticles has also been discussed. Finally, potential applications of as-synthesized VNPs, principally as an antimicrobial agent and their role as a nanomedicine, energy applications as a supercapacitor, and photocatalytic agents, have been discussed.

Kinetically Controlled Nucleation Enabled by Tunable Microfluidic Mixing for the Synthesis of Dendritic Au@Pt Core/Shell Nanomaterials

The nucleation stage plays a decisive role in determining nanocrystal morphology and properties; hence, the ability to regulate nucleation is critical for achieving high-level control. Herein, glass microfluidic chips with S-shaped mixing units are designed for the synthesis of Au@Pt core/shell materials. The use of hydrodynamics to tune the nucleation kinetics is explored by varying the number of mixing units. Dendritic Au@Pt core/shell nanomaterials are controllably synthesized and a formation mechanism is proposed. As-synthesized Au@Pt exhibited excellent ethanol oxidation activity under alkaline conditions (8.4 times that of commercial Pt/C). This approach is also successfully applied to the synthesize of Au@Pd core/shell nanomaterials, thus demonstrating its generality.

Osmium and OsO x nanoparticles: an overview of syntheses and applications

Precious metal nanoparticles are key for a range of applications ranging from catalysis and sensing to medicine. While gold (Au), silver (Ag), platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd) or ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles have been widely studied, other precious metals are less investigated. Osmium (Os) is one of the least studied of the precious metals. However, Os nanoparticles are interesting materials since they present unique features compared to other precious metals and Os nanomaterials have been reported to be useful for a range of applications, catalysis or sensing for instance. With the increasing availability of advanced characterization techniques, investigating the properties of relatively small Os nanoparticles and clusters has become easier and it can be expected that our knowledge on Os nanomaterials will increase in the coming years. This review aims to give an overview on Os and Os oxide materials syntheses and applications.

Anticancer water-soluble organoruthenium complexes: synthesis and preclinical evaluation

The synthesis, characterisation, and evaluation of the in vitro cytotoxicity of five maleonitriledithiolate‐based ruthenium metal complexes bearing various phosphine ligands towards two ovarian cancer cell lines (A2780 and A2780cisR), one non‐small‐cell lung cancer cell line (H460) and one normal prostate cell line (PNT2) are presented herein. These 18‐electron complexes were designed with four water‐soluble phosphine ligands to increase the water‐solubility character of the corresponding electron‐deficient ruthenium complex which showed great in vitro promises, and triphenylphosphine for comparison. The complexes with triphenylphosphine‐3,3′,3′′‐trisulfonic acid and triphenylphosphine present similar cytotoxicity compared to the 16‐electron precursor, with equal cytotoxicity to both A2780 and A2780cisR. Hints at the mechanism of action suggest an apoptotic pathway based on reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. No toxicity was observed in preliminary in vivo pilot studies for these two complexes in subcutaneous A2780 and A2780cisR xenograft models, with some evidence of tumour growth delay.

Nucleation rate in the two dimensional Ising model in the presence of random impurities

Nucleation phenomena are ubiquitous in nature and the presence of impurities in every real and experimental system is unavoidable. Yet numerical studies of nucleation are nearly always conducted for entirely pure systems. We have studied the behaviour of the droplet free energy in two dimensional Ising model in the presence of randomly positioned static and dynamic impurities. We have shown that both the free energy barrier height and critical nucleus size monotonically decreases with increasing the impurity density for the static case. We have compared the nucleation rates obtained from the Classical Nucleation Theory and the Forward Flux Sampling method for different densities of the static impurities. The results show good agreement. In the case of dynamic impurities, we observe preferential occupancy of the impurities at the boundary positions of the nucleus when the temperature is low. This further boosts enhancement of the nucleation rate due to lowering of the effective interfacial free energy.

Structure-dependent electrochemical properties of cobalt (II) carbonate hydroxide nanocrystals in supercapacitors

In this work, we report the structure-dependent electrochemical performance of cobalt carbonate hydroxide (Co₂(OH)₂CO₃) nanocrystals by experimental investigation and theoretical simulation. Different Co₂(OH)₂CO₃ nanostructures including two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets (NSs) and one-dimensional (1D) nanowires (NWs), were synthesized on self-supported carbon cloth substrates by a facile hydrothermal method. Compared to 1D NWs, 2D Co₂(OH)₂CO₃ NSs provided a short ion transfer path, and low electron transfer resistance during the electrochemical reaction. At the current density of 2 mA cm^-2, 2D Co₂(OH)₂CO₃ NSs exhibited a higher area capacitance of 2.15F cm^-2 and better cycling performance (96.2% retention after 10,000 cycles) than that of 1D NWs (1.15F cm^-2 and 90.1% retention). First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the band gap of the (120) facet in 2D NSs was 0.2 eV, far less than of the (200) facet in 1D NWs (1.04 eV). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements further indicated that the electron transfer and reaction kinetics were more efficient in 2D NSs. This work can provide an important insight in understanding the mechanism of electrochemical energy storage.
