A Family of Heterobimetallic Cubes Shows Spin-Crossover Behaviour Near Room Temperature

Proton-Induced Reversible Spin-State Switching in Octanuclear FeIII Spin-Crossover Metal-Organic Cages

Responsive spin-crossover (SCO) metal-organic cages (MOCs) are emerging dynamic platforms with potential for advanced applications in magnetic sensing and molecular switching. Among these, FeIII-based MOCs are particularly noteworthy for their air stability, yet they remain largely unexplored. Herein, we report the synthesis of two novel FeIII MOCs using a bis-bidentate ligand approach, which exhibit SCO activity above room temperature. These represent the first SCO-active FeIII cages and feature an atypical {FeN6}-type coordination sphere, uncommon for FeIII SCO compounds. Our study reveals that these MOCs are sensitive to acid/base variations, enabling reversible magnetic switching in solution. The presence of multiple active proton sites within these SCO-MOCs facilitates multisite, multilevel proton-induced spin-state modulation. This behavior is observed at room temperature through 1H NMR spectroscopy, capturing the subtle proton-induced spin-state transitions triggered by pH changes. Further insights from extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and theoretical analyses indicate that these magnetic alterations primarily result from the protonation and deprotonation processes at the NH active sites on the ligands. These processes induce changes in the secondary coordination sphere, thereby modulating the magnetic properties of the cages. The capability of these FeIII MOCs to integrate magnetic responses with environmental stimuli underscores their potential as finely tunable magnetic sensors and highlights their versatility as molecular switches. This work paves the way for the development of SCO-active materials with tailored properties for applications in sensing and molecular switching.

54 K Spin Transition Temperature Shift in a Fe6L4 Octahedral Cage Induced by Optimal Fitted Multiple Guests

Spin-crossover (SCO) coordination cages are at the forefront of research for their potential in crafting next-generation molecular devices. However, due to the scarcity of SCO hosts and their own limited cavities, the interplay between the SCO host and the multiple guests binding has remained elusive. In this contribution, we present a family of pseudo-octahedral coordination cages (M6L4, M = ZnII, CoII, FeII, and NiII) assembled from a tritopic tridentate ligand L with metal ions. The utilization of FeII ion leads to the successful creation of the Fe6L4-type SCO cage. Host-guest studies of these M6L4 cages reveal their capacity to encapsulate four adamantine-based guests. Notably, the spin transition temperature T1/2 of Fe6L4 is dependent on the multiple guests encapsulated. The inclusion of adamantine yields an unprecedented T1/2 shift of 54 K, a record shift in guest-mediated SCO coordination cages to date. This drastic shift is ascribed to the synergistic effect of multiple guests coupled with their optimal fit within the host. Through a straightforward thermodynamic cycle, the binding affinities of the high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states are separated from their apparent binding constant. This result indicates that the LS state has a stronger binding affinity for the multiple guests than the HS state. Exploring the SCO thermodynamics of host-guest complexes allows us to examine the optimal fit of multiple guests to the host cavity. This study reveals that the T1/2 of the SCO host can be manipulated by the encapsulation of multiple guests, and the SCO cage is an ideal candidate for determining the multiple guest fit.

Steric and Geometrical Frustration Generate Two Higher-Order CuI12L8 Assemblies from a Triaminotriptycene Subcomponent

The use of copper(I) in metal-organic assemblies leads readily to the formation of simple grids and helicates, whereas higher-order structures require complex ligand designs. Here, we report the clean and selective syntheses of two complex and structurally distinct CuI12L8 frameworks, 1 and 2, which assemble from the same simple triaminotriptycene subcomponent and a formylpyridine around the CuI templates. Both represent new structure types. In T-symmetric 1, the copper(I) centers describe a pair of octahedra with a common center but whose vertices are offset from each other, whereas in D3-symmetric 2, the metal ions form a distorted hexagonal prism. The syntheses of these architectures illustrate how more intricate CuI-based complexes can be prepared via subcomponent self-assembly than has been possible to date through consideration of the interplay between the subcomponent geometry and solvent and electronic effects.

Heterometallic cages: synthesis and applications

High symmetry metallosupramolecular architectures (MSAs) have been exploited for a range of applications including molecular recognition, catalysis and drug delivery. Recently there have been increasing efforts to enhance those applications by generating reduced symmetry MSAs. While there are several emerging methods for generating lower symmetry MSAs, this tutorial review examines the general methods used for synthesizing heterometallic MSAs with a particular focus on heterometallic cages. Additionally, the intrinsic properties of the cages and their potential emerging applications as host-guest systems and reaction catalysts are described.

Tuning the spin-crossover properties of FeII4L6 cages via the interplay of coordination motif and linker modifications

Despite the increasing number of spin-crossover FeII-based cages, the interplay between ligand modifications (e.g. coordination motif substituents and linker) is not well-understood in these multinuclear systems, limiting rational design. Here, we report a family of FeII4L6 spin-crossover cages based on 2,2'-pyridylbenzimidazoles where subtle ligand modifications lowered the spin crossover temperature in CD3CN by up to 186 K. Comparing pairs of cages, CH3 substituents on either the coordination motif or phenylene linker lowered the spin-crossover temperature by 48 K, 91 K or 186 K, attributed to electronic effects, steric effects and a combination of both, respectively. The understanding of the interplay between ligand modifications gained from this study could be harnessed on the path towards the improved rational design of spin-crossover cages.

Transition Temperature for Spin-Crossover Materials with the Mean Value Ensemble Hubbard-U Correction

Calculation of transition temperatures T1/2 for thermally driven spin-crossover in condensed phases is challenging, even with sophisticated state-of-the-art density functional approximations. The first issue is the accuracy of the adiabatic crossover energy difference ΔEHL between the low- and high-spin states of the bistable metal-organic complexes. The other is the proper inclusion of entropic contributions to the Gibbs free energy from the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom. We discuss the effects of treatments of both contributions upon the calculation of thermochemical properties for a set of 20 spin-crossover materials using a Hubbard-U correction obtained from a reference ensemble spin-state. The U values obtained from a simplest bimolecular representation may overcorrect, somewhat, the ΔEHL values, hence giving somewhat excessive reduction of the T1/2 results with respect to their U = 0 values in the crystalline phase. We discuss the origins of the discrepancies by analyzing different sources of uncertainties. By use of a first-coordination-sphere approximation and the assumption that vibrational contributions from the outermost atoms in a metal-organic complex are similar in both low- and high-spin states, we achieve T1/2 results with the low-cost, widely used PBE generalized gradient density functional approximation comparable to those from the more costly, more sophisticated r2SCAN meta-generalized gradient approximation. The procedure is promising for use in high-throughput materials screening, because it combines rather low computational effort requirements with freedom from user manipulation of parameters.

Confinement inside MOFs Enables Guest-Modulated Spin Crossover of Otherwise Low-Spin Coordination Cages

Confinement of discrete coordination cages within nanoporous lattices is an intriguing strategy to gain unusual properties and functions. We demonstrate here that the confinement of coordination cages within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) allows the spin state of the cages to be regulated through multilevel host-guest interactions. In particular, the confined in situ self-assembly of an anionic FeII4L6 nanocage within the mesoporous cationic framework of MIL-101 leads to the ionic MOF with an unusual hierarchical host-guest structure. While the nanocage in solution and in the solid state has been known to be invariantly diamagnetic with low-spin FeII, FeII4L6@MIL-101 exhibits spin-crossover (SCO) behavior in response to temperature and release/uptake of water guest within the MOF. The distinct color change concomitant with water-induced SCO enables the use of the material for highly selective colorimetric sensing of humidity. Moreover, the spin state and the SCO behavior can be modulated also by inclusion of a guest into the hydrophobic cavity of the confined cage. This is an essential demonstration of the phenomenon that the confinement within porous solids enables an SCO-inactive cage to show modulable SCO behaviors, opening perspectives for developing functional supramolecular materials through hierarchical host-guest structures.

Synthesis of an Adaptable Molecular Barrel and Guest Mediated Stabilization of Its Metastable Higher Homologue

Structural and functional modulation of three-dimensional artificial macromolecular systems is of immense importance. Designing supramolecular cages that can show stimuli mediated reversible switching between higher-order structures is quite challenging. We report here construction of a Pd₆ trifacial barrel (1) by coordination self-assembly. Surprisingly, barrel 1 was found to exhibit guest-responsive behavior. In presence of fullerenes C₆₀ and C₇₀, 1 unprecedentedly transformed to its metastable higher homologue Pd₈ tetrafacial barrel (2), forming stable host-guest complexes (C₆₀)₃⊂2 and (C₇₀)₂⊂2, respectively. Again, encapsulated fullerenes could be extracted from the cavity of 2 using 1,2-dichlorobenzene, leading to its facile conversion to the parent trifacial barrel 1. Such reversible structural interconversion between an adaptable molecular barrel and its guest stabilized higher homologue is an uncommon observation.

Site Selectivity for the Spin States and Spin Crossover in Undecanuclear Heterometallic Cyanido-Bridged Clusters

Polynuclear molecular clusters offer an opportunity to design new hierarchical switchable materials with collective properties, based on variation of the chemical composition, size, shapes, and overall building blocks organization. In this study, we rationally designed and constructed an unprecedented series of cyanido-bridged nanoclusters realizing new undecanuclear topology: Fe^II[Fe^II(bzbpen)]₆[W^V(CN)₈]₂[W^IV(CN)₈]₂·18MeOH (1), Na^I[Co^II(bzbpen)]₆[W^V(CN)₈]₃[W^IV(CN)₈]·28MeOH (2), Na^I[Ni^II(bzbpen)]₆[W^V(CN)₈]₃[W^IV(CN)₈]·27MeOH (3), and Co^II[Co^II(R/S-pabh)₂]₆[W^V(CN)₈]₂[W^IV(CN)₈]₂·26MeOH [4R and 4S; bzbpen = N¹,N²-dibenzyl-N¹,N²-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine; R/S-pabh = (R/S)-N-(1-naphthyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)methanimine], of size up to 11 nm³, ca. 2.0 × 2.2 × 2.5 nm (1-3) and ca. 1.4 × 2.5 × 2.5 nm (4). 1, 2, and 4 exhibit site selectivity for the spin states and spin transition related to the structural speciation based on subtle exogenous and endogenous effects imposed on similar but distinguishable 3d metal-ion-coordination moieties. 1 exhibits a mid-temperature-range spin-crossover (SCO) behavior that is more advanced than the previously reported SCO clusters based on octacyanidometallates and an onset of SCO behavior close to room temperature. The latter feature is also present in 2 and 4, which suggests the emergence of Co^II-centered SCO not observed in previous bimetallic cyanido-bridged Co^II-W^V/IV systems. In addition, reversible switching of the SCO behavior in 1 via a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation during desolvation was also documented.

Tetramine Aspect Ratio and Flexibility Determine Framework Symmetry for Zn8 L6 Self-Assembled Structures

We derive design principles for the assembly of rectangular tetramines into Zn8 L6 pseudo-cubic coordination cages. Because of the rectangular, as opposed to square, geometry of the ligand panels, and the possibility of either Δ or Λ handedness of each metal center at the eight corners of the pseudo-cube, many different cage diastereomers are possible. Each of the six tetra-aniline subcomponents investigated in this work assembled with zinc(II) and 2-formylpyridine in acetonitrile into a single Zn8 L6 pseudo-cube diastereomer, however. Each product corresponded to one of four diastereomeric configurations, with T, Th , S6 or D3 symmetry. The preferred diastereomer for a given tetra-aniline subcomponent was shown to be dependent on its aspect ratio and conformational flexibility. Analysis of computationally modeled individual faces or whole pseudo-cubes provided insight as to why the observed diastereomers were favored.

Di-Iron(II) [2+2] Helicates of Bis-(Dipyrazolylpyridine) Ligands: The Influence of the Ligand Linker Group on Spin State Properties

Four bis[2-{pyrazol-1-yl}-6-{pyrazol-3-yl}pyridine] ligands have been synthesized, with butane-1,4-diyl (L¹ ), pyrid-2,6-diyl (L² ), benzene-1,2-dimethylenyl (L³ ) and propane-1,3-diyl (L⁴ ) linkers between the tridentate metal-binding domains. L¹ and L² form [Fe₂ (μ-L)₂ ]X₄ (X^- =BF₄ ^- or ClO₄ ^- ) helicate complexes when treated with the appropriate iron(II) precursor. Solvate crystals of [Fe₂ (μ-L¹ )₂ ][BF₄ ]₄ exhibit three different helicate conformations, which differ in the torsions of their butanediyl linker groups. The solvates exhibit gradual thermal spin-crossover, with examples of stepwise switching and partial spin-crossover to a low-temperature mixed-spin form. Salts of [Fe₂ (μ-L² )₂ ]⁴⁺ are high-spin, which reflects their highly twisted iron coordination geometry. The composition and dynamics of assembly structures formed by iron(II) with L¹ -L³ vary with the ligand linker group, by mass spectrometry and ¹ H NMR spectroscopy. Gas-phase DFT calculations imply the butanediyl linker conformation in [Fe₂ (μ-L¹ )₂ ]⁴⁺ influences its spin state properties, but show anomalies attributed to intramolecular electrostatic repulsion between the iron atoms.

Thermo- and photo-induced electron transfer in a series of [Fe2Co2] capsules

Recently, a family of [Fe₂Co₂] molecular capsules that display tunable electron transfer-coupled spin transition (ETCST) behavior were reported via a smart approach through Schiff-base condensation of aldehyde-functionalized 2,2-bipyridines (bpy^CHO) and 1,7-heptanediamine (H₂N(CH₂)₇NH₂). Here, three more capsule complexes {[(Tp^R)Fe(CN)₃]₂[Co(bpy^{CN(CH₂)_nNC}bpy)]₂[ClO₄]₂}·n(solvent) (1, Tp^R = Tp*, n = 5, sol = 8DMF; 2, Tp^R = Tp^Me, n = 9, sol = 5MeCN; and 3, Tp^R = Tp*, n = 11, sol = 5MeCN), where Tp* = hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate and Tp^Me = hydridotris(3-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate are reported, demonstrating a successful extension of such an approach with other alkyldiamines of different lengths. Combined X-ray crystallographic, infrared spectroscopic and magnetic studies reveal incomplete electron transfer with either changing temperature or upon light exposure.

Metallic–Organic Cages (MOCs) with Heterometallic Character: Flexibility-Enhancing MOFs

The dichotomy between metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal–organic cages (MOCs) opens up the research spectrum of two fields which, despite having similarities, both have their advantages and disadvantages. Due to the fact that they have cavities inside, they also have applicability in the porosity sector. Bloch and coworkers within this evolution from MOFs to MOCs manage to describe a MOC with a structure of Cu2 paddlewheel Cu4L4 (L = bis(pyrazolyl)methane) with high precision thanks to crystallographic analyses of X-ray diffraction and also SEM-EDX. Then, also at the same level of concreteness, they were able to find the self-assembly of Pd(II)Cl2 moieties on the available nitrogen donor atoms leading to a [Cu4(L(PdCl2))4] structure. Here, calculations of the DFT density functional allow us to reach an unusual precision given the magnitude and structural complexity, explaining how a pyrazole ring of each bis(pyprazolyl)methane ligand must rotate from an anti to a syn conformation, and a truncation of the MOC structure allows us to elucidate, in the absence of the MOC constraint and its packing in the crystal, that the rotation is almost barrierless, as well as also explain the relative stability of the different conformations, with the anti being the most stable conformation. Characterization calculations with Mayer bond orders (MBO) and noncovalent interaction (NCI) plots discern what is important in the interaction of this type of cage with PdCl2 moieties, also CuCl2 by analogy, as well as simple molecules of water, since the complex is stable in this solvent. However, the L ligand is proved to not have the ability to stabilize an H2O molecule.

Iron(II) Mediated Supramolecular Architectures with Schiff Bases and Their Spin-Crossover Properties

Supramolecular architectures, which are formed through the combination of inorganic metal cations and organic ligands by self-assembly, are one of the techniques in modern chemical science. This kind of multi-nuclear system in various dimensionalities can be implemented in various applications such as sensing, storage/cargo, display and molecular switching. Iron(II) mediated spin-crossover (SCO) supramolecular architectures with Schiff bases have attracted the attention of many investigators due to their structural novelty as well as their potential application possibilities. In this paper, we review a number of supramolecular SCO architectures of iron(II) with Schiff base ligands exhibiting varying geometrical possibilities. The structural and SCO behavior of these complexes are also discussed in detail.

Spin Crossover Induced by Changing the Identity of the Secondary Metal Ion from PdII to NiII in a Face-Centered FeII 8 MII 6 Cubic Cage

Discrete spin crossover (SCO) heteronuclear cages are a rare class of materials which have potential use in next-generation molecular transport and catalysis. Previous investigations of cubic cage [Fe₈ Pd₆ L₈ ]²⁸⁺ constructed using semi-rigid metalloligands, found that Fe^II centers of the cage did not undergo spin transition. In this work, substitution of the secondary metal center at the face of the cage resulted in SCO behavior, evidenced by magnetic susceptibility, Mössbauer spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural comparisons of these two cages shed light on the possible interplay of inter- and intramolecular interactions associated with SCO in the Ni^II analogue, 1 ([Fe₈ Ni₆ L₈ (CH₃ CN)₁₂ ]²⁸⁺ ). The distorted octahedral coordination environment, as well as the occupation of the CH₃ CN in the Ni^II axial positions of 1, prevented close packing of cages observed in the Pd^II analogue. This led to offset, distant packing arrangements whereby important areas within the cage underwent dramatic structural changes with the exhibition of SCO.

Subcomponent self-assembly of circular helical Dy6(L)6 and bipyramid Dy12(L)8 architectures directed via second-order template effects

In situ metal-templated (hydrazone) condensation also called subcomponent self-assembly of 4,6-dihydrazino-pyrimidine, o-vanillin and dysprosium ions resulted in the formation of discrete hexa- or dodecanuclear metallosupramolecular Dy6(L)6 or Dy12(L)8 aggregates resulting from second-order template effects of the base and the lanthanide counterions used in these processes. XRD analysis revealed unique circular helical or tetragonal bipyramid architectures in which the bis(hydrazone) ligand L adopts different conformations and shows remarkable differences in its mode of metal coordination. While a molecule of trimethylamine acts as a secondary template that fills the void of the Dy6(L)6 assembly, sodium ions take on this role for the formation of heterobimetallic Dy12(L)8 by occupying vacant coordination sites, thus demonstrating that these processes can be steered in different directions upon subtle changes of reaction conditions. Furthermore, Dy6(L)6 shows an interesting spin-relaxation energy barrier of 435 K, which is amongst the largest values within multinuclear lanthanide single-molecular magnets.

Assembly of a Heterometallic Cu(II)-Pd(II) Cage by Post-assembly Metal Insertion

Porous structures based on multi-metallic motifs are receiving growing interest, but their general preparation still remains a challenge. Here, we report the self-assembly and structure of a Cu^II metal-organic cage (MOC) that is functionalized with free bis(pyrazolyl)methane sites. The homometallic Cu₄L₄ cage is isolated as a water-stable crystalline solid, and its formation is dependent on metal-ligand stoichiometry and the pre-organization of the Cu₂ paddlewheel. We show by X-ray diffraction and SEM-EDX that Pd^II chloride can be quantitatively inserted into the free chelating sites of the MOC to yield a [Cu₄(L(PdCl₂))₄] structure. Moreover, the solvent employed in the metalation dictates the solid-state isomerism of the heterometallic cage─a further handle to control the MOC's structural diversity and permanent porosity.

Conformation-Selective Self-Assembly of Pd6 Trifacial Molecular Barrels Using a Tetrapyridyl Ligand

A conformationally flexible tetrapyridyl ligand L was assembled separately with three cis-blocked 90° Pd^II acceptors (M1, M2, and M3) containing different blocking diamines. Surprisingly, different conformations of the donor L were arrested by the acceptors depending on the nature of the blocking amine, leading to the formation of isomeric Pd₆ barrels (B1, B2, and B3). B2 and B3 with larger windows have been used to encapsulate polyaromatic hydrocarbons.

Cation modulated spin state and near room temperature transition within a family of compounds containing the same [FeL2]2- center

Spin-crossover (SCO) active compounds have received much attention due to their potential application in molecular devices. Herein, a family of solvent-free Fe^II compounds, formulated as (A)₂[FeL₂], (H₂L = pyridine-2,6-bi-tetrazolate, A = (Me)₄N⁺1, Et₂NH₂⁺2, ⁱPr₂NH₂⁺3 and ⁱPrNH₃⁺4), were synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that 1-4 are all supramolecular frameworks containing the same [FeL₂]^2- center, which is arranged into two packing modes via inter-molecular interactions, that is, a 3D architecture in 1 and 1D chain in 2-4. The spin states of 1-4 at different temperatures are assigned on the basis of the single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. Solid state magnetic investigations indicate that 1 and 4 exhibit a low spin state (below 350 K) and high spin state (2-400 K), respectively. 2 and 3 display clear SCO behavior in the measured temperature, but with different profiles and critical temperatures. 2 undergoes a complete gradual SCO with a critical temperature of T_1/2 = 260 K. 3 has an abrupt near room temperature transition between T_{1/2 cooling} = 278 K and T_{1/2 warming} = 286, centered at 282 K (9 °C). This study reveals the importance of organic cations in the modulation of SCO behavior and offers a new insight for the design of SCO compounds with near room temperature spin transitions.

Heteroleptic tripalladium(II) cages

There is a concerted attempt to develop self-assembled metallo-cages of greater structural complexity, and heteroleptic Pd II cages are emerging as prime candidates in these efforts. Most of these are dinuclear: few examples of higher nuclearity have been reported. We demonstrate here a robust method for the formation of tripalladium(II) cages from the 2:3:3 combination of a tritopic ligand, Pd II , and a selection of ditopic ligands of the correct size and geometry.

A Family of Heterobimetallic Cubes Shows Spin-Crossover Behaviour Near Room Temperature

Using 4-(4'-pyridyl)aniline as a simple organic building block in combination with three different aldehyde components together with metal(II) salts gave three different Fe8 Pt6 -cubes and their corresponding Zn8 Pt6 analogues by employing the subcomponent self-assembly approach. Whereas the use of zinc(II) salts gave rise to diamagnetic cages, iron(II) salts yielded metallosupramolecular cages that show spin-crossover behaviour in solution. The spin-transition temperature T1/2 depends on the incorporated aldehyde component, giving a construction kit for the deliberate synthesis of spin-crossover compounds with tailored transition properties. Incorporation of 4-thiazolecarbaldehyde or N-methyl-2-imidazole-carbaldehyde yielded cages that undergo spin-crossover around room temperature whereas the cage obtained using 1H-4-imidazolecarbaldehyde shows a spin-transition at low temperatures. Three new structures were characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and all structures were characterized by mass spectrometry, NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy.
