Synthesis of Single Isomeric Complexes with Dissymmetric Structures Using Macrocyclic Homooligomers

Formation of a Metallomacrocycle Possessing Nitrogen Donors Assembled in the Cavity and Unique Water Clusters

2,2'-Bipyridyl (bpy) is widely used as a chelating unit for metal complexation but is not usually considered as a hydrogen-bonding unit. This is because the metal-free bpy units are usually in a transoid conformation, and the two nitrogen lone pairs are pointed to the opposite sides. We now report a metallomacrocycle whose three metal-free bpy units are in a cisoid conformation and are fixed in the cavity. The complexation of nickel(II) only at the salen units of the triangular bpytrisalen ligand produced this rigid and planar macrocycle. Its cavity is surrounded by hydrogen-bond acceptors (N of bpy and O of salen), and it was found that unique pentagonal prism clusters of water molecules templated by the cavity were formed in the crystal. This study has not only increased the variation of the synthetic methodologies of multinuclear complexes but has also provided the structural platform on which multiple bpy units exert hydrogen-bonding functions.

Synthesis of a macrocyclic oligomer of pyridylbenzoxazole utilizing dynamic covalent bonds and its unsymmetric conversion

A new unsymmetric macrocycle was synthesized by an effective and high yield 3-step synthesis, which was composed of macrocyclization, irreversible conversion, and desymmetrization. The dynamic nature of imine bonds as well as selective conversion based on strain release were utilized. Moreover, the unsymmetric macrocycle formed an interesting bivalve-like 2 : 1 complex with zinc.

Site-Selective Ligand Bridging among Multiple Internal Coordination Sites of a Metallomacrocycle and Its Conformational Regulation

Metallomacrocycles with internal coordination sites have a high potential to precisely control the positions of the guest ligands and the overall shape of the assemblies by utilizing the directionality and reversibility of the coordination bonds. However, when such coordinative hosts possess multiple coordination sites, it was difficult to control to which coordination sites the incoming guest ligands bind, because such systems often result in a random, uncontrolled mixture. The metallomacrocycle that we now report, a hexanuclear palladium complex of hexapap possessing six internal coordination sites, can take two different conformations depending on the guests. One is an Alternate conformation, in which six coordination sites of pap alternatively point to Up-Down-Up-Down-Up-Down. The other is a Twisted conformation, in which the coordination sites direct Up-Middle-Down-Up-Middle-Down. Interestingly, linear ditopic α,ω-diamines are captured in three distinct cross-linking modes, and regulations between the two macrocyclic conformations have been realized by the lengths of the diamines. Furthermore, the heteroleptic site-selective bridging of two kinds of diamines has been achieved. It has been demonstrated that a slight difference in the diamine lengths leads to a significant change in the structure and selection of the produced host-guest macrocyclic complexes.

Synergistic Effect of Chiral Nanofibers Amplifying the Orbit Angular Momentum To Enhance Optomagnetic Coupling

Manipulating magnetic bits by photon in spintronics, opto-magnetic coupling, is lagging far behind what we could expect. To investigate the issue, one should face the problem to find photon dependence of spin dynamics and spin manipulation. In this work, through introducing chiral orbit in organic crystals, circularly polarized photon can manipulate spin via the channel of photon-orbit-spin interactions. Under the stimulus of the magnetic field, strong spin polarization will feed back to the change in polarized state of light. Moreover, twisting several chiral nanofibers into a thick one, a more pronounced opto-magnetic coupling is clearly observed due to the chirality generated larger chiral orbit. Meanwhile, spin dynamics (or spin response times) inside the aggregated thick chiral fiber can be further tuned by circularly polarized light. Hopefully, this study can deepen the understanding of organic chiral spin-photonics and enhance the application of organic functional crystals in the future.

Cyclodextrins with Multiple Pyrenyl Groups: An Approach to Organic Molecules Exhibiting Bright Excimer Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has attracted much attention because of its potential for electronic and biological applications. Herein, we report a simple and effective approach to organic molecules exhibiting bright CPL by combining a chiral cyclic molecular scaffold and multiple excimer-enabling moieties. An a-cyclodextrin ( CyD ) scaffold was modified with six pyrenyl groups to obtain pyrene-cyclodextrins ( PCD s) in a one-step synthesis from commercially available compounds. The PCDs exhibited high molar extinction coefficients (ε ~ 10 5 M -1 cm -1 ), polarized emission with a good dissymmetry factor (| g lum | ~ 10 -2 ), and quantum yield ( Φ f ~ 0.5). Owing to the excellent photophysical properties of the PCDs, the circularly polarized luminescence brightness ( B CPL ) reached 340 M -1 cm -1 . Comprehensive photophysical and chiroptical studies of the PCD s with only five pyrene units and with linkers of various lengths connecting the CyD with the pyrene units revealed that the formation of a pyrene excimer in a spatially crowded environment is crucial for CPL anisotropy. This study paves the way for the development of bright CPL organic molecules.

Enantioselective Construction of Modular and Asymmetric Baskets

The precise positioning of functional groups about the inner space of abiotic hosts is a challenging task and of interest for developing more effective receptors and catalysts akin to those found in nature. To address it, we herein report a synthetic methodology for preparing basket-like cavitands comprised of three different aromatics as side arms with orthogonal esters at the rim for further functionalization. First, enantioenriched A (borochloronorbornene), B (iodobromonorbornene), and C (boronorbornene) building blocks were obtained by stereoselective syntheses. Second, consecutive A-to-B and then AB-to-C Suzuki-Miyaura (SM) couplings were optimized to give enantioenriched ABC cavitand as the principal product. The robust synthetic protocol allowed us to prepare (a) an enantioenriched basket with three benzene sides and each holding either tBu, Et, or Me esters, (b) both enantiomers of a so-called "spiral staircase" basket with benzene, naphthalene, and anthracene groups surrounding the inner space, and (c) a photo-responsive basket bearing one anthracene and two benzene arms.

Solvent-dependent fac/mer-isomerization and self-assembly of triply helical complexes bearing a pivot part

Tris-chelate metal complexes of unsymmetrical bidentate ligands can form two geometric stereoisomers, facial (fac) and meridional (mer) isomers. Due to the small difference in their properties, the highly-selective synthesis of one of the isomers is challenging. We now designed a series of tripodal ligands with a tris(3-(2-(methyleneoxy)ethoxy)phenyl)methane pivot. Surprisingly, the ratio of the fac/mer isomers of the triply helical Fe^II complexes significantly changed depending on the solvents. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of fac/mer isomerism of a labile tris(2,2'-bipyridine) Fe^II complex governed by the solvent. Furthermore, well-defined self-assemblies were quantitatively produced by imine bond formation with a suitable diamine. The supramolecular assemblies contained only the fac isomer even though a mixture of the two isomers existed in solution before the condensation reaction. Namely, the self-assembly formation effectively adjusted the geometries of the building unit that results in the suitable supramolecular structure.

Programmed Synthesis of Hepta-Differentiated β-Cyclodextrin: 1 out of 117655 Arrangements

Cyclodextrin poly-functionalization has fueled progress in their use in multiple applications such as enzyme mimicry, but also in the polymer sciences, luminescence, as sensors or for biomedical applications. However, regioselective access to a given pattern of functions on β-cyclodextrin is still very limited. We uncover a new orienting group, the thioacetate, that expands the toolbox available for cyclodextrin poly-hetero-functionalization using diisobutylaluminum hydride (DIBAL-H) promoted debenzylation. The usefulness of this group is illustrated in the first synthesis of a precisely hepta-hetero-functionalized β-cyclodextrin. By way of comparison, a random hepta-functionalization would give 117655 different molecules. This synthesis is not simply the vain quest for the Holy Grail of CD hetero-functionalization, but it illustrates the versatility of the DIBAL-H oriented hetero-functionalization strategy, opening the way to a multitude of useful functionalization patterns for new practical applications.

A chiral spirobifluorene-based bis(salen) zinc(ii) receptor towards highly enantioselective binding of chiral carboxylates

We have designed a new chiral receptor based on two salen zinc(ii) complex units connected with a spirobifluorene framework. The chiral receptor is proven to enantioselectively bind chiral carboxylate guests and the differences between the binding constants of enantiomeric guests were up to more than one order of magnitude.

Exclusive formation of a meridional complex of a tripodand and perfect suppression of guest recognition

Tripodal ligands have been utilized for complexation-induced structural change, but all the tripodal complexes reported so far are facial isomers, which do not completely reduce the recognition ability by closing the binding pocket. We now report the first example of the selective synthesis of a meridional tripodal complex. The tripodal ligand with a 1,3,5-triethyl-2,4,6-tris(methylene)benzene pivot possessing 2,2'-bipyridine on each arm exclusively formed a mononuclear complex with the mer-[Fe(bpy)]2+ unit. The meridional tripodal complex has a unique structure in which one bipyridine unit is self-penetrated. As a result of cavity blockage, the ion recognition property of the tripodand has been successfully suppressed.
