Collective Breathing in an Eightfold Interpenetrated Metal-Organic Framework: From Mechanistic Understanding towards Threshold Sensing Architectures

Reversible Phase Transformations in a Double-Walled Diamondoid Coordination Network with a Stepped Isotherm for Methane

Flexible metal-organic materials (FMOMs) with stepped isotherms can offer enhanced working capacity in storage applications such as adsorbed natural gas (ANG) storage. Unfortunately, whereas >1000 FMOMs are known, only a handful exhibit methane uptake of >150 cm3/cm3 at 65 atm and 298 K, conditions relevant to ANG. Here, we report a double-walled 2-fold interpenetrated diamondoid (dia) network, X-dia-6-Ni, [Ni2L4(μ-H2O)]n, comprising a new azo linker ligand, L- (L- = (E)-3-(pyridin-4-yldiazenyl)benzoate) and 8-connected dinuclear molecular building blocks. X-dia-6-Ni exhibited gas (CO2, N2, CH4) and liquid (C8 hydrocarbons)-induced reversible transformations between its activated narrow-pore β phase and γ, a large-pore phase with ca. 33% increase in unit cell volume. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) studies of the as-synthesized phase α, β, and γ revealed that structural transformations were enabled by twisting of the azo moiety and/or deformation of the MBB. Further insight into these transformations was gained from variable temperature powder XRD and in situ variable pressure powder XRD. Low-temperature N2 and CO2 sorption revealed stepped Type F-II isotherms with saturation uptakes of 422 and 401 cm3/g, respectively. X-dia-6-Ni exhibited uptake of 200 cm3/cm3 (65 atm, 298 K) and a high CH4 working capacity of 166 cm3/cm3 (5-65 bar, 298 K, 33 cycles), the third highest value yet reported for an FMOM and the highest value for an FMOM with a Type F-II isotherm.

Chemoselectivity Inversion of Responsive Metal-Organic Frameworks by Particle Size Tuning in the Micrometer Regime

Gated adsorption is one of the unique physical properties of flexible metal-organic frameworks with high application potential in selective adsorption and sensing of molecules. Despite recent studies that have provided some guidelines in understanding and designing structural flexibility for controlling gate opening by chemical modification of the secondary building units, currently, there is no established strategy to design a flexible MOF showing selective gated adsorption for a specific guest molecule. In a present contribution it is demonstrated for the first time, that the selectivity in the gate opening of a particular compound can be tuned, changed, and even reversed using particle size engineering DUT-8(Zn) ([Zn2(2,6-ndc)2(dabco)]n, 2,6-ndc = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate, dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo-[2.2.2]-octane, DUT = Dresden University of Technology) experiences phase transition from open (op) to closed (cp) pore phase upon removal of solvent from the pores. Microcrystals show selective reopening in the presence of dichloromethane (DCM) over alcohols. Crystal downsizing to micron size unexpectedly reverses the gate opening selectivity, causing DUT-8(Zn) to open its nanosized pores for alcohols but suppressing the responsivity toward DCM.

Co-Adsorption of Alcohols and Water in JUK-8 Studied Using Quasi-Equilibrated Thermodesorption

JUK-8 ([Zn(oba)(pip)]n, oba2- = 4,4'-oxybis(benzenedicarboxylate), pip = 4-pyridyl-functionalized benzene-1,3-dicarbohydrazide) is a hydrolytically stable flexible metal-organic framework. Owing to its unusual adsorptive properties, JUK-8 can be considered as a promising sensing material for construction of detectors of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air. Quasi-equilibrated temperature-programmed desorption and adsorption (QE-TPDA) is a versatile method dedicated to characterization of porous materials. In this work, QE-TPDA was employed to study co-adsorption of water and selected alcohols in JUK-8. For the first time an infrared detector sensitive to organic compounds was used in the QE-TPDA measurements, allowing the study of the influence of water vapor on sorption of VOCs. The QE-TPDA profiles of the studied alcohols, exhibiting two desorption maxima and two adsorption minima, are consistent with the standard sorption isotherms, revealing a two-step adsorption-desorption mechanism. The profiles recorded in the presence of water are noticeably changed in different ways for different alcohols. While at low relative humidity (RH) (ca. 20%) the low temperature adsorption states of ethanol and 1-propanol were only slightly destabilized, for 2-propanol almost complete suppression of adsorption was observed. The results found for moderate RH levels (ca. 50%) indicated that the opening of the JUK-8 structure, responsible for its breathing behavior, was followed by the filling of the just generated pores with a water-alcohol mixture.

Recent Advances in Nanostructured Materials for Application as Gas Sensors

Many different industries, including the pharmaceutical, medical engineering, clinical diagnostic, public safety, and food monitoring industries, use gas sensors. The inherent qualities of nanomaterials, such as their capacity to chemically or physically adsorb gas, and their great ratio of surface to volume make them excellent candidates for use in gas sensing technology. Additionally, the nanomaterial-based gas sensors have excellent selectivity, reproducibility, durability, and cost-effectiveness. This Review article offers a summary of the research on gas sensor devices based on nanomaterials of various sizes. The numerous nanomaterial-based gas sensors, their manufacturing procedures and sensing mechanisms, and most recent advancements are all covered in detail. In addition, evaluations and comparisons of the key characteristics of gas sensing systems made from various dimensional nanomaterials were done.

Isoreticular Chemistry and Applications of Supramolecularly Assembled Copper-Adenine Porous Materials

The useful concepts of reticular chemistry, rigid and predictable metal nodes together with strong and manageable covalent interactions between metal centers and organic linkers, have made the so-called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) a flourishing area of enormous applicability. In this work, the extension of similar strategies to supramolecularly assembled metal-organic materials has allowed us to obtain a family of isoreticular compounds of the general formula [Cu7(μ-adeninato-κN3:κN9)6(μ3-OH)6(μ-OH2)6](OOC-R-COO)·nH2O (R: ethylene-, acetylene-, naphthalene-, or biphenyl-group) in which the rigid copper-adeninato entities and the organic dicarboxylate anions are held together not by covalent interactions but by a robust and flexible network of synergic hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking interactions based on well-known supramolecular synthons (SMOFs). All compounds are isoreticular, highly insoluble, and water-stable and show a porous crystalline structure with a pcu topology containing a two-dimensional (2D) network of channels, whose dimensions and degree of porosity of the supramolecular network are tailored by the length of the dicarboxylate anion. The partial loss of the crystallization water molecules upon removal from the mother liquor produces a shrinkage of the unit cell and porosity, which leads to a color change of the compounds (from blue to olive green) if complete dehydration is achieved by means of gentle heating or vacuuming. However, the supramolecular network of noncovalent interactions is robust and flexible enough to reverse to the expanded unit cell and color after exposure to a humid atmosphere. This humidity-driven breathing behavior has been used to design a sensor in which the electrical resistance varies reversibly with the degree of humidity, very similar to the water vapor adsorption isotherm of the SMOF. The in-solution adsorption properties were explored for the uptake and release of the widely employed 5-fluorouracil, 4-aminosalycilic acid, 5-aminosalycilic acid, and allopurinol drugs. In addition, cytotoxicity activity assays were completed for the pristine and 5-fluorouracil-loaded samples.

The Effect of Pendent Groups upon Flexibility in Coordination Networks with Square Lattice Topology

Gas or vapor-induced phase transformations in flexible coordination networks (CNs) offer the potential to exceed the performance of their rigid counterparts for separation and storage applications. However, whereas ligand modification has been used to alter the properties of such stimulus-responsive materials, they remain understudied compared with their rigid counterparts. Here, we report that a family of Zn2+ CNs with square lattice (sql) topology, differing only through the substituents attached to a linker, exhibit variable flexibility. Structural and CO2 sorption studies on the sql networks, [Zn(5-Ria)(bphy)]n, ia = isophthalic acid, bphy = 1,2-bis(pyridin-4-yl)hydrazine, R = -CH3, -OCH3, -C(CH3)3, -N=N-Ph, and -N=N-Ph(CH3)2, 2-6, respectively, revealed that the substituent moieties influenced both structural and gas sorption properties. Whereas 2-3 exhibited rigidity, 4, 5, and 6 exhibited reversible transformation from small pore to large pore phases. Overall, the insight into the profound effect of pendent moieties of linkers upon phase transformations in this family of layered CNs should be transferable to other CN classes.

Control over Phase Transformations in a Family of Flexible Double Diamondoid Coordination Networks through Linker Ligand Substitution

In this work, we present the first metal-organic framework (MOF) platform with a self-penetrated double diamondoid (ddi) topology that exhibits switching between closed (nonporous) and open (porous) phases induced by exposure to gases. A crystal engineering strategy, linker ligand substitution, was used to control gas sorption properties for CO₂ and C3 gases. Specifically, bimbz (1,4-bis(imidazol-1-yl)benzene) in the coordination network X-ddi-1-Ni ([Ni₂(bimbz)₂(bdc)₂(H₂O)]_n, H₂bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid) was replaced by bimpz (3,6-bis(imidazol-1-yl)pyridazine) in X-ddi-2-Ni ([Ni₂(bimpz)₂(bdc)₂(H₂O)]_n). In addition, the 1:1 mixed crystal X-ddi-1,2-Ni ([Ni₂(bimbz)(bimpz)(bdc)₂(H₂O)]_n) was prepared and studied. All three variants form isostructural closed (β) phases upon activation which each exhibited different reversible properties upon exposure to CO₂ at 195 K and C3 gases at 273 K. For CO₂, X-ddi-1-Ni revealed incomplete gate-opening, X-ddi-2-Ni exhibited a stepped isotherm with saturation uptake of 3.92 mol·mol^-1, and X-ddi-1,2-Ni achieved up to 62% more gas uptake and a distinct isotherm shape vs the parent materials. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and in situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) experiments provided insight into the mechanisms of phase transformation and revealed that the β phases are nonporous with unit cell volumes 39.9, 40.8, and 41.0% lower than the corresponding as-synthesized α phases, X-ddi-1-Ni-α, X-ddi-2-Ni-α, and X-ddi-1,2-Ni-α, respectively. The results presented herein represent the first report of reversible switching between closed and open phases in ddi topology coordination networks and further highlight how ligand substitution can profoundly impact the gas sorption properties of switching sorbents.

Water vapour and gas induced phase transformations in an 8-fold interpenetrated diamondoid metal-organic framework

In this work, we report the synthesis, structural characterisation and sorption properties of an 8-fold interpenetrated diamondoid (dia) metal-organic framework (MOF) that is sustained by a new extended linker ligand, [Cd(Imibz)₂], X-dia-2-Cd, HImibz or 2 = 4-((4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenylimino)methyl)benzoic acid. X-dia-2-Cd was found to exhibit reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformations between four distinct phases: an as-synthesised (from N,N-dimethylformamide) wide-pore phase, X-dia-2-Cd-α; a narrow-pore phase, X-dia-2-Cd-β, formed upon exposure to water; a narrow-pore phase obtained by activation, X-dia-2-Cd-γ; a medium-pore CO₂-loaded phase X-dia-2-Cd-δ. While the space group remained constant in the four phases, the cell volumes and calculated void space ranged from 4988.7 ų and 47% (X-dia-2-Cd-α), respectively, to 3200.8 ų and 9.1% (X-dia-2-Cd-γ), respectively. X-dia-2-Cd-γ also exhibited a water vapour-induced structural transformation to the water-loaded X-dia-2-Cd-β phase, resulting in an S-shaped sorption isotherm. The inflection point occurred at 18% RH with negligible hysteresis on the desorption profile. Water vapour temperature-humidity swing cycling (60% RH, 300 K to 0% RH, 333 K) indicated hydrolytic stability of X-dia-2-Cd and working capacity was retained after 128 cycles of sorbent regeneration. CO₂ (at 195 K) was also observed to induce a structural transformation in X-dia-2-Cd-γ and in situ PXRD studies at 1 bar of CO₂, 195 K revealed the formation of X-dia-2-Cd-δ, which exhibited 31% larger unit cell volume than X-dia-2-Cd-γ.

Shape-Memory Effect Triggered by π-π Interactions in a Flexible Terpyridine Metal-Organic Framework

Shape-memory polymers and alloys are adaptable materials capable of reversing from a deformed, metastable phase to an energetically favored original phase in response to external stimuli. In the context of metal-organic frameworks, the term shape-memory is defined as the property of a switchable framework to stabilize the reopened pore phase after the first switching transition. Herein we describe a novel flexible terpyridine MOF which, upon desolvation, transforms into a nonporous structure that reopens into a shape-memory phase when exposed to CO₂ at 195 K. Based on comprehensive in situ experimental studies (SC-XRD and PXRD) and DFT energetic considerations combined with literature reports, we recommend dividing shape-memory MOFs into two categories, viz responsive and nonresponsive, depending on the transformability of the gas-free reopened pore phase into the collapsed phase. Furthermore, considering the methodological gap in discovering and understanding shape-memory porous materials, we emphasize the importance of multicycle physisorption experiments for dynamic open framework materials, including metal-organic and covalent organic frameworks.

A Logic Gate Based on a Flexible Metal-Organic Framework (JUK-8) for the Concomitant Detection of Hydrogen and Oxygen

We present an autonomous, chemical logic gate based on a switchable metal-organic framework (MOF) composite, containing carbon nanoparticles and a Pt catalyst. The switchable MOF composite performs as AND logic gate. Hydrogen and oxygen gas streams serve as binary inputs. Catalytically formed water induces a structural transition (crystal volume expansion) of the MOF, and as a consequence, a detectable drop in conductance of the composite as a 'true' output only if both gases come in contact with the composite.

Solid-state NMR studies of metal ion and solvent influences upon the flexible metal-organic framework DUT-8

Within the present contribution, we describe solid-state NMR spectroscopic studies of the paddle wheel unit in the prototypic flexible MOF compound DUT-8(M) (M = Ni, Co, Zn). The ¹³C NMR chemical shift of these carboxylates shows a remarkable behavior. The pure 2,6-H₂ndc linker carboxylates as well as DUT-8(Zn) exhibit a¹³C chemical shift of only about 170 ppm. In contrast, much higher values are observed for DUT-8(Ni) and especially DUT-8(Co). In the open pore state, the shift strongly depends on the solvent polarity in these two latter cases. The present contribution elucidates the reason for this solvent influence. It is concluded that the solvent mainly modifies the isotropic Fermi contact coupling constant for the excited high-spin states in DUT-8(Ni) and DUT-8(Co).

Novel Aggregation-Enhanced PEC Photosensitizer Based on Electrostatic Linkage of Ionic Liquid with Protoporphyrin IX for Ultrasensitive Detection of Molt-4 Cells

Nowadays, aggregation quenching of most organic photosensitizers in aqueous media seriously restricts analytical and biomedical applications of photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors. In this work, an aggregation-enhanced PEC photosensitizer was prepared by electrostatically bonding protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) with an ionic liquid of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole tetrafluoroborate ([BMIm][BF₄]), termed as PPIX-[BMIm] for clarity. The resultant PPIX-[BMIm] showed weak photocurrent in pure dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, good solvent), while the PEC signals displayed a 44.1-fold enhancement in a water (poor solvent)/DMSO binary solvent with a water fraction (f_w) of 90%. Such PEC-enhanced mechanism was critically studied by electrochemistry and density functional theory (DFT) calculation in some detail. Afterward, a label-free PEC cytosensor was built for ultrasensitive bioassay of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (molt-4) cells by electrodepositing Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) on the PPIX-[BMIm] aggregates and sequential assembly of protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) aptamer DNA (aptDNA). The resultant cytosensor showed a wide linear range (300 to 3 × 10⁵ cells mL^-1) with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 63 cells mL^-1. The aggregation-enhanced PEC performance offers a valuable and practical pathway for synthesis of advanced organic photosensitizer to explore its PEC applications in early diagnosis of tumors.

Design of a MOF based on octa-nuclear zinc clusters realizing both thermal stability and structural flexibility

An octa-nuclear zinc (Zn₈) cluster-based two-fold interpenetrated metal-organic framework (MOF) of [(CH₃)₂NH₂]₂[Zn₈O₃(FDC)₆]·7DMF (denoted as Zn8-as; H₂FDC = 9H-fluorene-2,7-dicarboxylic acid; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) was synthesized by the reaction of a hard base of a curved dicarboxylate ligand (H₂FDC) with the borderline acid of Zn(II) under solvothermal conditions. Zn8-as shows significant crystal volume shrinkage upon heating, yielding a solvate-free framework of [(CH₃)₂NH₂]₂[Zn₈O₃(FDC)₆] (Zn8-de). Zn8-de displays gated adsorption for C₂H₂ and type-I adsorption for CO₂, attributed to the framework flexibility and the different interactions between the gas molecules and the host framework.

Inhibitory Potential of New Phenolic Hydrazide-Hydrazones with a Decoy Substrate Fragment towards Laccase from a Phytopathogenic Fungus: SAR and Molecular Docking Studies

Laccase from pathogenic fungi participates in both the delignification and neutralization of phytoantibiotics. Furthermore, it interferes with the hormone signaling in plants and catalyzes melanization. Infections of these pathogens contribute to loss in forestry, agriculture, and horticulture. As there is still a need to expand knowledge on efficient defense strategies against phytopathogenic fungi, the present study aimed to reveal more information on the molecular mechanisms of laccase inhibition with natural and natural-like carboxylic acid semi-synthetic derivatives. A set of hydrazide-hydrazones derived from carboxylic acids, generally including electron-rich arene units that serve as a decoy substrate, was synthesized and tested with laccase from Trametes versicolor. The classic synthesis of the title inhibitors proceeded with good to almost quantitative yield. Ninety percent of the tested molecules were active in the range of K_I = 8–233 µM and showed different types of action. Such magnitude of inhibition constants qualified the hydrazide-hydrazones as strong laccase inhibitors. Molecular docking studies supporting the experimental data explained the selected derivatives’ interactions with the enzyme. The results are promising in developing new potential antifungal agents mitigating the damage scale in the plant cultivation, gardening, and horticulture sectors.

Breathing-Assisted Selective Adsorption of C8 Alkyl Aromatics in Zn-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

The breathing phenomenon in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has revealed supramolecular host-guest interactions that could be beneficial for chemical separation in numerous industrial applications. The cost-effective purification of C₈ alkyl aromatics such as o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, and ethylbenzene remains challenging owing to their similar molecular structures, boiling points, kinetic diameters, polarities, etc. Herein, we report two Zn-based pillar-bilayered MOFs, denoted [Zn₂ (aip)₂ (pillar)] (aip=5-aminoisophthalic acid; pillar: bpy=4,4'-bipyridine or bpe=1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) that exhibit a breathing effect depending on the adsorbed guest molecules. Guest-dependent sorption studies in organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide, methanol, benzene, and water vapor display reversible structural flexibility through the breathing effect in both framework compounds. The experiments conducted on C₈ -alkyl aromatics resulting in both MOF compounds can access these isomers in the shrunken pores, and thereby expand the pore size by framework breathing. In C₈ binary mixtures, these Zn-MOFs exhibit selective sorption properties based on the different interactions between guest C₈ aromatics and the framework structure.

Spiers Memorial Lecture: Coordination networks that switch between nonporous and porous structures: an emerging class of soft porous crystals

Coordination networks (CNs) are a class of (usually) crystalline solids typically comprised of metal ions or cluster nodes linked into 2 or 3 dimensions by organic and/or inorganic linker ligands. Whereas CNs tend to exhibit rigid structures and permanent porosity as exemplified by most metal-organic frameworks, MOFs, there exists a small but growing class of CNs that can undergo extreme, reversible structural transformation(s) when exposed to gases, vapours or liquids. These "soft" or "stimuli-responsive" CNs were introduced two decades ago and are attracting increasing attention thanks to two features: the amenability of CNs to design from first principles, thereby enabling crystal engineering of families of related CNs; and the potential utility of soft CNs for adsorptive storage and separation. A small but growing subset of soft CNs exhibit reversible phase transformations between nonporous (closed) and porous (open) structures. These "switching CNs" are distinguished by stepped sorption isotherms coincident with phase transformation and, perhaps counterintuitively, they can exhibit benchmark properties with respect to working capacity (storage) and selectivity (separation). This review addresses fundamental and applied aspects of switching CNs through surveying their sorption properties, analysing the structural transformations that enable switching, discussing structure-function relationships and presenting design principles for crystal engineering of the next generation of switching CNs.

Metal-organic frameworks of linear trinuclear cluster secondary building units: structures and applications

Secondary building units (SBUs) in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are essential from both a structural and performance perspective. While a variety of SBUs, such as paddlewheel CuII2, triangular CrIII3, tetrahedral ZnII4, and octahedral ZrIV6 have been extensively studied, the linear trinuclear SBUs (herein denoted as M₃), though frequently encountered, are rarely discussed as a class. A literature survey reveals that M₃ clusters are ubiquitous in discrete molecular entities as well as in MOFs. Unlike most other cluster types, however, they have an unprecedented metal diversity and ligand tolerance. The single-crystals of some M₃-based MOFs are also sufficiently robust upon guest removal and exchange or multi-step post-modifications to enable catalytic mechanism elucidation. Some of these M₃-based SBUs endow MOFs with stability under demanding conditions necessary, for example, in flue gas separation. Herein we review MOFs sustained by this common but under-appreciated class of SBUs and discuss applications of the resulting MOF motifs.

Large breathing effect induced by water sorption in a remarkably stable nonporous cyanide-bridged coordination polymer

While metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are at the forefront of cutting-edge porous materials, extraordinary sorption properties can also be observed in Prussian Blue Analogs (PBAs) and related materials comprising extremely short bridging ligands. Herein, we present a bimetallic nonporous cyanide-bridged coordination polymer (CP) {[Mn(imH)]2[Mo(CN)8]} n (1Mn; imH = imidazole) that can efficiently and reversibly capture and release water molecules over tens of cycles without any fatigue despite being based on one of the shortest bridging ligands known - the cyanide. The sorption performance of {[Mn(imH)]2[Mo(CN)8]} n matches or even outperforms MOFs that are typically selected for water harvesting applications with perfect sorption reversibility and very low desorption temperatures. Water sorption in 1Mn is possible due to the breathing effect (accompanied by a dramatic cyanide-framework transformation) occurring in three well-defined steps between four different crystal phases studied structurally by X-ray diffraction structural analysis. Moreover, the capture of H2O by 1Mn switches the EPR signal intensity of the MnII centres, which has been demonstrated by in situ EPR measurements and enables monitoring of the hydration level of 1Mn by EPR. The sorption of water in 1Mn controls also its photomagnetic behavior at the cryogenic regime, thanks to the presence of the [MoIV(CN)8]4- photomagnetic chromophore in the structure. These observations demonstrate the extraordinary sorption potential of cyanide-bridged CPs and the possibility to merge it with the unique physical properties of this class of compounds arising from their bimetallic character (e.g. photomagnetism and long-range magnetic ordering).

Combining In Situ Techniques (XRD, IR, and 13C NMR) and Gas Adsorption Measurements Reveals CO2-Induced Structural Transitions and High CO2/CH4 Selectivity for a Flexible Metal-Organic Framework JUK-8

Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials in gas-related technologies. Adjusting the material to processes requires understanding of the flexibility mechanism and its influence on the adsorption properties. Herein, we present the mechanistic understanding of CO₂-induced pore-opening transitions of the water-stable MOF JUK-8 ([Zn(oba)(pip)]_n, oba^2- = 4,4'-oxybis(benzenedicarboxylate), pip = 4-pyridyl-functionalized benzene-1,3-dicarbohydrazide) as well as its potential applicability in gas purification. Detailed insights into the global structural transformation and subtle local MOF-adsorbate interactions are obtained by three in situ techniques (XRD, IR, and ¹³CO₂-NMR). These results are further supported by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis of the solvated and guest-free phases. High selectivity toward carbon dioxide derived from the single-gas adsorption experiments of CO₂ (195 and 298 K), Ar (84 K), O₂ (90 K)_, N₂ (77 K), and CH₄ (298 K) is confirmed by high-pressure coadsorption experiments of the CO₂/CH₄ (75:25 v/v) mixture at different temperatures (288, 293, and 298 K) and in situ NMR studies of the coadsorption of ¹³CO₂/¹³CH₄ (50:50 v/v; 195 K).

Carbon support tuned electrocatalytic activity of a single-site metal-organic framework toward the oxygen reduction reaction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess fantastic features such as structural diversity, tunable accessible pores and atomically dispersed active sites, holding tremendous potential as highly versatile platforms for fabricating single-site catalysts. The electrocatalytic activity of single-site MOFs can be improved and tuned via several approaches; however, the exploitation of different carbon supports to modulate the nature of single active sites in MOFs for electrocatalysis has not been reported. Here, we find that the electrocatalytic activity of single-site MOFs toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) can be tuned by using carbon nanomaterials, i.e., carbon nanotubes and graphene, as supports through MOF-support interactions in the manner of geometric and electronic effects. The introduction of MOF-support interactions not only greatly improves the electrocatalytic performance of MOFs toward the ORR in terms of onset and half-wave potentials and current density, but also alters the reaction pathway of the ORR. This finding provides a new horizon for the design and synthesis of single-site MOFs for electrocatalysis.

Two porous Ni-MOFs based on 2,4,6-tris(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3,5-triazine showing solvent determined structures and distinctive sorption properties toward CO2 and alkanes

By regulating the solvent used for synthesis, two porous Ni-MOFs, namely {[Ni3(BTC)2(TPT)2/3(H2O)4.08(MeOH)0.92]·2DMF·0.5H2O·0.5MeOH}n (1) and {[Ni3(BTC)2(TPT)2(H2O)6]·6DMF}n (2) (H3BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid, TPT = 2,4,6-tris(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3,5-triazine, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide, and MeOH = methanol) were obtained. Compound 1 reveals a rigid 3D framework, while compound 2 shows a flexible 3-fold interpenetrated framework. Compound 1 exhibits a selective adsorption of CO2 due to the sieving effect of the rigid framework containing two types of cages with small apertures. Noteworthily, the flexible compound 2 displays an obviously guest-induced structural transformation. The desolvated compound 2 reveals a much higher capacity toward CO2 and n-C4H10 than those of N2 CH4, C2H6 and C3H8.

Porous flexible frameworks: origins of flexibility and applications

Porous crystalline frameworks including zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have attracted great research interest in recent years. In addition to their assembly in the solid-state being fundamentally interesting and aesthetically pleasing, their potential applications have now pervaded in different areas of chemistry, biology and materials science. When framework materials are endowed with 'flexibility', they exhibit some properties (e.g., stimuli-induced pore breathing and reversible phase transformations) that are distinct from their rigid counterparts. Benefiting from flexibility and porosity, these framework materials have shown promise in applications that include separation of toxic chemicals, isotopes and hydrocarbons, sensing, and targeted delivery of chemicals. While flexibility in MOFs has been widely appreciated, recent developments of COFs and HOFs have established that flexibility is not just limited to MOFs. In fact, zeolites-that are considered rigid when compared with MOFs-are also known to exhibit dynamic modes. Despite flexibility may be conceived as being detrimental to the formation and stability of periodic structures, the landscape of flexible framework structures continues to expand with discovery of new materials with promising applications. In this review, we make an account of different flexible framework materials based on their framework types with a more focus on recent examples and delve into the origin of flexibility in each case. This systematic analysis of different flexibility types based on their origins enables understanding of structure-property relationships, which should help guide future development of flexible framework materials based on appropriate monomer design and tailoring their properties by bottom-up approach. In essence, this review provides a summary of different flexibility types extant to framework materials and critical analysis of importance of flexibility in emerging applications.

Dynamic metal-organic frameworks for the separation of hydrogen isotopes

Reversible structural transformation upon exposure to external stimuli can lead to breathing effect or gate-opening phenomena for dynamic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which endow them with excellent gas separation performance. The separation of hydrogen isotopes remains a huge challenge due to their nearly identical physical and chemical properties. The unique feature of dynamic MOFs, especially structural transition triggered by isotopes or by temperature, maximally enhances kinetic quantum sieving and contributes to the highly selective separation of hydrogen isotopes. Herein, we present some examples for the separation of hydrogen isotopes based on dynamic frameworks, and we expect to attract increasing attention to this research field.

Hierarchical Porous Graphene-Iron Carbide Hybrid Derived From Functionalized Graphene-Based Metal-Organic Gel as Efficient Electrochemical Dopamine Sensor

A metal-organic gel (MOG) similar in constitution to MIL-100 (Fe) but containing a lower connectivity ligand (5-aminoisophthalate) was integrated with an isophthalate functionalized graphene (IG). The IG acted as a structure-directing templating agent, which also induced conductivity of the material. The MOG@IG was pyrolyzed at 600°C to obtain MGH-600, a hybrid of Fe/Fe3C/FeOx enveloped by graphene. MGH-600 shows a hierarchical pore structure, with micropores of 1.1 nm and a mesopore distribution between 2 and 6 nm, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area amounts to 216 m2/g. Furthermore, the MGH-600 composite displays magnetic properties, with bulk saturation magnetization value of 130 emu/g at room temperature. The material coated on glassy carbon electrode can distinguish between molecules with the same oxidation potential, such as dopamine in presence of ascorbic acid and revealed a satisfactory limit of detection and limit of quantification (4.39 × 10-7 and 1.33 × 10-6 M, respectively) for the neurotransmitter dopamine.

Interlinker Hydrogen Bonds Govern CO2 Adsorption in a Series of Flexible 2D Diacylhydrazone/Isophthalate-Based MOFs: Influence of Metal Center, Linker Substituent, and Activation Temperature

Four new layered flexible metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) containing a diacylhydrazone moiety, namely, guest-filled [Zn₂(iso)₂(tdih)₂]_n (1), [Zn₂(NH₂iso)₂(tdih)₂]_n (2), [Cd₂(iso)₂(tdih)₂]_n (3) and [Cd₂(NH₂iso)₂(tdih)₂]_n (4) were synthesized using terephthalaldehyde di-isonicotinoylhydrazone (tdih) as a linear ditopic linker as well as isophtalate (iso) or 5-aminoisophthalate (NH₂iso) as angular colinkers. The MOFs with hexacoordinated cadmium centers feature two-dimensional pore systems as compared to the MOFs with pentacoordinated zinc centers showing either zero-dimensional or mixed zero-/one-dimensional voids, as evidenced by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In contrast to the frameworks based on isophtalates which do not show any significant gas uptakes, introduction of amino-substituted linker enables CO₂ adsorption. Gently activated aminoisophthalate-based frameworks, that is, guest-exchanged in methanol and heated to 100 °C, show reversible gated CO₂ adsorptions at 195 K, whereas the increase of activation temperature to 150 °C or more leads to one-step isotherms and lower adsorption capacities. X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy reveal significant structural differences in interlayer hydrogen bonding upon activation of materials at higher temperatures. The work emphasizes the role of hydrogen bonds in crystal engineering of layered materials and the importance of activation conditions in such systems.

Interplay between a metal center and functionalization of isophthalate linker leads to remarkable diversity of structures and properties in the series of layered flexible metal−organic frameworks. Intriguing adsorption properties include stepwise gated CO₂ adsorptions and strong dependence on activation conditions. The role of hydrogen bonds in crystal engineering of layered materials is underscored by activation−structure−adsorption correlations.
