Discharge-Induced Enhancement of the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Electron Accumulation Induced by Electron Injection-Incomplete Discharge on NiFe LDH for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Optimizing the local electronic structure of electrocatalysts can effectively lower the energy barrier of electrochemical reactions, thus enhancing the electrocatalytic activity. However, the intrinsic contribution of the electronic effect is still experimentally unclear. In this work, the electron injection-incomplete discharge approach to achieve the electron accumulation (EA) degree on the nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) is proposed, to reveal the intrinsic contribution of EA toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Such NiFe LDH with EA effect results in only 262 mV overpotential to reach 50 mA cm-2, which is 51 mV-lower compared with pristine NiFe LDH (313 mV), and reduced Tafel slope of 54.8 mV dec-1 than NiFe LDH (107.5 mV dec-1). Spectroscopy characterizations combined with theoretical calculations confirm that the EA near concomitant Vo can induce a narrower energy gap and lower thermodynamic barrier to enhance OER performance. This study clarifies the mechanism of the EA effect on OER activity, providing a direct electronic structure modulation guideline for effective electrocatalyst design.

Bifunctional oxygen reduction/evolution reaction electrocatalysts achieved by axial ligand modulation on two-dimensional porphyrin frameworks

Exploring efficient and low-cost oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reaction (ORR/OER) bifunctional catalysts is essential for the development of energy storage and conversion devices. Herein, enlightened by the experimentally synthesized cobalt(II) meso-tetraethynylporphyrins (Co-TEP) molecule, we designed a novel 2D covalent organic framework (COF), namely a 2D Co-TEP monolayer, by dimensional expansion. The 2D Co-TEP monolayer, with Co atoms distributed separately and stabilized by uniform pyrrolic-N coordination, features metal-nitrogen-carbon single-atom catalyst activity and shows tunable catalytic activity for the electrochemical ORR/OER by axial ligand (O, OH, Cl, CN, CH3, NO, F) modulation. By means of the state-of-the-art constant-potential first-principles computations and microkinetic simulations, we demonstrated that 2D Co-TEP-CN exhibits good ORR/OER performance in both acidic and alkaline conditions. The difference between the onset-potential for the OER and the half-wave potential for the ORR is only 0.85 V at pH = 1, smaller than that of Pt/IrO2 electrocatalysts. The good electrocatalytic performance is maintained by replacing the center metal atoms with Mn, Fe and/or Ni. Our investigation highlights the role of the pyrrolic-N coordination and the ligands in improving the catalytic activity of 2D COFs and provides new insights into the rational design of efficient bifunctional ORR/OER catalysts.

Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Overall and Hybrid Water Splitting

Electrocatalytic water splitting driven by renewable electricity has been recognized as a promising approach for green hydrogen production. Different from conventional strategies in developing electrocatalysts for the two half-reactions of water splitting (e.g., the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, HER and OER) separately, there has been a growing interest in designing and developing bifunctional electrocatalysts, which are able to catalyze both the HER and OER. In addition, considering the high overpotentials required for OER while limited value of the produced oxygen, there is another rapidly growing interest in exploring alternative oxidation reactions to replace OER for hybrid water splitting toward energy-efficient hydrogen generation. This Review begins with an introduction on the fundamental aspects of water splitting, followed by a thorough discussion on various physicochemical characterization techniques that are frequently employed in probing the active sites, with an emphasis on the reconstruction of bifunctional electrocatalysts during redox electrolysis. The design, synthesis, and performance of diverse bifunctional electrocatalysts based on noble metals, nonprecious metals, and metal-free nanocarbons, for overall water splitting in acidic and alkaline electrolytes, are thoroughly summarized and compared. Next, their application toward hybrid water splitting is also presented, wherein the alternative anodic reactions include sacrificing agents oxidation, pollutants oxidative degradation, and organics oxidative upgrading. Finally, a concise statement on the current challenges and future opportunities of bifunctional electrocatalysts for both overall and hybrid water splitting is presented in the hope of guiding future endeavors in the quest for energy-efficient and sustainable green hydrogen production.

Nitriding-reduction fabrication of coralloid CoN/Ni/NiO for efficient electrocatalytic overall water splitting

The introduction of nitride in Ni/NiO-based catalytic system for electrocatalystic water splitting via a skillful strategy remains a great challenge. Herein, we proposed a one-step urea nitriding-reduction strategy for the fabrication of novel CoN/Ni/NiO electrocatalyst on carbon cloth (CC). The combination of CoN and Ni/NiO could construct CoN/Ni interface and expose more active sites, thus exhibiting excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in alkaline media. Consequently, CoN/Ni/NiO catalyst exhibited remarkable HER/OER performance with an overpotential of 92 mV/114 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH, along with a low cell voltage of 1.56 V to enhance overall water splitting. In addition, when CoN was introduced in Ni/NiO system, CoN/Ni/NiO displayed high conductivity, large active surface areas, high Faradic efficiency (FE) and remarkable stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that CoN/Ni/NiO possessed a decreased d-band center beneficial for optimizing the energy barrier of intermediates. Specifically, the ΔGH2O (0.088 eV) and ΔGH* (0.18 eV) in HER and the ΔGOOH* (1.4 eV) of rate determining step (O*→OOH*) in OER of CoN/Ni/NiO catalyst were optimized to achieve high water splitting activity. Simultaneously, for adsorbed H2O on CoN/Ni/NiO, the OH bond length extended from 0.975 to 1.110 Å, and the bond angle enlarged from 104.271 to 109.471°, thereby directly demonstrating the excellent HER/OER performance of CoN/Ni/NiO.

High-Density NiCu Bimetallic Phosphide Nanosheet Clusters Constructed by Cu-Induced Effect Boost Total Urea Hydrolysis for Hydrogen Production

The development of urea electrolysis technologies toward energy-saving hydrogen production can alleviate the environmental issues caused by urea-rich wastewater. In the current practices, the development of high-performance electrocatalysts in urea electrolysis remains critical. In this work, the NiCu-P/NF catalyst is prepared by anchoring Ni/Cu bimetallic phosphide nanosheets onto Ni foam (NF). In the experiments, the micron-sized elemental Cu polyhedron is first anchored on the surface of the NF substrate to provide more space for the growth of bimetallic nanosheets. Meanwhile, the Cu element adjusted the electron distribution within the composite and formed Ni/P orbital vacancies, which in turn accelerated the kinetic process. As a result, the optimal NiCu-P/NF sample exhibits excellent catalytic activity and cycling stability in a hybrid electrolysis system for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Further, the alkaline urea-containing electrolyzer is assembled with NiCu-P/NF as two electrodes reached a current density of 50 mA cm^-2 with a low driving potential of 1.422 V, which outperforms the typical commercial noble metal electrolyzer (RuO₂||Pt/C). Those findings suggest the feasibility of the substrate regulation strategy to increase the growth density of active species in preparation of an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for cracking the urea-containing wastewater.

Reconstructured Electrocatalysts during Oxygen Evolution Reaction under Alkaline Electrolytes

The development of electrocatalysts with high-efficiency and clear structure-activity relationship towards the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for the wide application of water electrolyzers. Recently, the dynamic reconstruction phenomenon of the catalysts' surface structures during the OER process has been discovered. With the help of various advanced ex situ and in situ characterization, it is demonstrated that such surface reconstruction could yield actual active species to catalyze the water oxidation process. However, the attention and studies of potential interaction between reconstructed species and substrate are lacking. This review summarizes the recent development of typical reconstructed electrocatalysts and the substrate effect. First, the advanced characterization for electrocatalytic reconstruction is briefly discussed. Then, typical reconstructed electrocatalysts are comprehensively summarized and the key role of substrate effects during the OER process is emphasized. Finally, the future challenges and perspectives of surface reconstructed catalysts for water electrolysis are discussed.

Crystalline-Dependent Discharge Process of Locally Enhanced Electrooxidation Activity on Ni2P

The state-of-the-art transition-based electrocatalysts in alkaline media generally suffer from unavoidable surface reconstruction during oxygen evolution reaction measurements, leading to the collapse and loss of the crystalline matrix. Low potential discharge offers a gentle way for surface reconstruction and thus realizes the manipulation of the real active site. Nevertheless, the absence of a fundamental understanding focus on this discharge region renders the functional phase, either the crystalline or amorphous matrix, for the controllable reconstruction still undecidable. Herein, we report a scenario to employ different crystalline matrices as electrocatalysts for discharge region reconstruction. The representative low crystalline Ni₂P (LC-Ni₂P) possesses a relatively weak surface structure compared with highly crystalline or amorphous Ni₂P (HC-Ni₂P or A-Ni₂P), which contributes abundant oxygen vacancies after the discharge process. The fast discharge behavior of LC-Ni₂P leads to the uniform distribution of these vacancies and thus endows the inner interface with reactant activating functionality. A high increase in current density of 36.7% is achieved at 2.32 V (vs RHE) for the LC-Ni₂P electrode. The understanding of the discharge behavior in this study, on different crystalline matrices, presents insights into the establishment of controllable surface reconstruction for an effective oxygen evolution reaction.

Revealing the surface structure-performance relationship of interface-engineered NiFe alloys for oxygen evolution reaction

NiFe alloys are among the most promising electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, a comprehensive study is yet to be done to reveal the surface structure-performance relationship of NiFe alloys. In particular, the role of the ultrathin surface oxide layer, which is unavoidable for pure NiFe alloys, is always neglected. Herein, a series of NiFe alloys with different Ni/Fe ratios are fabricated. It is found that different Ni/Fe ratios lead to significant differences in surface composition and structure of the NiFe alloys, and thus affect their catalytic performance. Then, the oxide/metal interface of the Ni₄Fe₁ alloy is tailored by adjusting the hydrogenation temperature to further understand the surface structure-activity relationship, and the optimal OER performance is achieved at the oxide/metal interfaces that have suitable surface Fe/Ni ratio and an appropriate amount of oxygen vacancies. In-situ Raman characterization shows that the Ni₄Fe₁ alloy with well-tailored oxide/metal interface facilitates the formation of active species. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the ultrathin surface oxide layers are responsible for the high catalytic activity of the NiFe alloys, and that the quantity of oxygen vacancies in the surface oxides affects the adsorption energy of O* and thus to a great extent determines the catalytic activity.

Intermolecular Energy Gap-Induced Formation of High-Valent Cobalt Species in CoOOH Surface Layer on Cobalt Sulfides for Efficient Water Oxidation

Transition metal-based electrocatalysts will undergo surface reconstruction to form active oxyhydroxide-based hybrids, which are regarded as the "true-catalysts" for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Much effort has been devoted to understanding the surface reconstruction, but little on identifying the origin of the enhanced performance derived from the substrate effect. Herein, we report the electrochemical synthesis of amorphous CoOOH layers on the surface of various cobalt sulfides (CoS_α ), and identify that the reduced intermolecular energy gap (Δ_inter ) between the valence band maximum (VBM) of CoOOH and the conduction band minimum (CBM) of CoS_α can accelerate the formation of OER-active high-valent Co⁴⁺ species. The combination of electrochemical and in situ spectroscopic approaches, including cyclic voltammetry (CV), operando electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Raman, reveals that Co species in the CoOOH/Co₉ S₈ are more readily oxidized to CoO₂ /Co₉ S₈ than in CoOOH and other CoOOH/CoS_α . This work provides a new design principle for transition metal-based OER electrocatalysts.

Phase-Reconfiguration-Induced NiS/NiFe2 O4 Composite for Performance-Enhanced Zinc-Air Batteries

Constructing composite structures is an essential approach for obtaining multiple functionalities in a single entity. Available synthesis methods of the composites need to be urgently exploited; especially in situ construction. Here, a NiS/NiFe₂ O₄ composite through a local metal-S coordination at the interface is reported, which is derived from phase reconstruction in the highly defective matrix. X-ray absorption fine structure confirms that long-range order is broken via the local metal-S coordination and, by using electron energy loss spectroscopy, the introduction of NiS/NiFe₂ O₄ interfaces during the irradiation of plasma energy is identified. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that in situ phase reconfiguration is crucial for synergistically reducing energetic barriers and accelerating reaction kinetics toward catalyzing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As a result; it leads to an overpotential of 230 mV @10 mA cm^-2 for the OER and a half-wave potential of 0.81 V for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR); as well as an excellent zinc-air battery (ZAB) performance with a power density of 148.5 mW cm^-2 . This work provides a new compositing strategy in terms of fast phase reconstruction of bifunctional catalysts.
