Coverage‐Dependent Behaviors of Vanadium Oxides for Chemical Looping Oxidative Dehydrogenation

Plasma-assisted manipulation of vanadia nanoclusters for efficient selective catalytic reduction of NOx

Supported nanoclusters (SNCs) with distinct geometric and electronic structures have garnered significant attention in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. However, their directed synthesis remains a challenge due to limited efficient approaches. This study presents a plasma-assisted treatment strategy to achieve supported metal oxide nanoclusters from a rapid transformation of monomeric dispersed metal oxides. As a case study, oligomeric vanadia-dominated surface sites were derived from the classic supported V2O5-WO3/TiO2 (VWT) catalyst and showed nearly an order of magnitude increase in turnover frequency (TOF) value via an H2-plasma treatment for selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3. Such oligomeric surface VOx sites were not only successfully observed and firstly distinguished from WOx and TiO2 by advanced electron microscopy, but also facilitated the generation of surface amide and nitrates intermediates that enable barrier-less steps in the SCR reaction as observed by modulation excitation spectroscopy technologies and predicted DFT calculations.

Structured Catalysts and Catalytic Processes: Transport and Reaction Perspectives

The structure of catalysts determines the performance of catalytic processes. Intrinsically, the electronic and geometric structures influence the interaction between active species and the surface of the catalyst, which subsequently regulates the adsorption, reaction, and desorption behaviors. In recent decades, the development of catalysts with complex structures, including bulk, interfacial, encapsulated, and atomically dispersed structures, can potentially affect the electronic and geometric structures of catalysts and lead to further control of the transport and reaction of molecules. This review describes comprehensive understandings on the influence of electronic and geometric properties and complex catalyst structures on the performance of relevant heterogeneous catalytic processes, especially for the transport and reaction over structured catalysts for the conversions of light alkanes and small molecules. The recent research progress of the electronic and geometric properties over the active sites, specifically for theoretical descriptors developed in the recent decades, is discussed at the atomic level. The designs and properties of catalysts with specific structures are summarized. The transport phenomena and reactions over structured catalysts for the conversions of light alkanes and small molecules are analyzed. At the end of this review, we present our perspectives on the challenges for the further development of structured catalysts and heterogeneous catalytic processes.

Tandem propane dehydrogenation and surface oxidation catalysts for selective propylene synthesis

Direct propane dehydrogenation (PDH) to propylene is a desirable commercial reaction but is highly endothermic and severely limited by thermodynamic equilibrium. Routes that oxidatively remove hydrogen as water have safety and cost challenges. We coupled chemical looping-selective hydrogen (H2) combustion and PDH with multifunctional ferric vanadate-vanadium oxide (FeVO4-VOx) redox catalysts. Well-dispersed VOx supported on aluminum oxide (Al2O3) provides dehydrogenation sites, and adjacent nanoscale FeVO4 acts as an oxygen carrier for subsequent H2 combustion. We achieved an integral performance of 81.3% propylene selectivity at 42.7% propane conversion at 550°C for 200 chemical looping cycles for the reoxidization of FeVO4. Based on catalytic experiments, spectroscopic characterization, and theory calculations, we propose a hydrogen spillover-mediated coupling mechanism. The hydrogen species generated at the VOx sites migrated to adjacent FeVO4 for combustion, which shifted PDH toward propylene. This mechanism is favored by the proximity between the dehydrogenation and combustion sites.

To be support or promoter: the mode of introducing ceria into commercial V2O5/TiO2 catalyst for enhanced Hg0 oxidation

Ce-modified commercial vanadium-based catalysts are still in a rapid development stage in terms of optimizing Hg⁰ oxidation performance. Due to the universal property of ceria, it can act as either support or promoter to supported vanadium-based catalysts. However, the introduction mode of Ce on the Hg⁰ oxidation is still unclarified. Herein, introducing Ce to vanadium-based catalysts as a promoter (VCe/Ti) plays a more effective role in the Hg⁰ oxidation than only doping Ce into TiO₂ support (V/CeTi). It is revealed that the strong interaction between V and Ce increases the orbital hybridization, and reduces the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of V, which is conducive to adsorbing and activating HCl. The excellent performance of the VCe/Ti catalyst can be ascribed to its superior redox ability, stronger HCl adsorption capacity, abundant surface oxygen vacancies, and the redox equilibrium (Ce³⁺ + V⁵⁺ ↔ Ce⁴⁺ + V⁴⁺), which improves electron transfer, and thus the catalytic activity. This work provides the potential application of Ce-modified V-based catalysts for the simultaneous control of NO_x and Hg⁰ in stationary sources.

NO Selective Catalytic Reduction over Atom-Pair Active Sites Accelerated via In Situ NO Oxidation

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO_x with NH₃ is the most efficient technology for NO_x emissions control, but the activity of catalysts decreases exponentially with the decrease in reaction temperature, hindering the application of the technology in low-temperature SCR to treat industrial stack gases. Here, we present an industrially practicable technology to significantly enhance the SCR activity at low temperatures (<250 °C). By introducing an appropriate amount of O₃ into the simulated stack gas, we find that O₃ can stoichiometrically oxidize NO to generate NO₂, which enables NO reduction to follow the fast SCR mechanism so as to accelerate SCR at low temperatures, and, in particular, an increase in SCR rate by more than four times is observed over atom-pair V₁-W₁ active sites supported on TiO₂(001) at 200 °C. Using operando SCR tests and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra, we reveal that the introduction of O₃ allows SCR to proceed along a NH₄NO₃-mediated Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, in which the adsorbed nitrate species speed up the re-oxidation of the catalytic sites that is the rate-limiting step of SCR, thus leading to the enhancement of activity at low temperatures. This technology could be applicable in the real stack gas conditions because O₃ exclusively oxidizes NO even in the co-presence of SO₂ and H₂O, which provides a general strategy to improve low-temperature SCR efficacy from another perspective beyond designing catalysts.

Mechanistic Insights into Radical-Induced Selective Oxidation of Methane over Nonmetallic Boron Nitride Catalysts

Boron-based nonmetallic materials (such as B₂O₃ and BN) emerge as promising catalysts for selective oxidation of light alkanes by O₂ to form value-added products, resulting from their unique advantage in suppressing CO₂ formation. However, the site requirements and reaction mechanism of these boron-based catalysts are still in vigorous debate, especially for methane (the most stable and abundant alkane). Here, we show that hexagonal BN (h-BN) exhibits high selectivities to formaldehyde and CO in catalyzing aerobic oxidation of methane, similar to Al₂O₃-supported B₂O₃ catalysts, while h-BN requires an extra induction period to reach a steady state. According to various structural characterizations, we find that active boron oxide species are gradually formed in situ on the surface of h-BN, which accounts for the observed induction period. Unexpectedly, kinetic studies on the effects of void space, catalyst loading, and methane conversion all indicate that h-BN merely acts as a radical generator to induce gas-phase radical reactions of methane oxidation, in contrast to the predominant surface reactions on B₂O₃/Al₂O₃ catalysts. Consequently, a revised kinetic model is developed to accurately describe the gas-phase radical feature of methane oxidation over h-BN. With the aid of in situ synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectroscopy, the methyl radical (CH₃^•) is further verified as the primary reactive species that triggers the gas-phase methane oxidation network. Theoretical calculations elucidate that the moderate H-abstraction ability of predominant CH₃^• and CH₃OO^• radicals renders an easier control of the methane oxidation selectivity compared to other oxygen-containing radicals generally proposed for such processes, bringing deeper understanding of the excellent anti-overoxidation ability of boron-based catalysts.

An Atom-Pair Design Strategy for Optimizing the Synergistic Electron Effects of Catalytic Sites in NO Selective Reduction

Effective adsorption and speedy surface reactions are vital requirements for efficient active sites in catalysis, but it remains challenging to maximize these two functions simultaneously. We present a solution to this issue by designing a series of atom-pair catalytic sites with tunable electronic interactions. As a case study, NO selective reduction occurring on V₁ -W₁ /TiO₂ is chosen. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the synergistic electron effect present between the paired atoms enriches high-energy spin charge around the Fermi level, simultaneously rendering reactant (NH₃ or O₂ ) adsorption more effective and subsequent surface reactions speedier as compared with single V or W atom alone, and hence higher reaction rates. This strategy enables us to rationally design a high-performance V₁ -Mo₁ /TiO₂ catalyst with optimized vanadium(IV)-molybdenum(V) electronic interactions, which has exceptional activity significantly higher than the commercial or reported catalysts.

Electroreductive coupling of benzaldehyde by balancing the formation and dimerization of the ketyl intermediate

Electroreductive coupling of biomass-derived benzaldehyde offers a sustainable approach to producing value-added hydrobenzoin. The low efficiency of the reaction mainly ascribes to the mismatch of initial formation and subsequent dimerization of ketyl intermediates (Ph-CH = O → Ph-C·-OH → Ph-C(OH)-C(OH)-Ph). This paper describes a strategy to balance the active sites for the generation and dimerization of ketyl intermediates by constructing bimetallic Pd/Cu electrocatalysts with tunable surface coverage of Pd. A Faradaic efficiency of 63.2% and a hydrobenzoin production rate of up to 1.27 mmol mg^-1 h^-1 (0.43 mmol cm^-2 h^-1) are achieved at -0.40 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that Pd promotes the generation of the ketyl intermediate, and Cu enhances their dimerization. Moreover, the balance between these two sites facilitates the coupling of benzaldehyde towards hydrobenzoin. This work offers a rational strategy to design efficient electrocatalysts for complex reactions through the optimization of specified active sites for different reaction steps.

Formic Acid-Mediated Regeneration Strategy for As-Poisoned V2O5-WO3/TiO2 Catalysts with Lossless Catalytic Activity and Simultaneous As Recycling

Regeneration of spent V₂O₅-WO₃/TiO₂ catalysts is highly desirable, especially for those containing hypertoxic As, which is categorized as hazardous waste. However, common solution-leaching methods suffer from the trade-off between As removal and V₂O₅ retention, and it would be necessary to introduce extra proceedings like ingredients reimplantation and As-bearing waste treatment after regeneration. Herein, a formic acid-mediated regeneration strategy has been developed to achieve superior catalytic activity, short timescale regeneration, and nontoxic metallic As recycling with controllable and safe conduction. The specific activity of the optimal regenerated catalyst reaches 98.3% of the fresh catalyst with 99.1% As removal and less than 1.8% V loss within 15 min. Structure characterizations reveal that the distorted VO_x molecular structure, surface acidity, and redox property recover to the fresh level after regeneration. In situ investigation of the regeneration process indicates that As-OH removal together with V-OH generation occurs at the first regeneration stage, followed by the active center V═O sites over-reduction at the second stage. The retained V═O species by suitable regeneration temperature and time are essential for NH₃-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) since As existence and VO_x over-reduction will separately cause unstable and excessive NH₃ adsorption to further suppress the reaction cycle. The developed strategy and improved understanding of active site protection would exert benefits on the development of efficient and time-saving regeneration methods for spent catalysts.

Light olefin synthesis from a diversity of renewable and fossil feedstocks: state-of the-art and outlook

Light olefins are important feedstocks and platform molecules for the chemical industry. Their synthesis has been a research priority in both academia and industry. There are many different approaches to the synthesis of these compounds, which differ by the choice of raw materials, catalysts and reaction conditions. The goals of this review are to highlight the most recent trends in light olefin synthesis and to perform a comparative analysis of different synthetic routes using several quantitative characteristics: selectivity, productivity, severity of operating conditions, stability, technological maturity and sustainability. Traditionally, on an industrial scale, the cracking of oil fractions has been used to produce light olefins. Methanol-to-olefins, alkane direct or oxidative dehydrogenation technologies have great potential in the short term and have already reached scientific and technological maturities. Major progress should be made in the field of methanol-mediated CO and CO₂ direct hydrogenation to light olefins. The electrocatalytic reduction of CO₂ to light olefins is a very attractive process in the long run due to the low reaction temperature and possible use of sustainable electricity. The application of modern concepts such as electricity-driven process intensification, looping, CO₂ management and nanoscale catalyst design should lead in the near future to more environmentally friendly, energy efficient and selective large-scale technologies for light olefin synthesis.

Main-Group Catalysts with Atomically Dispersed In Sites for Highly Efficient Oxidative Dehydrogenation

Transition metal oxides are well-known catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation thanks to their excellent ability to activate alkanes. However, they suffer from an inferior alkene yield due to the trade-off between the conversion and selectivity induced by more reactive alkenes than alkanes, which obscures the optimization of catalysts. Herein, we attempt to overcome this challenge by activating a selective main-group indium oxide considered to be inactive for oxidative dehydrogenation in conventional wisdom. Atomically dispersed In sites with the local structure of [InOH]²⁺ anchored by substituting the protons of supercages in HY are enclosed to be active centers that enable the activation of ethane with a metal-normalized turnover number of almost one magnitude higher than those of their supported In₂O₃ counterparts. Furthermore, the structure of isolated [InOH]²⁺ sites could be stabilized by in situ formed H₂O from the selective oxidation of hydrogen by In₂O₃ nanoparticles. As a result, the as-designed main-group In catalysts exhibit 80% ethene selectivity at 80% ethane conversion, thus achieving 60% ethene yield due to active isolated [InOH]²⁺ sites and selective In₂O₃ nanoparticles, outperforming state-of-the-art transition metal oxide catalysts. This study unlocks new opportunities for the utilization of main-group elements and could pave the way toward a more rational design of catalysts for highly efficient selective oxidation catalysis.

Alkali metal halide-coated perovskite redox catalysts for anaerobic oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane

Oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of n-butane has the potential to efficiently produce butadiene without equilibrium limitation or coke formation. Despite extensive research efforts, single-pass butadiene yields are limited to <23% in conventional catalytic ODH with gaseous O₂. This article reports molten LiBr as an effective promoter to modify a redox-active perovskite oxide, i.e., La_0.8Sr_0.2FeO₃ (LSF), for chemical looping-oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane (CL-ODHB). Under the working state, the redox catalyst is composed of a molten LiBr layer covering the solid LSF substrate. Characterizations and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations indicate that peroxide species formed on LSF react with molten LiBr to form active atomic Br, which act as reaction intermediates for C─H bond activation. Meanwhile, molten LiBr layer inhibits unselective CO₂ formation, leading to 42.5% butadiene yield. The redox catalyst design strategy can be extended to CL-ODH of other light alkanes such as iso-butane conversion to iso-butylene, providing a generalized approach for olefin production.

Structure-Directing Role of Support on Hg0 Oxidation over V2O5/TiO2 Catalyst Revealed for NOx and Hg0 Simultaneous Control in an SCR Reactor

The crystal structure of TiO₂ strongly influences the physiochemical properties of supported active sites and thus the catalytic performance of the as-synthesized catalyst. Herein, we synthesized TiO₂ with different crystal forms (R = rutile, A = anatase, and B = brookite), which were used as supports to prepare vanadium-based catalysts for Hg⁰ oxidation. The Hg⁰ oxidation efficiency over V₂O₅/TiO₂-B was the best, followed by V₂O₅/TiO₂-A and V₂O₅/TiO₂-R. Further experimental and theoretical results indicate that gaseous Hg⁰ reacts with surface-active chlorine species produced by the adsorbed HCl and the reaction orders of Hg⁰ oxidation over V₂O₅/TiO₂ catalyst with respect to HCl and Hg⁰ concentration were approximately 0 and 1, respectively. The excellent Hg⁰ oxidation efficiency over V₂O₅/TiO₂-B can be attributed to lower redox temperature, larger HCl adsorption capacity, and more oxygen vacancies. This work suggests that to achieve the best simultaneous removal of NO_x and Hg⁰ on state-of-the-art V₂O₅/TiO₂ catalyst, a combination of anatase and brookite TiO₂-supported vanadyl tandem catalysts is supposed to be employed in the SCR reactor, and the brookite-type catalyst should be on the downstream of the anatase-based catalyst due to the inhibition of NH₃ on Hg⁰ oxidation.

Enhanced C–H bond activation by tuning the local environment of surface lattice oxygen of MoO3

The lattice oxygen on transition metal oxides serves as a critical active site in the dehydrogenation of alkanes, whose activity is determined by electronic properties and environmental structures. Hydrogen affinity has been used as a universal descriptor to predict C–H bond activation, while the understanding of the environmental structure is ambiguous due to its complexity. This paper describes a combined theoretical and experimental study to reveal the activity of lattice oxygen species with different local structures, taking Mo-based oxides and C–H bond activation of low-carbon alkanes as model catalytic systems. Our theoretical work suggests that oxygen species with convex curvature are more active than those with concave curvature. Theoretically, we propose an interpretative descriptor, the activation deformation energy, to quantify the surface reconstruction induced by adsorbates with various environmental structures. Experimentally, a Mo-based polyoxometalate with the convex curvature structure shows nearly five times the initial activity than single-crystal molybdenum oxide with the concave one. This work provides theoretical guidance for designing metal oxide catalysts with high activity.

Tuning of the environmental structure near the lattice oxygen of molybdenum oxides can form a favorable spatial structure to enhance the intrinsic activity for C–H bond activation.

Electrocatalytic Methane Oxidation Greatly Promoted by Chlorine Intermediates

Renewable energy-powered methane (CH₄ ) conversion at ambient conditions is an attractive but highly challenging field. Due to the highly inert character of CH₄ , the selective cleavage of its first C-H bond without over-oxidation is essential for transforming CH₄ into value-added products. In this work, we developed an efficient and selective CH₄ conversion approach at room temperature using intermediate chlorine species (*Cl), which were electrochemically generated and stabilized on mixed cobalt-nickel spinels with different Co/Ni ratios. The lower overpotentials for *Cl formation enabled an effective activation and conversion of CH₄ to CH₃ Cl without over-oxidation to CO₂ , and Ni³⁺ at the octahedral sites in the mixed cobalt-nickel spinels allowed to stabilize surface-bound *Cl species. The CoNi₂ O_x electrocatalyst exhibited an outstanding yield of CH₃ Cl (364 mmol g^-1  h^-1 ) and a high CH₃ Cl/CO₂ selectivity of over 400 at room temperature, with demonstrated capability of direct CH₄ conversion under seawater working conditions.

C-H bond activation in light alkanes: a theoretical perspective

Alkanes are the major constituents of natural gas and crude oil, the feedstocks for the chemical industry. The efficient and selective activation of C-H bonds can convert abundant and low-cost hydrocarbon feedstocks into value-added products. Due to the increasing global demand for light alkenes and their corresponding polymers as well as synthesis gas and hydrogen production, C-H bond activation of light alkanes has attracted widespread attention. A theoretical understanding of C-H bond activation in light hydrocarbons via density functional theory (DFT) and microkinetic modeling provides a feasible approach to gain insight into the process and guidelines for designing more efficient catalysts to promote light alkane transformation. This review describes the recent progress in computational catalysis that has addressed the C-H bond activation of light alkanes. We start with direct and oxidative C-H bond activation of methane, with emphasis placed on kinetic and mechanistic insights obtained from DFT assisted microkinetic analysis into steam and dry reforming, and the partial oxidation dependence on metal/oxide surfaces and nanoparticle size. Direct and oxidative activation of the C-H bond of ethane and propane on various metal and oxide surfaces are subsequently reviewed, including the elucidation of active sites, intriguing mechanisms, microkinetic modeling, and electronic features of the ethane and propane conversion processes with a focus on suppressing the side reaction and coke formation. The main target of this review is to give fundamental insight into C-H bond activation of light alkanes, which can provide useful guidance for the optimization of catalysts in future research.

Status and prospects of the decentralised valorisation of natural gas into energy and energy carriers

We critically review the recent advances in process, reactor, and catalyst design that enable process miniaturisation for decentralised natural gas upgrading into electricity, liquefied natural gas, fuels and chemicals.
