The Role of Metal–Organic Frameworks in Electronic Sensors

Bioinspired multi-scale interface design for wet gas sensing based on rational water management

Natural organisms have evolved multi-scale wet gas sensing interfaces with optimized mass transport pathways in biological fluid environments, which sheds light on developing artificial counterparts with improved wet gas sensing abilities and practical applications. Herein, we highlighted current advances in wet gas sensing taking advantage of optimized mass transport pathways endowed by multi-scale interface design. Common moisture resistance (e.g., employing moisture resistant sensing materials, post-modifying moisture resistant coatings, physical heating for moisture resistance, and self-removing hydroxyl groups) and moisture absorption (e.g., employing moisture absorption sensing materials and post-modifying moisture absorption coatings) strategies for wet gas sensing were discussed. Then, the design principles of bioinspired multi-scale wet gas sensing interfaces were provided, including macro-level condensation mediation, micro/nano-level transport pathway adjustment and molecular level moisture-proof design. Finally, perspectives on constructing bioinspired multi-scale wet gas sensing interfaces were presented, which will not only deepen our understanding of the underlying principles, but also promote practical applications.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-encapsulated zinc porphyrin photoresponsive nanozyme for colorimetric/fluorescent dual-mode sensing of glyphosate

A novel zeolitic imidazolate framework-encapsulated zinc porphyrin (ZnTCPP@ZIF-90) photoresponsive nanozyme is proposed for the colorimetric/fluorescent dual-mode visual sensing of glyphosate (Gly). ZnTCPP@ZIF-90 exhibits photoresponsive oxidase-like activity and fluorescence quenching behavior. Meanwhile, the outer ZIF-90 layer can be selectively destroyed by Gly, causing the release of free ZnTCPP, resulting in the enhanced enzyme-like activity as well as fluorescence emission. The constructed ZnTCPP@ZIF-90 was successfully used for the colorimetric/fluorescent dual-mode detection of Gly. Additionally, the colorimetric and fluorescent images information captured by the smartphone were converted to color intensity (HSV/RGB values), with limits of detection of 0.27 μg/mL and 0.19 μg/mL, respectively. The proposed dual-mode sensor exhibits excellent selectivity and reliability for detecting Gly, and can be successfully applied to the analysis of real samples such as tap water, lake water, and fruit washing water. The current research efforts are expected to provide new perspectives for designing highly active photoresponsive nanozymes and their stimuli-responsive sensing systems, paving the way for their applications in portable dual-mode chemical sensing and environmental monitoring.

A Dual-Function AgNW@COF SERS Membrane for Organic Pollutant Removal and Simultaneous Concentration Determination

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly sensitive analytical detection method commonly employed in biochemical and environmental analysis. Nevertheless, the rapid movement of analytes and interfering components in flow systems can impact the real-time, online detection capability of Raman spectroscopy. To address this issue, we developed an innovative approach utilizing covalent organic framework (COF), a robust porous material with excellent water stability, to coat the surface of Ag nanowire (AgNW) for synthesizing AgNW@COF hybrid. The regular pores of the COF serve to effectively eliminate large interfering molecules while facilitating the efficient transport of specific analytes to SERS hot spots. Additionally, the fluid flow-induced scouring effect aids in excluding interfering molecules from the surface of AgNW. By incorporating AgNW@COF into a bifunctional filter membrane with simultaneous filtration and sensing capabilities, we had achieved efficient purification of organic pollutants as well as real-time identification of pollutant species and concentration.

Powders to Thin Films: Advances in Conjugated Microporous Polymer Chemical Sensors

Chemical sensing of harmful species released either from natural or anthropogenic activities is critical to ensuring human safety and health. Over the last decade, conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have been proven to be potential sensor materials with the possibility of realizing sensing devices for practical applications. CMPs found to be unique among other porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) due to their high chemical/thermal stability, high surface area, microporosity, efficient host-guest interactions with the analyte, efficient exciton migration along the π-conjugated chains, and tailorable structure to target specific analytes. Several CMP-based optical, electrochemical, colorimetric, and ratiometric sensors with excellent selectivity and sensing performance were reported. This review comprehensively discusses the advances in CMP chemical sensors (powders and thin films) in the detection of nitroaromatic explosives, chemical warfare agents, anions, metal ions, biomolecules, iodine, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with simultaneous delineation of design strategy principles guiding the selectivity and sensitivity of CMP. Preceding this, various photophysical mechanisms responsible for chemical sensing are discussed in detail for convenience. Finally, future challenges to be addressed in the field of CMP chemical sensors are discussed.

Construction of Indium(III)-Organic Framework Based on a Flexible Cyclotriphosphazene-Derived Hexacarboxylate as a Reusable Green Catalyst for the Synthesis of Bioactive Aza-Heterocycles

The constant demand for eco-friendly methods of synthesizing complex organic compounds inspired researchers to design and develop modern, highly efficient heterogeneous catalytic systems. Herein, In-HCPCP metal-organic framework (SRMIST-1), a heterogeneous Lewis acid catalyst containing less toxic indium and eco-friendly robust cyclotriphosphazene and exhibiting notable chemical and thermal stability, durable catalytic activity, and exceptional reusability was produced through the reaction between indium(III) nitrate hydrate and hexakis(4-carboxylatophenoxy)-cyclotriphosphazene. In the SRMIST-1 structure, secondary building units {InO7} are assembled by a connection of η2- and η1-carboxylic oxo atoms from different HCPCP ligands, forming a three-dimensional network. The occurrence of regularly distributed In(III) sites in SRMIST-1 confers superior reactivity on the catalyst toward the synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones and 3,4-dihydro-2H-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine-1,1-dioxides by the cyclization reaction of 2-aminobenzamides and 2-aminobenzenesulphonamides with aldehydes under optimized reaction conditions, respectively. The notable features of this method include broad functional group compatibility, low catalyst loading (1-5 mol %), mild reaction conditions, easy workup procedures, good to excellent reaction yields, ethanol as a green solvent, reusability of the catalyst (five cycles), and economic attractiveness, which is mainly due to sustainability of SRMIST-1 as a reusable green catalyst. Our findings demonstrate that the highly reactive and reusable green catalyst finds widespread applications in medicinal chemistry.

ZnO nanostructures: A promising frontier in immunosensor development

This review addresses the design of immunosensors, which employ ZnO nanostructures. Various methods of modifying ZnO nanostructures with antibodies or antigens are discussed, including covalent and non-covalent approaches and cross-linking techniques. Immunosensors based on different properties of ZnO nanomaterials are described and compared. This article provides a comprehensive review of electrochemical immunosensors based on ZnO nanostructures and various detection techniques, including cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and other electrochemical methods. In addition, this review article examines the application of optical detection techniques, including photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemiluminescence (ECL), in the development of immunosensors based on ZnO nanostructures.

Perspective into ion storage of pristine metal-organic frameworks in capacitive deionization

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring tunable conductivity, tailored pore/structure and high surface area, have emerged as promising electrode nanomaterials for ion storage in capacitive deionization (CDI) and garnered tremendous attention in recent years. Despite the many advantages, the perspective from which MOFs should be designed and prepared for use as CDI electrode materials still faces various challenges that hinder their practical application. This summary proposes design principles for the pore size, pore environment, structure and dimensions of MOFs to precisely tailor the surface area, selectivity, conductivity, and Faradaic activity of electrode materials based on the ion storage mechanism in the CDI process. The account provides a new perspective to deepen the understanding of the fundamental issues of MOFs electrode materials to further meet the practical applications of CDI.

Ligand-Oxidation-Based Anodic Synthesis of Oriented Films of Conductive M-Catecholate Metal-Organic Frameworks with Controllable Thickness

Effective control over the crystallization of metal-organic framework (MOF) films is of great importance not only for the performance study and optimization in related applications but also for the fundamental understanding of the involved reticular chemistry. Featuring many technological advantages, electrochemical synthesis has been extensively reported for many MOF materials but is still challenged by the production of dense oriented films with a large-range tuning of thickness. Here, we report a ligand-oxidation-based anodic strategy capable of synthesizing oriented films of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) conductive M-catecholate MOFs (2D Cu3(HHTP)2, 2D Zn3(HHTP)2, 2D Co3(HHTP)2, 3D YbHHTP, and 2D Cu2TBA) with tunable thicknesses up to tens of micrometers on commonly used electrodes. This anodic strategy relies on the oxidation of redox-active catechol ligands and follows a stepwise electrochemical-chemical reaction mechanism to achieve effective control over crystallizing M-catecholate MOFs into films oriented in the [001] direction. Benefiting from the electrically conductive nature, Cu3(HHTP)2 films could be thickened at a steady rate (17.4 nm·min-1) from ∼90 nm to 10.7 μm via a growth mechanism differing from those adopted in previous electrochemical synthesis of dense MOF films with limited thickness due to the self-inhibition effect. This anodic synthesis could be further combined with a templating strategy to fabricate not only films with well-defined 2D features in sizes from micrometers to millimeters but also high aspect ratio mesostructures, such as nanorods, of Cu3(HHTP)2.

Free-standing conductive nickel metal-organic framework nanowires as bifunctional electrodes for wearable pressure sensors and Ni-Zn batteries

Free-standing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with controllable structure and good stability are emerging as promising materials for applications in flexible pressure sensors and energy-storage devices. However, the inherent low electrical conductivity of MOF-based materials requires complex preparation processes that involve high-temperature carbonization. This work presents a simple method to grow conductive nickel MOF nanowire arrays on carbon cloth (Ni-CAT@CC) and use Ni-CAT@CC as the functional electrodes for flexible piezoresistive sensor. The resulting sensor is able to monitor human activity, including elbow bending, knee bending, and wrist bending. Besides, the soft-packaged aqueous Ni-Zn battery is assembled with Ni-CAT@CC, a piece of glass microfiber filters, and Zn foil acting as cathode, separator, and anode, respectively. The Ni-Zn battery can be used as a power source for finger pressure monitoring. This work demonstrates free-standing MOF-based nanowires as bifunctional fabric electrodes for wearable electronics.

Impedance-Based Detection of NO2 Using Ni-MOF-74: Influence of Competitive Gas Adsorption

Chemically robust, low-power sensors are needed for the direct electrical detection of toxic gases. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer exceptional chemical and structural tunability to meet this challenge, though further understanding is needed regarding how coadsorbed gases influence or interfere with the electrical response. To probe the influence of competitive gases on trace NO2 detection in a simulated flue gas stream, a combined structure-property study integrating synchrotron powder diffraction and pair distribution function analyses was undertaken, to elucidate how structural changes associated with gas binding inside Ni-MOF-74 pores correlate with the electrical response from Ni-MOF-74-based sensors. Data were evaluated for 16 gas combinations of N2, NO2, SO2, CO2, and H2O at 50 °C. Fourier difference maps from a rigid-body Rietveld analysis showed that additional electron density localized around the Ni-MOF-74 lattice correlated with large decreases in Ni-MOF-74 film resistance of up to a factor of 6 × 103, observed only when NO2 was present. These changes in resistance were significantly amplified by the presence of competing gases, except for CO2. Without NO2, H2O rapidly (<120 s) produced small (1-3×) decreases in resistance, though this effect could be differentiated from the slower adsorption of NO2 by the evaluation of the MOF's capacitance. Furthermore, samples exposed to H2O displayed a significant shift in lattice parameters toward a larger lattice and more diffuse charge density in the MOF pore. Evaluating the Ni-MOF-74 impedance in real time, NO2 adsorption was associated with two electrically distinct processes, the faster of which was inhibited by competitive adsorption of CO2. Together, this work points to the unique interaction of NO2 and other specific gases (e.g., H2O, SO2) with the MOF's surface, leading to orders of magnitude decrease in MOF resistance and enhanced NO2 detection. Understanding and leveraging these coadsorbed gases will further improve the gas detection properties of MOF materials.

Self-Catalysis Transformation of Metal-Organic Coordination Polymers

Designing a multidimensional transformation of metal-organic coordination polymers (MOPs) is highly attractive yet very challenging. Herein, by combining the dynamicity of the coordination bond with the controllability of the chemical reaction, the concept of self-catalysis transformation of MOPs is first proposed. It uses the metal in MOPs as the catalyst to catalyze the chemical reaction of the ligand in the frameworks, simultaneously changing the coordination environment of the metal and the structure of the ligand, resulting in the controllable multidimensional transformation in the morphology and structure of MOPs. The self-catalysis transformation of MOPs can be triggered by heat or light, and crystals with various morphologies and structures can be obtained. Significantly, because the self-catalysis reaction is constraint in the framework, the products at different transformation processes are relatively stable. Monitoring and characterizing the transformation of MOPs give evidences for the exploration of the self-catalysis reaction, and a plausible transformation mechanism is proposed and proved. It can be foreseen that this novel self-catalysis transformation strategy might open up a new direction for the diverse development of MOPs and provide a powerful tool for the study of organic reaction mechanism.

Fiber SPR biosensor sensitized by MOFs for MUC1 protein detection

The concentration of tumor markers is low, which needs a highly sensitive, stable and fast detection method. In this paper, we proposed and demonstrated a U-shape fiber SPR biosensor sensitized by MOFs materials. The surface of the U-shape SPR sensor was modified with MOFs materials to enhance the sensitivity, and the nucleic acid aptamer was immobilized on the sensor surface because of the biocompatibility of MOFs materials. By the high specificity of the nucleic acid aptamer, the MUC1 protein was recognized and detected. The testing results indicate that the sensor has a logarithmic linear response in the MUC1 protein concentration detection range of 1 pg/ml-100 μg/ml, its sensitivity and detection limit are 5.33 nm/log(μg/ml) and 0.16 pg/ml respectively. After being sensitized by MOFs, the detection sensitivity of the sensor can be increased by 1.62 times，the LOD can be decreased by 0.75 times. The sensor has high sensitivity and specificity, which has broad application prospects in clinical detection of tumor markers.

Biocompatible Material-Based Flexible Biosensors: From Materials Design to Wearable/Implantable Devices and Integrated Sensing Systems

Human beings have a greater need to pursue life and manage personal or family health in the context of the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things, and 5G/6G technologies. The application of micro biosensing devices is crucial in connecting technology and personalized medicine. Here, the progress and current status from biocompatible inorganic materials to organic materials and composites are reviewed and the material-to-device processing is described. Next, the operating principles of pressure, chemical, optical, and temperature sensors are dissected and the application of these flexible biosensors in wearable/implantable devices is discussed. Different biosensing systems acting in vivo and in vitro, including signal communication and energy supply are then illustrated. The potential of in-sensor computing for applications in sensing systems is also discussed. Finally, some essential needs for commercial translation are highlighted and future opportunities for flexible biosensors are considered.

Stepwise Crystallization of Millimeter Scale Thorium Cluster Single Crystals as a Bifunctional Platform for X-ray Detection and Shielding

Monitoring and shielding of X-ray radiation are of paramount importance across diverse fields. However, they are frequently realized in separate protocols and a single material integrating both functions remained elusive. Herein, a hexanuclear cluster [Th₆ (µ₃ -OH)₄ (µ₃ -O)₄ (H₂ O)₆ ](pba)₆ (HCOO)₆ (Th-pba-0D) incorporating high-Z thorium cations and 3-(pyridin-4-yl)benzoate ligands that can function as a brand-new dual-module platform for visible detection and efficient shielding of ionizing radiation is demonstrated. Th-pba-0D exhibits rather unique reversible radiochromism upon alternating X-ray and UV irradiation. Moreover, the millimeter scale crystal size of Th-pba-0D renders the penetration depth of X-ray visible to naked eye and leads to the unearthing of its high X-ray attenuation efficiency. Indeed, the shielding efficacy of Th-pba-0D is comparable to that of lead glass containing 40% PbO, and a Th-pba-0D pellet with a thickness of merely 1.2 mm can shield 99.73% X-ray (16 keV). These studies portend the possible utilization of thorium-bearing materials as a bifunctional platform for radiation detection and shielding.

Engineering Geobacter pili to produce metal:organic filaments

The organized self-assembly of conductive biological structures holds promise for creating new bioelectronic devices. In particular, Geobacter sulfurreducens type IVa pili have proven to be a versatile material for fabricating protein nanowire-based devices. To scale the production of conductive pili, we designed a strain of Shewanella oneidensis that heterologously expressed abundant, conductive Geobacter pili when grown aerobically in liquid culture. S. oneidensis expressing a cysteine-modified pilin, designed to enhance the capability to bind to gold, generated conductive pili that self-assembled into biohybrid filaments in the presence of gold nanoparticles. Elemental composition analysis confirmed the filament-metal interactions within the structures, which were several orders of magnitude larger than previously described metal:organic filaments. The results demonstrate that the S. oneidensis chassis significantly advances the possibilities for facile conductive protein nanowire design and fabrication.

Charge transfer in metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, also known as porous coordination polymers or PCPs) are a novel class of crystalline porous material. The tailorable porous structure, in terms of size, geometry and function, has attracted the attention of researchers across all disciplines of materials science. One of the many exciting aspects of MOFs is that through directional and reversible coordination bonding, organic linkers (chromophores with metal-coordinating functional groups) and metal ions (and clusters) can be spatially organized in a preconceived geometry. The well-defined spatial geometry of the metals and linkers is very advantageous for optoelectronic functions (solar cells, light-emitting diodes, photocatalysts) of the materials. This feature article evaluates the scope of charge transfer (CT) interactions in MOFs, involving the organic linkers and metal ion or cluster components. Irrespective of the type (size, shape, electronic property) of organic chromophores involved, MOFs provide an insightful path to design and make the CT process efficient. The selected examples of MOFs with CT characteristics do not only illustrate the design principles but render a pathway towards understanding the complex photophysical processes and implementing those for future optoelectronic and catalytic applications.

Spatiotemporal Design of the Metal-Organic Framework DUT-8(M)

Switchable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) change their structure in time and selectively open their pores adsorbing guest molecules, leading to highly selective separation, pressure amplification, sensing, and actuation applications. The 3D engineering of MOFs has reached a high level of maturity, but spatiotemporal evolution opens a new perspective toward engineering materials in the 4th dimension (time) by t-axis design, in essence exploiting the deliberate tuning of activation barriers. This work demonstrates the first example in which an explicit temporal engineering of a switchable MOF (DUT-8, [M₁ M₂ (2,6-ndc)₂ dabco]_n , 2,6-ndc = 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate, dabco = 1,4diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, M₁  = Ni, M₂  = Co) is presented. The temporal response is deliberately tuned by variations in cobalt content. A spectrum of advanced analytical methods is presented for analyzing the switching kinetics stimulated by vapor adsorption using in situ time-resolved techniques ranging from ensemble adsorption and advanced synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments to individual crystal analysis. A novel analysis technique based on microscopic observation of individual crystals in a microfluidic channel reveals the lowest limit for adsorption switching reported so far. Differences in the spatiotemporal response of crystal ensembles originate from an induction time that varies statistically and widens characteristically with increasing cobalt content reflecting increasing activation barriers.

Graphene-Based Metal-Organic Framework Hybrids for Applications in Catalysis, Environmental, and Energy Technologies

Current energy and environmental challenges demand the development and design of multifunctional porous materials with tunable properties for catalysis, water purification, and energy conversion and storage. Because of their amenability to de novo reticular chemistry, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become key materials in this area. However, their usefulness is often limited by low chemical stability, conductivity and inappropriate pore sizes. Conductive two-dimensional (2D) materials with robust structural skeletons and/or functionalized surfaces can form stabilizing interactions with MOF components, enabling the fabrication of MOF nanocomposites with tunable pore characteristics. Graphene and its functional derivatives are the largest class of 2D materials and possess remarkable compositional versatility, structural diversity, and controllable surface chemistry. Here, we critically review current knowledge concerning the growth, structure, and properties of graphene derivatives, MOFs, and their graphene@MOF composites as well as the associated structure-property-performance relationships. Synthetic strategies for preparing graphene@MOF composites and tuning their properties are also comprehensively reviewed together with their applications in gas storage/separation, water purification, catalysis (organo-, electro-, and photocatalysis), and electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Current challenges in the development of graphene@MOF hybrids and their practical applications are addressed, revealing areas for future investigation. We hope that this review will inspire further exploration of new graphene@MOF hybrids for energy, electronic, biomedical, and photocatalysis applications as well as studies on previously unreported properties of known hybrids to reveal potential "diamonds in the rough".

Signal-On Near-Infrared Photoelectrochemical Aptasensors for Sensing VEGF165 Based on Ionic Liquid-Functionalized Nd-MOF Nanorods and In-Site Formation of Gold Nanoparticles

The low photon energy and deep penetrating ability of near-infrared (NIR) light make it an ideal light source for a photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensing system. Absorption wavelengths of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be regulated by adjusting the metal ions and the conjugation degree of the ligands. Herein, an ionic liquid with a large conjugated structure was synthesized and was used as a ligand to coordinate with Nd ions to prepare Nd-MOF nanorods with a band gap of 1.26 eV. The Nd-MOF rods show a good photoabsorption property from 200 to 980 nm. A PEC platform was constructed by using Nd-MOF nanorods as the photoelectroactive element. A detachable double-stranded DNA labeled with alkaline phosphatase (ALP), which is specific to VEGF165, was immobilized onto the PEC sensing interface. After blocking unspecific active sites with bovine albumin, an NIR PEC aptasensing system was developed for VEGF165 detection. After being incubated in a mixture of VEGF165, l-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (magnesium salt hydrate) (AAP), and chloroauric acid, the aptamers for VEGF165 were detached from the PEC aptasensing interface, thus resulting in the decrease of the charge-transfer resistance and the increase of the photocurrent response. The shedding of the aptamers also makes the ALP approach the electrode surface, thus catalyzing the reduction of AAP to produce ascorbic acid (AA). Subsequently, AA reduces in situ chloroauric acid to produce AuNPs on the Nd-MOF-based sensing interface. With the excellent conductivity and localized surface plasmon resonance effect, the AuNPs can accelerate the separation of electron-hole pairs generated from Nd-MOF nanorods, thus promoting the photoelectric conversion efficiency and achieving signal amplification. Under optimized conditions, the PEC responses were linearly related to the VEGF165 concentrations in the range of 0.01-100 ng mL^-1 and exhibit a low detection limit of 3.51 pg mL^-1 (S/N = 3). VEGF165 in human serum samples was detected by the NIR PEC aptasensor. Their concentrations were found to be well consistent with that obtained from ELISA. Furthermore, the PEC aptasensor demonstrated recoveries from 96.07 to 103.8%. The relative standard deviations were within 5%, indicating good accuracy and precision. The results further verify its practicability for clinical diagnosis.

Recent progress on MOF-based optical sensors for VOC sensing

The raising apprehension of volatile organic compound (VOC) exposures urges the exploration of advanced monitoring platforms. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide many attractive features including tailorable porosity, high surface areas, good chemical/thermal stability, and various host-guest interactions, making them appealing candidates for VOC capture and sensing. To comprehensively exploit the potential of MOFs as sensing materials, great efforts have been dedicated to the shaping and patterning of MOFs for next-level device integration. Among different types of sensors (chemiresistive sensors, gravimetric sensors, optical sensors, etc.), MOFs coupled with optical sensors feature distinctive strength. This review summarized the latest advancements in MOF-based optical sensors with a particular focus on VOC sensing. The subject is discussed by different mechanisms: colorimetry, luminescence, and sensors based on optical index modulations. Critical analysis for each system highlighting practical aspects was also deliberated.

Cu3(BTC)2 nanoflakes synthesized in an ionic liquid/water binary solvent and their catalytic properties

Low-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit enhanced properties compared with three-dimensional (3D) geometry MOFs in many fields. In this work, we demonstrate the synthesis of Cu₃(BTC)₂ (BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) nanoflakes in a binary solvent of ionic liquid (IL) and water. Such a MOF architecture has a high surface area and abundant unsaturated coordination metal sites, making them attractive for adsorption and catalysis. For example, in catalyzing the oxidation reactions of a series of alcohols, the Cu₃(BTC)₂ nanoflakes exhibit a high performance that is superior to Cu₃(BTC)₂ microparticles synthesized in a conventional solvent. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the IL accelerates the crystallization of Cu₃(BTC)₂, while water plays a role in stripping the Cu₃(BTC)₂ blocks that are formed at an early stage through its attack on the crystal plane of Cu₃(BTC)₂. Such an in situ crystallization-exfoliation process that uses an IL/water solvent opens a new route for producing low-dimensional MOFs.

Exploring the Defect Sites in UiO-66 by Decorating Platinum Nanoparticles for an Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

UiO-66 has been tailored using defect engineering methodology to introduce thiol functionalities into the MOF skeletal structure. The thiolated UiO-66 serves as a scaffold to support the platinum nanoparticles with a size of ∼2 nm through a soft-soft interaction. This Pt@UiO-66-SH, utilized as an HER catalyst, exhibited an overpotential of 57 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in an acidic medium with a Tafel slope of 75 mV/dec and a high TOF value (389.37 s^-1). This catalyst showed long-term durability for 30 h, specifying the potential of the material to produce neat hydrogen.

Atomic-Scale Quantum Sensing of Ensembles of Guest Molecules in a Metal-Organic Framework with Intrinsic Electron Spin Centers

One of the exciting applications of electron-spin-based quantum sensing is the detection of distant nuclear spins of external molecular species. Here, we explore the application of a metal-organic framework (MOF) material as a host matrix for sensing spin centers. As a sensor, we employ inherent Cu²⁺ ions in the structure of a Zn-doped HKUST-1 framework. As a target molecular species, we use butane gas that exhibits no specific chemical reactivity toward the inner surface of HKUST-1 and is thus randomly distributed inside the MOF pore network. By employing a conventional double-resonance pulse sequence, we can effectively detect the coupling of the distant ¹H nuclear spins of butane to the electron spin of the sensor and gain atomic-scale insight into their spatial distribution. Thus, our proof-of-the-concept experiment demonstrates that MOFs, the materials featuring extremely large surface area and great tunability, are perfectly suited as a key element for emerging magnetic quantum sensing solutions.

Linker Functionalization Strategy for Water Adsorption in Metal-Organic Frameworks

Water adsorption in metal-organic frameworks has gained a lot of scientific attention recently due to the potential to be used in adsorption-based water capture. Functionalization of their organic linkers can tune water adsorption properties by increasing the hydrophilicity, thus altering the shape of the water adsorption isotherms and the overall water uptake. In this work, a large set of functional groups is screened for their interaction with water using ab initio calculations. The functional groups with the highest water affinities form two hydrogen bonds with the water molecule, acting as H-bond donor and H-bond acceptor simultaneously. Notably, the highest binding energy was calculated to be -12.7 Kcal/mol for the -OSO₃H group at the RI-MP2/def2-TZVPP-level of theory, which is three times larger than the reference value. Subsequently, the effect of the functionalization strategy on the water uptake is examined on a selected set of functionalized MOF-74-III by performing Monte Carlo simulations. It was found that the specific groups can increase the hydrophilicity of the MOF and enhance the water uptake with respect to the parent MOF-74-III for relative humidity (RH) values up to 30%. The saturation water uptake exceeded 800 cm³/cm³ for all candidates, classifying them among the top performing materials for water harvesting.

Interfacially confined preparation of copper Porphyrin-contained nanofilms towards High-performance Strain-Pressure monitoring

The development of ultrasensitive, durable and anti-jamming strain-pressure sensors that can precisely distinguish different motions or deformations is crucial for health diagnosis and disaster monitoring, but it also remains a challenge. In this study, a self-standing, highly flexible and uniform nanofilm (CuPTFA) was fabricated via interfacial covalent condensation of a copper complex of 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)-porphine tetrahydrizides (Cu-TPPNHNH₂) and tris-(4-formylphenyl)-amine (TFA). The film was used as a sensing layer in a strain-pressure sensor with a sandwich-like structure of Au/I₂@CuPTFA/Au. The sensor had a gauge factor exceeding 10000, a strain range of linear response of 3-7%, reliable output signals after 5000 times of continuous use, and extraordinary noise-screening capability. The strain-pressure sensor can differentiate moderate muscle hyper-spasm from subtle swaying, walking and vigorous sporting activities, with great potential for real-life applications.

Hexagonal Layer Manganese Metal-Organic Framework for Photocatalytic CO2 Cycloaddition Reaction

A novel manganese metal-organic framework (Mn-MOF) termed UAEU-50 assembled from a benzenedicarboxylate linker (BDC) and trinuclear manganese clusters was synthesized and fully characterized using different spectroscopic and analytic techniques (e.g., X-ray powder diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). UAEU-50 adopted a hexagonal layer structure and exhibited superior thermal stability and robust chemical stability. Photocatalytic activities of UAEU-50 were investigated using the cycloaddition of CO₂ to different epoxides, forming cyclic carbonates. Impressively, UAEU-50 can transform up to 90% photocatalytic CO₂ conversion to cyclic carbonates in the visible-light region at ambient conditions.

Metal-Organic Framework Based Gas Sensors

The ever-increasing concerns over indoor/outdoor air quality, industrial gas leakage, food freshness, and medical diagnosis require miniaturized gas sensors with excellent sensitivity, selectivity, stability, low power consumption, cost-effectiveness, and long lifetime. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring structural diversity, large specific surface area, controllable pore size/geometry, and host-guest interactions, hold great promises for fabricating various MOF-based devices for diverse applications including gas sensing. Tremendous progress has been made in the past decade on the fabrication of MOF-based sensors with elevated sensitivity and selectivity toward various analytes due to their preconcentrating and molecule-sieving effects. Although several reviews have recently summarized different aspects of this field, a comprehensive review focusing on MOF-based gas sensors is absent. In this review, the latest advance of MOF-based gas sensors relying on different transduction mechanisms, for example, chemiresistive, capacitive/impedimetric, field-effect transistor or Kelvin probe-based, mass-sensitive, and optical ones are comprehensively summarized. The latest progress for making large-area MOF films essential to the mass-production of relevant gas sensors is also included. The structural and compositional features of MOFs are intentionally correlated with the sensing performance. Challenges and opportunities for the further development and practical applications of MOF-based gas sensors are also given.

Recent Advances in Phthalocyanine and Porphyrin-Based Materials as Active Layers for Nitric Oxide Chemical Sensors

Nitric oxide (NO) is a highly reactive toxic gas that forms as an intermediate compound during the oxidation of ammonia and is used for the manufacture of hydroxylamine in the chemical industry. Moreover, NO is a signaling molecule in many physiological and pathological processes in mammals, as well as a biomarker indicating the course of inflammatory processes in the respiratory tract. For this reason, the detection of NO both in the gas phase and in the aqueous media is an important task. This review analyzes the state of research over the past ten years in the field of applications of phthalocyanines, porphyrins and their hybrid materials as active layers of chemical sensors for the detection of NO, with a primary focus on chemiresistive and electrochemical ones. The first part of the review is devoted to the study of phthalocyanines and porphyrins, as well as their hybrids for the NO detection in aqueous solutions and biological media. The second part presents an analysis of works describing the latest achievements in the field of studied materials as active layers of sensors for the determination of gaseous NO. It is expected that this review will further increase the interest of researchers who are engaged in the current level of evaluation and selection of modern materials for use in the chemical sensing of nitric oxide.

PoreMatMod.jl: Julia Package for in Silico Postsynthetic Modification of Crystal Structure Models

PoreMatMod.jl is a free, open-source, user-friendly, and documented Julia package for modifying crystal structure models of porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). PoreMatMod.jl functions as a find-and-replace algorithm on crystal structures by leveraging (i) Ullmann's algorithm to search for subgraphs of the crystal structure graph that are isomorphic to the graph of a query fragment and (ii) the orthogonal Procrustes algorithm to align a replacement fragment with a targeted substructure of the crystal structure for installation. The prominent application of PoreMatMod.jl is to generate libraries of hypothetical structures for virtual screenings. For example, one can install functional groups on the linkers of a parent MOF, mimicking postsynthetic modification. Other applications of PoreMatMod.jl to modify crystal structure models include introducing defects with precision and correcting artifacts of X-ray structure determination (adding missing hydrogen atoms, resolving disorder, and removing guest molecules). The find-and-replace operations implemented by PoreMatMod.jl can be applied broadly to diverse atomistic systems for various in silico structural modification tasks.

Emerging MXene@Metal-Organic Framework Hybrids: Design Strategies toward Versatile Applications

Rapid progress on developing smart materials and design of hybrids is motivated by pressing challenges associated with energy crisis and environmental remediation. While emergence of versatile classes of nanomaterials has been fascinating, the real excitement lies in the design of hybrid materials with tunable properties. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are the key materials for gas sorption and electrochemical applications, but their sustainability is challenged by limited chemical stability, poor electrical conductivity, and intricate, inaccessible pores. Despite tremendous efforts towards improving the stability of MOF materials, little progress has made researchers inclined toward developing hybrid materials. MXenes, a family of two-dimensional transition-metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides, are known for their compositional versatility and formation of a range of structures with rich surface chemistry. Hybridization of MOFs with functional layered MXene materials may be beneficial if the host structure provides appropriate interactions for stabilizing and improving the desired properties. Recent efforts have focused on integrating Ti₃C₂T_x and V₂CT_x MXenes with MOFs to result in hybrid materials with augmented electrochemical and physicochemical properties, widening the scope for emerging applications. This review discusses the potential design strategies of MXene@MOF hybrids, attributes of tunable properties in the resulting hybrids, and their applications in water treatment, sensing, electrochemical energy storage, smart textiles, and electrocatalysis. Comprehensive discussions on the recent efforts on rapidly evolving MXene@MOF materials for various applications and potential future directions are highlighted.

Recent development of metal-organic framework nanocomposites for biomedical applications

Albeit metal-organic framework (MOF) composites have been extensively explored, reducing the size and dimensions of various contents within the composition, to the nanoscale regime, has recently presented unique opportunities for enhanced properties with the formation of MOF-based nanocomposites. Many distinctive strategies have been used to fabricate these nanocomposites such as through the introduction of nanoparticles (NPs) into a MOF precursor solution or vice versa to achieve a core-shell or heterostructure configuration. As such, MOF-based nanocomposites offer seemingly limitless possibilities and promising solutions for the vast range of applications across biomedical disciplines especially for improving in vivo implementation. In this review, we focus on the recent development of MOF-based nanocomposites, outline their classification according to the type of integrations (NPs, coating materials, and different MOF-derived nanocomposites), and direct special attention towards the various approaches and strategies employed to construct these nanocomposites for their prospective utilization in biomedical applications including biomimetic enzymes and photo, chemo, sonodynamic, starvation and hyperthermia therapies. Lastly, our work aims to highlight the exciting potential as well as the challenges of MOF-based nanocomposites to help guide future research as well as to contribute to the progress of MOF-based nanotechnology in biomedicine.

Metal-Organic-Framework- and MXene-Based Taste Sensors and Glucose Detection

Taste sensors can identify various tastes, including saltiness, bitterness, sweetness, sourness, and umami, and have been useful in the food and beverage industry. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MXenes have recently received considerable attention for the fabrication of high-performance biosensors owing to their large surface area, high ion transfer ability, adjustable chemical structure. Notably, MOFs with large surface areas, tunable chemical structures, and high stability have been explored in various applications, whereas MXenes with good conductivity, excellent ion-transport characteristics, and ease of modification have exhibited great potential in biochemical sensing. This review first outlines the importance of taste sensors, their operation mechanism, and measuring methods in sensing utilization. Then, recent studies focusing on MOFs and MXenes for the detection of different tastes are discussed. Finally, future directions for biomimetic tongues based on MOFs and MXenes are discussed.

Metal-organic frameworks for chemical sensing devices

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are exceptionally large surface area materials with organized porous cages that have been investigated for nearly three decades. Due to the flexibility in their design and predisposition toward functionalization, they have shown promise in many areas of application, including chemical sensing. Consequently, they are identified as advanced materials with potential for deployment in analytical devices for chemical and biochemical sensing applications, where high sensitivity is desirable, for example, in environmental monitoring and to advance personal diagnostics. To keep abreast of new research, which signposts the future directions in the development of MOF-based chemical sensors, this review examines studies since 2015 that focus on the applications of MOF films and devices in chemical sensing. Various examples that use MOF films in solid-state sensing applications were drawn from recent studies based on electronic, electrochemical, electromechanical and optical sensing methods. These examples underscore the readiness of MOFs to be integrated in optical and electronic analytical devices. Also, preliminary demonstrations of future sensors are indicated in the performances of MOF-based wearables and smartphone sensors. This review will inspire collaborative efforts between scientists and engineers working within the field of MOFs, leading to greater innovations and accelerating the development of MOF-based analytical devices for chemical and biochemical sensing applications.

Gas sensing materials roadmap

Gas sensor technology is widely utilized in various areas ranging from home security, environment and air pollution, to industrial production. It also hold great promise in non-invasive exhaled breath detection and an essential device in future internet of things. The past decade has witnessed giant advance in both fundamental research and industrial development of gas sensors, yet current efforts are being explored to achieve better selectivity, higher sensitivity and lower power consumption. The sensing layer in gas sensors have attracted dominant attention in the past research. In addition to the conventional metal oxide semiconductors, emerging nanocomposites and graphene-like two-dimensional materials also have drawn considerable research interest. This inspires us to organize this comprehensive 2020 gas sensing materials roadmap to discuss the current status, state-of-the-art progress, and present and future challenges in various materials that is potentially useful for gas sensors.
