Metallic Barium: A Versatile and Efficient Hydrogenation Catalyst

Metal Vapour Synthesis of an Organometallic Barium(0) Synthon

A hydrocarbon-soluble barium anthracene complex was prepared by means of metal vapour synthesis. Reaction of 9,10-bis(trimethylsilyl)anthracene (Anth'') with barium vapour gave deep purple Ba(Anth'') which after extraction with diethyl ether crystallised as the cyclic octamer [Ba(Anth'')⋅Et2 O]8 . Dissolution in benzene or toluene led to replacement of the Et2 O ligand with a softer arene ligand and isolation of Ba(Anth'')⋅arene. Diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY NMR ) measurements in benzene-d6 indicate solution species with a molecular weight that equals a trimeric constitution. Natural population analysis (NPA) assigned charges of +1.70 and -1.70 to Ba and Anth'', respectively, relating to highly ionic Ba2+ /Anth''2- bonding. Preliminary reactivity studies with air, Ph2 C=NPh, or H2 show that the complex reacts as a Ba0 synthon by release of neutral Anth''. This soluble molecular Ba0 /BaII redox synthon provides new routes for the syntheses of barium complexes under mild conditions.

Opportunities with calcium Grignard reagents and other heavy alkaline-earth organometallics

More than a century old, magnesium Grignard reagents remain essential to the toolbox of organic chemists. Although similar reagents with the neighbouring group 2 metal Ca have been explored, the considerably higher polarity and reactivity of the Ca-C bond result in undesired decomposition pathways. Ca Grignard reagents have found academic interest but have never fully developed into an established synthetic tool. Recent research activities, however, provide facile access to these highly reactive organocalcium species, including in situ preparation and ball milling approaches to tackle the challenge of controlling their extreme sensitivity. Heavier Grignard reagents are not just more reactive but profit from unique chemical transformations. Insight into the transition metal-like properties of Ca, Sr and Ba is only just emerging. Considering the rapidly developing field of alkaline-earth metal-mediated catalysis, heavy Grignard reagents will probably have a bright future.

Photoreduction of Anthracenes Catalyzed by peri-Xanthenoxanthene: a Scalable and Sustainable Birch-Type Alternative

The typical Birch reduction transforms arenes into cyclohexa-1,4-dienes by using alkali metals, an alcohol as a proton source, and an amine as solvent. Capitalizing on the strong photoreductive properties of peri-xanthenoxanthene (PXX), herein we report the photocatalyzed "Birch-type" reduction of acenes by employing visible blue light irradiation at room temperature in the presence of air. Upon excitation at 405 or 460 nm in the presence of a mixture of N,N-diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA) and trifluoromethanesulfonimide (HNTf2 ) in DMSO, PXX photocatalyzes the selective reduction of full-carbon acene derivatives (24-75 %). Immobilization of PXX onto polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) beads (PXX-PDMS) allowed the use of the catalyst in heterogeneous batch reactions, giving 9-phenyl-9,10-dihydroanthracene in high yield (68 %). The catalyst could easily be recovered and reused, with no notable drop in performance observed after five reaction cycles. Integration of the PXX-PDMS beads into a microreactor enabled the reduction of acenes under continuous-flow conditions, thereby validating the sustainability and scalability of this heterogeneous-phase approach.

Al-Sc Bonded Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, and Reaction with Benzene in the Presence of Alkyl Halide

An alumanyl anion possessing N,N'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-1,3-propanediamine ligand was synthesized and characterized. Transmetalation of this Al anion with diaminoscandium chloride precursors afforded the corresponding Al-Sc complexes possessing an unprecedented Al-Sc bond. The Al-Sc[N(SiMe₃)₂] complex underwent intramolecular C-H cleavage to form a bridged dinuclear complex with μ-hydrido and μ-methylene ligands. The Al-Sc(NⁱPr₂)₂ complex reacted with benzene in the presence of alkyl bromide to furnish a 1,4-dialuminated cyclohexadiene product with a concomitant formation of the alkyl-alkyl coupled product. Although the latter product seems to form through the radical mechanism, DFT calculations revealed an ionic mechanism involving bimetallic reaction pathways to react with alkyl bromide and benzene, which provides new insight into the chemistry of metal-metal bonded compounds.

Teaming up main group metals with metallic iron to boost hydrogenation catalysis

Hydrogenation of unsaturated bonds is a key step in both the fine and petrochemical industries. Homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts are historically based on noble group 9 and 10 metals. Increasing awareness of sustainability drives the replacement of costly, and often harmful, precious metals by abundant 3d-metals or even main group metals. Although not as efficient as noble transition metals, metallic barium was recently found to be a versatile hydrogenation catalyst. Here we show that addition of finely divided Fe⁰, which itself is a poor hydrogenation catalyst, boosts activities of Ba⁰ by several orders of magnitude, enabling rapid hydrogenation of alkynes, imines, challenging multi-substituted alkenes and non-activated arenes. Metallic Fe⁰ also boosts the activity of soluble early main group metal hydride catalysts, or precursors thereto. This synergy originates from cooperativity between a homogeneous, highly reactive, polar main group metal hydride complex and a heterogeneous Fe⁰ surface that is responsible for substrate activation.

Elemental iron turns alkaline-earth metal complexes into highly active catalysts for the hydrogenation of alkenes, alkynes, imines and arenes. The proposed mechanism combines homogeneous catalysis by a soluble main group metal hydride complex with heterogeneous catalysis at the iron surface.

Heterogeneous Hydrogenation of Quinoline Derivatives Effected by a Granular Cobalt Catalyst

We communicate a convenient method for the pressure hydrogenation of quinolines in aqueous solution by using a particulate cobalt-based catalyst that is prepared in situ from simple Co(OAc)2·4H2O through reduction with abundant zinc powder. This catalytic protocol permits a brisk and atom-efficient access to a variety of 1,2,3,4-tetra­hydroquinolines thereby relying solely on easy-to-handle reagents that are all readily obtained from commercial sources. Both the reaction setup assembly and the autoclave charging procedure are conducted on the bench outside an inert-gas-operated containment system, thus rendering the overall synthesis time-saving and operationally very simple.

Molecular Main Group Metal Hydrides

This review serves to document advances in the synthesis, versatile bonding, and reactivity of molecular main group metal hydrides within Groups 1, 2, and 12-16. Particular attention will be given to the emerging use of said hydrides in the rapidly expanding field of Main Group element-mediated catalysis. While this review is comprehensive in nature, focus will be given to research appearing in the open literature since 2001.

New horizons in low oxidation state group 2 metal chemistry

Since the seminal report on Mg in the +I oxidation state in 2007, low-valent complexes featuring a Mg^I-Mg^I bond developed from trophy molecules to state-of-the-art reducing agents. Despite increasing interest in low-valency of the other group 2 metals, this area was restricted for a long time to a rare example of a Ca^I(arene)Ca^I inverse sandwich. This feature article focuses on the most recent developments in the field, highlighting recent breakthroughs for Be, Mg and Ca. The more exotic metal Be was the first to be isolated as a zero-valent complex which could be oxidized to a Be^I species. There also has been interest in breaking the Mg^I-Mg^I bond with superbulky β-diketiminate ligands (BDI) that suppress (BDI)Mg-Mg(BDI) bond formation. This led to Mg-Mg bond elongation or Mg-N bond cleavage. Several reports on attempts to isolate (BDI)Mg˙ radicals by combinations of ligand bulk, addition of neutral ligands or UV(vis) irradiation led to reduction of the aromatic solvents, underscoring the high reactivity of these open shell species. Only recently, zero-valent complexes of Mg were introduced. Double reduction of a (BDI)MgI complex with Na gave [(BDI)Mg^-]Na⁺. This Mg⁰ complex crystallized as a dimer in which the Na⁺ cations bridge the two (BDI)Mg^- anions which react as Mg nucleophiles. Thermal decomposition led to spontaneous formation of Na⁰ and a trinuclear (BDI)MgMgMg(BDI) complex. This mixed-valence Mg₃-complex is a prime example of the fleeting multinuclear Mg_n intermediates discussed on the way from Mg metal to Grignard reagent. Attempts to prepare low-valent Ca^I compounds by reduction of (BDI)CaI led to dearomatization of the arene solvents: (BDI)Ca(arene)Ca(BDI). Reduction in alkanes prevented this decomposition pathway but led to N₂ reduction and isolation of (BDI)Ca(N₂)Ca(BDI), representing the first example of molecular nitrogen fixation with an early main group metal. As the N₂^2- anion reacts in most cases as a very strong two-electron reductant, LCa(N₂)CaL could be seen as a synthon for hitherto elusive Ca^I-Ca^I complexes. Theoretical calculations suggest that participation of Ca d-orbitals is relevant for N₂ activation. These most recent developments in low-valent group 2 metal chemistry will revive this area and undoubtly lead to new reactivities and applications.

Transition-Metal Chemistry of the Heavier Alkaline Earth Atoms Ca, Sr, and Ba

ConspectusAlkaline earth elements beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, and barium with an ns² valence-shell configuration are usually classified as main-group elements that belong to the s-block atoms. For a long time, the elements were considered to be rather chemically uninteresting atomic species due to preconceived ideas about bonding, structure, and reactivity. They typically use the two ns valence electrons in forming ionic salt compounds with the metal in a formal oxidation state of +2. For the heavier alkaline earth atoms, calcium, strontium, and barium, their (n - 1)d atomic orbitals (AOs) are empty but lie close in energy to the valence np orbitals. Earlier theoretical investigations have already suggested that these elements can employ the (n - 1)d AOs to some extent to form polar bonds in divalent species in which the alkaline earth metal centers are sufficiently positively charged. The d orbital involvement increases from Ca to Sr and markedly in Ba. Thus, barium has been termed an honorary transition metal.Recently, molecular complexes of Ca, Sr, and Ba were prepared in the gas phase and in a low-temperature solid neon matrix and were detected by infrared spectroscopy. An analysis of the electronic structures of [Ba(CO)]⁺, [Ba(CO)]^-, saturated coordinated octacarbonyls [M(CO)₈] and [M(CO)₈]⁺, isoelectronic dinitrogen complexes [M(N₂)₈] and [M(N₂)₈]⁺, and the tribenzene complexes [M(Bz)₃] (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) revealed that the metal-ligand bonding can be straightforwardly discussed using the traditional Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson (DCD) model as in classical transition-metal complexes. The metal-ligand bonds can be explained with metal → ligand π back donation from occupied metal (n - 1)d AOs to vacant antibonding π molecular orbitals of the ligands with concomitant σ donation from occupied MOs of the ligands to vacant metal d orbitals of the alkaline earth atoms. In addition, heteronuclear Ca-Fe carbonyl cation complexes were also produced in the gas phase. Bonding analysis of the coordination saturated [CaFe(CO)₁₀]⁺ complex implies that it can be described by the bonding interactions between a [Ca(CO)₆]²⁺ fragment and an [Fe(CO)₄]^- anion fragment in forming a Fe → Ca d-d dative bond. The nature of metal-ligand and metal-metal bonding was quantitatively elucidated by the energy decomposition analysis in conjunction with the natural orbitals for the chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) method, which indicate that the (n - 1)d AOs of the alkaline earth metals are the dominant orbitals participating in the covalent interactions, just as typical transition metals. The results indicate that the heavier alkaline earth elements have a much richer covalent chemistry than previously thought. These findings, along with earlier studies, suggest that the heavier alkaline earth atoms Ca, Sr, and Ba should be classified as transition metals rather than main group atoms in the periodic table of the elements. This interesting structural chemistry, together with some recently reported examples of spectacular reactivity, establishes these elements as exciting and promising research targets in current research.
