Gauging Radical Stabilization with Carbenes

Mixed Valence {Ni2+Ni1+} Clusters as Models of Acetyl Coenzyme A Synthase Intermediates

Acetyl coenzyme A synthase (ACS) catalyzes the formation and deconstruction of the key biological metabolite, acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA). The active site of ACS features a {NiNi} cluster bridged to a [Fe4S4]n+ cubane known as the A-cluster. The mechanism by which the A-cluster functions is debated, with few model complexes able to replicate the oxidation states, coordination features, or reactivity proposed in the catalytic cycle. In this work, we isolate the first bimetallic models of two hypothesized intermediates on the paramagnetic pathway of the ACS function. The heteroligated {Ni2+Ni1+} cluster, [K(12-crown-4)2][1], effectively replicates the coordination number and oxidation state of the proposed "Ared" state of the A-cluster. Addition of carbon monoxide to [1]- allows for isolation of a dinuclear {Ni2+Ni1+(CO)} complex, [K(12-crown-2)n][2] (n = 1-2), which bears similarity to the "ANiFeC" enzyme intermediate. Structural and electronic properties of each cluster are elucidated by X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, cyclic voltammetry, and UV/vis and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies, which are supplemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Calculations indicate that the pseudo-T-shaped geometry of the three-coordinate nickel in [1]- is more stable than the Y-conformation by 22 kcal mol-1, and that binding of CO to Ni1+ is barrierless and exergonic by 6 kcal mol-1. UV/vis absorption spectroscopy on [2]- in conjunction with time-dependent DFT calculations indicates that the square-planar nickel site is involved in electron transfer to the CO π*-orbital. Further, we demonstrate that [2]- promotes thioester synthesis in a reaction analogous to the production of acetyl coenzyme A by ACS.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Derived 1,3,5-Trimethylenebenzene: On-Surface Synthesis and Electronic Structure

1,3,5-Trimethylenebenzene (1,3,5-TMB), a 3-fold-symmetric triradical with a high-spin ground state, is an attractive platform for investigating the unique spin properties of π-conjugated triangular triradicals. Here, we report the on-surface synthesis of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-derived 1,3,5-TMB (N-TMB) via surface-assisted C-C and C-N coupling reactions on Au(111). The chemical and electronic structures of N-TMB on the Au(111) surface are revealed with atomic precision using scanning tunneling microscopy and noncontact atomic force microscopy, combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is demonstrated that there is substantial charge transfer between N-TMB and the substrate, resulting in a positively charged N-TMB on Au(111). DFT calculations at the UB3LYP/def2-TZVP level of theory and multireference method, e.g., CASSCF/NEVPT2, indicate that N-TMB possesses a doublet ground state with reduced Cs symmetry in the gas phase, contrasting the quartet ground state of 1,3,5-TMB with D3h symmetry, and exhibits a doublet-quartet energy gap of -0.80 eV. The incorporation of NHC structures and the extended π-conjugation promote the spin-orbital overlaps in N-TMB, leading to Jahn-Teller distortion and the formation of a robust doublet state. Our results not only demonstrate the fabrication of polyradicals based on NHC but also shed light on the effect of NHC and π-conjugation on the electronic structure and spin coupling, which opens up new possibilities for precisely regulating the spin-spin exchange coupling of organic polyradicals.

Highly Stable Self-Regenerating Organic Multi-Redox Systems derived from Bicyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbenes (BICAACs)

An extended class of organic multi-redox systems was derived from bicyclic(alkyl)amino carbenes (BICAACs). The highly-conjugated system undergoes a total of 4 redox events spanning a 1.8 V redox range. These organic compounds exhibited four different stable redox states (dication, radical cation, neutral and radical anion), and all of them were characterized either by single crystal X-ray study and/or various spectroscopic studies. Three of the four redox states are stable to air and moisture. The availability of stable multiple redox states demonstrated promise towards their efficacy in the symmetric H-cell charge/discharge cycling. Among various redox states, the dication/neutral state works efficiently and continuously for 1500 cycles in 2e- charge/discharge process outside glovebox in commercially available DMF with minimum capacity loss (retaining nearly 90 % Coulombic efficiency). Surprisingly, the efficiency of the redox cycle was retained even if the system was exposed to air for 30 days when it slowly regenerated to the initial deep blue radical cation, and it exhibited another 100 charge/discharge cycles with a minimal capacity loss. Such a stable H-cell cycling ability is not well known among organic molecule-based systems.

Boosting the π-Acceptor Property of Mesoionic Carbenes by Carbonylation with Carbon Monoxide

We report the room temperature dimerization of carbon monoxide mediated by C4/C5-vicinal anionic dicarbenes Li(ADC) (ADC = ArC{(Dipp)NC}2 ; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ; Ar = Ph, DMP (4-Me2 NC6 H4 ), Bp (4-PhC6 H4 )) to yield (E)-ethene-1,2-bis(olate) (i.e. - O-C=C-O- = COen ) bridged mesoionic carbene (iMIC) lithium compounds COen -[(iMIC)Li]2 (COen -[iMIC]2 = [ArC{(Dipp)NC}2 (CO)]2 ) in quantitative yields. COen -[(iMIC)Li]2 are highly colored stable solids, exhibit a strikingly small HOMO-LUMO energy gap, and readily undergo 2e-oxidations with selenium, CuCl (or CuCl2 ), and AgCl to afford the dinuclear compounds COon -[(iMIC)E]2 (E = Se, CuCl, AgCl) featuring a 1,2-dione bridged neutral bis-iMIC (i.e. COon -[iMIC]2 = [ArC{(Dipp)NC}2 (C=O)]2 ). COen -[(iMIC)Li]2 undergo redox-neutral salt metathesis reactions with LiAlH4 and (Et2 O)2 BeBr2 and afford COen -[(iMIC)AlH2 ]2 and COen -[(iMIC)BeBr]2 , in which the dianionic COen -moiety remains intact. All compounds have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction. Stereoelectronic properties of COon -[iMIC]2 are quantified by experimental and theoretical methods.

A Blueprint for the Stabilization of Sub-Valent Alkaline Earth Complexes

The study of sub-valent Group 2 chemistry is a relatively new research field, being established in 2007 with the report of the first Mg(I) dimers. These species are stabilized by the formation of a Mg-Mg covalent bond; however, the extension of this chemistry to heavier alkaline earth (AE) metals has been frustrated by significant synthetic challenges, primarily associated with the instability of heavy AE-AE interactions. Here we present a new blueprint for the stabilization of heavy AE(I) complexes, based upon the reduction of AE(II) precursors with planar coordination geometries. We report the synthesis and structural characterisation of homoleptic trigonal planar AE(II) complexes of the monodentate amides {N(SiMe3 )2 }- and {N(Mes)(SiMe3 )}- . DFT calculations showed that the LUMOs of these complexes all show some d-character for AE = Ca-Ba. DFT analysis of the square planar Sr(II) complex [Sr{N(SiMe3 )2 }(dioxane)2 ]∞ revealed analogous frontier orbital d-character. AE(I) complexes that could be accessed by reduction of these AE(II) precursors were modelled computationally, revealing exergonic formation in all cases. Crucially, NBO calculations show that some d-character is preserved in the SOMO of theoretical AE(I) products upon reduction, showing that d-orbitals could play a crucial role in achieving stable heavy AE(I) complexes.

1,3-Imidazole-Based Mesoionic Carbenes and Anionic Dicarbenes: Pushing the Limit of Classical N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

Classical N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) featuring the carbene center at the C2-position of 1,3-imidazole framework (i.e. C2-carbenes) are well acknowledged as very versatile neutral ligands in molecular as well as in materials sciences. The efficiency and success of NHCs in diverse areas is essentially attributed to their persuasive stereoelectronics, in particular the potent σ-donor property. The NHCs with the carbene center at the unusual C4 (or C5) position, the so-called abnormal NHCs (aNHCs) or mesoionic carbenes (iMICs), are however superior σ-donors than C2-carbenes. Hence, iMICs have substantial potential in sustainable synthesis and catalysis. The main obstacle in this direction is rather demanding synthetic accessibility of iMICs. The aim of this review article is to highlight recent advances, particularly by the author's research group, in accessing stable iMICs, quantifying their properties, and exploring their applications in synthesis and catalysis. In addition, the synthetic viability and use of vicinal C4,C5-anionic dicarbenes (ADCs), also based on an 1,3-imidazole framework, are presented. As will be apparent on following pages, iMICs and ADCs hold potentials in pushing the limit of classical NHCs by enabling access to conceptually new main-group heterocycles, radicals, molecular catalysts, ligands sets, and more.

Evidence for Carbene Intermediates in Isocyanide Homologation by Aluminium(I)

The C-C bond formation between C1 molecules plays an important role in chemistry as manifested by the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process. Serving as models for the FT process, we report here the reactions between a neutral AlI complex (Me NacNac)Al (1, Me NacNac=HC[(CMe)(NDipp)]2 , Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl) and various isocyanides. The step-by-step coupling mechanism was studied in detail by low-temperature NMR monitoring, isotopic labeling, as well as quantum chemical calculations. Three different products were isolated in reaction of 1 with the sterically encumbered 2,6-bis(benzhydryl)-4-Me-phenyl isocyanide (BhpNC). These products substantiate carbene intermediates. The reaction between 1 and adamantyl isocyanide (AdNC) generated a trimerization product, and a corresponding carbene intermediate could be trapped in the form of a molybdenum(0) complex. Tri-, tetra-, and even pentamerization products were isolated with the sterically less congested phenyl and p-methoxyphenyl isocyanides (PhNC and PMPNC) with concurrent construction of quinoline or indole heterocycles. Overall, this study provides evidence for carbene intermediates in FT-type chemistry of aluminium(I) and isocyanides.

(CAAC)Pd(py) Catalysts Disproportionate to Pd(CAAC)2

Palladium complexes with one N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and a pyridine ancillary ligand are powerful cross-coupling precatalysts. Herein, we report such complexes with a cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) ligand replacing the NHC. We find that the alleged reduced form, (CAAC)Pd(py), disproportionates to the (CAAC)₂Pd⁰ complex and palladium nanoparticles. This notwithstanding, they are potent catalysts in the Buchwald-Hartwig amination with aryl chlorides under mild conditions (60 °C). In the presence of dioxygen, these complexes catalyze the formation of diazenes from anilines. The catalytic activities of the NHC- and CAAC-supported palladium(0) and palladium(II) complexes are similar in the cross-coupling reaction, yet the CAAC complexes are superior for diazene formation.

Carbene Radicals in Transition-Metal-Catalyzed Reactions

Discovered as organometallic curiosities in the 1970s, carbene radicals have become a staple in modern-day homogeneous catalysis. Carbene radicals exhibit nucleophilic radical-type reactivity orthogonal to classical electrophilic diamagnetic Fischer carbenes. Their successful catalytic application has led to the synthesis of a myriad of carbo- and heterocycles, ranging from simple cyclopropanes to more challenging eight-membered rings. The field has matured to employ densely functionalized chiral porphyrin-based platforms that exhibit high enantio-, regio-, and stereoselectivity. Thus far the focus has largely been on cobalt-based systems, but interest has been growing for the past few years to expand the application of carbene radicals to other transition metals. This Perspective covers the advances made since 2011 and gives an overview on the coordination chemistry, reactivity, and catalytic application of carbene radical species using transition metal complexes and catalysts.

Crystalline Anions Based on Classical N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

Herein, the first stable anions K[SIPr^Bp ] (4 a-K) and K[IPr^Bp ] (4 b-K) (SIPr^Bp =BpC{N(Dipp)CH₂ }₂ , IPr^Bp =BpC{N(Dipp)CH}₂ ; Bp=4-PhC₆ H₄ ; Dipp=2,6-iPr₂ C₆ H₃ ) derived from classical N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) (i.e. SIPr and IPr) have been isolated as violet crystalline solids. 4 a-K and 4 b-K are prepared by KC₈ reduction of the neutral radicals [SIPr^Bp ] (3 a) and [IPr^Bp ] (3 b), respectively. The radicals 3 a and 3 b as well as [Me-IPr^Bp ] 3 c (Me-IPr^Bp =BpC{N(Dipp)CMe}₂ ) are accessible as crystalline solids on treatment of the respective 1,3-imidazoli(ni)um bromides (SIPr^Bp )Br (2 a), (IPr^Bp )Br (2 b), and (Me-IPr^Bp )Br (2 c) with KC₈ . The cyclic voltammograms of 2 a-2 c exhibit two one-electron reversible redox processes in -0.5 to -2.5 V region that correspond to the radicals 3 a-3 c and the anions (4 a-4 c)^- . Computational calculations suggest a closed-shell singlet ground state for (4 a-4 c)^- with the singlet-triplet energy gap of 17-24 kcal mol^-1 .

Reply to the 'Comment on "The oxidation state in low-valent beryllium and magnesium compounds"' by S. Pan and G. Frenking, Chem. Sci., 2022, , DOI: 10.1039/D2SC04231B

A recent article by Pan and Frenking challenges our assignment of the oxidation state of low valent group 2 compounds. With this reply, we show that our assignment of Be(+2) and Mg(+2) oxidation states in Be(cAACDip)2 and Mg(cAACDip)2 is fully consistent with our data. Some of the arguments exposed by Pan and Frenking were based on visual inspection of our figures, rather than a thorough numerical analysis. We discuss with numerical proof that some of the statements made by the authors concerning our reported data are erroneous. In addition, we provide further evidence that the criterion of the lowest orbital interaction energy in the energy decomposition analysis (EDA) method is unsuitable as a general tool to assess the valence state of the fragments. Other indicators based on natural orbitals for chemical valence (NOCV) deliver a more reliable bonding picture. We also emphasize the importance of using stable wavefunctions for any kind of analysis, including EDA.
