Sulfone-Decorated Conjugated Organic Polymers Activate Oxygen for Photocatalytic Methane Conversion

Steering Photooxidation of Methane to Formic Acid over A Priori Screened Supported Catalysts

Efficient methane photooxidation to formic acid (HCOOH) has emerged as a sustainable approach to simultaneously generate value-added chemicals and harness renewable energy. However, the persistent challenge lies in achieving a high yield and selectivity for HCOOH formation, primarily due to the complexities associated with modulating intermediate conversion and desorption after methane activation. In this study, we employ first-principles calculations as a comprehensive guiding tool and discover that by precisely controlling the O2 activation process on noble metal cocatalysts and the adsorption strength of carbon-containing intermediates on metal oxide supports, one can finely tune the selectivity of methane photooxidation products. Specifically, a bifunctional catalyst comprising Pd nanoparticles and monoclinic WO3 (Pd/WO3) would possess optimal O2 activation kinetics and an intermediate oxidation/desorption barrier, thereby promoting HCOOH formation. As evidenced by experiments, the Pd/WO3 catalyst achieves an exceptional HCOOH yield of 4.67 mmol gcat-1 h-1 with a high selectivity of 62% under full-spectrum light irradiation at room temperature using molecular O2. Notably, these results significantly outperform the state-of-the-art photocatalytic systems operated under identical condition.

Molten Guest-Mediated Metal-Organic Frameworks Featuring Multi-Modal Supramolecular Interaction Sites for Flame-Retardant Superionic Conductor in All-Solid-State Batteries

The development of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) with outstanding comprehensive performance is currently a critical challenge for achieving high energy density and safer solid-state batteries (SSBs). In this study, a strategy of nano-confined in situ solidification is proposed to create a novel category of molten guest-mediated metal-organic frameworks, named MGM-MOFs. By embedding the newly developed molten crystalline organic electrolyte (ML20) into the nanocages of anionic MOF-OH, MGM-MOF-OH, characterized by multi-modal supramolecular interaction sites and continuous negative electrostatic environments within nano-channels, is achieved. These nanochannels promote ion transport through the successive hopping of Li+ between neighbored negative electrostatic environments and suppress anion movement through the chemical constraint of the hydroxyl-functionalized pore wall. This results in remarkable Li+ conductivity of 7.1 × 10-4 S cm-1 and high Li+ transference number of 0.81. Leveraging these advantages, the SSBs assembled with MGM-MOF-OH exhibit impressive cycle stability and a high specific energy density of 410.5 Wh kganode + cathode + electrolyte -1 under constrained conditions and various working temperatures. Unlike flammable traditional MOFs, MGM-MOF-OH demonstrates high robustness under various harsh conditions, including ignition, high voltage, and extended to humidity.

Porphyrin-Based Conjugated Microporous Polymer Loaded with Nanoscale Zerovalent Iron for the Degradation of Organic Pollutants under Visible Light

The degradation of organic dye from waterbodies is of great significance for clean production and environmental remediation. Herein, two porphyrin-based conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) loaded with nanoscale zerovalent iron (named as Por-CMPs-1-2@nZVI) were successfully fabricated by Sonogashira-Hagihara coupling reactions and the liquid-phase method. The as-synthesized Por-CMPs-1-2@nZVI composites were characterized by various means of analysis, and it was confirmed that Por-CMPs-1-2 loaded with nZVI had good photocatalytic performance. Calculated by ultraviolet-visible spectrum, the band-gap energies of Por-CMPs-1@nZVI and Por-CMPs-2@nZVI were 1.45 and 1.32 eV, respectively, indicating that both can be activated by visible light. The photodegradation of organic dye experiments demonstrated that Por-CMPs-2@nZVI degraded 98.0% of 10 ppm Methylene Blue (MB) within 150 min, which is higher than that of Por-CMPs-1-2 and Por-CMPs-1@nZVI. The experiment of active substance capture and mechanism of ESR confirmed that superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical were the primary valid substances in the photodegradation process of MB. In addition, the preparation of membrane materials was shown to be a successful strategy to realize engineered scale-up production.

Photodriven Methane Conversion on Transition Metal Oxide Catalyst: Recent Progress and Prospects

Methane as the main component in natural gas is a promising chemical raw material for synthesizing value-added chemicals, but its harsh chemical conversion process often causes severe energy and environment concerns. Photocatalysis provides an attractive path to active and convert methane into various products under mild conditions with clean and sustainable solar energy, although many challenges remain at present. In this review, recent advances in photocatalytic methane conversion are systematically summarized. As the basis of methane conversion, the activation of methane is first elucidated from the structural basis and activation path of methane molecules. The study is committed to categorizing and elucidating the research progress and the laws of the intricate methane conversion reactions according to the target products, including photocatalytic methane partial oxidation, reforming, coupling, combustion, and functionalization. Advanced photocatalytic reactor designs are also designed to enrich the options and reliability of photocatalytic methane conversion performance evaluation. The challenges and prospects of photocatalytic methane conversion are also discussed, which in turn offers guidelines for methane-conversion-related photocatalyst exploration, reaction mechanism investigation, and advanced photoreactor design.

A High Crystalline Perylene-Based Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework for Enhanced Photocatalytic H2O2 Evolution

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a kind of crystalline porous material that have shown great potential for photocatalysis on account of their mild synthesis conditions and high crystallinity. Perylene-based photocatalysts have great potential for photocatalytic H2O2 production due to their excellent photochemical stability and broad spectral absorption. In this work, we designed and synthesized a high crystalline perylene-based HOF (PTBA) and an amorphous analog sample PTPA for photocatalytic H2O2 evolution. Under visible light irradiation, PTBA shows a higher photocatalytic H2O2 production rate of 2699 μmol g-1 h-1 than PTPA (2176 μmol g-1 h-1) and an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 2.96% at 500 nm. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of PTBA is attributed to the promotion of the separation and transfer of photocarriers due to its high crystallinity. This work provides a precedent for the application of HOFs in the field of photocatalytic H2O2 generation.

Solar-Driven Reforming of Methane and Nitrogen to Methanol and Ammonium on Iron-Modified Zeolite under Ambient Conditions in Water

Artificial photosynthesis from selective methane oxidation or nitrogen reduction to value-added chemicals provides a promising pathway for the sustainable chemical industry, while still remaining a great challenge due to the extreme difficulty in C-H and N≡N bond cleavage under ambient conditions. Catalysts that can cocatalyze these two reactions simultaneously are rarely reported. Here, Fe-ZSM-5 with highly dispersed extra-framework Fe-oxo species enables efficient and selective photocatalytic conversion of methane and nitrogen to coproduce methanol and ammonia using H2O as the redox reagent under ambient conditions. The optimized Fe-ZSM-5 photocatalyst achieves up to 0.88 mol/molFe·h of methanol products with 97% selectivity. Meanwhile, the productivity of ammonia is 0.61 mol/molFe·h. In situ EPR and DRIFT studies disclose that water serves as a redox reagent to provide hydroxyl radicals for methane oxidation and protons for nitrogen hydrogenation. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that Fe-oxo species play a significant role in the coactivation of methane and nitrogen molecules, which lowers the energy barriers of rate-determining steps for methanol and ammonia generation.

Cl2 ⋅- Mediates Direct and Selective Conversion of Inert C(sp3 )-H Bonds into Aldehydes/Ketones

Developing new reactive pathway to activate inert C(sp3 )-H bonds for valuable oxygenated products remains a challenge. We prepared a series of triazine conjugated organic polymers to photoactivate C-H into aldehyde/ketone via O2 →H2 O2 →⋅OH→Cl⋅→Cl2 ⋅- . Experiment results showed Cl2 ⋅- could successively activate C(sp3 )-H more effectively than Cl⋅ to generate unstable dichlorinated intermediates, increasing the kinetic rate ratio of dichlorination to monochlorination by a factor of 2,000 and thus breaking traditional dichlorination kinetic constraints. These active intermediates were hydrolyzed into aldehydes or ketones easily, when compared with typical stable dichlorinated complexes, avoiding chlorinated by-product generation. Moreover, an integrated two-phase system in an acid solution strengthened the Cl2 ⋅- mediated process and inhibited product overoxidation, where the conversion rate of toluene reached 16.94 mmol/g/h and the selectivity of benzaldehyde was 99.5 %. This work presents a facile and efficient approach for selective conversion of inert C(sp3 )-H bonds using Cl2 ⋅- .

Periodate activation by pyrite for the disinfection of antibiotic-resistant bacteria: Performance and mechanisms

The propagation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) greatly endangers the ecological safety and human health. This study employed pyrite (FeS₂, naturally abundant mineral) for periodate (PI) activation to disinfect ARB. FeS₂/PI system could disinfect 1 × 10⁷ CFU mL^-1 of kanamycin-resistant E.coli below the limit of detection in 20 min. Efficient ARB inactivation performance was achieved in pH from 3 to 9, ionic strength from 0 to 300 mM, with HA (0.1-10 mg L^-1) in suspension, and in real water samples including tap water, river water and sewage. FeS₂/PI system could also efficiently disinfect gentamycin-resistant E.coli and Gram-positive B. subtilis. The generated reactive species including Fe(IV), ·O₂^- and ·OH would attack cell membrane and overwhelmed intracellular defense system. The intracellular kanamycin resistance genes in cells would be released and then degraded in FeS₂/PI system. PI preferred to be adsorbed on Fe site of FeS₂ (with lower adsorption energy, more occupancy of bonding state and stronger bonding strength). The subsequent transfer of electron cloud from Fe site to PI would cleave IO bond to generate reactive species. Moreover, FeS₂/PI system could also combine with sand filtration system to efficiently capture and disinfect ARB. Therefore, FeS₂/PI system is a promising approach to inactivate ARB in different scenarios.
