Synergetic Cobalt-Copper-Based Bimetal-Organic Framework Nanoboxes toward Efficient Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution

A novel chemiluminescence sensor for alpha-fetoprotein detection based on an aptamer-luminol modified magnetic graphene oxide and copper-based MOF composite

Herein, an aptamer-luminol modified magnetic graphene oxide and copper-based MOF composite was prepared and used to build a novel target-triggered "turn on" chemiluminescence (CL) sensor for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) detection. Magnetic graphene oxide (MGO) was functionalized with the complementary sequence of the AFP aptamer (cDNA), and then MGO-cDNA was linked to aptamer modified luminol (Apt-luminol) through the complementary base pairing effect. The functionalized magnetic graphene oxide (MGO-cDNA/Apt-luminol) was prepared as a specific magnetic separation and signal switch material. ZnONPs-Au@CuMOFs shows excellent catalytic performance and was used as a catalyst for the luminol-H2O2 reaction. AFP will specifically recognize and bind to Apt on MGO-cDNA/Apt-luminol when AFP is present, which causes luminol release and triggers the CL reaction. The released luminol encounters ZnONPs-Au@CuMOFs and produces strong CL intensity. Therefore, a novel target-triggered "turn on" CL method with high selectivity and sensitivity for detecting AFP has been established. The linear range and detection limit were 1.0 × 10-4-50 ng mL-1 and 4.2 × 10-5 ng mL-1, respectively. The sensor also exhibited good selectivity, reproducibility and stability, and was finally used for AFP detection in serum samples.

Shape-Preserved CoFeNi-MOF/NF Exhibiting Superior Performance for Overall Water Splitting across Alkaline and Neutral Conditions

This study reported a multi-functional Co0.45Fe0.45Ni0.9-MOF/NF catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and overall water splitting, which was synthesized via a novel shape-preserving two-step hydrothermal method. The resulting bowknot flake structure on NF enhanced the exposure of active sites, fostering a superior electrocatalytic surface, and the synergistic effect between Co, Fe, and Ni enhanced the catalytic activity of the active site. In an alkaline environment, the catalyst exhibited impressive overpotentials of 244 mV and 287 mV at current densities of 50 mA cm-2 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively. Transitioning to a neutral environment, an overpotential of 505 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 was achieved with the same catalyst, showing a superior property compared to similar catalysts. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that Co0.45Fe0.45Ni0.9-MOF/NF shows versatility as a bifunctional catalyst, excelling in both OER and HER, as well as overall water splitting. The innovative shape-preserving synthesis method presented in this study offers a facile method to develop an efficient electrocatalyst for OER under both alkaline and neutral conditions, which makes it a promising catalyst for hydrogen production by water splitting.

Designing Different Heterometallic Organic Frameworks by Heteroatom and Second Metal Doping Strategies for the Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered one of the most significant electrocatalysts for the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Hence, a series of novel N,S-codoped Ni-based heterometallic organic framework (HMOF) (NiM-bptz-HMOF, M = Co, Zn, and Mn; bptz = 2,5-bis((3-pyridyl)methylthio)thiadiazole) precatalysts are constructed by the heteroatom and second metal doping strategies. The effective combination of the two strategies promotes electronic conductivity and optimizes the electronic structure of the metal. By regulation of the type and proportion of metal ions, the electrochemical performance of the OER can be improved. Among them, the optimized Ni6Zn1-bptz-HMOF precatalyst exhibits the best performance with an overpotential of 268 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 72.5 mV dec-1. This work presents a novel strategy for the design of modest heteroatom-doped OER catalysts.

Single-atom platinum with asymmetric coordination environment on fully conjugated covalent organic framework for efficient electrocatalysis

Two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and their derivatives have been widely applied as electrocatalysts owing to their unique nanoscale pore configurations, stable periodic structures, abundant coordination sites and high surface area. This work aims to construct a non-thermodynamically stable Pt-N2 coordination active site by electrochemically modifying platinum (Pt) single atoms into a fully conjugated 2D COF as conductive agent-free and pyrolysis-free electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In addition to maximizing atomic utilization, single-atom catalysts with definite structures can be used to investigate catalytic mechanisms and structure-activity relationships. In this work, in-situ characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that a nitrogen-rich graphene analogue COF not only exhibits a favorable metal-support effect for Pt, adjusting the binding energy between Pt sites to H* intermediates by forming unique Pt-N2 instead of the typical Pt-N4 coordination environment, but also enhances electron transport ability and structural stability, showing both conductivity and stability in acidic environments.

Spatially and Temporally Resolved Dynamic Response of Co-Based Composite Interface during the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Interfacial interaction dictates the overall catalytic performance and catalytic behavior rules of the composite catalyst. However, understanding of interfacial active sites at the microscopic scale is still limited. Importantly, identifying the dynamic action mechanism of the "real" active site at the interface necessitates nanoscale, high spatial-time-resolved complementary-operando techniques. In this work, a Co3O4 homojunction with a well-defined interface effect is developed as a model system to explore the spatial-correlation dynamic response of the interface toward oxygen evolution reaction. Quasi in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy-loss spectroscopy with high spatial resolution visually confirms the size characteristics of the interface effect in the spatial dimension, showing that the activation of active sites originates from strong interfacial electron interactions at a scale of 3 nm. Multiple time-resolved operando spectroscopy techniques explicitly capture dynamic changes in the adsorption behavior for key reaction intermediates. Combined with density functional theory calculations, we reveal that the dynamic adjustment of multiple adsorption configurations of intermediates by highly activated active sites at the interface facilitates the O-O coupling and *OOH deprotonation processes. The dual dynamic regulation mechanism accelerates the kinetics of oxygen evolution and serves as a pivotal factor in promoting the oxygen evolution activity of the composite structure. The resulting composite catalyst (Co-B@Co3O4/Co3O4 NSs) exhibits an approximately 70-fold turnover frequency and 20-fold mass activity than the monomer structure (Co3O4 NSs) and leads to significant activity (η10 ∼257 mV). The visual complementary analysis of multimodal operando/in situ techniques provides us with a powerful platform to advance our fundamental understanding of interfacial structure-activity relationships in composite structured catalysts.

Defective copper-cobalt binuclear Prussian blue analogue nanozymes with high specificity as lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase-mimic via axial ligation of histidine

Degradation of polysaccharides based on lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) has received considerably interest in the environment and energy fields since 2010. With the rapid development of nanozymes in various fields, it is highly desirable but challenging to develop LPMO-like nanozymes with high specificity and satisfied activity. Here, a defective copper-cobalt binuclear Prussian blue analogue (CuCoPBA) nanozyme was developed via a facile and ingenious methodology based on single histidine (His). For the first time, His-CuCoPBA nanozyme was found to exhibit LPMO-like activity with H2O2 as a cosubstrate at room temperature and neutral pH, which can efficiently catalyze the degradation of galactomannans selectively. Significantly, the high degradation activity at pH 10 expands the application of Fenton-like nanozymes in alkaline condition. Singlet oxygen (1O2), as a main reactive intermediate, plays a crucial role in the galactomannan degradation catalyzed by His-CuCoPBA nanozyme. Both control experimental and density functional theory (DFT) results indicate Cu-NxHis contributes to the efficiently and selectively catalytic activity of His-CuCoPBA nanozymes by emulating the binding and catalytic sites of LPMOs. The present work not only represents a fundamental breakthrough toward degradation of polysaccharide based on nanozyme, but also contributes to understanding the catalytic mechanism of natural Cu-dependent LPMOs.

Highly efficient electrochemical detection of H2O2 utilizing an innovative copper porphyrinic nanosheet decorated bismuth metal-organic framework modified electrode

The ability to detect hydrogen peroxide is important due to the presence in biological systems. Researchers are highly interested in developing efficient electrochemical hydrogen peroxide sensors. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with their composites, an emerging class of porous materials, are ideal candidates for heterogeneous catalysts because of their versatile functionalities. Using a facile solvothermal reaction, we fabricated a 2D Cu-TCPP nanosheet uniformly grown on a 3D Bi-MOF. The process takes advantage of the large surface area and pore volume of the Bi-MOF while maintaining the crystallinity of Bi-BTC when Cu-TCPP is added to the surface. The sensor was fabricated by depositing the Bi-BTC-Cu-TCPP nanocomposites on a glassy carbon electrode to conduct electrochemical measurements such as cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Finally, differential pulse voltammetry was utilized to investigate the effect of hydrogen peroxide on the electrochemical activity of Bi-BTC-Cu-TCPP deposited on a glassy carbon electrode. This electrode showed high electrochemical performance activity for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide. The sensor showed a linear response to H2O2 in the 10-120 μM concentration range, with a detection limit of 0.20 μM. The sensor was also stable and selective for H2O2 in the presence of other interfering species. This work demonstrates the potential of nanocomposite-based electrochemical sensors for sensitive and selective detection of H2O2. Besides, the modified electrode has many advantages, including remarkable catalytic activity, long-term stability, good reproducibility, and a good signal response during H2O2 reduction.

A Conductive Two-dimensional Trimetallic FeCoNi-Benzenehexathiol π-d Conjugated Metal-organic Framework for Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The poor electrically conductivity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is the main factor hinder their application in electrocatalysis field. In this work, we synthesize a conductive two-dimensional (2D) trimetallic π-d conjugated metal-organic framework (MOF) FeCoNi-BHT (BHT = 1,2,3,4,5,6-benzenehexathiol) through coordinating Co, Fe and Ni ions with 1,2,3,4,5,6-benzenehexathiol ligands. FeCoNi-BHT is demonstrated possessing homogeneously dispersed abundant Co-S4, Fe-S4, Ni-S4 single-atom active sites (14.26 wt% of the metal elements) and a large specific surface area (267.05 m2g-1). The room temperature conductivity of FeCoNi-BHT is measured to be 92 S m-1, indicating its metallic behavior. DFT theoretical calculation reveals that the π-d conjugation structure of FeCoNi-BHT is responsible for its metallic behavior. In addition, FeCoNi-BHT exhibits prominent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity (an overpotential of 266 mV vs. RHE at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel value of 58 mV dec-1) in alkaline media. The combined experimental and DFT studies reveal that the synergistic effect of Co, Fe, Ni sites of FeCoNi-BHT contribute to its prominent OER activity. This work paves a new avenue of developing 2D π-d conjugated MOFs with different metal centers as highly efficient eletrocatalysts.

Computational-Guided Design of Photoelectrode Active Materials for Light-Assisted Energy Storage

The design of a novel photoelectric integrated system is considered to be an efficient way to utilize and store inexhaustible solar energy. However, the mechanism of photoelectrode under illuminate conditions is still unclear. Density functional theory (DFT) provides standardized analysis and becomes a powerful way to explain the photoelectrochemical mechanism. Herein, the feasibility of four metal oxide configurations as photoelectrode materials by using a high throughput calculation method based on DFT are investigated. According to the photoelectrochemical properties, band structure and density of states are calculated, and the intercalate/deintercalate simulation is performed with adsorption configuration. The calculation indicates that the band gap of Fe2 CoO4 (2.404 eV) is narrower than that of Co3 O4 (2.553 eV), as well as stronger adsorption energy (-3.293 eV). The relationship between the electronic structure and the photoelectrochemical performance is analyzed and verified according to the predicted DFT results by subsequent experiments. Results show that the Fe2 CoO4 photoelectrode samples exhibit higher coulombic efficiency (97.4%) than that under dark conditions (94.9%), which is consistent with the DFT results. This work provides a general method for the design of integrated photoelectrode materials and is expected to be enlightening for the adjustment of light-assisted properties of multifunctional materials.

Preparation of Trimetallic-Organic Framework Film Electrodes via Secondary Growth for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising electrocatalysts for clean energy conversion systems. However, developing MOF-based electrodes with high performance toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is still challenging. In this work, a series of MOF film electrodes derived from Ni-btz were prepared by employing the secondary growth strategy under solvothermal conditions. Fe and Co ions were also incorporated into the Ni-btz framework to produce a trimetallic coupling effect to obtain enhanced OER activity. The as-prepared FeCoNi-btz/NF exhibited not only good stability but also excellent OER performance under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, the possible intermediates including metal oxides and metal oxyhydroxides were confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

A Self-Templated Design Approach toward Multivariate Metal-Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution

Multivariate metal-organic framework (MOF) is an ideal electrocatalytic material due to the synergistic effect of multiple metal active sites. In this study, a series of ternary M-NiMOF (M = Co, Cu) through a simple self-templated strategy that the Co/Cu MOF isomorphically grows in situ on the surface of NiMOF is designed. Owing to the electron rearrange of adjacent metals, the ternary CoCu-NiMOFs demonstrate the improved intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. At optimized conditions, the ternary Co3 Cu-Ni2 MOFs nanosheets give the excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of current density of 10 mA cm-2 at low overpotential of 288 mV with a Tafel slope of 87 mV dec-1 , which is superior to that of bimetallic nanosheet and ternary microflowers. The low free energy change of potential-determining step identifies that the OER process is favorable at Cu-Co concerted sites along with strong synergistic effect of Ni nodes. Partially oxidized metal sites also reduce the electron density, thus accelerating the OER catalytic rate. The self-templated strategy provides a universal tool to design multivariate MOF electrocatalysts for highly efficient energy transduction.

Redox-Active and Urea-Engineered-Entangled MOFs for High-Efficiency Water Oxidation and Elevated Temperature Advanced CO2 Separation Cum Organic-Site-Driven Mild-Condition Cycloaddition

Development of the multifaceted metal-organic framework (MOF) with in situ engineered task-specific sites can promise proficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and high-temperature adsorption cum mild-condition fixation of CO₂. In fact, effective assimilation of these attributes onto a single material with advance performance characteristics is practically imperative in view of renewable energy application and carbon-footprint reduction. Herein, we developed a three-fold interpenetrated robust Co(II) framework that embraces both redox-active and hydrogen-bond donor moieties inside the microporous channel. The activated MOF demonstrates notable OER catalysis in alkaline medium via quasi-reversible Co²⁺/Co³⁺ couple and unveils low overpotential with impressive 53.5 mV/dec Tafel slope that overpowers some benchmark, commercial, as well as contemporary materials. In particular, significantly increased turnover frequency (3.313 s^-1 at 400 mV) and fairly low charge-transfer resistance (3.02 Ω) compared to Co₃O₄, NiO, and majority of redox-active MOFs together with 91% Faradaic efficiency and notable framework durability after multiple OER cycles endorse high-performance water oxidation. Pore-wall decked urea groups benefit appreciable CO₂ adsorption even at elevated temperatures with considerable MOF-CO₂ interactions and exhibit recurrent capture-release cycles at diverse temperatures. Interestingly, CO₂ selectivity displays radical upsurge with temperature rise, affording 40% improved CO₂/N₂ value of 200 at 313 K, which outperforms many porous adsorbents and delineates real-time CO₂ scavenging potential. The guest-free MOF effectively catalyzes solvent-free CO₂ cycloaddition with broad substrate tolerance and satisfactory reusability under relatively mild condition. Opposed to the common Lewis acid-mediated reaction, two-point hydrogen-bonding activates the substrate, as supported from controlled experiments, juxtaposing the performance of an un-functionalized MOF and fluorescence modification-derived framework-epoxide interaction, providing valuable insights on unconventional cycloaddition route in the MOF.

Supporting Trimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks on S/N-Doped Carbon Macroporous Fibers for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Hybrid materials, integrating the merits of individual components, are ideal structures for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the rational construction of hybrid structures with decent physical/electrochemical properties is yet challenging. Herein, a promising OER electrocatalyst composed of trimetallic metal-organic frameworks supported over S/N-doped carbon macroporous fibers (S/N-CMF@Fe_x Co_y Ni_1-x-y -MOF) via a cation-exchange strategy is delicately fabricated. Benefiting from the trimetallic composition with improved intrinsic activity, hollow S/N-CMF matrix facilitating exposure of active sites, as well as their robust integration, the resultant S/N-CMF@Fe_x Co_y Ni_1-x-y -MOF electrocatalyst delivers outstanding activity and stability for alkaline OER. Specifically, it needs an overpotential of 296 mV to reach the benchmark current density of 10 mA cm^-2 with a small Tafel slope of 53.5 mV dec^-1 . In combination with X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, the post-formed Fe/Co-doped γ-NiOOH during the OER operation is revealed to account for the high OER performance of S/N-CMF@Fe_x Co_y Ni_1-x-y -MOF.

Ni3S2/Co9S8 embedded poor crystallinity NiCo layered double hydroxides hierarchical nanostructures for efficient overall water splitting

Nickel-cobalt bimetallic layered double hydroxides (NiCo LDHs) are potential electrocatalysts with high performance and stability for overall water-splitting. However, its weak conductivity limits its practical applications. Herein, a simple hydrothermal in-situ conversion strategy is employed for constructing the novel heterogeneous electrocatalyst of Ni₃S₂/Co₉S₈ embedded poor crystallinity (Pc) NiCo LDH nanosheet arrays grown on the Ni foam (Pc-NiCo LDH/ Ni₃S₂/Co₉S₈), which can improve the conductivity via regulating the crystallinity. The crystallinity of NiCo LDH is well regulated by adjusting the amount of sulfur source, and the construction of Ni₃S₂/Co₉S₈ heterostructure exposes more active sites, improves the electrical conductivity, enhances the electronic interaction between NiCo LDH and Ni₃S₂/Co₉S₈, and significantly promotes the kinetics of water splitting. The optimized Pc-NiCo LDH/Ni₃S₂/Co₉S₈ hierarchical structure as both the anode and cathode exhibit the overall water splitting performance with the cell voltage of only 1.744 V to achieve the current density of 50 mA cm^-2 in the alkaline media and shows the competitive H₂ and O₂ production rate of 6.4 and 3.1 μL s^-1, respectively, suggesting its potential practical applications. This work provides a novel idea for the design of multiphase composite electrocatalysts applied in water splitting.

Ternary alloy (FeCoNi) nanoparticles supported on hollow porous carbon with defects for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Low-cost non-noble metal nanoparticles are promising electrocatalysts that can catalyze oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Various factors such as poor activity and stability hinder the practical applications of these materials. The electroactivity and durability of the electrocatalysts can be improved by optimizing the morphology and composition of the materials. Herein, we report the successful synthesis of hollow porous carbon (HPC) catalysts loaded with ternary alloy (FeCoNi) nanoparticles (HPC-FeCoNi) for efficient OER. HPC is firstly synthesized by a facile carbon deposition method using the hierarchical porous zeolite ZSM-5 as the hard template. Numerous defects are generated on the carbon shell during the removal of zeolite template. Subsequently, FeCoNi alloy nanoparticles are supported on HPC by a sequence of impregnation and H₂ reduction processes. The synergistic effect between carbon defects and FeCoNi alloy nanoparticles endows the catalyst with an excellent OER performance (low overpotential of 219 mV; Tafel slope of 60.1 mV dec^-1) in a solution of KOH (1 M). A stable potential is maintained during the continuous operation over 72 h. The designed HPC-FeCoNi presents a platform for the development of electrocatalysts that can be potentially applied for industrial OER.

Engineering Cu/NiCu LDH Heterostructure Nanosheet Arrays for Highly-Efficient Water Oxidation

The development of stable and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction is of great significance for electro-catalytic water splitting. Bimetallic layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising OER catalysts, in which NiCu LDH has excellent stability compared with the most robust NiFe LDH, but the OER activity is not satisfactory. Here, we designed a NiCu LDH heterostructure electrocatalyst (Cu/NiCu LDH) modified by Cu nanoparticles which has excellent activity and stability. The Cu/NiCu LDH electrocatalyst only needs a low over-potential of 206 mV and a low Tafel slope of 86.9 mV dec^-1 at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and maintains for 70 h at a high current density of 100 mA cm^-2 in 1M KOH. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that there was a strong electronic interaction between Cu nanoparticles and NiCu LDH. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the electronic coupling between Cu nanoparticles and NiCu LDH can effectively improve the intrinsic OER activity by optimizing the conductivity and the adsorption energy of oxygen-containing intermediates.

Synthesis and Peroxide Activation Mechanism of Bimetallic MOF for Water Contaminant Degradation: A Review

Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials possess a large specific surface area, high porosity, and atomically dispersed metal active sites, which confer excellent catalytic performance as peroxide (peroxodisulfate (PDS), peroxomonosulfate (PMS), and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂)) activation catalysts. However, the limited electron transfer characteristics and chemical stability of traditional monometallic MOFs restrict their catalytic performance and large-scale application in advanced oxidation reactions. Furthermore, the single-metal active site and uniform charge density distribution of monometallic MOFs result in a fixed activation reaction path of peroxide in the Fenton-like reaction process. To address these limitations, bimetallic MOFs have been developed to improve catalytic activity, stability, and reaction controllability in peroxide activation reactions. Compared with monometallic MOFs, bimetallic MOFs enhance the active site of the material, promote internal electron transfer, and even alter the activation path through the synergistic effect of bimetals. In this review, we systematically summarize the preparation methods of bimetallic MOFs and the mechanism of activating different peroxide systems. Moreover, we discuss the reaction factors that affect the process of peroxide activation. This report aims to expand the understanding of bimetallic MOF synthesis and their catalytic mechanisms in advanced oxidation processes.

Highly Stable and Efficient Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalyst Based on Co Oxides Decorated with Ultrafine Ru Nanoclusters

Exploring highly active and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is significant to achieve efficient anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis. Herein, hollow Co-based N-doped porous carbon spheres decorated with ultrafine Ru nanoclusters (HS-RuCo/NC) are reported as efficient OER electrocatalysts via the pyrolysis of carboxylate-terminated polystyrene-templated bimetallic zeolite imidazolate frameworks accommodating Ru (III) ions. The unique hollow structure with hierarchically porous characteristics contributes to the electrolyte penetration for fast mass transport and the exposure of more metal sites. Theoretical and experimental studies reveal the synergistic effect between the in situ formed RuO₂ and Co₃ O₄ as another critical factor for the high OER performance, where the coupling of RuO₂ with Co₃ O₄ can optimize the electronic configuration of RuO₂ /Co₃ O₄ heterostructure and decrease the energy barrier during OER. Meanwhile, the presence of Co₃ O₄ can efficiently suppress the over-oxidation of RuO₂ , endowing the catalysts with high stability. As expected, when the resultant HS-RuCo/NC was integrated into an AEM water electrolyzer, the obtained electrolyzer exhibits a cell voltage of 2.07 V to launch the current density of 1 A cm^-2 and excellent long-term stability at 500 mA cm^-2 under room temperature in alkaline solution, outperforming the commercial RuO₂ -based AEM water electrolyzer (2.19 V).

Defect-Enriched Hollow Porous Carbon Nanocages Enable Highly Efficient Chlorine Evolution Reaction

Metal-free carbon-based catalysts are crucial for the electrocatalytic chlorine evolution reaction (CER) to reduce the usage of noble metals and industrial cost. However, the corresponding catalytic activity of high overpotential and low durability hinders their wide application. Here, a hollow porous carbon (HPC) nanocage with a controlled oxygen electronic state around designed carbon defects for CER activity is reported. Alkali etching can bring defects in zeolite with a hollow structure. In a hard template strategy, the type of carbon defects is directly related to etching degree of the zeolite template. More importantly, the oxygen atoms can be "borrowed" from the zeolite framework by the defective carbon. The electron density around unsaturated O atoms can be decreased on the minor defects in carbon compared with that on large defects which is favorable for the adsorption of Cl^- . Consequently, the as-synthesized HPC nanocages with minor defects show excellent electrocatalytic performance for CER with a low overpotential of 94 mV at current density of 10 mA cm^-2 with good stability, which is superior to the commercial precious metal catalyst of dimensionally stable anode (DSA), and the best in the reported carbon materials. The designed carbon materials provide an option for metal-free industrial catalysts with significant CER activities.

Synergistic Bimetallic CoCu-Codecorated Carbon Nanosheet Arrays as Integrated Bifunctional Cathodes for High-Performance Rechargeable/Flexible Zinc-Air Batteries

The unremitting exploration of well-architectured and high-efficiency oxygen electrocatalysts is promising to speed up the surface-mediated oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) kinetics of rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, bimetallic CoCu-codecorated carbon nanosheet arrays (CoCu/N-CNS) are proposed as self-supported bifunctional oxygen catalysts. The integrated catalysts are in situ constructed via a simple sacrificial-templated strategy, imparting CoCu/N-CNS with 3D interconnected conductive pathways, abundant mesopores for electrolyte penetration and ion diffusion, as well as Cu-synergized Co-N_x /O reactive sites for improved catalytic activities. By incorporating a moderate amount of Cu into CoCu/N-CNS, the bifunctional activities can be further increased due to synergistic oxygen electrocatalysis. Consequently, the optimized CoCu/N-CNS realizes a low overall overpotential of 0.64 V for OER and ORR and leads to high-performance liquid ZABs with high gravimetric energy (879.7 Wh kg^-1 ), high peak power density (104.3 mW cm^-2 ), and remarkable cyclic stability upon 400 h/1000 cycles at 10 mA cm^-2 . More impressively, all-solid-state flexible ZABs assembled with the CoCu/N-CNS cathode exhibit superior rate performance and exceptional mechanical flexibility under arbitrary bending conditions. This CoCu/N-CNS monolith holds significant potential in advancing cation-modulated multimetallic electrocatalysts and multifunctional nanocatalysts.

Dynamic Reconstructed RuO2 /NiFeOOH with Coherent Interface for Efficient Seawater Oxidation

Developing efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts for seawater electrolysis is still a big challenge. Herein, a facile one-pot approach is reported to synthesize RuO₂ -incorporated NiFe-metal organic framework (RuO₂ /NiFe-MOF) with unique nanobrick-nanosheet heterostructure as precatalyst. Driven by electric field, the RuO₂ /NiFe-MOF dynamically reconstructs into RuO₂ nanoparticles-anchored NiFe oxy/hydroxide nanosheets (RuO₂ /NiFeOOH) with coherent interface, during which the dissolution and redeposition of RuO₂ are witnessed. Owing to the synergistic interaction between RuO₂ and NiFeOOH, the as-reconstructed RuO₂ /NiFeOOH exhibits outstanding alkaline OER activity with an ultralow overpotential of 187.6 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and a small Tafel slope of 31.9 mV dec^-1 and excellent durability at high current densities of 840 and 1040 mA cm^-2 in 1 m potassium hydroxide (KOH). When evaluated for seawater oxidation, the RuO₂ /NiFeOOH only needs a low overpotential of 326.2 mV to achieve 500 mA cm^-2 and can continuously catalyze OER at 500 mA cm^-2 for 100 h with negligible activity degradation. Density function theory calculations reveal that the presence of strong interaction and enhanced charge transfer along the coherent interface between RuO₂ and NiFeOOH ensures improved OER activity and stability.

Spinel-Derived Formation and Amorphization of Bimetallic Oxyhydroxides for Efficient Electrocatalytic Biomass Oxidation

Replacing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with water-assisted oxidation of organic molecules represents a promising approach for achieving sustainable electrochemical biomass utilization. Among numerous OER catalysts, spinels have received substantial attention due to their manifold compositions and valence states, yet their application in biomass conversions remains rare. Herein, a series of spinels were investigated for the selective electrooxidation of furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, two model substrates for versatile value-added chemical products. Spinel sulfides universally exhibit superior catalytic performance compared to that of spinel oxides, and further investigations show that the replacement of oxygen with sulfur led to the complete phase transition of spinel sulfides into amorphous bimetallic oxyhydroxides during electrochemical activation, serving as the active species. Excellent values of conversion rate (100%), selectivity (100%), faradaic efficiency (>95%), and stability were achieved via sulfide-derived amorphous CuCo-oxyhydroxide. Furthermore, a volcano-like correlation was established between their BEOR and OER activities based on an OER-assisted organic oxidation mechanism.

Electro-oxidation reconstitution of aluminium copper MOF-derived metal oxyhydroxides for a robust OER process

It is common knowledge that the O₂ evolution reaction (OER) is a crucial half-reaction in the electrolysis of water. However, it is currently difficult to create inexpensive OER electrode materials in a way that is efficient, simple, and environmentally friendly. In this research, metal oxy-hydroxides with numerous oxygen defects (M-OOHv) are created at surface of Cu foam (CF) using a unique, straightforward electro-oxidation reconstitution (ER) process. Different spectroscopic and microscopy methods are used to analyse the electrode characteristics of Al₂Cu-MOF@M-OOHv-ER/CF; electrochemical measurements display a lower overpotential (η) of 366 mV @ 10 mA cm^-2 and a Tafel slope of 95.2 mV dec^-1 in 1.0 M KOH. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman studies confirm the phase transition of the metal-organic framework (MOF) to the M-OOH, which acts as the active site to boost the OER activity. Through spectroscopic and microscopic investigations, it is determined that the efficiency of bimetallic electrode materials and oxygen vacancies in the M-OOHv have an impact on the electron power density. The manufactured electrode material additionally showed good durability for 50 hours. As a result, the newly developed Al₂Cu-MOF@M-OOHv-ER/CF nanomaterial has greater potential for both electrolysis of water and other energy storage equipment.

Metallocavitins as Advanced Enzyme Mimics and Promising Chemical Catalysts

The supramolecular approach is becoming increasingly dominant in biomimetics and chemical catalysis due to the expansion of the enzyme active center idea, which now includes binding cavities (hydrophobic pockets), channels and canals for transporting substrates and products. For a long time, the mimetic strategy was mainly focused on the first coordination sphere of the metal ion. Understanding that a highly organized cavity-like enzymatic pocket plays a key role in the sophisticated functionality of enzymes and that the activity and selectivity of natural metalloenzymes are due to the effects of the second coordination sphere, created by the protein framework, opens up new perspectives in biomimetic chemistry and catalysis. There are two main goals of mimicking enzymatic catalysis: (1) scientific curiosity to gain insight into the mysterious nature of enzymes, and (2) practical tasks of mankind: to learn from nature and adopt from its many years of evolutionary experience. Understanding the chemistry within the enzyme nanocavity (confinement effect) requires the use of relatively simple model systems. The performance of the transition metal catalyst increases due to its retention in molecular nanocontainers (cavitins). Given the greater potential of chemical synthesis, it is hoped that these promising bioinspired catalysts will achieve catalytic efficiency and selectivity comparable to and even superior to the creations of nature. Now it is obvious that the cavity structure of molecular nanocontainers and the real possibility of modifying their cavities provide unlimited possibilities for simulating the active centers of metalloenzymes. This review will focus on how chemical reactivity is controlled in a well-defined cavitin nanospace. The author also intends to discuss advanced metal–cavitin catalysts related to the study of the main stages of artificial photosynthesis, including energy transfer and storage, water oxidation and proton reduction, as well as highlight the current challenges of activating small molecules, such as H2O, CO2, N2, O2, H2, and CH4.

Direct Visualization of Atomic Structure in Multivariate Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for Guiding Electrocatalysts Design

The direct utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has attracted increasing interests. Herein, we employ the low-dose integrated differential phase contrast-scanning transmission electron microscopy (iDPC-STEM) technique to visualize the atomic structure of multivariate MOFs (MTV-MOFs) for guiding the structural design of bulk MOFs for efficient OER. The iDPC-STEM images revealed that incorporating Fe³⁺ or 2-aminoterephthalate (ATA) into Ni-BDC (BDC: benzenedicarboxylate) can introduce inhomogeneous lattice strain that weaken the coordination bonds, which can be selectively cleaved via a mild heat treatment to simultaneously generate coordinatively unsaturated metal sites, conductive Ni@C and hierarchical porous structure. Thus, excellent OER activity with current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm^-2 are achieved over the defective MOFs at small overpotentials of 286 mV and 365 mV, respectively, which is superior to the commercial RuO₂ catalyst and most of the bulk MOFs.

Skeleton-coated CoCu-Based bimetal hollow nanoprisms as High-Performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction

CoSx materials with high catalytic activity are considered as promising HER electrocatalysts, but their inherent low electrical conductivity and easy loss of active sites have greatly limited their applications in OER electrocatalysis. Herein, we present a convenient method to synthesize Co-Cu hollow nanoprisms after wrapping and calcining with trithiocyanuric acid (C3H3N3S3) (denoted N-Co-Cu-S-x HNs). The results showed that Cu doping modified the charge density of Co center, leading to the enhancement of the intrinsic activity of the Co3S4 active center, meanwhile wrapping trithiocyanuric acid on the surfaces and calcinating to form N-containing C skeleton as a flexible substrate to encapsulate the catalysts, which effectively protected the active sites inside the catalysts. Notably, the OER catalyst that was optimized by adjusting the metal ratio and controlling the trithiocyanuric acid incorporation exhibited a low overpotential of 306 mV under a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and showed a superior durability of more than 27 h. This work may provide some insights into the preparation of oxygen evolution reaction catalysts with excellent performance through doping transition metals and protecting the internal active sites strategies.

Iron-doped novel Co-based metal-organic frameworks for preparation of bifunctional catalysts with an amorphous structure for OER/HER in alkaline solution

A novel two-dimensional Co-MOF material {[Co(dptz)₂(oba)₂]·(DMF)₂}_n is prepared using mixed organic ligands, which exhibits both OER (oxygen evolution reaction) and HER (hydrogen evolution reaction) catalytic performance. The integration of an Fe dopant and amorphous interface into Co-MOF to improving the electrocatalytic performance of pristine MOFs (metal-organic frameworks) is demonstrated and the origin of the remarkable electrocatalytic performance of the catalyst is elucidated. The comprehensive characterization data of Fe@Co-MOFs illustrate that there is a crystallinity transition during the doping of Co-MOF, which increases the electron transfer rate of the material and ensures increased exposure of the ligand unsaturated active site on the surface, and modulates the electronic structure of the Co center in a synergistic manner. As a result, the optimized catalytic Fe@Co-MOF-3 with an amorphous structure exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic performance for the OER, with only 248 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm^-2 and excellent stability after 11 h of testing in alkaline solution. Not only that, the HER was achieved with a low overpotential of 150 mV at 10 mA cm^-2. The present work indicates that the as-synthesized Co-MOF and Fe@Co-MOFs offer prospects in developing electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Cobalt Molybdenum Nitride-Based Nanosheets for Seawater Splitting

The development of cost-effective bifunctional catalysts for water electrolysis is both a crucial necessity and an exciting scientific challenge. Herein, a simple approach based on a metal-organic framework sacrificial template to preparing cobalt molybdenum nitride supported on nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets is reported. The porous structure of produced composite enables fast reaction kinetics, enhanced stability, and high corrosion resistance in critical seawater conditions. The cobalt molybdenum nitride-based electrocatalyst is tested toward both oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction half-reactions using the seawater electrolyte, providing excellent performances that are rationalized using density functional theory. Subsequently, the nitride composite is tested as a bifunctional catalyst for the overall splitting of KOH-treated seawater from the Mediterranean Sea. The assembled system requires overpotentials of just 1.70 V to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm^-2 in 1 M KOH seawater and continuously works for over 62 h. This work demonstrates the potential of transition-metal nitrides for seawater splitting and represents a step forward toward the cost-effective implementation of this technology.

Brønsted Acid-Functionalized Ionic Co(II) Framework: A Tailored Vessel for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution and Size-Exclusive Optical Speciation of Biothiols

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) not only combine globally demanded renewable energy generation and environmental remediation onto a single platform but also rationalize structure-performance synergies to devise smarter materials with remarkable performance. The robust and non-interpenetrated cationic MOF exemplifies a unique bifunctional scaffold for the efficient electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and ultrasensitive monitoring of biohazards. The microporous framework containing Brønsted acid-functionalized [Co₂(μ₂-OH)(CO₂)₂] secondary building units (SBUs) exhibits remarkable OER performance in 1 M KOH, requiring 410 mV overpotential to obtain 10 mA cm^-2 anodic current density, and a low Tafel slope of 55 mV/dec with 93.1% Faradaic efficiency. Apart from the high turnover frequency and electrochemically assessable surface area, steady OER performance over 500 cycles under potentiodynamic and potentiostatic conditions result in long-term catalyst durability. The highly emissive attribute from nitrogen-rich fluorescent struts benefits the MOF in recyclable and selective fluoro-detection of three biothiols (l-cysteine, homocysteine, and glutathione) in water with a fast response time. In addition to colorimetric monitoring in the solid and solution phases, control experiments validate size-exclusive biothiol speciation through molecular-dimension-mediated pore diffusion. The role of SBUs in the OER mechanism is detailed from density functional theory-derived free energy analysis, which also validates the importance of accessible N-sites in sensing via portraying framework-analyte supramolecular interactions.

Synergetic Dual-Ion Centers Boosting Metal Organic Framework Alloy Catalysts toward Efficient Two Electron Oxygen Reduction

Herein, a strategy of synergetic dual-metal-ion centers to boost transition-metal-based metal organic framework (MOF) alloy nanomaterials as active oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts for efficient hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) generation is proposed. Through a facile one-pot wet chemical method, a series of MOF alloys with unique Ni-M (M-Co, Cu, Zn) synergetic centers are synthesized, where the strong metallic ions 3d-3d synergy can effectively inhibit O₂ cleavage on Ni sites toward a favorable two-electron ORR pathway. Impressively, the well-designed NiZn MOF alloy catalysts show an excellent H₂ O₂ selectivity up to 90% during ORR, evidently outperforming that of NiCo MOF (45%), and NiCu MOF (55%). Moreover, it sustains efficient activity and robust stability under a continuous longterm ORR operation. The correlative in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray adsorption fine structure and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses reveal at the atomic level that, the higher Ni oxidation states species, regulated via adjacent Zn²⁺ ions, are favorable for optimizing the adsorption energetics of key *OOH intermediates toward fast two electron ORR kinetics.

High-performance seawater oxidation by a homogeneous multimetallic layered double hydroxide electrocatalyst

Seawater is one of the most abundant resources on Earth. Direct electrolysis of seawater is a transformative technology for sustainable hydrogen production without causing freshwater scarcity. However, this technology is severely impeded by a lack of robust and active oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Here, we report a highly efficient OER electrocatalyst composed of multimetallic layered double hydroxides, which affords superior catalytic performance and long-term durability for high-performance seawater electrolysis. To the best of our knowledge, this catalyst is among the most active for OER and it advances the development of seawater electrolysis technology.

Seawater electrolysis is an intriguing technology for sustainable hydrogen production that will not exacerbate the global shortage of freshwater or increase carbon emissions. However, due to the undesirable anodic chlorine evolution reaction and the strong corrosiveness of seawater, this technology is significantly hindered by a lack of robust oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts that exhibit high activity, high selectivity, and good stability. Here, we demonstrate a homogeneous multimetallic catalyst consisting of Ni and Fe coincorporated into CuCo layered double hydroxide (denoted as NiFe-CuCo LDH) that serves as an active and durable OER electrode for high-performance seawater electrolysis. With abundant exposed multimetal sites and well-defined micronanostructures, the NiFe-CuCo LDH catalyst requires overpotentials of only 259, 278, and 283 mV to yield current densities of 100, 300, and 500 mA cm⁻², respectively, in 6 M KOH seawater electrolyte. Moreover, it exhibits very high OER selectivity (Faradaic efficiency of 97.4% for O₂ at 500 mA cm⁻²) and superior durability during operation, working stably under a large current density of 500 mA cm⁻² for up to 500 h in 6 M KOH seawater electrolyte. This multimetallic electrocatalyst is one of the best performing ones among all reported transition-metal-based OER electrocatalysts in alkaline seawater electrolyte, which boosts the development of seawater electrolysis technology.

Research progress in improving the oxygen evolution reaction by adjusting the 3d electronic structure of transition metal catalysts

As a clean and renewable energy carrier, hydrogen (H₂) has become an attractive alternative to dwindling fossil fuels. The key to realizing hydrogen-based energy systems is to develop efficient and economical hydrogen production methods. The water electrolysis technique has the advantages of cleanliness, sustainability, and high efficiency, which can be applied to large-scale hydrogen production. However, the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode plays a decisive role in the efficiency of hydrogen evolution during water splitting. Generally, noble metal catalysts (such as ruthenium and iridium) are considered to exhibit the best OER performance; however, they exhibit disadvantages such as high costs, limited reserves, and poor stability. Therefore, the research on highly efficient non-noble metal catalysts that can replace their noble metal counterparts has always been important. This review presents the recent advances in the preparation of high-performance OER electrocatalysts by regulating the electronic structure of 3d transition metals. First, we introduce the reaction mechanism of water splitting and the OER, which reveals the high requirement of the complex four-electron process of the OER. Second, the electron transfer mode and development progress of highly active transition metal electrocatalysts are used to summarize the research situation of transition metal OER catalysts in water splitting. Finally, the future development direction and challenges of transition metal catalysts are prospected based on the current research progress.
