Discovery of Two-dimensional Hexagonal MBene HfBO and Exploration on its Potential for Lithium-Ion Storage

Two-Dimensional Transition Metal Phosphides As Cathode Additive in Robust Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The development of advanced cathode materials able to promote the sluggish redox kinetics of polysulfides is crucial to bringing lithium-sulfur batteries to the market. Herein, two electrode materials: namely, Zr2PS2 and Zr2PTe2, are identified through screening several hundred thousand compositions in the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database. First-principles calculations are performed on these two materials. These structures are similar to that of the classical MXenes. Concurrently, calculations show that Zr2PS2 and Zr2PTe2 possess high electrical conductivity, promote Li ion diffusion, and have excellent electrocatalytic activity for the Li-S reaction and particularly for the Li2S decomposition. Besides, the mechanisms behind the excellent predicted performance of Zr2PS2 and Zr2PTe2 are elucidated through electron localization function, charge density difference, and localized orbital locator. This work not only identifies two candidate sulfur cathode additives but may also serve as a reference for the identification of additional electrode materials in new generations of batteries, particularly in sulfur cathodes.

Multilayer Fluorine-Free MoBTx MBene with Hydrophilic Structural-Modulating for the Fabrication of a Low-Resistance and High-Resolution Humidity Sensor

2D transition metal borides (MBenes) with abundant surface terminals hold great promise in molecular sensing applications. However, MBenes from etching with fluorine-containing reagents present inert -fluorine groups on the surface, which hinders their sensing capability. Herein, the multilayer fluorine-free MoBTx MBene (where Tx represents O, OH, and Cl) with hydrophilic structure is prepared by a hydrothermal-assisted hydrochloric acid etching strategy based on guidance from the first-principle calculations. Significantly, the fluorine-free MoBTx-based humidity sensor is fabricated and demonstrates low resistance and excellent humidity performance, achieving a response of 90% to 98%RH and a high resolution of 1%RH at room temperature. By combining the experimental results with the first-principles calculations, the interactions between MoBTx and H2O, including the adsorption and intercalation of H2O, are understood first in depth. Finally, the portable humidity early warning system for real-time monitoring and early warning of infant enuresis and back sweating illustrates its potential for humidity sensing applications. This work not only provides guidance for preparation of fluorine-free MBenes, but also contributes to advancing their exploration in sensing applications.

Defect Engineering of Hexagonal MAB Phase Ti2InB2 as Anode of Lithium-Ion Battery with Excellent Cycling Stability

Hexagonal MAB phases （h-MAB） have attracted attention due to their potential to exfoliate into MBenes, similar to MXenes, which are predicted to be promising for Li-ion battery applications. However, the high cost of synthesizing MBenes poses challenges for their use in batteries. This study presents a novel approach where a simple ball-milling treatment is employed to enhance the purity of the h-MAB phase Ti2InB2 and introduce significant indium defects, resulting in improved conductivity and the creation of abundant active sites. The synthesized Ti2InB2 with indium defects (VIn-Ti2InB2) exhibits excellent electrochemical properties, particularly exceptional long-cycle stability at current densities of 5 A g-1 (5000 cycles, average capacity decay of 0.0018%) and 10 A g-1 (15 000 cycles, average capacity decay of 0.093%). The charge storage mechanism of VIn-Ti2InB2, involving a dual redox reaction, is proposed, where defects promote the In-Li alloy reaction and a redox reaction with Li in the TiB layer. Finally, a Li-ion full cell demonstrates cycling stability at 0.5 A g-1 after 350 cycles. This work presents the first accessible and scalable application of VIn-Ti2InB2 as a Li-ion anode, unlocking a wealth of possibilities for sustainable electrochemical applications of h-MAB phases.

Unlocking Enhanced Electrochemical Performance of MBene-MoB Through Controlled Aluminum Dissipation from MoAlB

2D transition metal borides, known as MBenes, have attracted considerable attention due to their exceptional properties. This study explores the feasibility of aluminum (Al) etching from MoAlB using environmentally friendly and sustainable fluoride-free dilute acidic/alkaline solutions at room temperature, revealing its thermodynamic and kinetic viability. Furthermore, it is found that complete removal of Al can be achieved in dilute alkaline reagent under hydrothermal conditions, yielding pristine single/few-layered MBene-MoB for the first time, while acidic solutions result in ≈33% etching rates. XRD refinement, which tracks aluminum removal from 0% to 100%, reveals transient metastable phases of MoAl1-xB (x < 0.5) in the initial etching stages, evolving into relatively stable pure Mo2AlB2 structures with 50% Al deficiency, serving as a precursor to MBenes. The subsequent loss of Al results in a 2D MBene-MoB structure. DFT calculations confirm excellent conductivity for MoAlB, MoAl1-xB (x = 0-1), and MBene-MoB. Remarkably, MBene-MoB exhibits superior supercapacitor performance with a 4025.60 mF cm-2/201.28 F g-1 capacitance. Simulations validate rapid electrolyte diffusion in layered MBene-MoB, contributing significantly to enhanced capacitance. Additionally, in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), MBene-MoB demonstrates superior catalytic activity compared to the precursor MoAlB and commercial MoB. Calculations suggest the potential for enhancing HER through surface modulation, considering its suboptimal hydrogen adsorption energy.

MBene with Redox-Active Terminal Groups for an Energy-Dense Cascade Aqueous Battery

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal borides (MBenes), new members of the 2D materials family, hold great promise for use in the electrocatalytic and energy storage fields because of their high specific area, high chemical activity, and fast charge carrier mobility. Although various types of MBenes are reported, layered MBenes featuring redox-active terminal groups for high energy output are not yet produced. A facile and energy-efficient method for synthesizing MBenes equipped with redox-active terminal groups for cascade Zn||I2 batteries is presented. Layered MBenes have ordered metal vacancies and ─Br terminal groups, enabling the sequential reactions of I-/I0 and Br-/Br0. The I2-hosting MBene-Br cathode results in a specific energy as high as 485.8 Wh kg-1 at 899.7 W kg-1 and a specific power as high as 6007.7 W kg-1 at 180.2 Wh kg-1, far exceeding the best records for Zn||I2 batteries. The results of this study demonstrate that the challenges of MBene synthesis can be overcome and reveal an efficient path for producing high-performance redox-active electrode materials for energy-dense cascade aqueous batteries.

Heterogeneous-Structured Molybdenum Diboride as a Novel and Promising Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

With the development of electric vehicles, exploiting anode materials with high capacity and fast charging capability is an urgent requirement for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Borophene, with the merits of high capacity, high electronic conductivity and fast diffusion kinetics, holds great potential as anode for LIBs. However, it is difficult to fabricate for the intrinsic electron-deficiency of boron atom. Herein, heterogeneous-structured MoB2 (h-MoB2 ) with amorphous shell and crystalline core, is prepared by solid phase molten salt method. As demonstrated, crystalline core can encapsulate the honeycomb borophene within two adjacent Mo atoms, and amorphous shell can accommodate more lithium ions to strengthen the lithium storage capacity and diffusion kinetics. According to theoretical calculations, the lithium adsorption energy in MoB2 is about -2.7 eV, and the lithium diffusion energy barrier in MoB2 is calculated to be 0.199 eV, guaranteeing the enhanced adsorption capability and fast diffusion kinetic behavior of Li+ ions. As a result, h-MoB2 anode presents high capacity of 798 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 , excellent rate performance of 183 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 and long-term cyclic stability for 1200 cycles. This work may inspire ideas for the fabrication of borophene analogs and two-dimensional metal borides.

h-MBenes: Promising Two-Dimensional Material Family for Room-Temperature Antiferromagnetic and Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Applications

Recently, a new class of two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal transition-metal borides (h-MBenes) was discovered through a combination of ab initio predictions and experimental studies. These h-MBenes are derived from ternary hexagonal MAB (h-MAB) phases and have demonstrated promising potential for practical applications. In this study, we conducted first-principles calculations on 15 h-MBenes and identified four antiferromagnetic metals and 11 electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Notably, the h-MnB material exhibited a remarkable Néel temperature of 340 K and a high magnetic anisotropy energy of 154 μeV/atom. Additionally, the hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energies (ΔGH*) for h-ZrBO, h-MoBO, and h-Nb2BO2 are close to the ideal value of 0 eV, indicating their potential as electrochemical catalysts for HER. Further investigations revealed that the electronic structure, Néel temperature, and HER activity of the studied h-MBenes can be tuned by applying biaxial strains. These findings suggest that h-MBenes have wide-ranging applicability in areas such as antiferromagnetic spintronics, flexible electronic devices, and electrocatalysis, thereby expanding the potential applications of 2D transition-metal borides.

Influence of the Hubbard U Parameter on the Structural, Electronic, Magnetic, and Transport Properties of Cr/Fe/Zr-Based MBenes

Although relatively new, MBenes are gaining prominence due to their outstanding mechanical, electronic, magnetic, and chemical properties, and they are predicted to be good electrodes for catalytic processes as well as robust 2D magnets with high critical temperatures, to mention some of their intriguing attributes. From all their multiple stoichiometries, a theoretical study of their orthorhombic and hexagonal phases in the framework of density-functional theory is performed in this work. The results suggest that their properties are strongly dependent on the initial conditions considered in the theoretical approach and must be treated with caution. However, and independently of these factors, all of them are demonstrated to be energetically stable, show a metallic behavior, and exhibit, in specific cases, large magnetic moments per unit cell, exceeding 6.5 μB in the case of the orthorhombic-type Cr2B2, making them suitable as robust 2D magnets with room critical temperature. These findings represent an important step toward a better understanding of MBenes, opening several windows to future research in energy conversion and storage, sensing, catalysis, biotechnology, or spintronics.
