Self-Catalyzed Hydrogenated Carbon Nano-Onions Facilitates Mild Synthesis of Transparent Nano-Polycrystalline Diamond

Transparent nano-polycrystalline diamond (t-NPD) possesses superior mechanical properties compared to single and traditional polycrystalline diamonds. However, the harsh synthetic conditions significantly limit its synthesis and applications. In this study, a synthesis routine is presented for t-NPD under low pressure and low temperature conditions, 10 GPa, 1600 °C and 15 GPa, 1350 °C similar with the synthesis condition of organic precursor. Self-catalyzed hydrogenated carbon nano-onions (HCNOs) from the combustion of naphthalene enable synthesis under nearly industrial conditions, which are like organic precursor and much lower than that of graphite and other carbon allotropes. This is made possible thanks to the significant impact of hydrogen on the thermodynamics, as it chemically facilitates phase transition. Ubiquitous nanotwinned structures are observed throughout t-NPD due to the high concentration of puckered layers and stacking faults of HCNOs, which impart a Vickers hardness about 140 GPa. This high hardness and optical transparency can be attributed to the nanocrystalline grain size, thin intergranular films, absence of secondary phase and pore-free features. The facile and industrial-scale synthesis of the HCNOs precursor, and mild synthesis conditions make t-NPD suitable for a wide range of potential applications.

Self-Catalysis Transformation of Metal-Organic Coordination Polymers

Designing a multidimensional transformation of metal-organic coordination polymers (MOPs) is highly attractive yet very challenging. Herein, by combining the dynamicity of the coordination bond with the controllability of the chemical reaction, the concept of self-catalysis transformation of MOPs is first proposed. It uses the metal in MOPs as the catalyst to catalyze the chemical reaction of the ligand in the frameworks, simultaneously changing the coordination environment of the metal and the structure of the ligand, resulting in the controllable multidimensional transformation in the morphology and structure of MOPs. The self-catalysis transformation of MOPs can be triggered by heat or light, and crystals with various morphologies and structures can be obtained. Significantly, because the self-catalysis reaction is constraint in the framework, the products at different transformation processes are relatively stable. Monitoring and characterizing the transformation of MOPs give evidences for the exploration of the self-catalysis reaction, and a plausible transformation mechanism is proposed and proved. It can be foreseen that this novel self-catalysis transformation strategy might open up a new direction for the diverse development of MOPs and provide a powerful tool for the study of organic reaction mechanism.

Multifunctional MXene Conductive Zwitterionic Hydrogel for Flexible Wearable Sensors and Arrays

Conductive hydrogels have good prospects in the fields of flexible electronic devices and artificial intelligence due to their biocompatibility, durability, and functional diversity. However, the process of hydrogel polymerization is time-consuming and energy-consuming, and freezing at zero temperature is inevitable, which seriously hinders its applications and working life. Herein, zwitterionic conductive hydrogels with self-adhesive and antifreeze properties were prepared in one minute by introducing two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanosheets into the autocatalytically enhanced system composed of tannic acid-modified cellulose nanofibers and zinc chloride. The system has strong environmental applicability (-60 to 40 °C), good stretchability (ductility ≈ 980%), durable adhesion (even after 30 days of exposure to air), and strong electrical conductivity (20 °C, 30 mS cm^-1). By virtue of these advantages, the prepared zwitterionic hydrogels can be developed into flexible strain sensors to monitor large human movements and subtle physiological signals over a wide temperature range and to capture signals from handwriting and voice recognition. In addition, multiple flexible sensors can be assembled into a three-dimensional (3D) array, which can detect the magnitude and spatial distribution of strain or force. These results demonstrate that the prepared zwitterionic hydrogels have promising applications in the fields of medical monitoring and artificial intelligence.

Self-Catalytic Ternary Compounds for Efficient Synthesis of High-Quality Boron Nitride Nanotubes

The large-scale synthesis of high-quality boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) has attracted considerable interests due to their applications in nanocomposites, thermal management, and so on. Despite decades of development, efficient preparation of high-quality BNNTs, which relies on the effective design of precursors and catalysts and deep insights into the catalytic mechanisms, is still urgently needed. Here, a self-catalytic process is designed to grow high-quality BNNTs using ternary W-B-Li compounds. W-B-Li compounds provide boron source and catalyst for BNNTs growth. High-quality BNNTs are successfully obtained via this approach. Density functional theory-based molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) simulations demonstrate that the Li intercalation into the lattice of W₂ B₅ promotes the formation of W-B-Li liquid and facilitates the compound evaporation for efficient BNNTs growth. This work demonstrates a high-efficient self-catalytic growth of high-quality BNNTs via ternary W-B-Li compounds, providing a new understanding of high-quality BNNTs growth.

Self-Catalytic Small Interfering RNA Nanocarriers for Synergistic Treatment of Neurodegenerative Diseases

Gene therapy has shown great potential for neurodegenerative diseases with complex pathology. However, its therapeutic effect is limited due to the delivery barriers and its own single function. Herein, self-catalytic small interfering RNA (siRNA) nanocarriers (S/Ce-PABMS) are developed to catalyze delivery process and treatment process for synergistic treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. On the one hand, the rough surface of the S/Ce-PABMS mediated by ceria (CeO₂ ) nanozymes can catalyze cellular uptake in the delivery process, so that S/Ce-PABMS with acetylcholine analogs penetrate the blood-brain barrier and enter neurons more effectively. On the other hand, the CeO₂ nanozymes can catalyze the treatment process by scavenging excess reactive oxygen species, and cooperate with siRNA-targeting SNCA to decrease the α-synuclein (α-syn) aggregation and alleviate the Parkinsonian pathology. Moreover, the S/Ce-PABMS treatment reduces the number of activated microglia and regulates the release of inflammatory cytokine, thereby relieving neuroinflammation. After treatment with S/Ce-PABMS, dyskinesia in Parkinson's disease model mice is significantly alleviated. The finding shows that the self-catalytic nanocarriers, S/Ce-PABMS, have great potential in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Engineering Self-Adhesive Polyzwitterionic Hydrogel Electrolytes for Flexible Zinc-Ion Hybrid Capacitors with Superior Low-Temperature Adaptability

Flexible zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs) based on hydrogel electrolytes are an up-and-coming and highly promising candidate for potential large-scale energy storage due to their combined complementary advantages of zinc batteries and capacitors. However, the freezing induces a sharp drop in conductivity and mechanical property with tremendous compromise of the interfacial adhesion, thereby severely impeding the low-temperature application of such flexible ZIHCs. To achieve the flexible ZIHCs with excellent low-temperature adaptability, an antifreezing and self-adhesive polyzwitterionic hydrogel electrolyte (PZHE) is engineered via a self-catalytic nano-reinforced strategy, affording unparalleled conductivity and robust interfacial adhesion, together with superhigh mechanical strength over a broad temperature ranging from 25 to -60 °C. Meanwhile, the water-in-salt-type PZHE filled with ZnCl₂ can provide ion migration channels to enhance the reversibility of Zn metal electrodes, thus greatly reducing side reactions and extending the cycling life. With distinctive integrated merits of the water-in-salt type PZHE, the as-built ZIHCs deliver a high-level energy density of 80.5 Wh kg^-1, a desired specific capacity of 81.5 mAh g^-1, along with a long-duration cycling lifespan (100 000 cycles) with 84.6% capacity retention at -40 °C, even outperforming the state-of-the-art ZIHCs at room temperature. More encouragingly, the extraordinary temperature-adaptability for both electrochemical and mechanical performance under severe mechanical challenges is achieved for the flexible ZIHCs at extremely low temperature. Noticeably, the ZIHC is also capable of operating in an ice-water bath and vacuum. It is believed that this strategy makes contributions to inspire the design and application of high-performance PZHEs in fields of flexible and wearable electronics that can work in extremely cold environments.

Carry-On Nitric-Oxide Luggage for Enhanced Chemotherapeutic Efficacy

In this work, we proposed a carry-on nitric-oxide (NO) luggage strategy for enhanced chemotherapeutic efficacy. A stimuli-responsive NO-releasing polypeptide was prepared as the building block to assemble into a micelle as a chemodrug-carrier. The micelle was anchored with cRGD peptide with the aim of targeting to tumors' neoangiogenesis. In situ generation of NO at the tumor site can promote the neovascularization to recruit more chemotherapeutics. Besides, the introduced exogenous NO can directly induce apoptosis, synergistically with the chemotherapeutics. A specific near-infrared-region (NIR) NO-probe was also developed to be coloaded to the micelle to report the in situ NO-release. In vitro and in vivo experiments were performed to demonstrate the targeting capability, increased accumulation, real-time NO-release reporting phenomenon, improved antitumor efficacy, and favorable biosafety. Embedding NO into drug cargo as carry-on luggage for enhanced chemotherapeutic efficacy, hopefully, can cast new lights and build a basic principle in the future clinical translation of nanomedicines.

Part II: Self-Catalysis of 2-Diethylaminoethyl-Modified Sensor Matrix for Improvement of Sensitivity

A nylon 6 nanofibrous membrane (N6NFM) was covalently modified with 2-diethylaminoethylchloride (DEAE-Cl) to provide self-catalytic functions to facilitate the formation of color compounds in reactions of 4-( p-nitrobenzyl)pyridine with alkylating fumigants. The 2-diethylaminoethyl group on the DEAE-Cl-modified N6NFM (DEAE@N6NFM) enables effective elimination of hydrohalogenic acids from intermediates that were formed from reactions between the alkylating fumigants and NBP and consequently improve their detection sensitivities, especially for 1,3-dichloropropene at room temperature. Moreover, DEAE@N6NFM can be recycled and reused multiple times without obvious loss in the sensing functions or any noticeable material damage. The naked-eye detection limits of the sensor to 1,3-dichloropropene, methyl iodide, and methyl bromide on DEAE@N6NFM are improved to 0.2, 0.1, and 0.1 ppm, respectively, which are much lower than their occupational exposure limits. The reaction mechanism is demonstrated through a computational method by analyzing the thermodynamics of the reaction. The modification of DEAE@N6NFM also provides an insight into the development of functionalized materials with improved reactivities for versatile sensing applications.

Self-Activated Healable Hydrogels with Reversible Temperature Responsiveness

The self-healable polymer hydrogel along with reversible temperature responsiveness was prepared through self-catalyzed dynamic acylhydrazone formation and exchange without any additional stimulus or catalyst. The hydrogel was prepared from a copolymer of N-isopropylacrylamide and acylhydrazine P(NIPAM-co-AH) cross-linked by PEO dialdehyde. Besides self-healed under catalysis of acid and aniline, the hydrogel can also self-heal activated by excess of acylhydrazine groups. Without interference of catalyst during the hydrogel formation and self-healing, this kind of hydrogel prepared from biocompatible polymers can be used in more areas including biotechnology and be more persistent. The hydrogel with a large part of the PNIPAM segment also showed temperature responsiveness around body temperature influenced by the variation in group ratio. This self-healable hydrogel has great potential application in areas related to bioscience and biotechnology.

Cross-Aldol Reaction of Isatin with Acetone Catalyzed by Leucinol: A Mechanistic Investigation

Comprehensive mechanistic studies on the enantioselective aldol reaction between isatin (1 a) and acetone, catalyzed by L-leucinol (3 a), unraveled that isatin, apart from being a substrate, also plays an active catalytic role. Conversion of the intermediate oxazolidine 4 into the reactive syn-enamine 6, catalyzed by isatin, was identified as the rate-determining step by both the calculations (ΔG(≠) =26.1 kcal mol(-1) for the analogous L-alaninol, 3 b) and the kinetic isotope effect (kH /kD =2.7 observed for the reaction using [D6 ]acetone). The subsequent reaction of the syn-enamine 6 with isatin produces (S)-2 a (calculated ΔG(≠) =11.6 kcal mol(-1) ). The calculations suggest that the overall stereochemistry is controlled by two key events: 1) the isatin-catalyzed formation of the syn-enamine 6, which is thermodynamically favored over its anti-rotamer 7 by 2.3 kcal mol(-1) ; and 2) the high preference of the syn-enamine 6 to produce (S)-2 a on reaction with isatin (1 a) rather than its enantiomer (ΔΔG(≠) =2.6 kcal mol(-1) ).
