Abstract
Pure aromatic hydrocarbon materials (PHCs) represent a new generation of host materials for phosphorescent OLEDs (PhOLEDs), free of heteroatoms. They reduce the molecular complexity, can be easily synthesized and are an important direction towards robust devices. As heteroatoms can be involved in bonds dissociations in operating OLEDs through exciton induced degradation processes, developing novel PHCs appear particularly relevant for the future of this technology. In the present work, we report a series of extended PHCs constructed by the assembly of three spirobifluorene fragments. The resulting positional isomers present a high triplet energy level, a wide HOMO/LUMO difference and improved thermal and morphological properties compared to previously reported PHCs. These characteristics are beneficial for the next generation of host materials for PhOLEDs and provide relevant design guidelines. When used as a host in blue-emitting PhOLEDs, which are still the weakest link of the field, a very high EQE of 24 % and low threshold voltage of 3.56 V were obtained with a low-efficiency roll-off. This high performance strengthens the position of PHC strategy as an efficient alternative for OLED technology and opens the way to a more simple electronic.

Abstract
In this work, we present a design concept of introducing linear structures into the orthogonal configuration of 9,9'-spirobifluorene (SBF), aiming to enhance carrier mobilities while maintaining high triplet energies (E T), which are two critical parameters for optimizing host materials in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). To validate our proposed design, four pivotal model molecules of 1,4-diaryl SBFs were synthesized via interannular C-H arylation of bi(hetero)aryl-2-formaldehydes, a task challenging to accomplish using previous synthetic methodologies. The orthogonal configuration and the steric hindrance of SBF lead to high E T through the conjugation breaking at C1 and C4 positions, rendering 1,4-diaryl SBFs suitable as universal pure hydrocarbon (PHC) hosts for red, green, and blue (RGB) phosphorescent OLEDs (PhOLEDs). Meanwhile, the linearity and relatively good planarity of the para-quaterphenyl structure promote high carrier mobilities through orderly intermolecular packing. The synergistic effects of linearity and orthogonality in 1-(para-biphenyl)-4-phenyl-SBF result in exceptional device performance with external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 26.0%, 26.1%, and 22.5% for RGB PhOLEDs, respectively. Notably, the green PhOLED exhibits minimal efficiency roll-off, positioning its device performances among the state-of-the-art in PHC hosts.

Abstract
Efficient and streamlined synthetic methods that facilitate the rapid build-up of structurally diverse π-conjugated systems are of paramount importance in the quest for organic optoelectronic materials. Among these methods, transition-metal-catalyzed oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H coupling reactions between two (hetero)arenes have emerged as a concise and effective approach for generating a wide array of bi(hetero)aryl and fused heteroaryl structures. This innovative approach bypasses challenges associated with substrate pre-activation processes, thereby allowing for the creation of frameworks that were previously beyond reach using conventional Ar-X/Ar-M coupling reactions. These inherent advantages have ushered in new design patterns for organic optoelectronic molecules that deviate from traditional methods. This ground-breaking approach enables the transcendence of the limitations of repetitive material structures, ultimately leading to the discovery of novel high-performance materials. In this Perspective, we provide an overview of recent advances in the development of organic optoelectronic materials through the utilization of transition-metal-catalyzed oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H coupling reactions. We introduce several notable synthetic strategies in this domain, covering both directed and non-directed oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H coupling strategies, dual chelation-assisted strategy and directed ortho-C-H arylation/cyclization strategy. Additionally, we shed light on the role of oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H coupling reactions in the advancement of high-performance organic optoelectronic materials. Finally, we discuss the current limitations of existing protocols and offer insights into the future prospects for this field.

Abstract
Herein, we report the divergent benzannulation for highly substituted arenes using vinyl sulfoxonium ylides and ynones. The addition of ynone at the γ-position of vinyl sulfoxonium ylides leads to dienyl sulfoxonium ylide that can undergo selective annulation under different conditions to give m-terphenyls and parabens. Moreover, control experiments and quantum chemical calculations reveal two distinct reaction mechanisms for both annulations.

Abstract
Pure polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) consisting solely of carbon-hydrogen or carbon-carbon bonds offer great potential for constructing durable and cost-effective emitters in organic electroluminescence devices. However, achieving versatile fluorescence characteristics in pure PAHs remains a considerable challenge, particularly without the inclusion of heteroatoms. Herein, an efficient approach is presented that involves incorporating non-six-membered rings into classical pyrene isomerides, enabling simultaneous achievement of full-color emission, delayed fluorescence, and anti-Kasha emission. Theoretical calculations reveal that the intensity and distribution of aromaticity/anti-aromaticity in both ground and excited states play a crucial role in determining the excited levels and fluorescence yields. Transient fluorescence measurements confirm the existence of thermally activated delayed fluorescence in pure PAHs. By utilizing these PAHs as emitting layers, electroluminescent spectra covering the entire visible region along with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 9.1% can be achieved, leading to the most exceptional results among non-doped pure hydrocarbon-based devices.

Abstract
Here, we carried out a dipole moment engineering to convert a classical BN-PAH framework into a formal acceptor for the construction of bipolar OLED host materials, with this engineering involving the introduction of two "donor wings". The installation of the donors transformed the small local dipole moment of the BN-PAH framework into a large charge-transfer dipole moment, leading to a more separated frontier molecular orbital distribution beneficial for bipolar transport as well as a higher glass-transition temperature beneficial for morphological stability. The assembled donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) triads exhibited promising potential as universal bipolar hosts for the fabrication of OLEDs of various categories with wide color gamuts, such as blue multiple-resonance OLEDs (MR-OLEDs), green thermally activated delayed-fluorescence OLEDs (TADF-OLEDs), yellow TADF-sensitized fluorescence OLEDs (TSF-OLEDs), and red phosphorescence OLEDs (Ph-OLEDs).

Abstract
To date, all efficient host materials reported for phosphorescent OLEDs (PhOLEDs) are constructed with heteroatoms, which have a crucial role in the device performance. However, it has been shown in recent years that the heteroatoms not only increase the design complexity but can also be involved in the instability of the PhOLED, which is nowadays the most important obstacle to overcome. Herein, we design pure aromatic hydrocarbon materials (PHC) as very efficient hosts in high-performance white and blue PhOLEDs. With EQE of 27.7 %, the PHC-based white PhOLEDs display similar efficiency as the best reported with heteroatom-based hosts. Incorporated as a host in a blue PhOLED, which are still the weakest links of the technology, a very high EQE of 25.6 % is reached, surpassing, for the first time, the barrier of 25 % for a PHC and FIrpic blue emitter. This performance shows that the PHC strategy represents an effective alternative for the future development of the OLED industry.

Abstract
Herein, N-heterocyclic carbene-directed Ir(III)-catalyzed cascade C-H arylation/annulation of N-arylimidazolium with diaryliodonium salts has been accomplished for the first time via a quadruple C-H activation strategy to construct imidazo[1,2-f]phenanthridinium structures. This protocol overcomes the compatibility of three kinds of different C-H activations with high catalytic efficiency, which allows ortho-unhindered N-arylimidazoliums to undergo a diarylation/annulation reaction, affording a variety of polysubstituted imidazo[1,2-f]phenanthridiniums. Neutral imidazo[1,2-f]phenanthridines are also prepared via a demethylation reaction of imidazo[1,2-f]phenanthridiniums.

Abstract
We describe here a facile synthesis of 9-arylfluorenes and spirobifluorenes from readily available 1,1-diarylmethylamines and iodoarenes through Pd-cataylsed C(sp2)-H arylation and a sequential deaminative annulation. The reaction features high efficiency and simplicity of operation, constituting an interesting shortcut to access fluorene compounds.

Abstract
The emitting layer based on a host-guest system plays a crucial role in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). While emitters have witnessed rapid progress in structural diversity, hosts still rely heavily on traditional structures and are underdeveloped. Herein a "medium-ring" strategy has been put forward to design structurally nontraditional host molecules, which are not only rotatable enough to suppress close π-π stacking, thus reducing exciton annihilation, but also rigid enough to prevent excessive conformational flipping, thus inhibiting non-radiative decay. Accordingly, a brand-new type of bipolar hosts with a twisted "butterfly-shaped heptagonal acceptor (EtBP), which features an electron-deficient benzophenone fragment with a flexible ethylidene bridge, has been developed. With satisfactory morphological stability and well-balanced hole- and electron-transporting properties, the EtBP-based bipolar hosts enable high-performance RGB phosphorescent OLEDs with small efficiency roll-off, which are superior to those of acyclic benzophenone-based devices.

Abstract
Through-space charge-transfer (TSCT) emitters have been extensively explored for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), but arranging various donors and acceptors into rigid cofacial conformations for various efficient TSCT TADF emitters has remained challenging. Here, we report a "fixing acceptor" design to reach various efficient TSCT TADF emitters. By chemically fixing the acceptor (benzophenone) with a rigid spiro-structure and cofacially aligning various donors with the fixed acceptor, a series of efficient TSCT TADF emitters have been developed. Single-crystal structures and theoretical calculations have verified closely packed cofacial donor/acceptor conformations and favorable TSCT in the emitters. In doped films, the emitters afford sky blue to yellow TADF emission, with high photoluminescence efficiencies up to 0.92 and reverse intersystem crossing rates up to 1.0 × 106 s-1. Organic light-emitting diodes using the emitters afford sky blue to yellow electroluminescence with high external quantum efficiencies up to 20.9%. The work opens a new avenue toward a wide variety of efficient TSCT TADF emitters.

Abstract
The installation of (benzo)thiophene-containing biaryls via coupling reactions has become a staple in designing photoelectric materials. Undeniably, C-H/C-H cross-coupling reactions between two (hetero)aromatics would be a shortcut toward these structural fragments. While more reliable cross-coupling technologies are well-established to provide C2-arylated (benzo)thiophenes, efficient methods that arylate the C3-position remain underdeveloped. Herein we provide insight into the factors that determine regioselectivity switching for these cross-coupling reactions. X-ray crystallographic analysis gives solid evidence for the key roles of triflate in regioselective dearomatization and acetate in base-assisted anti-β-deprotonated rearomatization. The first isolation and X-ray characterization of a medium-sized dearomatized cyclometalated adduct involving both substrates provide extra insight into aerobic oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H cross-coupling reactions. The mechanistic breakthrough incubates the first example, enabling C-H/C-H-type C3-arylation of benzothiophenes. Finally, this chemistry is used to design blue-emitting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials with a helicene conformation that exhibit a high maximum external quantum efficiency of 25.4% in OLED.
