Stereoselective Synthesis of β, γ-Fused Bicyclic γ-Ureasultams via an Intramolecular Mannich and aza-Michael Addition Cascade

A novel approach has been developed for the synthesis of bicyclic β, γ-fused bicyclic γ-ureasultams containing two consecutive chiral centers through an intramolecular Mannich and aza-Michael addition cascade of alkenyl sulfamides. The straightforward practical procedure and readily available starting materials enable the synthesis of variously substituted ureasultams. In addition, bicyclic γ-ureasultams is a class of potential biotin analogues.

Pseudo-2D Layered Organic-Inorganic Manganese Bromide with a Near-Unity Photoluminescence Quantum Yield for White Light-Emitting Diode and X-Ray Scintillator

Eco-friendly lead-free organic-inorganic manganese halides (OIMHs) have attracted considerable attention in various optoelectronic applications because of their superior optical properties and flexible solution processibility. Herein, we report a novel pseudo-2D layered OIMH (MTP)2 MnBr4 (MTP: methyltriphenylphosphonium), which exhibits intense green emission under UV/blue or X-ray excitation, with a near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield, high resistance to thermal quenching (I150 °C =84.1 %) and good photochemical stability. These features enable (MTP)2 MnBr4 as an efficient green phosphor for blue-converted white light-emitting diodes, demonstrating a commercial-level luminous efficiency of 101 lm W-1 and a wide color gamut of 116 % NTSC. Moreover, these (MTP)2 MnBr4 crystals showcase outstanding X-ray scintillation properties, delivering a light yield of 67000 photon MeV-1 , a detection limit of 82.4 nGy s-1 , and a competitive spatial resolution of 6.2 lp mm-1 for X-ray imaging. This work presents a new avenue for the exploration of eco-friendly luminescent OIMHs towards multifunctional light-emitting applications.

The overlooked contribution of trees outside forests to tree cover and woody biomass across Europe

Trees are an integral part in European landscapes, but only forest resources are systematically assessed by national inventories. The contribution of urban and agricultural trees to national-level carbon stocks remains largely unknown. Here we produced canopy cover, height and above-ground biomass maps from 3-meter resolution nanosatellite imagery across Europe. Our biomass estimates have a systematic bias of 7.6% (overestimation; R = 0.98) compared to national inventories of 30 countries, and our dataset is sufficiently highly resolved spatially to support the inclusion of tree biomass outside forests, which we quantify to 0.8 petagrams. Although this represents only 2% of the total tree biomass, large variations between countries are found (10% for UK) and trees in urban areas contribute substantially to national carbon stocks (8% for the Netherlands). The agreement with national inventory data, the scalability, and spatial details across landscapes, including trees outside forests, make our approach attractive for operational implementation to support national carbon stock inventory schemes.

Evaluating the impact of test-trace-isolate for COVID-19 management and alternative strategies

There are many contrasting results concerning the effectiveness of Test-Trace-Isolate (TTI) strategies in mitigating SARS-CoV-2 spread. To shed light on this debate, we developed a novel static-temporal multiplex network characterizing both the regular (static) and random (temporal) contact patterns of individuals and a SARS-CoV-2 transmission model calibrated with historical COVID-19 epidemiological data. We estimated that the TTI strategy alone could not control the disease spread: assuming R0 = 2.5, the infection attack rate would be reduced by 24.5%. Increased test capacity and improved contact trace efficiency only slightly improved the effectiveness of the TTI. We thus investigated the effectiveness of the TTI strategy when coupled with reactive social distancing policies. Limiting contacts on the temporal contact layer would be insufficient to control an epidemic and contacts on both layers would need to be limited simultaneously. For example, the infection attack rate would be reduced by 68.1% when the reactive distancing policy disconnects 30% and 50% of contacts on static and temporal layers, respectively. Our findings highlight that, to reduce the overall transmission, it is important to limit contacts regardless of their types in addition to identifying infected individuals through contact tracing, given the substantial proportion of asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 transmission.

Constructing brain functional network by Adversarial Temporal-Spatial Aligned Transformer for early AD analysis

Introduction

The brain functional network can describe the spontaneous activity of nerve cells and reveal the subtle abnormal changes associated with brain disease. It has been widely used for analyzing early Alzheimer's disease (AD) and exploring pathological mechanisms. However, the current methods of constructing functional connectivity networks from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) heavily depend on the software toolboxes, which may lead to errors in connection strength estimation and bad performance in disease analysis because of many subjective settings.

Methods

To solve this problem, in this paper, a novel Adversarial Temporal-Spatial Aligned Transformer (ATAT) model is proposed to automatically map 4D fMRI into functional connectivity network for early AD analysis. By incorporating the volume and location of anatomical brain regions, the region-guided feature learning network can roughly focus on local features for each brain region. Also, the spatial-temporal aligned transformer network is developed to adaptively adjust boundary features of adjacent regions and capture global functional connectivity patterns of distant regions. Furthermore, a multi-channel temporal discriminator is devised to distinguish the joint distributions of the multi-region time series from the generator and the real sample.

Results

Experimental results on the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) proved the effectiveness and superior performance of the proposed model in early AD prediction and progression analysis.

Discussion

To verify the reliability of the proposed model, the detected important ROIs are compared with clinical studies and show partial consistency. Furthermore, the most significant altered connectivity reflects the main characteristics associated with AD.

Conclusion

Generally, the proposed ATAT provides a new perspective in constructing functional connectivity networks and is able to evaluate the disease-related changing characteristics at different stages for neuroscience exploration and clinical disease analysis.

Quantitative Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy for Field Detections Based on Structurally Homogeneous Silver-Coated Silicon Nanocone Arrays

Practical application of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is greatly limited by the inaccurate quantitative analyses due to the measuring parameter's fluctuations induced by different operators, different Raman spectrometers, and different test sites and moments, especially during the field tests. Herein, we develop a strategy of quantitative SERS for field detection via designing structurally homogeneous and ordered Ag-coated Si nanocone arrays. Such an array is fabricated as SERS chips by depositing Ag on the template etching-induced Si nanocone array. Taking 4-aminothiophenol as the typical analyte, the influences of fluctuations in measuring parameters (such as defocusing depth and laser powers) on Raman signals are systematically studied, which significantly change SERS measurements. It has been shown that the silicon underneath the Ag coating in the chip can respond to the measuring parameters' fluctuations synchronously with and similar to the analyte adsorbed on the chip surface, and the normalization with Si Raman signals can well eliminate the big fluctuations (up to 1 or 2 orders of magnitude) in measurements, achieving highly reproducible measurements (mostly, <5% in signal fluctuations) and accurate quantitative SERS analyses. Finally, the simulated field tests demonstrate that the developed strategy enables quantitatively analyzing the highly scattered SERS measurements well with 1 order of magnitude in signal fluctuation, exhibiting good practicability. This study provides a new practical chip and reliable quantitative SERS for the field detection of real samples.

UV-O3 treated annealing-free cerium oxide as electron transport layers in flexible planar perovskite solar cells

Fabricating electron transport layers at low temperatures is challenging but highly desired in the field of flexible perovskite solar cells (f-PSCs). In this study, highly uniform cerium oxide (CeO _x ) films prepared by the UV-O₃ treatment have been successfully applied as the electron transport layer (ETL) in methylammonium lead halide (CH₃NH₃PbI₃) perovskite-based f-PSCs. Under AM 1.5 G sunlight with 100 mW cm^-2, these cells exhibited an open-circuit voltage (V _oc) of 0.98 V, a short-circuit current density (J _sc) of 19.42 mA cm^-2, a fill factor (FF) of 0.72 and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.63%. The PCE was much higher than that of the control planar CeO _x ETL (PCE ∼ 9.08%) prepared at a low temperature (80 °C) without the UV-O₃ treatment, and this was ascribed to the improved CeO _x film, enhanced light absorption and suppressed charge recombination. The cells that bend at 15 mm of radius showed excellent stability with less than 10% reduction in PCE after 500 cycles of repeated bending at ambient temperature. The charge-transmission kinetic parameters and long-term stability of the CeO _x -based f-PSCs were analyzed as well.

A chromosome-scale reference genome of Aquilegia oxysepala var. kansuensis

The genus Aquilegia (Ranunculaceae) has been cultivated as ornamental and medicinal plants for centuries. With petal spurs of strikingly diverse size and shape, Aquilegia has also been recognized as an excellent system for evolutionary studies. Pollinator-mediated selection for longer spurs is believed to have shaped the evolution of this genus, especially the North American taxa. Recently, however, an opposite evolutionary trend was reported in an Asian lineage, where multiple origins of mini- or even nonspurred morphs have occurred. Interesting as it is, the lack of genomic resources has limited our ability to decipher the molecular and evolutionary mechanisms underlying spur reduction in this special lineage. Using long-read sequencing (PacBio Sequel), in combination with optical maps (BioNano DLS) and Hi-C, we assembled a high-quality reference genome of A. oxysepala var. kansuensis, a sister species to the nonspurred taxon. The final assembly is approximately 293.2 Mb, 94.6% (277.4 Mb) of which has been anchored to 7 pseudochromosomes. A total of 25,571 protein-coding genes were predicted, with 97.2% being functionally annotated. When comparing this genome with that of A. coerulea, we detected a large rearrangement between Chr1 and Chr4, which might have caused the Chr4 of A. oxysepala var. kansuensis to partly deviate from the "decaying" path that was taken before the split of Aquilegia and Semiaquilegia. This high-quality reference genome is fundamental to further investigations on the development and evolution of petal spurs and provides a strong foundation for the breeding of new horticultural Aquilegia cultivars.

Ambiguity Processing Bias Induced by Depressed Mood Is Associated with Diminished Pleasantness

Depressed individuals are biased to perceive, interpret, and judge ambiguous cues in a negative/pessimistic manner. Depressed mood can induce and exacerbate these biases, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. We theorize that depressed mood can bias ambiguity processing by altering one's subjective emotional feelings (e.g. pleasantness/unpleasantness) of the cues. This is because when there is limited objective information, individuals often rely on subjective feelings as a source of information for cognitive processing. To test this theory, three groups (induced depression vs. spontaneous depression vs. neutral) were tested in the Judgement Bias Task (JBT), a behavioral assay of ambiguity processing bias. Subjective pleasantness/unpleasantness of cues was measured by facial electromyography (EMG) from the zygomaticus major (ZM, "smiling") and from the corrugator supercilii (CS, "frowning") muscles. As predicted, induced sad mood (vs. neutral mood) yielded a negative bias with a magnitude comparable to that in a spontaneous depressed mood. The facial EMG data indicates that the negative judgement bias induced by depressed mood was associated with a decrease in ZM reactivity (i.e., diminished perceived pleasantness of cues). Our results suggest that depressed mood may bias ambiguity processing by affecting the reward system.

High Performance of PEDOT:PSS/n-Si Solar Cells Based on Textured Surface with AgNWs Electrodes

Hybrid heterojunction solar cells (HHSCs) have gained extensive research and attention due to simple device structure and low-cost technological processes. Here, HHSCs are presented based on a highly transparent conductive polymer poly(3,4ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS) directly spin-coated on an n-type crystalline silicon with microscale surface textures, which are prepared by traditional chemical etching. We have studied interface properties between PEDOT:PSS and textured n-Si by varying coating conditions. Final power conversion efficiency (PCE) could arrive at 8.54% by these simple solution-based fabrication processes. The high conversion efficiency is attributed to the fully conformal contact between PEDOT:PSS film and textured silicon. Furthermore, the reflectance of the PEDOT:PSS layer on textured surface is analyzed by changing film thickness. In order to improve the performance of the device, silver nanowires were employed as electrodes because of its better optical transmittance and electrical conductivity. The highest PCE of 11.07% was achieved which displayed a 29.6% enhancement compared with traditional silver electrodes. These findings imply that the combination of PEDOT:PSS film and silver nanowire transparent electrodes pave a promising way for realizing high-efficiency and low-cost solar cells.
