Self‐Healing Supramolecular Materials Constructed by Copolymerization via Molecular Recognition of Cavitand‐Based Coordination Capsules

Metal Ions Trigger the Gelation of Cysteine-Containing Peptide-Appended Coordination Cages

We report a series of coordination cages that incorporate peptide chains at their vertices, prepared through subcomponent self-assembly. Three distinct heterochiral tripeptide subcomponents were incorporated, each exhibiting an L-D-L stereoconfiguration. Through this approach, we prepared and characterized three tetrahedral metal-peptide cages that incorporate thiol and methylthio groups. The gelation of these cages was probed through the binding of additional metal ions, with the metal-peptide cages acting as junctions, owing to the presence of sulfur atoms on the peripheral peptides. Gels were obtained with cages bearing cysteine at the C-terminus. Our strategy for developing functional metal-coordinated supramolecular gels with a modular design may result in the development of materials useful for chemical separations or drug delivery.

Supramolecular Synthesis of Star Polymers

Supramolecular polymers, in which monomers are assembled via intermolecular interactions, have been extensively studied. The fusion of supramolecular polymers with conventional polymers has attracted the attention of many researchers. In this review article, the recent progress in the construction of supramolecular star polymers, including regular star polymers and miktoarm star polymers, is discussed. The initial sections briefly provide an overview of the conventional classification and synthesis methods for star polymers. Coordination-driven self-assembly was investigated for the supramolecular synthesis of star polymers. Star polymers with multiple polymer chains radiating from metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) have also been described. Particular focus has been placed on the synthesis of star polymers featuring supramolecular cores formed through hydrogen-bonding-directed self-assembly. After describing the synthesis of star polymers based on host-guest complexes, the construction of miktoarm star polymers based on the molecular recognition of coordination capsules is detailed.

Molecular Recognition Process in Resorcinarene-based Coordination Capsules

Cu and Ag capsules can take up various organic molecules. Their molecular recognition possibly involves partial dissociation and slippage. We investigated molecular recognition processes in the Cu and Ag capsules by CD and 1 H NMR spectroscopy and employed 4,4'-diacetoxy biphenyl carrying two benzothiadiazole groups as a probe. CD and 1 H NMR measurements reveal that the host-guest complexation proceeds under second-order reactions and that these capsules undergo the partial dissociation to take up the probe in [D1 ]chloroform and [D8 ]THF. The slippage also contributes to host-guest complexation for a Cu capsule that carries p-methoxyphenyl groups on the 2,2'-bipyridiyl arms. DFT calculations suggest that π/π stacking interactions between the electron-rich p-methoxyphenyl group and the electron-poor 2,2'-bipyridyl arm elongate the capsule, allowing the guest to access the cavity without the partial dissociation.

Synthesis of Supramolecular A8 Bn Miktoarm Star Copolymers by Host-Guest Complexation

We report a new synthetic method to construct supramolecular A₈ B_n (n=1, 2, 4) miktoarm star copolymers by host-guest complexation between a resorcinarene-based coordination capsule possessing eight polystyrene chains and 4,4-diacetoxybiphenyl guest molecules that retain one, two or four polymethyl acrylate chains. The formation of the supramolecular A₈ B_n (n=1, 2, 4) miktoarm star copolymers was confirmed by dynamic light scattering (DLS), size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), and diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements revealed that the miktoarm copolymers were phase-separated in the bulk. The micro-Brownian motion of the A₈ B₄ structure was markedly enhanced in the bulk due to a weak segregation interaction between the immiscible arms.

Supramolecular Ensembles Formed via Calix[5]arene-Fullerene Host-Guest Interactions

This minireview introduces the research directions for the synthesis of supramolecular fullerene polymers. First, the discovery of host-guest complexes of pristine fullerenes is briefed. We focus on progress in supramolecular fullerene polymers directed by the use of calix[5]arene-fullerene interactions, which comprise linear, networked, helical arrays of fullerenes in supramolecular ensembles. The unique self-sorting behavior of right-handed and left-handed helical supramolecular fullerene arrays is discussed. Thereafter, an extensive investigation of the calix[5]arene-fullerene interaction for control over the chain structures of covalent polymers is introduced.

Control of Extrinsic Porosities in Linked Metal-Organic Polyhedra Gels by Imparting Coordination-Driven Self-Assembly with Electrostatic Repulsion

The linkage of metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) to synthesize porous soft materials is one of the promising strategies to combine processability with permanent porosity. Compared to the defined internal cavity of MOPs, it is still difficult to control the extrinsic porosities generated between crosslinked MOPs because of their random arrangements in the networks. Herein, we report a method to form linked MOP gels with controllable extrinsic porosities by introducing negative charges on the surface of MOPs that facilitates electrostatic repulsion between them. A hydrophilic rhodium-based cuboctahedral MOP (OHRhMOP) with 24 hydroxyl groups on its outer periphery can be controllably deprotonated to impart the MOP with tunable electrostatic repulsion in solution. This electrostatic repulsion between MOPs stabilizes the kinetically trapped state, in which an MOP is coordinated with various bisimidazole linkers in a monodentate fashion at a controllable linker/MOP ratio. Heating of the kinetically trapped molecules leads to the formation of gels with similar colloidal networks but different extrinsic porosities. This strategy allows us to design the molecular-level networks and the resulting porosities even in the amorphous state.

"Self-Adaptive" Coassembly of Colloidal "Saturn-like" Host-Guest Complexes Enabled by Toroidal Micellar Rubber Bands

The creation of inclusion complexes with "Saturn-like" geometries has attracted increasing attention for supramolecular systems, but expansion of the concept to nanoscale colloidal systems remains a challenge. Here, we report a strategy to assemble toroidal polyisoprene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PI-b-P2VP) block copolymer micelles with a PI core and a P2VP corona and inorganic (e.g., silica) nanoparticles of variable shape and dimensions into "Saturn-like" constructs with high fidelity and yield. The precise nesting of the nanoparticles between the toroidal building units is realized by virtue of hydrogen bonding and self-adaptive expansion of the flexible toroidal units enabled by a flexible, low T_g PI core. Once the toroidal units are cross-linked, the self-adaptive feature is lost and coassembly yields instead out-of-cavity bound nanoparticles. "Saturn-like" assemblies can also be formed along silica nanosphere-decorated cylindrical micelles or, alternatively, at the hydroxyl-functionalized termini of cylindrical micelles to yield colloidal [3]rotaxanes.

Pyrrolidinyl ligand motif-assisted bovine serum albumin molecularly imprinted polymers with high specificity

Ideal binding ligands for anchoring proteins are essential for the design and assembly of desirable molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). In this study, bovine serum albumin-MIPs (BSA-MIPs) were successfully prepared by orchestrating the involvement of orientation-controllable binding ligands via sequential thiol-ene click and thiol-ene-amine conjugation. We showed that the optimal thiol-ene-amine conjugates and binding ligands were decisive in determining the rebinding capacity and selectivity. The pyrrolidinyl MIPs exhibited the best adsorption capacity of 352 ± 22 mg/g and a superior imprinting factor of 4.72 among MIPs with various binding ligands. These favourable results were further studied by computational simulation and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). Molecular docking revealed the preferential binding free energy and H-bonds between BSA residues and the thiol-ene-amine conjugates. Meanwhile, the pyrrolidinyl ligand motif enabled entropy-favourable affinity to be achieved via hydrophobic effects with the BSA template by ITC thermodynamics. Because of these favourable bindings, the MIPs exhibited excellent adsorption specificity to BSA over competing proteins. The proof-of-concept of MIPs with orientation-controllable conjugates and proven binding ligands for target proteins demonstrates that this material is promising for use with a real biological sample.

Assembly of Hexagonal Column Interpenetrated Spheres from Plant Polyphenol/Cationic Surfactants and Their Application as Antimicrobial Molecular Banks

Microbial infections has become a great threat to human health and one of the main risks arises from direct contact with the surfaces contaminated by pathogenic microbes. Developing long-lasting antimicrobial materials becomes an urgent need. Herein, a kind of hexagonal column interpenetrated spheres (HCISs) are fabricated by non-covalent assembly of plant gallic acid with quaternary ammonium surfactants. Different from one-time burst release of conventional antimicrobial agents, the HCIS acts like a "antimicrobial molecular bank" and releases the antimicrobial ingredients in a multistage way, leading to long-lasting antimicrobial performance. Taking advantage of strong hydrophobicity and adhesion, HCISs are applicable to various substrates and endowed with anti-water washing property, thus showing high in vitro antimicrobial efficiency ( > 99 %) even after being used for 10 cycles. Meanwhile, HCISs exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi, and have good biocompatibility with mammalian cells. Such a low-cost and portable long-lasting antimicrobial agent meets the growing anti-infection demand in public spaces.

Resorcinarene-Based Supramolecular Capsules: Supramolecular Functions and Applications

A resorcinarene is a synthetic macrocycle consisting of four resorcinol molecules covalently linked by methylene bridges. The interannular bridges produce a cavitand that has a bowl-shaped structure. We have developed supramolecular capsules through Ag(I) or Cu(I) coordination-driven self-assembly of cavitands possessing 2,2′-bipyridyl arms in their upper rims. The self-assembled capsules accommodate various molecular guests and supramolecular assemblies possessing acetoxy groups. The host–guest chemistry of the molecular capsules has been applied in the fabrication of supramolecular polymers. This account describes recent developments in the supramolecular chemistry of resorcinarene-based coordination capsules and provides a brief history of resorcinarene-based capsules and related capsules.

Single-Photon Near-Infrared-Responsiveness from the Molecular to the Supramolecular Level via Platination of Pentacenes

Near-infrared (NIR) responsiveness is important for various applications. Currently, single-photon NIR-responsive systems are rare compared to systems that display two-photon absorption and triplet-triplet annihilation processes. Supramolecular stacking of photo-responsive chromophores results in decreased efficiency due to space-confinement effects. Herein we show that σ-platination of pentacenes is a feasible protocol to build single-photon NIR-responsive systems, with advantages including a low HOMO-LUMO energy gap, high photochemical efficiency, and pathway specificity. The pentacene-to-endoperoxidation transformation is accompanied by color and absorbance changes. The high photo-oxygenation efficiency of σ-platinated pentacenes facilitates NIR responsiveness in one-dimensional supramolecular polymers, resulting in the disappearance of supramolecular chirality signals and disruption of self-assembled nanofibers. Overall, the σ-platination strategy opens up new avenues toward NIR photo-responsive materials at the molecular and supramolecular levels.

An Extremely Stretchable and Self-Healable Supramolecular Polymer Network

The construction of a single polymer network with extreme stretchability, relatively high mechanical strength, and fast and facile autonomous room-temperature self-healing capability still remains a challenge. Herein, supramolecular polymer networks are fabricated by synergistically incorporating metal-ligand and hydrogen bonds in poly(propylene glycol) (PPG). The representative specimen, PPG-Im-MDA-1.5-0.25-Cu, shows a combination of notable mechanical properties involving an extreme stretching ratio of 346 ± 14× and a Young's modulus of 2.10 ± 0.14 MPa, which are superior to the previously reported extremely stretchable polymeric materials. Notably, the destroyed specimen can fully recover mechanical performances within 1 h. The tunability of mechanical properties and self-healing capability has been actualized by merely tailoring the content of a chain extender. The application of the as-prepared supramolecular PPG network in constructing a flexible and self-healable conductor has been demonstrated. This strategy provides some insights for preparing extremely stretchable and self-healable polymeric materials.

Hierarchical self-assembly and controlled disassembly of a cavitand-based host–guest supramolecular polymer

Two hierarchical aggregation modes of cavitand-based supramolecular polymers allow implementing orthogonal disassembly procedures: electrochemical reduction for linear chains and solvent-driven dissolution for bundles.

Polymerization of a biscalix[5]arene derivative

Recent decades have seen an increased interest in the preparation of polymers possessing host or guest moieties as the end group, which has enabled new polymeric materials such as self-healable, shape-memory, and stimuli-responsive materials. Such polymers are commonly synthesized by tethering the host or guest moieties to polymers. On the other hand, there are limited reports demonstrating the preparation of host- or guest-appended polymers by directly polymerizing the corresponding host- or guest-appended monomers, which is valuable for easy access to diverse polymers from single molecular species. However, reactive host and/or guest moieties of the monomer interfere with the polymerization reaction. Here, we report that a biscalix[5]arene host-appended molecule can be polymerized with various monomers to form the corresponding host-appended polymers. The host–guest complexation behavior of calix[5]arene-appended polymers with fullerene derivatives was studied by ¹H NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopic techniques, which revealed that the long polymer chains did not prevent host–guest complexation even when the fullerene derivative was equipped with a polymer chain. Thus, the present study shows the potential for developing polymers that have various combinations of polymer chains.

A calix[5]arene appended monomer molecule was subjected to polymerization reaction to yield corresponding methacrylate polymers. The calix[5]arene appended polymers showed excellent encapsulation capability for fullerene molecules.
