Ion Co-storage in Porous Organic Frameworks through On-site Coulomb Interactions for High Energy and Power Density Batteries

Ferrocene-Based Polymer Organic Cathode for Extreme Fast Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries with Ultralong Lifespans

To meet the growing demand for energy storage, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with fast charging capabilities has emerged as a critical technology. The electrode materials affect the rate performance significantly. Organic electrodes with structural flexibility support fast lithium-ion transport and are considered promising candidates for fast-charging LIBs. However, it is a challenge to create organic electrodes that can cycle steadily and reach high energy density in a few minutes. To solve this issue, accelerating the transport of electrons and lithium ions in the electrode is the key. Here, it is demonstrated that a ferrocene-based polymer electrode (Fc-SO3Li) can be used as a fast-charging organic electrode for LIBs. Thanks to its molecular architecture, LIBs with Fc-SO3Li show exceptional cycling stability (99.99% capacity retention after 10 000 cycles) and reach an energy density of 183 Wh kg-1 in 72 seconds. Moreover, the composite material through in situ polymerization with Fc-SO3Li and 50 wt % carbon nanotube (denoted as Fc-SO3Li-CNT50) achieved optimized electron and ion transport pathways. After 10 000 cycles at a high current density of 50C, it delivered a high energy density of 304 Wh kg-1. This study provides valuable insights into designing cathode materials for LIBs that combine high power and ultralong cycle life.

Non-Metal Ion Storage in Zinc-Organic Batteries

Zinc-organic batteries (ZOBs) are receiving widespread attention as up-and-coming energy-storage systems due to their sustainability, operational safety and low cost. Charge carrier is one of the critical factors affecting the redox kinetics and electrochemical performances of ZOBs. Compared with conventional large-sized and sluggish Zn2+ storage, non-metallic charge carriers with small hydrated size and light weight show accelerated interfacial dehydration and fast reaction kinetics, enabling superior electrochemical metrics for ZOBs. Thus, it is valuable and ongoing works to build better ZOBs with non-metallic ion storage. In this review, versatile non-metallic cationic (H+, NH4 +) and anionic (Cl-, OH-, CF3SO3 -, SO4 2-) charge carriers of ZOBs are first categorized with a brief comparison of their respective physicochemical properties and chemical interactions with redox-active organic materials. Furthermore, this work highlights the implementation effectiveness of non-metallic ions in ZOBs, giving insights into the impact of ion types on the metrics (capacity, rate capability, operation voltage, and cycle life) of organic cathodes. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of non-metal-ion-based ZOBs are outlined to guild the future development of next-generation energy communities.

Engineering a High-Strength and Superior-Electrolyte-Wettability Silk Fibroin-Based Gel Interface Achieving Dendrite-Free Zn Anode

Zn metal anode is confronted with notorious Zn dendrite growth caused by inhomogeneous Zn2+ deposition, rampant dendrite growth, and serious interface side reactions, which significantly hinder their large-scale implication. Interface modification engineering is a powerful strategy to improve the Zn metal anode by regulating Zn2+ deposition behavior, suppressing dendrite formation, and protecting the anode from electrolyte corrosion. Herein, we have designed a high-strength and superior-electrolyte-wettability composite gel protective layer based on silk fibroin (SF) and ionic liquids (ILs) on the Zn anode surface by a straightforward spin-coating strategy. The Zn ion transport kinetics and mechanical properties were further improved by following the incubation process to construct a more well-ordered β-sheet structure. Consequently, the incubated composite gel coating serves as a command station, guiding the Zn ion's preferential growth along the (002) plane, resulting in a smooth and uniform deposition morphology. Driven by these improvements, the zinc anode modified with this composite gel exhibits a remarkably long-term cycling lifespan up to 2200 h at 2 mA cm-2, while also displaying superior rate capability. This study represents a landmark achievement in the realm of electrochemical science, delineating a clear pathway toward the realization of a highly reversible and enduring Zn anode.

Multielectron Redox-Bipolar Tetranitroporphyrin Macrocycle Cathode for High-Performance Zinc-Organic Batteries

Bipolar organics fuse the merits of n/p-type redox reactions for better Zn-organic batteries (ZOBs), but face the capacity plafond due to low density of active units and single-electron reactions. Here we report multielectron redox-bipolar tetranitroporphyrin (TNP) with quadruple two-electron-accepting n-type nitro motifs and dual-electron-donating p-type amine moieties towards high-capacity-voltage ZOBs. TNP cathode initiates high-kinetics, hybrid anion-cation 10e- charge storage involving four nitro sites coordinating with Zn2+ ions at low potential and two amine species coupling with SO4 2- ions at high potential. Consequently, Zn||TNP battery harvests high capacity (338 mAh g-1), boosted average voltage (1.08 V), and outstanding energy density (365 Wh kg-1 TNP). Moreover, the extended π-conjugated TNP macrocycle achieves anti-dissolution in electrolytes, prolonging the battery life to 50,000 cycles at 10 A g-1 with 71.6 % capacity retention. This work expands the chemical landscape of multielectron redox-bipolar organics for state-of-the-art ZOBs.

Organic electrodes based on redox-active covalent organic frameworks for lithium batteries

Electroactive organic materials have received much attention as alternative electrodes for metal-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacity, resource availability, and environmental friendliness. In particular, redox-active covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently emerged as promising electrodes due to their tunable electrochemical properties, insolubility in electrolytes, and structural versatility. In this Highlight, we review some recent strategies to improve the energy density and power density of COF electrodes for lithium batteries from the perspective of molecular design and electrode optimisation. Some other aspects such as stability and scalability are also discussed. Finally, the main challenges to improve their performance and future prospects for COF-based organic batteries are highlighted.

NH4 + Charge Carrier Coordinated H-Bonded Organic Small Molecule for Fast and Superstable Rechargeable Zinc Batteries

Organic small molecules as high-capacity cathodes for Zn-organic batteries have inspired numerous interests, but are trapped by their easy-dissolution in electrolytes. Here we knit ultrastable lock-and-key hydrogen-bonding networks between 2, 7-dinitropyrene-4, 5, 9, 10-tetraone (DNPT) and NH4 + charge carrier. DNPT with octuple-active carbonyl/nitro centers (H-bond acceptor) are redox-exclusively accessible for flexible tetrahedral NH4 + ions (H-bond donator) but exclude larger and rigid Zn2+ , due to a lower activation energy (0.14 vs. 0.31 eV). NH4 + coordinated H-bonding chemistry conquers the stability barrier of DNPT in electrolyte, and gives fast diffusion kinetics of non-metallic charge carrier. A stable two-step 4e- NH4 + coordination with DNPT cathode harvests a high capacity (320 mAh g-1 ), a high-rate capability (50 A g-1 ) and an ultralong life (60,000 cycles). This finding points to a new paradigm for H-bond stabilized organic small molecules to design advanced zinc batteries.

Rhodium-Catalyzed Enantioselective 1,4-Oxyamination of Conjugated gem-Difluorodienes via Coupling with Carboxylic Acids and Dioxazolones

The incorporation of fluorine atoms in organics improves their bioactivity and lipophilicity. Catalytic functionalization of gem-difluorodienes represents one of the most straightforward approaches to access fluorinated alkenes. In contrast to the regular 1,3-dienes that undergo diverse asymmetric di/hydrofunctionalizations, the regio- and enantioselective oxyamination of gem-difluorodienes remains untouched. Herein, we report asymmetric 1,4-oxyamination of gem-difluorodiene by chiral rhodium-catalyzed three-component coupling with readily available carboxylic acid and dioxazolone, affording gem-difluorinated 1,4-amino alcohol derivatives. Our asymmetric protocol exhibits high 1,4-regio- and enantioselectivity with utility in the late-stage modification of pharmaceuticals and natural products. Stoichiometric experiments provide evidences for the π-allylrhodium pathway. Related oxyamination was also realized when trifluoroethanol was used as an oxygen nucleophile.
