Synthesizing Photoluminescent Au28 (SCH2 Ph-t Bu)22 Nanoclusters with Structural Features by Using a Combined Method

Interplay of kernel shape and surface structure for NIR luminescence in atomically precise gold nanorods

It is challenging to attain strong near-infrared (NIR) emissive gold nanoclusters. Here we show a rod-shaped cluster with the composition of [Au28(p-MBT)14(Hdppa)3](SO3CF3)2 (1 for short, Hdppa is N,N-bis(diphenylphosphino)amine, p-MBT is 4-methylbenzenethiolate) has been synthesized. Single crystal X-ray structural analysis reveals that it has a rod-like face-centered cubic (fcc) Au22 kernel built from two interpenetrating bicapped cuboctahedral Au15 units. 1 features NIR luminescence with an emission maximum at 920 nm, and the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is 12%, which is 30-fold of [Au21(m-MBT)12(Hdppa)2]SO3CF3 (2, m-MBT is 3-methylbenzenethiolate) with a similar composition and 60-fold of Au30S(S‑t‑Bu)18 with a similar structure. time-dependent DFT(TDDFT)calculations reveal that the luminescence of 1 is associated with the Au22 kernel. The small Stokes shift of 1 indicates that it has a very small excited state structural distortion, leading to high radiative decay rate (kr) probability. The emission of cluster 1 is a mixture of phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence(TADF), and the enhancement of the NIR emission is mainly due to the promotion of kr rather than the inhibition of knr. This work demonstrates that the metal kernel and the surface structure are both very important for cluster-based NIR luminescence materials.

Aggregation Inducing Reversible Conformational Isomerization of Surface Staple in Au18SR14 Nanoclusters

The conformation of molecules and materials is crucial in determining their properties and applications. Here, this work explores the reversible transformation between two distinct conformational isomers in metal nanoclusters. This work demonstrates the successful manipulation of a controllable and reversible isomerization of Au18SR14 within an aqueous solution through two distinct methods: ethanol addition and pH adjustment. The initial driver is the alteration of the solution environment, leading to the aggregation of Au18SR14 protected by ligands with smaller steric hindrance. At the atomic level, the folding mode of the unique Au4SR5 staple underpins the observed structural transformation. The reversal of staple conformation leads to color shifting between green and orange-red, and tailors a second emission peak at 725 nm originating from charge transfer from the thiolate to the Au9 core. This work not only deepens the understanding of the surface structure and dual-emission of metal nanoparticles, but also enhances the comprehension of their isomerization.

Filling the gaps in icosahedral superatomic metal clusters

Chemically modified superatoms have emerged as promising candidates in the new periodic table, in which Au13 and its doped M n Au13- n have been widely studied. However, their important counterpart, Ag13 artificial element, has not yet been synthesized. In this work, we report the synthesis of Ag13 nanoclusters using strong chelating ability and rigid ligands, that fills the gaps in the icosahedral superatomic metal clusters. After further doping Ag13 template with different degrees of Au atoms, we gained insight into the evolution of their optical properties. Theoretical calculations show that the kernel metal doping can modulate the transition of the excited-state electronic structure, and the electron transfer process changes from local excitation (LE) to charge transfer (CT) to LE. This study not only enriches the families of artificial superatoms, but also contributes to the understanding of the electronic states of superatomic clusters.

Noncovalent Interaction Guided Precise Photoluminescence Regulation of Gold Nanoclusters in Both Isolate Species and Aggregate States

Designing luminophores bright in both isolate species and aggregate states is of great importance in many emerging cutting-edge applications. However, the conventional luminophores either emit in isolate species but quench in aggregate state or emit in aggregate state but darken in isolate species. Here we demonstrate that the precise regulation of noncovalent interactions can realize luminophores bright in both isolate species and aggregate states. It is firstly discovered that the intra-cluster interaction enhances the emission of atomically precise Au25(pMBA)18 (pMBA=4-mercaptobenzoic acid), a nanoscale luminophore, while the inter-cluster interaction quenches the emission. The emission enhancing strategies are then well-designed by both introducing exogenous substances to block inter-cluster interaction and surface manipulation of Au25(pMBA)18 at the molecular level to enhance intra-cluster interaction, opening new possibilities to controllably enhance the luminophore's photoluminescence in both isolate species and aggregate states in different phases including aqueous solution, solid state and organic solvents.

Two-Orders-of-Magnitude Enhancement of Photoinitiation Activity via a Simple Surface Engineering of Metal Nanoclusters

Development of high-performance photoinitiator is the key to enhance the printing speed, structure resolution and product quality in 3D laser printing. Here, to improve the printing efficiency of 3D laser nanoprinting, we investigate the underlying photochemistry of gold and silver nanocluster initiators under multiphoton laser excitation. Experimental results and DFT calculations reveal the high cleavage probability of the surface S-C bonds in gold and silver nanoclusters which generate multiple radicals. Based on this understanding, we design several alkyl-thiolated gold nanoclusters and achieve a more than two-orders-of-magnitude enhancement of photoinitiation activity, as well as a significant improvement in printing resolution and fabrication window. Overall, this work for the first time unveils the detailed radical formation pathways of gold and silver nanoclusters under multiphoton activation and substantially improves their photoinitiation sensitivity via surface engineering, which pushes the limit of the printing efficiency of 3D laser lithography.

Dithiocarbonate-Protected Au25 Nanorods of a Chiral D5 Configuration and NIR-II Phosphorescence

Innovative surface-protecting ligands are in constant demand due to their crucial role in shaping the configuration, property, and application of gold nanoclusters. Here, the unprecedented O-ethyl dithiocarbonate (DTX)-stabilized atomically precise gold nanoclusters, [Au25(PPh3)10(DTX)5Cl2]2+ (Au25DTX-Cl) and [Au25(PPh3)10(DTX)5Br2]2+ (Au25DTX-Br), were synthesized and structurally characterized. The introduction of bidentate DTX ligands not only endowed the gold nanocluster with unique staggered Au25 nanorod configurations but also generated the symmetry breaking from the D5d geometry of the Au25 kernels to the chiral D5 configuration of the Au25 molecules. The chirality of Au25 nanorods was notably revealed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and chiral separation was induced by employing chiral DTX ligands. The staggered configurations of Au25 nanorods, as opposed to eclipsed ones, were responsible for the large red shift in the emission wavelengths, giving rise to a promising near-infrared II (NIR-II, >1000 nm) phosphorescence. Furthermore, their performances in photocatalytic sulfide oxidation and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions have been examined, and it has been demonstrated that the outstanding catalytic activity of gold nanoclusters is highly related to their stability.

Bright near-infrared emission from the Au39(SR)29 nanocluster

The synthesis of atomically precise gold nanoclusters with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in the near-infrared (NIR) region and understanding their photoluminescence mechanism are crucial for both fundamental science and practical applications. Herein, we report a highly luminescent, molecularly pure Au39(PET)29 (PET = 2-phenylethanethiolate) nanocluster with PLQY of 19% in the NIR range (915 nm). Steady state and time-resolved PL analyses, as well as temperature-dependent PL measurements reveal the emission nature of Au39(PET)29, which consists of prompt fluorescence (weak), thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and phosphorescence (predominant). Furthermore, strong dipole-dipole interaction in the solid-state (e.g., Au39(PET)29 nanoclusters embedded in a polystyrene thin-film) is found to narrow the energy gap between the S1 and T1 states, which results in faster intersystem crossing and reverse intersystem crossing; thus, the ratio of TADF to phosphorescence varies and the total PLQY is increased to 32%. This highly luminescent nanocluster holds promise in imaging, sensing and optoelectronic applications.

Building Block Metal Nanocluster-Based Growth in 1D Direction

Metal nanoclusters with precisely modulated structures at the nanoscale give us the opportunity to synthesize and investigate 1D nanomaterials at the atomic level. Herein, it realizes selective 1D growth of building block nanocluster "Au13 Cd2 " into three structurally different nanoclusters: "hand-in-hand" (Au13 Cd2 )2 O, "head-to-head" Au25 , and "shoulder-to-shoulder" Au33 . Detailed studies further reveals the growth mechanism and the growth-related tunable properties. This work provides new hints for the predictable structural transformation of nanoclusters and atomically precise construction of 1D nanomaterials.

The Pivotal Radical Intermediate [Au21(SR)15]+ in the Ligand-Exchange-Induced Size-Reduction of [Au23(SR)16]- to Au16(SR)12

The atomic precision of sub-nanometer-sized metal nanoclusters makes it possible to elucidate the kinetics of metal nanomaterials from the molecular level. Herein, the size reduction of an atomically precise [Au23(CHT)16]- (HCHT = cyclohexanethiol) cluster upon ligand exchange with HSAdm (1-adamantanethiol) has been reported. During the 16 h conversion of [Au23(CHT)16]- to Au16(SR)12, the neutral 6e Au21(SR)15, and its 1e-reduction state, i.e. the 5e, cationic radical, [Au21(SR)15]+, are active intermediates to account for the formation of thermodynamically stable Au16 products. The combination of spectroscopic monitoring (with UV-vis and ESI-MS) and DFT calculations indicates the preferential size-reduction on the corner Au atoms on the core surface and the terminal Au atoms on longer AunSn+1 staples. This study provides a reassessment on the electronic state of the Au21 structure and highlights the single electron transfer processes in cluster systems and thus the importance of the EPR analysis on the mechanistic issues.

Visible to NIR-II Photoluminescence of Atomically Precise Gold Nanoclusters

Atomically precise gold nanoclusters (NCs) have emerged as a new class of precision materials and attracted wide interest in recent years. One of the unique properties of such nanoclusters pertains to their photoluminescence (PL), for it can widely span visible to near-infrared-I and -II wavelengths (NIR-I/II), and even beyond 1700 nm by manipulating the size, structure, and composition. The current research efforts focus on the structure-PL correlation and the development of strategies for raising the PL quantum yields, which is nontrivial when moving from the visible to the near-infrared wavelengths, especially in the NIR-II regions. This review summarizes the recent progress in the field, including i) the types of PL observed in gold NCs such as fluorescence, phosphorescence, and thermally activated delayed fluorescence, as well as dual emission; ii) some effective strategies that are devised to improve the PL quantum yield (QY) of gold NCs, such as heterometal doping, surface rigidification, and core phonon engineering, with double-digit QYs for the NIR PL on the horizons; and iii) the applications of luminescent gold NCs in bioimaging, photosensitization, and optoelectronics. Finally, the remaining challenges and opportunities for future research are highlighted.

[Au14(2-SAdm)9(Dppe)2]+: a gold nanocluster with a crystallization-induced emission enhancement phenomenon

In this work, a gold nanocluster [Au14(2-SAdm)9(Dppe)2]+ was synthesized and structurally determined by X-ray crystallography. The crystals of this cluster exhibit a 50-fold enhancement in quantum yield (5.05% for crystals) compared with its solution. Crystallographic analysis reveals that the weak intermolecular interactions (C-H⋯π, π⋯π) can inhibit the molecular vibration and thus generate the crystallization-induced emission enhancement phenomenon.

Pd8 Nanocluster with Nonmetal-to-Metal- Ring Coordination and Promising Photothermal Conversion Efficiency

Constructing ambient-stable, single-atom-layered metal-based materials with atomic precision and understanding their underlying stability mechanisms are challenging. Here, stable single-atom-layered nanoclusters of Pd were synthesized and precisely characterized through electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. A pseudo-pentalene-like Pd8 unit was found in the nanocluster, interacting with two syn PPh units through nonmetal-to-metal -ring coordination. The unexpected coordination, which is distinctly different from the typical organoring-to-metal coordination in half-sandwich-type organometallic compounds, contributes to the ambient stability of the as-obtained single-atom-layered nanocluster as revealed through theoretical and experimental analyses. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations revealed dominant electron transition along the horizontal x-direction of the Pd8 plane, indicating high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of the nanocluster, which was verified by the experimental PCE of 73.3 %. Therefore, this study unveils the birth of a novel type of compound and the finding of the unusual nonmetal-to-metal -ring coordination and has important implications for future syntheses, structures, properties, and structure-property correlations of single-atom-layered metal-based materials.

Lattice Compression Revealed at the ≈1 nm Scale

Lattice tuning at the ≈1 nm scale is fascinating and challenging; for instance, lattice compression at such a minuscule scale has not been observed. The lattice compression might also bring about some unusual properties, which waits to be verified. Through ligand induction, we herein achieve the lattice compression in a ≈1 nm gold nanocluster for the first time, as detected by the single-crystal X-ray crystallography. In a freshly synthesized Au52 (CHT)28 (CHT=S-c-C6 H11 ) nanocluster, the lattice distance of the (110) facet is found to be compressed from 4.51 to 3.58 Å at the near end. However, the lattice distances of the (111) and (100) facets show no change in different positions. The lattice-compressed nanocluster exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) compared to that exhibited by the same-sized Au52 (TBBT)32 (TBBT=4-tert-butyl-benzenethiolate) nanocluster and larger Au nanocrystals without lattice variation, indicating that lattice tuning is an efficient method for tailoring the properties of metal nanoclusters. Further theoretical calculations explain the high CO2 RR performance of the lattice-compressed Au52 (CHT)28 and provide a correlation between its structure and catalytic activity.

Sandwich-Kernelled AgCu Nanoclusters with Golden Ratio Geometry and Promising Photothermal Efficiency

Metal nanoclusters have recently attracted extensive interest from the scientific community. However, unlike carbon-based materials and metal nanocrystals, they rarely exhibit a sheet kernel structure, probably owing to the instability caused by the high exposure of metal atoms (particularly in the relatively less noble Ag or Cu nanoclusters) in such a structure. Herein, we synthesized a novel AgCu nanocluster with a sandwich-like kernel (diameter≈0.9 nm and length≈0.25 nm) by introducing the furfuryl mercaptan ligand (FUR) and the alloying strategy. Interestingly, the kernel consists of a centered silver atom and two planar Ag10 pentacle units with completely mirrored symmetry after a rotation of 36 degrees. The two Ag10 pentacles and some extended structures show an unreported golden ratio geometry, and the two inner five-membered rings and the centered Ag atom form an unanticipated full-metal ferrocene-like structure. The featured kernel structure causes the dominant radial direction transition of excitation electrons, as determined via time-dependent density functional theory calculations, which affords the protruding absorption at 612 nm and contributes to the promising photothermal conversion efficiency of 67.6 % of the as-obtained nanocluster, having important implications for structure-property correlation and the development of nanocluser-based photothermal materials.

A route to metalloligands consolidated silver nanoclusters by grafting thiacalix[4]arene onto polyoxovanadates

Metalloligands provide a potent strategy for manipulating the surface metal arrangements of metal nanoclusters, but their synthesis and subsequent installation onto metal nanoclusters remains a significant challenge. Herein, two atomically precise silver nanoclusters {Ag14[(TC4A)6(V9O16)](CyS)3} (Ag14) and {Ag43S[(TC4A)2(V4O9)]3(CyS)9(PhCOO)3Cl3(SO4)4(DMF)3·6DMF} (Ag43) are synthesized by controlling reaction temperature (H4TC4A = p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene). Interestingly, the 3D scaffold-like [(TC4A)6(V9O16)]11- metalloligand in Ag14 and 1D arcuate [(TC4A)2(V4O9)]6- metalloligand in Ag43 exhibit a dual role that is the internal polyoxovanadates as anion template and the surface TC4A4- as the passivating agent. Furthermore, the thermal-induced structure transformation between Ag14 and Ag43 is achieved based on the temperature-dependent assembly process. Ag14 shows superior photothermal conversion performance than Ag43 in solid state indicating its potential for remote laser ignition. Here, we show the potential of two thiacalix[4]arene modified polyoxovanadates metalloligands in the assembly of metal nanoclusters and provide a cornerstone for the remote laser ignition applications of silver nanoclusters.

Size Growth of Au4Cu4: From Increased Nucleation to Surface Capping

The size conversion of atomically precise metal nanoclusters is fundamental for elucidating structure-property correlations. In this study, copper salt (CuCl)-induced size growth from [Au₄Cu₄(Dppm)₂(SAdm)₅]⁺ (abbreviated as [Au₄Cu₄S₅]⁺) to [Au₄Cu₆(Dppm)₂(SAdm)₄Cl₃]⁺ (abbreviated as [Au₄Cu₆S₄Cl₃]⁺) (SAdmH = 1-adamantane mercaptan, Dppm = bis-(diphenylphosphino)methane) was investigated via experiments and density functional theory calculations. The [Au₄Cu₄S₅]⁺ adopts a defective pentagonal bipyramid core structure with surface cavities, which could be easily filled with the sterically less hindered CuCl and CuSCy (i.e., core growth) (HSCy = cyclohexanethiol) but not the bulky CuSAdm. As long as the Au₄Cu₅ framework is formed, ligand exchange or size growth occurs easily. However, owing to the compact pentagonal bipyramid core structure, the latter growth mode occurs only for the surface-capped [Au₄Cu₆(Dppm)₂(SAdm)₄Cl₃]⁺ structure (i.e., surface-capped size growth). A preliminary mechanistic study with density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the overall conversion occurred via CuCl addition, core tautomerization, Cl migration, the second [CuCl] addition, and [CuCl]-[CuSR] exchange steps. And the [Au₄Cu₆(Dppm)₂(SAdm)₄Cl₃]⁺ alloy nanocluster exhibits aggregation-induced emission (AIE) with an absolute luminescence quantum yield of 18.01% in the solid state. This work sheds light on the structural transformation of Au-Cu alloy nanoclusters induced by Cu(I) and contributes to the knowledge base of metal-ion-induced size conversion of metal nanoclusters.

Eight-Electron Superatomic Cu31 Nanocluster with Chiral Kernel and NIR-II Emission

Owing to the inherent instability caused by the low Cu(I)/Cu(0) half-cell reduction potential, Cu(0)-containing copper nanoclusters are quite uncommon in comparison to their Ag and Au congeners. Here, a novel eight-electron superatomic copper nanocluster [Cu₃₁(4-MeO-PhC≡C)₂₁(dppe)₃](ClO₄)₂ (Cu₃₁, dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) is presented with total structural characterization. The structural determination reveals that Cu₃₁ features an inherent chiral metal core arising from the helical arrangement of two sets of three Cu₂ units encircling the icosahedral Cu₁₃ core, which is further shielded by 4-MeO-PhC≡C^- and dppe ligands. Cu₃₁ is the first copper nanocluster carrying eight free electrons, which is further corroborated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Interestingly, Cu₃₁ demonstrates the first near-infrared (750-950 nm, NIR-I) window absorption and the second near-infrared (1000-1700 nm, NIR-II) window emission, which is exceptional in the copper nanocluster family and endows it with great potential in biological applications. Of note, the 4-methoxy groups providing close contacts with neighboring clusters are crucial for the cluster formation and crystallization, while 2-methoxyphenylacetylene leads only to copper hydride clusters, Cu₆H or Cu₃₂H₁₄. This research not only showcases a new member of copper superatoms but also exemplifies that copper nanoclusters, which are nonluminous in the visible range may emit luminescence in the deep NIR region.

Au10Ag17(TPP)10(SR)6Cl5 nanocluster: structure, transformation and the origin of its photoluminescence

Nanocluster photoluminescence (PL) has important practical applications and its rationalization is therefore of significant interest. Here, we report the synthesis, structure determination and photoluminescence of Au₁₀Ag₁₇(TPP)₁₀(SR)₆Cl₅ (TPP = triphenylphosphine, SR = 3, 5-bis(trifluoromethyl)thiophenol, denoted as Au10Ag17). Au10Ag17 exhibited a low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 2.8%, which could be increased 15-fold by removing the two terminal silver atoms to give Ag_xAu_25-x(SR)₅(TPP)₁₀Cl₂²⁺ (x = 11-13, SR = 2-phenylethylmercaptan, abbrev. Au12Ag13). The discovery of such a PL switch constitutes an interesting opportunity to further understand the origin of fluorescence in nanoclusters.

Room-Temperature Spin Transport in Metal Nanocluster-Based Spin Valves

As a new type of inorganic-organic hybrid semiconductor, quantum-confined atomically precise metal nanoclusters (MNCs) have been widely applied in the fields of chemical sensing, optical imaging, biomedicine and catalysis. Herein, we successfully design and fabricate the first example of MNC-based spin valves (SVs) that exhibit remarkable magnetoresistance (MR) value up to 1.6 % even at room temperature (300 K). The concomitant photoresponse of MNC-based SVs unambiguously confirms that the spin-polarized electron transmission takes place across the MNC interlayer. Furthermore, the spin-dependent transport property of MNC-based SVs is largely varied by changing the atomic structure of MNCs. Both experimental proofs and quantum chemistry calculations reveal that the atomic structure-discriminative spin transport behavior is attributed to the distinct spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect of MNCs.

DFT Insights into the Variety in the Coordination Modes of the Equatorial Halides in [Au13 Ag12 (PR3 )10 X8 ]+ (X=Cl/Br) Clusters

The bonding character within metal nanoclusters represents an intriguing topic, shedding light on the inherent driving force for the packing preference in nanomaterials. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to investigate the correlation of the series of isomeric [Au₁₃ Ag₁₂ (PR₃ )₁₀ X₈ ]⁺ (X=Cl/Br) clusters, which are mainly differentiated by the coordination mode of the equatorial halides (μ₂ -, μ₃ - and μ₄ -) in the rod-like, bi-icosahedral framework. The theoretical simulation corroborates the variety in the configuration of the Au₁₃ Ag₁₂ clusters and elucidates the fast isomerization kinetics among the different configurations. The easy tautomerization and the variety in chloride binding modes correspond to a fluxionality character of the equatorial halides and are verified by the potential energy curve analysis. The structural flexibility of the central Au₃ Ag₁₀ block is the main driving force, while the relatively stronger Ag-X bonding interaction (compared to that of Au-X), and a sufficient number of halides are also requisite for the associating Ag-X tautomerizations.

Highly luminescent gold nanocluster assemblies for bioimaging in living organisms

Fluorescent gold nanoclusters are promising nanomaterials for biomedical applications but confronted with low emission efficiency and poor surface functionality. Herein, three kinds of highly luminescent and functionalized gold nanocluster nano-assembled structures were fabricated by poly-l-arginine surface engineering for luminescence improvement. The assembly is employed for imaging the glutathione molecule in cells and living organisms with low background and high sensitivity.

Source of Bright Near-Infrared Luminescence in Gold Nanoclusters

Gold nanoclusters with near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence (PL) have great potential as sensing and imaging materials in biomedical and bioimaging applications. In this work, Au₂₁(S-Adm)₁₅ and Au₃₈S₂(S-Adm)₂₀ are used to unravel the underlying mechanisms for the improved quantum yields (QY), large Stokes shifts, and long PL lifetimes in gold nanoclusters. Both nanoclusters show decent PL QY. In particular, the Au₃₈S₂(S-Adm)₂₀ nanocluster shows a bright NIR PL at 900 nm with QY up to 15% in normal solvents (such as toluene) at ambient conditions. The relatively lower QY for Au₂₁(S-Adm)₁₅ (4%) compared to that of Au₃₈S₂(S-Adm)₂₀ is attributed to the lowest-lying excited state being symmetry-disallowed, as evidenced by the pressure-dependent antispectral shift of the absorption spectra compared to PL, yet Au₂₁(S-Adm)₁₅ maintains some emissive properties due to a nearby symmetry-allowed excited state. Furthermore, our results show that suppression of nonradiative decay due to the surface "lock rings", which encircle the Au kernel and the surface "lock atoms" which bridge the fundamental Au kernel units (e.g., tetrahedra, icosahedra, etc.), is the key to obtaining high QYs in gold nanoclusters. The complicated excited-state processes and the small absorption coefficient of the band-edge transition lead to the large Stokes shifts and the long PL lifetimes that are widely observed in gold nanoclusters.

Efficient Near-Infrared Electrochemiluminescence from Au18 Nanoclusters

Bright, near-infrared electrochemiluminescence (NIR-ECL) of Au₁₈ nanoclusters is reported herein. Spooling ECL and photoluminescence spectroscopy were used to track and link NIR emissions at 832 and 848 nm to three emissive species, Au₁₈ ⁰ *, Au₁₈ ¹⁺ * and Au₁₈ ²⁺ *, with a considerably high ECL efficiency of 5.5 relative to that of the gold standard Ru(bpy)₃ ²⁺ /TPrA (with 5-6 % reported ECL efficiency). The unprecedentedly high efficiency is due to the overlapped oxidation potentials of Au₁₈ ⁰ and tri-n-propylamine as co-reactant, the exposed facets of Au₁₈ ⁰ gold core, and electrocatalytic loops. These discoveries will add a new member to the efficient NIR-ECL gold nanoclusters family and bring more potential applications.
