Freeze-Thaw-Promoted Fabrication of Clean and Hierarchically Structured Noble-Metal Aerogels for Electrocatalysis and Photoelectrocatalysis

Partially oxidized inter-doped RuNi alloy aerogel for the hydrogen evolution reaction in both alkaline and acidic media

A facile reduction and doping process is employed with the supercritical ethanol drying method to form RuNi alloy aerogels. The optimized heterostructure comprising RuNi metal, RuO2, and NiO phases is synthesized through partial oxidation. When applied to the surface of Ni foam, the multiphase aerogels form a morphology of highly porous 0D colloidal aerogel networks on the surface. RuNi alloy-Ni foam oxidized at 350 °C (RuNi-350@NF) has an overpotential of 89 and 61 mV in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4 media at 50 mA cm-2, as well as satisfactory long-term stability. Additionally, the Tafel slopes in alkaline and acidic media are found to be 34 and 30.9 mV dec-1, respectively. Furthermore, it exhibits long-term stability (35 h) in alkaline and acidic media at high current densities of 50 mA cm-2, respectively. This study presents a novel strategy for developing exceptionally efficient and free-standing 3D porous aerogel electrocatalysts with potential applications in hydrogen production.

AuNi bimetallic aerogel with ultra-high stability applied in smart and portable biosensing

Glucose detection is of significant importance in providing information to the human health management. However, conventional enzymatic glucose sensors suffer from a limited long-term stability due to the losing activity of the enzymes. In this work, the AuNi bimetallic aerogel with a well-defined nanowire network is synthesized and applied as the sensing nanomaterial in the non-enzymatic glucose detection. The three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous structure of the AuNi bimetallic aerogel ensures the high sensitivity of the sensor (40.34 μA mM-1 cm-2). Theoretical investigation unveiled the mechanism of the boosting electrocatalytic activity of the AuNi bimetallic aerogel toward glucose. A better adhesion between the sensing nanomaterial and the screen-printing electrodes (SPEs) is obtained after the introduction of Ni. On the basis of a wide linearity in the range of 0.1-5 mM, an excellent selectivity, an outstanding long-term stability (90 days) as well as the help of the signal processing circuit and an M5stack development board, the as-prepared glucose sensor successfully realizes remote monitoring of the glucose concentration. We speculate that this work is favorable to motivating the technological innovations of the non-enzymatic glucose sensors and intelligent sensing devices.

Spin Effect to Regulate the Electronic Structure of Ir─Fe Aerogels for Efficient Acidic Water Oxidation

"Spin" has been recently reported as an important degree of electronic freedom to promote catalysis, yet how it influences electronic structure remains unexplored. This work reports the spin-induced orbital hybridization in Ir─Fe bimetallic aerogels, where the electronic structure of Ir sites is effectively regulated by tuning the spin property of Fe atoms. The spin-optimized electronic structure boosts oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis in acidic media, resulting in a largely improved catalytic performance with an overpotential of as low as 236 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Furthermore, the gelation kinetics for the aerogel synthesis is improved by an order of magnitude based on the introduction of a magnetic field. Density functional theory calculation reveals that the increased magnetic moment of Fe (3d orbital) changes the d-band structure (i.e., the d-band center and bandwidth) of Ir (5d orbital) via orbital hybridization, resulting in optimized binding of reaction intermediates. This strategy builds the bridge between the electron spin theory with the d-band theory and provides a new way for the design of high-performance electrocatalysts by using spin-induced orbital interaction.

Portable visual and electrochemical detection of hydrogen peroxide release from living cells based on dual-functional Pt-Ni hydrogels

It is important to monitor the intra-/extracellular concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in biological processes. However, miniaturized devices that enable portable and accurate H2O2 measurement are still in their infancy because of the difficulty of developing facile sensing strategies and highly integrated sensing devices. In this work, portable H2O2 sensors based on Pt-Ni hydrogels with excellent peroxidase-like and electrocatalytic activities are demonstrated. Thus, simple and sensitive H2O2 sensing is achieved through both colorimetric and electrochemical strategies. The as-fabricated H2O2 sensing chips exhibit favorable performance, with low detection limits (0.030 μM & 0.15 μM), wide linearity ranges (0.10 μM-10.0 mM & 0.50 μM-5.0 mM), outstanding long-term stability (up to 60 days), and excellent selectivity. With the aid of an M5stack development board, portable visual and electrochemical H2O2 sensors are successfully constructed without complicated and expensive equipment or professional operators. When applied to the detection of H2O2 released from HeLa cells, the results obtained by the developed sensors are in good agreement with those from an ultraviolet‒visible spectrophotometer (UV‒vis) (1.97 μM vs. 2.08 μM) and electrochemical station (1.77 μM vs. 1.84 μM).

Dual-Plasmon Resonance Coupling Promoting Directional Photosynthesis of Nitrate from Air

Photocatalysis, particularly plasmon-mediated photocatalysis, offers a green and sustainable approach for direct nitrogen oxidation into nitrate under ambient conditions. However, the unsatisfactory photocatalytic efficiency caused by the limited localized electromagnetic field enhancement and short hot carrier lifetime of traditional plasmonic catalysts is a stumbling block to the large-scale application of plasmon photocatalytic technology. Herein, we design and demonstrate the dual-plasmonic heterojunction (Bi/Csx WO3 ) achieves efficient and selective photocatalytic N2 oxidation. The yield of NO3 - over Bi/Csx WO3 (694.32 μg g-1  h-1 ) are 2.4 times that over Csx WO3 (292.12 μg g-1  h-1 ) under full-spectrum irradiation. The surface dual-plasmon resonance coupling effect generates a surge of localized electromagnetic field intensity to boost the formation efficiency and delay the self-thermalization of energetic hot carriers. Ultimately, electrons participate in the formation of ⋅O2 - , while holes involve in the generation of ⋅OH and the activation of N2 . The synergistic effect of multiple reactive oxygen species drives the direct photosynthesis of NO3 - , which achieves the overall-utilization of photoexcited electrons and holes in photocatalytic reaction. The concept that the dual-plasmon resonance coupling effect facilitates the directional overall-utilization of photoexcited carriers will pave a new way for the rational design of efficient photocatalytic systems.

Leveraging Ligand and Composition Effects: Morphology-Tailorable Pt-Bi Bimetallic Aerogels for Enhanced (Photo-)Electrocatalysis

Metal aerogels (MAs) are emerging porous materials displaying unprecedented potential in catalysis, sensing, plasmonic technologies, etc. However, the lack of efficient regulation of their nano-building blocks (NBBs) remains a big hurdle that hampers the in-depth investigation and performance enhancement. Here, by harmonizing composition and ligand effects, Pt- and Bi-based single- and bimetallic aerogels bearing NBBs of controlled dimensions and shapes are obtained by facilely tuning the metal precursors and the applied ligands. Particularly, by further modulating the electronic and optic properties of the aerogels via adjusting the content of the catalytically active Pt component and the semiconducting Bi component, both the electrocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic performance of the Pt-Bi aerogels can be manipulated. In this light, an impressive catalytic performance for electro-oxidation of methanol is acquired, marking a mass activity of 6.4-fold higher under UV irradiation than that for commercial Pt/C. This study not only sheds light on in situ manipulating NBBs of MAs, but also puts forward guidelines for crafting high-performance MAs-based electrocatalysts and photoelectrocatalysts toward energy-related electrochemical processes.

Bimetallic Pt-Hg Aerogels for Electrocatalytic Upgrading of Ethanol to Acetate

Electrochemical upgrading of ethanol to acetic acid provides a promising strategy to couple with the current hydrogen production from water electrolysis. This work reports the design of a series of bimetallic PtHg aerogels, where the PtHg aerogel exhibits a 10.5-times higher mass activity than that of commercial Pt/C toward ethanol oxidation. More impressively, the PtHg aerogel demonstrates nearly 100% selectivity toward the production of acetic acid. The operando infrared spectroscopic studies and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis verify the preferable C2 pathway mechanism during the reaction. This work opens an avenue for the electrochemical synthesis of acetic acid via ethanol electrolysis.

Size-controllable colloidal Ag nano-aggregates with long-time SERS detection window for on-line high-throughput detection

Making metal nanoparticle aggregates is a common way to improve surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement via the formation of hot spots between nanoparticles. Here, we propose a "freeze-thaw-ultrasonication" method to obtain stable colloidal Ag nano-aggregates (AgNAs) with controllable sizes, which can remain stable for a few days. Compared with other method using aggregation reagents (e.g., organic molecules and salt), this method can maintain metal surface charges and adsorption affinity, which ensures the excellent SERS stability and sensitivity. The SERS detection window during the experiment can reach more than 25 min, which makes it a prerequisite for accurate SERS detection during a long-time range. Combining the obtained stable AgNAs with microfluidic devices, we established a sequential SERS on-line continuous detection method for the high-throughput detection of multiplex samples. The UV-Fenton degradation process of methylene blue (MB) is continuously on-line monitored through this platform, which is more sensitive than the UV-Vis Spectrum. Moreover, we have realized the sensitive and accurate detection of 5-nitro-8-hydroxyquinoline (5-NQ) with antibacterial and anticancer activities based on chloride-functionalized silver, which paved a way for SERS high-throughput analysis in bioanalysis and other fields.

Nanoporous Gold: From Structure Evolution to Functional Properties in Catalysis and Electrochemistry

Nanoporous gold (NPG) is characterized by a bicontinuous network of nanometer-sized metallic struts and interconnected pores formed spontaneously by oxidative dissolution of the less noble element from gold alloys. The resulting material exhibits decent catalytic activity for low-temperature, aerobic total as well as partial oxidation reactions, the oxidative coupling of methanol to methyl formate being the prototypical example. This review not only provides a critical discussion of ways to tune the morphology and composition of this material and its implication for catalysis and electrocatalysis, but will also exemplarily review the current mechanistic understanding of the partial oxidation of methanol using information from quantum chemical studies, model studies on single-crystal surfaces, gas phase catalysis, aerobic liquid phase oxidation, and electrocatalysis. In this respect, a particular focus will be on mechanistic aspects not well understood, yet. Apart from the mechanistic aspects of catalysis, best practice examples with respect to material preparation and characterization will be discussed. These can improve the reproducibility of the materials property such as the catalytic activity and selectivity as well as the scope of reactions being identified as the main challenges for a broader application of NPG in target-oriented organic synthesis.

Engineering Structural Janus MXene-nanofibrils Aerogels for Season-Adaptive Radiative Thermal Regulation

Aerogels have provided a significant platform for passive radiation-enabled thermal regulation, arousing extensive interest due to their capabilities of radiative cooling or heating. However, there still remains challenge of developing functionally integrated aerogels for sustainable thermal regulation in both hot and cold environment. Here, Janus structured MXene-nanofibrils aerogel (JMNA) is rationally designed via a facile and efficient way. The achieved aerogel presents the characteristic of high porosity (≈98.2%), good mechanical strength (tensile stress of ≈2 MPa, compressive stress of ≈115 kPa), and macroscopic shaping property. Based on the asymmetric structure, the JMNA with switchable functional layers can alternatively enable passive radiative heating and cooling in winter and summer, respectively. As a proof of concept, JMNA can function as a switchable thermal-regulated roof to effectively enable the inner house model to maintain >25 °C in winter and <30 °C in hot summer. This design of Janus structured aerogels with compatible and expandable capabilities is promising to widely benefit the low-energy thermal regulation in changeable climate.

Electronic Modulation of the 3D Architectured Ni/Fe Oxyhydroxide Anchored N-Doped Carbon Aerogel with Much Improved OER Activity

It remains a big challenge to develop non-precious metal catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in energy storage and conversion systems. Herein, a facile and cost-effective strategy is employed to in situ prepare the Ni/Fe oxyhydroxide anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon aerogel (NiFeOx(OH)y@NCA) for OER electrocatalysis. The as-prepared electrocatalyst displays a typical aerogel porous structure composed of interconnected nanoparticles with a large BET specific surface area of 231.16 m2·g−1. In addition, the resulting NiFeOx(OH)y@NCA exhibits excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 304 mV at 10 mA·cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 72 mV·dec−1, and excellent stability after 2000 CV cycles, which is superior to the commercial RuO2 catalyst. The much enhanced OER performance is mainly derived from the abundant active sites, the high electrical conductivity of the Ni/Fe oxyhydroxide, and the efficient electronic transfer of the NCA structure. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the introduction of the NCA regulates the surface electronic structure of Ni/Fe oxyhydroxide and increases the binding energy of intermediates as indicated by the d-band center theory. This work provides a new method for the construction of advanced aerogel-based materials for energy conversion and storage.

High-Entropy Alloy Aerogels: A New Platform for Carbon Dioxide Reduction

High-entropy alloy aerogels (HEAAs) combined with the advantages of high-entropy alloys and aerogels are prospective new platforms in catalytic reactions. However, due to the differences in reduction potentials and miscibility behavior of different metals, the realization of HEAAs with a single phase is still a great challenge. Herein, a series of HEAAs is fabricated via the freeze-thaw method as highly active and durable electrocatalysts for the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂ RR). Especially, the PdCuAuAgBiIn HEAAs can achieve Faradaic efficiency (FE) of C1 products almost 100% from -0.7 to -1.1 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (V_RHE ), and a maximum FE for formic acid (FE_HCOOH ) of 98.1% at -1.1 V_RHE , outperforming PdCuAuAgBiIn high-entropy alloy particles (HEAPs) and Pd metallic aerogels (MAs). Specifically, the current density and FE_HCOOH are almost 200 mA cm^-2 and 87% in a flow cell. The impressive CO₂ RR performance of the PdCuAuAgBiIn HEAAs is attributed to the strong interactions between the different metals and the surface unsaturated sites, which can regulate the electronic structures of different metals and allow the optimal HCOO* intermediate adsorption and desorption onto the catalysts surface to enhance HCOOH production. The work not only provides a facile synthetic strategy to fabricate HEAAs, but also opens the avenue for development of efficient catalysts and beyond.

Hyperelastic Kevlar Nanofiber Aerogels as Robust Thermal Switches for Smart Thermal Management

Aerogels, the lightest artificial solid materials characterized by low density and thermal conductivity, high porosity, and large specific surface area, have attracted increasing interest. Aerogels exhibit single-mode thermal insulation properties regardless of the surrounding temperature. In this study, hyperelastic Kevlar nanofiber aerogels (HEKAs) are designed and fabricated by a slow-proton-release-modulating gelation and thermoinduced crosslinking strategy. The method does not use crosslinking agents and endows the ultralow-density (4.7 mg cm^-3 ) HEKAs with low thermal conductivity (0.029 W m^-1 K^-1 ), high porosity (99.75%), high thermal stability (550 °C), and increased compression resilience (80%) and fatigue resistance. Proofs of the concept of the HEKAs acting as on-off thermal switches are demonstrated through experiments and simulations. The thermal switches exhibit a rapid thermal response speed of 0.73 °C s^-1 , high heat flux of 2044 J m^-2 s^-1 , and switching ratio of 7.5. Heat dissipation can be reversibly switched on/off more than fifty times owing to the hyperelasticity and fatigue resistance of the HEKAs. This study suggests a route to fulfill the hyperelasticity of highly porous aerogels and to tailor heat flux on-demand.

Pd Metallene Aerogels with Single-Atom W Doping for Selective Ethanol Oxidation

The development of advanced electrocatalysts with satisfactory C1 pathway selectivity for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) is critical. Herein, a bubbling CO-induced gelation method is developed in acetic acid at 50 °C to construct single-atom W-doped Pd metallene aerogels (denoted as SA W-Pd MAs) within 1 h. In light of the metallene structural advantages of noble metal aerogels and single-atom W decoration, the resultant SA W-Pd MAs exhibit an outstanding EOR performance with high C1 pathway selectivity. Density functional theory calculations validate that the SA W-Pd MAs greatly improve the formation of the CH₃O intermediate and the transformation of poisonous CO species to CO₂, thus resulting in high C1 pathway selectivity. Therefore, this work not only offers an effective gelation method to fabricate noble metal aerogels with atomic-scale building blocks but also presents guidance to develop high-efficiency EOR electrocatalysts.

In situ electrochemical synthesis of Pd aerogels as highly efficient anodic electrocatalysts for alkaline fuel cells

Improving the utilization of noble metals is extremely urgent for fuel cell electrocatalysis, while three-dimensional hierarchical noble metal aerogels with abundant sites and channels are proposed to reinforce their electrocatalytic performances and decrease their amounts. Herein, novel Pd aerogels with tunable surface chemical states were prepared through a facile in situ electrochemical activation, starting with PdO _x aerogels by the hydrolysis method. The hierarchical porous Pd aerogels showed unprecedented high activity towards the electrocatalytic oxidation of fuels including methanol (2.99 A mg_Pd ^-1), ethanol (8.81 A mg_Pd ^-1), and others in alkali, outperforming commercial catalysts (7.12- and 13.66-fold, corresponding to methanol and ethanol). Theoretical investigation unveiled the hybrid surface states with metallic and oxidized Pd species in Pd aerogels to regulate the adsorption of intermediates and facilitate the synergistic oxidation of adsorbed *CO, resulting in enhanced activity with the MOR as the model. Therefore, efficient Pd aerogels through the in situ electrochemical activation of PdO _x aerogels were proposed and showed great potential for fuel cell anodic electrocatalysis.

Ultra-Low Content Bismuth-Anchored Gold Aerogels with Plasmon Property for Enhanced Nonenzymatic Electrochemical Glucose Sensing

Effective glucose surveillance provides a strong guarantee for the high-quality development of human health. Au nanomaterials possess compelling applications in nonenzymatic electrochemical glucose biosensors owing to superior catalytic performances and intriguing biocompatibility properties. However, it has been a grand challenge to accurately control the architecture and composition of Au nanomaterials to optimize their optical, electronic, and magnetic properties for further improving the performance of electrocatalytic sensing. Herein, ultra-low content Bi-anchored Au aerogels are synthesized via a one-step reduction strategy. Benefiting from the unique structure of aerogels as well as the synergistic effect between Au and Bi, the optimized Au₂₀₀Bi aerogels greatly boost the activity of glucose oxidation compared with Au aerogels. Under plasmon resonance excitation, bimetallic Au₂₀₀Bi aerogels with wider photics-dependent properties further show plasmon-promoted glucose electro-oxidation activity, which is derived from the photothermal and photoelectric effects caused by the local surface plasmon resonance. Thanks to the enhanced performance, a nonenzymatic electrochemical glucose biosensor is constructed to detect glucose with high sensitivity. This plasmon-promoted electrocatalytic activity through the synergetic strategy of bimetallic aerogels has potential applications in various research fields.

Ultrasmall Gold Nanoclusters-Enabled Fabrication of Ultrafine Gold Aerogels as Novel Self-Supported Nanozymes

Metal aerogels represent an emerging type of functional porous materials with promising applications in diverse fields, but the fabrication of metal aerogels with specific structure and property still remains a challenge. Here, the authors report a new approach to fabricate metal aerogels by using ultrasmall metal nanoclusters (NCs) as functional building blocks. By taking D-penicillamine-stabilized gold NCs (AuNCs) with a diameter of 1.4 nm as an example, Au aerogels with ultrafine ligament size (3.5 nm) and good enzyme-mimic properties are synthesized. Detailed characterization shows that the obtained Au aerogels possess typical 3D self-supported porous network structure with high gold purity and surface area. Time-lapse spectroscopic and microscopic monitoring of the gelation process reveal that these ultrasmall AuNCs first grow into large nanoparticles before fusion into nanowire networks, during which both pH and the precursor concentration are identified to be the determining factor. Owing to their highly porous structure and abundant metal nodes, these self-supported Au aerogels display excellent peroxidase-like properties. This work provides a strategy for fabricating advanced metal aerogels by taking ultrasmall-sized metal NCs as building blocks, which also opens new avenues for engineering the structure and properties of metal aerogels for further advancing their applications.

Interstitial boron-triggered electron-deficient Os aerogels for enhanced pH-universal hydrogen evolution

Developing high-performance electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for sustainable hydrogen production, yet still challenging. Here, we report boron-modulated osmium (B-Os) aerogels with rich defects and ultra-fine diameter as a pH-universal HER electrocatalyst. The catalyst shows the small overpotentials of 12, 19, and 33 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm⁻² in acidic, alkaline, and neutral electrolytes, respectively, as well as excellent stability, surpassing commercial Pt/C. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that interventional interstitial B atoms can optimize the electron structure of B-Os aerogels and stabilize Os as active sites in an electron-deficient state under realistic working conditions, and simultaneously reveals the HER catalytic mechanisms of B-Os aerogels in pH-universal electrolytes. The density functional theory calculations also indicate introducing B atoms can tailor the electronic structure of Os, resulting in the reduced water dissociation energy and the improved adsorption/desorption behavior of hydrogen, which synergistically accelerate HER.

While noble metals can be active electrocatalysts for producing renewable H₂, there are relatively few works examining osmium materials. Here, the authors prepare boron-doped osmium aerogels for H₂ evolution electrocatalysis plus examine the mechanism using computational and in situ characterization.

A Metallic Ion-Induced Self-Assembly Enabling Nanowire-Based Aerogels

The controlled assembly of nanowires is one of the key challenges in the development of a range of functional 3D aerogels with unique physicochemical properties for practical applications. However, the deep understanding of the dynamic assemble process for fabricating nanowire aerogels remains elusive. Herein, a facile strategy is presented for the metallic ion-induced assembly of nanowires into macroscopic aerogels via a solution-based process. This method enables the interconnecting between polymer-decorated nanowires via metallic coordination, resulting in plenty of nanowire bundles with the same orientation. Besides, the coordinated binding strength of nanowires with different metallic ions is also discussed. The assembly mechanism that the metallic ions induced dynamic behavior of nanowires is revealed via molecular dynamics theoretical evaluation. These findings benefit for constructing nanowire-based aerogels with unique structural features and multi-function, which pave new opportunities for other material systems.

Integrating Highly Porous and Flexible Au Hydrogels with Soft-MEMS Technologies for High-Performance Wearable Biosensing

Wearable biosensors for real-time and non-invasive detection of biomarkers are of importance in early diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Herein, a high-performance wearable biosensing platform was proposed by combining a three-dimensional hierarchical porous Au hydrogel-enzyme electrode with high biocompatibility, activity, and flexibility and soft-MEMS technologies with high precision and capability of mass production. Using glucose oxidase as the model enzyme, the glucose sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 10.51 μA mM^-1 cm^-2, a long durability over 15 days, and a good selectivity. Under the mechanical deformation (0 to 90°), it is able to maintain an almost constant performance with a low deviation of <1.84%. With the assistance of a wireless or a Bluetooth module, this wearable sensing platform achieves real-time and non-invasive glucose monitoring on human skins. Similarly, continuous lactic acid monitoring was also realized with lactate oxidase immobilized on the same sensing platform, further verifying the universality of this sensing platform. Therefore, our work holds promise to provide a universal, high-performance wearable biosensing platform for various biomarkers in sweat and reliable diagnostic information for health management.

Ten-Minute Synthesis of Highly Conductive Polymer Nanosheets on Ice Surfaces: Role of Ice Crystallinity

Conducting polymers have been studied widely over the past decades for use as organic electrode materials owing to their high electrical conductivity and low-cost synthesis. Among the various synthesis methods reported, the recently established ice-assisted approach for developing conducting polymer nanosheets is regarded as an advanced technology that allows for easy fabrication in an eco-friendly manner. However, the role of the crystallinity of the underlying ice surface in determining the physicochemical properties of the conducting polymers remains unclear. Here, the electronic properties and packing structures of polyaniline (PANI) nanosheets formed on ice surfaces are studied by controlling the ice crystallinity. Intriguingly, the crystallinity of the PANI nanosheets resembles that of the ice surfaces, in that the anisotropic growth of the PANI crystals with a face-on orientation occurs preferentially on high-crystalline ice surfaces. In addition, it is found that the development of highly crystalline PANI nanosheets results in efficient charge transport, owing to polaron delocalization in PANI with extended chain conformations and the improvement in the degree of backbone ordering because of the preorganized aniline moieties on the ice surface.

Construction of Pd-Zn dual sites to enhance the performance for ethanol electro-oxidation reaction

Rational design and synthesis of superior electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation is crucial to practical applications of direct ethanol fuel cells. Here, we report that the construction of Pd-Zn dual sites with well exposure and uniformity can significantly improve the efficiency of ethanol electro-oxidation. Through synthetic method control, Pd-Zn dual sites on intermetallic PdZn nanoparticles, Pd-Pd sites on Pd nanoparticles and individual Pd sites are respectively obtained on the same N-doped carbon coated ZnO support. Compared with Pd-Pd sites and individual Pd sites, Pd-Zn dual sites display much higher activity for ethanol electro-oxidation, exceeding that of commercial Pd/C by a factor of ~24. Further computational studies disclose that Pd-Zn dual sites promote the adsorption of ethanol and hydroxide ion to optimize the electro-oxidation pathway with dramatically reduced energy barriers, leading to the superior activity. This work provides valuable clues for developing high-performance ethanol electro-oxidation catalysts for fuel cells.

Porous Noble Metal Electrocatalysts: Synthesis, Performance, and Development

Active sites (intrinsic activity, quantity, and distribution), electron transfer, and mass diffusion are three important factors affecting the performance of electrocatalysts. Composed of highly active components which are built into various network structures, porous noble metal is an inherently promising electrocatalysts. In recent years, great efforts have been made to explore new efficient synthesis methods and establish structural-performance relationships in the field of porous noble metal electrocatalysis. In this review, the very recent progress in strategies for preparing porous noble metal, including innovation and deeper understanding of traditional methods is summarized. A discussion of relationship between porous noble metal structure and electrocatalytic performance, such as accessibility of active sites, connectivity of skeleton structures, channels dimensions, and hierarchical structures, is provided.

Cryoaerogels and Cryohydrogels as Efficient Electrocatalysts

Additive-free cryoaerogel coatings from noble metal nanoparticles are prepared and electrochemically investigated. By using liquid nitrogen or isopentane as cooling medium, two different superstructures are created for each type of noble metal nanoparticle. These materials (made from the same amount of particles) have superior morphological and catalytic properties as compared to simply immobilized, densely packed nanoparticles. The morphology of all materials is investigated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemically active surface areas (ECSAs) are calculated from cyclic voltammetry measurements. The catalytic activity is studied for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). Both are found to be increased for superstructured materials prepared by cryoaerogelation. Furthermore, cryoaerogels with cellular to dendritic structure that arise from freezing with isopentane show the best catalytic performance and highest ECSA. Moreover, as a new class of materials, cryohydrogels are created for the first time by thawing flash-frozen nanoparticle solutions. Structure and morphology of these materials match with the corresponding types of cryoaerogels and are confirmed via SEM. Even the catalytic activity in EOR is in accordance with the results from cryoaerogel coatings. As a proof of concept, this approach offers a novel platform towards the easier and faster production of cryogelated materials for wet-chemical applications.

Noble Metal Aerogels

Noble metal-based nanomaterials have been a hot research topic during the past few decades. Particularly, self-assembled porous architectures have triggered tremendous interest. At the forefront of porous nanostructures, there exists a research endeavor of noble metal aerogels (NMAs), which are unique in terms of macroscopic assembly systems and three-dimensional (3D) porous network nanostructures. Combining excellent features of noble metals and the unique structural traits of porous nanostructures, NMAs are of high interest in diverse fields, such as catalysis, sensors, and self-propulsion devices. Regardless of these achievements, it is still challenging to rationally design well-tailored NMAs in terms of ligament sizes, morphologies, and compositions and profoundly investigate the underlying gelation mechanisms. Herein, an elaborate overview of the recent progress on NMAs is given. First, a simple description of typical synthetic methods and some advanced design engineering are provided, and then, the gelation mechanism models of NMAs are discussed in detail. Furthermore, promising applications particularly focusing on electrocatalysis and biosensors are highlighted. In the final section, brief conclusions and an outlook on the existing challenges and future chances of NMAs are also proposed.

Freeze-Thaw-Promoted Fabrication of Clean and Hierarchically Structured Noble-Metal Aerogels for Electrocatalysis and Photoelectrocatalysis

Noble‐metal aerogels (NMAs) have drawn increasing attention because of their self‐supported conductive networks, high surface areas, and numerous optically/catalytically active sites, enabling their impressive performance in diverse fields. However, the fabrication methods suffer from tedious procedures, long preparation times, unavoidable impurities, and uncontrolled multiscale structures, discouraging their developments. By utilizing the self‐healing properties of noble‐metal aggregates, the freezing‐promoted salting‐out behavior, and the ice‐templating effect, a freeze–thaw method is crafted that is capable of preparing various hierarchically structured noble‐metal gels within one day without extra additives. In light of their cleanliness, the multi‐scale structures, and combined catalytic/optical properties, the electrocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic performance of NMAs are demonstrated, which surpasses that of commercial noble‐metal catalysts.
