Achieving Near-unity Photoluminescence Quantum Yields in Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Antimony (III) Chlorides with the [SbCl5 ] Geometry

Blue-Light-Excitable Red-Emitting Organic Antimony Halides as a Reversible Humidity Sensor

Zero-dimensional organic antimony halides have attracted significant attention recently due to their structural variety, tunable optical properties, and high luminescence efficiency. Here, a new series of antimony bromide hybrid structures with seesaw [SbBr4] and pyramidal [SbBr5] geometries are reported with low band gaps and blue-light excited red emissions. Their luminescence is attributed to self-trapped excitons with a broadband emission of a large Stokes shift. Their photoluminescence signal is sensitive to water molecules, with a reversible positive correlation in a relative humidity range of 30-90%, enabling them as potential materials for real-time, self-consistent humidity sensors.

Discerning the Structure-Photophysical Property Correlation in Zero-Dimensional Antimony(III)-Doped Indium(III) Halide Hybrids

Zero-dimensional (0D) metal halide hybrids incorporating optically emissive Sb3+ dopants have received huge research attention as a result of dopant-based visible emission for lighting and scintillation applications. Indeed, there have been a plethora of reports on Sb3+ doping of indium halide (In-X)-based 0D hybrids that show strong dopant emission with varied emission wavelengths (λem) and photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). However, discerning the structure-luminescence relation in these 0D-doped hybrids remains challenging because it necessitates exquisite synthetic control on the local metal (dopant) halide geometry/site asymmetry. Demonstrated here is synthetic control that allows tuning of the local metal halide geometry of the Sb3+ dopants in 0D In-X hybrids utilizing five different organic cations. Experimental analysis of the series of Sb3+-doped In-X hybrids reveals a strong correlation between the extent of local metal halide geometry distortion and their photophysical properties (λem and PLQY). Density functional theory calculations of the doped compounds, characterizing ground- and excited-state structural distortions and energetics, reveal the origin of the extent of luminescence behavior. The experimental-computational results reported herein unravel the operative structure-luminescence relation in 0D Sb3+-doped In-X hybrids, provide insight into the emission mechanism, and open up avenues toward rational synthesis of strongly emissive materials with desired emission color for targeted applications.

Unlocking the Potential of Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Manganese Halides for Advanced Optoelectronic Applications

Organic-inorganic hybrid manganese(II) halides (OIMnHs) have garnered tremendous interest across a wide array of research fields owing to their outstanding optical properties, abundant structural diversity, low-cost solution processibility, and low toxicity, which make them extremely suitable for use as a new class of luminescent materials for various optoelectronic applications. Over the past years, a plethora of OIMnHs with different structural dimensionalities and multifunctionalities such as efficient photoluminescence (PL), radioluminescence, circularly polarized luminescence, and mechanoluminescence have been newly created by judicious screening of the organic cations and inorganic Mn(II) polyhedra. Specifically, through precise molecular and structural engineering, a series of OIMnHs with near-unity PL quantum yields, high anti-thermal quenching properties, and excellent stability in harsh conditions have been devised and explored for applications in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), X-ray scintillators, multimodal anti-counterfeiting, and fluorescent sensing. In this review, the latest advancements in the development of OIMnHs as efficient light-emitting materials are summarized, which covers from their fundamental physicochemical properties to advanced optoelectronic applications, with an emphasis on the structural and functionality design especially for LEDs and X-ray detection and imaging. Current challenges and future efforts to unlock the potentials of these promising materials are also envisioned.

A Luminescent Hybrid Bimetallic Halide Family with Solvent-Coordinated Rare Earth and Alkaline Earth Metals

Hybrid metal halides are an extraordinary class of optoelectronic materials with extensive applications. To further diversify and study the in-depth structure-property relations, we report here a new family of 21 zero-dimensional hybrid bimetallic chlorides with the general formula A(L)n[BClm] (A=rare earth (RE), alkaline earth metals and Mn; L=solvent ligand; and B=Sb, Bi and Te). The RE(DMSO)8[BCl6] (RE=La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb, and Dy; DMSO=dimethyl sulfoxide) series shows broadband emission attributed to triplet radiative recombination from Sb and Bi, incorporating the characteristic emission of RE metals, where Eu(DMSO)8[BiCl6] shows a staggering PL quantum yield of 94 %. The pseudo-octahedral [SbCl5] with Cl vacancy in AII(DMSO)6[SbCl5] (AII=Mg, Ca and Mn) and the square pyramidal [SbCl5] in AII(TMSO)6[SbCl5] (TMSO=tetramethylene sulfoxide) enhance the stereoactive expression of the 5 s2 lone pairs of Sb3+, giving rise to the observation of dual-band emission of singlet and triplet emission, respectively. A series of Te(IV) analogues have been characterized, showing blue-light-excitable single-band emission. This work expands the materials space for hybrid bimetallic halides with an emphasis on harnessing the RE elements, and provides important insights into designing new emitters and regulating their properties.

Photoluminescence Enhancement of 0D Organic-Inorganic Metal Halides via Aggregation-Induced Emission and Halide Substitution

0D organic-inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) provide unprecedented versatility in structures and photoluminescence properties. Here, a series of bluish-white emissive 0D OIMHs, (TPE-TPP)2Sb2BrxCl8-x (x = 1.16 to 8), are prepared by assembling the 1-triphenylphosphonium-4-(1,2,2-triphenylethenyl)benzene cation (TPE-TPP)+ with antimony halides anions. Based on experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations, the emission of the 0D OIMHs are attributed to the fluorescence of the organic cations with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. The 0D structure minimized the molecular motion and intermolecular interactions between (TPE-TPP)+ cations, effectively suppressing the non-radiative recombination processes. Consequently, the photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) of (TPE-TPP)2Sb2Br1.16Cl6.84 is significantly enhanced to 55.4% as compared to the organic salt (TPE-TPP)Br (20.5%). The PLQE of (TPE-TPP)2Sb2BrxCl8-x can also be readily manipulated by halide substitution, due to the competitive processes between non-radiative recombination on the inorganic moiety and the energy transfer from inorganic to organic. In addition, electrically driven light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are fabricated based on (TPE-TPP)2Sb2Br1.16Cl6.84 emitter, which exhibited bluish-white emission with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 1.1% and luminance of 335 cd m-2. This is the first report of electrically driven LED based on 0D OIMH with bluish-white emission.

Highly Selective Protic-Solvent-Mediated Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Cuprous Bromides Achieving Structural Transformation

The potential application of stimuli-responsive hybrid copper halides in information storage and switch devices has generated significant interest. However, their transformation mechanism needs to be further studied deeply. Herein, two zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic hybrids, namely, (TBA)CuBr2 (1) with linear [CuBr2]- units and (TBA)2Cu4Br6 (2) with [Cu4Br6]2- clusters (TBA+ = (C4H9)4N+), are synthesized using simple solvent evaporation approaches. Interestingly, upon exposure to distinct protic solvents, such as methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, or hot water, 1 undergoes a transformation into 2 with varying degrees of transition, accompanied by a change in luminescence color from cyan to orange (or mixed color) under high-energy emission (e.g., 254 nm) excitation. Hot water can trigger 1 to completely transform into 2 because of its large contact angle difference in the solvents. Furthermore, 2 can be converted back to 1 through a simple solid-state mechanochemical reaction. Additionally, the structure of 2 remains unchanged even after immersion in 80 °C H2O for 168 h due to the dense organic framework. This study provides valuable insights for exploring reversible structural transformation materials in the 0D metal halide system.

High External Quantum Efficiency and Dual-Band Emission of (C7H18N)3Sb2Cl9 for Sensitivity Temperature Sensing

Organic-inorganic hybrid halides have gained attention for their ease of processing and remarkable optoelectronic properties. However, the relationship between the structure and optical properties requires further exploration. In this study, the butyltrimethylammonium cation (C7H18N+) was chosen, and seven compounds were synthesized: (C7H18N)3Sb2X9 (X = Cl, Br), (C7H18N)3Bi2X9 (X = Cl, Br, I), and (C7H18N)(C2H8N)MBr5 (M = Sb, Bi). Crystals with a single organic cation exhibit a zero-dimensional structure, while the introduction of dimethylamine ions increases the crystal dimensionality from zero-dimensional (C7H18N)3Sb2Br9 to one-dimensional (C7H18N)(C2H8N)SbBr5. Under 372 nm excitation, (C7H18N)3Sb2Cl9 showed broad orange-red single-band emission with a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 88.4% and an external quantum efficiency of up to 56.9%. A white light-emitting diode based on (C7H18N)3Sb2Cl9 achieved a high color rendering index of 96.3. Moreover, dual-band emission was observed in (C7H18N)3Sb2Cl9 under 308 nm excitation, which exhibits an absolute temperature sensitivity of 1.96 × 10-3 K-1 (320 K), and a flexible film was prepared by incorporating polydimethylsiloxane. This shows the promise of hybrid metal halides as photoluminescent materials and their possibilities for temperature sensing.

Achieving Near-Unity Red Light Photoluminescence in Antimony Halide Crystals via Polyhedron Regulation

Exploration of efficient red emitting antimony hybrid halide with large Stokes shift and zero self-absorption is highly desirable due to its enormous potential for applications in solid light emitting, and active optical waveguides. However, it is still challenging and rarely reported. Herein, a series of (TMS)2SbCl5 (TMS=triphenylsulfonium cation) crystals have been prepared with diverse [SbCl5]2- configurations and distinctive emission color. Among them, cubic-phase (TMS)2SbCl5 shows bright red emission with a large Stokes shift of 312 nm. In contrast, monoclinic and orthorhombic (TMS)2SbCl5 crystals deliver efficient yellow and orange emission, respectively. Comprehensive structural investigations reveal that larger Stokes shift and longer-wavelength emission of cubic (TMS)2SbCl5 can be attributed to the larger lattice volume and longer Sb⋅⋅⋅Sb distance, which favor sufficient structural aberration freedom at excited states. Together with robust stability, (TMS)2SbCl5 crystal family has been applied as optical waveguide with ultralow loss coefficient of 3.67 ⋅ 10-4 dB μm-1, and shows superior performance in white-light emission and anti-counterfeiting. In short, our study provides a novel and fundamental perspective to structure-property-application relationship of antimony hybrid halides, which will contribute to future rational design of high-performance emissive metal halides.

Realizing efficient broadband near-infrared emission and multimode photoluminescence switching via coordination structure modulation in Sb3+-doped 0D organic metal chlorides

Recently, organic Sb(III)-based metal halides have achieved significant results in the visible light region due to their efficient emission. However, realizing efficient broadband near-infrared (NIR) emission in such materials is a great challenge. Herein, we developed three different NIR emitters via a coordination structure modulation strategy in Sb3+-doped zero-dimensional organic metal chlorides of (C20H20P)2MnCl4, (C20H20P)2ZnCl4, and (C20H20P)2CdCl4 with tetrahedral structure. More specifically, after the dopant Sb3+ is inserted into the host lattice, the coordination structures of Sb3+ ions can change from [SbCl5]2- square-pyramidal configuration to [SbCl4]- clusters, which will bring a larger lattice distortion degree to the excited state compared to the ground state, resulting in a larger Stokes shift. Thus, efficient NIR emission with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) can be obtained in Sb3+-doped compounds under 365 nm excitation. Moreover, Sb3+-doped NIR emitters also show remarkable stabilities, which prompts us to fabricate NIR phosphor conversion light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) and demonstrate their application in night vision. More interestingly, the Sb3+-doped (C20H20P)2MnCl4 shows tunable emission characteristics, which can be tuned from green to greenish-yellow, orange, red, and NIR emission under different external stimuli, and thus we can demonstrate the applications of this compound in quintuple-mode fluorescence anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Multisite Fine-Tuning in Hybrid Cadmium Halides Enables Wide Range Emissions for Anti-Counterfeiting

Achieving tunable emissions spanning the spectrum, from blue to near-infrared (NIR) light, within a single component is a formidable challenge with significant implication, particularly in tailoring multicolor luminescence for anti-counterfeiting purposes. In this study, we demonstrate a broad spectrum of emissions, covering blue to red and extending into NIR light in [BPy]2CdX4 : xSb3+ (BPy=Butylpyridinium; X=Cl, Br; x=0 to 0.08) through precise multisite structural fine-tuning. Notably, the multicolor emissions from [BPy]2CdBr4 : Sb3+ manifest a distinctive pattern, transitioning from blue to yellow in tandem with the host [BPy]2CdBr4 and further extending from yellow to NIR with its homologous [BPy]2CdCl4 : Sb3+, resulting in the simultaneous presence of intersecting and independent emission colors. Detailed modulation of chemical composition enables partial luminescence switching, facilitating the creation of diverse patterns with multicolor luminescence by employing [BPy]2CdX4 : xSb3+ as phosphors. This study for the first time successfully implements several groups of tunable emission colors in a single matrix via multisite fine-tuning. Such an effective strategy not only develops the specific relationships between tunable emissions and adjustable compositions, but also introduces a cost-effective and straightforward approach to achieving unique, high-level, plentiful-color and multiple-information-storage labels for advanced anti-counterfeiting applications.

Revealing the Structure-Luminescence Relationship in Robust Sn(IV)-Based Metal Halides by Sb3+ Doping

Low-dimensional hybrid metal halides are an emerging class of materials with highly efficient photoluminescence (PL), but the problems of poor stability remain challenging. Sn(IV)-based metal halides show robust structure but exhibit poor PL properties, and the structure-luminescence relationship is elusive. Herein, two Sn(IV)-based metal halides (compounds 1 and 2) with the same constituent ((C6H16N2)SnCl6) but different crystal structures have been prepared, which however show poor PL properties at room temperature due to the absence of active ns2 electrons. To improve materials' PL properties, Sb3+ with active 5s2 electrons was embedded into the lattice of Sn4+-based hosts. As a result, efficient emissions were achieved for Sb3+-doped compounds 1 and 2 with a maximum PL efficiency of 14.28 and 62%, respectively. Experimental and calculation results reveal that the smaller distorted lattice structure of the host could result in the blueshift of the emission from Sb3+. Thus, a tunable color from red to orange was realized. Benefiting from the broadband efficient emission from Sb3+-doped compound 2, an efficient white light-emitting diode with a high color rendering index of up to 92.3 was fabricated to demonstrate its lighting application potential. This work promotes the understanding of the influence of robust Sn(IV)-based host lattice on the PL properties of Sb3+, advancing the development of environmentally friendly, low-cost, and high-efficiency Sn(IV)-based metal halides.

Multi-stimuli-responsive luminescence enabled by crown ether anchored chiral antimony halide phosphors

Stimuli-responsive optical materials have provided a powerful impetus for the development of intelligent optoelectronic devices. The family of organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides, distinguished by their structural diversity, presents a prospective platform for the advancement of stimuli-responsive optical materials. Here, we have employed a crown ether to anchor the A-site cation of a chiral antimony halide, enabling convenient control and modulation of its photophysical properties. The chirality-dependent asymmetric lattice distortion of inorganic skeletons assisted by a crown ether promotes the formation of self-trapped excitons (STEs), leading to a high photoluminescence quantum yield of over 85%, concomitant with the effective circularly polarized luminescence. The antimony halide enantiomers showcase highly sensitive stimuli-responsive luminescent behaviours towards excitation wavelength and temperature simultaneously, exhibiting a versatile reversible colour switching capability from blue to white and further to orange. In situ temperature-dependent luminescence spectra, time-resolved luminescence spectra and theoretical calculations reveal that the multi-stimuli-responsive luminescent behaviours stem from distinct STEs within zero-dimensional lattices. By virtue of the inherent flexibility and adaptability, these chiral antimony chlorides have promising prospects for future applications in cutting-edge fields such as multifunctional illumination technologies and intelligent sensing devices.

Exploring 0D lead-free metal halide with highly efficient blue light emission and high-sensitivity photodetection

Environmentally friendly and highly efficient blue luminescent materials are an unremitting pursuit in the optoelectronic field. Herein, we assembled a new 0D lead-free metal halide of (F-PPA)ZnBr4, which exhibits narrow blue light emission with a remarkable PLQY of 50.15%, high stability and high detection sensitivity toward UV light. These results indicate the potential for the application of low-dimensional zinc-based halides in multiple optoelectronic devices.

Zero-Dimensional Tellurium-Based Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Halide Single Crystal with Yellow-Orange Emission from Self-Trapped Excitons

Organic-inorganic hybrid halides and their analogs that exhibit efficient broadband emission from self-trapped excitons (STEs) offers an unique pathway towards realization of highly efficient white light sources for lighting applications. An appropriate dilution of ns2 ions into a halide host is essential to produce auxiliary emissions. However, the realization of ns2 cation-based halides phosphor that can be excited by blue light-emitting diode (LED) is still rarely reported. In this study, a zero-dimensional Te-based single crystal (C8H20N)2TeCl6 was synthesized, which exhibits a yellow-orange emission centered at 600 nm with a full width at half maximum of 130 nm upon excitation under 437 nm. Intense electron-phonon coupling was confirmed in the (C8H20N)2TeCl6 single crystal and the light emitting mechanism is comprehensively discussed. The results of this study are pertinent to the emissive mechanism of Te-based hybrid halides and can facilitate discovery of unidentified metal halides with broadband excitation features.

0D Pyramid-intercalated 2D Bimetallic Halides with Tunable Electronic Structures and Enhanced Emission under Pressure

Hybrid metal halides are emerging semiconductors as promising candidates for optoelectronics. The pursuit of hybridizing various dimensions of metal halides remains a desirable yet highly complex endeavor. By utilizing dimension engineering, a diverse array of new materials with intrinsically different electronic and optical properties has been developed. Here, we report a new family of 2D-0D hybrid bimetallic halides, (C6 N2 H14 )2 SbCdCl9  ⋅ 2H2 O (SbCd) and (C6 N2 H14 )2 SbCuCl9  ⋅ 2H2 O (SbCu). These compounds adopt a new layered structure, consisting of alternating 0D square pyramidal [SbCl5 ] and 2D inorganic layers sandwiched by organic layers. SbCd and SbCu have optical band gaps of 3.3 and 2.3 eV, respectively. These compounds exhibit weak photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature, and the PL gradually enhances with decreasing temperature. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that SbCd and SbCu are direct gap semiconductors, where first-principles band gaps follow the experimental trend. Moreover, given the different pressure responses of 0D and 2D components, these materials exhibit highly tunable electronic structures during compression, where a remarkable 11 times enhancement in PL emission is observed for SbCd at 19 GPa. This work opens new avenues for designing new layered bimetallic halides and further manipulating their structures and optoelectronic properties via pressure.

Copper and silver heterometallic iodoantimonates: structure, thermal stability, and optical properties

Seven heterometallic iodoantimonates with the general formula (Cat)2{[Sb2M2I10]} (M = Cu(I) (1-6), Ag(I) (7)) were prepared. X-ray diffraction data indicate that these compounds are the first Sb(III) representatives of the structural type previously known only for heterometallic iodobismuthates(III). In 3 and 4, halogen-substituted cations form halogen bonds with the heterometallic halometalate chain. 1-7 show prominent thermal stability. The estimated optical band gaps lie between 2.16 and 2.40 eV. As in heterometallic iodobismuthates, incorporation of Cu+ rather than Ag+ provides a much lower band gap.

Zero-Dimensional Hybrid Antimony Chloride with Near-Unity Broad-Band Orange-Red Emission toward Solid-State Lighting

Zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid metal halides are attractive owing to their distinctive structure as well as photoluminescence (PL) characteristics. To discover 0D hybrid metal halides with high photoluminescence quantum yield and good stability is of great significance for white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Herein, a novel hybrid antimony chloride (CTP)2SbCl5 is synthesized, which shows a bright broad-band orange-red emission peaking at 620 nm under the low energy excitation (365 nm), achieving an excellent photoluminescence quantum yield of 96.8%. In addition, (CTP)2SbCl5 shows an additional emission peaking at 470 nm when excited at high energy (323 nm). PL spectra and density functional theory results demonstrate that the observed dual-band emission originates from the singlet and triplet self-trapped excitons confined in isolated [SbCl5]2- square pyramids. Moreover, (CTP)2SbCl5 presents relatively superior air stability, and the PL intensity still maintains 78% of the initial PL intensity when exposed to the air for above 2 weeks. Benefiting from high-efficiency PL emission and good stability of (CTP)2SbCl5, a stable warm white LED device with a 92.3% color rendering index was prepared by coating blue phosphor BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+, green (Sr,Ba)2SiO4:Eu2+, and orange-red (CTP)2SbCl5 on a 365 nm LED chip. This work provides an efficient luminescent material and also demonstrates the potential application of 0D hybrid antimony chloride in solid-state lighting.

Pseudo-2D Layered Organic-Inorganic Manganese Bromide with a Near-Unity Photoluminescence Quantum Yield for White Light-Emitting Diode and X-Ray Scintillator

Eco-friendly lead-free organic-inorganic manganese halides (OIMHs) have attracted considerable attention in various optoelectronic applications because of their superior optical properties and flexible solution processibility. Herein, we report a novel pseudo-2D layered OIMH (MTP)2 MnBr4 (MTP: methyltriphenylphosphonium), which exhibits intense green emission under UV/blue or X-ray excitation, with a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield, high resistance to thermal quenching (I150 °C =84.1 %) and good photochemical stability. These features enable (MTP)2 MnBr4 as an efficient green phosphor for blue-converted white light-emitting diodes, demonstrating a commercial-level luminous efficiency of 101 lm W-1 and a wide color gamut of 116 % NTSC. Moreover, these (MTP)2 MnBr4 crystals showcase outstanding X-ray scintillation properties, delivering a light yield of 67000 photon MeV-1 , a detection limit of 82.4 nGy s-1 , and a competitive spatial resolution of 6.2 lp mm-1 for X-ray imaging. This work presents a new avenue for the exploration of eco-friendly luminescent OIMHs towards multifunctional light-emitting applications.

Luminescent Behavior of Sb3+-Activated Luminescent Metal Halide

Metal halide perovskites have unparalleled optoelectronic properties and broad application potential and are expected to become the next epoch-making optoelectronic semiconductors. Although remarkable achievements have been achieved with lead halide perovskites, the toxicity of lead inhibits the development of such materials. Recently, Sb3+-activated luminescent metal halide perovskite materials with low toxicity, high efficiency, broadband, large Stokes shift, and emission wavelengths covering the entire visible and near-infrared regions have been considered one of the most likely luminescent materials to replace lead halide perovskites. This review reviews the synthesis, luminescence mechanism, structure, and luminescence properties of the compounds. The basic luminescence properties of Sb3+-activated luminescent metal halide perovskites and their applications in WLED, electroluminescence LED, temperature sensing, optical anti-counterfeiting, and X-ray scintillators are introduced. Finally, the development prospects and challenges of Sb3+-activated luminescent metal halide perovskites are discussed.

Second-Harmonic Generation in Homochiral Antimony Halides Directed by l-Histidine

Three homochiral organic-inorganic hybrid antimony halides, namely, (L-Hhis)2Sb2Cl8 (1), L-H2his·SbBr5·H2O (2), and (L-H2his)2·Sb3I13·4H2O (3), were prepared to investigate the structure-directing roles of l-histidine (l-his). These compounds feature dimeric, chainlike, and trimeric structures with different optical bandgaps. They display second-harmonic-generation (SHG) responses of 0.1, 2.6, and 0.05 times that of KH2PO4, respectively. Theoretical calculations for compound 2 were carried out to get insights into its structure-property relationship.

Ultralow-loss Optical Waveguides through Balancing Deep-Blue TADF and Orange Room Temperature Phosphorescence in Hybrid Antimony Halide Microstructures

Harnessing the potential of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is crucial for developing light-emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers, sensors, and many others. However, effective strategies in this domain are still relatively scarce. This study presents a new approach to achieving highly efficient deep-blue TADF (with a PLQY of 25 %) and low-energy orange RTP (with a PLQY of 90 %) through the fabrication of lead-free hybrid halides. This new class of monomeric and dimeric 0D antimony halides can be facilely synthesized using a bottom-up solution process, requiring only a few seconds to minutes, which offer exceptional stability and nontoxicity. By leveraging the highly adaptable molecular arrangement and crystal packing modes, the hybrid antimony halides demonstrate the ability to self-assemble into regular 1D microrod and 2D microplate morphologies. This self-assembly is facilitated by multiple non-covalent interactions between the inorganic cores and organic shells. Notably, these microstructures exhibit outstanding polarized luminescence and function as low-dimensional optical waveguides with remarkably low optical-loss coefficients. Therefore, this work not only presents a pioneering demonstration of deep-blue TADF in hybrid antimony halides, but also introduces 1D and 2D micro/nanostructures that hold promising potential for applications in white LEDs and low-dimensional photonic systems.

Crystal-glass phase transition enabling reversible fluorescence switching in zero-dimensional antimony halides

Crystal-glass phase transition in luminescent metal halides provides unique opportunities to tune the photoluminescence. Here we report four zero-dimensional Sb-based halide glasses featuring reversible phase transition upon heating and acetone triggering conditions, along with modulated luminescence properties. Benefiting from the fluorescence switching, information encryption and anti-counterfeiting applications are achieved.

Dual Monomeric Inorganic Units Constructed Bright Emissive Zero-Dimensional Antimony Chlorides with Solvent-Induced Reversible Structural Transition

A5M2X11 and A3M2X9 families (A = monovalent organic cation; M = trivalent metal; X = halogen) are receiving increasing attention because of their combination of easy solution processability and superior ferroelectricity properties. However, synthesizing highly efficient A5M2X11 and A3M2X9-type fluorophores with multiple monomeric inorganic units and achieving their structural interconversion remains challenging. Here, we report two novel zero-dimensional (0D) antimony halides, (C10H16N)5Sb2Cl11·C2H3N (1) and (C10H16N)3Sb2Cl9 (2), which not only contain two distinct [SbXn]3-n units but also have excellent orange (590 nm) and yellow-green emission (540 nm) with high PLQY of 17.7% and 31.5%, respectively. Interestingly, a reversible structural conversion could be triggered by acetonitrile steam stimulation, accompanied by luminescence switching properties. This work not only enriches the structure of hybrid Sb-based halides but also provides the possibility of well-known A5M2X11 and A3M2X9 families as structural transformation materials.

One-Dimensional Organic-Inorganic Lead Bromide Hybrids with Excitation-Dependent White-Light Emission Templated by Pyridinium Derivatives

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides have attracted widespread attention due to their excellent tunability and versatility. Here, we have selected pyridinium derivatives with different substituent groups or substitution positions as the organic templating cations and obtained six 1D chain-like structures. They are divided into three types: type I (single chain), type II (double chain), and type III (triple chain), with tunable optical band gaps and emission properties. Among them, only (2,4-LD)PbBr₃ (2,4-LD = 2,4-lutidine) shows an exciton-dependent emission phenomenon, ranging from strong yellow-white to weak red-white light. By comparing its photoluminescence spectrum with that of its bromate (2,4-LD)Br, it is found that the strong yellow-white emission at 534 nm mainly came from the organic component. Furthermore, through a comparison of the fluorescence spectra and lifetimes of (2,4-LD)PbBr₃ and (2-MP)PbBr₃ (2-MP = 2-methylpyridine) with similar structures at different temperatures, we confirm that the tunable emission of (2,4-LD)PbBr₃ comes from different photoluminescent sources corresponding to organic cations and self-trapped excitons. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that (2,4-LD)PbBr₃ has a stronger interaction between organic and inorganic components compared to (2-MP)PbBr₃. This work highlights the importance of organic templating cations in hybrid metal halides and the new functionalities associated with them.
